These Two Five-Year-Olds Just Schooled Jimmy Kimmel on the Subject of Love

On Wednesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! the late night host embarked on “a mission to educate” the youth of today on the meaning of a certain four-letter word: love.

To do this, he sat down with kindergartners Dean and Arlene to talk about matters of the heart. Having set the scene with a candlelit table and enough roses to put The Bachelorette to shame, Kimmel and the kids discussed their relationship (they don’t have one) and why kissing on TV is gross (it’s the germs). And when he asked the five-year-olds to define love specifically, Arlene gave him a beautiful response. “It’s putting someone’s needs before yours,” she explained, so poignantly that Kimmel seemed to be rendered speechless. “I thought Oprah was off the air,” he joked. “I don’t know how this is happening.”

While Kimmel seemed oddly intent on making the pair fall in love — at one point he produced a very non-scientific gadget called the “Love Meter” to confirm that love was in the air — he only got so far as to get them to admit that the other is “kind of cute.” The burgeoning relationship is likely to have a short shelf life, though, because Arlene a realist. “I’m never going to marry anybody,” she said. “Because it’s kind of disgusting.”

Michael Ealy Just Told Us The Craziest Thing He’s Ever Done For Love And We’re Getting The Perfect Guy Vibes

How can a man so fine be so crazy? That’s what most of us were asking after we saw Michael Ealy in 2015’s The Perfect Guy. But upon the release of his latest film, The Intruder, we’re finding out the actor might have a little bit of stalker in him for real– or at least he did.

We asked the 45-year-old what’s the craziest thing he ever did for love, and out poured a tale of posting up outside of his ex-girlfriend’s house for hours that we didn’t not expect to come out of the mouth of the ever-elusive star who is always so cool, calm, and collected. Granted, this happened during his college days at the University of Maryland, but we’re still intrigued.

Check out the video above for the details on Michael’s stalker days and what he’d do if he ever found himself facing an intruder like in his new flick.

Love Parma Violets? Swizzels is giving away a year’s supply to their biggest fan

Could it be you?

sweets
Credit: Instagram @swizzels_sweets

Think back to the sweets you used to eat as a child. Lovehearts, Fizzers, Drumsticks – they were the party bag heroes! The tuck shop treats! The perfect way to spend your hard-earned pocket money!

And now retro confectionary company Swizzels is giving away a year’s supply of Parma Violets to the person who loves them the most.

If you take the crown as the biggest Parma Violets fan, not only will you have a healthy stash of the purple favourites but you’ll also get a behind-the-scenes tour of the factory in New Mills, Derbyshire, where they’re produced. It’s usually closed to the public, making it even more exciting (and very Willy Wonka).

The company asks: ‘Do you love Parma Violets so much that you have a room dedicated to them? Perhaps you are planning a Parma Violets themed wedding? Or do you simply love anything and everything Parma Violets flavoured?’

Jeremy Dee, managing director of Swizzels added: ‘Parma Violets have been instrumental in the success of Swizzels because of their loyal and dedicated fanbase.

‘As a result of this we want to find and reward the biggest fan as a way of saying thank you whilst celebrating one of Swizzels’ most traditional sweets.’

Fancy your chances? All you have to do is fill out this form and tell Swizzels what makes you the ultimate fan in less than 1,000 words.

If you really want to go for it, you can also upload a picture or a video URL.

You’ve got until 10th June 2019 to enter the competition – plenty of time to make an iMovie video montage of your love for Parma Violets.

Good luck!

Here are some very practical ways to love your body, courtesy of yogi Jessamyn Stanley

Alongside videos demonstrating yoga poses and offering motivational inspo, Jessamyn Stanley’s Instagram features a lot of very sensual photos of herself in various states of undress. Given the way she proudly shows off her fat, gorgeous body to hundreds of thousands of followers on a regular basis, you might assume Stanley is the most confident person in the world. (“Sexualizing my own ass cheeks feels like a very important step in my body liberation journeys,” she writes in a caption on a shot of her backside in a striped yellow swimsuit.)

But the truth is, even this badass, stereotype-smashing yoga instructor—who helped set in motion the larger movement for body inclusivity in the yoga world—still has her own share of body insecurities. “I still struggle with the same body image issues as everyone else,” Stanley tells me. “I really think that I’m addicted to body shaming, and I’ll be in recovery for the rest of my life.”

Her words are a breath of fresh air in a world that, these days, outwardly celebrates the idea of body positivity but has failed to dismantle its sexist, unhealthy beauty standards, and offers few tangible ways to really engage in the practice of self-love (other than buying unnecessary stuff).

Learning to love your body really is a journey that almost everyone needs to go through, and for most of us—even for bold, inspiring wellness leaders like Stanley—it’s an ongoing process. This focus on body-positive wellbeing and the practice of self-love is at the heart of Stanley’s newly launched digital yoga studio, The Underbelly, which is geared toward offering “yoga for the rest of us.” The app guides people into developing a yoga practice through three courses (with delightful names: Air to learn to breathe, Earth to get grounded in basic vinyasa postures, and Fire to turn up the heat). Notably though, her program emphasizes yoga as a means of self-inquiry and self-learning, focusing on the inner emotional benefits instead of the external physical ones.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, I spoke with Stanley about the universal struggle to be at peace with our bodies and real, practical ways to engage in this process of reclaiming and appreciating them.

Bobby Quillard

HelloGiggles: These days, it feels like body positivity has become part of the cultural mainstream. The movement is thriving on social media, and many brands and media outlets are going out of their way to have more body diversity and representation. So why is it still so hard as individuals to love our own bodies in our day-to-day lives?

Jessamyn Stanley: The mainstream body positivity movement has nothing to do with the actual message of body positivity. Body positivity makes the assumption that every human being is perfect at the current moment. Most brands and companies need for us to believe that we are imperfect in order to sell us their products. So while the mainstream body positivity message sounds cute, it doesn’t actually uplift the message that would encourage us to love our bodies on a day-to-day basis.

HG: Do you have any good strategies for getting yourself out of a negative self-talk spiral?

JS: When in doubt, meditate and practice yoga. I mean, but I would say that, right?

HG: In past interviews, you’ve described the nude and semi-nude photos you post on social as being part of your “body reclamation work.” What do you mean by that?

JS: In order to accept the physical body, one must observe it organically. That means naked. The fact that so many of us are afraid to even look at our own naked bodies is a huge part of why we hate our bodies. You have to start with acceptance and work from there.

HG: I’ve heard you say your new yoga studio app, The Underbelly, approaches yoga specifically through the lens of body-positive wellness—not fitness. Why was this distinction important to you when creating the platform?

JS: The fitness bullshit isn’t cutting it anymore—people want to learn about yoga from someone who looks, talks, and lives like them. The Underbelly yoga classes are completely different from other yoga resources—they’re taught by a teacher who swears like a sailor, belches like a frat boy, and who is unapologetically fat, black, and queer.

HG: What does it mean to “take care of your body”? People usually talk about exercise and eating habits. What do you think?

JS: I think the first step of “taking care of your body” is respecting your body. Exercise and eating habits mean absolutely nothing if you fundamentally do not respect your body.

jessamyn stanley
Bobby Quillard

HG: Why did you decide to name your yoga studio The Underbelly?

JS: The Underbelly is named after the softest part of our emotional and spiritual bodies—the part that we fear showing to other people. The Underbelly is what yoga makes us see and accept, and I felt that it summed up so much of what I love about yoga.

