Chinese Rapper China Mac Makes Argument To Use N-Word

Brooklyn-born rapper China Mac, born Raymond Yu, recently shared his views on the usage of n-word on the Flip Da Script Podcast with comedian QueenzFlip and Dj Gmoney.

The 30-minute show was uploaded on YouTube on December 31, during which host QueenzFlip explained why the racial slur should only be reserved for use by Black folks.

“Me, I feel that a person that’s not from Black descent regardless if they are from the hood or if they are in the hood they should not say the n-word. That’s me,” he said. “’Cause I feel like that’s where I come from. I’m African. I’m Black. I feel I’m a Black guy, I’m a ‘n-gga.’ I feel like I grew up around and I went through that.”

He also believes “We took a bad word, n-gger, and we turned into a good word. We turned it into a word of endearment amongst the African American community. I’ve watched, as a kid, I’ve watched Puerto Ricans that said ‘n-gga’ that didn’t consider themselves Black and laughed at Black people.”

“I feel that a lot of people can’t relate to what we go through. I’m not saying that you can’t relate but I just don’t feel like another race should use a word that was considered a word that was disrespecting Black people,” he added.

China Mac added that the way the n-word is used now no longer means disrespect.

“I’m with you every day and you’d be like ‘Yo, that’s my n-gga China Mac bro,’ and you say that. Then it’s always thrown around me and sh*t. You cannot expect me not to say that word because we f**k with each other. And you’re using it towards me, using it around me. You can’t expect me not to say the word. And then now, once this one says it to that level, the disrespect is no longer there. It’s not about disrespect.”

“That word, the connotation of that word, doesn’t come with disrespect. You’re the same, saying that you guys took the disrespect out but then you want to put the disrespect sometimes. Like, it’s not disrespectful here, but it’s disrespectful here.”

He further noted that the n-word is now “part of the culture.”

“It’s in the music, it’s in everything, it’s part of the culture. And culture is not color. Culture is the environment. Culture is how you were raised. Culture was the people around you.

“So now, when we say that word, when other Asian people say that word, they don’t mean it by disrespect. It’s different in the 50s, in the 60s.”

QueenzFlip believes the term remains a trigger topic for many Blacks, and for this reason, China Mac stopped using the n-word in his songs and social media.

‘Untouchable’ Makes the Case for More Lenient Sex Offender Laws in America

Meerkat Media Collective

According to Untouchable, there’s a reason most Americans think sex offenders, and pedophiles in particular, are incurable, and thus destined to relapse: 2002’s McKune v. Lile, in which Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in a plurality opinion that there was a “frightening and high risk of recidivism” for such predators, and that “the rate of recidivism of untreated offenders has been estimated to be as high as 80 percent.” That statement has since been used in numerous legal verdicts as well as to support countless pieces of state and local legislation aimed at curbing the rights of those found guilty of crimes against kids. In doing so, it’s become de facto common wisdom, almost universally accepted as a bedrock truth about individuals who possess child pornography or abuse (or have improper relations with) a minor.

The problem? The sole piece of evidence that led Justice Kennedy to make such a bold claim came from a 1986 Psychology Today article written by Ronald Longo, a counselor who ran a treatment program in an Oregon prison—and there was absolutely no statistical basis for his “80 percent” assertion. Moreover, Longo himself has since rejected that figure.

Untouchable, a documentary about sex offenders written, directed and produced by David Feige—which arrives on home video and VOD on January 15, after winning  the Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival—doesn’t drop that bombshell revelation until after its midway point, which in journalistic terms is akin to burying the lede. Nonetheless, Feige’s delay does little to neuter its impact, given that he spends the early portions of his non-fiction film incisively investigating multiple sides of the sex-offender issue. From victims and perpetrators, to activists who want to throw the convicted away and lose the key, it’s an eye-opening look at a thorny topic that, on the face of it, probably doesn’t strike many as very complex or controversial at all.

