Good sleep quality and good mood lead to good working memory with age

A team of psychologists has found strong associations between working memory — a fundamental building block of a functioning mind — and three health-related factors: sleep, age, and depressed mood. The team also reports that each of these factors is associated with different aspects of working memory. Working memory is the part of short-term memory that temporarily stores and manages information required for cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, and comprehension.

Peter Mayhew dead – Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill lead tributes to Chewbacca actor after Star Wars icon passes away

HARRISON Ford and Mark Hamill have led the tributes to Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew after he died aged 74.

The 7ft 3in actor, who played the iconic Wookiee in five Star Wars movies, passed away “with his family by his side” on Tuesday.

Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the iconic film series, remembered his co-star as the “gentlest of giants”.

He tweeted: “A big man with an even bigger heart who never failed to make me smile and a loyal friend who I loved dearly.

“I’m grateful for the memories we shared and I’m a better man for just having known him. Thanks Pete #RIPPeterMayhew #Heartbroken.”

Harrison Ford, who portrayed Han Solo in the franchise, paid a heartbreaking tribute to his Millennium Falcon co-pilot, saying: “I loved him”.

“Peter Mayhew was a kind and gentle man, possessed of great dignity and noble character,” he said.

“These aspects of his own personality, plus his wit and grace, he brought to Chewbacca.

“We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him. He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience.

“Chewbacca was an important part of the success of the films we made together. He knew how important the fans of the franchise were to its continued success and he was devoted to them.

“I and millions of others will never forget Peter and what he gave us all. My thoughts are with his dear wife Angie and his children. Rest easy, my dear friend.”

Fellow co-star Billy Dee Williams, who played Lando Calrissian in Star Wars, tweeted: “Much more than Chewie to me.

“My heart hurts…I will miss you my dear friend…thanks for the great memories! #RIPPeterMayhew #StarWars.”

George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, also paid tribute.

In a statement, he said: “Peter was a wonderful man. He was the closest any human being could be to a Wookiee: big heart, gentle nature – and I learned to always let him win. He was a good friend, and I’m saddened by his passing.”

Mayhew’s family has not revealed what the cause of his death was.

He played Chewbacca in Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), Revenge Of The Sith (2005) and The Force Awakens (2005).

During filming of The Force Awakens Mayhew shared his role with Finnish actor Joonas Suotamo.

His family said: “Peter was the man behind the mask of Chewbacca in the original Star Wars triology, episode 3 of the prequels and the New Triology.

“He fought his way back from being wheelchair-bound to stand tall and portray Chewbacca once more in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“He also consulted on The Last Jedi in an attempt to teach his successor.

“He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame of the films from his knock kneed running, firing his bowcaster from the hip, his bright blue eyes, down to each subtle movement of his head and mouth.

“But, to him, the Star Wars family meant so much more to him than a role in the film.”

Mayhew got the role in the original Star Wars film after creator George Lucas needed a tall actor to play hairy alien Chewbacca.

David Prowse, who was 6ft 6ins, was originally in the frame but chose instead to play Darth Vader.

Lucas discovered Mayhew, who was chosen purely for his height.

Mayhew, from Surrey, was born with Marfan syndrome – a connective tissue disease that caused his great height.

He had undergone spinal surgery last July to try and improve his mobility.

Mayhew was much loved on the Star Wars convention circuit and wrote two books “Growing Up Giant” and “My Favourite Giant”.

‘GENTLE GIANT’

A statement said: “We are so very sad to have to inform you all that Peter Mayhew who was Chewbacca in the Star Wars films passed away last night at his home in Texas.

“Peter was a real gentle giant and a very quiet, shy and beautiful person! A one-off!

“The Chewbacca role was more Peter playing himself on screen and the question of how much of Peter is Chewie and how much of Chewie is Peter will never be worked out as they really were one and the same.

“Peter loved playing Chewbacca as he could put away his shyness and become a roaring Wookiee when he needed to be.”

