Patrick Stewart Joins the 'Charlie's Angels' Reboot; Here's Everything We Know

The Angels are heading to the big screen once again. Originally a TV series in the 1970s, Charlie's Angels was later adapted into a 2000 action comedy that continued the canon of the show, and that spawned one sequel three years later. In 2011, there was a TV series reboot on the small screen, but it was very short-lived. Now, Sony is bringing the property back to theaters with a new version that will hopefully start a new film franchise.

Idris Elba Joins Indie Film ‘Ghetto Cowboy’; Reportedly In Official Running For James Bond

Idris Elba will definitely play an estranged father in North Philly, and is now seriously being considered to take over as Agent 007 in the James Bond franchise, according to new reports.

First, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Elba will star in and produce the indie film Ghetto Cowboy. The film follows 15-year-old Cole, who is forced to live with his estranged father, Harp (Elba), in north Philadelphia where, despite the surrounding poverty and violence, he discovers the redemptive world of urban horseback riding.

The movie is based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Greg Neri. Dan Walser and Ricky Staub wrote the screenplay, with Staub set to make his directorial debut on the project.

Elba will produce under his Green Door Pictures banner, along with Jeff Waxman, Jen Madeloff, Sam Mercer, Tegan Jones and Dan Walser.

As for Bond, James Bond… rumors of Elba replacing Daniel Craig creeps back into the rumor mill this week after word that franchise producer Barbara Broccoli said that Elba is indeed under consideration.

According to the UK’s Daily Star, the news comes from Equalizer 2 director Antoine Fuqua, who has nothing to do with the Bond franchise, but said he recently had a conversation with Broccoli. Apparently, she indicated that it’s time for the spy to be played by an actor of color, and Elba, 45, is at the top of her list.

Broccoli or MGM has yet to confirm or deny this report.

Fuqua went on to ponder the thought of Elba’s physical ability to tackle the role.

“Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that,” he said.

Though Thompson’s story sounds very similar to the litany of other allegations brought to light by women over the past seven months, it adds a fresh layer of (alleged) insidiousness from Weinstein’s lawyer.  Read more…

Kaiser Permanente Joins de Beaumont Foundation as National Partner in CityHealth Initiative to Create Vibrant, Healthy Communities

WASHINGTON D.C. — Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest integrated health system, is joining forces with the de Beaumont Foundation, a leader in public health philanthropy, to help U.S. cities thrive through the CityHealth initiative.

Created by the de Beaumont Foundation to promote practices that make cities healthier, CityHealth tracks and reports on proven policies, and works with cities to advance policies that achieve community health priorities. Through this new relationship, Kaiser Permanente will leverage its deep expertise in health policy, government relations, and community-based prevention to accelerate cities’ efforts to improve people’s health and quality of life.

“CityHealth embodies the de Beaumont Foundation’s core belief that policy is one of the most powerful tools to improve health,” said Brian C. Castrucci, the Foundation’s CEO. “We’re excited to have Kaiser Permanente join us in this effort to transform health in cities across the country.” CityHealth is an example of the Foundation’s focus on building cross-sector partnerships and offering practical tools and data to improve public health.

Bechara Choucair, MD, senior vice president and chief community health officer at Kaiser Permanente, said, “We share the de Beaumont Foundation’s belief that the power of local policy is one of the most promising and effective strategies for transforming health in America, and we are pleased to join them in this important work. The CityHealth initiative provides mayors and other community leaders an opportunity to harness some of that transformational power to improve health, drive down health care costs and save lives.”

For Kaiser Permanente, this partnership complements the organization’s established approach to community health — bringing together health leaders, clinicians and community partners to help solve the social, economic and environmental health challenges facing its 12.2 million members and the 65 million residents who live in the communities it serves.

