Your HelloGiggles horoscope, January 13th to January 19th: Be patient—the year has only just begun

Your HelloGiggles horoscope, January 13th to January 19th: Be patient—the year has only just begun

Your HelloGiggles horoscope, January 13th to January 19th: Be patient—the year has only just begun

We’re in the last week of steady, reliable Capricorn before we zoom off into the territory of those forward-thinking madcap scientists, otherwise known as Aquarius. So use this week to keep working towards your goals. The key is consistency. No matter what the weather’s like outside, the mountain goat keeps climbing that mountain.

Jupiter square Neptune on the 13th forces us to get real about our dreams, which might mean creating a daily discipline to make the most out of our artistic visions. Sticking with a routine will help you to maximize results with minimum time. Remember: even incremental actions can add up to awesome breakthroughs. Writing a paragraph, taking a 30-minute YouTube dance class, reciting lines on the subway—these are all small things that can ultimately lead you where you want to go. No matter what social media might have us believe, there are no shortcuts when it comes to making dreams come true. It takes practice, steadfastness, and 10,000 hours. Focus on what you want and keep at it. Jupiter square Neptune will also shatter any idealized illusions we might be holding onto when it comes to a project or a relationship. Don’t be afraid to let go of something that is no longer working for you. Or maybe you just need to put in the time to make your desire a reality.

Here’s what else the stars have in store for you in your weekly horoscope.

CAPRICORN

Your vision of how you want your life to look has changed, Capricorn. That’s okay. Change is good. Not everything has to go according to plan. Allow yourself to move in a radically different direction. Adventure beckons; answer the text.

AQUARIUS

Focus will help you determine which direction to go, Aquarius. You tend to get distracted by the next great idea, but this will only lead you towards chaos and you’re more about calm this year. Pick one. You can’t get it wrong.

PISCES

Clarity is one of your most basic tenets, Pisces. It helps your head stay above water. But sometimes the Universe, and humans, aren’t very cooperative with what you want. Which is why you need to give yourself clarity. You already know the answer.

ARIES

Cut yourself a break, Aries. It’s only January and you’re already thinking that you’re behind. Take a load off. Get yourself off the subject of what you’re desperate to achieve, and live a little. Life happens when we’re busy making other plans.

TAURUS

You might be stuck in the comparison game, Taurus. That is no bueno. You already have everything you need. If you can’t see that, then it’s time to make a list of your most amazing qualities and achievements. You were born for greatness. Remember that.

GEMINI

You’re ready for take-off, Gemini. Whether it’s a literal journey or a new venture, you’re ready for transformation and change. Be careful that your busy mind doesn’t forget the details that this entails, including contracts and the feelings of others.

CANCER

You’re longing for closeness, Cancer. While you enjoy your independence and isolation, you’re feeling lonely. Allow yourself to be vulnerable. Maybe that’s reaching out to friends or going on a dating app. It’s okay to say you need people.

LEO

This is the perfect time to get a sense of what you want for the rest of the year, Leo. Where do you want to go? Which projects do you want to work on? How do you want your relationships to feel? Knowing what you want will help get you where you want to go.

VIRGO

You’re all business this week, Virgo. Organizing and planning are things that bring you joy. You don’t need Marie Kondo. But you might need a little fun in your life. Because when we relax a little, we allow new things to enter our lives. Get a little messy.

SCORPIO

Your energy is a little heavy this week, Scorpio. You’re identifying what brings you the most peace and what doesn’t. You might be thinking of turning your life upside down. Do what you do best: investigate, research, and meditate until you feel lighter.

SAGITTARIUS

You’re in the middle of a whirlwind, Sagittarius. While it’s easy to cast blame, if you take a step back, you’ll see that everything you’re experiencing is a result of your thoughts and actions. Take responsibility and see how things change for you.

We’re still getting the hang of this year, bbs. So be gentle and patient with yourselves, and keep working towards your biggest dreams. We’ve still got 11 more months to make them happen!

