‘Space Hulk: Tactics’ Looks to Finally do the Iconic Board Game Justice

Considering how utterly iconic the Space Hulk board game is, it’s so rarely been given the treatment it deserves as a video game. In fact, you might have to look back to the ’90s before you find a gaming adaptation of this beloved classic that could actually be called good for its time. Thankfully, based on what we’ve seen so far, Space Hulk: Tactics might just make it so you don’t have to dust off that mouldy Amiga in your parents’ attic.

Classic Board Gaming

Space Hulk: Tactics aims to be faithful to the board game, so this is still the classic set up of throwing a handful of ludicrously well armoured Space Marine Terminators into a series of tight, cramped corridors where Genestealers can pop out from around the corner at almost any moment.

Though it’s a turn-based game, there’s a real mixture of tension and dread as you see the blips of alien motion getting closer and closer, before revealing themselves to be sprinting alien menaces covered in claws, teeth and freakishly long tongues. They’re the polar opposite of the slow, heavily armoured Terminators that have to inch their way across the map in order to reach safety.

It’s a gloriously lopsided set up, with just five Terminators trying to cover every corner, every doorway, while the Genestealers try to catch them off guard, making full use of their endless stream of bodies to try and overwhelm their prey. There’s always a chance that something will go wrong for the Terminators. In classic turn-based fashion, it’s a percentage game that you’re playing with every attack. Sometimes that means things can go terribly wrong with your weapon jamming or that Plasma Cannon exploding on its first use. It’s pretty brutal at times.

It’s built upon familiar foundations, but Tactics doesn’t stick rigidly to the board game’s rules and introduces just a handful of new ideas to spice up the action and add a little more tactical variation. The flashiest of these is an optional first-person view which is atmospheric and a great way to show off the detail in the game world, but definitely nowhere near as flexible as the fully controllable top-down camera. No, a much bigger deal is adding cards into the mix.

Play Your Cards Right

Every turn gives you a certain number of action points to spend to make your Terminators or Genestealers move, turn and attack, but cards are a separate layer on top of this. You can hold three cards at a time and choose to use them or burn them to create action points for your entire team, with each card having different values for these two options. Burn a card and it adds a few extra points to a pool that can be used to play other cards or let your characters do more in a given turn. You can keep your Terminator firing at a corridor of enemies, have them sprint away from danger, use the psyker abilities on the Librarian again.

Playing card can also be immensely powerful, depending on the situation you face. One card gives your Terminator another behind the scenes dice throw if they would have failed, another gives +1 to all melee rolls, or you can preventing weapon jams and failures for a turn. You build your deck through picking different characters classes for your squad and the Space Marine chapter you want to play as – there’s also a baffling array of visual customisations, if you want.

Of course, things can still go wrong, and in Space Hulk that means they go very wrong indeed. Having just boosted my stalwart Terminator’s melee with a card and backed up to perform a rearguard action, he was immediately clawed to pieces by the next Stealer to come round the corner… I may have ragequit at that point.

Ex-Terminator

For the first time in a Space Hulk video game, you actually get to play as the Genestealers in the campaign. You’ve got the randomised blips spawning and the fast-moving Genestealer to attack with, but there’s also the new card system as well. It’s through playing these cards that Cyanide are adding new types of Stealer into the game, letting you pick a blip you have on the board and boosting their toughness, have them move through vents, and even spawning a Broodlord, which can spawn more Genestealers nearby.

But how do you tell a story when one of the races communicates via psychic screeching? The story is split into two halves, one following the Blood Angels Terminators and the other the following brood of Genestealers that they’re trying to wipe out. The Genestealer story is actually set before the Blood Angels, told from the perspective of the various Terminator parties sent from other Space Marine chapters. So no, there’s no screeching with subtitles, I’m afraid.

The campaign map does look really interesting, as a kind of turn-based metagame in its own right. You move your party through the Space Hulk one section at a time, sometimes encountering events and decisions to make or taking on side battles to hunt for upgrades, all the while keeping an eye on the threat level as you head toward the next main story mission.

Build a Space Hulk

Speaking of missions, Tactics features a fully fledged level designer, stocked with all the same building blocks that you would find in the board game. There’s three different tile sets for Imperial, Ork and Eldar ships, each of which have their own particular quirks, like the Eldar ships having teleporters and Orks having never heard of health and safety. The trick for Cyanide will be in trying to help players make good levels and not just the most appalling meat grinders possible!

Like a Genestealer waiting to claw at your face, Space Hulk: Tactics is just around the corner, and it’s looking really promising. On the one hand, it’s a faithful recreation of the board game’s slow-paced tension, but the cards system adds something new and interesting on top of that, boosting your tactical possibilities and slightly improving your odds of survival.

GEMMA Atkinson showed off her incredible gym-honed body on holiday with boyfriend Gorka Marquez.

The former Emmerdale babe and her Strictly beau made a splash of it in Crete.

Looking as loved up as ever the love birds frolicked on a lilo on the Greek Island.

Gemma, 33, exhibited her impressive curves in a saucy black haltered bikini and thonged bottoms.

And Gorka was clearly a fan of what he saw as he couldn’t keep his hands to himself.

The Spanish stud flirted with his girlfriend of almost a year – splashing her with water and play fighting.

And the handsome pair even interrupted their frolicking to share a sweet kiss aboard the inflatable.

The fit couple looked into each others eyes and smiled as they soaked up the sun on their romantic trip.

Gorka even proved that he was ever the gentleman by holding his lady’s hand and helping her down the treacherous rocks.

Greece clearly has a soft spot in the couple’s heart as it’s their second trip to the country this summer.

Just last month the amorous pair couldn’t keep their hands off each other on a romantic getaway in the Mediterranean country.

The pair are squeezing in some down time before Gorka’s Strictly schedule becomes too hectic.

After meeting on the BBC dance show last year, Gemma and Gorka have been smitten for one another.

