Language Barriers Lead ICE to Rip Children From Their Indigenous Parents

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

When he was arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border in early June, 24-year-old Mario Perez-Domingo was hoping to save himself and his young daughter from rampant persecution against indigenous communities in his native Guatemala.

But Mario was nearly permanently separated from his 2-year-old child, the kind of terror he couldn’t imagine even in his home country, simply because no one could understand his plight.

When he was apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection near McAllen, Texas, Mario was almost immediately separated from his daughter by the arresting agent, despite the birth certificate stating their kinship and his desperate pleas that she was his child.

How a Reliable Lead Source Can Reduce Your Cost Per Action

Cost per action marketing may be a smart way to capture leads from online ads, but it’s a much stronger strategy when you have robust lead verification and closing processes working in your favor. Unfortunately, building internal teams to oversee these kinds of tasks may be burdensome, time-intensive, and expensive. However, a reliable lead source can defray some of these costs. Here’s how a regular lead generation source may be pivotal to your company’s CPA strategy.

balance-business-calculator-163032

Lead Generation Sources Offer Verified Leads

Sure, with CPA marketing, you’ll experience a lot less lead fraud than you would with pay-per-click advertisements. But the leads you do get still won’t be verified by human agents. It’s difficult to know why a lead decides to fill out a form—or how close they are to purchasing—until you actually speak to this potential customer directly and learn the details of their situation.

Online advertising may offer lower overhead than other marketing channels, at least on the surface. However, there are some hidden costs behind those initial fees that typically are not calculated into their expense. Leads acquired from CPA campaigns must be contacted, verified and scored for their likelihood to convert. And in the home remodeling or construction business, where customers are making high-dollar investments, they must often be wooed with several touches from your marketing team. All of this factors into your eventual cost of acquisition.

If you are willing to invest the time and money to score and nurture leads internally, CPA campaigns may be an ideal source of potential leads. However, this method is not cost-effective for every business. From the context of your economies of scale, it doesn’t make sense to train teams of marketers to nurture leads when you could essentially outsource this work to trained professionals.

CPA Lead Generation Is Only As Strong as Your Landing Page

One of the major obstacles to a successful CPA marketing campaign is that it relies on the strength of your landing page and form. Lead generation form building is essentially an art form—it takes a great deal of attention to detail and testing, along with a dash of intuitive UI design, to get it right.

Forms can be lengthy, especially if you offer several different services, such as a kitchen and bath remodeler might. The simpler a lead gen form is, the more successful it is likely to be with visitors, particularly for mobile users. Mobile input is also subject to errors and typos, which makes the process much more cumbersome for a key segment of users. Considering that mobile now holds over 50% of the market share for internet users (vs. about 44% for desktop), losing out on that market could be devastating.

Here again, a steady supply of reliable leads can bolster conversion rates when CPA forms fail. Obviously, if you are engaged in CPA campaigns, you should work towards refining landing pages and forms to capture more leads on a diverse range of browser platforms. However, lead generation professionals, who have years of experience refining landing pages for increased conversion, can help fill in the gaps here.

analysis-business-businesswoman-955447

Time Is Money When It Comes to Lead Conversion

We probably don’t have to tell you that leads have a short shelf life. The average lead is much more likely to convert if they receive an instant response. In fact, connecting with a lead within an hour after initial contact makes that lead seven times more likely to convert.

Lead conversion also takes finesse. Leads may need to be contacted several times throughout the sales process in order to close a sale. Ideally, your team should have access to a thorough CRM database and automation tools that can set up alerts every time a lead takes a potential action, such as revisiting your website. This level of detail can ensure that you aren’t contacting leads without context—a jarring experience for any client.

This again calls for robust and potentially expensive marketing and sales teams, which is why many businesses choose to outsource lead management actions like these.

Can You Trust Lead Generation Services?

In theory, the lead generation model follows a sound business logic. In practice, many lead outsourcing services have proved themselves otherwise, delivering cold, dead leads or sending the same leads to multiple businesses, hence flooding the market.

However, these kinds of shoddy services can be avoided by doing a little bit of research. Obviously, you should always review the company’s reputation and weigh their cost-per-lead before deciding to engage a lead service provider. You’ll also want to clarify as to how many different companies various leads are sent, since this can certainly impact the success of your campaigns.

Another thing to consider is the lead source’s area of expertise. For instance, at Modernize, while we do provide leads for all sorts of remodeling trades and industries, our focus has typically been in the solar, roofing, windows and HVAC segments. Therefore, we’re intimately familiar with the customer sales process for these types of projects and can help clients that contact us as they work through their decision. And that may result in significant cost savings overall. In other words, not all lead generation services are created equally.

Coinbase Poaches AWS Exec to Lead Engineering

Cryptocurrency giant Coinbase announced on Monday it has hired Tim Wagner, a veteran of Amazon Web Services, to be its vice president of engineering.

In a blog post announcing the hire, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong described engineering as core to its strategy of building cryptocurrency products, and said Wagner would be leading and expanding its team of engineers.