Dr. Shelley Hearne, president of CityHealth, said, “We know that where you live has an enormous influence on how healthy you can be. This innovative partnership between two national leaders is a way to catalyze change in city governments so that every resident has the opportunity live a healthy life. Working with city leaders through CityHealth, the de Beaumont Foundation and Kaiser Permanente will bring a pragmatic menu of policy options to create real results in American cities, like better pre-K programs for kids and more public places with cleaner, smoke-free air.”

Founded in 1998, the de Beaumont Foundation’s programs and investments strengthen the public health system, facilitate collaboration, and provide practical tools to improve the health of communities and people’s daily lives. It is solely focused on public health and seeks innovative and transformational solutions for the most pressing needs of communities across the country.

“By joining the Coalition of Kaiser Unions, Local 5 members join with the Hawaii Nurses Association and 120,000 other unionized Kaiser professional employees all over the United States,” said Eric Gill, the union’s secretary-treasurer. “Through the Coalition, we now have new and valuable tools of partnership to work with Kaiser Permanente towards goals — like quality patient care and service — that both union and management people share, and to help ensure that Kaiser Permanente employees continue to set the standard for fair and competitive wages and benefits for Hawaii health care workers.”

The Kaiser Permanente Labor Management Partnership is the largest and longest-lasting partnership of its kind in the country, established in 1997 as an integrated and strategic approach to contract negotiations and collaborative care delivery. All parties work together to improve the quality of care for Kaiser Permanente members while providing industry-leading wages and benefits to employees.

“We are pleased to create this partnership with UNITE HERE Local 5, whose members play an integral role in our health care team,” said Jean Melnikoff, vice president, Human Resources at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “Our coalition partners have an active voice in strengthening care delivery decisions and work alongside our providers and health plan leaders to provide the highest levels of patient-centered care.”

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii Joins Hawaii Public Health Institute to Focus on Public Health Priorities

HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente Hawaii is supporting Hawaii Public Health Institute with a $ 80,000 community benefit grant to continue their mission of improving population health through policy, systems and environmental changes. HIPHI’s efforts to research, identify and advocate for public health priorities will improve the health and wellness of Hawaii residents by shaping policies and systems that affect them.

HIPHI has released its 2018 Public Health Forecast and Priority Legislation agenda identifying the state’s top public health concerns for the year. HIPHI’s public health agenda was developed in collaboration with partners and distributed to lawmakers and Gov. David Ige on opening day of the 2018 Hawaii state legislative session. The agenda identified tobacco prevention and control, healthy eating and active living, family health, population health, environmental health, economic justice, education and healthy workforce as areas of focus for lawmakers.

Among the top priorities are tobacco-related education and regulation, with a focus on electronic smoking devices and youth tobacco prevention. HIPHI’s activities surrounding tobacco prevention include a legislative informational briefing on electronic smoking devices; bills to tax and regulate these devices and introduce tobacco-free school buffer zones; and an educational video on the dangers of tobacco and vaping. Priority legislation for HIPHI also includes promoting healthy beverages in children’s restaurant meals and establishing positions in the Department of Education to implement a Farm to School program.

“After listening to our stakeholders, conducting extensive research and analyzing policies from different states, we are excited to introduce our first public health legislative agenda and collaborate with lawmakers this session,” said Jessica Yamauchi, executive director of Hawaii Public Health Institute. “With so many issues to tackle, we’re grateful for the support of Kaiser Permanente and our partners as we work together to shape policies that will have a positive impact on our community.”

“HIPHI brings together community organizations, government officials, business leaders and researchers in support of a common goal: to improve overall health and wellness in Hawaii,” said Frank Richardson, vice president and regional counsel, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “Its mission aligns with our efforts to address the most critical health issues facing our community today.”

Mayweather Joins All-Black Billionaire’s Club; Here Are the Other Members

sports

The Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match was more than just surprisingly competitive and compelling. It also made Mayweather the only boxing champ to score a remarkable 50-0 record and is projected to catapult the superstar fighter into in an elite class of athletes who’ve earned over $ 1 billion during their career.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather

According to Forbes, “the money fight” will likely gross around $ 700 million, making it the richest fight in boxing history. The exact amount of revenue will be confirmed later on this week once details about the pay-per-view sales are disclosed.