He was paired with X Factor champ Alexandra Burke, but fell head over heels for his competition.

Ex-Emmerdale star Gemma now hopes that after finding love on the show they’ll be able to make things last when the series returns this autumn.

Strictly is infamous for its relationship curse, with many couples breaking up after getting close to their dance partner.

But Gemma insists this won’t be the case for her, telling the Sunday People: “With Gorka, I had six months of getting to know him as a friend, that’s what is different.

“I’ve never fallen for a friend before. For us it was a Strictly blessing. We weren’t dancing together and we were both single.

“No one got hurt or trampled on, no one left anybody for anybody else so it was literally a Strictly blessing for me and Gorks.”

Gemma revealed that Gorka first won her heart with a slice of pizza at 2am.

The former Emmerdale star shared the couple’s first drunken selfie on Instagram with her followers and admitted it did not take twinkle-toed Gorka much effort for her to start falling for him.

She wrote: “#tb to mine and @gorka_marquez first night out together!

“Who’d have thought a tipsy taxi ride after the Strictly launch party would lead us to where we are now.

“I’m so glad that on that evening you asked for my phone number, and I’m thankful you got me that much needed 2am pizza, got me back to my hotel and handed me over to the girls safely, and rang me in the morning checking I’d made my train back to Manchester.

“(I hadn’t) but hey! It was fun, and it lead to our friendship which months later, lead to our partnership.

“The rest they say is history and I cannot wait to see what the future holds with you Gorks!”

Good Luck Finding Someone Who Looks at You Like Alexis Ohanian Looks at Victorious Serena Williams

As her husband Alexis Ohanian puts it, tennis star Serena Williams had a “great first day back at the [New York] office” this week as she kicked off her return to the tennis courts with a winning round against Poland’s Magda Linette at the 2018 U.S. Open on Sunday.

We know the Reddit co-founder and father of baby Alexis, Jr. is a supportive husband already, of course. But it doesn’t hurt that his appearance at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to watch Williams play just added to the evidence, giving us more fuel to respect his commitment to seeing his wife succeed. Case in point: an adoring photo of Ohanian spectating on the match that has been making the Twitter rounds. After fans began circulating the image, Ohanian himself retweeted it — because sometimes a photo really is worth a thousand words (or, in the case of Twitter, 280 characters).

Ohanian will have more chances to cheer Williams on this week; on Wednesday, she plays Germany’s Carina Witthöft in the Round of 64. This is Williams’s first time back to the U.S. Open competition since 2016, after which she gave birth to her daughter. At this summer’s Wimbledon tournament, she finished second behind Angelique Kerber. There’s a chance Serena could also go on to play her big sister Venus Williams during this year’s competition, too.

Rose in Good Faith Looks to Put New Spin on Ed Hardy

LOS ANGELES — Most everyone has something to say, whether good or bad, about the Ed Hardy brand. Los Angeles streetwear brand Rose In Good Faith wants to add to the conversation and give people something new to talk about.
The label was tapped to work on a collaboration with the brand, well-known for its tattoo-inspired graphics seen on many a celebrity in the early aughts.
Rose in Good Faith aims for an elevated aesthetic for its Ed Hardy collaboration, which is being produced in downtown Los Angeles.
“You’re going to see a lot of elevation in the applications and the graphics,” said creative director Akiva Alpert, who founded Rose in Good Faith with David Teitelbaum in 2016. “You’re going to see a lot of eccentricities in the way the graphics are constructed, but I think when it comes to the garments themselves, it’s applying body modifications to the garments. It’s the idea of the clothing, the fabric in a sense, becoming a tattoo. We asked how can we push the envelope even further on something that isn’t just taking nostalgia, but actually stands on its own as being even more progressive and edgier than what came before.”

Why are young adults wasting so much food? Study looks at perceptions and food behaviors

Researchers wanted to get a better idea why 18- to 24-year-olds, especially college students, have a higher tendency to waste food, and how their residence type — on or off campus — plays a role. Findings show that during the transitionary time of young adulthood, many of the food management behaviors that might prevent food waste haven’t been learned yet or haven’t been necessary.

Cindy Crawford Looks Stiff and Uncomfortable on Tatler’s September Cover

Does the magazine industry secretly have it in for Cindy Crawford? It’s sure starting to look that way given the fact that over the past four months, both Town & Country and Vogue Turkey have failed to do the modeling legend justice. We know the industry is currently trying to make Kaia Gerber happen, but they sure are giving her mom a hard time. Now it’s Tatler that manages to botch up its shoot with the original 90s supermodel, as she fronts the September 2018 issue looking stiff and uncomfortable in the cover photographed by Yu Tsai and styled by Sophie Goodwin.

Our forum members made their feelings clear immediately. “Still mad about their art direction, but the styling is too much for her. It looks like your typical high-fashion moneyed equestrian, but you’d never think this woman was once one of fashion’s most in-demand models,” said Benn98 the moment the cover struck.

“When I see her name in a magazine thread, my heart still skips a beat, because I remember back when I was crazy about her. This isn’t bad by modern-day Cindy standards – but I’m glad I subscribe, because I might not be convinced by this particular cover shot to spend £4+ on it at the newsstand,” noted tigerrouge.

“Better than her Vogue Turkey cover, but that’s not saying a lot. She just looks uncomfortable in that get-up,” 333101 said.

MON felt the same way. “Reminds me of her Vogue Turkey cover. Nothing special,” he remarked.

“Supermodel Cindy Crawford is still not shining through but it’s not the worst cover she’s ever done,” admitted forum member mepps.

“I love and I admire Cindy, she is one of the very best best best stars of the modeling industry in history. However all her covers when she returned to modeling after having her kids are very underwhelming. She used to be SO freaking good, the poses, the hair, the power in the eyes. Now it’s so safe, boring and she always looks uncomfortable,” slammed Bertrando3.

