The U.S. Has Never Needed Paid Family and Medical Leave More

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) turned 26 this week, just as President Trump was preparing to talk paid leave during his State of the Union address.

The Family Medical Leave Act was an important first step. Now it’s time to pass the FAMILY Act. (MomsRising)

As the most female Congress in history gets to work, lawmakers have an urgent imperative to adopt comprehensive paid family and medical leave that allows all workers to care for their families without risking their jobs or financial security. No issue is more important to moms across the country.

Moms need paid leave to care for new babies, for sure, but also to care for a spouse or sibling who is battling heart disease or a parent struggling with dementia, or to recover from illness or injury.

Not just any paid leave program will do: The U.S. needs a comprehensive, meaningful paid leave program that covers all workers, addresses the range of caregiving needs families face, expands the definition of family, provides wage replacement sufficient to allow workers with low wages to take leave and ensures that the same or comparable jobs will be there when workers return from their leave.

We expect that, as with last year’s State of the Union, Trump’s lip service to paid leave will be followed with sparse details. In the past, his paid leave proposals have fallen far short of what working families need—providing only parental leave, doing nothing for workers who need leave to care for a sick family member or to recover from illness—and the benefits they would offer would not be meaningful, and would be especially inadequate for workers with lower incomes and wages. Their eligibility rules may even exclude the new parents who need leave the most.

That is not what the country needs.

Similarly, some Republican lawmakers have offered proposals that are deeply, even fatally, flawed—because they would reinforce stereotypes about women, require workers to trade future Social Security benefits for paid leave and/or provide inadequate job protections.

That would not be what our country needs.

Twenty-six years ago, the FMLA required certain employers to provide workers with 12 weeks of unpaid job-protected leave to welcome a new child, care for an ill family member or recover from a serious illness. It was a vitally important starting point, but it does not meet the needs of working families or our economy today.

We need the Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act to boost moms and families, strengthen our economy, improve our health and make our workplaces more equitable.

The FAMILY Act, which we expect will be introduced in both the House and Senate very soon, would create a social insurance fund with small contributions from employees and employers; provide all workers with a meaningful amount of leave to meet the full range of caregiving needs; and be affordable, cost-effective and sustainable for workers, employers and taxpayers.

We want to be clear: A paid leave program that provides only parental leave is a non-starter for the millions of MomsRising members across the country who see paid family and medical leave as top priority issue.

Congress must pass the FAMILY Act, and President Trump must sign it into law. It’s time for the U.S. to finally give moms, and all workers, access to paid family and medical leave.

Bebe Rexha to Married Football Player: ‘Leave Me the F—k Alone’

Bebe Rexha has no time for games. The “I’m a Mess” singer, 29, called out an unidentified football player for continuing to text her while he’s married with children.

“Do you ever have that one guy that always comes in and out of your life,” she wrote on Instagram Stories on Friday, December 28. “And they are cheaters and waste your time.”

The 2019 Best New Artist Grammy nominee then shared a text exchange that began with a question posed to her about when the man, who referred to her as his “friend,” would see her again.

Rexha was cordial but cool in her response, answering, “I’ll be performing on New Year’s Eve. On NBC. Happy New Years my friend.”

The texter indicated that he had meant to ask when he would see in her person, writing, “Omg. Or on tv lol. Not on TV,” to which she replied, “I’ll be performing in San Jose in January.”

She elaborated on her frustration further in a subsequent Story. “You’re married and have three kids,” she wrote. “Be a good role model and play your sports and leave me the f—k alone. Don’t be texting me ‘hey friend’ especially if you’re a married man. That s—t don’t fly with me. Go back to playing football. If only you guys knew,” along with the face-palm emoji.

The singer then polled her fans about whether or not it was appropriate for a married man to text single women and call them ‘hey friend.’

“I feel bad for writing that but it’s how I feel,” she concluded.

Rexha performed her hit single at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, on December 1.

Prediction: As shows continue to leave Netflix, some people will return to DVDs

Netflix DVDs

Next year is going to be pretty interesting for Netflix subscribers, to put it mildly. According to analytics firm Jumpshot, more than half of the streaming giant’s 50 most-popular shows are licensed from companies like NBCUniversal and WarnerMedia that are planning to start streaming services of their own.

That’s potentially bad news for Netflix users who are also fans of its top licensed shows like The Office and Grey’s Anatomy. Because since everyone from new streaming upstarts to industry stalwarts like Disney are planning to launch Netflix rivals in 2019, that means they might be inclined to yank their popular titles from Netflix. And if they don’t, they’ll no doubt charge Netflix a pretty penny to keep them there.