“[W]e are more focused than ever on meeting the increasing needs of individuals, institutions and businesses while continually advancing the frontiers of cryptocurrency. At the same time, we’re creating the infrastructure that will allow us to add more assets to our platform and accelerate the adoption of crypto around the world,” Armstrong wrote in the blog post.

Wagner’s hiring is significant in part because he played a key role in building AWS Lambda, a server-less computing platform with a strong reputation for security. He has also worked on app and API services for Amazon. Prior to Amazon, Wagner worked at Microsoft.

The news also represents the latest in a series of high-profile hires by Coinbase in the last six months. Others include Emilie Choi, head of business development who previously led M&A at LinkedIn, and Twitter operations veteran Tina Bhatnagar, who was hired to smooth out customer relations at Coinbase.

The hirings come at a time when a growing number of large firms, including Goldman Sachs and Intercontinental Exchange, are making plans to offer cryptocurrency products and services. Their entry would bring further competition to a market served by established crypto companies like Coinbase and Circle, and by more recent entrants like Robinhood and Square.

How Black Women Can Show We’re Ready to Lead

Black women can achieve power in corporate America, if we get real about the barriers we’re facing, if we’re united in our quest to overcome them, and if we’re willing to engage advocates and allies to help us get there.

That was the message at a special session during this year’s Women of Power Summit for the 40 Bank of America employees in attendance.

“We did this entire research project on what’s keeping black women from advancing to the C-suite. And we wanted to take this research on the road,” says Calandra Jarrell, senior vice president of Global Diversity and Inclusion, who moderated the candid conversation “Black Women: Ready to Lead—Speaking Truth to Power.”

“We’re exploring black women’s pursuit of powerful jobs and what’s getting in the way—unique challenges that affect brown girls. And having real-talk dialogue about what it feels like to be black in corporate America and a woman at that,” Jarrell says.

That research, Black Women: Ready to Lead, was conducted by the Center for Talent Innovation and co-sponsored by Bank of America. It showed that black women are 2.8 times more likely than white women to aspire to a powerful position with a prestigious title.

But despite the intention, and the fact that almost half of black women (43%) are confident they can succeed in a position of power, the numbers of black women in top positions in corporate America just aren’t adding up.

“We’re not broken; it’s not about performance,” Jarrell says. “It’s about how do we gain the necessary exposure—the same things our counterparts already have. And how do we brainstorm what our company and other leaders can do to really empower us and give us an equal chance.”

The panel featured Tiffany Eubanks-Saunders, senior vice president and market sales executive for U.S. Trust; Michelle Avan, director, Supervision Executive Wealth Management for Merrill Lynch; Ebony Thomas, senior vice president of global employment branding and enterprise diversity recruiting executive; along with the company’s highest-ranking black woman, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Cynthia Bowman.

black women in corporate america

The Black Women: Ready to Lead session at the 2018 Women of Power Summit

“As black women in corporate America, we experience it day in and day out that we have to work twice as hard to get half as much. If you think of all of the ethnicities and the genders, black women are literally the last in everything. We have to get real creative about how we can change the dynamic,” Eubanks-Saunders said at the event.

Other nuggets of wisdom were dropped during the conversation about how we can make sure all black women succeed:

Be honest about what more you could be doing. “If we’re gonna be real, real, real with each other, no we don’t always encourage each other. We need to be kind to each other, love up on each other, and say ‘I see you,’” Avan said. “We have an obligation to give to one another support and understanding and to put it forward to model for young women.”

Have the courage to ask for help. “Black girl magic is a gift and a curse. The whole notion of magic is that it’s supernatural—you see it but you don’t believe it. But that magic hurts us. It means we can’t be vulnerable. We can’t ask for help,” Thomas said. “We might have to expose ourselves if we want those allies to be a part of our journey.”

Take care of each other along the way. Sharing what we know, even when it comes to sensitive topics, it’s the only way we’re going to overcome disparities, like the pay gap. “If you have information, don’t just hold it to yourself. If you know it, I want to hear it. School me,” Avan said.

Speak up, even when you’re not the one affected. “We all have a role. We all have the power within us to make a difference. Even if it’s small, collectively we have a broader impact. If you’re silent on an issue, you’re condoning it,” Bowman said.

The session was part of a series of discussions dubbed “Courageous Conversations,” which have been organized by employee networks at the company since 2015 to bring employees together, create awareness of their different experiences, and encourage open dialogue.

More than 60,000 employees have participated in a Courageous Conversation to date, on topics such as social justice and the role of the majority in diversity.

It’s just one of the initiatives Bank of America, where more than 40% of the U.S. workforce is racially or ethnically diverse, has in place to help develop and support black employees.

The Black Professional Group, one of the company’s oldest employee networks with more than 10,000 members, is bolstered by the Black Executive Leadership Council, which works to advance talent and increase representation, and the Diverse Leaders Sponsorship program, which engages senior leaders to promote the visibility of diverse protégés.

