Why a Latina-Led ‘Charmed’ Reboot Makes Perfect Sense

I had a special power as a child: No matter how perfectly rosy and healthy my cheeks were, no matter how energetically I had bounced off the walls just moments before, I could convince any adult that I was sick and had to be sent home from school immediately. Just like the witches of Charmed, I had the power to glamour — to change my appearance to suit my needs.

And my biggest need as a child was to convince grown-ups that the child who stood before them, theatrically coughing like a street urchin in a Charles Dickens novel, was gravely ill. Inevitably, my Mami would come to pick me up and shake her head in utter disbelief, mystified as to how my spell had worked on the school administration yet again. The second I got home, totally healthy, I’d run upstairs to my room, lock the door, and get to doing what I had planned all along: binging episode after episode of Charmed.

Sisterhood Is the Real Magic of Charmed

Charmed
The original ‘Charmed’ cast in the 1998 pilot.

If you grew up in the ‘90s, you had a host of witch role models to choose from. Movies like Practical Magic had my sister and I casting homemade love spells with flower petals; The Craft inspired a new generation of teen goths and sent us all rushing to Hot Topic to buy chokers; and Sabrina the Teenage Witch had everyone daydreaming that puberty meant discovering you were magical, not awkward and utterly confused by the new concept of wearing a bra. But my chosen potion was always Charmed and the three Halliwell sisters were my role models. Their magic was so much more than typical pop culture witch fare. It was rooted in sisterhood.

The Power of Three’s impenetrable bond shone brighter than their sequined capri pants, and that dynamic made for something more timeless; a show where the fashion may be outdated, but the female relationships feel more timely than ever. As you may already know, Charmed is returning to TV this fall and will feature three new sisters — and this time they’re brujas.

So Much More Than a Typical ’90s Reboot

Developed by Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Urman, the new show features three completely new sisters: Macy, Mel, and Maggie. Judging from the limited footage we’ve seen, this reimagining promises that the show will be strongly influenced by deep-rooted Latinx magical traditions — a small but vital slice of representation our community sorely needs in the current political climate.

Reboots tend to face backlash from the original fans (and even original cast members), but this particular reboot is more than revisiting ’90s nostalgia to make money. It’s a well-timed cultural reimagining. If the source material is strong and relevant, why not expand it and create something modern and relevant?

When a reboot is done right, it can provide marginalized groups — women, people of color, the LGBTQ community — an opportunity to get a foot in the door with an established fandom. When there’s a built-in fan base, it’s more likely a project will have longevity. By reusing a familiar idea that a network or production studio knows has worked before, creators allow underrepresented communities to integrate their own vision into an established universe and make their own space.

Latinx Families Are Already Full of Magic

Charmed
The 2018 cast of ‘Charmed.’

In my lifetime, I’ll get to see powerful women who look like me on TV defending the world from evil. Reboot or not, that is the true and undeniable new magic of the Charmed reboot. Even if you’re not ready to give this, or any, reboot a chance, we need to talk about how perfect a show and story Charmed is for a trio of specifically Latina witches.

Even if your ancestors weren’t full-blown brujas or curanderas, there’s a certain kind of everyday witchcraft involved in growing up Latinx. We grew up with sage and holy leaf next to the cilantro at the grocery store, and lived by a different set of rules: never open an umbrella indoors (it could bring harm to your grandmother), don’t leave your purse on the ground (your finances will suffer), and always put a glass of water under your bed (to ward off evil spirits).

My fondest memory of casual Latinx magic is an image of my mother and I wolfing down twelve grapes at midnight on New Years Eve (to ensure the next year brought prosperity and fortune). Some of it might sound like simple superstition, but there’s magic in tradition — and who’s to say that glass of water didn’t ward off evil spirits? At the very least, it came in handy when you woke up thirsty in the middle of the night.

Latinx Traditions Fit Perfectly in a Fantasy Setting

Charmed
The Halliwell sisters begin to explore their power.

Our inherent cultural magic provides a perfect bridge into fantasy TV. The Halliwell Sisters draw their magic from each other — it’s the Power of Three, not the Power of One — much like the community inherent to most Latinx families. Our strength lies in our unbreakable familial bonds that transcend land and sea. Our unique and rich spiritual culture will only enhance the well-established and beloved landscape of Charmed.

I can’t wait to call in sick on October 14, so I can curl up with a special cup of tea from my auntie in Guatemala (she insists it will make my hair grow thicker), invite my own coven of family and friends over, smudge my apartment with palo santo, and welcome this new generation of witches into my home. We could all use a little magical healing right now. We could all use a little inclusive sisterhood.

Eli Manning’s Disappointed Face Makes For a Very Relatable Meme

The New York Giants lost miserably to the Dallas Cowboys, 20-13, on Sunday in Arlington, Texas, an event that provided ample opportunity to see the distressed and pained facial reactions of Giants quarterback Eli Manning as he was sacked multiple times during the game.

Manning, whose emotive faces have captured the whimsy of the Internet before, seemed to be fairly stressed after getting hit hard during the game, something that football fans on social media quickly capitalized on to make the season’s most relatable meme, appropriately dubbed “Eli Manning face.”

For anyone who’s had things go awry, Manning’s face feels like a perfect representation of what it feels like to be simultaneously horrified and disappointed, as the tweets below demonstrate.

A Hollywood Liberal Investigates: What Makes Trump Voters Tick?

Sony Pictures Classics

Want to know what trumps news fatigue? Political documentary fatigue.

Since the election, doc after doc has been released and promoted, each one jockeying to be the conclusive—or at least the most impactful—purveyor of What The Hell Happened. This subgenre’s most recent installment is American Chaos, an earnest and engaging effort that still fails to add much to the conversation.