‘Overwatch’ Makes Voice Chat Essential, But is Winning Worth The Online Abuse?

Unlike most team-based shooters, in Overwatch, voice chat is essential if you want to perform well at the upper echelons of competitive play. Ignoring the every player for themselves approach of its contemporaries, Blizzard‘s shooter is refreshingly team-oriented and here working collectively as a team can go a long way. From strategizing to shot-calling, here, communication is always key to winning.

Despite this, bafflingly, lots of Overwatch players actively refrain from using voice chat. Not only do some players decide against talking in the voice channel—some even go as far as to leave it entirely, meaning that they can’t even hear those who are using the feature. Why? <Well, as with many other online games, Overwatch can be a platform that’s plagued with toxicity. While popping on for a quick bit of pew pewery, it’s sadly not uncommon to hear an angry voice yelling personal attacks or even hate speech in the voice channels of Blizzard’s shooter. Like with the rest of the internet, here players revel in the anonymity they’re afforded by voice chat, using the feature as a means of bullying others with little consequence.

So, in an effort to understand why people do and don’t use voice chat, we spoke with Josh Bishop, Aimee Hart, and Natalie Flores. All avid players of Overwatch, they each had their own unique opinions on the pros and cons of voice chat in competitive Overwatch.

Josh’s story

I didn’t use voice chat in the past. It felt really bad whenever I got flamed in Overwatch—I don’t really know why, but in Overwatch specifically, it felt worse than other games. A while back I joined a Diamond/Masters Overwatch team and ever since then I’ve used voice chat because the part I enjoy now is the teamwork aspect. I definitely feel this is the best game out there for teamwork and that not using voice chat does kind of mess up you and your team. Now I don’t care much about what they say and if I get a particularly annoying person in one of my games I just mute them specifically instead of leaving the entire channel.

Back when I would regularly leave voice chat I liked to play Mei. Even if she wasn’t amazing, she was still playable and I definitely won games on her. No one else really agreed with me, though, and the second I would pick Mei everyone would scream at me and want me to switch. I will say that this is for sure the most toxic community I’ve ever been a part of, for reasons just like this. They’re angry all the time for no reason.

It sounds strange to say, but I feel League of Legends’ toxicity isn’t anywhere near as bad. I think it’s because they don’t flame you often for your pick or other dumb things like that—they flame you over whether or not your decisions are correct. This doesn’t bother me as much because I stand by my decisions usually. Plus, it’s all through text. League has no voice chat at all. I just mute their chat and forget they exist. When I’m trying really hard in ranked I just mute chat right when the game starts.

If I’m playing ranked and trying hard to win, that’s what I do. I have a habit of trying to type back when people get toxic. I feel like I have to be the one defending everyone from the flame. Also, in League not much that gets typed is important. I’d say maybe 5% of messages are important.

LoL has a very good system of pings so you can communicate without having to type it all out. You can press one button to bring up a menu of four pings; enemy missing, on my way, be careful, and I need assistance. On top of that, you can ping enemy abilities and items to call attention to them or to ping that they’re on cooldown or whatever else. None of these things get muted when you mute chat.

Flamed for choosing his favorite heroes but receptive of the fact that voice chat is essential for successful team play, Josh has resolved to mute toxic players with a zero-tolerance policy toward toxicity. This is a quick fix and does remove the toxic elements of the game, but it also limits Josh’s ability to communicate with some teammates. In order to block out their toxic behavior, all lines of communication must be severed, which directly impinges on team play.

Aimee’s story

Heroes of the Storm Overwatch Officer D.Va
And just like that a brand new Officer D.Va cosplay was born

It was a while back but I can remember who I was playing and everything because it was just that good, y’know?
I didn’t used to like voice chat, but I used to watch a streamer called RagTagg and he was always like “you’ll do better in competitive if you talk. You may not want to, but you’ve gotta do it if you want to do well.” So, I tried it out myself, and it was pretty hit and miss. Sometimes we’d win, sometimes we’d lose. I found that I was mostly by myself on voice chat, which I didn’t mind because I’m quite shy.