He used his fame to support charitable work, ultimately setting up the Peter Mayhew Foundation to support a variety of causes.

That work will continue under the leadership of his wife, Angie.

Mayhew is also survived by his three children.

A memorial service for family and friends is planned for June 29, and a memorial for fans will take place in December at EmpireConLA.

His family said: “As he grew older he continued to ‘soldier on’ as he put it and was completely in his element around fans and supporters.

“He grew great strength from the energy of his family, friends and the fans he knew and loved.”

AT&T Taps Lena Waithe For Lead Mentor In Filmmaker Mentorship Program

AT&T has announced that Emmy-winning writer/producer Lena Waithe has been tapped as the Lead Program Mentor for the 2019 edition of AT&T’s Hello Lab Filmmaker Mentorship Program.

The initiative, which began in 2017, aims to help filmmakers from underrepresented communities work on their craft and to provide them with major platforms, such as Direct TV, to showcase their work.

Waithe will select five screenwriters whose projects will be financed and produced by AT&T. She will also pair each writer with an up-and-coming director who will help bring their vision to life. The program puts an emphasis on diversity; pulling talented women, people of color, and content creators from the LGBTQ+ communities. Each of the mentees will be given access to the full filmmaking process; including meeting with everyone from casting directors to top-level executives.

Lena recently dished with Complex about her involvement with program… peep the Q&A below.

How did you to get involved with the Program, and what it was about the program that you were hype about?

I think that what excites me so much is that me and my executive Rishi Rajani over at Hillman Grad, we really are big into not just mentorship, but we’re always searching, looking for new talent. We found that we had a lot of really cool interesting directors in our pocket, a lot of really cool writers that we knew that we were trying to put on shows and help get their shows made.

Every now and then you get a writer/director who is amazing, but there’s just not that many amazing writer/directors out there. I wanted to do this the right way. Because of [our working relationship last year], they were kind enough to say “Look, you really found something special, and you seem to know a lot of these people, why don’t you do all of them next go around?” That’s what we’re really excited about, is to really put this together in a really cool way so that we can [find] even more writers and directors. That, to me, is really exciting.

How involved are you with the mentees that are selected?

It’s a bit of a team effort. Rishi, who is really out in the trenches and out there every single day while sometimes, like today, where I’m in the writers room working on The Chi as we started on season three, so where it stands we’re like I have to be focused on that, and he is always like, “Hey Lena, this is a person you should know, this is a person you should check out, I think we should give this person opportunity to do it,” and I’m like “Oh great, love it, that person’s great, love that person” or sometimes I’ll say “Hey, I don’t think that person’s ready yet, do you have any other options?” And usually, when those scripts are done I’ll take a look at them, read them, give my thoughts, give my feedback, and then what we really try to do is [get] people who are great, o we don’t have to babysit. I think there’s this sort of weird misconception that just because someone is new, they usually don’t know what they’re doing. It just means they haven’t gotten an opportunity yet to show their stuff.

Look, not everybody succeeds, sometimes people falter, and we have to pick up the pieces and make sure everything is cool. It’s really on us to take people that are responsible, take people that are ready, take people that we’ve been following for a few years. It all works hand-in-hand, but we don’t put them on the position unless we know that they’re ready for it. For me, yes, we’re sort of mentoring our program, but in essence, it’s helping us.

The industry is constantly looking for people of color, women, people who are queer, people who are not able-bodied because they know it’s almost like a mandate—you can’t just have a bunch of white guys directing your shit. Everybody has to be on their A-game because if somebody’s a new person, they’re coming in, they’re hungry, they’re ready, and they’ve got a story to tell, I’d rather go with that new person with a new, fresh perspective, who is coming ready to work.

This year, you’re bringing in a more musical element to the Program, with an incentive on finding unsigned producers and musicians and working on music videos. What drove that expansion?

