A little labeling goes a long way

New research reveals that infants can use even a few labeled examples to spark the acquisition of object categories. Those labeled examples lead infants to initiate the process of categorization, after which they can integrate all subsequent objects, labeled or unlabeled, into their evolving category representation.

Off the market! Janel Parrish married her longtime boyfriend, Chris Long, in Hawaii on Saturday, September 8.

“We feel so lucky we found each other in this crazy world,” the Pretty Little Liars alum, 29, tells Us Weekly exclusively in a statement. “Marrying my dream man in my home of Hawaii surrounded by family and friends was a dream.”

The bride looked stunning in a mermaid Inbal Dror gown with a sweetheart neckline, corset bodice and long, feathered train. The pair exchanged self-written vows during the ceremony. Parrish’s sister served as her maid of honor while Long’s brother officiated.

Glenn Nutley and Leslie Fair ensured Parrish and her bridesmaids had flawless hair and makeup. Vintage and Lace Weddings handled planning, coordination and design while 37 Frames Photography captured stunning portraits of the happy couple, who walked down the aisle to a song the actress penned for Long. Abby Co. Design Calligraphy and a local band called The Green also had a hand in the big day.

Pretty Little Liars cast and crew, including Brendan Robinson and Marlene King, were in attendance as well as the bride’s Bratz: The Movie costars Logan Browning and Natalia Ramos. Guests dined on fish, bacon smoked macaroni and cheese, fried rice, Hawaiian sherbet and buttercream cake.

Parrish opened up to Us about her relationship with Long in August. “He just is my person. My soul knows him, I feel like. He’s my best friend in the entire world. And no matter what, if I’m having the worst day ever, I feel like I have somebody who understands me. And even if he doesn’t quite understand me at that moment, he tries to,” she raved at the time. “And that feels so nice.”

She added that she was most looking forward to “making him my husband” and “putting a ring on his finger” when the couple tied the knot.

Parrish — who will next appear in Tiger this fall and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists in 2019 — paid tribute to the chemical engineer on August 29. “This guy right here is the epitome of strength, kindness and love no matter what the circumstance,” she gushed on Instagram. “I’m super lucky I found him and get to marry his ass.”

The To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before star celebrated a relationship milestone the week before the pair’s wedding. “Two years with you and I still can’t get enough,” she captioned an Instagram video of the duo on Monday, September 3. “Happy Anniversary, @c_long. Soon you’ll be my HUSBAND.”

Parrish counted down to her nuptials with a bachelorette party in San Diego last month. The actress and her friends hung out at Mission Bay Beach and dined at Lionfish Restaurant.

The Dancing With the Stars alum announced her engagement on Instagram in October 2017: “Went to the park for a stroll with Klee and came back with a fiancé. I get to marry my best friend and I’m over the moon. I love you @c_long.”

Aretha Franklin Laid To Rest In Epic, Hours Long Funeral

DETROIT (AP) — Former presidents and preachers joined a parade of pop stars Friday in a singing, hip-swaying, piano-pounding farewell to Aretha Franklin, remembering the Queen of Soul as a powerful force for musical and political change and a steadfast friend.

In a send-off both grand and personal, an all-star lineup of mourners filled the same Detroit church that hosted Rosa Parks’ funeral and offered prayers, songs and dozens of tributes. Guests included former President Bill Clinton, former first lady Hillary Clinton, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson.

Robinson, the Motown great, remembered first hearing Franklin play piano when he was just 8 and remained close to her for the rest of her life, talking for hours at a time. “You’re so special,” he said, before crooning a few lines from his song “Really Gonna Miss You,” with the line “really gonna be different without you.”

Bill Clinton described himself as an Aretha Franklin “groupie” whom he had loved since college days. He traced her life’s journey, praising her as someone who “lived with courage, not without fear, but overcoming her fears.”

He remembered attending her last public performance, at Elton John’s AIDS Foundation benefit in November in New York. She looked “desperately ill” but managed to greet him by standing and saying, “How you doin,’ baby?”

Clinton ended by noting that her career spanned from vinyl records to cellphones. He held the microphone near his iPhone and played a snippet of Franklin’s classic “Think,” the audience clapping along.

“It’s the key to freedom!” Clinton said.

Expected to last several hours, the service encompassed many elements, emotions and grand entrances that were hallmarks of her more than six decades on sacred and secular stages.