AW18 Trend Report: All the looks you’ll be wearing this autumn

Autumn trends 2018: it might not feel like it, but it’s time to get ahead and jump on board the new season trend train – here’s our ultimate guide to the hottest key looks to start stocking up on…

Autumn trends 2018

Yes, we know the phrase ‘autumn trends 2018’ isn’t really music to the ears right now. And yes, we know your mind’s probably occupied by summer fashion trends 2018 like crayola brights and how on earth to wear suit shorts. The current weather conditions don’t really have you thinking, ‘MUST buy more Arran knits’. But never has the saying ‘success is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration’ been more apt. The last model stalked off the last Paris Fashion Week AW18 catwalk a while ago. And after traipsing round the four fashion capitals, we’ve filtered all the shows into the best Autumn Winter 2018 trends for you. So come on, fashion fans. Time to put that Ganni sundress down and brace up.  A teeny bit of brow-mopping in the changing rooms and clever summer sales blitzing now and you’ll have your entire autumn/winter wardrobe sorted – while other, less organised beings are still panic-buying bikinis on their way to the airport. Mwah ha ha.

So, what did we learn from the NY/London/Milan/Paris AW18 Fashion Week whirl?

The buzzword of the coming season is ‘protection’ – whether it’s from the mean streets, or just from the elements, the options for cosseting and swathing yourself in layers of coverage are endless. It might not sound that welcome now – but when the chill winds start a-blowing, you’ll see this mega trend in a whole, grateful new light (we promise). Parkas, puffas, blankets, double, even triple coats – if in doubt, it’s all about adding another layer. And we’re starting from the head down. Balaclavas, silk headscarves, beanies, glamorous Little Red Riding Hood style hoods for evening… basically, it’s going to be a really good season for bad hair days. Hurrah! Without further ado, here are the trends to start planning your AW18 wardrobe around.

Scroll on down for all the Autumn Winter 2018 trends to know about…

Autumn trends 2018: Check print

Autumn trends 2018

Her Majesty appearing in Richard Quinn’s frow, Prince Charles’ support of the British Fashion Council, the fashion furore surrounding The Wedding…the royals are on trend as never before. And fashion loves them right back – stiff upper lip style in the form of trad tweeds, plaids and Balmoral-perfect silk headscarves are everywhere. Quinn worked foulards (the classic patterned silk scarf) into crazy layered looks, while Paul Andrew crafted archive foulard prints into chic shirtdresses for his Ferragamo debut.

Autumn trends 2018: Colour blocking

Autumn trends 2018

Designers including Marc Jacobs and Francesco Risso at Marni brought all the joy by showing off their skills as colourists – beautiful, unusual palettes were everywhere, reminding us of some of our favourite artists. Full-on Keith Haring neon at Prada, refreshing David Hockney pastels at Eudon Choi, tonal blocking a la Rothko at Marni and amazing Matisse style primary colour combos at Marc Jacobs.

Autumn trends 2018: 70s fashion

Autumn trends 2018

It’s the decade that won’t die when it comes to recent trends. And the sepia-tinged retro mood continues for autumn. But which 1970s character are you? Roksanda’s uptown girl, Marco de Vincenzo’s flares-wearing preppy or Louis Vuitton’s sporty jersey dress fan? Whichever way you go, remember – it has to be caramel, tan, toffee, tobacco..any colour as long as it’s a variation on camel, basically.

Autumn trends 2018: Boho clothes

Autumn trends 2018

Womens’ rights, LGBTQ rights, anti-sexism, anti-Trump, plastic in the oceans…you name it, we’re feeling strongly about it. Maria Grazia Chiuri has stoked controversy – and sales – with her political slogan t-shirts at Dior. And there was another heavy waft of CND-protest feeling in her AW18 Dior collection – nuclear disarmament symbols, tufted woven-rag knits, flat caps…Elsewhere, Missoni and Peter Pilotto also made a strong case for studenty knits and tie-dye.

Autumn trends 2018: Floral prints

Autumn trends 2018

We all love a floral dress for summer, but designers are amping them up with a dark, dramatic twist for this winter too. Rendered on black backgrounds, flowers look dark and decadent – at Saint Laurent, Anthony Vacarello covered his signature micro Dynasty dresses with flowers including sequinned poppies. Over at Preen and Erdem, there was a more historical mood, with blowsy roses winding over coats and silk dresses.

Autumn fashion trends 2018: Leopard print

Autumn trends 2018

Zebra is galloping into the spotlight as the animalia du jour – see Tom Ford’s OTT red take – and luckily for the Bet Lynch at heart, there’slots of amazing leopard. And there’s a lot happening in the world of furry coats – after Gucci’s recent announcement that they would no longer use real fur, we’re pleased to say that other major luxury houses are following suit. Designer of the moment Claire Waight Keller produced silky, standout leopard coats at Givenchy – and they’re all faux. Hur-roar…

Autumn fashion trends 2018: Hats

Autumn trends 2018

Whether it’s all about drama, a move towards the modest or just being plain toasty warm – covering your head is autumn’s biggest accessory message. Raf Simons set the tone at Calvin Klein during New York Fashion Week with standout knitted balaclavas – watch out for homages galore coming to a high street near you soon. Versace was all about the 1980s-tastic coloured beret, and the large silk headscarf is your best new accessory friend. Your mum will be so pleased.

Autumn trends 2018: Puffer jackets

Autumn trends 2018

‘Protection’ was the buzzword bandied around during the shows – a sense of clothes as urban armour, whether you’re stalking the mean streets, or just battling the elements. Shows like Balenciaga, Maison Margiela and Marni sum up the season’s styling – take a functional, sports-inflected polo, pile on a coat over a jacket, and add a puffa (and then another one)…

Autumn trends 2018: Blanket coats

Autumn trends 2018

Cape lovers – there’s a new update in town. Say hello to the blanket. And it’s not even a ‘blanket coat’ as such – it is quite literally a blanket. They were draped round the girls at shows including Roksanda and Isabel Marant,  for an insouciant take on covering up for the cold. Easy to whip on, easy to take off and use for emergency winter picnics. Just joking – Roksanda’s cashmere would definitely demand a table, not grass.

