Keep calm and don’t carry on when parenting teens

In a new study, psychologists find that mothers and fathers who are less capable of dampening down their anger are more likely to resort to harsh discipline aimed at their teens, and that fathers in particular were not as good at considering alternative explanations for their teens’ behavior.

Amazon, DoorDash will keep the controversial tipping policy Instacart just ditched

TwitterFacebook

Instacart heard the cries of an angered internet and took action. Amazon and DoorDash, on the other hand, seem content to dig in.

It was online anger that led Instacart to change its policy on tips, which were previously used to pay the base wages of the company’s gig-economy delivery workers. As anyone who has ever worked in a service industry will tell you, tips are additive; it’s money you’re paid on top of your base wage.

“Tips should always be separate from Instacart’s contribution to shopper compensation,” Instacart CEO Apoorva Mehta wrote in an email to employees.  Read more…

How to Keep Your Spirits High When Life Stinks

There was an interesting reader threadjack recently about how to keep morale high when your confidence is wrecked and everything feels like it’s going wrong, either at work, in life, or everything. I’m going through one of these times myself at the moment (it’s been a trying week, mostly for complicated kid-related reasons I won’t get into) but… yeah. Sometimes things stink. So, I’d love to hear your suggestions — and here are ideas that have been suggested in the past…

  • Enforce boundaries. If things are going wrong at work, make sure that your home is your haven — we’ve talked in the past about how to build work-life boundaries as well as to how to keep your work life separate from your personal life. Some of our tips on how to focus on work may also be of help
  • Give your brain a break. If things are going wrong and you’re dwelling on them, we’ve talked about how to stop overthinking. We’ve also discussed how to help your brain switch gears by focusing on your senses (also helpful to turn a bad day around!) — go shopping and touch the different fabrics as you pass, or consider baking bread to knead/pound/have sensory fun playing with something gooey.
  • Focus on what you need to. Don’t make things worse by letting things slide. Whether it’s life or work that are making things horrible, we all still have our daily obligations. Picking a different workspace to work in (like a conference room or even just the visitor’s side of your desk) can help you focus on work when other things threaten to distract you.
  • Get your cardio in. I’m desperate to fit a run in at some point today because the weather was too poor to do it last week and I feel like it’s exacerbating everything. If you’re under the gun with a work project and you have no time, try to fit in cardio to get your heart rate up — take a 5-minute break to climb stairs at your office, do pushups on the floor, or if you have the space (and a private office) try a few kettlebell swings. As we’ve noted before, dancing or singing to silly music can also be a great pick-me-up and a great break to build into your day. (Perhaps I need to change my alarm song — right now it’s Gossip’s 2012. I’m off to review our last discussion on everyone’s favorite girl power songs…)
  • Laugh. We haven’t had a thread on this in far too long: What are your favorite hilarious things to perk you up, ladies? (I am not really an animal person, but for those of you who are, please share your favorite memes/kitties/etc.). I died laughing at the Peloton Twitter thread that went viral, but so much comedy (late night and SNL) is tinged with politics right now that it often makes me more stressed out when I’m in those moods. Some of the classics (for example, “Baby Trashes Bar” or  “Mean Kitty“) are still some of my favorite light-hearted YouTube things.
  • Make a list. There are two ways to do this: One option is to make a list of your accomplishments, the things that are going right, and/or the things you’re grateful for. The OTHER option is counterintuitive, but I’ve found it’s helped me sometimes — make a FUBAR list, noting every single thing that is dragging you down. Doing a brain dump really helps, and it’s always kind of amusing after the cloud has lifted to go back and see EVERYTHING on your list because you realize that most of it doesn’t matter… then the next time the mood hits you can sort of remember how you laughed at everything after the fact.
  • Mini-meditation. Meditation has all sorts of benefits, but it can take time and discipline to feel like you’ve getting benefit from a meditation practice. This 60-second meditation is great, and we talked about some other helpful meditation apps a few months ago (like the Apple Watch Breathe app).
  • Enforce the 24-hour rule. This is a good guideline for weight loss, but it also works if you’re having a lousy time with a coworker, a boss, a life situation… try to envision what a “good” next 24 hours look like for you, and then commit to making it happen. In weight loss parlance that may mean pre-planning your meals; for work it may mean pre-planning your day so you build in cardio, a dance party, a YouTube break, or other mood-boosters.