The documentary’s director, narrator, and central subject lies in Jim Stern, an accomplished film (Looper) and theater (Hairspray) producer and staunch Democrat. From the outset, Stern presents himself as an avatar of the metropolitan liberal mindset: willful, vaguely neurotic, and sincerely bewildered by anyone who doesn’t share his beliefs. “He can’t win. America’s not gullible enough,” he says, seated at his Los Angeles home desk, a book with a spine that reads BOBBY KENNEDY tossed conspicuously in front of him. “I’m a political junkie,” he continues, as the camera pans to a framed picture of Stern beaming next to Obama. “I always know what’s going on. Except now. Now I feel like I’ve lost my way.”

God’s Plan? Drake Makes History With 7 Of The Top Ten Songs On Billboard

NEW YORK (AP) — Drake officially owns the Billboard charts, where seven of his songs currently sit in the Top 10.

All 25 tracks from Drake’s ultra-popular “Scorpion” album, released on June 29, are on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

His former No. 1 hit, “Nice for What,” returns to the top of the chart, while “Nonstop” debuts at No. 2. Drake’s other songs in the Top 10 are “God’s Plan,” ”In My Feelings,” ”I’m Upset,” ”Emotionless” and “Don’t Matter to Me,” which includes previously recorded vocals from Michael Jackson.

Drake’s new feat breaks the Beatles’ 1964 record, when five of their songs reached the Top 10 in the same week.

Overall, Drake has 31 Top 10 hits, tied with Rihanna. They only trail behind The Beatles (34) and Madonna (38).

“Scorpion” sold 732,171 equivalent albums — based off album sales and streams — to debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s 200 albums chart. The album earned a record-setting 745.9 million on-demand audio streams and is his eighth No. 1 album on the chart.

Since 2009 Drake has launched 186 songs on the Hot 100 chart. He is second to the cast of “Glee,” which has had 207 songs enter the chart.

Former Kanye Collaborator Virgil Abloh Makes History At Louis Vuitton

(AP Photo/Francois Mori)

PARIS (AP) — The debut Louis Vuitton collection by Virgil Abloh, the first African-American to head a major European fashion house, drew stars of all stripes to Paris for his rainbow-themed menswear show.

Kanye West was there with his wife, Kim Kardashian West, who had returned to Paris for the first time since she was tied up and robbed at gunpoint during an October 2016 jewelry heist. Model Bella Hadid weathered a prevailing hot spell behind shades, while Rihanna and Naomi Campbell arrived for the big event of Paris Fashion Week at the last minute.

Instagram Photo
Here are some highlights from Thursday’s spring-summer menswear shows:

LOUIS VUITTON’S INCLUSIVE RAINBOW

“It is a big, big day,” Bella Hadid said as she took her seat in the yellow section of Louis Vuitton’s multicolored set.

“It’s great,” chimed in Rihanna, who rocked a hip, white LV jumpsuit.

Instagram Photo
It was clear by the mood at the show that expectations for artistic director Abloh’s debut were at stratospheric levels.

Instagram Photo
And Abloh did not squander his moment. There was deep and thoughtful symbolism throughout the 56 multicolored looks.

White dominated the first designs. The hue, which signifies purity or new beginnings, also inspired Abloh’s first main fashion venture, the Milan-based house Off-White.

Instagram Photo
On Thursday, it was the base color for sheer T-shirts, LV fitted jackets and loose pleated pants that were accessorized with broken white chains that hung from bags and dragged on the floor. All of the models displaying the garments were black.

Colors then flourished.

A fluorescent yellow breast-plate top began a leitmotif of cage-like garments, such as orange ribbed vests and fluorescent side bibs.

Abloh literally went over the rainbow for the show’s best looks, which channeled “The Wizard of Oz.” A black and white jacquard double-breasted tailored jacket had an image of Judy Garland on the back.

___

VICTOR CRUZ IS PROUD OF HISTORIC MOMENT

Abloh’s Louis Vuitton debut was recognized as a history-making moment for fashion.

American football player Victor Cruz, 31, who has African-American and Puerto Rican roots, told The Associated Press: “I’m happy to be alive and be part of this, because this hasn’t happened before in my generation.”

Cruz, who arrived with Hadid, said having an African-American designer leading a European heritage house for the first time was “opening the door. People now have to pay attention to minorities and the culture that we are shaping for ourselves.”

“This forces them to pay attention to us now,” he continued. “Pay attention in a real way, and not just inviting us to their shows. There are more doors opening to us now.”

Puma Makes Power Moves, Signs Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagley, and Jay-Z

Puma is back in the basketball business. The company has announced the signings of top draft prospects Deandre Ayton (Arizona), Marvin Bagley III (Duke), and Zhaire Smith (Texas Tech).

The Ayton signing was announced this week. The projected No. 1 pick in this week’s NBA draft signed a four-year, multimillion-dollar footwear and apparel endorsement deal. Ayton, a native of the Bahamas, shares a Caribbean connection to two of Puma’s biggest ambassadors in Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt of Jamaica and pop star Rihanna of Barbados.

“Puma is pretty popular in the Bahamas,” Ayton said. “I’ve always seen the brand growing up. [Bolt] is one of the first people I saw with the brand. It’s important to me that someone I identify with and admire as an athlete is with the same brand.”

In case competitors in the lucrative athletic shoe and apparel industry didn’t take Puma’s re-emergence into the basketball space seriously, they’ve taken immediate notice now that Jay-Z has joined as the company’s president of basketball operations. “We’ve been working with Roc Nation for quite some time. They’ve been great partners to us for several years. We’ve done many different deals with many different ambassadors,” Adam Petrick, Puma’s global director of brand and marketing, told Complex. When Puma approached him about this opportunity, Jay-Z felt it “was something he wanted to be a part of,” according to Petrick.