Ariana Grande sang one of the Queen’s biggest hits, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” and Faith Hill performed “What a Friend We Have In Jesus.” The Aretha Franklin Orchestra performed a medley featuring “I Say a Little Prayer,” ”Angel” and other songs she was known for, along with such gospel numbers as “I Love the Lord” and “Walk in the Light.”

Barbara Sampson read a statement from former President George W. Bush, saying that Franklin would continue to inspire future generations. The Rev. Al Sharpton read a statement from former President Barack Obama, who wrote that Franklin’s “work reflected the very best of the American story.”

Sharpton received loud cheers when he criticized President Donald Trump for saying that the singer “worked for” him as he responded to her death. “She performed for you,” Sharpton said of Franklin, who had sung at Trump-owned venues. “She worked for us.”

“She gave us pride. She gave us a regal bar to reach. She represented the best in our community,” Sharpton said.

Many noted her longtime commitment to civil rights and lasting concern for the poor. Her friend Greg Mathis, the award-winning reality show host and retired Michigan judge, recalled his last conversation with her. They talked about the tainted water supply in Flint. “You go up there and sock it to ’em,” she urged Mathis, paraphrasing the “sock it to me” refrain from “Respect.”

Franklin died Aug. 16 at age 76.

How to Make the Most of a Long Weekend

How to Make the Most of a Long WeekendWhat’s everyone doing for the long weekend coming up? In general, how do you like to spend long weekends like this, and what historically has been your best long weekend ever? What are your best tips for how to make the most of a long weekend if you don’t have plans?

For my $ .02, I’ve employed a few tactics over the years to make the most of long weekends:

  • The Add-On. If you have one or two days off work, you can add a few days on either end and take a legitimate week-long vacation.
  • The Road Trip. Whether you drive, train, bus, or Zipcar it, this is a great time to get away to outlet malls or other far-flung but close destinations. You can stay with a friend, use Hotel Tonight or a similar service if you’re really feeling adventurous, or plan to head back before the end of the day.
  • Tourist In Your Own Town. Again, check out Hotel Tonight and do other tourist-y things like museums, tours, and more. You don’t have to stay anywhere other than your own apartment, but if you can get a great deal it can be really fun to mix it up for one night.
  • The Staycation. I’ve rounded up my favorite ideas for a staycation before (and we just shared great tips for a family staycation over at CorporetteMoms) — this is honestly one of my favorite ways to spend a long weekend!

(Psst: if you’re near NYC, here’s our guide to shopping in NYC.)

Readers, what are you up to for this long holiday weekend? What are your favorite ways to make the most of a long weekend?

Larry and Toby Milstein Expand ‘Millennial Pink Party’ Into Weekend Long Retreat

The second annual Millennial Pink Party takes to the Hamptons this weekend, and this year the concept has been expanded into a full weekend of events with the help of partners like BCBGeneration, Bloomingdale’s and The Class by Taryn Toomey.
Millennial Pink Party made its debut last year as the re-branded take on the Milstein family’s annual summer Hamptons bash. Real estate scions Larry and Toby Milstein embraced the rosy hue and moved the party to the Breakers in Montauk to lure the young Manhattan social crowd for the party, in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign.
After its success, the one-night event has grown into a weekend, which begins tonight with a private beachside dinner hosted by Whispering Angel. The guest list for Friday night is made up of the Millennial Pink Founders Collective, who are categorized as “a handpicked group of 25 VIP taste makers who will serve as social ambassadors for the Millennial Pink community and provide creative direction on the event.”
Come Saturday, celebrity workout favorite Taryn Toomey will host a session of her workout The Class for guests, followed by the official party at night and a brunch to close things out on Sunday.
The event last year raised more than $ 15,000 for

Here’s how long $1 million will last in retirement in all 50 states

Will $ 1 million be enough for you to retire comfortably on in your golden years? It turns out that depends heavily on where you live in the United States!

RELATED: See the Top 10 things money expert Clark Howard does to save money

Would you move to make your retirement money last longer?

What would you say if we said that you could get another 14 years out of your retirement money depending on where you lived in the USA?

GoBankingRates.com took a close look at monthly expenses for senior citizens — including groceries, housing, utilities, transportation and healthcare — and developed a monthly budget for the average person over age 65.

