Looking Forward to Your Next Vacation? Save on Air Travel With These Tips

If you’ve ever suspected that it’s more expensive to fly on certain days of the week than others, your hunch is right.

The cheapest days to fly are… drumroll… Tuesday and Wednesday. Fewer people want to fly on those days because they don’t fit the typical Monday-through-Friday work schedule. So, airlines discount tickets on those days slightly.

That’s the short answer. But there’s much more to consider when booking a plane ticket so you’re sure to get the best deal.

Cheapest Days to Fly, Explained

A 2019 study by the travel site CheapAir.com found what every study before it had: You’ll pay less for airfare if you fly midweek.

In some cases, nearly $ 85 less. That’s compared with the most expensive day of the week, Sunday, with Friday coming in second. Again, most people travel over the weekend when they’re off work and the kids are out of school. If you’re willing to fly on less convenient days, you’ll save a few bucks.

And for the record, it doesn’t matter when you actually purchase a ticket. Many travel experts agree there’s no meaningful difference in price based on the day you book.

When to Buy: Aim for the Prime Booking Window

An airplane is drawn by a pencil on a calendar.

Another factor that affects whether you get a bargain on airfare or get hosed is how far out you book your ticket.

The sweet spot is the prime booking window, and it falls between three weeks and four months before your trip. CheapAir.com says fares in this zone are within 5% of their lowest point, and they tend to stay consistent without spiking.

But say you like to plan things way in advance. Booking a ticket more than six months out will cost you — possibly $ 50 more than in the prime window — but the tradeoff is you’ll have lots of flight options to choose from.

On the other hand, there’s rarely any reward for waiting until the last minute. Booking less than two weeks in advance will cost you.

There Is a Season

So with your sights squarely set on the prime booking window, bear in mind this advice about traveling at different times of the year.

If you’ve ever flown home for the holidays, you know this to be true: Winter is the most expensive season to travel. The average price of a domestic ticket during the winter, according to CheapAir.com, is $ 433. Ouch.

The upside? You get to fight your way through extra-crowded airports. Oh, wait…

You can ease the sting of popular winter travel a little by booking about 94 days in advance, which is, on average, the best time to buy in winter.

Spraaang Break, y’all. Oodles of families and college kids take a vacay when school is out for a week in March and April. Beat them all to better fares by flying midweek. Average best time to buy: 84 days before your trip.

Think late in the season. We know, school just got out and you’re ready to escape. But July is the most expensive month of the year to fly, while late August and September harbor some serious deals. Try to book about 99 days out.

Airfare in the fall makes us want to frolic in some autumn leaves!

Fall is shoulder season — the time between peak and off-peak — for many destinations when fewer people in general are traveling. (Yeah, the term doesn’t really make sense to us either.)

There are deals to be had — as long as you avoid Thanksgiving week; 69 days out is the time to book.

Destination Matters

We don’t just mean that it’s cheaper to fly to Phoenix than Dubai. (Although — pro tip — it is.)

CheapAir.com is also here for us on this important question: How far out you should book tickets to different areas of the world? Here’s the breakdown:

  • Canada: 59 days in advance
  • Mexico & Central America: 61 days
  • Caribbean: 76 days
  • South America: 81 days
  • Middle East/Africa: 119 days
  • Asia/Pacific: 90 days
  • Europe: 99 days

Finally — and this has less to do with the cheapest days to fly but everything to do with saving money — don’t overlook alternate airports. Smaller carriers serve regional airports and often offer fares that seem like they’re from a bygone era. $ 55 to Orlando? Hello!

Use this handy list of lesser known airports outside big cities and check for cheaper fares before you book.

Happy travels!

Looking Under the Hood: 14 Years Photographing White Power

Courtesy Anthony Karen

On June 10, 1966, three Klansmen murdered Ben Chester White, a 67-year-old African American farmhand, in Homochitto National Forest, southwestern Mississippi. They had kidnapped White from the nearby town of Natchez, shot him at least 18 times, and thrown his body off of a bridge into the creek below. The FBI believed that the wanton killing was part of a plot to attract Martin Luther King Jr. to Natchez, where the Klan hoped to assassinate him too.

Almost 50 years later, photographer Anthony Karen was standing on the bridge in Homochitto. FBI documents that he had obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests corroborated that this was indeed the site of White’s murder, though Karen could not be certain which bank of the 10-foot-wide creek his body had washed up on to be discovered by a picnicking family in 1966. But there was one cruel lead: the carcass of a poached deer, caught on the right bank.