HG: Are you a fan of journaling? I noticed your app encourages people to journal after taking a class. Why?

JS: I think journaling is a very helpful tool in any practice of the self. Photo and video journaling played a key role in my yoga journey, and I wanted The Underbelly to include a space in which practitioners could log and share their journeys in a safe space (aka the opposite of Instagram, which has become a somewhat brutal place to log a yoga practice.)

HG: What are some tangible ways to practice loving your body?

JS: Listening to your body is the best way to practice loving your body. Also, say nice things about it. All the time. Any chance you can.

HG: Other than yoga, what’s one go-to self-care practice you use to take care of your mental health?

JS: I turn off social media and read a book instead. It’s a game-changer.

Loni Love Shares How She Feels Being ‘The Darkest, Biggest’ Woman On ‘The Real’

The Real co-host Loni Love sat down with MadameNoire to dish about representation and the challenges she faces being a full-figured, dark-skinned woman on a hit daytime talk show.

Although her co-hosts Jeannie Mai, Adrienne Houghton and Tamera Mowry-Housley are also women of color, Loni noted their differences are why she has to always be mindful of what she says on air.

“Being on a show like The Real, I’m the darkest and I’m the biggest girl,” Love said.

“You have to understand, even though they’re women of color, you have to look at the women of color I’m sitting next to. If there’s a certain subject, there’s a certain way I have to deliver things because if I have this thin Asian chick next to me and I’m barking at her that’s the way it’s going to look to America.”

Loni also noted the improper lighting in the earlier seasons of the talk show, which she says altered her appearance, which made her even more aware of how the audience might react to her comments.

“Even just with lighting on the show, we didn’t have the proper lighting for dark-skinned big women and sometimes you couldn’t even see my face,” she recalled.

“It’s because of that you had to change some things, they take your message a different way, if you don’t look a certain way to them,” Love continued. “I had to try and fix that. It’s gotten a lot better for our show.”

Check out the full conversation with Loni via the video above.

Loni also opened up to ABC Radio about her new boo, businessman James Welsh, who she meet via a dating app. James had no idea she was a famous comedian when they first hooked up.

She shared a cute story about how he reacted once he finally realized she’s famous.

“‘Why are you walking the carpet?’” Love recalls Welsh asking her when they first met at a film premiere. “‘Oh, you have a line in the movie?’ I was like, ‘No I don’t. I just got to walk the carpet.’”

She continues, “[Then we] went to a premiere party. And at the premiere party people from the movie kept coming up to me going, ‘Loni! I love you on The Real …’ And you can see when the first person came he was listening to them. And you could see his face change because he was like, ‘What?’ And then the next person, then the next person, and then it hit him: The Real.”

Chalk it up to the fact that “he’s a man” and “he has his own business” as to why James was clueless about her fame.

“And so, we were talking and when I would mention, ‘Oh I got a comedy show,’ he thought, ‘Oh, it’s like a little open mic or something like that,’” she adds.

“So then, at one point, in the party — he turned he said, ‘I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize you were Loni Love from…,’” she says. “And I thought that was so cool and it was so sweet.”

Nurses Week: ‘A Love Letter to Nurses That Cared for My Dying Mom’

The day we discontinued life support for my mother turned out to be one of the most beautiful days of my life. This is a love letter to the nurses who cared for my mother around the time of her death and all the nurses around the world who are everyday heroes.

My Mom Had Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer

She was staying with me while she completed the second round of chemo. I learned after her death how much she would brag about me to the nurses who cared for her. She was proud of me and that I chose nursing as a career. I didn’t spend time with my mother during her chemo sessions and not because I was too busy–she preferred spending time with her nurses at The Cancer Treatment Center of Philadelphia. At first, it stung but after time in reflection, I understand it completely.

Upon first being diagnosed, my mom fought bravely through surgery and overcame a nasty infection that lasted months. She had a wonderful home care nurse who helped her get into fighting shape. She left her home in North Carolina to have chemo in Philadelphia and came to stay with me. She wore the Cancer Fighter T-shirts and sipped her coffee from the branded mugs. She wanted the world to know that the battle was on, but as the months wore on and her cancer spread it was clear that she was on the losing side.

Ever since I was in nursing school learning about the many roles nurses play in the lives of patients, I knew that I wanted to be a comforter for my mother in her last days. As I prepared myself emotionally for her death I imagined sitting with her at chemo, holding hands. She’d tell me stories about her life and family members long gone. It would be like in the movies and we’d do all the wonderful things people do when a loved one is close to death.

So Much for My End-of-Life Fantasies

She told me not to bother coming to chemo, said she enjoyed spending time with the nurses. What? I felt rejected and soon I became a car service transporting her to and from chemo. For the first few weeks, I was tight and resentful. All I could think was, ‘How can she not let me be there for her during this scary time?’ Then one day I noticed something.

Every time I came to pick her up from chemo she’d have a big smile on her face. The nurses and nursing assistants would have her wrapped in a warm blanket, nice and cozy in her treatment chair. Her table would be full of all her favorite snacks. On the ride home, she would share how she felt listened to and well cared for when she spent time with her nurses. My mom was happy and she wasn’t scared. This was the case every time.

A few weeks later, I received a call from an ICU doctor telling me to get to the hospital ASAP and to call my family together. I don’t remember how I kept it together but I do remember a nurse holding me up when I could barely stand. She was a complete stranger who held me close as I soaked her uniform with tears.

I Want to Take a Moment to Say, “Thank You”

I appreciate you for caring for my mother, bathing her, touching and comforting her when I couldn’t. I’m grateful to those of you who whispered in her ear and assured her that all is well. As a nurse, I’ve had the honor of being with many people during their final minutes. I’ve always appreciated and respected those sacred moments. I believe the universe paid the favor back to my family by surrounding her with superb nurses and caregivers.

You helped to keep her alive long enough for all my brothers and sisters to be present on her last day. My mother was there for each of us as we took our first breaths and we were there for her as she took her last. It was a beautiful death.

May 6—12th is National Nurses Week. Nurses are your friends, neighbors, your sisters, or brothers. You may recognize them in their scrubs or even business attire but what you won’t see is the invisible capes they wear. Nurses are your everyday superheroes. Next time you see a nurse, acknowledge them for the lives they touch and thank them for their service. Happy Nurses’ Week!

Best beaches for people who love to surf

Ever since people began standing on boards in the ocean, surfing has grown into one of the biggest adventure sports in the world. The best thing about it is all you need is a board and beach! Not everywhere in the world with a beach is great for surfing, but these are the best.

Pantin, Spain

This beach is one of the most famous for people who surf outside of Asia and the Americas. It has held the Pantin Classic Pro since 1988, and its rocky bottom increases the difficulty. The beach is a spot for experienced surfers, but one that must make it onto your bucket list if you love your thrills to go along with your surfing spills.

Pantin, Spain

Bingin Beach, Bali

It’s not all about the surfing when you go to an exotic location, and some of your time will be spent relaxing. Bingin Beach in Bali is a great place to both surf and relax as it’s a nice quiet beach with plenty of breaking waves. You’ll be surfing right over the reef, so when the tide is high make sure to look down below for some stunning views.

Newcastle, Australia

The Gold Coast is perhaps one of the most famous surfing hotspots in Australia, but head to Newcastle if you’d like great waves with less of the crowds. There are several beaches along the coastline in Newcastle, and each one comes with its own set of unique conditions.