Then, accounting for cost-of-living expenses by state, they divided a hypothetical $ 1 million portfolio by the monthly budget they worked up. That determined the number of years $ 1 million would last in each state during retirement.

The net result is that while you could live for less than 12 years on a $ 1 million portfolio in Hawaii, you would get almost 26 years out of the same money in Mississippi!

Ever heard the saying, “All real estate is local”? Maybe we should say that “All retirement is local, too”!

Without further ado, here’s a look at how far your retirement money goes in each state of the Union:

Meanwhile, let’s not forget that some retirees will decide to abandon the question of which state will give them the most bang for their buck in retirement.

They’ll just opt to move overseas, where their money goes a lot further!

Countries like Canada, Japan, Mexico, Germany and the United Kingdom are historically among the most popular spots for expatriate retirees. But Central American nations like Costa Rica are becoming increasingly sought out, too.

If you’re considering leaving the United States in your retirement years, you’ve got a lot more to consider than just cost and weather.

Money expert Clark Howard says you should also think about less-considered factors like the cost of medical evacuation insurance and the state of the rental market in whichever foreign country you’re eyeing. Get the full rundown on his thoughts here.

How Long Do You Expect Your Clothes to Last?

Here’s something I’ve been thinking about: how long do you expect your clothes to last these days? I know I’ve seen a lot of comment threads lately about how people feel like clothes 10-15 years ago were made with better lining, better fabrics, and so forth — but in today’s environment (particularly where the trends seem to change so much more quickly than they did a few years ago), how long do you expect things to last? What fabrics and brands make the best “investment” pieces that wear like iron and have classic shapes and styles? And which fabrics and brands do you avoid?

For my $ .02, I’ve been pretty disappointed in some of the nicer pieces I’ve bought recently — one $ 100+ sweater got a hole in it after a few wearings (not as big a hole as the stock photo, but still!), and a pair of $ 160 pants started pilling after two wears. They’re both still wearable… but it’s annoying because I had bought both pieces hoping they’d last several seasons.

A few more questions to ponder as we discuss how long clothes should last:

  • What does your fashion math look like these days? Do you still expect to get more than one season out of clothes (or several years’ worth of wear)? What price do you put on cost-per-wear? (Here’s another super old post for you: our 2009 discussion of how much do you spend on clothes, which is a bit more cost-per-item focused than our last discussion on annual clothes budgets)
  • What is the average age of the items in your work wardrobe? What is the oldest piece of work clothing you still wear?
  • How much do you feel like laundry/dry cleaning matters in terms of extending the cost-per-wear for these items?
  • For those of you who have a capsule wardrobe for work, how often do you replace pieces? I know some women try to keep a minimal wardrobe and limit it to 30 pieces… Are you satisfied when a piece you’ve worn to death needs to be retired, or sad?
  • When your clothes fail you and get rips, pills, holes, etc — do you have any wardrobe hacks that help you make the clothes last longer, either to maintain your dignity for the day of or to keep it in your wardrobe rotation in general? The woman in the stock photo has a scarf on, to hide the rip one presumes (fun fact: I bought this photo for another story and then was annoyed to discover the huge rip because it makes no sense in the context of the photo!) — but if this were actually my sweater I might try to stitch it up and then wear a brooch over it, or a longer scarf to cover the stitch. (Readers with great solutions for fallen hems, please share!)

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts, ladies — how long do you expect your clothes to last these days? What are your favorite brands and stores for great, long-lasting clothes? What are your best wardrobe hacks to make your clothes last longer?

How to avoid long customs and immigration lines on your next trip

So you’ve just sat on a plane for thirteen hours traveling from Indonesia, what you’ll then have to do is stand in line for another few hours waiting to get through customs and immigration. If only there some sort of guide was available to help you get through quicker…

You’re standing in line, it seems as though time itself has stood still and seconds can feel like hours. Not to mention you’ve got someone behind you huffing and puffing so much you can actually feel their breath on the back of your neck. Don’t even get us started on the crying baby that seems to have followed you from the plane to the customs line.

There’s an app for that

Re-entering the country doesn’t have to be as much of a hassle as you think though. It is possible to download the Mobile Passport app on your cell phone which will get you through customs and immigration in mere minutes instead of the several hours it usually takes. It is relatively unheard of so the lines for getting through are very small at the airport. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you will need to save a bit of your basic personal information on it, such as a photo and your passport number. After you have landed and are being taxied, you can take your phone off airplane mode and access the app. You will have to answer some basic questions just like you would at customs. Once complete and you’ve arrived at the customs kiosks you can head on over to the Mobile Passport lane and show them the QR code you’ll get for completing the questions on the Mobile Passport app. Show them the code and then proceed through and you can leave the misery of standing in the customs and immigration line to everyone else. You can even include your family members traveling with you.