The 53-year-old Karen’s journey to Homochitto was part of his larger collection of work on the white power movement. Since 2005, he has been photographing hate groups across the United States, from Klansmen in Kentucky to Nazis in Pennsylvania. Unwilling to be cast as a propagandist, he has further investigated the causes and consequences of hate groups, such as in projects documenting the history of a Nazi who discovers that he has Jewish heritage and following the trail of Ku Klux Klan-related crimes during the Civil Rights era, including the murder of Ben Chester White.

Police Are Looking For R. Kelly’s VHS Collection Of Him Engaging With Underage Girls

R. Kelly Back In Court For Aggravated Sexual Abuse Charges

Source: Pool / Getty

In Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly, many of the women interviewed confirmed that he has an extensive VHS collection of him engaging in sexual acts with underage girls. Now, the authorities are looking for those tapes to continue to build cases against Kelly. Prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois are interviewing people close to the Grammy-award winning singer in hopes of finding these tapes, TMZ reports.

After being hit with child pornography charges in 2008 for one of the VHS tapes that surfaced, it was rumored that there were more but they were never discovered.

Besides the 10 counts of felony criminal sexual abuse charges against him, he is being investigated in Illinois for sex trafficking, tax evasion and obstruction of justice. The obstruction of justice accusations stem from suspicions that parties close to him pressured and paid off witnesses to keep them from testifying or cooperating with police. Kelly has two other criminal investigations going on in New York and Atlanta. There’s also his back child support that he was arrested for in March.

After the Lifetime series, Kelly’s world began  to fall apart as more and more charges began to be thrown at him related to him engaging with teenage girls for the last 20 years. Attorney Michael Avenatti submitted a 45-minute video of Kelly with an underage girl back in February. It was later reported that he was being investigated by the FBI for allegedly having teenage girls travel from different states with the intent of sexually assaulting them. Chicago police also informed Detroit police of allegations that he sexually abused a girl there in 2001 when she was 13. This led to Lifetime responding with the follow-up, Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact, which aired May 4th  and hosted by Soledad O’Brien.

Verizon Looking to Sell Tumblr After Destroying It By Removing Adult Content, PornHub Interested in Buying and ‘Restoring It to Its Former Glory’

Late last year, Tumblr announced that it would start banning all adult content.

Late last year was also the last time most people logged into Tumblr.

According to The Wall Street Journal, that Verizon has approached other companies in recent weeks that may be interested in buying Tumblr.

via The Verge:

On Thursday evening, Pornhub VP Corey Price claimed in a statement to BuzzFeed News that his company is “extremely interested” in buying Tumblr and “very much looking forward to one day restoring it to its former glory with NSFW content.” The company did not say whether it has actually made any legitimate offer to Verizon, however.

Price is referring to a major change implemented late last year, when Tumblr took the controversial step of banning porn on its platform. The company has been using AI to detect and automatically block images and videos that contain certain adult content. Existing posts containing porn were made private and are no longer publicly accessible. The move resulted in harsh criticism toward the company and a steep decline in web traffic, but Tumblr has given no indication that it plans to reverse its decision. Pornhub quickly sought to attract those users that Tumblr drove away.Tumblr itself was acquired by Yahoo for $ 1.1 billion in 2013 during the Marissa Mayer era as an attempt to revitalize and steer new, younger users to the sinking internet staple. But Yahoo never really knew what to do with Tumblr, and the micro-blogging site — with its millions of personal blogs and some of the weirdest, best things on the internet — did nothing to reverse Yahoo’s business fortunes.

Verizon finalized its $ 4.5 billion acquisition of Yahoo in 2017, which led to it taking ownership of Tumblr. Tumblr is currently part of Verizon Media Group (formerly Oath), the umbrella brand for digital properties that Verizon ultimately controlled after its two buyouts of AOL and Yahoo. The Journal notes that Verizon’s attempt to offload Tumblr comes as it tries to make the best of its collective media business after a $ 4.6 billion write-down last year, which was essentially an acknowledgement that both deals had been a mistake. Verizon sold one of its Yahoo assets, Flickr, to SmugMug about a year ago. Guru Gowrappan, the executive put in charge of Verizon Media Group last year, later criticized that sell-off as too time-consuming without enough reward.

But publicly, Verizon executives remain committed to the properties despite layoffs that have affected some of the sites and entertainment divisions. “I hope there is no doubt about our commitment to Verizon Media Group and how it fits into our whole strategy,” CEO Hans Vestberg said earlier this week, according to the Journal. Tumblr, it seems, is not necessarily part of that strategy. But now the question becomes whether there’s even a viable buyer for the platform in 2019 that won’t let it slowly wither away.

Listen, we’re all adults here — PornHub stepping in wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Jordyn ‘Likes’ Comment Saying She Came ‘Back Looking Like a Whole Meal’

Jordyn Woods Like Comment Looking Like Whole Meal

Back and better than ever? Jordyn Woods indulged in compliments from her fans as she seemingly tried to put her drama with Tristan Thompson and Khloé Kardashian in the past.

