Japan just sent a privately-funded rocket into space for the first time ever

japan rocket launch

SpaceX is already a household name around the globe, but there’s no shortage of other startups vying for their slice of the private spaceflight pie. Companies like the Jeff Bezos-led Blue Origin are doing some pretty impressive things, and a relatively new startup out of Japan just hit a big milestone as well.

The company, named Interstellar Technologies Inc, launched its MOMO-3 rocket into space over the weekend, reaching an altitude of over 100 kilometers before running out of steam and tumbling back down to Earth. The rocket, which is part of the company’s long-term plan of providing satellite launch services to commercial partners, is built using many parts that are readily available from a variety of manufacturers.

Top hiking places in Japan

With how popular it is to go traveling these days, it can be invaluable finding somewhere truly breathtaking that isn’t completely overrun by eager tourists; even if you are one yourself. Japan is one of those places that many people forget about, especially when Japan is famous for a few key things. When most people think of Japan, it’s probably the fact that it’s one of the world’s most innovative and technologically advanced countries in the world, as well as the home to some specific pop culture inventions. However, one of Japan’s best-kept secrets is that it is home to some of the world’s most phenomenal views, and the best part is, you can reach them on foot! So, read on to discover the top hiking trails in Japan.

Mount Mitake

Mount Mitake is one of the most scenic hikes, and it had been rated somewhere between an easy and medium hiking difficulty. This is great because it means you don’t have to be a pro to do this trail. Experts have suggested that this trail is best walked in either the spring or the autumn, due to the natural beauty these seasons bring. It’s a shorter trail and only takes two hours if you start from the city. This particular trail is through the mountains of Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park; a national park is never to be bypassed.

Mount Mitake

Mount Yoshino

Mount Yoshino is a UNESCO world heritage site and is a big part of the ‘Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range’ along with Kumano and Mount Koya. This place is home to over 30,000 cherry blossom trees which adorn the roads leading to the mountain. This small place may be out of the way, but it has a rich and ancient history which may surprise you.

Iya Valley

Iya Valley can be located between two mountains in the depths of Shikoku island, one of Japan’s smaller islands. This is a particularly exciting trail, filled with valleys and rope bridges called Iya Kazurabashi. This is the light adventurer’s dream, as the trail will continually change from hopping over stones to being in the middle of the ancient Japanese countryside. Ivy Valley is not for first-time hikers or inexperienced adventurers; this trail is ‘rocky’ at best but can be a thrilling experience and memory.

Rebun Island

The northern Rebun island also belongs to a national park and is home to some unique flora. This island offers some beautiful views from the trails and can be reasonably accessible for the inexperienced hiker. The best time to visit this area is in the summer months, as the winters can be incredibly harsh and you may not want that kind of an icy challenge. You can also find maps of their most popular trails, color coded so you can easily choose your difficulty level. Each experience will be unique.

Rebun Island

Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain, and they have four tracked trails that you can choose from. As with hiking up any mountain, you should be experienced and have taken plenty of safety precautions. Once you have done this, you can enjoy the novelty of mountain hiking, and it will be an experience you’ll never forget.

Japan has kept its trails and countryside authentic and truly beautiful, and no matter which one you choose, you will experience something truly unique.

Etienne Russo Held in Japan on Suspicion of Marijuana Smuggling

TOKYO — Fashion-show producer Etienne Russo was indicted in Japan on Friday on charges of cannabis smuggling after being arrested weeks prior, according to reports by Japanese media.
Customs officials at Narita Airport outside of Tokyo are said to have found a liquid that they believe was extracted from cannabis, packed in Russo’s luggage. The founder of Villa Eugénie entered the country on Nov. 30 for the Dior men’s pre-fall fashion show that was held in Tokyo. He is said to have been seen at the show, but has been in custody since early December.
Russo and his event production firm Villa Eugénie are popular among luxury brands, having worked on shows not only for Dior but also for brands including Hermes, Thom Browne and Dries Van Noten. He makes a brief appearance in the new Netfilx series “7 Days Out” documenting preparations for a Chanel couture show.

Japan has very strict drug control laws, with zero tolerance and tough penalties for offenders. Use and possession of cannabis is punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine, whereas cultivation, sale and transport are punishable by up to 7 to 10 years in prison and a fine.
Russo will be held

A foodie tour of Osaka, Japan

In Japan’s second city, a night out means ‘scoffing until you drop’ – so our writer asks a couple of local experts for help exploring the stalls, cafes and bars

The woman on the early morning train from Osaka station made swift work of a large noodle-stuffed omelette, and just as I was thinking that was a substantial breakfast for a far from substantial person, it was out with the chopsticks again as she set about a generous bento box, its nine compartments filled with rice, fish, veg and pickled bits and bobs.

But that’s Osakans for you: prodigious appetites for food and, in marked contrast to Tokyoites, also for drinking and general fun. You have to love a city that has a word for “scoff till you drop”. Kuidaore literally means “eat to ruin” (whether that’s financial or physical is not specified).