Autumn trends 2018: Graphic print clothes

Autumn trends 2018

If delicate winter blooms aren’t your thing, there’s a whole other bold, non-pretty pattern trend to make a statement with. Choose from a host of graphic prints with a strong 1980s urban art vibe: Burberry’s graffiti squiggles looked as if they’d been lifted from the side of a New York subway carriage, while Jeremy Scott paid tribute to Lichtenstein cartoons at Moschino and Mary Katrantzou did bold Bauhaus lettering.

Autumn fashion trends 2018: Pajamas

Autumn trends 2018

The perfect antidote to animal print, bold colours and aggressive outerwear – say bonjour to the new AW18 update on robe dressing. Silk pajama suits, flowing belted robe coats and Natacha Ramsay-Levi’s pretty lace-trimmed separates at Chloe. And relax…

Autumn fashion trends 2018: Silver clothes

Autumn trends 2018

Global Bacofoil shortage incoming. That’s right, cool futuristic silver is the metallic to shine in. At MM6, it was head to toe (and wall to wall – the presentation took place in a blinding silver-lined room) – from trenches to boots. At Balmain, it was all about the glamazon that Olivier Rousteng loves so much, dressed in high shine lame. There was good old-fashioned movie star glamour courtesy of Givenchy’s swishy silver beading. Butif all this is making you think ‘Beam me up, Scotty’ – fear not. There are also cool, less ‘Hollywood’ takes on the trend – like the parkas at Marques Almeida and a holographic trench at Sies Marjan.

Autumn fashion trends 2018: Accessories

Autumn trends 2018

Autumn trends 2018

More is more is more. Our favourite kind of season…cowboy boots have been taking Instagram by storm and they’re set to continue as the must-have footwear trend for autumn. In keeping with all the layering going on, even scarves are getting in on the act – Karl Lagerfeld piled different coloured versions round the models’ necks at Chanel, and we are obsessed with Miu Miu’s punky retro knitted scarf-lets (is that a word? We say yes). Also on our wishlist: the giant squashy clutch, the fluffy Muppet bag, OTT earrings…and lastly – the cheap and cheerful banana clip. Splash out on a designer version – or hit the bargain bucket at the local chemist. You’re welcome!

Brett Kavanaugh’s Environmental Record Looks Like Scott Pruitt’s

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Not surprisingly, most of the coverage of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has focused on social issues like abortion, LGBT equality, and contraception.

But while Kavanaugh’s record on those issues is sparse and unclear, his record on economic and environmental issues is as clear as a smog-free day: Judge Kavanaugh is like the Scott Pruitt of the federal judiciary.

This assessment is based on a long string of Kavanaugh’s rulings as a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, most of which rely on the premise that, contrary to prevailing Supreme Court doctrine, administrative agencies have very limited discretion to act in the absence of congressional instructions.

Here Are the Wildest Looks From Paris Couture Week

Laurent Viteur/Getty

PARIS—Twice a year in Paris, the world’s top couture designers, and a handful of haute jewelers, present gems most people could never afford and designs that show just how far you can go with a needle and thread in the name of making a lasting impression—both for better and worse.

Sometimes tacky, and often completely OTT, Couture Week shows both how wrong you can get it with thousands of Swarovski crystals at your disposal or too much satin, as well as sometimes unleashing original visionary design. This week, showcasing fall 2018 designs, revealed both extremes to full effect.

As the July shows proved, big and bold is back, and while some European designers seem to have run out of steam, foreign creatives, like China’s Guo Pei and Japan’s answer to Iris Apfel, Yumi Katsura, stole the show, sending walking bird cages and churches down the runway—in Guo Pei’s case—and bright green kimonos in Katsura’s, even though the last person to wear one in Paris, of note, was Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1930s.

Margot Robbie has responded to claims she looks like Megan from Love Island

JUICY.

Megan Barton Hanson seems to be the girl pretty much everyone wants in the Love Island villa this series.

You may remember that during one episode, Alex (aka Dr Love) referred to Megan as ‘the hottest girl on the planet’ and compared her to Margot Robbie. And it’s true, there’s definitely a resemblance.

But funnily enough, the actress herself saw the clip and has some thoughts.

love island beauty

‘The other night we were watching and I think it was Alex who said that, and we all lost it! We were like, “Oh my god, they know who I am on Love Island!”,’ she recently told Metro.

Side note: we are loving that even Margot Robbie is obsessed with the show.

So what did the star think of the comparison itself?

margot robbie

‘I personally don’t see the resemblance,’ she said. ‘We’d just finished drinking beer and eating crisps and saying, “We’re so disgusting we could never be on Love Island we’re such fatties, they would never let us on”.

‘They all have amazing bodies and they are so gorgeous and always so done up and looking incredible, and then they said [I look like her] and we were like, “Oh my god!”‘

We definitely don’t agree that Margot Robbie isn’t seriously gorgeous herself. Come on now.

On another note, anyone else think it’s a bit weird that she was surprised they knew who she is? You’re an Oscar-nominated actress, girl!

The Duchess is a huge fan of the Spanish high street chain, having recently worn not one, but two £40 dresses at Royal events. She’s previously worn statement jewellery and jackets from Zara too

The Dutch beauty stars on the title’s signature duo of covers for June 2018, serving some serious supermodel realness in the retro-inspired images, captured by photographer Mariana Maltoni with styling from Pedro Sales.

Blac Chyna Looks Hot In Red Fashion Nova Outfit Amidst Pregnancy Rumors

Blac Chyna sure knows how to make an impact. She was spotted in LA yesterday, June 9, wearing a red-hot ensemble. Her figure-hugging outfit made by Fashion Nova embraced her famous curvy figure flawlessly. You can see some pics below.