Readers, what are your best tips for keeping your spirits high when life stinks?

Psst: These are more than quick fixes, but we’ve also talked about how to make time for therapy in a busy life, as well as how to make time for friends when you work a lot.

Courts say anti-abortion ‘heartbeat bills’ are unconstitutional. So why do they keep coming?

Time and again, when it’s introduced in a state legislature, the bill is touted as the most restrictive in the nation. In a new announcement, also out of China, researchers reveal that they’ve cloned a handful of new monkeys as well, but this time around the donor monkey was genetically modified to exhibit specific disorders associated with hormone imbalance and mental health.

Coalition Pressures Amazon, Microsoft, and Google to Keep Facial Recognition Surveillance Away From Government

A coalition of more than 85 activist groups sent letters to Microsoft, Amazon, and Google pressuring them not to sell their facial surveillance technology to the government.

In its letters sent Jan. 15, the coalition–which comprises groups including the American Civil Liberties Union, National Lawyers Guild chapters, and Freedom of the Press Foundation–warned the companies that a decision to supply government with the technology “threatens the safety of community members and will also undermine public trust.” That’s because facial recognition software gives the government the power to target immigrants, religious minorities, and people of color, thereby exacerbating a historical bias, according to the coalition.

“Companies can’t continue to pretend that the ‘break-then-fix’ approach works,” Nicole Ozer, technology and civil liberties director for the ACLU of California, said in a statement. ” … We are at a crossroads with face surveillance, and the choices made by these companies now will determine whether the next generation will have to fear being tracked by the government for attending a protest, going to their place of worship, or simply living their lives.”

The letter adds pressure to technology companies, whose sentiment toward selling the new technologies range from cautious to eager.

Google, at least, appears to be treading lightly. In December, the company committed not to sell its facial recognition surveillance software until the technology’s potential dangers are addressed.

That came a couple of months after several Google employees quit in protest of the company’s $ 10 billion bid for a contract with the Pentagon over cloud data center services. Ultimately, Google withdrew its bid for the project, called the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure cloud, citing uncertainty that the project aligned with its principles for the use of artificial intelligence. Google bans the use of its AI software in weapons and services that violate international norms for surveillance and human rights.

Similarly, Microsoft employees also pressured executives to pull its bid for the JEDI project. At the time, however, Microsoft said it had no intentions of dropping out.

In a December blog post, Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, acknowledged the risks associated with facial recognition surveillance technology and its obligation to address those concerns internally. He also pushed for government regulation in regards to the use of the technology.

And on the other end of the spectrum, Amazon continues to sell its facial recognition software to government agencies. Last year, CEO Jeff Bezos told CNN that society would eventually take care of any bad uses of the technology.

Earlier this month, the FBI reportedly began piloting Amazon software called Rekognition to help sift through surveillance footage collected during an investigation. Amazon also reportedly met with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to discuss Rekognition.

The ACLU is particularly concerned about Amazon and its technology, as a test it conducted last year showed that Rekognition falsely matched 28 members of Congress with images in a database of people arrested by police, with members of color disproportionately being identified incorrectly.

Alone for the Holidays? Here’s How to Keep Yourself Sane

Source: Vladimir Vladimirov / Getty

For some, the holidays are the best time of the year. It means spending quality time with friends and family, holiday parties and gifts galore. For others, the holidays can be less than cheerful and seem to have a special way of making you feel awful if you’re spending the season alone.

Maybe you’re getting over a recent break up or the loss of a loved one. Maybe you’ve moved away for work or school and can’t afford to make it home in time for the holidays. Whatever the scenario, let’s be honest: being alone over the holidays sucks…and the fact that the entire world is talking about it definitely doesn’t make being alone feel any better.