Meghan Markle makes her royal ascot debut in style

OHMYGOSSIP — Exactly one month after the world watched the royal wedding, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a surprise appearance in England Tuesday for the Royal Ascot opener. Queen Elizabeth II, her family and her guests will arrive at 2 p.m. each day during the royal procession, where they’ll be driven in horse-drawn carriages down the race track and into the pageant ring, E! Online mediates.

It’s the first time Meghan has attended the annual event, which began in 1768. She wore a Givenchy dress—the same label she wore for her wedding day—and a Philip Treacy fascinator. She likely impressed Queen Elizabeth II, who signs off on every detail, including the dress code.

Queen Elizabeth II arrived in the first carriage, joined by Prince Andrew, Princess Anne and Lord Samuel Vestey. Princess Beatrice, Prince Charles, Princess Eugenie and Camilla Parker-Bowles sat in the second carriage; Meghan and Harry joined Prince Edward and Countess Sophie in the third carriage; and Prince Michael of Kent, Princess Michael of Kent, Lord de Mauley Rupert Ponsonby and Lady de Mauley Lucinda Ponsonby sat in the fourth carriage. Prince William, meanwhile, was busy exploring the International Business Festival in Liverpool, and Mike Tindall and Zara Tindall welcomed Baby No. 2, a girl, Monday in Stroud.

Before the Royal Ascot, Kensington Palace announced Meghan and Harry will visit Dublin, Ireland on July 10 and July 11, at the request of Her Majesty’s Government. “The Duke and Duchess are looking forward to learning more about Ireland’s history and experiencing its rich culture,” the palace said, “as well as meeting the people who are shaping the country’s future.”

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

In our polarized world of “cable carnival shoutfest” and intransigent partisanship, Michael Smerconish is an increasingly exotic and refreshing voice. A prominent Sirius XM radio and CNN television host, he has been a regular contributor to the Daily News from November 2001 until 2007 and after that, a Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper columnist until the present day. Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right is Smerconish’s seventh book. It brings together a representative selection from the 1,047 columns he has written over the past 17 years that cover politics, profiles, life, and miscellanea.

A good number of these columns have stood the test of time. A few others Smerconish probably wishes he had never written. The columns he has included in this book are reprinted here as they appeared in the original form, with an afterword from the author that provides, in his own words, “an update on facts and feelings.” They make for enjoyable reading and remind us that journalism properly practiced requires a good deal of nerve, honesty, and insight, along with openness to dialogue and the determination not to live in a bubble.

Smerconish’s columns offer a representative slice of 21st century American life with all its ups and down, real heroes, and controversial characters. He writes with plain words and communicates his feelings in a straightforward manner. We get to meet here not only the likes of David Duke and Rush Limbaugh but also the sober voices of Arlen Specter, Tim Russert, and Jack Kemp. An inveterate admirer of Ronald Reagan, who he met in his youth, Smerconish does not shy away from applauding, when necessary, the rhetorical skills of President Obama. Nor does he avoid taking to task one of the politicians he respects, Senator John McCain, for failing to put forth an inspiring vision for the country in 2008.

Chesil Beach, Dorset: stark and beautiful, it makes your heart skip a beat

The beauty of the setting for the film On Chesil Beach is born of its rugged and rocky nature. The 18-mile sweep is best enjoyed in bite-size chunks, at its many beachside cafes

The notion of a British “beach” conjures up images of sugary sand between your toes, buckets and spades, deckchairs and jauntily painted beach huts. This, I’m afraid, is not the Chesil (in my experience of living in Dorset, fishermen, hikers and even local stick-throwing dog walkers never talk of “Chesil Beach” but simply “the Chesil”).

An Old Marvel Villain Makes a Surprising Cameo in Avengers: Infinity War

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Just about every superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. But fans certainly weren’t expecting Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. the Red Skull, from Captain America: The First Avenger in the new film. And yet there he is on the planet Vormir, where he guides Thanos to an Infinity Stone. (You can see the character in the First Avenger trailer above.)

Schmidt was the main villain in the first Captain America movie. He headed up HYDRA, a faction of the Nazi Party during World War II. He experimented on himself with a version of the super soldier serum that made Captain America tall and buff. Unfortunately for the Schmidt, the serum backfired and gave him, well, a red skull.

When the Red Skull gets his hands on the Tesseract, a powerful cube that contains an Infinity Stone, he decides to break from the Nazi Party and try to rule the world on his own. Captain America battles Red Skull, and ultimately Red Skull unwisely touches the Tesseract with his bare hands. He vanishes.

It turns out only an extremely powerful being, like Thanos, can touch Infinity Stones without dying. And even Thanos needs to carry them around in a glove to protect himself.

Infinity War reveals that the Red Skull was teleported to Vormir, where the Soul Stone is kept. The former villain explains to Thanos and Gamora that he’s been doomed to a purgatory where he can guid those who seek the Soul Stone but never attain it himself. Once Thanos claims the stone, Red Skull disappears.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Makes It To ‘Avengers 4’?

SPOILER ALERT: Warning, this article contains spoilers from Avengers: Infinity War. Proceed at your own risk.

Avengers: Infinity War is by far the most expansive movie Marvel has ever made. The cast, the villains, the threats, the stakes, everything in this film is more elevated than it has ever been. Stakes on this scale come with real consequences and when characters come face to face with Thanos, it’s not likely they will make it out alive.

So let’s just cut to the chase here: a lot of characters die in Avengers: Infinity War. Safe to say almost half of the characters in the film suffer a version of death. We say a “version of death” because, to make a Princess Bride reference, some characters are what we would consider “all dead” and “mostly dead.” Keep reading to find out what we mean.

Asgardian Legends

The beginning of the film is BRUTAL and knocks two characters out within the first few minutes: Heimdall and Loki. Heimdall dies after he summons the last of his energy to open the bi-frost, which sends The Hulk back to Earth. Loki dies trying to outsmart Thanos.