The skirt is really versatile and besides the red top that it comes paired with it would very well go with a simple T-shirt.

This comes right after she got slammed on her Instagram account for trying to have lighter skin.

‘You look good but different in your outfit u had for King’s graduation,’ one of her followers noted.

Excuse me ☝🏽

A post shared by Blac Chyna (@blacchyna) on

‘Chyna always been a red bone blacks people come in all shades from light to dark,’ someone wrote, and another commenter also said that she looks different (and probably not pregnant at all): ‘Lookin way diff than that shade room post.’

We recently reported that The Shade Room posted some pics where she’s at her son’s graduation, and fans thought that she seemed to have a baby bump.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but she doesn’t seem to have a baby bump in her latest pics where she’s flaunting the red outfit.

🤪

A post shared by Blac Chyna (@blacchyna) on

She hasn’t addressed the rumors, and this is probably because we all know how Chyna likes to stay under the highlight and draw attention with various controversies as much as possible.

She also recently made sure to slam the rumors according to which she and YFN Almighty Jay called it quits.

Why the iPhone X notch design looks better than Android copycats

iPhone X Vs Android

When Apple first introduced the iPhone X, the design was met with its fair share of controversy. Though everyone appreciated the device’s edgeless display, it was hard for many people to wrap their minds around the unseemly notch. Sure, there was no way for Apple to embed the device’s video and Face ID components underneath the display, but many wondered why Apple simply didn’t choose to hide the notch by making the flaps to the left and right of the image sensor black. Instead, Apple all but instructed developers and users to fully embrace the notch.

A week or two after its release, it became overwhelmingly clear that the uproar surrounding the iPhone X notch was overblown. For a vast majority of users, the notch, though perhaps annoying at first, quickly faded into the background and became a non-factor. Before long, we even started seeing a slew of Android handset manufacturers start to copy the iPhone X design, right down to the notch itself. To this point, just a few weeks ago a photo featuring 20 Android handsets with iPhone X-style notch designs began making the rounds.

Black Venture Capitalist Explains What She Looks for When Choosing Who to Invest in

Arlan Hamilton is known as a relentless, “anything is possible” investor in the tech space when it comes to making moves. So far her firm, Backstage Capital, has invested more than $ 4 million in over 80 companies led by underrepresented founders and she recently closed a $ 36 million fund to invest in black female founders, but it hasn’t always been easy. Recently, Hamilton spoke to Quartz’s Leah Fessler as part of Quartz’s How We’ll Win, a yearlong exploration of the fight for gender equality.

Venture Capitalist

Backstage Capital Founder Arlan Hamilton

According to a recent release from Quartz, here are some key takeaways from Hamilton explaining what she looks for in a founder and how they can win with her company.

She looks for people who remind her of herself.

“Would they have done what I did to get here?” she asks, referring to the perseverance it took while cold-calling Silicon Valley investors, sleeping on the San Francisco airport floor at night, and ceaselessly justifying her worth in the face of racism, sexism, and homophobia. “I just refuse to believe there’s any room that any of us do not deserve to be in,” she says.

She prioritizes people who can embrace constructive criticism.

“Taking constructive criticism is really essential, and usually you can evaluate that skill really quickly in a meeting or on a phone call,” she says while admitting it’s something she herself sometimes struggles with. “If someone  can’t handle a 15-minute call without getting super defensive, they’re not going to be able to handle seven years of that, so that’s a big indicator.”

She places a high value on founders who can answer questions intelligently and efficiently.

“I tend to ask a lot of questions if I’m interested in something because I want to learn more and usually I’m learning something for the first time. So, I need founders who can answer many questions without defensiveness,” she says.

Equally important is founders’ disposition toward asking her and her team many questions.

Investing is a long-term partnership, so founders who want to take money without investigating how their relationship with Backstage will function are unlikely to be a good match, she says.

“It’s truly about the founders to me—their passion, drive, and reasoning.”

While it’s fascinating to watch founders interact with their teams, who is on the team is not the most important factor. Hamilton interrogates founders about their motivation for creating the product or service they’re pitching. “Usually you can tell if someone is working on something that’s their own personal pain point, or if they’re working on something that they think they’ll be able to flip in two or three years,” she says. “Flipping is a great business model on its own, and one day I’ll probably have a fund that’s just flippers, but that’s not what [Backstage] is now.”

To hear more from Hamilton, check her out on the Gimlet Media Startup series.

Here Are the Wildest Looks From Paris Fashion Week

Getty/The Daily Beast

PARIS—Inside the dimly lit interiors of the Hotel de Ville, classical music played as Anna Wintour held court, standing in the murky shadows. Lesser mortals waited on benches set between the easels decorating Thom Browne’s Fall/Winter 2018 runway, like an artist’s studio.

A procession of models wearing dog’s heads were drawn by a female painter, while others showed-off Browne’s deconstructed designs that recast the idea of the feminine in this collection that was inspired by Marie Antoinette’s official portraitist, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, a rare female painter who succeeded in an 18th century male-dominated milieu.

Another model wore a bulging plastic sculpture that resembled a woman’s body splitting at the seams, bringing to mind some of the over-sized, provocative women painted by Le Brun from the society of her day.

Patton Oswalt Looks Back at His Late Wife’s Serial-Killer Obsession

Gregg DeGuire/Getty

Michelle McNamara had been obsessed with cold cases since the age of 14, when the murder of a neighbor went unsolved. She eventually became a journalist and blogger, whose True Crime Diary website became sort of a clearinghouse for information about unresolved cases. “Unsolved murders became an obsession,” McNamara has said. “I was a hoarder of ominous and puzzling details.”

“Michelle became interested in these cases for two reasons,” adds her husband, actor/comedian Patton Oswalt: “Because they were cold cases, and because she could see in real time how connectivity was changing and more information was being digitized. So the combination of those two had intriguing potential.”