If you’re one of those feeling a bit lonely this season, you’ll be surprised to know that you’re actually not alone as the holidays can be one of the loneliest times of the year. In an effort to keep your spirits up in spite of being alone, we’ve complied a few coping mechanisms to help you get through the last few days of the year. Here’s a few ways to stay sane if you’re alone during the holidays:

Create Your Own Tradition

Starting your own tradition is a great way to distract yourself from being alone over the holidays. If you have other friends, coworkers or neighbors who are also spending the holidays alone, it might be a great opportunity to start your own “Friendsgiving” or “Christmas Brunch” where you can bond over great food, great drinks and great conversation.

If you’re not up for the group activity, you can start a solo tradition too. Maybe go to the movies on Christmas, or take yourself ice skating, or treat yourself to a nice fancy dinner. If you adapt a tradition you love, you might find yourself actually looking forward to spending the holidays to disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself.

Helping Others

Volunteering and helping others is a sure way to lift your spirits when you’re feeling down. Just knowing you’ve made a difference in someone’s life by giving back will help bring a smile to your face and remind you of how fortunate you truly are.

You can give back in many ways over the holidays by collecting toys and warm clothing for those less fortunate, delivering meals to the elderly, spending time at a nursing home or even donating to your favorite charity. Bringing joy to someone else is a beautiful way to experience joy yourself.

Set Realistic Expectations

You might feel lonely during this time of year simply due to the fact that society has placed such huge expectations on what it means to celebrate the holidays. Everywhere you turn, there are romantic holiday movies playing, family Christmas portraits being hung and social media posts giving off false perceptions that everyone is living their most picture-perfect lives.

Not having a significant other or close family might only seem weird during the time when we’re “supposed” to be going to parties, exchanging gifts and spending time with those we love. Combat those feelings by re-thinking your expectations and realize that nobody’s life truly measures up to the Hallmark Channel movies you’ve been binge watching all weekend. Instead, shift your focus to the great things you do have in life and realize that your holiday is perfectly fine just the way it is.

Remember What You’re Grateful For

Expressing gratitude might seem like something simple, but it actually has many benefits that’ll help bring you out of your holiday slump. It’s hard to focus on being thankful and feeling lonely at the same time. For example, if you’re feeling down due to the lack of love in your life, be thankful for the love that you do have whether it be from friends, family or even your pets.

Keeping a gratitude journal is also a great exercise you can try to get you in the habit of recording everything you value in life. It’s even more rewarding to read through your list of grateful moments the next time you’re feeling down.

Prepare Yourself for The Coming Year

There’s no better pick me up than reflecting on everything you’ve accomplished this year and figuring out your plan for how you’ll level up even more next year. Rather than sitting around feeling lonely, you can spend the holidays writing down your dreams and goals for the coming year and mapping out a plan on how to achieve them.

You can try creating a vision board, reading self-help books, writing motivational notes to yourself or simply writing down your list of goals using your notes app. No matter your tactic, focusing on how great the coming year can be will definitely lift your spirits and help take your mind off of feeling alone!

A Safer Way to Keep Kids Pain-Free

Opioid abuse is a public health crisis, causing an average of 115 deaths in the U.S. every day. But while abuse often starts in childhood, pediatric opioid use has received little attention.

Kaiser Permanente developed a program to address this need by reducing the use of opioids after pediatric tonsillectomy. It replaces codeine — known to increase the risk of respiratory depression and death in children — with the non-opioid painkillers ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

“The ‘why’ is very clear,” said Anna Grosz, MD, the head and neck surgeon who spearheaded the effort in Oregon and Southwest Washington. “We know that opioids are risky, and we want to keep kids safe.”

Within 18 months of launching the program, Dr. Grosz and her colleagues had reduced the use of opioids in young children by 67 percent.

Encouraged by their success, they set out to spread the program across Kaiser Permanente. To date, the organization has achieved a six-fold reduction in pediatric opioid use after tonsillectomy.

“Opiate reduction saves the lives of our children,” said Dr. Grosz. “Who could argue against that?”

