Two Nigerian Brothers Arrested In Alleged Attack Of Jussie Smollett

In the Jussie Smollet investigation, police have now arrested those 2 men who are brothers with ties to “Empire.” Specifically, they were booked for battery.

The two brothers, Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo, are from Nigeria and Chicago cops are now calling them “potential suspects” … as opposed to persons of interest. As was reported earlier, their home was raided on Thursday and police seized a long list of potential evidence … including several bottles of bleach.

A Chicago law enforcement source tells TMZ that the next step may be a lineup in which Jussie will be asked to identify the culprits.

Jussie Smollett Believes the Two Persons of Interest on Surveillance Footage Are His Attackers, Police Say They’ve Been Identified But Are Not Suspects [Video]

Jussie Smollett is convinced the two men in the surveillance photo released by police earlier this month are the two men who attacked him.

via TMZ:

Jussie appeared on ‘GMA’ Thursday, and was clearly frustrated some people don’t believe his story.

The 2 men in the surveillance photo are considered “persons of interest” but not suspects by the Chicago PD. Cops tell us the video shows the 2 men on the other side of the street from Jussie, but there is a 60-second gap in the video.

Jussie went on to explain why he refused to give his phone to cops so they could validate his story that he was talking to his manager at the time of the attack and the manager heard it go down. Jussie explained he had various private photos, videos and phone numbers and did not want that data compromised.

He tells Robin Roberts about his injuries and why he kept the rope around his neck until police arrived.

In a statement released Thursday, police said they identified the two people in the surveillance photos and tracked their movements using cameras, public transportation records and corroborating info provided by Smollett.

Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for Chicago Police Department, said the two persons of interest are not suspect and have not been charged. Police said there is no evidence that they were involved in the attack.

After suffering a brutal attack in Chicago, Jussie Smollett has canceled the meet and greet that was supposed to take place tonight before his performance at the Troubador in Los Angeles. The event was canceled due to safety reasons.

“For security reasons we cannot accommodate any meet & greets,” the email that was sent to fans said according to TMZ. The email was sent to all the fans who purchased meet and greet tickets letting them know that their money will be refunded.

The Empire star was assaulted by Trump supporters early Tuesday (Jan. 29) morning while on his way home after a flight from New York to Chicago. Two white men in ski masks reportedly brutally beat Smollett, leaving him with fractured ribs. They also poured bleach on him and put a noose around his neck and screamed  “This is MAGA Country.”

Almost two weeks before the attack, a note with cut out letters was reportedly sent to FOX Studios addressed to Smollett that read “You will die black f—-t.” In the top corner of the envelope, the senders wrote MAGA.

The incident is being investigated by Chicago Police.

Smollett released a statement after the attack thanking fans for their support.

“Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served. As my family stated, these types of cowardly attacks are happening to my sisters, brothers and non-gender confirming siblings daily. I am not and should not be looked upon as an isolated incident. We will talk soon and I will address all details of this horrific incident but I need a moment to process.”

Jussie Smollet Update: Trump Response, Actor Arrived Home With Rope, Won’t Turn Over Phone

CHICAGO (AP) — Detectives have recovered more surveillance footage of “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett walking in downtown Chicago before and after he says he was attacked by two masked men, including video of him arriving home with a rope around his neck, but they’re still searching for footage of the attack, a police spokesman said Thursday.

The video from a surveillance camera at Smollett’s apartment building showing him arrive home with a rope around his neck is part of a larger effort to obtain as much footage as possible of his walk from a Subway restaurant to his apartment at around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said detectives, who are investigating the case as a possible hate crime, have pieced together more footage from the hundreds of public and private surveillance cameras in that area of downtown Chicago, which is home to many high-end hotels and restaurants. But they still haven’t found video of the attack or the men who match Smollett’s description of the suspects, he said.

Smollett, who is black and gay and plays the gay character Jamal Lyon on the hit Fox television show, said the men beat him, subjected him to racist and homophobic insults, threw an “unknown chemical substance” on him and put a thin rope around his neck before fleeing. He returned to his apartment afterward and his manager called police from there about 40 minutes later, Guglielmi said. When officers arrived, the actor had cuts and scrapes on his face and the rope around his neck. Smollett later went to a hospital for treatment.

Guglielmi said there are still many more videos for investigators to collect and go through as they try to get a complete picture of Smollett’s walk home. It is tedious work that is made more difficult because the time stamps on various cameras may not be in sync, meaning detectives have to figure out the exact times of events, he said.

“It’s like putting together a puzzle,” he said.

Guglielmi said Smollett and his manager told detectives they were talking on the phone at the time of the attack, but that the 36-year-old actor declined to turn over his phone records to the detectives, who routinely ask for such information during criminal investigations.

Smollett has not spoken publicly about the attack, but his representative told The Associated Press on Wednesday night that the actor was at home and recovering. Smollett’s family issued a statement through a spokesman Thursday saying the actor was the victim of a “racial and homophobic hate crime” and pushing back against any suggestion that he was anything but truthful with the police.

“Jussie has told the police everything from the very beginning. His story has never changed, and we are hopeful they will find these men and bring them to justice,” the family said.

Police are hoping to identify and talk to two people who were walking in the area at the time of the attack and whose grainy image the department released. Guglielmi stressed that the people are not considered suspects and that police want to question them because they were in the vicinity and might have useful information.