McNamara first became aware of the man she dubbed the Golden State Killer in 2007. From 1976 until 1986, this psychopath was responsible for 50 sexual assaults and 10 murders, first in the Sacramento area and later in Orange County, California. Also known to police as the East Area Rapist (EAR), he had disappeared from view, his identity a mystery. But his sick legend lived on. So McNamara decided to write a book about him, hoping it would help her discover his identity.

It looks like Prince Philip will be making the royal wedding post-surgery

‘His Royal Highness would like to convey his appreciation for the messages of good wishes he has received’

prince philip

The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to hospital earlier this month, with the royal family releasing a statement to break the news, explaining that the 96-year-old royal was undergoing surgery.

‘His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London this afternoon, for planned surgery on his hip which will take place tomorrow,’ read a statement from Buckingham Palace. ‘Further updates will be issued when appropriate.’

After over a week in King Edward VII’s hospital, Prince Philip was discharged today, waving to the crowds as he was driven away in a Land Rover.

‘His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh left King Edward VII’s Hospital at midday today, following a hip replacement operation last week,’ announced Buckingham Palace in a statement. ‘The Duke will continue his recovery at Windsor.’

The statement continued: ‘His Royal Highness would like to convey his appreciation for the messages of good wishes he has received.’

This is good news for royal fans who were worried that the Duke would not be able to make it to his grandson Prince Harry‘s wedding next month.

Luckily, it looks like Prince Philip will be there in high spirits, recovering in the very wedding venue – Windsor Castle – and expected to use a walking stick or crutches for the royal wedding.

We hope he’s feeling better for the big day!

Louisa Johnson looks incredible in sexy shoot to celebrate her new single

LOUISA Johnson looked incredible as she posed for a sexy shoot to celebrate her new single.

The X Factor queen, who won the talent show in 2015, stunned fans with the sultry cover of her new track YES.

Louisa Johnson looked incredible as she revealed the sexy shots for her new single YES

The 20-year-old rocked what appears to be a triple denim look as she bared her cleavage through two denim jackets in the stunning shots.

Pouting for the camera, the Essex-born performer wears tiny high waisted jeans and bares her long legs while her almost white-blonde hair blows in the wind.

In a second shot, she appears beautifully natural as her barely-there make-up appears glowing.

Louisa shared the artistic shots on social media as she finally revealed her new music to eagerly awaiting fans.

Louisa’s make-up was beautifully natural for the shoot ahead of the single release on March 16

Sharing the single cover on Instagram, she simply captioned the image ‘YES’, along with the date of the release – March 16.

She has been working on new music since her success with Clean Bandit in 2016 with the hit Tears, which went to number five in the Official Singles Chart.

The songstress has sold 1.9 million records in the UK and will be hoping new single YES, featuring US superstar rapper 2 Chainz, will be another hit when it drops this week.

Louisa said: “As soon as I recorded YES I knew it had to be a single. It instantly became my favourite song.”

The Essex-born singer, who was the youngest person to win the X Factor in 2015, appeared to rock a triple denim look

Explaining why it’s taken so long to release her album, she told OK!: “I didn’t want to just bring it out and give it to everyone.

“I wanted to release it in stages, singles, then build it up into an album.

“A good selling album would be great but I don’t want to think to far ahead with that because my priority is making it perfect and relevant to people my age.”

She was just 17 when she won the X Factor – making her the youngest person to take the title in the show’s history.

Last year, The Sun revealed that Louisa had split from her boyfriend of two years Daniel Elliott.

The Blue Wave Is Real, and It Looks Really Big—Provided Democrats Don’t Block It

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Two more districts flipped. In New Hampshire, Democrat Philip Spagnuolo won a county legislative seat by 8 percentage points in a district Donald Trump had carried by 13 points. In Connecticut, Democrat Phil Young won a state legislative seat that Hillary Clinton narrowly carried but that had been held by a Republican for the last 44 years. They make the 38th and 39th districts since Donald Trump’s election that have gone from Republican to Democrat.

So: How confident should Democrats be about all this? I’d say pretty confident, for a bunch of reasons. But let’s stick to five:

1. The generic polling has the Democrats pretty comfortably ahead. It’s been bouncing around—while Democrats have always has the lead, it narrowed in January and February but seems to be opening back up a little now. A CNN poll released Monday had it at 54-38. I should say, though, that the fivethirtyeight average as of Wednesday morning is lower, at 47-39.

All the Best Street Style Looks (So Far!) From Milan Fashion Week

images: Imaxtree

If every fashion month city has its own street style vibe, Milan’s looks can only be described Italian chic. No matter the provenance of the street style star, the outfit always has some special Italiano edge. Think: polished but slightly weird; a little off in the best way. Case in point: street style looks from this week in Milan that include hilarious, intentionally misspelled Gucci letterman jackets, frayed-on-purpose knitwear, and suiting that plays with proportions in all the best ways.

It looks like huge congratulations are in order for Amy Schumer

When did this happen??

empowering female quotes

From the editors of People
Words by Mike Miller and Jodi Gugliemi

Surprise! Amy Schumer and her boyfriend Chris Fischer are married!

The two tied the knot in a private ceremony in Malibu on Tuesday, a source has confirmed to PEOPLE.

Schumer and Fischer exchanged vows in front of about 80 people, including, Jennifer Aniston, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jennifer Lawrence, Larry David and David Spade.

The announcement comes just days after the Trainwreck star and chef made their relationship social media official with a kissing photo on Instagram Sunday.

“Happy Birthday @theellenshow thank you for having us!” the 36-year-old actress wrote alongside a romantic black-and-white picture of the pair sharing a smooch, which was presumably taken during taken during Ellen DeGeneres’ star-studded birthday bash on Saturday.