Dry January: Why I’m Doing It Again — And What to Drink Instead

What to Drink Instead During Dry January

Ladies, are you doing #dryjanuary — or otherwise trying to back away slowly from alcohol? Do you have favorite mocktails to drink instead during Dry January? I did Dry January last year and found it really refreshing because I broke a lot of bad habits, and got a lot of clarity over when I actually want to drink instead of just drinking out of habit or because of social obligation. For example, most Fridays we have a regular dinner with extended family, and I found that that the first martini that my husband and I share is a really big thing for me. It’s an “us” thing (everyone else drinks wine), as well as a celebration of the week being done and the weekend arriving. On the flip side, it’s far too easy to get in the habit of pouring yourself a glass of wine while making dinner… or watching TV… or as just your default order if you’re meeting a friend out and about… and I find that glass of wine is hugely related to habit more than anything. It isn’t a celebration or a treat — it’s a reflex. Last year, Dry January actually extended into February for me because I got strep throat around my birthday at the end of January… and I lost eight pounds really easily, so there’s that. (Full disclosure: I gained all that back — plus most of my old habits or just as negative new ones — by mid-April — but I’m still grateful I did Dry January! I did really try to resist the pull of mid-week drinking without cause all year, though.)

So… what else to drink instead? I thought I’d round up some of my favorites… readers, are you trying to curtail your drinking as a New Year resolution or as part of Dry January? What are your motivating factors? What else do you drink?

What to Drink Instead During Dry January - infused water

Water or Infused Water

Something I’ve only recently realized is that everyone has the perfect temperature at which they like to drink water, and that it varies pretty widely from person to person. I haaaate lukewarm or room temperature water, but will happily gulp down ice cold water. (But no ice cubes.) In the summer I often freeze a half-filled Nalgene bottle, then add cold water to it to take with me if I’m running errands. I enjoy lemon water water but not so much that it’s worth the extra trouble to me. I once tried to make jalapeno/grapefruit-infused water based on a recipe I saw online, and…. that is too spicy for me.

What to Drink Instead During Dry January - tea

What to Drink During TV Time Instead of Wine: Tea

I feel like it was just yesterday that I hated tea… but I’ve been into it for a while now. (We had a nice discussion on the best teas a while ago!) Rooibos tea was my gateway, and I started drinking it because it had been recommended as a wine replacement. It is not that — but it has a nice, non-bitey taste to it, and it’s caffeine free so it’s a good option for late afternoons or evenings. If I want a sweet hit at night while watching TV or reading I’ll make myself some fruity herbal tea or chocolate mint tea. This mojito marmalade tea looks all kinds of awesome. Funnily enough, I’ve since acquired a taste for black tea and earl gray tea… but I still find green tea hard to enjoy.

What to Drink Instead During Dry January - seltzer

What to Drink During Meal Prep & Dinner: Seltzer

There are a TON of seltzers out there right now, and I’ve totally become the person who brings a case of Spendrift with me to parties in addition to wine and other nibbles. My favorite is Spindrift, but I’m also a fan of plain seltzer (or seltzer with a splash of juice) from the SodaStream (affiliate link) or LaCroix Cúrate in Cerise Limón.

what to drink instead during dry january - unicorn juice

Celebratory Non-Alcoholic Drinks:  Unicorn Juice

Readers turned me on to this, and it’s kind of fun to offer someone unicorn juice — it’s unflavored seltzer with a teaspoon or so of powdered pink lemonade. Yum!

what to drink instead during dry january - kombucha

What to Drink Instead When You Want Something a Little Zippy: Kombucha

Kombucha feels too expensive (and my fridge is too small) to drink it really regularly, but I like to have half a bottle or so during dinner every so often. (Note that kombucha has some alcohol content, but I believe it’s very small.)

what to drink instead during dry january - shrubs

What to Drink Instead During Dry January: Fancy DIY Mocktails

If you want to get fancier, you can start making fancier mocktails with bitters. I’ve even heard of people who use gin-making kits to flavor a club soda, or to soak the flavorings in hot water to make a large batch of gin-flavored tea to keep in the fridge, either to mix with tonic water or to use with the Sodastream. The Kitchn has a lot of fancy articles on mocktails, including one on shrubs (which, whoa, look really interesting and now I need to order some).

what to drink instead during dry january - Seedlip

What to Drink Instead: Non-Alcoholic Versions of Alcoholic Drinks

I’ve heard amazing things about Seedlip Spirits, but have never tried them myself. Non-alcoholic wine is… kind of vinegary, IMHO, but it does exist. When I was pregnant I liked O’Douls non-alcoholic beer because everything else tasted too sweet to me (I am really not a beer drinker otherwise). Here’s a recent roundup from Esquire on non-alcoholic beers, and from The Spirits Business on non-alcoholic spirits.

Readers, are you doing Dry January? What are your favorite things to drink instead during Dry January? If you’ve done Dry January before (or regularly take time away from alcohol), what have you learned during your dry periods?