Until it got to that game. It was competitive (Gold) and I was on King’s Row. I was playing D.VA and to be honest, we didn’t have a good team. I can’t remember the full composition, but I know there was a Mercy and a Widowmaker, and I was the only tank. So, it wasn’t great, but I didn’t tell them to change and was like “okay, we’d probably do better if we had another tank and another healer, but if you don’t want to change then that’s okay. Just have fun.” Or…something along those lines.

Like, it was definitely forced positivity at that point, solely because I’d been miserable on competitive before and got real toxic so now I was like “LET’S BE POSITIVE –EVEN WITH DIRE ODDS.”

We’d pushed the payload to the very last point on King’s Row, but we couldn’t complete it.It was the enemy’s turn, and just as we were preparing, someone on our team suddenly left.I can’t remember who it was, but I know it wasn’t Mercy or Widowmaker because I remember them distinctly.

Like I said, I could tell the team was down and we were stumbling a lot. The enemy team took the first point easily and by that time I just knew if we didn’t do something then we’d lose for sure.

At that time I went off voice chat because I could feel myself getting angry and didn’t want to take it out on anyone; but,  just as they went past the first corner of the payload, I was like “ah, f** it” and went back on chat and was like “alright, I know it looks bad but I think we can do this. We’re trickling in at the moment, but I’ve got my ult and if we can get rid of the tank (I think it was Rein) then I can do my ult and we can hold the payload,” or something along those lines. It was a really long time ago—I think Orisa had just been added to the game.

But anyway, we teamed up and managed to get Rein out of the picture and I flew my mech into the enemy team and BAM! Caught them completely unaware and it was a team kill.

Then I think it was Widow or Mercy who came on the voice chat and was like “YES! Go D.VA! We can do this everyone!” He was an American guy for definite, because he had a real thick accent. And honest to GOD we ended up winning. It was so great. Me and the guy were cheering when we won and just spammed thanks. Honestly, it was the best feeling in the world. I’ve not had a comp match like that for ages.
Aimee’s story is warm and uplifting, highlighting the side of Overwatch that players dream of. Aimee is the person you want on your team—the anti-toxic teammates who praises you when you do well and forgives you when you make a mistake. When Aimee told us this, we don’t think she knew that she was the star of the story, but that’s just how it is. If more people were like this, Overwatch’s toxicity problem would be solved in a heartbeat.

Natalie’s Story

Mercy is an essential part of many Overwatch teams. But will these latest changes make Mercy mains think twice?

So basically, sometimes I’ll play overwatch with my friends and I’ll want to play a little more after they take their leave. When that happens, I have to disconnect my headphones, plug in my splitter cable with the headphone jack, and plug my headphones back into that so that I can join voice chat without my own voice getting picked up. This is how I play Overwatch, because voice chat is super important since it’s supposed to be a team-based game.

Sometimes, I’m a little Zenyatta getting focused by the enemy team, but I’d rather frustratingly keep dying and drop in rank—which I honestly take pretty seriously as someone who is really involved with this game—than to go on voice chat with my microphone

I think the last time I went on mic was when I was playing as Mercy in a competitive match on Lijiang Tower. I hadn’t been using my mic for most of the match, but when I got attacked by an asshole for not healing enough (despite healing 8k at that point and doing my best with the other healer on our team that was focusing more on attacking than healing), I got on mic to tell him how much I had healed and that I wasn’t the problem, actually.

He then proceeded to call me a dirty whore and got super aggressive and hostile, and nobody was defending me, so when he said that, I just nodded and told them “Oh, I see how it is. Well, nice game!” and I purposely left the match, which I never usually do.

If it’s not that kind of interaction, then the other interaction in voice chat that I most vividly remember is playing on Eichenwalde with a team of dudes who seemed pretty nice, which made me felt confident going in voice chat and making callouts, strategizing, etc.