Relationship rumors began swirling around Schumer and the chef and cookbook author after they were photographed together in November of last year, chatting over a dinner in New York City. Schumer’s rep declined to comment on whether their relationship was romantic at the time.

The pair were most recently spotted together in New York in January, as they arrived at NBC Studios to watch Saturday Night Live, which marked only the second time they had been seen in public together.

Fischer lives on Beetlebung Farm in Martha’s Vineyard, where he grew up and wrote the James Beard Award-winning Beetlebung Farm Cookbook. His restaurant Beach Plum was touted by Esquire magazine in 2013 as a favourite of Barack and Michelle Obama.

Schumer previously split from Ben Hanisch in May of last year. The two were together for over a year and met on a dating app around November 2015.

Here’s What Philadelphia Looks Like After the Eagles’ Super Bowl Victory

Philadelphia Eagles fans went wild after their team made history Sunday night with its first-ever Super Bowl victory.

Eagles fans celebrated the historic win by pouring into the streets to cheer, cry, set off fireworks, scale street poles and break hotel awnings. By Monday morning, plants and street signs were uprooted and cars were flipped over as fans celebrated a win they had waited decades for.

Some observers criticized the fans’ reactions as needlessly destructive. Despite the property damage, though, Philadelphia is still standing.

ENTERTAINMENT DEAL UPDATE:

Here’s What a Luxury Ski Resort Owned by North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Looks Like

North Korea’s abrupt cancellation of a joint cultural event this week leaves only one venue in the country that will host events for next month’s Winter Olympics: Kim Jong Un’s luxury ski resort.

South Korean skiers will begin training Wednesday at North Korea’s Masikryong resort as part of an agreement to spur reconciliation ahead of the Games starting Feb. 9 in South Korea. North Korea on Monday scrapped a joint cultural performance at Mount Kumgang, a resort built while Kim’s father was in power, in a move that revealed underlying tensions between the nations.

“Seeing South Koreans practice at a place he built is a propaganda coup for Kim,” said Lee Su-seok, a North Korea analyst at South Korea’s Institute for National Security Strategy. “Masikryong represents his era, and he is relying on the ski resort rather than the 20-year-old mountain resort to emerge from his father’s shadow.”

North Korea is seeking to capitalize on South Korea’s desire for a peaceful Winter Games as international sanctions over its nuclear arms program further squeeze its finances. Trade with China — North Korea’s main financial backer — shrank by more than half last month, the latest evidence of what Kim earlier this month called the “unprecedented impediments” his country has faced.

Swiss Education

While South Korea currently bans tourists from traveling north, the thaw over the Olympics brings the countries closer to dialogue on restoring lucrative cross-border tours that once brought Kim’s regime millions of dollars a year. The free advertising for his ski resort may also attract more visitors from China, which sends more tourists to North Korea than any other country.

Until a travel ban last year, the number of U.S. visitors was believed to hover at about 1,000 a year. Those with special permission to travel are now advised to draft a will and discuss funeral arrangements.

Kim, a skiing fan who was educated in Switzerland, ordered soldiers to build the Masikryong resort shortly after he took power in 2011. North Korea says it built the resort in just one year, boasting that it would have taken other nations a decade.

North Korea used a loophole on luxury goods in the United Nations Security Council resolution to bring in European-made snowmobiles and other equipment to Masikryong. While the European Union considers ski equipment to be luxury goods, China told a UN panel of experts that skiing was a “popular sport for people.”

Ski Sanctions

Fresh UN sanctions passed last year will make it harder for Kim to maintain the resort, according to Christopher Green, senior adviser on the Korean peninsula at the International Crisis Group in Amsterdam. While China might justify snow plows as necessary for public safety, restrictions on industrial machinery would block sales of a ski lift, Green said.

Masikryong, which means a mountain pass where horses rest, has 10 ski runs, with the longest one stretching as far as 5,100 meters (16,700 feet). A giant electronic screen displays propaganda videos at the bottom of the hills, according to 2015 footage by Singaporean video journalist Aram Pan.

The nearby 11-story hotel, painted in orange, has 120 rooms, an indoor swimming pool, a karaoke bar, a gym and a children’s room with books like “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves,” the footage showed. A shop sells North Korean handbags, and foreigners can use an internet room. TVs in the guest rooms show channels from the U.K., China, Japan, Germany and Russia, Pan said, adding that locals can’t watch them.

The flight to the nearby Kalma Airport from Beijing takes less than two hours. Visitors have so far included Chinese diplomats, Dennis Rodman, a former NBA star who has befriended Kim over several trips to North Korea, and Japanese pro-wrestler-turned-lawmaker Antonio Inoki.

The resort has also seen controversy. Human-rights activists were outraged last year when a team of NBC journalists showed women and children using axes and sticks to clear snow from the bus route into the resort.

Jin Chun-kyu, a South Korean who visited Masikryong in November under a U.S. Green Card, said the resort takes dollars, yuan, yen and euro, as well as North Korean won. He said it costs about $ 100 a day to ski at the resort, which restricts the daily number of visitors to 2,000.

“It’s quite spacious,” said Jin, who visited before the season opened. “You don’t have to wait long to ride a lift.”

The resort has “no problem” as a venue for joint training and practice games, South Korea’s Unification Ministry said by email on Jan. 26 after its inspection team visited the resort. Its slopes and snow are in “fine” condition, while Kalma is well managed, it said.

“Pyeongchang’s Olympic appeal is rubbing off on Masikryong,” said Lee Choong-ki, a professor of tourism at Seoul’s Kyung Hee University. “North Korea is getting more global publicity than it could ever have by spending tons of its own money.”

This Is What the Future of Fashion Tech Looks Like

Whether it’s the latest smartwatch, “smart” wearables, or new portable charging concepts, it feels like we’re constantly inundated with the latest products claiming to revolutionize the way we connect with technology. In the fashion world, we’re generally increasing our tech savvy while on the tech side of the industry, innovations are ever more developed with fashion and style in mind. If you’re already on the forefront of the tech sphere, you might have an idea of what will come next. To find out exactly what the future of fashion tech holds, we went straight to the source of the newest product releases.