The big thing we’re trying to do is we are trying to help bring music videos back. We have some amazing directors that also could use some shine. To me, it’s sort of like a two-fer. Kill two birds with one stone, where you hear a really beautiful song, and we also want to really elevate the music video, because I feel like so many music videos are so literal. They go straight down the middle; there’s no real plot put into it.

Back in the day, the real artists used to get movie directors to do their videos. RIP John Singleton, he directed Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time” music video. I was like, “why not have these budding feature directors, TV directors, bring their aesthetic, their visual ideas to these songs?” This is a director who has a vision [working on] your song. More often than not, you’re going to get something very cinematic, very unique, because they think in a cinematic way. It’s really exciting because I always love matching up certain artists with certain directors where you were about to go “What? That don’t make sense.” And then you get something really unique and really fresh that comes out of it, so we’re really excited for people to see that.

Meet the Black Woman Promoted by Elon Musk to Lead Diversity at Tesla

Executives leading the charge in diversity and inclusion are leaning more towards the practice of belonging to create more inclusive work environments. Felicia Mayo, vice president of HR & head of diversity at Tesla is one of those leaders. Her journey as a human resources professional spans over two decades with executive HR roles at PwC, Oracle, and Juniper Networks. After working 19 years in Silicon Valley, she was sought out by Tesla and promoted by its founder Elon Musk to lead their HR and diversity initiatives.

It was a simple as a phone call from someone in her network who knew she could add to and elevate the way Tesla handles business when it comes to belonging.

Business Leader Versus Diversity Leader

After getting an inside look into the company and the interviewing process, Mayo decided she wanted to engage in diversity and inclusion holistically by looking at the total business of Tesla and being able to see where she could leverage her tools which include, but aren’t limited to, HR technology, operations, compensation benefits, business strategy, and talent acquisitions.

“Once you see diversity as an add-on or a program, you fail. And that definitely is something that I’ve always tried to stay clear of them, making sure that I am seeing not just seen as this diversity and belonging or inclusive leader that I’m seen as a business leader,” said Mayo.

“Coming in as a business leader versus just as a diversity leader allowed me to have different connections with different leaders as well as it allowed me to really grow my career here at Tesla really quickly. I could be leveraged in many different ways,” says Mayo.

It was just after a year and a half at the company that Musk promoted her from senior HR director and head of diversity and inclusion to VP of the role where she reports directly and works closely with Musk and vice president Kevin Kassekert.

“Allowing Tesla employees, regardless of their demographic, to feel like they belonged to the staff, is the mission of the company, and the strategy of the future of the company is monument. And ultimately means allowing them to bring their whole selves to work every day and feeling like they belong in the workforce.”

Bringing Her ‘Whole Self’ to Work and Confronting Tesla’s Racism Allegations

As a person of color, in some tech spaces, feeling like you belong is a challenge, however, adding the automotive industry to the mix can make things more complex. That is why Mayo practices showing up to work as her authentic self to set the standard.

“I am who I am. I am Felicia. And that does not change when I walked through the door. So when you see me outside of Tesla, I am Felicia. It is refreshing to be able to work within a workforce and a company where belonging is about bringing my whole self to work.”

Despite reports that suggest a number of past black employees faced racism and discrimination at Tesla, Mayo says people within their workforce belong to the mission of contributing to the future of the world; and Tesla takes training its workforce from the top down seriously.

“I’ve even volunteered to dress in my performance wear and have worked in the factory as well as in our delivery locations just to be able to experience and see what is really occurring,” says Mayo who enforces a zero tolerance policy for discrimination.

“Diversity and inclusion is the need to sit down and have those conversations and we’ve had those conversations internally,” she adds.

In addition to being a champion for change, she is invested in creating a pipeline for young people into the tech automotive industry. The Tesla START program gives students at community colleges 12 weeks of technical automotive hands-on experience and the opportunity to be hired by the company.

“It is a way to have a pipeline of individuals regardless of background, regardless of what you know, or your trade. We want to make sure we offer up opportunities to all different types of pipelines to be able to come here to Tesla,” says Mayo.