If you want an all-year-round challenge, then Newcastle is really the place for you. There’s the added bonus of cheap accommodation that typically won’t set you back much more than $ 25 per night. Once you’re done in the water, there’s plenty to see in this historic Australian city to add to the memories.

Pipa, Brazil

Want to head somewhere that has world-class waves but none of the backpackers getting in the way? Pipa in Northern Brazil is perfect for keen surfers who just want to spend time with their board and the water.

You won’t have to worry about battling for waves here, and the great thing is once you’re done surfing the chilled out town is just 10 minutes by foot away. Beginners and experts will have fun here and if you keep your eyes peeled you just might spot a dolphin or two looking to join you.

Pipa, Brazil

Weligama, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has become a hotspot for surfers in recent years. It’s easy to see why when you get there as the cost is cheap and the waves are ideal for just about everyone. Beginners can have great fun closer to the beach, while out to sea there are some monster waves for experts. If you’re looking to brush up on your skills, you can take on the smaller waves yourself, or get some tips from one of the 500 surfing schools along the beach.

If you’ve been looking for a new surfing spot, then check out these places dotted all over the world. They offer something for everyone, and you won’t be disappointed by the surrounding areas once you get there.

Remy Ma Turns Herself in For The Alleged Assault of Love & Hip-Hop Co-Star

Remy Ma Takes Over 92Q For A Day

Source: Arturo Holmes / @ArtuGraphiq

Well, it could be a wrap for Remy Ma.

The rapper, who is not only a new mother, but is currently on probation, turned herself into New York City police Wednesday. This comes after reports surfaced that she punched Brittney Taylor at a concert last month.

The pair previously appeared together on the New York version of Love & Hip-Hop. Taylor, who no longer appears on the show, claimed Remy punched her in her right eye while backstage at the Pretty Lou Benefit Concert at Irving Plaza back on April 16th. Taylor said the argument had something to do with a member of Remy’s family.

Remy surrendered to police with her lawyer. Taylor is also planning to file a civil lawsuit against Remy, requesting cops preserve all evidence of the alleged assault, including surveillance footage.

If you’re unfamiliar with Remy’s rap sheet, she previously served six years in jail for shooting a friend in 2007 in a dispute over cash. Her probation was scheduled to end in August.

Loni Love Swears By These Three Plus-Size Fashion Lines

Source: Leon Bennett / Getty

Plus-size fashion has come a long way, according to Loni Love. The Emmy award-winning host opened up about her fashion journey over the years and some of her favorite curvy girl clothing lines.

“It has changed tremendously,” Loni said about the plus-size fashion game. “When I first started doing The Real, fashion for plus-size women was like at an all time low. It was just duvet covers and a belt,” she explained. “Now it’s so much better. I get sent stuff all the time from all over the world.”

Loni learned how to dress for her body size, which helped her tremendously.

“My waist is getting a little thinner, I have a really big butt, so I accentuate. I wear straight skirts instead of a-line skirts. Understand your body type and then you can dress appropriately.”

Another key to Loni’s rising fashion sense. “Alter things,” she said confidently. As for her favorite brands, Loni swears by Eloquii and Ashley Stewart, who she says is “getting much better.” La La has a really good line.” And, like the rest of us, loves Asos.

“Asos is doing a plus-size line and it’s affordable. I like to, to pitch stuff that’s affordable to women. Maybe $ 60 is a bit, but if you save your money and you know, you can spend $ 60 and look good. I don’t usually wear anything on his show over $ 100 bucks. I try to stay under, yeah. Under a hundred bucks.”

Amazon Fashion Takes All the Fun Out of Clothes Shopping—and Customers Love It

Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast/Photo by Getty

Last Sunday morning, I woke up to a message in my friends’ group chat with a link to the Saturday Night Live skit “Fashion Coward.” It was a parody commercial for a store that caters to people who hate shopping. At Fashion Coward, customers can easily buy “clothes that suggest the general idea of a person.”

Racks are stocked with “brown sweaters, navy shirts, pants for the leg, and one black dress that says, ‘Keep it moving.’” The joke’s punchline is “It’s just Ann Taylor,” an easy jab at the much-maligned chain of business-casual basics.

But Ann Taylor has some competition in Amazon, where women flock to purchase utilitarian, good-enough clothing with as much passion as they would buying a new toilet brush.

Elucidation of functional mechanism of ‘love hormone,’ oxytocin, at molecular level

Oxytocin is essential in activities of the social brain such as trust and love and in maternal bonding behaviors. It is produced in the brain and secreted into the circulation. Here, by analyzing maternal behaviors of RAGE gene-manipulated mice, oxytocin was found to be transported back to the brain, crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB), an extremely effective barrier, by binding to the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) on capillary endothelial cells of the BBB.

Link Love: Two Women on Going Grey

Alyson Walsh of That’s Not My Age has been documenting her process of transitioning to grey hair for a while now. I particularly liked what she said in her latest blog post on the subject:

“Part of the fear of going grey when you’re over-50, is that the change (of hair colour) will make you look older. I know I look my age and I’m happy with that. With age, comes self-acceptance and increased confidence. Admittedly, there are times when my hair is tied back and I catch my make-up-less-self in the mirror and get a bit of a shock. But I can always usher in the blusher. The reality of this grey-naissance is that I don’t feel older. I feel authentic. I feel better.”

Emma Beddington, who has alopecia universalis (an auto-immune condition where the body views hair as an intruder), switched out her usual auburn wig for a silver grey one, and found that going grey stirred up unexpected emotions:

“I thought this grey business would be a lark, but it wasn’t, actually. It poked at spots I didn’t know were tender and awoke a desire to look nice I had long squashed down. I was sceptical of the much-documented drama of hair ‘transition’ I explored online, silently judging the ‘brave’ and ‘not for the faint-hearted’ narrative grey positivity seems to inspire. This week has taught me I was wrong. Confronting the reality of a physical self you hide or ignore is big stuff, it transpires, and oddly exposing. Theresa has forced me to accept that I am not just a disembodied brain in a padded gilet. But now what? Grey is anything but giving up: it’s hopeful but it’s also challenging.”

Fab Links from Our Members

Robin Givhan’s point about the perjorative use of ‘old lady’ to describe unflattering clothes completely resonated with Shevia: “Indeed, for each silver-haired model with sharp cheekbones and a long, lean body that designers put on the runway or venerate in an advertising campaign or on the red carpet, they articulate countless cautions against ‘old lady’ style, or ensembles looking too ‘mother-of-the-bride’ or ‘mumsy’ — all of which land like a thousand paper cuts.”

UmmLila wanted to share this article about public figures receiving advice on how to be appropriately dressed for the occasions they appear at.

Runcarla thinks it’s pretty cool when celebrities ‘thrift’, and particularly interesting that vintage maternity wear from the late ’50s and ’60s seems apropos.

Following our recent conversation about leggings, kkards thinks Vanessa Friedman has done a great job of laying out the leggings debate as a generation shift. This paragraph in particular spoke to her: “The truth is, it’s possible leggings may be simply standing in for those other issues. One of the great gotchas of fashion is that what may appear superficial or unimportant (leggings!) is, in fact, representative of a more complicated, harder to express reality (identity). This is what gives clothes their power.”

Thinking about identity, Vildy enjoyed this article on leather jackets for guys who aren’t sure about leather jackets.