Such openness and connection are essential to disrupting the forces that prevent true inclusion. Said Bowman: “If you don’t address the real heart of the issues and have a dialogue around the brutal facts, it’s hard to make progress.”

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Director on the ‘Shocking’ Backlash to Marvel’s First Female Superhero Lead

Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast

When Peyton Reed inherited the mantle of Ant-Man director from Edgar Wright, who left midway through the Marvel caper he’d scripted about a hero who shrinks to fantastical bug-sized proportions, the idea of the Quantum Realm had not yet touched paper. It was Reed and co-writer Adam McKay who thought to create for the screen a version of the alternate dimension where human concepts of space and time become irrelevant, opening a Pandora’s Box of reality-bending possibilities.

Now, three years and one cataclysmic shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe later, their idea may hold the key to reversing the cruelest events of Avengers: Infinity War—or so heartbroken fans might hope.

Ant-Man and the Wasp, Reed’s sunny sequel to his 2015 superhero-origin-heist-story starring Paul Rudd, comes on the heels of the darkest entry in the Marvel canon yet. Thanos, that purple menace now armed with all-powerful abilities, has decimated the Avengers and pulverized half the universe, including marquee heroes like Spider-Man, Black Panther, and the Guardians of the Galaxy (minus poor Rocket).

How A Podcast Came To Lead the Mutant Resistance

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

It seems like the most straightforward and subversive metaphor in superhero comics. A quirk of genetics leads a subsection of humanity to develop superpowers. Those without powers, accustomed to viewing the world as their birthright, hate and fear these mutants – and, more urgently, dehumanize, persecute, and oppress them. The story of this conflict is presented from the perspective of the marginalized. Welcome to the X-Men.

Yet nothing about mutantkind is straightforward. Across 55 years of serialized storytelling, the adventures of the X-Men have twisted time, space and reality into intimidating and often impenetrable mazes.

For example: the X-Men’s general, Scott “Cyclops” Summers, has a son who’s decades older than he is. As a baby, Nathan Summers contracted an illness that required raising him in a distant, dystopian future amongst a cult led by Scott’s daughter from a different alternative future. Nathan returned to the present day as a senior citizen, leading a violent X-faction before raising an adoptive daughter on the run across several alternative futures. (You can see Josh Brolin playing Nathan Summers, better known as Cable, in Deadpool 2.) Currently, the Cable-Cyclops age disparity is wider than ever, since the teenage Cyclops from the earliest X-Men comics has been time-displaced to the present day, while his adult counterpart is dead.

5 Anime Side Characters Who Deserve to Take the Lead

Viewers can usually spot the main character in an anime. Often, they visually stand out from the other characters or their backstory or introduction gives it away. Unsurprisingly, these characters’ stories take center stage. After all, they’re the stars.

But it’s the supporting cast members who help them achieve their goals by providing guidance, friendship, or comic relief. When done well, these characters’ personalities and backstories can actually steal the spotlight from the lead, leaving fans begging for more. So, here are a five anime side characters who deserve to take the lead.

Kakashi Hatake — Naruto

anime side characters who deserve to take the lead Kakashi Hatake from Naruto

Despite the series literally being named after the main character, Naruto Uzumaki, the show still has many secondary characters that could take the lead, such as Kakashi Hatake, a shinobi from the Konohagakure’s Hatake clan. Hatake has an interesting backstory full of pain, anguish, and growth that’s worth further exploration. He loses his mother as a child, and subsequently his father, Sakumo Hatake, a ninja renowned for saving the Hidden Leaf Village on more than one occasion.

His father’s death, in particular, adversely affects the young ninja, as he watched his father fall from grace within the village after choosing to save his comrades over completing a mission. The disgraced ninja fell into a depression, which led to his untimely death and Kakashi’s obsession with completing missions — even at the cost of his comrades. Yet, despite his troubled past, Kakashi doesn’t become evil like so many other Naruto characters. In time, he even comes to understand his father’s decision when faced with a similar choice.

Consequently, Hatake’s becomes more confident and self-reliant, which helps him to acquire the skills necessary to become a mentor to the village’s young ninjas. Despite his reputation and solid ninja skills, Hatake has shown no signs of arrogance. His modesty, tragic backstory, and ninja abilities make him the perfect choice to take the lead. It also doesn’t hurt that Naruto creator, Masashi Kishimoto, agrees. Kishimoto said in an interview that if he were to create a Naruto series with a different lead, Hatake would be his first pick.

Levi Ackerman — Attack on Titan

anime side characters who deserve to take the lead Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan

Levi Ackerman (or Captain Levi to his comrades in arms) is the squad captain of the Special Operations Squad within the Scout Regiment. As such, many refer to him as humanity’s strongest soldier. But the decorated soldier’s past is filled with pain and loss. Not only did he lose his mother and friends, he also lost his entire squad. Despite this, he has never drifted away from his duties or lost his composure. His emotions stay hidden until he completes his mission. It’s a commendable quality that few characters in Attack on Titan possess, including the series’ main character, Eren Jaeger.

