It’s Deadline Day for Trump’s Tax Returns and Mnuchin Isn’t Budging

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin declined to meet congressional Democrats’ Wednesday deadline to provide President Donald Trump’s tax returns, asking for more time to study the legality of their request.

Trump has refused to release his returns since he ran for president, and the clash over their release became a key front in the battles between his administration and newly-empowered Democrats in the House of Representatives. The simmering political conflict may well end up in the federal courts and spill over into the 2020 election.

“The department respects congressional oversight, and we intend to review your request carefully,” Mnuchin wrote in a letter to Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal of Massachusetts.

Neal last Wednesday sent IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig a letter formally requesting six years of Trump’s personal and business tax returns, as well as other documents associated with them, giving a week to respond. Neal on Wednesday said he received Mnuchin’s letter and “will consult with counsel and determine the appropriate response to the commissioner in the coming days.”

Although he did not take a position on whether the returns should be turned over, Mnuchin pointed out that the Ways and Means Committee, when it was under Republican control, had issued a report saying that such a request would be “an abuse of authority” and “set a dangerous precedent.”

Read More: Will We Ever See Trump’s Tax Returns–And Does It Matter?

“Given the seriousness of these issues, which bear no connection to ordinary tax administration,” Mnuchin wrote, “we have begun consultations with the Department of Justice to ensure that our response is fully consistent with the law and the Constitution.”

Trump almost immediately said he opposed the request, and one of his lawyers, William Consovoy, on Friday asked the Treasury Department and IRS to withhold the returns until the Justice Department issues an opinion on whether the request is legal.

Members of the Trump administration, including acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, and their allies have called the request a political attack and a violation of Trump’s privacy.

Federal law gives the Ways and Means Committee, as well as the Senate Finance Committee and the Joint Committee on Taxation, the power to request the returns of any taxpayer, although some legal scholars believe the request needs a legitimate legislative purpose.

In his request, Neal wrote that his committee wants to ensure that the IRS is following its policy of auditing every sitting president and vice president. Democrats have long wanted the returns to examine, among other things, what financial dealings Trump might have.

Senator Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican and the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee said in a statement that Mnuchin was “right to consult with the Department of Justice before responding more fully. House Democrats’ unprecedented request has serious implications for all Americans and requires serious, careful analysis.”

Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, said in a statement that “There is no excuse for Secretary Mnuchin to not meet Chairman Neal’s deadline.”

“The law is clear and consultation with the Justice Department is not required. It’s a sign of political interference that Secretary Mnuchin said he is handling this request when authority has been delegated to the IRS,” Wyden said.

Mnuchin told lawmakers on Tuesday that the department had been in touch with White House lawyers before Neal made his request but had not personally been fully briefed on those discussions. He said, “It is our intent to follow the law.” Mnuchin has said he is concerned about the precedent the demand could set for violating taxpayer privacy.

“The general public, when they elected President Trump, made the decision without his tax returns being released,” Mnuchin said.

Trump broke with 40 years of presidential campaign tradition by declining to release his personal returns before the 2016 election. He said that he was under audit and didn’t intend to turn anything over until that process had been completed. Under questioning at a House hearing on Tuesday, Rettig said that he was unaware of any prohibition against a taxpayer releasing his or her returns while being audited.

Speaking to reporters before departing for a trip to Texas on Wednesday, the president reiterated that he would not release the returns while under audit and asserted that Americans don’t care in any case.

Opinion: Tucker Carlson isn’t sorry. On Fox News, he doesn’t have to be

Opinion: Tucker Carlson isn’t sorry. On Fox News, he doesn’t have to be

Opinion: Tucker Carlson isn’t sorry. On Fox News, he doesn’t have to be

Author Michael Arceneaux explains why Tucker Carlson’s defiant non-apology for his bigoted remarks—and the support he has received from Fox News and beyond—comes as no surprise.

For days now, Tucker Carlson has been subjected to scrutiny after Media Matters, who touts itself as a watchdog of “conservative misinformation in the U.S. media,” published the audio from the Fox News host past appearances on The Bubba the Love Sponge Show. In those recordings from the Tampa-based radio program, Carlson is heard doing the following: insulting Black people, insulting queer people, using sexist language to discuss child rape, child marriage, and rape shield laws, and employing racist and homophobic language to describe Iraqis. In response, the hashtag #FireTuckerCarlson has taken off—calling on the actual faux news network to can one of its biggest stars.

