Behind the scenes? Even more out-of-control.

New excerpts of Kushner, Inc., the forthcoming book by investigative journalist Vicky Ward, describe first daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, as clashing with everyone from former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to former top White House strategist Steve Bannon, who reportedly told the first daughter: “Go fuck yourself.”

The couple, reported to be widely disliked by many Trump administration staffers, has been derided for their conflicts of interest and for White House meddling, according to Ward’s book, which will be out March 19.

John Oliver Gives Ivanka Trump a Serious Reality Check: You Got Nothing on ‘Merit’

HBO

On Sunday night, John Oliver dedicated the opening portion of Last Week Tonight to the “series of setbacks” for President Trump this week, from his failure of a summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to the congressional testimony of Trump’s former fixer (and ex-RNC deputy finance chair) Michael Cohen.

“Over the course of the hearing, Cohen described several possible crimes by his former boss, from suborning perjury to campaign-finance violations, and yet, the Republicans primarily used their time to attack Cohen’s credibility,” offered Oliver in a brief recap.

But the HBO host was most riled up by the revelation that President Trump is said to have ordered his former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly to grant Jared Kushner top-secret security clearance—despite the protestations of Kelly and national security officials.

Is Ivanka Trump Planning a Big Fashion Comeback in China?

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Ivanka Trump shut down her eponymous clothing line last July. Six months later, before the last of her heavily reduced stock has been sold, the first daughter is already planning her comeback.

As the AP reported, Chinese officials have approved five trademarks Trump first filed in 2016 and 2017. Given Trump’s self-branding as a lifestyle guru, those trademarks covering wedding dresses, sunglasses, brokerage, charitable fundraising, and art valuation make sense.

The fifth trademark covers childcare centers, which is somewhat eerie considering her father’s family separation policy. (Ivanka called the policy “a low point” for the administration.)

8 Most Controversial Late-Night Moments of 2018: From Sam Bee vs. Ivanka to Bill Maher’s Recession Wish

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

“There’s a question I get asked a lot,” Jimmy Kimmel said at the beginning of a recent monologue. “Now that we have this president, people ask, ‘Is it easy now? It must be easy to write jokes, there’s so much material, the jokes must write themselves.’ And it’s not true. We still write the jokes ourselves. And in fact, in a way, it makes it harder to be funny when nonsense and stupidity is pouring on your head at all times.”

Kimmel’s comments were merely a set-up to explain that his jokes didn’t write themselves “until today, when Kanye West visited the White House.” But aside from those rare instances, his sentiment echoes what several late-night hosts have expressed during the first two years of the Trump presidency.

And especially in 2018, it seemed, the late-night men and still-too-few women frequently struggled to find the best ways to joke about this president and the madness that surrounds him. The daily onslaught of crazy from the White House, combined with a viewing public increasingly eager to call out any perceived transgression on social media, led to an unprecedented level of outrage, often of the “faux” variety.

Jimmy Kimmel: Trump Wants Jared Kushner as Chief of Staff Because He’s ‘Good Enough to Screw’ Ivanka

ABC

Earlier this week, Jimmy Kimmel noted in his monologue that, given John Kelly’s clashes with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, whoever Donald Trump ends up picking to be his next chief of staff will need the approval of his daughter and son-in-law. Now, it seems that Kushner himself might be up for the job.

According to The Huffington Post, Kushner “has been pushing his own candidacy with Trump, citing his work on a criminal justice reform package and a claimed ability to work with Democrats.”

Or as Kimmel put it, “I guess the thinking is, if he’s good enough to screw my daughter, he’s good enough to screw the country,” to groans from his audience. “I really hope he hires Jared and then he fires Jared so we go through the whole thing,” he added.