Mayo’s Advice: Remain Open to New Possibilities

Beyond her daily responsibilities, Mayo believes wellness in the workplace is just as important as belonging and says it starts with self. In fact, meditation is what keeps her firmly rooted.

“I have to be balanced to make just and fair decisions every day. It’s really meditation; being grounded with my friends; staying grounded with my team here; my family most importantly; and being able to share some of the unfiltered fun times with them, and really going hard in those areas that keeps me on my game.”

Mayo’s advice for others to stay on top of their game is to remain open to new possibilities.

“Never be so firm on the plans that you have for yourself. I would’ve never said ‘I’m going to be an executive leader in Silicon Valley.’ I didn’t even know to dream that big. So I just went with where my journey was taking me and it was uncomfortable sometimes. So I also learned to be okay with being uncomfortable because typically if you’re uncomfortable that means that you’re moving in the right direction.”

Donna Karan, Mashonda Tifrere’s Art Lead Her Team for ‘King Woman’ Exhibit at Urban Zen

Donna Karan has teamed with Mashonda Tifrere’s nonprofit Art Lead Her to put on an all-women exhibit called “King Woman” at Karan’s store and community space Urban Zen.
Pieces from Reisha Perlmutter, Delphine Diallo, Swoon and 12 other emerging and midcareer artists lined the walls of Urban Zen during a recent visit. Tifrere, dressed all in black just like Karan, pointed out one piece that especially moved her by Perlmutter. It’s a painting of a woman with vitiligo, her face peering above a pool of water in which her body’s submerged. Her hair is wet and slicked back.
“Reisha wanted to portray the woman in the portrait as strong and beautiful in her own skin,” Tifrere said. “On opening night, the woman came, and when she saw her picture hanging on the wall, she started bawling.”
There are individual stories like this one behind most of the pieces included in “King Woman”; Tifrere, who curated the showing, said it was imperative to forge relationships with the artists after selecting them to be part of the exhibition. She added she’d found all of them by looking around on Google and Instagram, then meeting them in person at art fairs.

The Black Conservative Woman In The Running to Lead Michigan’s Republican Party

Later this month, the Michigan Republican party delegation will select a new chair. The high-profile seat is sought after by a black conservative Gina Barr. The position is currently held by Ron Weiser who is not running for re-election.

Barr has a successful track record with the Michigan GOP. She was hired by the Michigan GOP in 2014, and successfully led its field office in Detroit. Her innate ability to connect with diverse communities led to the implementation of a robust grassroots operation.

Barr’s leadership and tenacious field operations yielded material results for Rick Snyder to win a second term as governor by bolstering his performance in Detroit. Barr helped Snyder win 6.82% of the vote in the deep blue Democratic territory. This was not an easy task given the demographics of Detroit is not inclined to vote Republican. Detroit is comprised of 78.8% black, 9.9% white, and 7.6% Hispanic.

She continued to provide tangible results during the last presidential election. As the Regional Field Director in 2016, Barr’s outreach and engagement strategy resulted in Wayne County producing more than 15,000 votes for President Trump than Mitt Romney received in 2012.

The marginal increase in Wayne County votes proved itself to make a difference in the hotly contested 2016 presidential race in the swing state of Michigan. President Trump narrowly won Michigan’s 16 electoral votes by edging Hillary Clinton 47.6% to 47.3%, and only 11,812 votes separated the two based on the final vote tally.

Coming off the 2016 presidential election, Barr took her leadership and party-building talents to the Republican National Committee (RNC). In 2017, she was hired by the RNC to be the head of urban engagement. In 2018, she was also promoted to be head of women engagement and successfully led both initiatives.

Although Barr is highly qualified to run, winning the highest seat in the Michigan Republican party will not be easy. Her opponent is Laura Cox,  a two-term state representative in the 19th district of Michigan. Cox is part of a political family and the wife of former Michigan Attorney General, Mike Cox.