CES is a conference produced by the Consumer Technology Association and is at the forefront of innovation in the consumer products space. The conference “has served as the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies for 50 years,” reads the CES website, “the global stage where next-generation innovations are introduced to the marketplace.” So, naturally, this was where we looked for the most exciting developments in fashion tech.

What we saw was a major trend in activewear designed with the technology to monitor data like heart-rate levels during a workout. Whether thanks to an external accessory like Spire or built-in garment features à la Xenoma, workouts will never be the same after these products are introduced to the market. Alongside innovations in activewear, we saw name brands like Kate Spade New York and Fossil introducing smartwatches to their collections, making these wearables chicer than ever, and even a line of purses that come with built-in phone chargers so you never have to worry about carrying a heavy portable with you again. Curious to know what else is in store in the near future? We’re breaking down every cool fashion product we saw at the conference below.

Xenoma’s E-Skin activewear tops come with 14-strain sensor strategically built into the shirt to monitor movement like bending, stretching, and twisting joints, meaning the data it collects is a major step forward from fitness-tracking bracelets. Plus, it’s designed to be machine washable for everyday use. Simply put: Workouts will never be the same.
Easily attached to the sleeves, waistbands, or collars of your garments, this wearable accessory syncs with your mind and body by measuring your breath all day and alerting you to sudden changes.
Sleek design and Italian craftsmanship come together in Smartline Jewelry’s Electio hybrid bracelet. The buttons and LED lights subtly blend into the band while the battery and Bluetooth antenna are tailored to integrate into the design, tracking your health and activity in the chicest way possible. This product hasn’t hit the market just yet, but we’re waiting patiently until the moment we can get one of these stylish bracelets on our wrists.
The Fossil-designed shell features a touchscreen powered by Android Wear 2.0, which keeps track of every facet of daily activity from steps to calories and connects with Android and iPhone devices. In gold and rose gold, the chain-link design has a classic feel.
With a crystal dial and star-studded mother-of-pearl face, Kate Spade New York’s hybrid watch is Bluetooth enabled to track activity and sleep, connecting to your iPhone or Android device.
In a structured design with classic hardware, Mighty Purse’s top-handle bag is a perfect choice for women on the go, featuring a concealed slimline battery to charge your micro-USB smartphone or iPhone. Plus, you can also shop the rest of the portable charging bags, clutches, and pouches in the collection.
While these sneakers’ LED soles catch your eye, their built-in motion sensor works to detect movement. It gathers and analyzes your health data in real time. By connecting to your smartphone and computer, Orphe may turn into a musical instrument and controller as well. Now here’s a sneaker that does it all. Opening Image: Style du Monde

Study Reveals What Success Looks Like in 2018

youngprofessional_original_8791

Back in the day, the definition of success meant something different. In the 1950s, graduating from high school and getting a decent job, getting married and raising a family was most of America’s definition of success.

Things has drastically changes since then, and thanks to a LinkedIn study, we have an idea of what success looks like in 2018.

Researchers on behalf of the job networking website, surveyed professionals about how they think about success, how they feel about it, how they define it and even how they talk about it.

In other words, the researchers sought to answer this question: “Why do you get up and go to work every day?”

Here’s what they found.

1. Say bye bye to the flashy title and hello to skills.

According to a press release sent to EBONY on the study, today’s professional isn’t just in it for the title. 89 percent feel that skills are more important than someone’s job title. “Learning a new skill” is the number one goal of professionals for 2018, according to the study.

2. Flexibility over everything.

It used to be a point in time where we fought hard for the corner office. Well today’s professionals (96%) could care less about having a corner office. In fact, more than one-third (34%) reportedly are willing to take a pay-cut of 10% in exchange for being able to design their own schedule.

3. The age of the side hustle.

According to researchers, two out of five professionals do not list being passionate about what you do professionally as a measure of success. 69 percent reported being in it to simply pay the bills. Living problem-free is a top priority, with 74% of respondents working to not worry about money. 36 percent of respondent reported finding success in pursuing a side hustle or passion project.

4. Options, options, options.

65 percent of Americans say they fear they will miss the opportunity for success if they don’t keep their options open.

Read more on the study’s results, here.

Uh-oh, baby! This is what $94 of unintentionally ordered pizzas looks like

by

Sara McGinnis

posted in Parenting

A party size white tomato broccoli pizza (with sausage and steak added for good measure) was just the beginning of one baby’s recent order.

Thanks to the Slice app, Redditor Austin624 got quite the surprise when he checked his email. Along with his expected messages there was a confirmation for a $ 94 pizza order placed an hour earlier.

Justin called in to try and cancel, but was told the pizzas had already been made.

Curious to know what this shock-faced little one ordered? The button-mashing result was: one small Cuban chicken, one medium Cuban chicken with extra chicken and steak on half, one party size white tomato broccoli pizza with sausage and steak, and one small white tomato and broccoli pizza and one small artichoke pizza.

Justin kept the party size pizza and took the rest in to his work.

Though some commented to say they had doubts a baby could accomplish such an order, other parents were quick to share their own stories of tiny tots taking to modern technology.

“I lived with 2 year old little one for a bit and downloaded a few toddler-friendly apps for her to play with on my iPad,” FoldedDice shared, “She wanted nothing to do with them because she apparently wanted to emulate my behavior with it as closely as possible by using my grown-up apps.

“The kicker was that it only took a few days for her to pick up the multitouch ‘close app’ gesture from watching me do it. I would close my app and open one for her, then she would just do the same thing in reverse and just open other apps at random until she found the same one I’d originally been using.”

Keep an eye on your kidlet the next time they’re supposed to be only FaceTiming with Grandma!

What’t the most trouble your little one has gotten into on a phone?