His skills on the battlefield, eccentric behavior (don’t stop by when he’s on a cleaning rampage), and cold charm draws viewers in. (Besides that, the squad captain has distinguishing features, such as the red cravat, that distinguishes him from the rest of the cast.) Despite his unapproachable and cold demeanor, Levi’s dexterity and suave personality make him more likable and deserving of the spotlight than Eren Jaeger, who spends most of his time on screen yelling and putting his comrades in unnecessary danger.

Roy Mustang — Fullmetal Alchemist

anime side characters who deserve to take the lead Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist

Roy Mustang, also known as the Flame Alchemist, is one of the leads of the Fullmetal Alchemist (FMA)series. Even so, he can carry the show all by himself. Earning many accolades during his time in the Ishval Civil War and as a state alchemist, Mustang is a remarkable and capable commander capable of becoming the next Führer of Amestris and the main protagonist.

Although on the surface Mustang seems selfish and narcissistic, his heart is in the right place. It’s thanks to his self-absorbed façade that he can push his subordinates further than they expected. But besides his power and intelligence, he has a sensitive side that comes to light when he learns of his dear friend’s, Maes Hughes, death. A loss that affects him greatly and speeds up his plans of becoming Führer.

Not to mention, Roy Mustang is an attractive, sophisticated, powerful man in the prime of his life. With his dark, piercing eyes and baby face, the Flame Alchemist deserves to take the lead of the FMA franchise. His time during the war as a “hero of a massacre” and idealistic plans for Amestris make for a compelling story.

Shoto Todoroki — My Hero Academia

anime side characters who deserve to take the lead Shoto Todoroki from My Hero Academia

Even with a cast full of bizarre superheroes, Shoto Todoroki is still one of the most unique characters on My Hero Academia. Despite not having many scenes in the first couple of episodes, his rivalry with Izuku Midoriya and unfriendly personality make him one of the most popular characters in the series, according to Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump. He even beat out the main leads, Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo.

Todoroki is the son of the second strongest hero, Endeavor. His father’s obsession with All Might has led Endeavor to create offspring to surpass the world’s number one hero. His fixation with All Might took priority over his family, causing Todoroki to develop an aloof personality. Even so, Todoroki is still able to grow from it. He develops his own fighting style and ethics on heroism that put his father to shame.

Todoroki’s ability to overcome his issues makes him an incredibly sympathetic and likable character. Midoriya even mentions that Todoroki has all of the makings of a protagonist — unlike himself. Maybe there’s a spinoff series in the young hero’s future.

Kiyomasa Senji — Deadman Wonderland

anime-side-characters-deserve-take-lead_kiyomasa_senji_deadman_wonderland

Also known as Crow, Kiyomasa Senji was a police officer before landing in Deadman Wonderland. It’s thanks to Senji that the main character Ganta Igarashi lasted as long as he did in the amusement park prison. With Senji’s training and support, Ganta was able to use his Branch of Sin, making it possible for him to win and survive until the end.

Besides that, the battle-hardened veteran’s thirst for violence and cool catchphrase, “Dead Center” make him a suitable candidate to take the series’ lead role. Back during his police officer days, Senji used his ability to catch criminals, often crossing the line to capture his target. This made him a target to gangs, and, in the end, Senji lost colleagues, friends, and even his mentor, Domon. But Senji grows from these horrible experiences, becoming stronger and more determined.

But Senji isn’t just a serious badass character. When faced with danger, he shows how charismatic he is by making jokes. He also takes the time to help those weaker than himself, which is commendable. These laudable qualities, which Ganta lacks, make him the ideal choice for a lead role. (Plus, his toned body, messy hair, and eye-patch just scream main character.) Making Senji the lead would likely bring the  Deadman Wonderland anime back to life.

Small Steps Lead to Big Change

After Rosario Santillan of Ontario, California suffered an accidental injury that made physical movement challenging, she began gaining weight. As her feelings of sadness and frustration increased, so did the numbers on the scale and her blood pressure. To make matters worse, her doctor diagnosed her with prediabetes.

Santillan wanted to take charge of her health. As her injury improved, she began taking free Zumba classes offered at the Dorothy A. Quesada Community Center. The center is one of five health hubs created in Ontario as part of a Kaiser Permanente initiative designed to make healthy choices more accessible to individuals and families in areas of need.

Rosario Santillan working outDoing regular workouts and connecting with others soon inspired Santillan to take advantage of the center’s free gym and nutrition classes. “I feel so much better – I’ve lost over 67 pounds,” said Santillan proudly after finishing a Zumba class she now teaches. “I have normal blood pressure without medication, wonderful new friends and I’m not prediabetic or depressed anymore.”

Santillan’s positive experience showed her firsthand how small steps can lead to big change, and how social support helps encourage success. The concept is one the city of Ontario knows well. In 2007, it launched Healthy Ontario – a long-term initiative that strives to make Ontario a model for healthy communities by improving physical, social, environmental and economic health and well-being – one action at a time.