So, what is Barr’s path to victory? Each candidate has tirelessly courted Michigan GOP delegates ahead of the party’s state convention on February 23rd in Lansing, Michigan. Approximately 2,119 delegates will vote to elect the next chair and vice-chair. Barr is not conceding an inch, and she is actively campaigning to secure enough votes to win.

As demographics gradually change in many states and local municipalities across America, the GOP can no longer rely on traditionally red territories to stay the same way. Rather, the Republican party must grow organically by building relationships, promulgating inclusive policies, and crafting a compelling message that appeals to urban voters.

New research finds that cannabis use among teens doesn’t appear to lead to greater conduct problems or greater affiliation with other teens who smoke cannabis. Instead, it’s adolescents with conduct problems or whose friends use cannabis who are more likely to gravitate toward cannabis use.

Russell Westbrook’s 3-point woes lead to late-night shooting drills

OKLAHOMA CITY — After going 1-of-12 from 3 in a 105-98 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook returned to the court still in his full uniform after the game for a shooting session some two hours after the final buzzer. Westbrook spoke with reporters after shooting on the court with a couple of team staffers rebounding for him, still in uniform and with a full sweat worked up. Though he wasn’t interested in explaining the motivation in getting extra shots up. "I’d rather not talk about it, honestly. I do it a lot, but …" Westbrook said, stopping there. It’s not entirely unusual for Westbrook to shoot after games, but typically it’s not back on the arena floor. He did it once before in Phoenix during the 2016-17 season following a rough game, but he’s been known to return to the Thunder’s practice facility sometimes for late-night postgame shooting. Generation Z Is Powerful as Hell, and Sabrina Spellman Is Here to Lead Them

WARNING: This articles contains spoilers for the first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Proceed at your own risk, witches.

Greendale is a town that’s been lost in time. It’s late September at Baxter High School and walking the halls feels like drifting through a montage of different decades: Posters about the upcoming school dance cover the walls, loose pieces of homework float around with Tumblr domains scrawled in cursive, and ghost-like black and white portraits hang in the school library. Teenagers amble around, dressed like Grease extras in tailored button-downs and a-line dresses, their lips rouged and their shoes shined.

Jaz Sinclair as Rosalind Walker and Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman.

If Greendale — the idyllic small town where Netflix’s new series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, takes place — feels like someone handpicked the best parts of the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, and then meticulously pieced them all together, that’s exactly what it should feel like. Chilling Adventures is supposed to make you feel nostalgic — even if you’re not quite sure for what.

“We’re trying to pride ourselves very much on being timeless,” production designer Lisa Soper said during a September visit to the show’s set in Vancouver. “You see cell phones [but also] Victorian dresses.” Soper described the show’s aesthetic as “a layering of history” that gives every viewer “a chance to grab onto something they’re nostalgic for.” But for all the nostalgia Millennials and Gen Xers might feel watching the genre-bending show — it’s part teen drama, part horror — Sabrina Spellman and her magical crew clearly belong to a new wave of young viewers: Generation Z.

Generation Z Questions Everything

Poised between girlhood and adulthood, half-witch and half-mortal Sabrina Spellman (played by Kiernan Shipka) is refreshingly unwilling to compromise. No, she will not sign her namesake away to the Devil in exchange for immense magical powers on her 16th birthday — but she also won’t forfeit those powers entirely. Sabrina refuses to conform to any easy definition, despite immense pressure from the female adults she loves and trusts — her two witch aunts, Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto), and her deceptive mentor Miss Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) — and the male authority figures she refuses to follow — High Priest of the Church of Night and headmaster of her magical school, Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle), and the head of her mortal school, Principal Hawthorne (Bronson Pinchot).

During the 10-episode first season of Chilling Adventures, Sabrina often marches around the sprawling, cozy-creepy Spellman home that doubles as a mortuary, announcing that there’s some kind of supernatural problem plaguing Greendale. On one such occasion, Zelda croaks back, “Mephistopheles, save us from the melodramatics of a teenage witch.” She’s not wrong: Sabrina’s conviction, stubbornness, and flair for the dramatic are emblematic of most teenagers wielding the confidence of youth. But Sabrina’s also grounded, logical, and uncommonly objective — and those qualities are especially emblematic of Generation Z.