However, if you expected an apology from Tucker Carlson in order to curb the controversy, you are very unfamiliar with Tucker Carlson.

As you see in the above tweet, Carlson did employ the standard iOS note statement now popular among celebrities and other public figures, but he did not offer any form of contrition. Instead, Carlson decided to trivialize the severity of his disturbing comments, merely branding his behavior as saying “naughty things.” He then went on to promote his show.

And on said show that aired on Monday night, Carlson portrayed himself not as a person remorseful for his prejudiced views, or even as a provocateur who once took things too far, but as someone who should be counted among the persecuted. His persecutors? Naturally, the liberal “mob”—a group probably better described as folks of basic decency. “We will never bow to the mob,” Carlson declared. (There is also an op-ed published on the Fox News website supporting Carlson, which I encourage no one else to read.)

Carlson has plenty of supporters. His fellow Fox News host, Sean Hannity, championed him for delaying his vacation to take on the “mob.” Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker writes that, while she doesn’t approve of Carlson’s comments, she does believe “that neither Carlson nor anyone should instinctively bow to the mob, as he said in a retort to demands that Fox News fire their most popular anchor.” On Tuesday, CNN contributor Mary Katherine Ham argued that Carlson is correct “when he says that if he apologizes, nothing ends.” She went on to add, that “nobody’s interested in his apology.”

But he referred to Iraqis as “semiliterate primitive monkeys.” He cavalierly discussed child marriage. He freely used the word “faggot.”

And now, even more despicable comments have been uncovered.

In 2007, Miss South Carolina Teen USA Caitlin Upton was ridiculed for how she answered a question about why a fifth of Americans couldn’t locate the country on a map. While discussing the incident, Bubba and Carlson spoke of her sexually, contributing to the pile-on of negative comments in the worst way possible. “I gotta be honest, I thought she was kind of appealing,” the future Fox News host said. As the two pondered the age of consent in South Carolina, Carlson said, “She’d probably be a pretty good wife.” Shortly thereafter, Carlson asked, “If you had a wife that dumb, would it be good or bad?”

Carlson has yet to respond to these latest recordings, but his response—if we even get one—is unlikely to be all that different from the previous dismissal.

Carlson should be apologetic, but why would he be? He is being paid millions of dollars to espouse these sorts of views.

Bigotry is the business model and it has long proved profitable for Fox News. Yes, advertisers have reportedly cooled on Carlson, but as he himself has stated, the network stands firmly behind him. So the likelihood of Fox News axing him is highly unlikely. Even if  Carlson were to be replaced, the network would likely install another bigot. After all, isn’t Tucker Carlson Bill O’Reilly’s replacement?

Funny enough, among those unearthed radio clips from The Bubba the Love Sponge Show, Carlson once declared that “everyone’s embarrassed to be a white man.” I’m not sure why that would be the case. When you consider Carlson’s defiance and his apologists in and out of the Fox News Channel, we’re being fed yet another needless reminder of just how great it is to be a white man.

Kylie Jenner insists she isn’t engaged

OHMYGOSSIP — Kylie Jenner has insisted she’s not engaged or married to Travis Scott.
The 21-year-old reality star – who has 12-month-old daughter Stormi with the rapper – has been the subject of engagement rumours recently after it was claimed the ‘Sicko Mode’ rapper proposed to her during the Super Bowl earlier this month, where he joined Maroon 5 on stage.
But Kylie has said the speculation isn’t true, as she insisted she would be sure to tell her fans the minute her relationship status changes.
In an interview with PAPER magazine, the ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ star said she wasn’t married or even engaged to 26-year-old Travis just yet, but if that changes, she added: “I’ll let everybody know.”
Her comments come after her older sister Kendall Jenner also quashed the rumours, saying that if Kylie had gotten engaged, she’d been keeping it a secret from her family.
Kendall said: “If she did, she hasn’t told the family yet. I don’t think that has happened.”
The 23-year-old beauty also spoke about rumours of a second pregnancy for the lip kit mogul, after she previously teased fans that she could be expecting another child with a post on Instagram.
Kylie posted a picture of herself and Travis sharing an embrace on the stairs, and joked: “baby #2?”
And although she later denied being pregnant, Kendall then addressed the rumours and claimed that perhaps her sister was just feeling broody because she is so loved-up with the ‘Goosebumps’ hitmaker.
She said: “She’s not [pregnant].
“I think she was just like, ‘We are like looking good and we’re really into each other and maybe baby #2 is gonna happen.’ They’re practicing.”