Both characters die doing something heroic and valiant, which may be predictable for Heimdall, but is definitely new for Loki. Loki was the villain in the first Avengers movie, he was acting on Thanos’ orders to bring him the Tesseract (Space Stone). Loki could have surrendered the Tesseract as if he was fulfilling Thanos’ initial command. Not so. This time, Loki played the hero and paid dearly for it.

Half of Asgard’s refugees were also killed in the opening scene of the film. No word yet if Korg, Valkyrie, or other characters from Thor: Ragnarok made it off the ship, but Thor does say later in the film that “half of my peoeple were slaughtered,” so those characters could still be alive.

The Soul of Thanos

Gamora

The next on-screen death was even more brutal than the first two. Gamora, Star-Lord’s love, Guardian of the Galaxy, wielder of an Infinity Stone, was killed by her father’s own hand. Apparently she was the only woman in the universe who knew the location of the final Infinity Stone — the Soul Stone.

Thanos sent her on a quest for the stone before she became a Guardian, but she hid its location from him. He discovered her disloyalty by torturing Nebula. Only then did Gamora give up the stone’s location. Together, Gamora and Thanos traveled to Vormir to find the last of the six stones.

While there, they encountered the Stonekeeper (a familiar face), who explained that one can only posses the Soul Stone if he or she can let go of what they love most. Gamora laughed because she didn’t think Thanos could love anyone. She was proven wrong, however, when he admitted that he loved her. He pushed her off the edge of a cliff and was given the stone in return.

This is a shocking end for Gamora, especially considering there is another Guardians of the Galaxy movie on the horizon. Hopefully she can be saved in Avengers 4.

Without Vision the People Perish

Paul Bettany as Vision.

We knew this one was coming, but it still hurt like hell. Thanos’ minions tried to get the Mind Stone out of Vision‘s head a few different times during the film, but he was protected by both Captain America and Scarlet Witch. However, when it came to destroying the stone so Thanos couldn’t get his hands on it, Scarlet Witch had to destroy it herself. OUCH.

That’s right, Scarlet Witch killed the man she loved to save the universe. This was a theme of the film, actually, since Gamora asked Star-Lord to kill her as well, but Thanos stopped him before he could. After Scarlet Witch killed Vision, Thanos used the Time Stone to reverse time so he could go back in time and rip the stone out Vision’s head and then he died again.

It’s hard to say if Vision can come back from this, considering he died twice. But, if the Avengers can re-write time in Avengers 4 to save Gamora, hopefully they can save Vision too. If not, we just lost the MCU’s best, most purest android and Wanda just lost the love of her life.

Oh Snap

Avengers Infinity War Thanos

Lastly we have “mostly dead” characters. These are characters who vanished out of existence when Thanos snapped his fingers. This happened in quick succession at the end of the film, but we think we caught everyone. Hold onto your hearts because we lost A LOT of characters: Bucky, Black Panther, Star-Lord, Mantis, Drax, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, and Groot all vanished into thin air.

THIS WAS SO HARD TO WATCH! Steve Rogers watched Bucky vanish. Iron Man held Peter Parker in his arms as he became dust in the wind. Okoye watched her King vanish into nothing. Even Nick Fury and Maria Hill vanished during the post-credits scene. DAMMIT THANOS.

That leaves Steve Rogers, War Machine, Wong, Rocket, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Okoye, Shuri and Thor to figure out what the heck happened and how to get everyone back. Nebula is also still out there, as are Hawkeye and Ant-Man. It’s funny that everyone was wondering if Hawkeye was going to be in this film because, even though he wasn’t, he is clearly going to be an important character in Avengers 4.

Did you think this many characters were going to die in Infinity War? Are you surprised that Tony Stark and Captain America are still alive? Let us know on social or in the community pages.

Bella Hadid Makes Us Want to Wear a Crisp White Tee ASAP

Like Sharon Stone before her, Bella Hadid makes the case for pairing a classic white shirt with a more formal outfit. The twist: instead of a button down, Bella just expertly reached instead for the plain white tee. It’s a staple so wonderful that not only does everyone own one, but a band was named after it (remember the group behind “Hey There Delilah”?).

The supermodel made an appearance at the Being Serena premiere on Wednesday, April 25, in NYC with her older sister Gigi and while both ladies opted for menswear-inspired suiting (Gigi’s was colored and paired with a bralette), Bella left her blazer unbuttoned to reveal a crisp white cotton shirt. Comfortable, classic — and a fresh twist for a fancy look .

Which got Us to thinking — you can never have enough white tees. Not only should you own a few different cuts (you never know what the occasion might be or what you will need to pair them), but because they get discolored easily, you most certainly need more than one.

So, inspired by the supermodel, shop the best white t-shirts on the market and go on with your understated cool-girl model sex appeal.

What is it that makes hummus so good?

Hummus has been popping up everywhere over the last several years – from hot dog stands and restaurants to your local grocery store. Made popular by companies such as Sabra, Tribe, and Cedar, hummus is absolutely taking over America’s culinary pallet. But what is it? And why do we like it so much?

From our beginnings

Hummus is a dish which has been eaten for thousands of years around the eastern Mediterranean basin. Made by crushing garbanzo beans and mixing it with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt, this dip has been a food staple in the Levant (IE Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Israel) since humans first left Africa. As humans spread around the globe, they kept garbanzo bean seeds with them, planting them all over what is now Turkey, Greece, and the Balkans as well. That could be one of the reasons why we love it so much – as our ancient ancestors traversed the Mediterranean planes, this was what they ate. Maybe we all have some imprint in our genes to love hummus!

So many types!

