BEST DEAL UPDATE (UK):

Outfit Formula: Long Blazer Fabness

The long blazer takes me back to the ‘90s. I wore them then, but it’s not a look I crave today. I am cautious about this length of blazer because the proportions can look off to my eye, especially when you wear flat footwear like I do. I did, though, enjoy a long blazer dressy pants suit because it created an elongating column of colour. You couldn’t see where your leg line stopped because of the low contrast between the jacket and pants. I had a favourite apple green long blazer suit in 1994 that I regularly wore to work. Greg said I looked like a lime milkshake, which made me love that suit even more. I would wear a long blazer in that way today.

I have many clients across a range of body types in long blazers. It’s been more popular than I thought. Almost everyone who wears blazers regularly has refreshed with the trendy long silhouette. Here are four ways to create outfits with long blazers. Choose any colour palette across solids and patterns.

1. Smart Casual

This is the easiest look to pull together. Combine a pair of slim jeans or pants like skinnies or straights with a layering top and statement long blazer. Add shoes that work with the outfit. The pants or jeans can be cropped or full length. The top can be tucked or untucked.

Eloquii Long Tailored Blazer

2. Casually Thrown Together

Combine an A-line skirt with a long fluid blazer and layering top. I like how the tight top adds structure to the fluid blazer. Add booties and Bob’s your uncle. Keep the skirt straight if you want to create traditionally flattering proportions.

Allsaints Helei Check Oversize Blazer

3. Classically Elegant

Combine a black top with cropped straight pants or jeans in any colour. Top it off with a long black blazer for a twinset effect up top. Add dressy shoes, and you’re in business. Good for corporate settings and dressier occasions.

Trina Turk Critic Long Blazer

4. Fashion-Forward Fun

This is by far my favourite of the four because it reminds me of the apple green suit I had in the ‘90s, with white accents and all. You need a non-neutral suit with a long blazer for this rendition, so maybe you’ll get one. I would if the right one came along. White top and footwear add a fashionable and crisp touch. Add jewellery, watch and eyewear as desired.

Save Up to 50% Off ROXY Sale Styles!

Outfit Formula: Long Shorts and Sandals

Shorts in all sorts of lengths, fabrics, colours, patterns and silhouettes are more on-trend than ever. In my experience with my clientele and what I see on the street, most enjoy wearing shorts that are mid-thigh length or shorter, especially in the US. Personally, I prefer the look of shorts when they’re a little longer, with lengths ranging from right above the kneecap to just below the kneecap like in the outfits shown here. Some call these longer shorts bermudas.

There is no right or wrong length, but simply your preferences and comfort levels. Shorter shorts might be your thing, or you may enjoy showcasing your legs. For those who like to wear longer shorts, there are plenty to choose from this season.

Here are some casual and dressy looks with longer shorts and Summer sandals. The leg silhouette can taper or flare out. Feel free to use any colour palette.

1. White Shorts & Denim Jacket

White denim looks great with pastels and blue denim. Combine a pastel top with white shorts in cotton or denim and top things off with a blue denim jacket. Finish off the look with white, metallic, tan, or pearl grey sandals.

Lane Bryant Chino Bermuda Short

2. Bermudas & Blazer

Crisp and dressy blazers can create a fun juxtaposition with denim shorts, which can be mildly or hectically distressed. Add a layering top and sandals, and you’re done. Here the white sandals pick up the white of the tops, but you can sport any colour.

Frame Le Vintage Bermuda

3. Elegant Fluidity

I adore the combination of fluid top with dressier shorts. The dainty flat sandals are the crisp cherry on top, thereby adding to the relaxed and breezy elegance of the outfit. They also pick up the white of the top.

Adam Lippes Stretch Canvas Bermuda Shorts

4. Dressy Charm

Combine a pair of dressy long black shorts with a dramatic and dressy top, and see what happens. The shorts are dressy because of their fabric, length and silhouette. The sheerness of the black top breaks up the expanse of the black, as does the embroidery. Finish off the look with a dressier sandal, slide, or mule.

SIMONE ROCHA Belted Feather-trimmed Wool-blend Shorts

I don’t wear shorts because I prefer to wear midi skirts, dresses and cropped pants when it’s hot. That said, if I were to venture back into wearing shorts, I’d wear the longer lengths that cover the kneecap. How about you? Do you like to wear long shorts, or do you prefer then mid-thigh and shorter?