To help support Ontario’s ongoing efforts, the city of Ontario and Kaiser Permanente Southern California began partnering in 2012 to engage residents and local organizations to create meaningful change through the Ontario HEAL Zone initiative. Neighborhood residents as well as representatives of the city and local school districts, community clinics, businesses and higher education collectively identified priorities to focus on together.

Kaiser Permanente’s Healthy Eating Active Living (or HEAL) initiative is one of the many ways Kaiser Permanente goes beyond traditional health care to help improve health outcomes for everyone in the areas Kaiser Permanente serves.

“Communities are vital settings that create the conditions of health, as well as feature the non-medical resources that promote wellbeing and prevent disease,” said Roberta Tinajero, manager, community benefit, Kaiser Permanente Southern California. “We know excellent medical care alone isn’t sufficient to create good health, and we must collaborate with others to develop health-promoting physical, social and economic environments.”

Children gardening.Ontario receives a major boost

Over the past six years, the city of Ontario, Kaiser Permanente, and other public, private and nonprofit, community-based organizations have worked diligently together to put $ 2 million in Kaiser Permanente HEAL grant funding to good use. From making street routes safer and offering free exercise classes and health education assistance through the health hubs, to improving parks and developing a national award-winning, 2.5-acre urban garden, the city continues to progress toward its Healthy Ontario goal.

In fact, the California Strategic Growth Council recently awarded the city a $ 35 million Transformative Climate Communities grant that targets the HEAL Zone. The funding will enhance public transportation, bike lanes and sidewalks, build affordable homes, promote energy efficiency, increase food security and provide new green spaces to improve residents’ health and quality of life.

“The changes in the HEAL Zone community are noticeable – the health hubs are bustling, the residents are more involved,” said Karen Thompson, associate planner, city of Ontario, who is also the city’s HEAL Zone lead. “We’ve built trust and deep relationships in the community. The funding from the state will allow us to take what we’ve done in the HEAL Zone and expand it.”

“The city laid the foundation for a Healthy Ontario, but Kaiser Permanente’s partnership certainly helped us get the $ 35 million grant,” said Ontario Mayor Paul Leon. “Kaiser Permanente didn’t just give Ontario a lot of money and walk away: They listened to us and engaged.”

Because of everyone’s good work to help create a healthier Ontario, residents like Santillan are reaping the benefits. Today, Santillan helps other community members through the HEAL Zone effort as a promotora, providing free basic health education to fellow Hispanic/Latino community members.

“Change takes time – it’s a shift in thinking,” said Santillan. “But the results are so worth it.”

Why Digital Marketing and Lead Generation is Essential for Contractors

In the past 100 years, advertising and marketing has rapidly changed. With the increasing influence of digital marketing, home improvement companies, such as HVAC, Solar, Roofing, and Windows companies can no longer rely on catchy radio jingles or a space in the Yellow Pages to get their services in front of new clients.

Homeowners are now searching online, jumping on social media, and relying on online reviews to find and research their potential home improvement experts. As a contractor, you have to understand how to connect your services to your targeted audience’s typical purchase cycle. You have to think about how your customers find you, where they’re researching your specific services, and what prompts them to choose your business versus your competitor. Check out our latest infographic below on why digital marketing and lead gen is essential for today’s home improvement professional.

Client Success Video: How Horizon Solar Power Learned to Love Lead Generation

What is your role with Horizon Solar Power?

“My name is Ruben Ugarte, and I’m the Business Development Director for Horizon Solar Power. We’re a residential Solar installer out of Southern California, but we’re serving states nationwide. We’re one of the largest installers in the United States of rooftop and commercial Solar. My goal is to bring quality lead gen to our sales team as well as other partnership opportunities to allow us to continue to grow and install more solar”

What is your goal in working with Modernize?

“In any relationship or partnership, it has to be a win/win for both organizations. I see that as the key to what we’ve done with Modernize as a whole and the relationship we’ve had with our Account Manager. The main goal is to find homeowners who want solar, who are interested in talking about it, who would like to have a proposal presented, and ultimately decide to go solar. I think another goal is being able to work with a company who you know is doing things the right way and delivering quality leads and homeowners who actually want to talk to you about solar – which is easier said than done in the lead business. Modernize has gone from being a small vendor where we do 3-5 sales to last month where we completed over 50 projects through Modernize. It’s amazing to have a relationship with one of the biggest home improvement lead generation companies in the nation and to be able to call them and have things happen – not even in a full day – but in a few hours, is empowering and something that makes me, as a business development director, proud to say that I have these types of relationships and I can make something happen when asked by my leadership team.”

How has your relationship with Modernize evolved?

“We originally used Modernize in 2014, and had a 3-month pilot that didn’t go very well. We were quite upset. We felt that, at the time, Modernize had sent us bad leads… That was our mindset. What’s funny is, after looking back six months down the road, we noticed that our COA (cost of acquisition) was in line and was actually pretty good! So, what do I do? I made a call to Modernize and we started the relationship back up about 6-8 months later, and the relationship has been going strong ever since. We’ve gone from testing small volume – a couple thousand dollars – to, now, purchasing leads nationwide in multiple states. We haven’t limited ourselves to just web leads; We’ve also purchased other kinds of traffic. The relationship has developed to a point where we come to Modernize first for a lot of priorities and opportunities we have on our side to grow.”