Reports of the attack drew a flood of outrage and support for Smollett on social media. Some of the outrage stemmed from Smollett’s account to detectives that his attackers yelled that he was in “MAGA country,” an apparent reference to the Trump campaign’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

President Donald Trump, expressed sympathy for Smollett on Thursday.

“That I can tell you is horrible. It doesn’t get worse,” the president told reporters when asked about the matter. The spot where Smollett says he was attacked isn’t far from the Trump International Hotel & Tower.

The FBI is investigating a threatening letter targeting Smollett that was sent last week to the Fox studio in Chicago where “Empire” is filmed, Guglielmi said. The FBI has declined to comment on the investigation.

In addition to his acting career, Smollett has a music career and is a noted activist, particularly on LBGTQ issues. Smollett’s representative said his concert scheduled for Saturday in Los Angeles will go on as planned.

Now in its fifth season, the hourlong drama “Empire” follows an African-American family as they navigate the ups and downs of the record industry. Smollett’s character is the middle son of Empire Entertainment founder Lucious Lyon and Cookie Lyon, played by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, respectively.

Chicago has one of the nation’s most sophisticated and extensive video surveillance systems, including thousands of cameras on street poles, skyscrapers, buses and in train tunnels.

Police say the cameras have helped them make thousands of arrests. In one of the best-known examples of the department’s use of the cameras, investigators in 2009 were able to recreate a school board president’s 20-minute drive through the city, singling out his car on a succession of surveillance cameras to help them determine that he committed suicide and had not been followed and killed by someone else, as his friends speculated.

Jussie Smollett Cancels Meet and Greet Over Security Concerns After Attack

Playing it safe. Jussie Smollett, who was attacked in an apparent hate crime that left him hospitalized in Chicago on Tuesday, January 29, has canceled a scheduled meet and greet with fans in L.A. over safety concerns, TMZ reports.

According to the outlet, ticket-holders for the Empire actor’s show at the Troubadour on Saturday, February 2, received an email informing them that Smollett would not be appearing for the meet and greet portion of the show.

“Jussie is so honored to perform for his fans, friends and family on Saturday night,” the email read. “However, please forgive us. For security reasons we cannot accommodate any meet & greets. Your meet & greet upgrade can either be refunded, or donated to the Black AIDS Institute in your name … Thank you for understanding and thank you for your continuous love and support.”

Earlier on Friday, the Marshall star, 35, spoke out about the attack for the first time. “Let me start by saying that I’m OK. My body is strong but my soul is stronger. More importantly I want to say thank you. The outpouring of love and support from my village has meant more than I will ever be able to truly put into words,” he said in a statement to Essence on Friday, February 1.

The actor continued: “I am working with authorities and have been 100 percent factual and consistent on every level. Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served. As my family stated, these types of cowardly attacks are happening to my sisters, brothers and non-gender conforming siblings daily. I am not and should not be looked upon as an isolated incident. We will talk soon and I will address all details of this horrific incident, but I need a moment to process. Most importantly, during times of trauma, grief and pain, there is still a responsibility to lead with love. It’s all I know. And that can’t be kicked out of me. With Love, respect & honor … Jussie.”

One day prior, the Mighty Ducks star’s family released a statement to Us Weekly about the incident, saying, “In the early hours of Tuesday morning, our beloved son and brother, Jussie, was the victim of a violent and unprovoked attack. We want to be clear — this was a racial and homophobic hate crime. We are so grateful that God saw him through this cowardly attack alive. Jussie is a warrior whose light cannot be dimmed.”

Celebrities, including Smollett’s Empire costars, Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, also spoke out against his attackers and gave some insight into the “Hurt People” singer’s state of mind.

“You know, he’s angry, but I know Jussie,” the Oscar nominee, 49, said during an appearance on Good Morning America on Wednesday, January 30. “Jussie’s anger will dissipate and he will forgive these people for what they did. But he won’t — and we cannot — forget their actions. They have to be forgiven because it was done out of ignorance.”

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed to Us on Tuesday that Smollett, who spoke about his sexuality to Out magazine in March 2016, was hospitalized after being assaulted by two unidentified subjects who yelled “racial and homophobic slurs toward him.”

“The offenders began to batter the victim with their hands about the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim,” Guglielmi told Us. “At some point during the incident, one of the offenders wrapped a rope around the victim’s neck. … Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime.”

Smollett transported himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was released on Tuesday in “good condition.”

Chicago police confirmed to Us on Wednesday that they had found potential persons of interest in a surveillance video.

Us has reached out to Smollett’s rep for comment.

Jussie Smollett Hate Crime Investigation Update — Chicago Police Are Expanding Their Search, Unable to Find Video or Photos of Assailants

The Chicago Police Department has issued a statement with an update on their investigation into Jussie Smollett’s racist and homophobic attack.

The FBI has taken over the investigation related to the threatening letter Jussie received last week, but as far as the actual attack itself police have been canvassing the area looking for surveillance footage.

TMZ reports that police visited a Target store near where the incident happened and they were able to retrieve some footage. A source says the footage shows just one person — presumably Jussie — walking down the street.

Anthony Guglielmi, Chief Communications Officer, tweeted that the department is expanding its search radius after being unable to find video or photos of the alleged attackers or any vehicles.

We’ll keep you updated as the investigation unfolds.