Recently unfrumped has been feeling inspired by Jamie-Lee of Mademoiselle and Alyssa Beltempo of msbeltempo: “Both actually for buying less. I am continuing my very slow wardrobe editing and I need repeated reminders for focus and versatility (non- imaginary). Most of it relates to my work wardrobe because that gets over expanded as I feel ‘justified’, but in general having things that aren’t getting enough wear for the space they occupy.”

Ben Foden confesses he’ll always love ex-wife Una Healy and regrets cheating on her in Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins

BEN Foden as admitted he’ll always love his ex-wife Una Healy and regrets cheating on her in candid admission on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

The rugby ace, who announced his divorce from Una on dating app Bumble last August, is in a new relationship with gym bunny Miriam Murphy.

Channel 4

Ben Foden as admitted he’ll always love his ex-wife Una Healy and regrets cheating on her in candid admission on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins[/caption]

Speaking on tonight’s Stand Up To Cancer special on Channel 4, Ben admitted: “My life’s a bit of a mess. I’ll always love Una. She’s my first love and the mother of my kids. I never meant to hurt her in the way I did.

“I think it’s quite appropriate to do a course like this to put some perspective on everything.”

Love rat Ben previously insisted his infidelity was not the only reason for their divorce.

The sportsman and the pop star announced their split last summer amid claims that Foden had cheated on his wife during her second pregnancy.

However, Foden has confirmed that he was unfaithful.

And he claimed he deserves all the negative publicity, saying: “at the moment anything that’s published about me is never very good and pretty rightly so because I was the one who committed adultery.”

In an interview with the Guardian, he revealed: “At the same time, it wasn’t the only reason for our divorce to go through.

“It’s not ideal, but we’re very amicable, we’re getting through it, we’re not the first people in the world to get divorced. We’ve got two little kids we adore.”

Foden, 33, tied the knot with former Saturdays star Una in Ireland in 2012. The pair have two children, daughter Aoife Belle, six and Tadhg, four.

The family had planned to relocate to the US last autumn as Foden had signed for New York team Rugby United.

Yet their plans were left in tatters after Una discovered his infidelity.

Foden continued with the move while Una has remained behind, dividing her time between the UK and Ireland.

The flame-haired stunner has also found love again with Irish hurling star David Breen. After initially keeping their romance under wraps, she recently took to social media to share snaps of them together.

Meanwhile, Foden is enjoying career success in America, but he admitted the move stateside has been difficult because he misses his family.

He explained: “It’s hard because I’m away from my son and daughter.

Una is now dating David Breen and the pair recently enjoyed a sunshine break in Mauritius

“But I know they’re in a great and loving environment with Una because she’s a great mum. We never argue about that.”

The sports star was left red-faced last year when it emerged he had set up a profile on dating app Bumble just weeks after his split from Una.

Yet he has now revealed that his estranged wife actually set up the account with him, explaining: “I picked up Una from the airport a couple of weeks after we’d first been here, and we were sort of joking about dating.

“So I loaded up Bumble, and we did the profile together, joking around.

“And then I realised something dodgy was going on with it and the next day it was all over the paper.

“It’s not ideal, but at least I can laugh about it and especially so with Una. If she hadn’t known about it I can see it would have been a bit of a knife in the back.

“But we were messing around, so we can laugh and she can call me a bit of an idiot.”

Remembering ‘10 Things I Hate About You’: The Movie That Made Us Fall in Love With Heath Ledger

Alamy

Your favorite classic teen movie says a lot about you. It’s a statement about your preferred aesthetics and your taste level. One single reference tells new friends and first dates everything they need to know, from how popular you were in high school to how likely you are to currently own a Cher Horowitz-style cropped plaid skirt suit. Clueless fans have a CliffsNotes understanding of the classics and a deep-seated belief in the transformative powers of a makeover (they love Queer Eye). Superbad aficionados think they’re a lot funnier than they are, and secretly wonder if #MeToo has gone too far. John Hughes diehards have unhealthy romantic relationships, The Craft enthusiasts live in Bushwick, and Cruel Intentions stans have FetLife accounts and ship Cersei and Jaime Lannister.

And then there’s 10 Things I Hate About You. Twenty years later, this movie is still by far the best classic teen flick to associate yourself with. It’s less basic than Mean Girls, more highbrow than Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and isn’t totally cringeworthy by 2019 standards (see: Grease, Sixteen Candles). Identifying with 10 Things I Hate About You tells the world that you also know who The Raincoats are, and that you can appreciate the rarified delights of a high school rom-com that culminates in a Shakespearean sonnet. Just don’t be that guy who feels the need to point out that Kat’s final homework assignment isn’t in iambic pentameter.

The iconic 1999 adaptation takes Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and gives it a riot grrrl twist. The clunky plot finds two Seattle sisters, Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) and Katarina Stratford (Julia Stiles), being wooed, respectively, by a very fresh-faced Joseph Gordon-Levitt and breakout star Heath Ledger. Kat is an outspoken feminist and literal ball-buster, which apparently makes her the most undateable senior at Padua High, despite the fact that she is literally Julia Stiles and a thousand times cooler than the “unwashed miscreants” she goes to school with. The Stratford sisters’ comically-overprotective dad (Larry Miller) decrees that the boy-crazy Bianca can only date when Kat does. Gordon-Levitt’s Cameron convinces the most popular and odious boy in school (Andrew Keegan) to pay Ledger’s Patrick Verona to take Kat out, at which point Cameron plans to swoop in and romance Bianca himself.

Sony Pictures Picks Up ‘Hair Love’ Film About Black Father Doing Daughter’s Hair

Mom and Daughter in a Home

Source: RichLegg / Getty

After raising money for two years, retired NFL player Matthew Cherry’s short-film Hair Love has been picked up by Sony Pictures, Deadline reports. The animated short film shows a black father who is learning how to do his daughter’s head of thick curls for the first time.

Cherry’s Kickstarter fundraising goal for the film was set at $ 75,000 and he went well over his goal, raising $ 284,058.

“In the past year, it has been very clear that audiences have been yearning to see fresh stories that are universal and culturally authentic,” Sony Animation President Kristine Belson said. “Hair Love is a wonderful father-daughter story and we are proud to nurture talented young filmmakers like Matthew who are breaking new ground.”

Cherry, who also executive-produced Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, is happy to see his film come into fruition to help increase representation of African-American characters in animated films.

“It was important to get this story out there and we are so grateful to Sony Pictures Animation for their generous support in helping us make that happen,” Cherry said. “They have championed it from its early stages and we cannot wait to share the project with the world.”

Hair Love will be released later this year. There will also be an accompanying children’s book that will be released May 14th and is available for pre-order.

Owen Could Be in Another Love Triangle on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Another love triangle? Owen (Kevin McKidd) might be single, but Teddy (Kim Raver) is getting closer to the end of her pregnancy on the Thursday, March 21, episode of Grey’s Anatomy, and that could all change — but not if Koracick (Greg Germann) has anything to say about it.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Behind-the-Scenes Drama

In fact, things between all three of them got real pretty quickly when Teddy ended up having early contractions and missed her birth class that all three of them were supposed to attend together. Owen rushed to be by Teddy’s side while she was stuck in the hospital bed with an insufficient cervix, and he even got into a hospital bed to be by her side so she wouldn’t feel alone.