Global Entry

You can enroll in the Global Entry scheme which gains quicker passage through customs and immigration for American citizens. Low-risk travelers qualify, and it allows them to bypass lines when they get to customs and immigration in the U.S. They just have to simply stroll up to a kiosk and enter their pin number, known as a Trusted Traveler number, along with doing a fingerprint scan. The Global Entry scheme doesn’t work for family members though, they will have to become approved individually, so if you’re planning a family trip abroad, you’ll need to get the whole family enrolled or else you’ll have to wait anyway. Global Entry will set you back $ 100 for five years, which is a good return for your investment if you are a frequent traveler. You’ll just need to head over to the Global Entry website to see whether you qualify and you can begin your application process.

Those were the two tips we think will save you a bunch of time at the airport when you land back in the States. We think it is worth giving them a go as anything beats being stuck in line for hours at a time.

Time’s Up for R. Kelly—Because It’s Long Past Time to Believe Black Survivors

Women of color within the Time’s Up campaign have joined forces with the activist-led #MuteRKelly protest co-founded by Kenyette Tisha Barnes and Oronike Odeyle, joining a community of black activists demanding accountability for the allegations of assault, exploitation and abuse against the entertainer spanning decades.

Inspired by the recent guilty verdict of Bill Cosby, Time’s Up published an open letter calling on members to join the social media campaign. “As women of color within Time’s Up,” they wrote, “we recognize that we have a responsibility to help right this wrong. We intend to shine a bright light on our WOC sisters in need. It is our hope that we will never feel ignored or silenced ever again.”

R. Kelly is an influential R&B musician, producer and songwriter who, for over two decades, has also been a known sexual predator and assailant. In 1994, he secretly and unlawfully married musician Aaliyah when she was just 15 years old; just last year, reports broke that he was brainwashing, abusing and holding young women against their will. Despite consistent and persistent allegations of abuse, sexual misconduct with minors and even child pornography, Kelly has, for too long, evaded criminal charges, maintained a successful career and dismissed and silenced his accusers.

“Over the past 25 years, the man known publicly as R. Kelly has sold 60 million albums, toured the globe repeatedly and accumulated hundreds of millions of plays on radio and streaming services,” the Time’s Up letter reads. “During this time, he also married a girl under 18 years of age; was sued by at least four women for sexual misconduct, statutory rape, aggravated assault, unlawful restraint and furnishing illegal drugs to a minor; was indicted on 21 counts of child pornography; has faced allegations of sexual abuse and imprisonment of women under threats of violence and familial harm.”

At long last, however, R. Kelly’s time is up.

In an interview with Glamour, Odeleye placed the Time’s Up letter and the growing interest in her campaign in context—crediting the #MeToo movement for a long overdue call for accountability for Kelly and other men who have abused and exploited women, and particularly women of color, with impunity. “When #MeToo broke, I knew it was an important conversation,” she told the magazine. “It’s an important step that women in power decided to take. They spoke out about their real experiences, and it emboldens the rest of us—if those women could do it, I can speak up, too. But the fact that it lacked representation of women of color in the beginning frustrated me, because it’s often women of color who experience this kind of stuff and don’t feel like there is a place to come out and talk about what’s happening to them.”

Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement, echoed those sentiments in an interview with NPR. “We have seen 24 years of allegations leveled against R. Kelly, and he has gone unscathed,” she told reporters. “So what the letter does is join the #MuteRKelly campaign, that was well on its way already, and joined the chorus of black women around the country who have been saying we want some accountability. Those things have to be interrogated. And I think at the very least we need to see corporations step away from them until we have satisfactory investigation into these allegations.”

As the #MeToo movement and the Time’s Up campaign both continue to create new spaces and conversations around sexual harassment, abuse, exploitation and violence, it is critical that we continue, as well, to ensure that nobody gets left behind. This is only the beginning, and we must continue to listen to and believe black women—and finally mute R. Kelly.