Ho, Ho, Ho! This Christmas, Phaedra Parks Wants You To Keep Your Peach ‘Sweet & Fresh’ With These Products

Atlanta Junket For The New Warner Bros. Movie EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING

It’s no secret that Phaedra Parks is the queen of side hustles. Not only is she a lawyer and a mortician, but she is now dabbling in the feminine products game.

Enter: My Healthy Peach.

According to TMZ, the former Real Housewives of Atlanta co-star is collaborating with Tatianna Knights RN, BSN, a labor and delivery nurse, for a new line to help women have “a nice juicy fresh peach and a sweet peach.”

“I am introducing a new product line. You know I’m known for my ‘badookadonk,’ but my new product line has to do something about…with your vagina,” Phaedra said during a recent gathering of friends at her Atlanta home for a “Ladies Night Out” event.

“So my new product line ‘The Healthy Peach,’ is about not having a tart peach,” the mother of two said. “I want the peaches to be sweet and fresh.”

“My Healthy Peach will make you juicy and sweet.

The line, which is free of sulfates, parabens and most harsh chemicals, seems to be doing well. According to the company’s website, the $ 12.50 box of wipes appear to be sold out.

In addition, it appears that Phaedra is making amends with her former cast mates, including Nene Leakes. Here’s a picture of her, Nene, Greg Leakes and Cynthia Bailey celebrating Nene’s birthday.

“#birthday#joy with @neneleakes @greggleakes@cynthiabailey10 @marlohampton@tammepha #reunited and it felt good 😜,” she wrote.

“We keep in touch and we talk,” Phaedra revealed on a recent episode of TV One’s Sister Circle. “Her husband is going through Cancer, so I’ve been trying to support her.”

Phaedra also hinted that she is open to returning to RHOA–if asked.

“And you know never say never, it’s a new year who knows,” she offered. “But like I tell people I’m an old-fashioned girl and I have five degrees as we all know. So I really don’t have to do anything I don’t want to. I have companies, and jobs and businesses.”

Guess only time will tell if she returns to the Bravo hit show AND if these wipes will continue to keep selling out.

The best cashmere jumpers to keep you snug all winter

I am obsessed with cashmere, and if you visit me on any given Sunday, you’ll find me lounging in a cashmere jumper and joggers. Extra, I know, but I just haven’t found anything as comfortable and durable, so I personally think spending a bit more is a good investment.

With that in mind, keep scrolling to shop my edit of the best cashmere pieces out there, and how to care for them.

What is cashmere?

You might know that cashmere is a more luxurious type of wool, and therefore expensive, but do you know why? That is because it comes from a specific type of goat, the cashmere goat, which produce finer, softer hair. Each goat sheds its hair once a year, and there isn’t much of it, so it makes it rarer, and so pricier.

How to wash cashmere

I’ve ruined many a cashmere jumper because I’ve either been too lazy or ignorant to wash it by hand. So first off, you’ll want to check the care label as some cashmere jumpers are machine washable (M&S do a great line), but others aren’t. Usually, you’ll need to wash them by hand in warm – but not hot – water, or in certain rare cases, dry clean only. Make sure you also lay it flat to dry so that it doesn’t lose its shape, we have a full guide on how to wash and store cashmere here.

Best cashmere jumpers

There really is cashmere to suit all budgets. On the high street, you’ll be hard pressed to beat John Lewis & Partners, M&S, GAP or Uniqlo, which all have a great range of jumpers and cardigans in various colours, under £100. If you’re looking to invest in a designer piece, then Chinti & Parker, Vince and Bella & Freud have some fashion-forward styles I think you’ll love.

Keep scrolling to shop my edit of the best cashmere pieces out there, from jumpers to scarves and joggers. Whilst some pieces are pricey, if you care for them well then they will last you a lifetime, and you just can’t beat that cosy factor. Also, don’t be afraid to shop the men’s collections, I love the baggy feel, which goes really well with this season’s slip skirts.