Teddy admitted that she was scared to be faced with a newborn, so Owen passed the time by talking about what an awesome mom she would be. It would have been an adorable moment… if Koracick hadn’t walked in and interrupted them just in time. But before Owen left, Koracick warned him that if he was trying to make a play for Teddy, he better be looking for a fight.

“I will not lie down. I will not walk away. I will fight for her,” Koracick said. “And that will bring on a whole lot of drama and a whole lot of pain for a woman you claim you want to be happy.”

Don’t Bite the Hand That Feeds You

Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is busy working on her next big medical development, but DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) is still reeling from the fact that his father’s experiment is officially over. And being that Alex (Justin Chambers) was the one who pulled the plug on it, there was some serious tension between them, and an argument involving a patient meant that Alex threw DeLuca off the case, and the patient and her mother refused to have the surgery.

Shocking TV Exits

Even though DeLuca came back and was able to talk her into having the surgery, it didn’t change anything for Alex. He told DeLuca to get out of the OR, but then he imparted a little wisdom: He shouldn’t shut Meredith out because of what’s going on with his father, because as someone who’s had issues with his parents himself, it never pays to bite the hand that feeds you.

When Meredith made it over to DeLuca’s house after work, he had dinner and an apology ready after he had spent the day ignoring her while he dealt with his feelings about his father.

“I needed a minute,” he admitted. “But now I need you.”

Meanwhile, Alex got home from work himself to find Jo (Camilla Luddington) in bed after getting home from Pittsburgh, where she went to meet her mom in person for the first time ever, but she was already asleep, or so Alex thought. Really, she was awake — and in tears.

Amelia and Link Are Heating Up

Now that Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Link (Chris Carmack) are back from their conference, things are super awkward between them since they hooked up — so awkward that everyone else around the hospital is starting to pick up on it, including Maggie (Kelly McCreary).

But Amelia didn’t really want to talk about it, and the more Link pushed, the less interested she was. But just when he finally broke the ice, the surgery they were working on together quickly went downhill, and their patient was paralyzed.

Everything Ellen Pompeo Has Said About How Long She’ll Stay on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

At the end of the day, they were able to meet up in one of the private rooms that Maggie is using for her experiment on healing properties. Despite any awkwardness they might have faced during the day (and the heartbreaking outcome of the surgery they worked on together), things between them are heating up all over again.

Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.

Jorah Mormont Explains Why He’s ‘Basically Supportive’ of Jon Snow and Daenerys’s Love

If there’s anyone who’s been a figure of unrequited love on Game of Thrones, it’s been Ser Jorah Mormont, who will do anything for his queen, Daenerys Targaryen, despite seeing her romantic interludes with others.

So it’s fairly significant that the Westerosi knight (or rather, Iain Glen, the actor who plays Jorah) has weighed in favorably on her latest romance with none other than Jon Snow.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Glen shared that he thinks that Jorah has now made peace with never being seen as a viable romantic partner for Daenerys.

“I don’t know what people perceive,” Glen said. “But in my mind, there was a significant shift when he lost her love and made this journey to try and win it back; once he won her favor again and was in her orbit. Of course, there has always been a profound love there but him wanting a reciprocal physical love has gone and he was just happy to be with her.”

He also said that he believes that Jorah generally approves of Daenerys and Jon being together.

“He believes in Jon Snow like a lot of people do and has gotten to know him in their travels together last season,” he said. “He thinks he’s a good match with Daenerys best interests in mind. It’s a complicated emotion, but I think he feels that they would be a good unification and he’s basically supportive.”

With Jorah’s blessing, here’s to watching how Jon and Daeny’s romance plays out in the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, which premieres on April 14.

These are the clothes brands Prince George and Princess Charlotte love

Your complete guide to Royal baby fashion

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge iPads

With the new Royal baby set to be born any day now, we can imagine the Duchess of Cambridge has already stocked up on lots of cute children’s clothes, and there’s no doubt she will be returning to some of her favourite brands that she’s shopped for Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Kate has famously always opted for traditional clothes, including lots of shorts for Prince George (there is a good reason for both of these, if you follow those links), and the general public loves it, with many items selling out as soon as the Royal children wear them (what Kate effect?).

So here’s your ultimate guide of the baby and children’s fashion brands Kate and William love the most, and where you can shop them.

G.H. Hurt & Son

The family owned brand saw a huge spike in visits to their site (and by huge, we mean 100,000 in less than 24 hours) when Princess Charlotte was presented to the world outside the Lindo Wing, swaddled in its traditional knitted shawl.

The Spanish kidswear brand won Kate over with its pretty embroidered designs, and both Princess Charlotte and Prince George have a few of the brand’s clothes hanging in their Royal wardrobes. Breaking Down My Walls: How I Learned That Unconditional Love Means A Lot Of Forgiveness

Who doesn’t love days like these?

Source: Dean Mitchell / Getty

Conditions exist in every facet of life. When we leave our overpriced city apartments, we dress for the appropriate weather conditions. There’s conditions when it comes to keeping your job. You gotta show up on time, do the work, all that good stuff.

There are conditions in relationships, too. But it’s not something we talk about enough in our relationships with our family, friends, or significant others.

I’ve had several instances where I’ve felt loved under conditions and when I, too, have loved people conditionally. Whenever I realized this, I knew it was because I wanted to control the outcome. I wanted things to be done my way, I wanted to be right, I wanted to ‘win.’ Over the years, I learned that this thought process was problematic, and I wanted to understand where this mindset stemmed from. I realized that forgiveness, transparency and self-awareness were needed to understand. Were these conditions reasonable and realistic? Or were the conditions set as a means of control?

My introduction to conditions began with my interactions with my parents, as an adult child. If you have strict African parents like mine, you know there will always be reminders that you aren’t doing enough. They keep account of all the times you messed up since the day you were conceived. Around my mid twenties, I had a serious conversation with my Pops about unconditional love.

We had gotten into an argument because he had wanted to put this tracker on my phone. Needless to say, I was adamantly against this and made this known. My dad’s go-to response was to give me the silent treatment for three weeks. It was then that I finally decided to have an honest conversation about his response.

My heart was racing, but I had him on the phone, and decided it was time to really be transparent with him about his communication. I said to him:“If there’s something I can do to make you stop loving me, especially something small, then your love comes with conditions. We can agree to disagree without you shutting me out; that’s not love, and that’s not how we express love. As a parent, you love me unconditionally, regardless of whether you agree with everything I decide to do.”

Needless to say, it was a game changing conversation, and allowed us to really dialogue about where the ‘conditions’ were coming from.

I started to examine my friendships. In my opinion, best friends have an unspoken  commitment to working through difficult situations, no matter what because the love is genuine. I’ve been blessed to be able to really fight through some real stuff in order to mend things with those closest to me. It has not been easy; both parties had to forgive and let go in order to move forward. It’s in those moments, that I knew they were in this thing for life.

On that same note, there are friendships and romantic relationships that faded or were downright ruined because of the tally system. It does us no good to keep score of who forgives who the most, or to focus on winning an argument versus coming to a resolution. There are times when I had to take the loss and come to terms with the part I played in the downfall.

When it comes to romantic relationships, I don’t think you can truly love a partner with conditions. The idea is that unless you’re protecting yourself from being harmed physically/emotionally, what are these conditions in place for? I think when we think about long term commitments like marriage, we don’t assume our partners will make mistakes. But we will, because we’re human. In order for us to grow and become more self aware, thoughtful people, we have to trust and hope that our significant other gives us the benefit of the doubt and forgives. Because ultimately, with pre-existing conditions, it doesn’t leave much room for redemption.