‘We’ve suffered long enough’ Ireland’s abortion battle and the young women fighting for choice

As voters face a referendum to reform Ireland’s abortion laws, Tracy Ramsden speaks to the women fighting for their future

irish abortion referendum

‘We cannot continue to export our problems and import our solutions with a situation where women in crisis are risking their lives through the use of unregulated medicines,’ said Ireland’s taoiseach, Leo Varadkar on announcing the Irish abortion referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment that currently outlaws abortion and carries a 14-year prison sentence for women who seek treatment. His words offered hope to a new generation of women fighting the abortion ban and their right to what they see as basic healthcare.

Varadkar was referring to the 11 women every day who, as a result of the abortion ban, are forced to make the journey from Ireland to mainland UK for safe, legal treatment. ‘This marks a shift in public opinion,’ says Hannah Little, 28, one of the founders of the London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign. ‘It feels like now is the time to right a wrong that has forced women to be exiled for too long.’

‘Nobody wants an abortion, it’s about needing it,’ says Michelle Linton, 34, from Kildare, who had a termination at 18 weeks pregnant when her son was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, Zellweger syndrome, that meant his life expectancy was zero to six months. ‘At 16, I walked by a pro-life demo, read the leaflet in my lunch hour and decided I’d never have an abortion. Then, in 2012, I found myself in Liverpool Women’s Hospital, having made the decision to have a termination. It was the same month the news broke of 31-year-old Savita Halappanavar, who had died in Galway after being denied an emergency abortion. It was a reminder of all the hidden women who had made this journey before me, and the tragic ones who couldn’t.’

‘It was a reminder of all the hidden women who had made this journey before me, and the tragic ones who couldn’t.’

Michelle had given birth twice before her abortion – once to her healthy, now seven-year-old son Calum, and before that, to her first-born, Evan, who was diagnosed with Zellweger syndrome and died aged 11 weeks. ‘We cuddled him and he took a big breath, but he never took another one. After Evan died, I hit rock bottom. So four years later, when I fell pregnant and got the same diagnosis, I knew I couldn’t survive going through with the pregnancy.’ Like many of her friends, Michelle will be voting to repeal the Eighth Amendment in the referendum in May to lift the abortion ban, but there is a generational divide, explains Michelle. ‘Some long-held religious views may never change.’

The feeling on the ground, especially in Dublin, is that the country is on the precipice of significant progress with marches and canvassing by local MPs – spearheaded predominantly by those under 35. But with the rise of right-wing populism around the world and the unexpected results of the US election and Brexit, there’s no room for complacency.

‘It is about having these awkward conversations in small towns and villages in rural Ireland, presenting the medical facts and being mindful that it’s still a sensitive issue,’ adds Little. ‘We’re also calling on the 40,000 Irish people who live overseas, but are eligible to return home to vote. If this doesn’t go our way, it’s heartbreaking to think it could be another 50 years before we get another say on this. Our time has to be now.’

Darren Criss Says Engagement ‘Was a Long Time Coming’ — and Reveals He ‘Waited’ to Announce It

Darren Criss is opening up about proposing to longtime girlfriend Mia Swier, saying it “was a long time coming” after the two dated for over seven years.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story actor, 31, told Esquire.com in an interview published Wednesday that he and Swier “waited a while before we announced it.”

“I had a whole thing written, like, ‘Usually I don’t like talking about my private life…’ which I really don’t — I was really allergic to it for a while,” he said.

“Eventually, I got over myself and realized that it’s just the best way to let people know.”

Criss shared a photo of the two on Instagram and Twitter in January, writing, “Mia and I have had seven and a half years of fun, wacky, wonderful, CRAZY adventures together.”

“And I’m happy to announce that we’re kicking those adventures up a notch. We’re goin for it. To boldly go where neither of us have gone before. Engage,” the former Glee star added.

While it is unclear when the proposal took place, Criss and Swier last attended the Los Angeles premiere of the FX series in Hollywood together on Jan. 8. At the time, the writer was seen without an engagement ring.

In a 2013 interview, Criss briefly talked about their relationship, saying, “Oh yeah, we’ve been together a long time. I didn’t know I was going to be on TV when we started dating.”

Swier attended New York University’s Steinhardt School of Media Studies and Television Production and has worked for networks such as Fox and Showtime.

Criss is currently starring in the FX show Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story as Andrew Cunanan, the man who murdered famed fashion designer, Gianni Versace.