Nurse Alice: When Your Help isn’t Wanted with Suicide Prevention

Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels is reportedly sending Pete Davidson to “get help” after the comedian posted a now-deleted suicidal message online, hours before the show aired on NBC recently. And from the sounds of it, Davidson is going along with recommendations.

i really don’t want to be on this earth anymore. i’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last, read the actor’s cryptic Instagram post.

Davidson was confirmed to be fine Saturday by the New York Police Department, which visited NBC Studios to check up on him following the alarming post. He briefly appeared on SNL when he introduced musical guests Miley Cyrus, Mark Ronson, and Sean Ono Lennon.

His friend, rapper Machine Gun Kelly, rushed to New York City to support and be by Davidson’s side. Kelly wasn’t the only one who rushed to Davidson’s side over the weekend, however. A source told Us Weekly on Monday that pop star Ariana Grande, the comic’s ex-fiancée, showed up to NBC Studios, too, but Davidson refused to see her. Sources also say he even changed his phone number after the break up to further distance himself from Grande.

Earlier this month, Davidson stated on Instagram that he’d been bullied for months both before and after his split from Grande in October. He said he’d spoken about his borderline personality disorder and about “being suicidal publicly only in the hopes that it will bring awareness and help kids like myself who don’t want to be on this earth.”

Rejected Help

We can only imagine that Grande was hyper-concerned by Davidson’s concerning tweets, especially since her other ex-boyfriend, rapper Mac Miller, died earlier this year. But what do you do when your help is rejected?

It is possible that you can say all the right things and your friend will still be upset with you. Each person is an individual with unique thoughts and feelings, and being angry and upset is the nature of depression. Sometimes people will lash out at those trying to help them because they are hurting and don’t know where to direct those bad feelings. Whoever is nearby becomes a convenient target and, as a result, they may direct anger toward you and reject your assistance. And something else that you have to consider is: Could you have in any way contributed to their unhappy feelings? If so, this may be another reason why they are not receptive to your offers of help.

If this happens, try not to take it personally. Stay calm and continue to do what you can to love and support your friend in whatever way they will allow. According to board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Nicole Washington, “If you do find yourself on the receiving end of an angry reaction, just give that person space. This is not the time to argue, reason, or explain why you did what you did. Maybe once everyone involved has cooled down, a discussion can be held where you both get to express your views of what happened.”

Washington goes on to say that if this is able to occur, take this time to talk through what is helpful for them and what is not so that you know how to better respond to them in the future during these times.

The priority is that the distressed person gets the help they need, even if it isn’t from you. So don’t get salty and turn a blind eye if this happens; rather, continue to be supportive. These can be awkward, complex, and even challenging situations, but focus on the individual’s safety. If the person is in immediate danger – don’t leave them alone, call 911 and get help. Make sure to be on the lookout for warning signs of suicide and know when to seek help from others, even in cases when your help is rejected.

Listen, That ‘Riverdale’ Zombie Apocalypse Theory Isn’t As Crazy As You Think

SPOILER ALERT: Warning, this article contains major spoilers for the Season 3 premiere of Riverdale. Proceed at your own peril.

We adore Riverdale. It’s a bright pop of Gen Z color in a bleak world full of milkshakes, pearls, and delicious family drama — and the Season 3 premiere, “Labor Day,” packed a whole series of on-brand punches. But it also introduced us to some possible supernatural elements that might mean the peppy town of Riverdale is headed for, well, a zombie apocalypse. It’s a theory that’s been floating around for a while, and based on “Labor Day,” it’s actually looking preeetty likely.

Betty Cooper Riverdale Season 3 premiere Episode 1

The premiere revealed a lot: Betty’s been secretly battling an Adderall addiction, Archie took a plea bargain for a murder he didn’t commit and is headed to juvenile detention for two years, Veronica declared all-out war on her father, Moose and Kevin made a pact to bone by Halloween, Sweet Pea and Josie hooked up all summer (?!?!), Cheryl shot Malachai with an arrow while wearing a bikini top and Serpent jacket, Hot Dog escaped the evil grips of Penny and the Ghoulies, Jughead discovered this season’s mysterious new villain known only as the Gargoyle King, and Polly’s babies floated over a fire like two fleshy hot air balloons.