The problem with conditional relationships is it sets stipulations on what unconditional love and regard for another person should look like. It posits that forgiveness and the potential to move forward does not exist and never was a possibility between friends, lovers and family members.

There are exceptions to this, of course. It’s important to have boundaries and to advocate for them the moment they are broken. But overall, giving the benefit of the doubt and allowing a potential change to occur shows a sign of emotional maturity.

If you’re keeping receipts, your intentions are never to forgive. It’s to use the gathering of info at the right opportunity. That’s not okay.

You can’t control people, you can only control yourself. You always owe it to yourself to set the tone for how you want to be treated at the beginning. That way there is no confusion. In any relationships, you should know when to call it quits, and when to keep fighting. If this person means everything to you, there are few stipulations that will stop you from mending something that is broken. It’s all about intentions, and something to keep in mind when navigating emotional bonds and communicating with the people that we care for.

In attendance were a few of her RHOA co-stars, including Cynthia Bailey, Marlo Hampton, and new moms Shamea Morton and Kenya Moore. Neither Williams nor McKinley have posted pictures of the event, but by the looks of things it seemed like a fabulous affair.

It’s been an amazing year for Williams who met McKinley in 2018 and succumbed to the rapture of love. Now the two are anticipating their little one, while remaining in the bliss of celebrating their engagement.

But the couple also has more to celebrate. According to The Jasmine Brand, Bravo cameras will document the arrival of their little one with a spinoff to RHOA.

No word on when the special will begin to air, it’s really all up to baby PJ!

The Cute Way Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Kids Helped Celebrate Her 40th Birthday

Time to celebrate! Jennifer Love Hewitt’s kids helped the actress ring in her 40th birthday in a super sweet way.

“This made my heart explode with love and gratitude this morning!” the 9-1-1 star wrote on Instagram on Thursday, February 21. “My kids made me a cake and crown for the big day! They had help from a beautiful bday fairy @theshavs and I am super grateful.”

In the photo, Hewitt showed off a two-tier cake covered in chocolate frosting, rainbow sprinkles and candles. Next to the sweet treat was a white crown covered in stickers, sequins and pom-poms. The crafted crown tied together in the back with a striped ribbon.

The Golden Globe nominee, who shares Autumn, 5, and Atticus, 3, with her husband, Brian Hallisay, sported the homemade accessory on her Instagram Story that same day in a selfie.

Hewitt posted another selfie that same morning, writing, “This is 40! Today I am joyful, lucky, healthy, I have the greatest kids, the most amazing husband, incredible friends, a job I love and deep gratitude for this beautiful thing called life! I am 40. I feel 22. Today is my 30th birthday as an actress and Californian girl. Wow.”

The singer told Us Weekly exclusively in August 2018 that she has a hard time spending time apart from her little ones when she’s working on the 9-1-1 set.

“[It is] much tougher on me. I just miss them,” she said at the time. “I’m just not used to being away for all those hours, so I just miss them.”

She added: “My daughter thinks that work is the coolest thing she’s ever seen. She loves the craft service truck. My son got to run around the lot, like, go into ‘New York,’ go up and down the stairs and take a picture in front of the police station, which he thought was super cool. So, they’re doing great. It’s just me who’s a sap in my trailer, like, ‘Why can’t I see my babies?’”

Lauren London And Nipsey Hussle Discuss Their “Building” Love Story & London Sacrificing Her Career For Her Child

Lauren London and Nipsey Hussle GQ Shoot

Source: Awol Erizku / GQ

Last month, Lauren London and Nipsey Hustle had folks scratching their heads wondering if the two had gotten engaged. But the photos that leaked actually came from another place. They were behind the scenes images from the couple’s beautiful photo shoot and piece for GQ.

The couple traveled Slauson Avenue, a Black neighborhood in Crenshaw California—sometimes on a White horseback documenting their flyness and their coupledom.

London and Hussle were photographed by Awok Erizku, the same photographer who captured Beyoncé’s pregnancy announcement and the reveal of her twins, shortly after they were born. The photo went on to become the most liked photo on Instagram.

Erizku’s other popular works include Girl With a Bamboo Earring (2009).

In the accompanying article, the two talk about how they met on Instagram when, in 2013, London was attempting to buy Hussle’s $ 100 album as a wrap gift for her castmates on “The Game.” After she secured the copies, she followed him. Hussle said, “You know what that means, right?!” He took it as a sign of her interest and he slid into her DMs.

In the article the couple, who are parents to a son named Kross, dispelled engagement rumors to say that they’ve been together for five years and are “building.”

In the piece the two discuss being important to Black culture but not necessarily crossing over to mainstream audiences. For London, in the time when she had the chance to possibly cross over, life happened.

“I auditioned to be Faith Evans in Notorious,” Lauren recalled. “I talked to Faith, Puff, everybody. It just came down that the director didn’t believe me as Faith.” Riding the ups and downs together, they seem to be having fun. But it was one single decision that made them more than just another celebrity couple in Nipsey’s eyes.

“Lauren was handpicked by John Singleton to do Snowfall. She read, got the part, shot the pilot…did stunts…this was her dream role,” Nipsey said. “And then she got pregnant with our son. That was a really hard decision for her to make. It was the toughest decision of my career by far.”

But ultimately, London said she made the right decision.

“Do I choose my soul or myself?” Lauren said. “I went with my soul.”

What Online-Only Beauty Brands Do You Love?

There are so many brands now that don’t seem to exist in the main stores but are huge driving forces because of social media — so what online-only beauty brands have you tried based on social media ads? What do you love, what was a waste of money? Some notes from me…

Glossier – I forget which product I kept seeing online that made me try Glossier, but a lot of the ones I’ve tried are in my regular rotation, including their Milky Jelly cleanser, their highlighter (Haloscope) and their lash tint (even I can wear it and mascara often bugs me). I’ve also tried their scent (like but don’t love), Boy Brow (not the best for my sparse eyebrows), and the Generation G lip gloss (too dry for me). I still have a good liquid blush but I’d try their CloudPaint next.

Thrive Causemetics – I finally bit the bullet because I wanted to try their mascara; about a month ago I wound up ordering that as well as a lip gloss, a lip liner, and a navy eyeliner. I’m still figuring out how I feel about all of them, to be honest — the mascara seemed a bit gloppy on first applications but it’s definitely more volumizing than the Glossier mascara. The lip liner seems more moisturizing than my MAC one and is unnoticeable. At first I really liked the glossy lip but now I wonder if it’s too “wet” for daily life (my coffee cup gets totally covered in it).

Native Deodorant – I think Target just started carrying this. A friend of the family is really into animal rights and has been trying a lot of cruelty-free brands; I tried Native based on her recommendation and ordered a sampler pack. I like them faaaaar better than Tom’s, which is the only other natural deodorant I tried, and in general I’m wearing them instead of my 15+ year preferred brand, Mitchum. Come summertime we’ll see whether I still use my Native deodorant, but for non-sweaty weather it’s fine. My favorite scents thus far are seasonal Cotton & Powder, Lavendar & Rose, and Vanilla & Coconut — I really hope they make the Cotton & Powder a permanent scent.