Amber Davies has urged her fans to keep an eye on their drinks after hers was spiked

OHMYGOSSIP — Amber Davies has urged her fans to keep an eye on their drinks after hers was spiked.
The former ‘Love Island’ star was hospitalised on Friday (16.11.18) after reportedly collapsing in a pub and she admitted having someone slip drugs into her beverage was something she “never thought” would happen to her.
Amber is now recovering and feels “grateful” to be back home.
She shared a statement on her social media accounts which read: “Thank you so much for all your kind words.
“Getting spiked is something I never thought would happen to me, but I’m so grateful to be home and safe.
“Thank you to my family and everyone who helped me, especially Glan Clwyd Hospital.
“Reminder to never leave your drink out of sight.”
Amber had been out with a friend at the Plough Inn at St Asaph, North Wales, when she collapsed in a car park outside the pub, prompting staff to call for an ambulance.
An onlooker said: “At about 11.20 she was walking up and down the car park with a guy.
“She suddenly hit the floor. She was completely unconscious.
“People came out of the pub to help her and put her in the recovery position.
“She was screaming like she was in agony.
“Paramedics were asking people if she’d taken anything. But no one saw her taking drugs.”
Amber was taken to the Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan and treated for around three hours before she was allowed home.
Despite Amber’s belief her drink was spiked, the bar manager previously insisted he had “no reason” to think there had been drugs on the premises.
The Plough manager Dafydd Jones said: “I have no reason to believe drugs were taken on the premises.
“I will be speaking to North Wales Police with regards to the incident.”

Google Paid Android Inventor Andy Rubin $90 Million to Keep Quiet After He Was Credibly Accused of Sexual Misconduct, Report Says

Android’s creator, Andy Rubin, received $ 90 million from Google to resign without fuss after the company found an accusation of forced oral sex by a former girlfriend and Google employee was credible, the New York Times has reported.

Google did not deny the story’s substance to the Times, and its CEO and HR chief told employees in email after the article appeared that 13 senior managers have been fired in the last two years for sexual harassment. None of them, they said, had received an “exit package” paid for agreeing to leave.

A personal spokesperson for Rubin denied the substance of the story to the Times, and said Rubin left of his own accord and did not engage in misconduct, nor have a relationship with a direct report or one that was other than consensual while at Google. Rubin and Google did not reply to requests for comment from Fortune.

The alleged incident that led to Rubin’s departure from Google involved a former romantic partner who worked in the Android division. In 2014 she told Google’s human resources department that, after she was no longer interested in the relationship, she had met with Rubin in a hotel room in 2013, according to the Times. She accused Rubin of then forcing her into oral sex, and she ended the relationship, the report says.

Rubin joined Google in 2005 with the acquisition of Android, a company he had co-founded, to build smarter mobile devices. According to the Times, Rubin engaged in multiple relationships with other Google employees. In 2009, he married one, Rie Rubin.

Rie Rubin filed for divorce May 24, 2017. Court filings show the divorce is not yet final. On Sept. 17, a court ordered Andy Rubin to pay nearly $ 80,000 a month in child support. Many aspects of the proceedings and filings were sealed because of minor children. (Andy Rubin hasn’t spoken publicly of children, and his ex-wife has mentioned them only in passing in an article about a now-closed bakery, and on social media.)

On Oct. 3, 2018, she filed a civil lawsuit against Andy Rubin. The case was temporarily sealed at Andy Rubin’s request on Oct. 11 until a hearing on Dec. 3. Rubin’s attorneys argued, among other points, that “journalists and others will publicize the allegations if allowed to learn of them.”

The Times report maintains that Larry Page, Google’s co-founder, encouraged Rubin within the company and felt Rubin hadn’t received enough compensation for his role in Android. This led to a $ 150 million stock grant issued in Sept. 2014, even after the sexual-assault investigation was underway. The Times reports that it was unclear if Page or the board knew of the investigation when the grant was approved.

However, Rubin was earlier passed over, in 2013, to run a combined Android and Chrome team. Sundar Pichai got the nod instead. Pichai went on to become Google’s CEO when the firm shifted to a holding company structure with Google as a separate division and crown jewel.

After the sexual assault allegation was reportedly found credible by Google, the Times says Page made the decision to push Rubin out. Rubin left in Oct. 2014.