Marc Jacobs Will Try to Bring Back Grunge. But Did It Ever Leave?

Photo illustration by The Daily Beast/Photos Courtesy Marc Jacobs

It feels like every Forever 21 has stocked a faded black Nirvana smiley face T-shirt since the dawn of time. But it wasn’t too long ago that grunge—or capital-F fashion’s take on the style—was met with downright rage.

Take, for instance, Marc Jacobs’ “Grunge Collection” for Perry Ellis.

By 1993, grunge had infiltrated airwaves, but it had yet to fill department store aisles. True, Courtney Love had already trampled onto the scene in her combat boots and plaid collared dresses, and kids all over the country may have been digging into thrift store bargain bins for a used flannel to emulate their rock heroes. But the fashion world had turned its skinny shoulder to the movement.

Why hitting the lottery could leave you broke

How could you possibly go broke after winning hundreds of million of dollars? It’s a lot easier than you may think…

With Thursday’s Mega Millions jackpot sitting at around $ 900 million ($ 513 million if you take the lump sum), many people are wondering what life would be like with all that money.

How you could hit the Mega Millions jackpot and still end up broke

But really, what if money suddenly fell out of the sky and into your life? Maybe you win the lottery, or you get an injury settlement or maybe an inheritance. And while a $ 900 million jackpot is rare, there are all kinds of different situations in which you could be left with a lot more money than you’re used to.

When money shows up out of thin air, most of us have no clue how to handle it. And very often, it quickly burns a hole in our pocket.

Now the odds of winning big money have gotten even worse as lottery officials not long ago tweaked the Mega Millions and Powerball formulas so that customers have a greater chance to win smaller prizes instead of tens of millions of dollars, according to the Washington Post.

Be careful how you spend all that money!

Remember the so-called “Ocean’s 16” from Ocean County, New Jersey, who each won $ 3.8 million (after taxes) in an August 2013 PowerBall jackpot that grabbed everybody’s attention?

Well, that’s a huge amount of money. If it’s well-managed, it can provide comfort to you for the rest of your life. But therein lies the rub.

Read more: 19 ways to cut costs and save more each month

For most people who come into big money — like athletes or lottery winners — all of a sudden their wants instantly skyrocket. If those lottery winners back in 2013 gave into those wants, research shows they’ll blow through $ 3.8 million in just six years!

If you ever come into a large inheritance or sell a business and get a pile of money, restraint is key. I’ve long told people in this situation to blow 10% of it however you want. But the other 90% you treat as a nest egg to nurture.

History (and science) show money doesn’t equal happiness

Jack Whittaker, a millionaire from West Virginia, became a much bigger millionaire when he won a $ 315 million lottery in 2002. After four years, Whittaker was broke and had lost both his daughter and granddaughter to drug overdoses (which he blamed on the lottery winnings). In addition to all that, Whittaker was robbed of $ 545,000 in CASH, as he sat in the parking lot of a strip club. Whittaker said, in hindsight, “I wish we had torn the ticket up.”

According to NBC News, a 2008 University of California study that measured people’s happiness six months after winning a relatively modest lottery prize didn’t exactly produce the results you may have imagined. The study looked at those who won an amount equivalent to about eight months’ worth of income. The winners had taken the money in a lump sum. The study found that winning the money, “had zero detectable effect on happiness,” according to Peter Kuhn, one of the study’s authors.

Read more: Skip the lottery: Why you should be on yourself instead!

It’s easy to say, but so hard for people to do. As for me, if I won that kind of money, I would change nothing. I would still get up and come to work every day. I would just think about what charity I could give it to! But that’s just me.

A final word of advice for future lottery winners!

Never take the lump sum payout. You’re better off taking the payout over years as a method of forced budgeting. If you worry your heirs won’t get all the money you have coming to you, buy a term life insurance policy that would pay them for what you would not receive if you die prematurely.

Remember, most of us do better with basic allowances than a huge sum of money right then and there!

Meanwhile, you don’t have to win the lottery or get an inheritance to come into extra cash. See some free and easy ways to search for missing money in your name.

Paid period leave policy in Australia stirs world debate

A women’s advocacy group in Australia has been offering paid leave for menstrual pain to its employees in the past 18 months. Yet such leave has become a controversial topic worldwide, with some women in support of and some against “period leave” workplace policies.