What is your advice for companies looking to grow through digital marketing?

“I think number one, working only with companies who are doing the right thing.Number two, working with companies who don’t look at the relationship on an insertion order basis but looking at it more as a long-term relationship. Thinking more like ‘where can we go from here? Where can we go the year after together?’ vs. ‘Send me the money for this order, I’ll send you 100 leads, and what happens, happens!’ I think a lot of times that’s the relationship that many construction companies have with their lead gen provider, and that’s not a bridge towards prosperity or future growth together. Finally, get to know your lead gen provider, come and visit them on-site, visit their call center. Understand who they are and what they want to be, and in turn, you can figure out fairly quickly if they are aligned with who you are and what you are trying to do.”

In one word, describe your relationship with Modernize.

“Robust. We’ve faced challenges as a team and as our organizations aligned. Certainly, we will continue to have challenges on our side, and on your side, and together. But, I think as partners, we understand each other’s goals and what we are trying to do for each other. Because we have that kind of communication and transparency, we work in good faith together, and I would say that our relationship is robust. It’s something that continues to grow, and I’m excited to work hand-in-hand with you guys. It’s been an amazing experience”

Findings of Newly Discovered Positions in an Eye Genome Could Lead to New Treatments for Glaucoma

Analysis of DNA from nearly 70,000 Kaiser Permanente diverse patients in Northern California uncovered 47 specific positions, or loci, in the genome that are associated with variations in pressure inside the eye. The findings, which could help clarify how elevated eye pressure leads to glaucoma, were published on Dec. 13, 2017, in Nature Communications.

Eric Jorgenson, PhD

Eric Jorgenson, PhD

“This is a much larger number of genetic predictors associated with intraocular pressure than ever reported before,” said senior study author Eric Jorgenson, PhD, research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research.

Previously there were just 11 independent hits, so this is a big step forward,” added Helene Choquet, staff scientist with the Division of Research and lead author of the study.

Helene Choquet, PhD

Helene Choquet, PhD

Eye pressure, or intraocular pressure, is primarily maintained by liquid that flows across the lens of the eye to keep it healthy. Insufficient drainage of this liquid increases the pressure, which can lead to glaucoma, a condition involving optic nerve damage and loss of peripheral vision. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide.

“Elevated intraocular pressure is the only known modifiable risk factor for glaucoma and is most often treated with pressure-lowering eye drops,” said study co-author and Kaiser Permanente ophthalmologist Ronald Melles, MD. “Knowing which genes are involved, and how, could suggest new avenues for development of novel treatments.”

The research team compared the DNA of 69,756 patients, as well as measurements of their intraocular pressure from routine eye exams. The researchers looked for single-nucleotide polymorphisms (or SNPs) — variations at specific points in the genome — that occurred significantly more often in people with higher eye pressure.

The analysis identified SNPs that were strongly associated with higher intraocular pressure at 47 loci in the genome, 40 of which had not been found in any previous study of this kind. Further analysis of data from almost 40,000 additional patients in a prior study confirmed the statistical strength of 30 of the newly identified loci.

Jorgenson attributes the surge in hits to the study’s rich dataset. All participants were members of the Genetic Epidemiology Research in Adult Health and Aging (or GERA) Cohort, a group of more than 100,000 adults who had all been Kaiser Permanente members for at least two years and volunteered to provide saliva or blood samples for genetic analysis. Use of GERA data also ensured that people with European, Latino, Asian and African ancestry were well-represented, in contrast with previous studies that involved populations of primarily European descent.

GERA is a subgroup of Kaiser Permanente patients in Northern California participating in the Research Program on Genes, Environment and Health, which investigates genetic and environmental effects on common diseases. The RPGEH cohort is part of the  Kaiser Permanente Research Bank, a population-based resource with more than 300,000 enrolled members who have consented to have their electronic medical record, biospecimens and survey data linked and analyzed to advance knowledge about health and disease.

Jorgenson and his research group are extending this work to determine the role of genetic risk factors for intraocular eye pressure in glaucoma susceptibility, supported by a grant from the National Eye Institute.

Internet provider warns users torrenting could lead to ‘thermostat issues’

ISP piracy letter

Normally, the worst thing that happens to anyone caught illegally downloading Game of Thrones is a strongly-worded letter in the mail, or a vague threat of some kind of future legal action. But one US internet service provider decided to take things a step further, and outline in specific detail how torrenting movies could lead to problems controlling your thermostat in the middle of winter.

Armstrong Zoom, an ISP with around a million customers in the north-east US, apparently sent out a letter to subscribers who they suspect have been pirating TV or movies. The letter mentions the usual threat of account suspension, but the ISP goes on to spell out in rather unusual detail exactly how that can prevent you from heating your home in the middle of winter.