How to pack lightly for long trips

Whether you’re going abroad or up the road, if you’re going away for a while and you can’t nip back home to do a cheeky swap, or pick up that small but essential item you forgot, then you need to pack smart. This will also help when it comes to the volume of possessions that you take with you, as you will need to look closely at what is essential and what can be left behind.

The bag itself

You will need to consider what type of bag or luggage carrier you’re using, as this will affect how you pack and how much space you have. Whether you’re going hiking in Machu Picchu or simply going on a long-haul business trip, there us an appropriately sized luggage-carrier and then there is going too far. When choosing your carrier, you’ll need to consider the weight of your bags, so be sure to keep a close eye on when you’re going overboard. So, start by limiting how much you can actually bring with you by limiting the space in your luggage.

How to pack lightly for long trips

Folding appropriately

One major tip is to use the most space-saving and effective fold. Generally, it is recommended to fold your item in half and then roll it up, and this also prevents creasing that a typical fold would typically cause. There are various ways in which you can roll your clothes up, but we recommend keeping it simple while finding your preference. This is recommended no matter what your activity or destination, it has even been keenly recommended for home use as well.

Lightweight technical gear

Fashion isn’t always going to happen when you need to pack for a long trip; in fact, it’s best to scrap it altogether. There are various ranges of lightweight jackets and footwear, amongst other items, which will be much lighter and just as warm. Some fashion brands have actually adopted a more technical look to promote sales, so sometimes fashion can be incorporated into technical, except you’ll get 100% of the benefits. As for footwear, while it might be tempting to bring a pair for every occasion, don’t! Take between two and three pairs which can be multi-purposeful but do not exceed this limit.

Travel-sized items

They were invented for a reason, although many experts would suggest not purchasing any toiletries until you reach your destination. That way you will never have to give up space for something you don’t need to return, and you may finish and throw away if you’re smart. However, other necessities such as toothbrushes, towels, etc. all come with a travel size option, and you should use it. For example, a basic microfibre travel towel folds up much smaller than a regular towel and is quick-drying. These are amazing for any kinds of travels, rolling up as small as a T-shirt!

How to pack lightly for long trips

Weigh your luggage

If you’re traveling by airplane, then you will have a maximum weight you will be able to take, if you purchase some luggage scales you’ll know exactly how much your items weigh and whether there’s something non-essential that needs taking out and leaving behind.

Wherever you’re going, there’s always a simple and more effective solution, you might just have to sacrifice some of those luxuries that take up a load of space.

Kris Kobach Auditions for DHS Job on Fox: Detain Children ‘As Long As Necessary’

A day after Kirstjen Nielsen’s abrupt departure as Homeland Security secretary, former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach essentially auditioned for her old job by showing up on one of President Trump’s favorite cable news programs for an interview.

During Monday night’s appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight, Kobach—who previously vice-chaired Trump’s now-shuttered voter fraud commission—began the interview by telling host Tucker Carlson that the Department of Homeland Security has been the “biggest impediment” to enacting the president’s immigration policies.

“Leadership for the past two years has been unwilling to execute many of the president’s plans,” Kobach declared. “From direct personal experience, I have been in the room when the president has given express orders to leadership at DHS and been assured those orders will be carried out. Then a year later nothing has happened.”

iPhone 11 may finally deliver a long overdue feature

iPhone 11 Release

In any given year, it’s not uncommon to see a number of conflicting reports concerning upcoming iPhone features. This, of course, isn’t terribly surprising given that Apple early on in the development cycle will often test various prototype designs with different features. Indeed, this is the reason why, in the build-up to the iPhone X unveiling in 2017, we saw some reports claiming Apple was going to release a device with Touch ID built into the display itself.

With that said, one of the more interesting iPhone 11 rumors we’ve seen pop up over the past few months centers on Apple potentially ditching the tried and true Lightning port for USB-C. More recently, though, credible reports have indicated that while that may happen in the near future, Apple with the iPhone 11 will stick with the Lightning connector.

Buju Banton Walks Like a Champion with ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ Concert

@itsknottv for The Daily Beast

When flight 559 traveling from JFK touched down in Kingston, Jamaica on Wednesday March 13, the pilot thanked the passengers for flying Jet Blue, told us to enjoy the island’s 85-degree temperature, and insisted we have fun at the weekend’s concert.

Obviously, he didn’t need to specify which concert: it’s the gig that’s filled up flights to Jamaica’s capital for the past week, packed hotels and guest houses, and increased Airbnb bookings to nearly 100% occupancy. Websites crashed within minutes of tickets going on sale, unable to handle the demand.