Based on the last few minutes of the Season 3 premiere alone, it looks like the supernatural has officially arrived in Riverdale. Here’s exactly what that might mean for the rest of this season.

The Gargoyle King Looks Super Supernatural

Gargoyle King Riverdale Fox Forest Season 3 premiere

So far, we only know a few things about the Gargoyle King: He’s somehow a part of Ben and Dilton’s role-playing game, he hangs out in Fox Forest, he’s terrifying, and he’s serving some serious demonic vibes. Last season’s villain, the Black Hood, was a flesh and blood dude (or dudes, still not totally clear on how many Black Hoods there actually are). But the Gargoyle King might be something else — and based on that creepy final scene, it’s entirely possible he’s not even human. That could open up a whole slew of supernatural possibilities for Riverdale.

A Dangerous and Possibly Magical Cult Has Arrived

Riverdale the Farm Juniper Dagwood Cooper Season 3 Premiere

The premiere made a point of mentioning Edgar Evernever, the leader of Polly’s beloved Farm, and he seems like all kinds of bad news. Polly keeps blathering on and on about how Edgar healed her — and now she’s even recruited her own mother to the Farm’s ranks — but no one’s buying that this is some sort of simple yoga-driven nature retreat.

Polly and Alice dropped Juniper and Dagwood over a fire and, they frickin’ floated. Yes, Betty had a seizure right after that happened and chances are Alice and Polly will try to convince her she imagined the whole thing — but she didn’t. Those babies flew, and that is some dark magic, end-of-days nonsense. There have also been rumors that Edgar and his daughter Evelyn will become the Coopers’ neighbors this season, and that she and Betty will form a friendship. Run away, Betty, run far away.

The Zombie Apocalypse Might Be Coming

Riverdale Greendale Afterlife with Archie zombie apocalypse Season 3 premiere

Look, it could legitimately happen. Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s popular Archie comic series, Afterlife With Archie, is all about the Riverdale gang surviving (and sometimes not surviving) the zombie apocalypse. He’s been dropping some serious hints that fans might want to pay attention to that source material — for example, the Season 3 mid-series finale is called “Outbreak.”

Last season Riverdale started to set us up for a transition into the gruesome supernatural Episode 7, “Tales from the Darkside.” Remember that zombie-looking deer on the road to Greendale? Don’t forget Farmer McGinty‘s ominous words: “You never know on the road to Greendale.”

Hot Dog Could Be Patient Zero

Riverdale Hot Dog Jughead Afterlife with Archie Season 3 premiere

In Afterlife With Archie, Hot Dog is the first being to become infected with the zombie virus before it spreads to Jughead, who in turn becomes Jugdead, King of the Zombies (seriously, read this comic series). It’s a heartbreaking theory, but making Hot Dog a key player in the first episode of Season 3 — and emphasizing how much Jughead loves him — might be setting the pup up to play a crucial (and tragic) role this season.

Enter Sabrina Spellman

Riverdale Sabrina Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Afterlife with Archie

As we all know, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina — Aguirre-Sacasa’s magical new Riverdale companion show premiering on Netflix October 26 — is all about Greendale’s favorite teenage witch. The show will inevitably offer the opportunity for the crossover of our dreams. Sabrina’s already a major player in Afterlife, where she technically started the zombie apocalypse by resurrecting Hot Dog.

After using the dreaded Necronomicon to bring her friend Jughead’s dog back from the dead, Sabrina’s aunts banish Sabrina to witch limbo as punishment. Later, she’s transported to a horrifying H.P. Lovecraft-inspired nether realm and becomes the bride of Cthulhu. It’s a lot, and that probably won’t all happen on Riverdale or Chilling Adventures, but it would be pretty badass to see Sabrina swoop in to lend her neighbors across Sweetwater River a magical hand in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

Betty Might Die

Betty Cooper Jughead Jones Riverdale Season 3 premiere

It’s extremely unlikely, and no one could emotionally deal with the permanent loss of Bughead, but Aguirre-Sacasa did tease a major death in “Outbreak” — and the most recent issue of Afterlife with Archie is titled “Betty: R.I.P.,” so it’s not impossible. She technically isn’t dead in the comics (yet), but no one’s safe in a zombie apocalypse. Not even the core four.