Why ‘Three Billboards’ Director Will Write More Lead Roles for Women

Sometimes it can feel like we’re going backwards when it comes to the representation of women in cinema. Often seen through the male gaze as two-dimensional characters, the lack of fully rounded women characters on screen can be frustrating. And when you watch a film like Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, it’s a stark reminder of how important it is to see strong female leads like the film’s protagonist, Mildred, on the big screen.

Not only is the character extremely well written, but she’s brought to life by the remarkable talents of Frances McDormand. And while McDormand is definitely one of a kind, there are a bunch of über-talented women in the industry that rarely get the chance to flex their acting chops like this because of underwritten roles – or a lack of decent roles full stop.

McDonagh, who wrote and directed the acclaimed In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, spoke to FANDOM about why his experience on Three Billboards has inspired him to write more leads for women.

“I wanted to write a really strong female lead, and that was Frances McDormand — and it was written for her actually — as a really strong mother who goes to war with a bunch of cops who she feels aren’t doing enough to solve the crime of the murder of her daughter a year ago,” he says.

Three Billboards-Frances McDormand

Whether McDonagh is able to explain fully why he felt compelled to write the character of Mildred in the first place isn’t patently clear. Perhaps it is in response to the dearth of strong female leads out there, wittingly or unwittingly. He does reveal that it was a real-life incident 20 years ago that sparked her story. In the film, Mildred’s ‘war’ starts with a provocative message she splashes across three billboards positioned on the side of a road outside the small fictional Missouri town, Ebbing.

“The idea behind the billboards came to me… I saw something not dissimilar when I was on a bus journey through America about 20 years ago, and it just kind of flashed by in the corner of my eye, but it was something as angry and as painful as what we see on the billboards in the early scenes,” says McDonagh. “So it was putting those two together, deciding a mother did something like that, it allowed… that character just popped. When you think that someone could be as strong but in as much pain to do that, you’ve got her already. And you just add Frances’s voice to that, and it’s kind of a fun journey to follow her on.”

Writing Mildred Was ‘Outrageous and Joyful’

Frances McDormand stars, with Peter Dinklage in a supporting role.

Interestingly, conceiving and developing Mildred seemed to unlock a creative freedom within McDonagh that allowed him to write a character and film that are eliciting plenty of awards chatter.

So how did he approach writing his first female lead?

“No differently to writing a male lead really,” he begins. “My early plays did have quite strong women characters and I hadn’t really done that in the first two films I made. But weirdly, because she’s not just the female lead she’s such a strong and outrageous and provocative one, you find there’s a joy in writing her. Because you don’t know what she’s going to do from scene to scene. The audience doesn’t either, especially because you don’t, but … I think I’ll keep doing it because it’s outrageous and joyful.”

So there you are. We can all look forward to more characters like the funny, tough and unpredictable Mildred from the mind of Martin McDonagh. Let’s hope others follow suit.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri also stars Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Caleb Landry Jones, Peter Dinklage and Abbie Cornish. The film hits screens in the US on November 10 and in the UK on January 12. In the meantime, here’s the official synopsis for the darkly comic drama:

After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby, the town’s revered chief of police. When his second-in-command, Officer Dixon — an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence — gets involved, the battle is only exacerbated.

Gaudí opening to lead Barcelona’s tourism comeback

The first house designed by the iconic architect – exuberant Casa Vicens in the beleaguered city’s Gràcia district – opens to the public later this month. ‘This could be a moment of peace,’ says its manager

It’s not just would-be voters in the Catalan independence referendum who have taken a knock-back in Barcelona this year. The city’s image has also suffered from anti-tourism demonstrations and terrorist attacks, and the tourist industry is down some 15% since police violence and mass rallies grabbed international headlines in October. It’s down, but resolutely not out, however.

Brand Barcelona’s comeback begins with a contribution from its heaviest hitter: Antoni Gaudí. Almost a century after his death, the architect of La Sagrada Familia is still synonymous with the city. On 16 November, Gaudí’s first house, Casa Vicens, begun in 1883, will open permanently to the public for the first time.

The NYC attack shouldn’t lead to getting rid of the diversity lottery program

The NYC attack shouldn’t lead to getting rid of the diversity lottery program

The NYC attack shouldn’t lead to getting rid of the diversity lottery program

On Wednesday morning, President Trump tweeted that the New York City attacker arrived in the U.S. under the “diversity lottery program” and that his administration would seek to end it. But Trump is totally wrong about the diversity lottery program for a few reasons, the biggest one being that getting rid of the diversity lottery program wouldn’t have changed anything about the attack on Tuesday afternoon.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed late Wednesday that the New York City attacker entered the U.S. in 2010 with a passport and a valid diversity immigrant visa, according to the Washington Post. But NYPD and law enforcement said in previous statements that he was radicalized after coming to the U.S., so for that very simple reason, changing the immigration policy wouldn’t have worked in this particular case. Aside from that, the diversity lottery program allows many immigrants to come to the U.S. who otherwise wouldn’t be able to, and closing those doors might not be the best thing for the country.