Rubin went on to co-found a venture-capital firm, Playground and later founded a smartphone maker, Essential, which laid off part of its staff a few days ago after disappointing sales of its first phone model.

Rubin was briefly on a leave of absence from Essential after the news site The Information reported on a 2014 complaint at Google that appears to be one of the elements of the Times story. At the time, Rubin said the relationship was consensual and not someone in his managerial area.

The story also documented with named and anonymous sources other incidents of sexual harassment, inappropriate remarks, and relationships that crossed lines of reporting.

Hours after the story appeared, the company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, sent email to employees that noted 48 people had been terminated in Google in the last two years, “including 13 who were senior managers and above,” and that none received an exit package. The email was co-signed by Google’s HR chief, Eileen Naughton.

WHY ALL THE TECHNOLOGY FOR A BATTERY BACKUP SYSTEM?

For too long, customers have demanded more without results. They have asked for equipment they can remotely “keep an eye on,” or at least get an alert to their phone if an alarm occurred or if equipment needed attention. Zoeller Company’s Aquanot® Active 508 offers technology that accomplishes far more than this, even incorporating unique features like “Boost” mode, fail-over circuitry, an constant pump performance.

As this is the premier product in the category, we designed it to avoid the neglect and dormancy inherent in these applications which are in standby mode in the dark, lonely corner of residential basements. The “Active” system benefits from exercise, supervision, and reporting information that helps save property.

The Aquanot® Active 508 is a high performance, self-testing, battery backup sump pump system with unique features and multiple redundancies. 11 Things to Keep by the Front Door

When it comes to decorating and organizing, the foyer is often the last place homeowners think to touch. In far too many homes, it’s just a bleak portal for passing in and out of the house without a second glance. And that’s a shame, because the entryway is a prime piece of real estate and, when considered properly, can help make your day a little easier. The key is in keeping certain essentials by the front door where you won’t overlook them on your way out, or establishing an assigned place for everyday items. Here are 11 items that deserve a spot near your front door.

Keep the Kids Busy for Free at Bass Pro Shops This Halloween Season

I’m not an outdoorsy person, but I’m a fan of Bass Pro Shops for one reason: They know how to do the holidays right with free activities for the kiddos.

My daughter’s first experience trick-or-treating was at Bass Pro Shops in Atlantic City, New Jersey, when she was 2 years old. This year, the outdoor recreation retailer is hosting eight days of free Halloween fun. There will be crafts, games, costume parades, photos with Charlie Brown and the gang and — of course — trick-or-treating.

Events will be held at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s stores, which are owned by the company. About 170 locations in 45 states and Canada will get in on the Halloween spirit with the exception of the retailer’s Islamorada, Florida, location.

The festivities start two weekends before the holiday. On Oct. 20 and 21 from noon to 5 p.m., children can create Frankenstein crafts, pose for photos and play pumpkin toss — a holiday-themed version of bean bag toss — for the chance to win small prizes. The stores will be selling a photo package for $ 5, but you can get one free 4-by-6 photo without buying anything.

From Oct. 26 to 30, the Frankenstein craft will be swapped out for a vampire bat craft. Families can go to Bass Pro Shops on Oct. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. to make crafts and take photos.

More activities are scheduled the Saturday before Halloween (Oct. 27) with treat-or-treating from 3 to 5 p.m. and a costume parade at 4 p.m. The store’s pint-sized visitors can also make crafts, play pumpkin toss and take photos from noon to 5 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 28.

The action is light the two days leading up to Halloween — Oct. 29 and 30 — with just crafts and photos from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Halloween celebration culminates the evening of Oct. 31 with events from 4 to 8 p.m. Guests can take photos, play pumpkin toss and create crafts — this time a scarecrow — throughout the entire time.

From 5 to 7 p.m., children can decorate a cookie. Trick-or-treating will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. At 6 p.m., kids can walk in a costume parade.

My little one enjoyed her time collecting candy and making crafts at Bass Pro Shops. And I loved that I didn’t have to spend a dime.