Almost immediately after I joined voice chat, this one guy started to fawn over my voice, telling me it was really cute and repeating some of the things I’d say, saying that he just loved my voice. He kept doing that and it was super distracting because I just wanted to focus on the game, but instead I was thinking about how much he was Othering me from the rest of the team.

It was the exact opposite of calling me a dirty whore; it was nice, even if flirtatious, but they both served the same purpose: to other me because I’m a woman. Any reason I should use voice chat for, like strategizing or asking for help since I tend to main supports and the enemy team often focuses me as a result, has never been a risk that compensates for the possible vitriol or othering I will experience.

You can never know—sometimes, a teammate may seem nice and not toxic, but then they’ll say something is “so gay” when we’re in 2018. And, because you can never know, I’d rather not put myself at risk. So that’s how I play Overwatch now: with my splitter cable so that I can listen to people talk but never speak myself. I’m rarely afraid to voice my own opinions, and you know me as someone who definitely doesn’t shy away from doing that, but when it comes to playing online games, I shut down. It’s a bit uncomfortable, because I’d like to speak. I’m used to it—but I can’t do it in Overwatch.

The only times I will join voice chat are when I know another woman is in there. And I’ve had it happen to me, when I used to go into voice chat more often than not, that me speaking leads to another woman in the team plugging in her mic later on and feeling comfortable in speaking. I have almost 1,000 hours played in Overwatch. Maybe less than 30 of those hours have involved me participating in voice chat. And 30 is really generous, frankly.

Natalie brings a whole new issue to the table here. An avid Overwatch player, Natalie takes competitive matches very seriously and tries to use voice chat as much as possible. Tragically, her voice is what makes her teammates either toxic or distracting—purely because she’s a woman. This issue extends the whole way up to professional play, with Shanghai Dragons’ Geguri being the only woman currently playing in the Overwatch League. Alongside the general toxicity that ruins an objectively great game for so many people is a culture founded upon gendered insults and misogyny. The worst thing about Overwatch

Don’t make a stellar teammate like Josh mute you. Aim to be Aimee. Treat Natalie with the same degree of respect that you’d afford your very own friends and family. Overwatchvoice chat is a feature designed to make a team game team-oriented. It’s not for bullying people. It’s for helping them.

‘Artifact’ is a Misstep That Makes the Competition Seem Generous

Card gamers love a good synergy. When Valve teamed up to make a card game with Richard Garfield, creator of Magic: The Gathering, it had all the markings of one of Valve’s celebrated collaborations. The formula of bringing in external designers to Valve-ify an idea has brought us Portal, Team Fortress 2, and DOTA 2. Now it’s brought us Artifact.

You would’ve been brave to predict the blunder it became.

Artifact is a modern Frankenstein of a card game that takes the ridiculous randomness of Hearthstone, the multiple lanes of Legends, and the turn-based approach of Gwent, the theme and characters of DOTA 2, then wraps it all up in a tone-deaf monetisation scheme that is uniquely Valve.

Spells and units can’t attack across the three lanes, unless specified. Starting from the left lane, players will go tit-for-tat tweaking who attacks who, which units get buffed or bodied, and which heroes get expensive items. When both players finally pass, combat is resolved.

Artifact three lane play
Artifact is like playing three card games at once. Which lanes will you invest in?

First, the Good News

Gwent players will feel most at home here. Artifact’s scandalous reliance on RNG is mitigated by its quick turns before combat resolves. Players go back and forth, able to react to whatever random event their opponent triggered. Mostly.

Artifact would be a unparalleled pain in the ass if players had to keep track of all its mathematical modifiers. But being all digital and computer-ey, everything is calculated and displayed for you. There’s an easy solution for viewing units that don’t fit into the lane, and you can swipe between lanes.

You can hover your mouse over a unit’s attack or health to see everything currently modifying it. Your little on-screen dragon will even hop onto the board to warn you when you’re about to lose a lane. All of which are nice, quality of life advancements.