Meanwhile, Mayweather, who has generated $ 700 million in his career, is slated to earn $ 300 million from that one night, which would tip his career earnings to $ 1 billion. Here’s a breakdown of how the richest boxer of all time has made money.

After this fight, Mayweather would become the third professional athlete to reach this extraordinary benchmark following Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Here’s a look at how these two world-class athletes earned $ 1 billion, along with a breakdown of why LeBron James will likely join this exclusive club.

Michael Jordan

(Image: File)

Although Jordan is regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time, he only made about $ 90 million during his stellar career in the NBA. However, thanks to lucrative endorsements, like his lifetime deal with Nike, and big investments, like his purchase of the Charlotte Hornets, he was added to the Forbes $ 1 billion list in 2015, for the first time. Today, his net worth is estimated at $ 1.2 billion. Here’s how Forbes calculates his earnings:

He was the NBA’s highest-paid player only twice during his 15-year career. His total career playing salary was $ 90 million, but Jordan has earned another $ 1.3 billion (pre-tax) from corporate partners since he left U. of North Carolina in 1984. His biggest backer has always been Nike, which generates nearly $ 3 billion in annual revenue from the Jordan Brand. Nike commands 90% of the U.S. basketball shoe market, with the Jordan Brand representing more than half of that. MJ also maintains his longtime endorsement relationships with Gatorade, Hanes and Upper Deck. His biggest single investment is his 90% stake in the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets. When he bought a majority stake in 2010, the team was valued at $ 175 million. It is now worth $ 780 million. He also owns seven restaurants and a car dealership.

Tiger Woods

(Image: File)

Woods’ became the first billionaire in sports back in 2009. However, his stock and public persona took a major hit following his notorious sex scandal in 2009. As a result, the iconic golfer lost big endorsement deals. Plus, he has failed to win a major tournament since 2008. His net worth currently stands around $ 740 million.

LeBron James

(Image: Twitter/KingJames)

The next athlete projected to join the club is King James, himself. In 2016, James signed a mega lifetime deal with Nike worth more than $ 1 billion. He also has endorsement deals with Coca-Cola, Verizon, Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s, and Microsoft. He received a big payout as an owner of Beats Headphone in 2015 when the company was acquired by Apple. As a result, he made roughly $ 30 million. In addition, he and his longtime friend and business partner, Maverick Carter, own 17 franchise restaurants and a production company.

Today, James’ net worth is estimated to be $ 400 million, however, with his business acumen, it will only be a matter of time before he reaches billionaire status.

African American Business Magnate Joins Senator on Mission to Maximize Our 401(k)s

With retirement savings being a key wealth-creating tool, black workers can use some help from Uncle Sam to build up their future nest egg.

That conclusion comes as reports claim that Americans have already lost $ 2 trillion collectively in savings by not transferring 401(k) retirement accounts from one employer to another.

Robert L. Johnson, chairman of The RLJ Cos., a portfolio of companies with holdings in several industries, including the RLJ McLarty Landers Holdings L.L.C., the the highest-earning black-owned auto company with revenues of $ 1.6 million and ranked No. 1 on the 2017 BE Auto 50 list) and majority owner of Retirement Clearinghouse, is among those supporting Sen. Tim Scott, R-South Carolina, for his leadership to reduce retirement plan leakage.

(Robert L. Johnson. Image: File)

In a letter to Department of Labor Secretary R. Alexander Acosta, Scott and 10 Republican senators are requesting that the DOL allow for the usage of 401(k) auto portability. That transaction would allow workers to move 401(k) savings from an existing job to a new job, something they cannot do now.

Advocates Request Feedback

The letter precisely asks the DOL to offer an advisory opinion or other guidance clarifying the application of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) to auto-portability of retirement savings. The senators pointed out that a similar request was sent to the DOL in April 2013.