Pantone’s colour for 2019, a UN charter for sustainable fashion, a TV show based on British Vogue in the ’90s, and other style news that caught our eye last month.

Fun Fashion Fact

Most people use the terms button-down shirt and button-up shirt interchangeably, but did you know there’s one detail that sets them apart. The Huffington Post explains it like this:

“Button-down shirts, like button-up shirts, have buttons running straight down the center of the front of the shirt. But button-downs have an extra set of small buttons right below the collar, and corresponding button holes on the collar tips, to fasten the collar down to the shirt”

According to Business Insider, button-downs were originally made for polo players so they could fasten their collars to their shirts during matches to keep collars from flapping up around their faces while they were playing.

5 Must-See Anime to Watch This January 2019

This year’s winter anime lineup is chock full of new and returning series, making it pretty easy to kick off the new year by adding a couple more shows to our list. After all, there’s no better New Year’s resolution than vowing to watch more anime. The new series premiering this month are sure to set you on the path to success. Here are the five anime series you need to watch this January.

W’z

  • Premiere date: January 6
  • Studio: Frontier Works and GoHands
  • Genre(s): Action, Music

In recent years, anime about music has become increasingly popular, and Frontier Works and GoHands add to the mix with their original anime collaboration W’z. The series follows Yukiya, a 14-year-old who DJs days and night. Like literally any other artist, Yukiya wants to be famous — and important. But Yukiya’s afraid of getting hurt, so he plays music for a crowd of one and uploads his videos online. Things take a turn when he comes across a mysterious live broadcast from “that world.” Yukiya always believed that he couldn’t achieve his dreams by himself, that he needed to work toward his goal with someone else.

Tokyo-based record label GOON TRAX will be in charge of the music, and various other musical artists will lend their talent to the series. Frontier Works and GoHands’ original anime project premieres this January.

The Cost of Smiles

  • Premiere date: January 4
  • Studio: Tatsunoko Production
  • Genre(s): Military, Mecha, Slice of Life, Drama, Fantasy

Anime studio Tatsunoko Productions (Psycho-Pass 2, Casshern Sins) is celebrating its 55th anniversary with an original anime, The Cost of Smiles. The studio describes their latest project as a story of two girls from a distant planet. There’s Yuuki, a cheerful 12-year-old princess who spends her days at the palace with her friends — and who can save the world with her smile. Then there’s Stella, a 17-year-old soldier who can only use her smile to protect herself.

Toshimasa Suzuki (Heroic Age, Fafner: Heaven and Earth) will direct the anime at Tatsunoko Productions, and Shinichi Inotsume (Gangsta., Persona 5 the Animation) will pen the script. NOB-C and Naoto Nakamura will bring the characters to life. How these two young girls’ paths become intertwined remains to be seen. But by the trailer alone we can see that The Cost of Smiles is overflowing with robot battles that mecha anime fans will undoubtedly enjoy.

The Kotobuki Squadron in the Wilderness

  • Premiere date: January 13
  • Studio: WAO World and GEMBA
  • Genre(s): Action, Military, Adventure

Girls und Panzer director Tsutomu Mizushima‘s new original anime, The Kotobuki Squadron in the Wilderness, will premiere this January. His latest project centers around a group of bodyguards for hire known as the Kotobuki Squadron. The group is led by a beautiful yet strict squadron leader who must keep her rambunctious squad under control. But when it comes time to fight, they take to the air to battle against the pirates that plague the skies, pushing their Hayabusa fighters to the limit.

According to Mizushima, the anime will be a combination of 3DCG and hand drawings. And unlike Girls und Panzer  — which featured various types of tanks from around the world —  the airplanes in The Kotobuki Squadron in the Wilderness are all Japanese-made. So, no foreign fighters will appear in the series. Make sure you tune in this January to follow this eccentric all-female group of fighter pilots working to protect the aerial shipping lanes of a vast wasteland.

Super Dimensional Revolution Anime: Dimension High School

  • Premiere date: January 10
  • Studio: Polygon Pictures
  • Genre(s): Comedy,  Live-action, School

While anime has dabbled in 3DCG animation there hasn’t been a series — if memory serves us right — that mixes anime with live-action parts. Luckily, Polygon Pictures is set to dive into this new venture. Their latest project, Super Dimensional Revolution Anime: Dimension High School, follows five high school boys in remedial school who get transported into an anime world. Their mission: to stop the god of destruction from taking over the 3D world. To do this, the boys must regularly cross between the anime world and real life, transforming from real people to animated characters and back again, as needed.