The American hummus industry has been booming as of late, and the main companies producing the stuff have definitely been keeping track of what US consumers like and updating their recipes for this ancient food staple to keep up with modern tastes. Today, you can get red pepper hummus, chipotle style hummus, spinach and artichoke hummus, and even Tuscan herb hummus. You would never find most of these hummus flavors in the Middle East or Mediterranean basin. But what makes these flavors amazing (besides the taste of course) is the fact that now the United States has its own hummus with a distinctly American flair and flavor.

It’s pretty healthy for you

In terms of health, the worst part of hummus is actually the bread you dip it in! The actual paste itself is quite healthy for you. Because it’s so full of protein, your brain gets signals telling you that you are full quicker, enabling you to watch yourself if you are prone to overeating. It also contains a ton of folates which help in healthy cell reproduction, something which some scientists say helps defend against cancer. Additionally, if you are trying to cut meat out of your diet, hummus is a great vegan alternative!

So many ways to eat it

Hummus isn’t just a chip dip where you take a tiny chip and put a tiny amount of hummus on it. In the Middle East, hummus is actually a meal while the rest is just a side! And while you may want to dip carrot sticks or pretzels or cucumbers into your hummus (still very tasty), in the Levant they do it differently. In those countries, people take a fork or a piece of pita or even a piece of white onion and literally scoop it up! We’re not talking about a small little bit inside either, but actually use them like shovels to scoop up the hummus into their mouths! In Hebrew for instance, this method of eating is called “l’nagev,” meaning “wiping.” Why such a weird name? Because you’re supposed to use the bread to wipe up every last bit up from the plate!

Emma Willis makes very awkward slip-up on This Morning as she accidentally says ‘arse’ instead of ‘earth’ live on air

EMMA Willis was left mortified on today’s This Morning after accidentally saying the word “arse” instead of “earth” – right as she introduced a segment on an unsolved murder case.

Speaking about the anniversary of the disappearance of Louise Kay, Emma spoke about how she “disappeared off the face of the arse” as she struggled to get her words out.

Emma stumbled on the words and accidentally said “arse” on today’s episode
refer to caption.

Thankfully no one appeared to notice the mistake – apart from the viewers.

However, while Emma, co-host Rylan and the interview carried on without a hitch, viewers weren’t so quick to dismiss the error.

“Did she just say vanish off the face of the arse?? Ohhh my god!! 😂😂😂#thismorning” joked one.

Emma and Rylan have taken over This Morning for the week
Rex Features

One tried to defend Emma and blaming her cough for the slip-up, said: “Poor Emma Willis having a frog in her throat on live TV! The worst! #ThisMorning

But someone else responded: “In all fairness I think saying ‘disappearing off the face of the arse’ is slightly worse. #ThisMorning

Others felt bad for Emma for the epic mistake, and one wrote: “I’m howling, I can’t. Such a serious interview! “How can a person and a car just disappear from the face of the ARSE?” Oh the poor woman. 😂 #ThisMorning”

While another couldn’t resist a joke on Emma’s Big Brother catchphrase and said: “We are live on #thismorning Please do not swear Emma Willis! “Disappeard off the face of the arse” #awks

Emma is presenting this week’s This Morning episodes alongside her CBB partner-in-crime Rylan as Holly and Phil enjoy the Easter break.

Showbiz correspondent Rylan has been on hiatus from the show since the beginning of the year, taking a break for the sake of his mental health.

Emma spoke to Mark Williams-Thomas and the family of missing Louise Kay
refer to caption.

But earlier this month The Sun Online revealed he would be back, with TV insider telling us: “Rylan will be back on screen shortly – in fact, it could be as soon as next month.

“He’s part of the show’s family and always has been. Even though he took a short break, he was always going to return.”

The popular presenter left fans devastated in December when he announced he would be taking a break.

The Note: White House census stance makes immigrants’ fears worse

The TAKE with MaryAlice Parks

The White House yesterday could have tried to allay the fears of immigrants, civil right activists, and Democrats worried that the last-minute addition to the 2020 census — a question on citizenship — will significantly dampen immigrant participation.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders could have said the White House wants everyone, regardless of status, to still participate. After all, the law dictates that the federal government try to count everyone, not just citizens.

She could have reminded people of another law, too, that says census data cannot be shared with any other government agency, or she could have said plainly that people will not be deported based on the data. She could have added that the White House wants a fair and accurate count to make sure inner cities and blue states are not essentially cheated out of federal funding if people are too nervous to open their doors to census workers.

But she didn’t.

Instead she talked about needing…

Kenya Moore’s Husband Finally Makes ‘RHOA’ Debut

Kenya Moore, Marc Daly

“Real Housewives of Atlanta” actress Kenya Moore wed in secret last summer to New York-based businessman Marc Daly. She didn’t invite any co-stars to share in her big day and Bravo bosses were rumored to be pissed that cameras weren’t allowed to film the occasion.

There was even talk that Moore was close to losing that coveted Georgia peach if she continued to hide Marc from the public.

Well, it seems she’s had a change of heart because in a sneak peek of the Sunday, March 25 episode of the hit Bravo reality hit, exclusive to E! News, we finally get a glimpse of Kenya’s much-discussed hubby.

The moment comes during the viewing event for Moore’s domestic violence PSA that she and her cast mates filmed earlier this season. And of course, Sheree wants to know if she and the rest of the crew are finally going to meet Kenya’s man.

“Oh Lord,” Kenya responds. “He’s working and he was just like, ‘I can’t, but I send you my love.’”

“Aw,” Sheree says. “I’m like, ‘This is a major night for her. This is the night we’re gonna meet him!’”

As Kenya explains it, Mr. Daly can’t even get on a plane by himself. “I need to book his ticket, I need to pick out his clothes,” she tells the ladies, who appear stunned.

“Girl, that man has been flying without you his whole life,” Porsha Williams tells her frenemy.

“He has, but guess what? He is married now, so guess who he likes to take care of him?” Kenya says.