“We are concerned that the continued delay of the Department’s AO is a hurdle to the implementation of a workable, market-based solution that will help our constituents prepare for their retirement.” They stated further, “Without the DOL’s guidance, plan sponsors and others lack clarity around what can be done under the law to facilitate auto portability.”

The stakes are high on the retirement issue. The letter cites research from the Employee Benefit Research Institute that systemwide use of auto portability for all retirement balances could boost private-sector savings by about $ 2 trillion. It states halting leakage from smaller accounts alone would save $ 1.5 trillion.

Big 401(k) Problem: Millions of Americans Change Jobs Each Year

About 14 million Americans on average change jobs each year, with about 40% opting to “cash out” their 401(k)s instead of shifting those funds to another retirement account, Scott says.  He added these “cash outs” incur penalties and taxes, leading to a $ 70 billion annual loss in savings. The highest “cash out” rate occurs with workers with the smallest account balances, those that are $ 5,000 or less. In many cases, those workers are black.

(Sen. Tim Scott. Image:
U.S. Senate Photographic Studio-Renee Bouchard)

Aiming to prevent that from happening, the  letter states “reducing leakage and consolidating low-dollar accounts through the greater  use of auto portability will set millions of working Americans on a better path to a secure retirement.” Scott believes that his auto portability option could result in more than 2 million employees opting to keep their savings in retirement accounts instead of “cashing out” and incurring losses,” something that could hurt them financially as they approach retirement.

In response, a DOL spokesman said, “The Department welcomes new ideas on ways to help America’s workers manage their retirement accounts as they change jobs in today’s  mobile economy. We have been working with company representatives on their request for an advisory opinion or other guidance, and will continue to do so.”

Retirement-Focused Trade Groups Back Petition

Several trade groups endorse Scott’s letter, including the American Retirement Association, American Benefits Council, Financial Services Roundtable, Investment Company Institute, Insured Retirement Institute, Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and U.S. Chamber of Commerce to name a few.

Effort Could Help Narrow Wealth Gap Between Blacks and Whites

One of Johnson‘s companies, Charlotte, North Carolina-based Retirement Clearinghouse, offers employee retirement transition services and is an authority on auto portability. Johnson has been a leading proponent of closing the wealth gap between blacks and whites, using auto portability as one of the ways to accomplish that.

“As a businessman committed to finding business solutions to social problems and an employer of minority workers, I know firsthand the importance of retirement savings to close the wealth gap,” Johnson said in a statement. “I am calling upon Secretary Acosta to demonstrate President Trump’s commitment to improving the economic status of minority Americans by issuing an Advisory Opinion on auto portability. ”

“By doing so, the Secretary will demonstrate to African Americans, as I urged the president to do so last Fall, what African Americans stand to gain from a Trump administration. Over the coming generation, auto portability will preserve more than $ 480 billion in savings for low-wage working Americans and more than $ 698 billion in savings for all minority workers.”

‘Complicit Ivanka’ Johansson Joins Alec Baldwin For Final ‘SNL’ Hallelujah

The entire “White House” crew of “Saturday Night Live” gathered, one by one, around Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump at the piano for a soulful rendition of a last “Hallelujah” on the finale of one of the most memorable and politically charged seasons of the 42-year series.

At the lyric “I told the truth, I didn’t come to fool ya,” Baldwin took his hands from the piano keys but the piano continued to play. Kate McKinnon’s Kellyanne Conway held up crossed fingers.

The cold-open “Hallejulah” was part of an episode that wrapped up a season of skewering the White House. It could have been a farewell to the besieged Trump administration — or it may have marked Baldwin’s last turn at playing the president.

Gathered around the piano were the Grim Reaper playing Steve Bannon, and Mikey Day and Alex Moffatt’s dopey Trump brothers. Cecily Strong turned up as first lady Melania Trump and Scarlett Johansson was back as daughter Ivanka in a gold lame gown from her March skit plugging her perfume Complicit (”a fragrance for the woman who could stop all this — but won’t”).