Buju Banton’s Long Walk to Freedom Concert, one of the biggest music events in Jamaica’s history, was held Saturday night at Kingston’s National Stadium, marking the reggae icon’s return to the stage after an eight-year absence. Banton didn’t willingly take a break from performing; he had been incarcerated in federal prison following a conviction on cocaine trafficking charges.

10 “Free” Things That Cost You Money in the Long Run

Life is expensive. Between the mortgage, insurance, car payments, and unexpected repairs, homeowners have a lot of money going out. It’s understandable, then, that many are tempted to take advantage of freebies when they’re offered. But be wary: There’s a price to pay for everything—even the free stuff. Before you accept freebies, understand what you’re actually getting. Goods and services that you don’t have to pay for may not be up to standard or may come with sneaky fine print, or they may just cause more problems. So, while you might save money in the short term, in the long run you could live to regret your frugal choices. Avoid these 10 “free” things that are likely to end up costing you money.

Avengers: Endgame Spoilers

2018 was in many ways Marvel Studios’ most successful year to date, with Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War both dominating the conversation (as well as the box office) for months. That momentum didn’t stop in the early days of 2019 either, as Black Panther was nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was on hand to celebrate in Beverly Hills, California.

But Feige can’t go anywhere without being asked about the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, and that’s exactly what happened on the Red Carpet last night, as MTV News managed to wrangle the Marvel executive for an impromptu interview. Take the long view: Chile revisited

In three trips over 25 years, writer Sara Wheeler has discovered as much about this South American country as she has about herself

When I first went to Chile 30 years ago, I interviewed a television weatherman. Every evening after the six o’clock news, this fellow had to say : “Tomorrow it will be very hot in the north, pleasantly warm in the middle, and perishing at the bottom.”

What a shape. That was what attracted me to this long, thin country. Could a Chilean woman at the top possibly have anything in common with a man born 4,270 kilometres (2,653 miles) below her? How can a country function when it is 25 times longer than it is wide? I went to find out. This is the story of a love affair with a land where I spent six months travelling from the Peruvian border to Cape Horn; it is also a story of return; and of the ever-changing past. The working title of the book that resulted from that first journey was Keep the Mountains on the Left. If I did that, I couldn’t get lost.

Best accessories for long flights

Nobody wants to be sitting on a long haul flight feeling uncomfortable, bored, and irritable. Flights can be overwhelming and stressful enough, without the added discomfort and unpleasantness of a screaming baby next to you or a sore neck from trying to sleep. Whether you travel once a year or every weekend, across the state or the world, there are some vital accessories you should always pack, to make your long flight just that little bit more bearable.

Block out the noise

If your pet peeve is screaming children and crying babies on a long flight, then one of the best accessories you could invest in is some good quality, noise canceling headphones. With these, you can listen to your music, which most people find to be relaxing and enjoyable on a flight while drowning out all of the surrounding sounds. They might even help you to have a nap on the plane.

Sleep well

If sleeping on long flights is your entertainment of choice – we don’t blame you – then a travel pillow and eye mask are must-haves, along with those noise-canceling headphones or maybe some earplugs. The only thing worse than waking up with a neckache is waking up with a neckache on a flight when you still have to endure potentially hours of traveling. Neck pillows can reduce that risk, along with helping you sleep better.

Don’t get bored

Electronics like phones and tablets can make a long journey feel significantly less boring. Make sure you bring a power pack and charger, too, and you’ve got entertainment for the entire flight. Whether you prefer to play games or watch movies you’ve downloaded – see, another use for those headphones – some sort of electronic device and charger can be a lifesaver. The main way you can avoid a miserable flight is to make sure you have plenty of things to do to keep yourself entertained, so electronics, reading books, or magazines are a must-have.

Keep yourself refreshed

A small bag of toiletries can do wonders for you on a long flight. We all know that after a couple of hours, we don’t feel too cute anymore, so keep a little bag of lip balm, roll-on deodorant, hand gel, moisturizer, and other small products to hand. Whenever you’re feeling uncomfortable or even unhygienic, use your little rescue pack to freshen up and keep yourself feeling the best you can on a long journey.

Get comfy

Some fluffy socks or slippers could be the best thing you’ve ever packed for a long haul plane journey. It’s no secret that our feet can swell when we’re up in the air, as well as just feel generally hot and uncomfortable. So, when you’re on your way, kick off your shoes, put on some cozy footwear, and enjoy your flight in luxury.