Trump said in a press conference, also Wednesday, that the diversity visa lottery program is not “nice.” “It sounds nice. It’s not nice. It’s not good,” he (sort of) explained. But it’s not like someone over at DHS spins some Bingo machine and randomly gives away free tickets to immigrants. It’s a lot more complicated than that.

The program was started in 1990 as a way to help immigrants come to the U.S. from countries that normally don’t have a lot of immigrants coming our way.

Recipients of the program come from countries that have fewer than 50,000 immigrants in the U.S. already and come from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America (other than Mexico), Oceania and South America, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

It’s supposed to fill in the gap for people who can’t get visas through employment or family connections. According to CNN, one million green cards are issued by the U.S. per year and last year, 45,664 of them were diversity visa recipients.

To even apply for the visa, they have to have at least a high school education or equivalent and have had at least two years of work experience that required training within five years of the application date. They also have to have an in-person interview and be “admissible” to the U.S., which means they have to disclose past criminal behavior, including associations with terrorists. They take fingerprint scans and require a medical check up, too.

Again, no one’s scratching some magic DHS lotto ticket in a foreign country and getting a free ride to the U.S.

It’s called a lottery because the odds of getting one, given the number of applicants, are worse than the odds of getting into Harvard University, according to Vice.

Trump wants to get rid of this path to citizenship entirely and make immigration solely “merit based.” But the requirements for a diversity visa are already pretty high. Instead of scrapping the program, the State department could also look into revising how they screen people coming in, especially since the political environment has changed a lot since President George H.W. Bush signed it into law.

There might be better ways to screen people, but blocking immigrants from smaller countries from coming here just because they already don’t have a job lined up or family members living somewhere in New Jersey just seems backwards. Think of all the talent and interesting human beings we’d be missing out on.

That being said, the diversity visa lottery program hasn’t always been popular and there have been a handful of terrorist plots associated with the program, though only Tuesday’s was fatal. The others are associated with the program only because there were very tangential actors in the plot who had the visa. Given the number of diversity visas given out every year, that seems more like probability than the visa program actual being a cause of terrorism.

Although the diversity visa lottery program was passed with bipartisan support back in 1990, there was a move by Democrats to overhaul immigration legislation back in 2013. Funny enough, New York Senator Chuck Schumer was a member the group who came up with an immigration reform package that would have eradicated the diversity visa program in the name of a 13-year pathway to citizenship for all immigrants.

On Wednesday, Trump seemed to have forgotten that part of immigration history, calling the diversity visa lottery a “Schumer beauty.” (Isn’t it nice to live in a world where the president erroneously blames the senator of the state that just experienced a terrorist attack? But anyway…)

Back in 2013, Politico reported that the bipartisan immigration reform bill would “revamp every corner of U.S. immigration law, establishing a 13-year pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants, with several security benchmarks that have to be met before they can obtain a green card.” The reform bill would have also required a mandatory workplace verification system for employers and increase security on the borders.

Obama lauded the reform bill as a perfect example of compromise. The measure would not only increases security along the border, but requires a mandatory workplace verification system for employers, trying to ensure no jobs are given to immigrants who are not authorized to work in the United States. As with so many other pieces of bipartisan legislation during the Obama era, the bill died in Congress.

Immigration reform and national security are important, nuanced issues that should be dealt with by Congress. But we shouldn’t allow emotions to take over and implement policies such as Trump’s elusive “extreme vetting” program (what does that even mean?) because of one single instance. Given that the most recent terrorist attacks in the U.S. were perpetrated by people who were radicalized after they moved here. Getting rid of the diversity visa lottery doesn’t address that one, very important aspect of terror attacks that happen here.

Brie Larson doesn’t feel ‘pretty enough’ for lead roles

OHMYGOSSIP — Brie Larson “didn’t feel pretty enough” to take on lead roles when she started acting.
The 27-year-old actress – who was cast as Marvel comics superhero Captain Marvel and her alter ego Carol Danvers last year – has admitted she used to think she’d be a “supporting character” for her entire career, and “struggled” with the idea of being the star.
She said: “I just didn’t feel confident in myself, I didn’t feel pretty enough. I thought I’d be a supporting character my whole life and I was struggling with the idea of being the star.”
And the ‘Kong: Skull Island’ star says she’s now learning to “value” herself, after having previously been the victim of sexism on sets where she hasn’t felt “safe”.
She added: “I’ve been on sets where I didn’t feel safe, I’ve felt objectified. But as I’m getting older I’m realising that I can value myself, I’m allowed to.”
Brie’s fear of main roles almost saw her give up the chance to play Captain Marvel – who she will make her debut as in 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ – too, as she knows the role will make her “lose some of the things [she] loves most about life”, such as her privacy.
Speaking to Net-a-Porter’s The Edit magazine, she said: “I spent months thinking about whether or not I was going to do the film and I realised that it was a chance to tell a story on the largest scale possible. I know it is going to make me lose some of the things I love most about my life, but I think it’s worth it.”