Beck Bennett was Vice President Mike Pence — instead of his usual Vladimir Putin — and Aidy Bryant stood in for Sarah Huckabee Sanders. (Putin was represented by the Russian flag pin on Baldwin’s lapel.)

The song came full circle from the “SNL” episode following the presidential election when McKinnon sadly sat at the same piano to sing the song to honor the late Leonard Cohen — and lament the electoral loss of Hillary Clinton. “I’m not giving up, and neither should you,” McKinnon told her audience then.

This time Baldwin wrapped up his “Hallelujah” and declared: “I’m not giving up because I didn’t do anything wrong… but I can’t speak for these people.”

The episode was bittersweet, as it remains unclear if Baldwin plans to return as Trump after this season. He has said the role was getting depressing because of the “maliciousness” of the administration, and worried that people won’t be amused much longer by the president. “If everything stays the same in the country… I don’t think people will be in the mood to laugh about it,” he said in March.

But he has since left the door slightly ajar to the possibility of returning. “Look, I’d love to keep doing this per my availability, but I have other things I’m going to do, so I guess we’ll figure it out,” Baldwin told The Hollywood Reporter last week.

What American Idol Rumors? Kelly Clarkson Joins The Voice As a Coach

American Idol rumors, be gone! Kelly Clarkson is joining The Voice.

In an announcement on Thursday, NBC revealed that the Grammy winner is set to be one of the coaches for season 14 of the reality singing competition series.

“I’m so excited to join The Voice at NBC,” Clarkson, 35, said in a statement. “We’ve gone back and forth about a role as a coach for years, but the timing hasn’t been right until now.”

Continued the star, who’s joining veteran judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine: “I have always loved appearing on the show as an adviser or performer and established an amazing relationship with the network during my Christmas special. I can’t wait to turn my chair and see the faces of up-and-coming artists and provide them with the help and support they’ve needed to break into the industry. Watch out Shelton, I’m comin’ to win!!”

Shelton, 40, also took to Facebook Live on Thursday to announce the exciting news with his close pal.

“Hey! I’m finally not knocked up and I can join your show!” teased Clarkson after Shelton FaceTimed her. “I know, my gosh, can you stop getting pregnant every five minutes please?” joked Shelton.

“I know I’m done having children, so now I can join The Voice,” Clarkson shot back. “I’m excited. I’ve been excited. Blake was telling y’all I’ve been excited about this for a few years now … the timing hasn’t been right.”

As Voice fans know, Shelton has been the long-reigning champ of country singers on the show, but it looks like Clarkson is about to give Shelton a run for his money.

FROM COINAGE: 7 Most Expensive Music Videos

“I just want Blake to know that I know he’s been on the show before and like showed maybe an award or two to show what he could do, so I just thought y’all I’d show you a few of my accolades. My peers love me. The people love me,” said Clarkson, while showing off all of her awards, including her 2011 CMA award for Musical Event of the Year.

“I’m just saying you’re not the only one bringing country people. What!” added Clarkson with a laugh. “I’m to win! I am excited. You know, I love The Voice. I can’t wait to turn a chair.”

Joked Shelton: “If you can just make it through a year without getting pregnant that would be great for all of us. Okay? Just try that.”

Clarkson, who is also in the studio working on her upcoming album, joins a star-studded list of coaches. On Wednesday, it was announced that Jennifer Hudson will be one of the season 13 judges, along with Shelton, Levine and Miley Cyrus. (According to the network, a fourth coach for season 14 will be named at a later date.)

“Kelly has been a part of ‘The Voice’ family for many years as an adviser and performer. We are thrilled she has chosen to join us as a coach to mentor the next generation through our unique vocal boot camp,” said Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment. “Every time Kelly Clarkson sings you are reminded what an incredible voice really is. We are looking forward to the sound of Kelly Clarkson on ‘The Voice.’”