Flights can be exhausting at the best of times, but keep these handy accessories on you, and your next trip won’t feel quite so bad. They’re never going to be the most fun you’ve ever had, but if you pack wisely, you don’t have to feel irritated and miserable the entire way.

That Didn’t Take Long: Novelists Tackle Trump

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Standing for months in front of Trump Tower with a “literary” sign—such as WHO WILL GO UPRIVER FOR PRESIDENT KURTZ?—I wondered which American novelists would dare to brave the supposed curse of topicality and treat the famously litigious Donald Trump during his Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now presidency.

The first was the relatively new U.S. citizen Salman Rushdie in The Golden House. In the last month or so, Gary Shteyngart in Lake Success and Jonathan Lethem in The Feral Detective have published novels set, respectively, just before and just after Trump’s election. All three novelists call Trump a “monster” but avoid engaging him directly as a character. They instead make him an off-stage figure, to whom their characters react, and invent Trumpian stand-ins to absorb the writers’ wrath.

Sufficiently enraged to stand in the cold, I hoped for a novel as super-heated, explicitly political, and courageous as Robert Coover’s The Public Burning. About the Rosenbergs’ execution as “Atomic Spies” in 1953 when Richard Nixon was vice president, written in the ’70s when Nixon was president, and featuring Nixon as a major character, The Public Burning is an epic circus that mix-masters fact and fabrication. The novel closes with its superhero Uncle Sam, personification of old white-man anger, preparing Nixon to screw the American public as Sam has prepared all past presidents: by sodomizing him. Scheduled for a Bicentennial release, The Public Burning was delayed by legal challenges and one publisher’s cowardice until 1977.

How Long Must Incarcerated Women Wait for Dignity?

It’s been fits and starts for the FIRST STEP Act, the prison reform bill that’s been resurrected in the news after the Senate drafted its own version including modest sentencing reform. In a matter of five days, the President signaled his approval of the bill, the Majority Leader rejected the notion and the incoming Senate Judiciary Committee Chair said to press that he would push it forward. The religious right and the ACLU, in a unique partnership, have been lobbying for the legislation for the past two weeks.

What will happen now with the FIRST STEP Act is anyone’s guess. But even if it stumbles, meaningful prison reform is imminently achievable in this Congress. Protecting women, the fastest-growing prison population, should be a priority—but instead, The Dignity for Incarcerated Women Act has been stalled in Congress since it was introduced in 2017.

Women in U.S. prisons are routinely denied free tampons and sanitary pads, and pregnant women are shackled and housed in solitary confinement. About 80 percent of women in prison are mothers, and their incarceration—through distance, high phone rates and suboptimal visiting policies—separates them from their children in multiple ways; about 94 percent have a history of physical or sexual abuse, and can’t get the appropriate treatment they need on the inside.

The Dignity Act, introduced in July 2017 to much fanfare by Senators Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Richard Durbin, would remedy these maladies, giving women in prison the lives they’re already entitled to under the United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners.

Within just a week of its introduction alone, the bill spurred the Bureau of Prisons to implement new procedures. In Congress, it was quickly referred to the Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator Chuck Grassley, a relatively recent convert to belief that our prisons are in crisis who likely would have wrangled the Republicans on the committee to getting it to the floor—and its passage was never likely to be a partisan war.

When similar “dignity acts” were presented this year in the state legislatures of California, Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana and Virginia, not one opposing vote was cast. That’s not surprising: The various “dignity acts” are each a referendum on human rights, and voting against them is hard. Who would vote to shackle pregnant women? Hopefully no one.

Yet, despite its momentum, there’s been no significant movement for the Act. Instead, drafters of the FIRST STEP Act borrowed its ban on shackling, as well as the mandate for access to personal hygiene supplies. In September, a House bill that would ban the shackling of pregnant women also popped up.

Altogether, it seems like someone simply gave up on the Dignity Act long ago and didn’t bother to tell anyone—which is rather undignified. In its place, the FIRST STEP Act has become the sole focus of reform efforts, eclipsing holistic dignity without good reason, since we know from similar successes that the provisions in the Dignity Act have broad support from lawmakers of all persuasions.

Undoubtedly, there will be people who think the Dignity Act shouldn’t have priority in the midst of prison reform efforts in Congress, precisely because of its focus on women. But the reality is that the Dignity Act would be impactful across the system—and might even achieve more than the FIRST STEP Act even could.