Tom Brady Isn’t the Highest-Paid NFL Player by a Long Shot. Here Are the Top 5

Super Bowl LII will pit the underdog Philadelphia Eagles against the New England Patriots dynasty led by quarterback Tom Brady on Feb. 4.

But it may surprise you that Brady, considered by some to be the greatest quarterback in NFL history, is not among the top 10 highest-paid NFL players, according to NFL salary and contract analysis site Over the Cap. Even more surprising about Brady’s absence from the list is that the 16 highest-paid NFL players are also quarterbacks Brady only ranks at No. 15 with an average salary of $ 20.5 million a year.

The average salary of an NFL player is $ 2.1 million, according to Forbes, but Brady’s salary still ranks far below some of his peers.

So if a five-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback who has never had a losing season in the NFL can’t crack the list of highest-paid players, who can? Here’s a look at the top 5 NFL players making the most money in 2018.

5) Kirk Cousins, Quarterback — Washington Redskins

Despite leading the Redskins to only one playoff appearance — in 2015 when they lost in the first round Wild Card game to the Green Bay Packers — Kirk Cousins is one of the highest-paid NFL players. He earned $ 23,943,600 in 2017 — a contract that was 100% guaranteed due to a franchise tag, which binds upcoming free agents to the team for another year, according to Over the Cap.

Cousins’ contract is up in 2018, which means he will be a free agent again. And despite not being seen as a marquee quarterback, he is likely to be one of the more desired players at the position in a subpar free agent quarterback market.

4) Drew Brees, Quarterback — New Orleans Saints

Drew Brees is consistently one of the best-performing quarterbacks in the league and his contract reflects that.

He signed a one-year contract extension with the Saints in late 2016, which netted him a 100%-guaranteed salary of $ 24.25 million, Over the Cap reports. He is also set to become a free agent in 2018, but the Saints might be keen to hold onto their Super Bowl winner, who almost led New Orleans to this year’s NFC Championship game before a miraculous last-second win by the Minnesota Vikings.

3) Andrew Luck, Quarterback — Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis Colts v Cleveland Browns
Joe Robbins—Getty Images

The Colts’ franchise quarterback signed a massive six-year deal in 2016, which temporarily made Luck the highest-paid NFL player of all time.

The total deal is worth $ 122,970,000, with at least $ 47 million of that guaranteed, according to Over the Cap.

But Luck stands to miss out on some of that money if he can can’t stay healthy. The once-promising star did not play a single game in the 2017 season due to a lingering shoulder injury that required surgery.

2) Derek Carr, Quarterback — Oakland Raiders

Cincinnati Bengals v Oakland Raiders
Thearon W. Henderson—Getty Images

In June 2017, Derek Carr became the one to usurp Luck’s status as the highest-paid NFL player of all time, but that status wouldn’t last long (more on that later).

Nevertheless, Oakland’s 26-year-old franchise QB signed a whopping $ 125,025,000 contract extension over five years, of which he’ll see at least $ 40 million. It will be interesting to see how Carr makes the most out of that stability under incoming head coach Jon Gruden, who was just made the highest-paid coach in the league with his recent signing.

1) Matthew Stafford, Quarterback — Detroit Lions

New York Jets v Detroit Lions

Just a couple of months after Carr signed his record-breaking contract, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford made history with a five-year, $ 135 million deal that earned him the top spot on the list of highest-paid NFL players. He gets paid $ 27 million annually — the NFL’s highest-ever salary.

Stafford is also guaranteed to make at least $ 60 million, which is another NFL record.

But despite the major investment in Stafford, the Detroit Lions could not manage to make the playoffs this season.

5 Super Slow and 5 Super Fast Recipes For Long Workdays

all day crockpot recipesIf one of your holiday gifts last year was a new pressure cooker or slow cooker (Instant Pot included), or if you just haven’t been getting enough mileage out of either or both of these kitchen appliances, we thought we’d round up some recipes for inspiration. Here are five all day crockpot recipes and five super fast Instant Pot recipes we’re interested in trying — slow for the long workdays, and fast when you want to make something quick (15 minutes or less) when you get home from work and can’t deal with another meal from Seamless or the freezer. Do you have a new pressure cooker or slow cooker that you’ve been trying out? What are your favorite sources of recipes (or recipes!) for them? Do you have any go-to fast or slow meals?