Yuuichi Abe (The Girl in Twilight, SD Gundam Force) will direct and write the hybrid anime for Polygon Pictures, while Izumi (Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru) will design the anime versions of the characters.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War

  • Premiere date: January 12
  • Studio: A-1 Pictures
  • Genre(s): Comedy, Psychological, Romance, School, Seinen

Based on the manga by Aka Akasaka, Kaguya-sama: Love is War takes teenage rollercoaster emotions to a whole new level. The anime adaptation follows Miyuki Shirogane, the smartest teenager in the country and the student council president of the prestigious Shuchiin Academy. Working beside him is the beautiful and wealthy vice president Kaguya Shinomiya.

Students often call them the perfect couple, despite the duo not being romantically involved. But after spending so much time together, the two develop feelings for one another. However, their pride makes it impossible for either of them to confess their love. So instead, they go to extreme lengths to get a confession out of the other. And so begins their daily schemes and antics to force the other to confess first. The first one to admit their love loses!

The romantic comedy is coming to Crunchyroll, Hulu, and FunimationNow this January.

5 Games We Can’t Wait To Play This January

A new year is here, and that means we have an entire twelve months of new games to look forward to! It’s going to be an odd year for gaming, with the life-cycle of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One winding down, and rumors of the next console generation already picking up steam. However, if tradition holds true, that means we are in store for some of the best and most ambitious games we’ve seen on these systems yet as developers push this generation of hardware to their very limits.

January 2019 looks like it’s going to kick this year in gaming off on a high note. With some tremendously anticipated sequels, a good number of ports and remakes, and some of the most talked about games in recent memory, there are going to be plenty of games to play and discuss. Set your 2019 gaming resolutions now —  once January begins there will be loads of great games to play right out of the gate.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

  • Release Date(s): January 11
  • Developer(s): Nintendo EAD
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch
  • Genre: Platformer

Here it is, the game that spun Super Mario lore on its head with the introduction of Peachette, and inadvertently spawned countless amounts of gender-bent fanart, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe! Continuing the trend of any remotely good Wii U game getting a Nintendo Switch Port, this platformer will receive a few added features, like new playable characters, in its migration to the portable console. As the third best selling game on the Wii U, Super Mario Bros. U definitely deserves a place on Nintendo’s latest, and maybe greatest, hardware.

While there’s no shortage of 2D Super Mario platformers, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is likely to be one of the best ones. The original had a staggering amount of content, and this port is set to have even more to do over the course of its Mushroom Kingdom adventure. At the very least, this is going to be one more incredible couch co-op game on the only console that seems interested in continuing that aspect of gaming.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season Ep. 3

  • Release Date(s): January 15
  • Developer(s): Telltale Games, Skybound Games
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: Adventure

Telltale’s The Walking Dead will premiere the third installment of the game’s final season this January, following a good amount of development turmoil and controversy. With the abrupt bankruptcy and imminent closure of Telltale Games, it seemed like the final two episodes would never come out. That is, until Skybound Games announced that they were talking over the project. Moreover, it seems like Skybound Games brought on most of the original staff behind the project, so purchasing this game will, in fact, benefit those who put countless hours into creating it.

It’s fair to say that the quality and fan reaction to The Walking Dead games are not what they used to be, but this is still the series that brought adventure games back into the mainstream. With just two episodes to go, this macabre and morally ambiguous adventure is drawing to a close, and it’s definitely worth seeing this piece of gaming history through to its conclusion. We can only hope that this former powerhouse of a franchise manages to sprint to its conclusion, rather than limp to the finish line.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes

  • Release Date(s): January 18
  • Developer(s): Grasshopper Manufacture
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch
  • Genre: Action

After almost nine years to the day, a new No More Heroes game will have players once again take control of the lovably insufferable Travis Touchdown as he fights to escape from a deadly video game. Even if it’s closer to a spin-off than a proper sequel to No More Heroes 2, Travis Strikes Again is likely to be a bizarre blast of a time. With apparent influences from Hotline Miami and an even more bizarre premise that its predecessors, Travis Strikes Again is on track to be one of the most distinctive games on the Nintendo Switch.

The No More Heroes series is definitely a more niche collection of games, which is a shame considering how much these games have to say about gamers and the gaming community. Just barely underneath the extravagant battles against superhuman assassins is a story about a man reluctantly leaving his own isolated lifestyle. If TSA commits to and executes its bizarre premise as well as the first two games did, it will definitely be worth checking out.