The Vera Institute of Justice released a report last month calling for grounding correctional practice on human dignity and fostering respect for incarcerated persons within the prison system, and urged officials to “elevate and support personal relationships” and “respect a person’s capacity to grow and change.”

The recommendations from the Vera Institute are only partially enshrined in the FIRST STEP Act. FIRST STEP contains carve-outs that prevent people convicted of certain crimes from participating in certain programs—exceptions that don’t respect a person’s capacity to rehabilitate themselves. Close reading of the bill also reveals that there are specific populations which lawmakers don’t think deserve the dignity of inclusion and investment of government resources.

The Dignity Act, on the other hand, would establish an ombudsman and a mentoring program by formerly incarcerated people for all people held in federal custody—recognizing the standing that any inmate has to demand human treatment and rehabilitation. And because it addresses the rights of primary caregivers, it uplifts men and women serving time with family waiting on the outside.

This isn’t to say that the FiRST STEP Act isn’t a good bill. (It is.) And the approximately 4,000 people who will feel relief immediately if it passes into law will also include some female federal prisoners, including changes to mandatory minimum sentencing laws that could impact the more than half of women in prisons charged with non-violent property and drug crimes that carried grotesque mandatory sentences, sometimes for life in prison. Alice Marie Johnson, whose life sentence was commuted by President Trump this summer, was one of those women—sentenced to life without parole for selling drugs to make ends meet, her first offense.

It doesn’t matter which statute prevents men from snapping metal clasps and chains around the ankles of a pregnant woman or denying them a maxi-pad during a heavy flow day. As long as it gets done in this country, it’s a win. But we can’t let would-be victories siphon our attention away from the revised prioritization of the Dignity Act.

How women’s dignity got downgraded is just a replay of what happens routinely when we focus on the needs of incarcerated women. We hail efforts to help women in prison when they’re announced, but if our interest in this change doesn’t endure, the energy behind them inevitably gets redirected the needs of male prisoners.

The FIRST STEP Act doesn’t need to be the first step. There’s no good reason why the Dignity for Incarcerated Women Act hasn’t already been made law or been brought to the floor for the vote it deserves.

If we don’t center women, they often get left behind. If we don’t continue fighting for them, there will be no victories for them. The well-being of women in prison should not need to be sacrificed for the “greater good” of the men serving time alongside them—men whose needs are entirely different than theirs.

Dignity for women is reform for all.

The Long Tradition of Americans Drinking in Paris

Bettmann

In his recent book, A Drinkable Feast, my fellow Daily Beast cocktail historian Philip Greene presents an informative and lively account of the drinks that put the “Lost” into “Lost Generation,” all linked up to the legendary bars in which those young Americans who flooded into Paris in the 1920s drank them. Sidecars at Harry’s New York Bar, Champagne Cocktails at the Ritz bar, Rose Cocktails at the Chatham, Jimmie Specials at the Dingo—as Phil ably shows, Paris at the time was a buffet of delights for the discerning cocktail-drinker.

But Ernest Hemingway, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Harry and Caresse Crosby and their ilk weren’t the first Americans to set up camp in the City of Lights and Harry’s, the Ritz and all the rest of the famous watering holes weren’t the first Parisian bars that set out to make Cocktails, Sours, Juleps, Cobblers and all the other stations of the American drinking cross.

In fact, from at least the 1840s until the German Wehrmacht came goose-stepping in a hundred years later it was Paris, not London or Havana, that was the Cocktail’s strongest bastion outside North America, although those cities loom far larger in modern Cocktail mythology.

Bill Maher Exposes Trump’s Trail of Broken Promises: ‘You Can Only Slide So Long on Charm’

HBO

In the season finale of HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher began his monologue by thanking his “head writer” Donald Trump, and explaining how he just really “needs a fuckin’ break from this guy,” hence the two-month hiatus (the show returns on Jan. 18).

The political satirist then lashed out at the president for his ugly response to the wildfires that have ravaged California, decimating entire towns and leaving over 66 people dead as well as hundreds more missing.

“Of course, Trump’s response—you saw that—was to blame the victims, threaten to withhold federal funds,” said Maher. “This is what he does every time there’s a disaster. Wildfires? ‘You mismanaged your forests.’ Mass shooting? ‘You should’ve been armed.’ Hurricane? ‘Your island is very inconveniently located.’ His response to every tragedy is, ‘How can I hurt?’ He is to empathy what food courts are to ambiance.”