Phlur – I wrote before about my love for my new date-night scent, Hepcat…

HanacureI wrote before about my experience with the Hanacure mask — to be honest I haven’t bought it again though. (Although, hmmn, I have a bachelorette party coming up in a few months…) It’s now available at a ton more spots, including Barney’sNeiman Marcus and Amazon.

ColorPop – Who among us hasn’t randomly ordered $ 50 worth of stuff? To be honest I ordered a bunch of stuff many moons ago — two years — and none of it wound up in regular rotation.

The Ordinary – I hesitate to include this brand in the list because a) I mostly heard about it from readers here more than social media, b) it’s now sold at Sephora, and c) there seems to be drama going on behind the scenes – but I use their Caffeine Solution on my eyes, particularly when they’re a bit puffy…

Others that keep popping up in my social media that I haven’t tried yet:

  • Mented – nude lipsticks for women of color (probably not for me, but they do look really well done!)
  • Prose – custom hair care
  • Madison Reed – DIY hair color

How about you guys — what beauty products have you ordered from online-only stores based on stuff you saw or heard about on social media? What online-only beauty products do you love — and what bad experiences have you had?

How a 19th-Century Frenchman Nailed Love for All Time

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

For all of the works of prose that focus on the subject of love—surely the greatest theme and mystery in literature—it’s curious how rarely authors get clinical about the subject. To break it down. To pin it to a dissecting tray, fold back the layers, and say, “see that part over there? That makes for skipped heart beats. This part here, that takes care of the arousal. This middle bit, that’s when you know you’re hooked.”

But if ever there was a born literary dissector, that would be the Frenchman Marie-Henri Beyle, better known as the novelist Stendhal. He went by a lot of different names in France in the first half of the 19th century, being King Pseudonym. He disliked his father, thinking he wasn’t creative enough, and doted on his mother, who died when he was seven.

He dug the military and the theater, serving in Napoleon’s army, engineering a rescue on a river that was much discussed, then sojourning in Italy where he picked up some dandified ways, which played well in Paris, where he went through woman after woman. You might say Stendhal dated serially; or you might say he had a thing for racking up sexual conquests.

Bag Over Bae: Study Says Consumers Favor Money Over Love

Valentine’s Day, depending on who you ask, is a day filled with Instagramable moments of bae goals, or a time to totally go the anti-beau route and focus on self-love. You can’t get through February 14th without seeing an oversaturation of all things related to love.

However, a recent Merill Edge report reflects that for many people, money trumps love with 56% preferring a partner who provides financial security over grandiose love (44%). Respondents also favor a partner who is career-focused (63%) over socially conscious (37%), frugal (55%) over philanthropic (45%), and a saver (83%) over a big spender (17%).

“Americans are saving money at record rates, and yet we’re seeing people of all ages look to their current and prospective partners to secure their financial futures. Economic uncertainty and a lack of financial planning seem to be creating this burgeoning trend of dependence on others for financial security,” Aron Levine, head of Consumer Banking & Merrill Edge, said in a statement. “We believe that it’s crucial to have a financial plan at every life stage in order to achieve financial goals and stay on the right path to financial success.”

Though many are attracted to a go-getter who is all about getting that coin, things can get a little sticky when it comes to the oh-so-inevitable “money talk” with bae. The report found the majority of respondents admitted they “rarely talk about their debt (60%),” salary (57%), and investments (55%) with their partner.

Respondents in the study also ranked almost all major relationship milestones ahead of discussing their finances, including meeting the family, being intimate, traveling together, and discussing politics.

According to Merrill Edge, the nationwide survey is delivered semi‑annually and “takes an in‑depth look at the financial concerns and priorities of “mass affluent Americans—U.S. households with investable assets ranging from $ 50,000 to $ 250,000.” Respondents in the study included those aged 18-40 (Gen Z and millennials) with investable assets between $ 50,000 and $ 250,000 or aged 18-40 who have investable assets between $ 20,000 and $ 50,000 with an annual income of at least $ 50,000.

If money is a major factor in a choosing a love or spouse, experts recommend getting over the awkward silence and procrastination and asking key questions about debt, money morality, and financial plans for the future—including retirement—early. Having open and honest conversations about money with someone of serious romantic interest—especially as millennial households are earning more money at their age than generations before—can help those in the dating pool avoid a lot of heartbreak and relationship woes down the road.

How To Mix Love And Money

VALENTINE’S DAY IS THURSDAY AND TODAY WE ARE TALKING LOVE AND MONEY.

While millions of people are making plans for Thursday, a much smaller number is thinking about the role finances play in their relationship. And while talking about money isn’t exactly romantic, it is a mistake to ignore the role it can play in relationships. Money is among the top reasons couples fight, and it may even prevent you from finding someone in the first place!

WITH THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR LOVE, FINANCIAL HEALTH CAN BE A BIG FACTOR, RIGHT?

If you are trying to find Mr. or Ms. Right, your credit score might matter a lot more than you think. Since the financial crisis, numerous surveys have found that financial factors have taken on greater importance when it comes to attractiveness. Take debt: a recent survey from Finder.com found debt is a key consideration.

Nearly three-quarters of American adults (72%) said they would reconsider a romantic relationship because of the other person’s debt. Respondents said credit card debt was the biggest concern, with 56% citing that as a red flag, followed by student loan debt (52%), and payday loan debt (49%) following close behind.

This is not to say that if you have some student loan debt you are destined to be single, but it is a good reminder that healthy financial habits have benefits that go beyond money. So, check your credit report for errors. Pay your bills on time. Put a premium on living within your means and paying down outstanding debt. Start saving for retirement. This will put your finances and perhaps your dating life on a  more secure financial footing!

WHAT IF WE ALREADY HAVE SOMEONE WE ARE SWEET ON? HOW DO YOU START OUT A RELATIONSHIP ON THE RIGHT FOOT WHEN IT COMES TO MONEY?

Honesty and transparency are imperative when it comes to finances. A recent CreditCards.com survey found 19 percent of people in live-in relationships were hiding a bank or credit card account from their partner. That’s about 29 million Americans! Considering trust is the single most important predictor of the success of a relationship, that means 1 in 5 people in this situation is putting their relationship at risk. This is not the route that you want to take.

Instead, it is best to get it all out in the open, rather than waiting until late in the game. Now I am not saying that you break out your credit history on the second date, but you do want to discuss your respective financial practices and backgrounds as your relationship gets more serious. If you have outstanding debts or past mistakes, share them with your partner. These factors will have an outsized impact on what you can achieve together, whether that is buying a house, raising children or traveling the world. Being honest and open about your finances will ensure there are no surprises later, and it will mean you and your sweetheart are more likely to stay together!

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE WHO ARE READY TO TIE THE KNOT?

For those of you out there who are ready to get hitched, you want to develop a joint financial plan before the big day.  This means taking the time to define your mutual money goals and outline your shared financial commitments. Both of you should be equals when it comes to your finances. Each person should be involved in money management, understand what decisions are being made, what your cash flow looks like, and the status of any financial accounts.

You should develop a joint budget and determine how each person will contribute to living expenses and other joint costs ahead of time. None of this is to say your finances have to be totally merged – in fact, it is important for each party to maintain a financial identity of their own – but you want to be on the same page when it comes to your shared money goals.

The other thing you must do before you tie the knot is to get everything in writing! We have all heard the stories: two people madly in love and convinced nothing will ever come between them, so they throw caution to the wind. Then something does happen, and money issues come to the fore.