Artifact dragons board graphics UI presentation
A fantastic job has been done with Artifact's presentation.

After units are randomly placed, it’s like a chess puzzle. You find a solution with your limited means of affecting the board. Except in Artifact, not every round has a solution. When to fight, when to abandon a lane, and baiting the enemy into over-committing are all part of the strategy.

Another system borrowed from Gwent, the first player to pass gains “initiative” and goes first in the next lane. This makes for a nice mind game in which you have to choose between affecting the board, and setting yourself up for the next lane. If you’re already winning a lane, passing just to see if your opponent can solve their dilemma is Artifact’s equivalent of Poker’s check raise.

These are the makings of a pretty good card game. Complicated problems to solve, good mind games, and great graphics with an intuitive UI.

It’s what comes next that makes Artifact so hard to recommend.

Paying the Roll Toll

For all the well-designed elements of Artifact, there are just as many RNG-based frustrations. Your unit positioning and even attack target are decided by chance. With four units entering a lane, that amounts to eight die rolls before you even draw new cards.

Rounds – and games – are occasionally won or lost because heroes that should know better decided to pour their high attack values into a diagonal creep instead of the tower straight ahead.

The Artifact philosophy on randomness is clear: if you stack system after system based on randomness, unfair die rolls will balance out through sheer quantity. A hundred die rolls is fairer than one.

The counterpoint to that is, certain moments are undeniably more important than others. Both players may have played evenly in the lead-up to a pivotal moment, and the localised randomness in that “swing” round has a higher weight than other turns. In the same vein, some matches are more important than others — which makes single elimination tournaments in RNG-focused card games somewhat of a joke.

There’s no Yogg-Saron. That’s a plus. But there’s also some extremely bad RNG. The standout example is Cheating Death, which rolls its result after you’ve interacted with it, not before.

Artifact RNG card Cheating Death random
Pure filth.

There’s nothing stopping heroes from continuously Cheating Death an entire game, which we’ve seen. It’s not a fun kind of RNG for the attacker or defender, and it also happens to be in the most popular deck.

Many of Artifact‘s die rolls have an outcome that’s objectively good or bad. Take Bounty Hunter for example, which has a 50% chance to do more damage (objectively good in any situation) every round. There’s no interesting decision to make based on Bounty Hunter’s RNG. He just either kills your hero or he doesn’t.

Bottom line: you will occasionally win and lose matches because Artifact’s random number generator decided to be unkind. Some people are okay with that as a concept. But it’s a lot more palatable in a free-to-play game, which Artifact is not.

Artifact Axe hero card
Even with a limited roster, some heroes are head and shoulders above others.

Pay-to-Pay-to-Win

There’s no way to unlock more cards through playing Artifact. There’s also no ranked mode. All ways to get cards and play competitively involve paying more money. Winning in the “expert” mode will win you tickets to play more expert mode, but going infinite isn’t possible.

That’s because Artifact requires you to win three matches before you lose two, in order to win another “ticket.” That implies at least a 75% winrate (per run) in a matchmaking system that targets winrates of 50%.

This bizarre model has rightly resulted in a flood of negative reviews on Steam.

Artifact mixed Steam reviews
Not a great start for such a highly anticipated game.

Part of the problem stems from Artifact’s marketplace. It allows you to buy individual cards from other players — after Valve takes a cut. Artifact’s upfront cost was introduced to stop new accounts being created purely to send free starter cards to someone’s main account, or being sold on the marketplace, affecting prices.

But there’s no good reason to not earn cards through play, and there’s no good reason to deny non-paying players a competitive mode with leagues and ladders. Other games with marketplaces have come up with more elegant solutions. Such as not allowing trades for cards earned through play.

Apologists talk about the unlimited play available in casual mode, as if Artifact deserves a medal for providing this most basic of features. Yes, believe it or not, you can play the game you paid for. But the lack of other features makes it feel like the upfront cost only got you a demo for the real game.