Check out the clip above to see the moment a certain someone makes a surprise appearance and how the ladies react to finally getting to meet him

“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Bravo.

Gavin Cecchini makes his Mets case, with his mouth and bat

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Gavin Cecchini bulked up and changed his swing over the winter, but realizes even if he displays vast improvement this spring, he is likely destined for Triple-A Las Vegas to begin the season. Merck Makes $394M Acquisition; CEO Opens Up About Spat With Trump

Just last September, Kenneth Frazier’s Merck finally got its long-awaited immuno-oncology drug, Keytruda, approved by the Federal Drug Administration.

Just a few months later, the pharmaceutical company is doubling down on its new area of focus.

On Wednesday, the company announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire Viralytics, an Australian biotech company for $ 394 million, which is in line with the drug maker’s focus on cancer immunotherapy.

Frazier told Black Enterprise magazine in 2014 about his company’s big plans to create transformational medicines with the company’s foyer into new investigational medicine for cancer.

“It’s one of the first in a series of what are called immunotherapies for cancer. This medicine is one that actually uses the bodies’ own natural defenses to defeat the tumors,” Frazier said. “That’s the kind of thing that a company like Merck exists to do.”

This comes on the cusp of Frazier’s interview with the New York Times about his public spat with President Donald Trump.

Frazier gave up his seat on the president’s American Manufacturing Council after controversy erupted over how President Trump handled the racist-fueled violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, last summer.

“It was my view that to not take a stand on this would be viewed as a tacit endorsement of what had happened and what was said,” Frazier told the New York Times. “I think words have consequences, and I think actions have consequences. I just felt that as a matter of my own personal conscience, I could not remain.”

Frazier said he consulted Merck’s board before he made his decision to resign from the president’s manufacturing council.

“I wanted to say that this was a statement I was making in terms of my own values, and the company’s values, and there was unanimous support for that,” he said. “My board supported that 100%.”

President Trump was quick to hit back on Twitter.

Although meant as a gibe toward Frazier, it is no secret that Merck has been working incredibly hard to bring Keytruda, the company’s own breakthrough immuno-oncology treatment drug to market.

In 2014, Merck acquired Idenix, another drug therapy for hepatitis C which had been a focal point of the drug makers. However, Merck’s patent of the drug was ruled invalid by a U.S. District Judge in Wilmington, Delaware, on Feb. 17, stating that the company did not meet a requirement that it disclose how to make the treatment it covered without undue experimentation, Reuters reported.

The ruling also reverses a $ 2.54 billion settlement Gilead Sciences Inc. was required to pay after Merck sued the company because its hepatitis C drugs Sovaldi and Harvoni infringed on Idenix’s patents.

‘There Was Nothing I Could Lose.’ Nathan Chen Redeems His Dismal Olympics and Makes Skating History

You can say what you want about the new figure skating system, but its rigid by-the-numbers scoring means even vaunted medal favorites can fall to 17th. And climb back up to fifth.

That’s exactly what the U.S.’s Nathan Chen did, orchestrating what was perhaps the greatest comeback in skating history.

Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu repeated his Olympic feat from 2014 and skated to another men’s title, while his teammate Shoma Uno earned silver and Javier Fernandez became the first Spaniard to win an Olympic figure skating medal with the bronze.

Chen, however, made a different kind of history, on a couple of levels. Known as the Quad King for being the first skater to land five quadruple jumps in a single program, Chen raised the bar again by attempting six quadruples in his go-for-broke free program at the Olympic figure skating men’s event in Gangneung Ice Arena on Saturday, landing five of them successfully.

Chen, who was in 17th place after the short program, said he “literally had nothing to lose” going into the long program, so he opted to try six quad jumps — without even telling his coach. “It was me,” he said of the decision to try six of the most challenging jumps male skaters perform. “I didn’t even tell [coach Rafael Arutunian] I was doing that.”

Chen’s monster long program score, added to his short program marks, left him at 297.35, which kept him in first place until the fifth to last skater took the ice. Even then, China’s Jin Boyang only surpassed Chen by 0.42 points.

“I definitely did want to redeem myself after the two short programs,” says Chen, who skated poorly by missing his jumps in both the team skating event and the individual men’s short program. “And I definitely did that here. Honestly, I am human, I make mistakes. Unfortunately it happened at a really bad time.”

“His long program will be talked about forever,” says Kurt Browning, four-time world champion and three-time Olympian for Canada. Chen, in fact, won the free skate portion of the men’s event, by a comfortable 8.91 points over Hanyu, who had the second highest free skate score after a flawed program in which he stepped out of a quadruple toe loop and a triple lutz and landed four quads. Uno, too fell on his opening quad jump. “Right now [Chen] is a kid going, I just kicked in the long program, and I totally would have won this thing, man,” says Browning. But his low short program score meant he couldn’t leap to the podium unless the top skaters also faltered, and badly.

Chen admitted that while he said he would talk to his coach and training team about what to do next after his dismal short program on Friday, he actually didn’t. “I just went straight back to my bed and just lay there,” he says. “I just fell asleep, and I think that helped a lot.”

Chen also talked to his mother, who advised him to attack and fight for everything in the long program, and to remember that his performance in the short programs did not reflect who he was and what he was capable of doing.

The disastrous short program placement might have actually been a blessing for Chen in the end; with nothing to lose, the world saw what a powerful and talented skater Chen really is. In the stands, Browning, who was the first skater to land a certified quadruple jump in competition (at the 1988 world championships) could empathize with what Chen was feeling. Browning too was a gold medal favorite leading into the 1994 Olympics, but dropped to 12th after the short program. He too skated a lights-out free program and pulled himself up to fifth place. “He doesn’t even know who I am, but he and I have a lot in common,” says Browning. “Maybe some day we’ll have a long talk. Because I can help him move forward.”