While it may not be fun, or even feel optimistic, putting your financial agreements in writing is very important. Whether it is a prenuptial agreement which clearly specifies your respective assets or a living trust or will that determine what happens to your money in the event of a tragedy, you should handle this before you sign your wedding certificate.

ANY OTHER FINANCIAL TIPS FOR COUPLES?

Always remember to keep an open financial dialogue. Plan for hardship periods, especially if your family depends on two incomes. And work together to save for your future.

The Four Financial Love Languages Spoken in Every Relationship

Financial fights are one of the leading causes of divorce. Many couples find it difficult to effectively communicate with each other about money matters because they are actually speaking different financial languages. That’s right! Finance is a language, and unfortunately, most people are not financially bilingual. It is actually more difficult to speak or understand someone else’s financial communication when you don’t really understand your own financial language.

In 2004, Gary Chapman introduced the concept of Love Languages to help people improve their relationships through communication. In my upcoming book, 4 Financial Languages, I explain that financial languages are identified by behaviors and words that represent an individual’s financial value systems. By understanding these behaviors and words, couples can improve communication and establish a collective financial value system.

Put the two concepts together and you have financial love languages.

Learning how to speak in your mate’s financial love language will not only help you avoid money misunderstandings, but it will help you and your mate enjoy the journey toward your financial goals.

The 4 Financial Love Languages

SAVING

Financial security is usually the primary concern of people who speak the dominant language of saving. A Saver primarily saves money because they like to see their money grow like a strong tree.

Some savers also save to protect themselves and their family from financial hardships and emergencies. It is vital for them to be able to help their loved ones financially — now, and in the future.

One of the best ways to communicate with Savers about money matters is to talk about how much money they will save or including them on a purchase to find the best deal.

For example: “You are the best at saving us money. Can you help me find the best deal on a big screen TV so we can stay within our budget?”

GIVING

People who speak giving have a philanthropist’s heart. For most givers, giving is an expression of love. They give their time, money, resources, etc. to help those in need.

Givers should be cautious if they find that they are giving out of an act of insecurity in exchange for an emotional connection or to be liked.

The best way to communicate with givers is to praise them for their giving spirit. In most instances, givers simply like to feel appreciated.

For example, “You have such a wonderful heart of giving. Let’s find some more ways to give where it will be a bigger impact.”

INVESTING

Those who speak investing take relative risks and enjoys watching their money grow as well.

They like to invest in the stock market, retirement, business opportunities, education, or other people.

The best way to communicate with investors is to discuss transactions or opportunities as “investments” and as well as share the potential return on those investments.

For example, “We could make some great contacts for our business if we invest $ 200 in attending this conference.”

SPENDING

Spending deals directly with the pleasure principle. Whether the spending is for someone else or themselves, spenders find ultimate pleasure in spending money, usually on stuff.

True spenders can be rebellious when they feel financially deprived or restricted.

The best way to communicate with a spender is not to judge, but rather give parameters of spending.

For example, instead of telling a spender they can’t spend because of the budget, tell them, “We have $ 200 to spend this month.”

Understanding financial love languages will aid in having more effective financial conversations with your mate. If needed, seek help from a financial professional to mediate your cash conversation. Finances, just like love, can be a beautiful experience when both partners respect and appreciate the other’s language.

Diamonds Grown In a Laboratory Can Still Say, ‘I Love You’

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Three days before New Year’s Eve, Zach Bass proposed to his girlfriend, Sam Wannemacher, during a private pre-hours tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Greek and Roman hallway. As a friend offered to take their picture in front of the art, Bass got down on one knee, and told Wannemacher he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.

The scene was romantic. The light, streaming in from the museum’s roof ceiling, was just right. The two-carat round ring Bass chose for the occasion was just what Wannemacher wanted: elegant, understated—and made in a laboratory.

Rather than forming underneath the Earth’s surface, lab-grown diamonds are produced via CVD, or chemical vapor deposition. Scientists fill a low-pressure vacuum with gases, which ultimately react to each other and form a diamond. Jessica Warch, who co-founded the sustainable jewelry line Kimai—as worn by Meghan Markle earlier this month—said the process can take six to twelve weeks, as opposed to millions of years.

T’exstyle wanted to share this video of an inspiring 83-year old woman who happens to look fantastic in addition to having a great voice.

After today’s blog post, Runcarla refers us to this article about Princess Eugenie who wanted her wedding dress to show her back surgery scar. She adds: “This hits close to home for me. DS#2 was born with an underdeveloped and blind eye and a strawberry birthmark on the right side of his face. To me, he was a most beautiful round and sturdy golden morsel. Unfortunately the world did not see him the same way, and we were the recipients of many hurtful comments. At 8 months, he was fit with his first prosthetic eye by a very kind and gifted occularist who DS still sees 25 years later. The strawberry mark faded with time. Like Princess Eugenie says: ‘I think you can change the way beauty is.’”

Would You Let Your Besties Choose Your Date? This New App Gives Your Friends Control Over Your Love Life

How much do you trust your besties? Enough that you would let them pick your next date? New dating app “Ship” allows friends to pick potential matches for each other.

The idea is that your closest friends know you better than you may know yourself.

Aleen Kuperman, Jordana Abraham and Samantha Fishbein, creators of the meme account Betches, created the app to help daters have assistance in their mate selection process.

Dating apps are a huge part of today’s dating culture and people in relationships are begging their single friends to let them swipe for them,” the Betches founders said to The Independent.

“We felt like there could be a better way to incorporate your friends into your online dating experience,” Kuperman, Jordan, and Fishbein explain.

While the founders believe that getting your friends to dictate your dating decisions is a noble idea, dating coach James Preece thinks it may be a bad idea, considering we may tell our friends what we want versus what we need.

“Our friends know what we tell them,” Preece described.

“What we say we want, what we think we want, what we need and what we can get are all completely different things,” he expressed, meaning our friends may not be able to accurately guess our tastes.

The app also has an option where you can invite your friends into a “crew,” where everyone can swipe on each other’s behalf.

In theory, choosing dates for your friends sounds fun, but proceed with caution. Your friends could be choosing traits for you that they like, that have nothing to do with your own personal preferences. Dating and relationships psychologist Madeleine Mason Roantree says that your friends may choose dates for you based on their own agenda.

“The more open and honest you are to your friends about who you are and what you are looking for, the greater the chance of success you’ll have on this app,” Roantree told The Independent.

Giorgio Armani Shows his Love of Colors

TRUE COLORS: The photographic exhibit “Fabula,” unveiled Friday evening at the Armani Silos space, isn’t what one would really expect from Giorgio Armani–and the designer knows it. “I was tickled by the idea that people think I love neutrals so much, that this is a contradiction and that Armani doesn’t love colors, but, actually, here they are,” said Armani during a walkthrough. “I fell in love with these color palettes, and I had fun with the images.”
Indeed, the exhibition of more than 250 images by French photographer Charles Fréger, his largest to date and running until March 24, is joyful and entertaining, capturing a variety of subjects from around the world, ranging from the Finnish ice-skating team and images of young Sumo wrestlers and Sikh soldiers to whimsically and artfully painted Jaipur elephants or quirky yet traditional masked costumes.

Armani, who years ago staged his own “Eccentrico” exhibition said there is a “need for eccentricity today. He lamented how generally “we are now stupidly attracted by small and banal things, but we need to be stimulated.” In fashion, too, it seems “anything now is an invention, but that’s not true. We must be inventive.”