Artifact rewards gauntlet run ticket packs expert
The goal of gauntlet runs is to win five before you lose two. Rewards kick in at three wins.

Loyalists will point out that it’s a “trading card game, not a collectible card game,” as if some twist of semantic sorcery would undo the expectations of the market. There’s a certain point you have to look at the rest of the world, cursors hovering over the Thumbs Down button on Steam reviews, and think… “Maybe it’s me.”

No XP or levels, no ladders or rankings, no chat/emotes, no stats, no achievements (in a Valve game!). Even players who pay more aren’t getting the features deemed minimum.

Artifact Steam marketplace cards
The market is available to buy the best cards directly, if you want to avoid opening packs.

Modern gaming’s love affair with progression systems and psychological manipulation has resulted in feel-good reward fests that are all icing and no cake. We loathe advocating for more. But here, where the player is keenly aware their gameplay leads to no reward, Artifact’s lack of progression seems even more stark.

Is Artifact Good?

Can you separate a game’s design from its business model? In the case of Artifact, that’s a resounding no. Both are broken. In a market of pay-to-play, Artifact is pay-to-pay. Skill matters, but the strongest card is your credit card.

Even with a sane pricing structure, Artifact would have its problems. Despite flashes of design brilliance, it ultimately falls on the wrong side of the RNG line. While its ideology that copious die rolls are safer than a few is somewhat sound, not all RNG is created equal, and we contend that no game purporting to be an esport should ever allow a match to be decided by a coin flip.

CSGO was not too popular on launch, but constant updates improved it enough to grow organically. So we won’t write off the future of Artifact — but the present is grim.

We were hoping for the next big evolution is card game design. As it stands, Artifact’s main positive quality is making us realise how good we had it with Hearthstone, Legends, and Gwent.

Constance Wu makes herstory with her 2019 Golden Globe nomination

Constance Wu makes herstory with her 2019 Golden Globe nomination

Constance Wu makes herstory with her 2019 Golden Globe nomination

Constance Wu has received her first-ever Golden Globe nomination, and it is no small feat. Wu garnered a Best Actress in a Motion Picture in a Musical or Comedy nomination for her role in Crazy Rich Asians, making her the first Asian actress to receive a nom since 1974. So, it’s been a bit over 40 years since an Asian actress was recognized in the category.

As CNN reports, the last Asian actress to receive a nomination in the category was Yvonne Elliman, who was recognized for her role in 1973’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Prior to Elliman’s nom, only two other Asian women were nominated in the category: Miyoshi Umeki, for her role in 1961’s Flower Drum Song, and Machiko Kyō, for her role in 1956’s The Teahouse of the August Moon.

Wu starred in Jon M. Chu’s breakout summer rom-com Crazy Rich Asians, the first major American studio film to feature an all-Asian cast since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club. Based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians follows Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. There, she learns of Nick’s massive family wealth and must contend with his disapproving mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh). The film shattered major box-office records, and it was announced that a sequel (the second installment of Kwan’s trilogy) was in the works just a few days after its release.

Wu’s historical nomination comes at the heels of news that Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg will co-host the upcoming awards ceremony on January 6th. Wu will be up against Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade), and Charlize Theron (Tully) in the best actress category. Crazy Rich Asians also received a nomination in the Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy category.

The Fresh Off the Boat actress took to Twitter on December 6th to gush about her nomination, writing, “What a morning to have had my phone on Do Not Disturb Mode till now… I’m ecstatic but also in shock! Thank you @goldenglobes !!!”

Tune into the 2019 Golden Globes on January 6th on NBC to watch our fave make herstory. Bok bok, bitch!

Black Barber Makes Nearly Half a Million Creating ‘Man Weaves’

Vice is reporting that a black barber based out of Maryland, is making a lucrative business creating hair weaves for men. Thirty-five-year-old barber Wade Menendez glues natural and synthetic hair to balding men’s scalps and then styles them into their remaining hair. From Vice News:

Menendez began installing hair over four years ago through the help of another stylist. Since then, his barber shop in Glen Burnie, Maryland, The W Hair Loft, has become a haven for balding black men looking for scalp rejuvenation.