The Weird Sisters: Adeline Rudolph as Agatha, Abigal Cowen as Dorcas, and Tati Gabrielle as Prudence.

“It’s so important, it’s so important, to ask questions all the time,” Shipka, who’s 18 years old and a member of Gen Z herself, said during the set visit. “I think that it’s really cool to see a character that is truly questioning these beliefs, and especially for younger people to see that.” Though she wouldn’t call her on-screen persona a role model, Shipka does want her peers to absorb Sabrina’s overall message. “I’m very excited that some 13-year-old girls are going to be watching this show and have [Sabrina] as a character to think about, or [to] be for Halloween. She’s a really strong, smart, educated girl and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of a show that has very clear intentions [on] that front.”

You Can’t Scare These Kids With Fake Blood

Like every generation that was once the youngest, Generation Z is a fascinating mystery to everyone who’s older than them. We know all too well that Millennials ruin everything and Gen Xers only care about themselves, but what about Gen Z? Do they really eat Tide Pods? What’s the deal with Zendaya and Mechee? Why don’t they understand the subtle art of burning CDs?

Cultural questions aside, the cut-off for Millennial birthdays is 1997, making the oldest members of Generation Z around age 21. By 2020, they’ll comprise 2.56 billion members of the population and 40% of all consumers. They have the potential to become major players in the upcoming 2018 midterm elections, as well as the 2020 elections. In short, they’re immensely powerful. But, like Sabrina, they’re still learning how they want to use that power; they’re not sure if they want to summon Hellfire just yet.

Miranda Otto as Zelda Spellman.

Chilling Adventures is a sister show to the CW’s Riverdale. Greendale is just a boat ride across Sweetwater River away from Riverdale. and they share a creator in Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. With both shows, Aguirre-Sacasa is pushing the envelope with teen content — characters in Riverdale use sex as an emotional coping mechanism (back in 2001, it took Pacey and Joey four seasons to do the deed on Dawson’s Creek), while Chilling Adventures is more horror show than teen drama, full of blood magic and devilry and heart-eating (we had to wait three seasons for Angel to finally suck on Buffy’s neck in 1999, and even then we only saw tiny trickles of blood). But TV alone can’t push a generation to maturity. Aguirre-Sacasa is simply answering the new demands of a generation forced to grow up too fast.

In Chilling Adventures, the adults are just as flawed and complex as the teens — they’re too busy murdering (and resurrecting) each other, engaging in religious BDSM, and stealing babies to keep tabs on the teens. More often than not, Sabrina and her friends help themselves. When no one will punish the Baxter High jocks for bullying, Sabrina and the three Weird Sisters (Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, and Abigail Cowen) cast a spell to blackmail them with incriminating photos; when Principal Hawthorne bans books, Sabrina and her best friend Rosalind Walker (Jaz Sinclair) form WICCA (Women’s Intersectional Creative and Cultural Association). Gen Z has shown similarly fierce independence.

Reared on screens and nursery rhymes about how to survive when someone walks into your school with a gun, this new generation doesn’t just hang out on MySpace and tweak the emo lyrics in their AIM away messages. They’ve used social media to educate themselves on issues and hold political leaders accountable. They’ve called out authority figures that people twice (and thrice) their age fear. They’ve spearheaded national protests.

Michelle Gomez as Miss Wardwell.

And we shouldn’t be surprised. Gen Z grew up surrounded by books and major movie franchises about looming dystopia and teens leading political revolution; even John Green’s wildly popular non-dystopian young adult fare centers around teen death (The Fault in Our Stars, Looking for Alaska) and abandonment (Paper Towns). Much like Sabrina gleefully watching a zombie movie while everyone around her shields their eyes from the horror, it’s really hard to scare these kids. They’ve been unblinkingly watching the horror play out on every available platform their whole lives.