Psst: We’ve also talked about slow cooker recipes for working women, shared Instant Pot tips, and discussed the best cookware and kitchen appliances — and Kat’s shared some of her easy weeknight dinners in the past as well.

Here are some workday-friendly recipes to try in your slow cooker or pressure cooker:

All Day Crockpot Recipes: Up to 10 Hours

These work really well for long workdays — a cooker with a timer can keep your meal warm for another 1–2 hours after it’s finished cooking.

  • A Year of Slow Cooking suggests meals with beans — even after hours of cooking, they won’t be dried out. Prep time: soak beans overnight (or 1–2 hours); cook time: 9 hours on low.
  • Recipes that Crock has a recipe for Italian pot roast. Prep time: 5 minutes; cook time: 8–10 hours on low).
  • Skinny Taste shares an easy recipe for jerk pork with Caribbean salsa. Prep time: marinate overnight; cook time: 9 hours on low.
  • The Skinny Fork shares a spaghetti squash Thai “noodle” bowl. Prep time: 1 minute to poke holes in squash, plus a few minutes to prep dressing and steam broccoli; cook time: 8–9 hours on low.
  • Cafe Johnsonia offers a vegan option for white bean stew. Prep time: 20 minutes; cook time: 8–10 hours on low.

Super Fast Instant Pot Recipes: 15 Minutes or Less

If you get home late or just don’t have much time to cook, try these quick and easy recipes.

  • Instant Pot shares a 1-minute pork chops and homemade applesauce recipe.
  • Health Starts in the Kitchen offers a 5-minute salmon and rice pilaf recipe.
  • A Fork’s Tale has a 15-minute orange chicken recipe that can be made while you steam broccoli and prepare rice.
  • The Sausagetarian offers a curried red lentil and sweet potato soup that is ready in about 10 minutes, including prep time.
  • Two Sleevers has a 10-minute recipe for chicken tikka masala. At the end, you remove the chicken and freeze half of the sauce for leftovers. (You’ll probably want to marinate the chicken for 1–2 hours ahead of time.)

Do you have a slow cooker and/or pressure cooker? What are your favorite all day crockpot recipes, or super fast Instant Pot recipes for when you’re short on time in the evenings?

How Long Do You Spend On Your Hair for Work?

Here’s a question I don’t think we’ve talked about before: How long do you spend on your hair for work? Did you choose your cut in order to spend less time on your hair? Do you prefer to spend a lot of time in one chunk (such as going to get a blowout once a week (or give yourself one) and then just brush-and-go your hair the rest of the week? Do you do your hair the same way every day, or do you have a “third-day hair” look (or, hey, a fourth- or fifth-day hair look)? There’s no right answer here, obviously — I’m just curious!

For my $ .02, when I was younger I probably spent about 30–40 minutes a day on my wavyish hair — washing it daily, blowdrying it as well as possible. There were years where I spent time with a roundbrush and the blowdryer on a daily basis trying to flatten the coarser waves on the back of my head! (I even had a weird headband technique that I thought saved me time — I would take a hard plastic headband with teeth and, after blowdrying, wear it on top of my hair, around my neck, for about 15 minutes while I finished getting ready.) I definitely tried and discarded some hairstyles because they just required too much upkeep on my hair — for example, I loved the look of an asymmetrical bob but it only looked good if my hair was stick straight and freshly cut.

As I’ve gotten older the waves have become curls (I’m probably around 2C/3A for most of my head, with some annoying underlayers that are still more like 2A wavy) and my hair has gotten drier, so I wash it much less frequently, let it air dry at night, and am more likely to throw it up in a bun or other updo (or half-updo) for daily wear, with a commitment to getting a proper blowout when I’ve got any major meetings to attend. (I’ve always just popped in my local salon for a blowout, but I was blown away with how quickly the woman at Drybar did my hair — I swear she had it done in 30 minutes when it can sometimes take as long as 60–70 minutes elsewhere.) This week I’m going for another keratin appointment, which will ultimately reduce styling/drying time — but spending three hours on my hair at once seems like a huge time suck!

How about you guys: How much time do you spend on your hair for work? How much time you spend on a daily, weekly, monthly basis? What tips and tricks have you found to help you spend less time on your hair for work?

Psst: we’ve talked about how to make a blowout last for days, your favorite dry shampoo, easy office updos, and lots more about office hairstyles in general.