Menendez also does more than just work with clients; he hosts a regular class where he’s instructed over 500 hair professionals how to do what he does. The most recent class, in October, drew stylists and barbers from as far away as London.

Hair weaves and extensions, traditionally donned by women, are a big business, especially with black consumers. Market research company Mintel reports that “Nearly six out of 10 black consumers wear a wig, weave or extensions, which enables them to switch up their look.” African Americans spend an estimated $ 2.54 billion on black haircare in the beauty supply business.

(thewhairloft.com)

Yet, much of the money spent on hair weaves does not go back into the black community. “When you walk into a beauty supply store in an urban neighborhood or a suburban strip mall most likely you will see a Korean owner,” said hairstylist Alonzo Arnold in an interview with Black Enterprise. Arnold, in addition to being a stylist, is an entrepreneur who creates custom wigs and weaves. He is also one of many black people in the beauty industry calling for more black ownership and economic empowerment.

Lia Dias is another voice. She is the owner of The Girl Cave in Los Angeles, a one-stop shop for all the things hair and clothing. In a market traditionally dominated by Korean ownership, Dias wants to empower black women to be suppliers and distributors as black women make up the largest consumers group in the industry.

Also, men are increasingly becoming consumers of beauty products that were always targeted at women. Black-owned products targeted to men of color including products from Bevel and Scotch Porter are strong men’s grooming sellers. In-Cosmetics reports that millennial-aged men are driving the current “men’s beauty” trend with younger men wearing cosmetics.

‘The Crimes of Grindelwald’ makes a major Harry Potter canon blunder

TwitterFacebook

Critics everywhere have slammed the latest Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, as there’s an absurd amount of confounding plot crammed into the 134-minute film.

Yet, the film carries a problematic canonical oversight, too: Minerva McGonagall briefly appears as a young-adult wizarding instructor at Hogwarts in 1927. The trouble is, according to Harry Potter lore, she wouldn’t have even been born at that point.

Fantastic Beasts 2 takes place in 1927 and features a 20-something Minerva McGonagall teaching at Hogwarts. BUT according to Pottermore, Professor McGonagall was born on October 4, 1935 making her a -8 year old Professor. Impressive.

Facebook Makes It Easier Than Ever For You to Vote

Over the past couple of years, Facebook has been instrumental in making it easier for users to prepare for Election Day. They’ve done this by supporting voter registration drives in both the primaries and general election through the nonpartisan TurboVote Challenge.

This year is no different. They’ve added feature sets that let people ask their friends to join them in registering to vote. In addition to that, research shows people who make a plan to vote are more likely to do so, so the platform is helping users find their polling locations, with the option to set a reminder just in case it slips their mind.

One of the biggest reasons folks shy away from voting is because they don’t know the candidates or understand the policies and the research can get confusing. Facebook now has a new tool that provides Candidate Info, which lets people hear directly from their federal, state, and local candidates on why they’re running for office, what policy issues they care about, and what they hope to accomplish if elected.

vote

Facebook Civic Engagement Infographic (Facebook)

The short videos allow the candidates to showcase the following:

  • Introduce themselves to voters and tell people about the office they’re running for.
  • What their top policy priority is and why they are the right person to work on it
  • Talk about what makes them most qualified to represent their district
  • Address what the most important goal is they hope to accomplish in office and how they plan to get it done

Facebook isn’t alone in this. Instagram is rolling out their feature set as well. You can now post that you voted with a custom “I Voted” sticker and a “We Voted!” story will appear at the front of your stories bar on November 6th so you can see all of your friends who participated. The goal for this is to encourage more users to get out and vote. As they see their friends, counterparts, and associates doing so, the hope is that it will create a viral effect encouraging others users to do so.