The New Generation Won’t Let Anyone Define Them

Older members of the Chilling Adventures cast agree that their younger castmates are different than they were at a similar age. Gomez said that Shipka has taught her “how to behave professionally.” She laughed, “At 18, I was dumb as hell. And they’re really together, these kids.” Davis echoed the sentiment, saying, “I was never that at 16; I was never that brave [or] outspoken, and Kiernan [Shipka] is that. She shows a very different generation nowadays. When I am around the young ones on the show, they teach me so much. I love being around them, their energy and their light that they bring with them; it’s wonderful to bask in.”

The new generation is also ushering in social change. Chilling Adventures includes storylines about intersectional feminism, toxic masculinity, workplace harassment, living with a disability, and, most centrally, gender identity. Sabrina’s warlock cousin Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) identifies as pansexual and is attracted to both men and women in the show, and her best friend Susie Putnam (Lachlan Watson) spends the season beginning what Watson describes as a “queer journey.”

“These new narratives [aren’t] necessarily spoken of or given light,” 22-year-oldPerdomo said about the show’s gender representation. “It’s kind of about time. We’ve seen the heroic white male story perpetuated throughout Hollywood since time immemorial. So now to have a pansexual person of color played with depth and as a multi-faceted individual is not only artistically satisfying, it’s gratifying to be able to showcase that. [Ambrose is] a human being that’s more representative of the world we live in.”

That representation is both a refreshing step toward more inclusive gender representation on TV and a logical narrative to include for the show’s key demographic: Studies show that 38% of Gen Zers don’t believe that gender defines a person, and 56% of 13-20 year-olds know someone who uses gender neutral pronouns.

Lachlan Watson as Susie Putnam.

Watson, clear-eyed and eloquent, has been through a queer journey similar to Susie’s and prefers male pronouns — and talking about gender is his favorite thing to do. “There were a lot of points in my life where I thought I knew who I was, but I didn’t,” the 17-year-old explained. “I knew who I thought I was supposed to be; I knew how I thought I was supposed to identify and how I was supposed to act and how I was supposed to dress. I was who I was for other people, and that’s never gonna be fulfilling.”

That refusal to meet past cultural expectations is a common theme among the young cast members. Tati Gabrielle — who’s 22 years old and plays Prudence, Sabrina’s frenemy and leader of the Weird Sisters — said, “I think [the show] can appeal to my generation in terms of figuring out who you are and going to the limits.” She also hopes Chilling Adventures can teach her generation, especially young women, “to believe in something and to stand strong by your beliefs. We can take a stand despite the pressures the world puts on us; we can, at any point, step out of that and defy the laws of social interaction, or defy the place we’re supposed to fit into.”

Gen Z is Growing Up and Growing More Powerful

If the first season of Chilling Adventures is a story about a young girl embracing her power and crossing the threshold into adulthood, the (unconfirmed but inevitable) second season will be about how she decides to use it. In the season finale, Miss Wardwell pushes her young pupil to embrace her prospective greatness: “Own your power. Don’t accept it from the Dark Lord. Take it, wield it.”

In person, Gomez takes a more measured approach about the moment when Sabrina finally signs her name away to Satan and receives her dark magic (and witchy platinum blonde hair). “It’s a girl in the last moments of her childhood as she becomes an adult,” Gomez said, “and what happens to all of us in those last moments when you cross that threshold into young adulthood — and the responsibilities that come with being that.”

It’s too perfect a parallel, too broad a sweep to say that Sabrina’s singular potential to power change mirrors that of an entire generation. But when the real-life equivalent of the Greendale Thirteen — ghosts of old political grudges, dangerous relics of times passed, specters of an outdated belief system — threaten the people they love and the values they hold, you can bet that Generation Z will follow Sabrina across the threshold and sign away their childhood comforts in exchange for power. That day is coming, and you can expect Hellfire.