Paul Wylie, Olympic silver medalist, says Chen’s feat is a reflection of the stratospheric levels to which men’s skating is reaching. “He’s 18 and he’s grown up with quad jumps,” Wylie says. “These are his triple [jumps]. In his mind the sky is the limit; he’s thinking I’m 18 and maybe I’ll do a quadruple axel, or maybe I’ll do a quint.”

Chen received credit for five of the quad jumps, but stumbled on landing the quad flip and received some deductions for placing his hands on the ice. “It was risky,” he says of attempting the record-breaking number of quad jumps, “It was hard, but there was nothing I could lose at that point. I just wanted to put them out there and see what happened.”

Chen wasn’t the only skater to make history. Teammate Vincent Zhou, who finished sixth, became the first skater to land a quad lutz, the most challenging quad jump, at the Olympics. Hanyu is only the second skater to repeat as Olympic champion, after the U.S.’s Dick Button in 1948 and 1952. And Fernandez earned his country’s first ever medal in figure skating.

For Hanyu, the title didn’t come easily. He injured his ankle after practicing a quad jump in November, and has not competed since then. “I just thought, ‘skate,’” he says of his comeback. “Just think about skating all day, all week, every day. And I trusted.”

For the U.S. men, the competition was an unexpected ride of ups and downs. While Chen struggled in the short program, teammate Adam Rippon impressed with two clean programs and finished 10th, and also laid down an impressive skate in the team event, which helped to earn the U.S. team a bronze. “To complete three clean programs, and have a top 10 finish in the individual event and a bronze medal, this is sort of like a dream Olympic Games for me,” says Rippon, whose mother, brother and sister were in the arena waving an American flag. His huge personality while competing, and his embrace of his role as a voice for LGBTQ youth helped to earn him legions of new fans, who applauded his performances and his bravery in competing as the first openly gay athlete at a Winter Olympics.

The youngest member of the 2018 U.S. Olympic team, Zhou also had a commendable debut. Not only did he become the first skater to land a quad lutz at the Olympics (in the short program), but he also executed five quads in his free program and ended up in sixth.

If there was anything the men’s Olympic skating event proved, it was that the high level of technical skill required to compete can be both a blessing and a curse. Because the points system rewards high value tricks like quad jumps, skating officials are discussing whether they cap the number of quadruple jumps they allow in a program. “It will be interesting to see what happens after the Olympics,” says Wylie. “Since the event has been so driven by the technical elements will there be a rejiggering of the artistic mark and strategies to get more artistic performances?”

Chen, for one, managed to turn the technical monkey that plagued his short program into a gift in his free skate. He wouldn’t admit it at first, but Chen says the pressure of competing at his first Games might have gotten to him initially. “As much as I tried to deny it, I think I did feel the pressure a lot before the short program, especially thinking about medals and placement and things that are completely out of my control. That tightened me up, and I was really cautious out on the ice, which is not the right way to skate. Being in such a low placement going into the long program, I allowed myself to completely forget about expectations, and allowed myself to be myself.”

Which turns out to be a pretty good comeback artist.

Dancing Isn’t the Only Thing That Makes Jenna Dewan Tatum’s Legs Look Fab

Jenna Dewan Tatum knows how to rock a red carpet — that’s no secret. Whether she’s wearing killer heels and the most daring naked dresses, she always keeps it real. Seriously — so when she revealed that she uses a shimmering product cocktail on her legs to get them in their most gorgeous, gleaming shape possible in an Instagram story, we only loved her more.

In a video snippet she posted to her Instagram Story, the World of Dance host posed her gams with her makeup artist Alan Avendano blending shimmer and bronzer all over them with the caption, “It’s all smoke and mirrors.” In the background of the shot, you can see a number of shimmering products that were surely used to create a contoured and slimmed look for her legs! Much like how you[ would use shimmer on the high points of your face to highlight and a deeper contouring color to shade, the same applies for your stems.

Want to attempt the technique for yourself? We suggest an all-in-one shimmering body blur product like Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body to get the job done in one go.

This isn’t the first time that Dewan has gotten candid about her beauty routine or the truth behind her flawless bod. In fact, she has even posed on Instagram in her Spanx proving that there is no shame in a little shapewear! The Step Up star also likes to have a killer glow on her face — and has made fun of herself by likening it to a glazed donut. The shimmering and brightening technique conceals a night of poor sleep and quickly brings the complexion alive. If you want a more subtle highlighter or illuminator, RMS Living Luminizer is a great bet.

Which brings us to our next question: what is the next beauty secret that Dewan will shed light on with her social media? Whatever it is, we know she’ll come at it with a sense of humor. And bless her for it.

The best models of all time (…and what makes a supermodel super?)

Cindy’s in a major Omega campaign, Naomi’s back on the catwalk and Donatella broke the internet with her reunion of the ‘famous five’ for the Versace SS18 show. As the original supers stalk back into the spotlight, here’s our edit of the best models of all time.

90s supermodel reunion
90s supermodel reunion

Introduction by Autumn Whitefield-Madrano

If you were old enough to reach a newsagent counter in 1990, you’ll remember that cover: Naomi, Linda, Tatjana, Christy and Cindy, high-glam action figures clustered together, gazing at us on the front of January Vogue. Even those of us who fancied ourselves too lofty for supermodel daydreams were entranced by Peter Lindbergh’s black and white photo, elevated from the realm of fashion and approaching something closer to cinema. It was the image that kicked off the era of supermodel mania. If you weren’t old enough the first time round, you’ll definitely remember a certain Instagram-breaking moment last September – a similarly Amazonian line-up of Cindy, Claudia, Naomi, Carla and Helena, reunited on the Versace SS18 catwalk. The ‘supermodel’ has come full circle – quite literally in the case of these returning stars, whose stock has never been higher than now.