Resident Evil 2 (2019)

  • Release Date(s): January 25
  • Developer(s): Capcom R&D Division 1
  • Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: Survival Horror

The original Resident Evil 2 is considered by many to be the best installment in the long-running horror franchise, which is probably why it has so many ports. More than twenty years after its initial release, the classic horror game is getting a proper remake that promises to make full use of the affordances of modern hardware. Especially following the critical and commercial success of 2017’s Resident Evil 7, there are a lot of reasons to be excited about this REmake.

It’ll be fascinating to see how Resident Evil 2 translates into a modern horror game. The original game used the clunky controls and delayed inputs common at the time of its release to play up its horror and really drive home how powerless the player was against its undead foes. Hopefully, this remake manages to hold onto the fear and tension of the original while making the game more approachable to new audiences.

Kingdom Hearts III

  • Release Date(s): January 29
  • Developer(s): Square Enix Business Division 3
  • Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Xbox One
  • Genre: Action RPG

After more than a decade since the launch of Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts III will finally premiere at the end of January. Even with several canonical side games and numerous collections premiering in the interim, Kingdom Hearts III is still one of the most anticipated games in recent memory. Featuring numerous classic cartoon characters and themes that most people can relate to, it’s no wonder that this series means so much to so many people.

Fans of the Kingdom Hearts series were always going to play this game, but newcomers shouldn’t be afraid to give it a try either. While the series’ complex lore and numerous entries may seem like a hurdle, the Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far collection contains just about everything players need to know to get caught up. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with going into this game fresh and then checking out the previous titles, either. If it lives up to its predecessors, there’s sure to be something worthwhile in Kingdom Hearts III for everyone who plays it.

Comcast to Launch Two New Black TV Networks in January

Comcast Corp. is adding two new African American majority-owned independent networks to be broadly distributed on Comcast Cable systems beginning in January 2019. The selected networks, AFRO and CLEO TV, will showcase programming that highlights and features black communities around the diaspora. The announcement, however, came just days before a federal appeals court cleared the way for Bryon Allen’s Entertainment Studios Networks to pursue a $ 20 billion lawsuit against the cable operator on the grounds of racial discrimination.

More Representation In Media

TV One’s Cleo TV focuses on lifestyle and entertainment content targeting young women of color. Afro, which is owned by the Florida-based company Afrotainment, features movies, TV series, and other programming representing cultures in Africa and across the globe. In addition to being broadly distributed on Comcast Xfinity, the channels will be offered on Comcast’s basic tier digital platform in select markets, making them available to millions of subscribers online. This will provide the networks with a major boost and help fill the void in the lack of quality and diverse black-oriented media content.

“The offerings from both AFRO and CLEO TV serve as an excellent complement to the growing catalog of programming choices we offer about global black communities,” said Keesha Boyd, executive director, Multicultural Products at Comcast Cable, in a statement. “We remain committed to delivering a wide array of programming by partnering with independent networks, such as the two we’re announcing today, to better serve our increasingly diverse customer base.”

The announcement is part of a bigger deal that Comcast inked with the FCC and DOJ back in 2011 when it acquired NBCUniversal. In order to receive federal approval for the merger, Comcast agreed to launch eight minority-owned and/or –operated networks. This included ASPiRE in 2012 and REVOLT in 2013 along with four Hispanic-focused channels.

“We are excited to bring AFRO’s live content and growing on-demand catalog of more than 300 hours of original programming to millions of Xfinity customers. Comcast’s selection of AFRO, which is a recognition of the rich diversity in black content and culture, solidifies our position as a leader in polycultural black home entertainment in North America,” said Yves Bollanga, founder and CEO of Afrotainment, in the statement.

“We’re at a pivotal moment in history where women are making a huge impact in our society and culture, especially women of color,” said Michelle Rice, TV One’s general manager. “CLEO TV will offer a diverse mix of lifestyle and entertainment content through the unique lens of millennial and young Gen-X women of color, an audience segment that is currently underserved.”

Scrutiny

On Monday, a federal appellate court ruled that Entertainment Studios can pursue a lawsuit against Comcast for alleged violations of the Civil Rights Act, according to Variety. The company has also been granted legal clearance for a similar suit against Charter Communications for $ 10 billion. Allen, a media titan who graced the May/June 2018 cover of BLACK ENTERPRISE, claims that both Comcast and Charter refuse to carry his networks because of his race. The comedian-turned-mogul settled a similar suit back in 2015 with AT&T’s Direct TV, which now carries seven channels produced by his company.