The 21-year-old model “liked” a Wednesday, March 20, Twitter post from one of her loyal followers. “Okay Jordyn comes back looking like a whole meal,” the user captioned a photo of Woods, adding a heart-eye emoji.

Kylie Jenner’s best friend made headlines in February when she was caught cheating with Thompson, 28, at a party. Woods told her side of the story during an interview on Red Table Talk, which was released on March 1. “[There was] no passion, no nothing. He just kissed me. … It was a kiss on the lips,” she claimed. “No tongue. … No making out.”

She went on to deny sleeping with the athlete. “Never a thought, never a consideration, never happened, and never will I,” she said. “And that’s why I’m willing to be put up to the test. Attach me to a lie detector, whatever it is. I need people to know the truth, and more importantly, I need people involved to know the truth.”

Kardashian, 34, slammed Woods on Twitter after the interview’s release. “Why are you lying @jordynwoods ?? If you’re going to try and save yourself by going public, INSTEAD OF CALLING ME PRIVATELY TO APOLOGIZE FIRST, at least be HONEST about your story,” the reality star wrote. “BTW, You ARE the reason my family broke up!”

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star later backtracked, tweeting that “Jordyn is not to be blamed” and her breakup was “Tristan’s fault.”

Woods returned to social media on March 8 when she posted a series of selfies. She captioned the Instagram photos: “If you’re reading this.. it means God has given you another day to wake up and be grateful & better than you were yesterday.”

Butterflies know exactly what they’re looking for in a partner: Themselves

law of attraction

Love is a strange thing. Everyone can come up with at least a brief list of things they find attractive in a mate, but sometimes we find ourselves drawn to people for totally explainable reasons. But the same isn’t necessarily true for other members of the animal kingdom, and butterflies, for example, seem to have streamlined things quite a bit.

Authors of a new research paper published in PLOS took a close look at Colombian butterflies in order to get a better idea of how they choose who to reproduce with. What they found was that when it comes to the search for a mate, butterflies are really just looking for themselves.

Looking to get away? Hit these hotspots before everyone else does

*Books flights immediately*

holiday photography

You don’t need reminding that January is pretty bleak. As we count down the days until payday and try not to think about the cold, we’re also Googling getaways because we need something to look forward to this year – right?

But where should you head off to? Should you opt for a staycation or head to Europe? Go to your favourite place or try somewhere new? Or maybe you want to go that bit further and really chase the sun?

On The Go Tours analysed data from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation 2018 Tourism Highlights Report to find out which countries are growing in popularity as tourist hotspots – and give you some hol-spiration.

So where are we all heading as soon as the need for sun hits?

Romania is the fastest growing destination for UK tourists, with an increase of 638% between 2007 and 2017. Lithuania comes in second with around 115,000 visitors in 2017, followed by Mexico with holidays there racking up around 49 million hashtags on Instagram. If you’re going for the perfect feed, you know where to go.

Other tourist hotspots include Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Morocco.

The original favourites, France and Spain, don’t make the list for fastest growing destinations – but they are still pulling in the crowds with over six million and ten million British tourists visiting respectively.

On The Go Tours Head of Marketing, Hollie Youlden comments: ‘It’s interesting to see the variety of destinations that have made it into the top 20 with our internal consumer data seeing similar trends for UK tourists, with peaks in destinations like Morocco, Greece, and Italy.

‘Europe definitely takes the crown with 70% of the fastest growing destinations being European countries, which given the wonderful variety of locations we have in Europe, and the relatively short travel distances from the UK, may not come as a huge surprise.

‘Having said that, it’s great to see the likes of longer haul destinations in North America, Middle East, Asia and Africa with a large increase in UK tourists, showing people are willing to travel the extra mile for fantastic views, culture and cuisine.’

Date Hotspots For Frequent Travelers Looking For Romance

What exactly is a “frequent flyer dater?” Match, an online dating platform, defines it as someone who mixes business with pleasure while on the road and, apparently, it is becoming increasingly popular.

Match and travel site Localeur have teamed up to provide customers with a list of recommendations provided by locals on which dating hotspots they should hit up while they’re in town or on a business trip.

“Leisure travelers have been the primary source of Localeur’s users for years, but working with Match has allowed us to service the growing needs of business travelers,” Joah Spearman, CEO of Localeur, told Black Enterprise. “By partnering with Match, we’ve been able to bring more value to busy business travelers—whom we’ve deemed “frequent flyer daters”—who don’t want to stop their social lives just because they’re in a new city. This partnership, much like our work with JetBlue Airways, further demonstrates the desire from travelers for more authentic recommendations from locals.”