The original gang, a bit like the Spice Girls, had someone for everyone. Naomi Campbell: assertive, playful yet exquisite, the obvious icon not only for young black women, but for those who coveted her haughty ‘I’m worth it’ chutzpah. Linda Evangelista: chameleon-like with her ever-changing hair colour, yet always unmistakable, and admired for the gumption of saying she wouldn’t get out of bed for less than $ 10,000 a day. Christy Turlington, with her calm doe-eyed gaze and impossibly perfect features that looked carved from soapstone. Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz, the smiling, can-do faces of athletic vigour on each side of the pond. That cover was shot more than a quarter of a century ago, yet ask most people to name a supermodel, and chances are at least one member of this quintet will roll instantly off the tongue.

Not that they were the first to be termed ‘supermodels’. The word has been bandied about since 1891, when painter Henry Stacy Marks rhapsodised about a certain variety of sitter: ‘The “super” model… goes in for theatrical effect; always has an expression of “Ha! Ha! More blood…”’ With each person dubbed a ‘supermodel’ over the 75 years it took for the term to take hold, the profession took form. To be a supermodel is to be an entity larger than that of fashion plate: Lisa Fonssagrives, a Swede widely considered to be the very first of the type, is perhaps known as such because she leveraged her modelling streak of the 40s into a fashion-design career. You also need to be instantly recognisable, to have a Cindy Crawford-mole USP, if you will: when Dorian Leigh – another candidate for the world’s first supermodel – met legendary editor Diana Vreeland, Mrs V told her, ‘Do not – do not do anything to those eyebrows!’ Perhaps it’s about celebrity (Twiggy prompted The New York Times’ first use of the word, in 1968), or an unshakeable self-belief (Janice Dickinson claimed she coined the term in 1979, which is patently untrue).

If the 1990 quintet were the first graduating class of modern supermodels, Kate Moss was its first rogue scholar. She seized the public eye in a singular fashion: she was unhealthily skinny, the story went, and then there was that whole ‘heroin chic’ thing. Plus, she didn’t care, or at least she didn’t look like she did. That deadpan expression, that flatness echoed by the broad planes of her face – teenage girls who couldn’t disguise that they cared desperately about boys, good grades and being liked were probably infuriated by her insouciance, consoling themselves by silently thinking, ‘She isn’t even that pretty.’

It’s this, I now see, that made her a supermodel. Kate Moss is no gargoyle; she doesn’t even qualify as jolie laide. But her face was the next logical step from the template that her supermodel elders had etched. Evangelista et al were jaw-droppingly beautiful, none of them dabbled in plebeian prettiness. Kate, with her much-mentioned (in model terms) shortness, ‘bandy’ legs and gappy smile, had the same magnetism and uniqueness they all share. Mere beauty isn’t what set them apart. To earn the ‘super’ prefix, a model doesn’t have to be the most beautiful model nor does she have to be the most commercially successful. She has to have that ineffable quality known as ‘It’, even as her It-ness is conferred upon a supermodel largely after her christening. She has to be comfortable with that, inhabit it and use it to her advantage. ‘There was nothing like these girls,’ says Sasha Charnin Morrison, who witnessed the rise of the supermodel during her 30-plus years in fashion publishing, including stints as fashion director at Harper’s Bazaar, Allure and Us Weekly. ‘When they said things like, “I don’t get out of bed for less than $ 10,000 a day,” that made complete sense. They were worth every penny.’

And they were, for a while. The predecessor to the model was the mannequin; models were referred to as ‘live mannequins’ before we settled upon our current term. A model’s job is to wear clothes, to be dressed, styled and passively done unto. The supermodels turned this on its head – the essence of feminism is the ability to have a choice, and these women were the ones doing the choosing. They were in control of their bodies, careers and the clothes they agreed to wear – and they sold them. It is less about possessing beauty and more about possessing a ‘look’– one that can shift depending on circumstance and styling, of course. A model asks that you look at her as a part of the whole – the fashion, the make-up, the hair, the mise-en-scène. A supermodel asks no such thing; she demands, and in doing so makes it clear that it is her essence that should remain indelible in your mind.

Which was, of course, their downfall. By 1998, Time had declared the death of the supermodel, with good reason. Moss walked for Alexander McQueen in spring 1997; a year and a half later, his showstopping Joan of Arc show featured relative nobodies. Designers wanted their creations to take centre stage, and magazine covers used actresses when they wanted recognition, and lesser-known models when they wanted  the face of ‘relatability’ – the idea being that readers better project their own identity on to a blank canvas, unaccompanied by the overwhelming individuality of a Cindy or a Naomi.

Today’s supermodels may not have inherited their predecessors’ iconic status as models, but their DNA carries other imprints: business acumen (Cindy founded an empire on fitness videos before YouTube was a twinkle in Steve Chen’s eye), brand relationships, distinct yet pliant identities. While the originals were made into stars by endless press coverage, social media has allowed Gigi, Bella and Kendall to create stars of themselves. They aren’t at the mercy of the press for their image; they create their own personae, controlling what to reveal and what to conceal. With this ability to generate mystery, the new supermodel has mastered the catch-22 of It-ness, along with the business savvy that goes with the title. What remains to be seen is whether they will develop the quality that sees a quorum of the Vogue five working into their 50s – the ability to compel. When you look at Naomi Campbell lounging on a bed, gazing into the camera with a languid tease, you see light. Perhaps you envy her, but your deeper envy belongs to the photographer, able to watch her transcendence from behind the safety of the lens. You can’t tear your eyes away.

Scroll down for our best models ever hall of fame…

1. Suzy Parker

Era: Late 1940s – early 1960s
From: New York
Her look: Freckly and flame-haired with an hourglass figure
USP: A favourite muse of photographer Richard Avedon, her sister Dorian was a famous model, dubbed the ‘world’s first supermodel’. That was before the world met Suzy. She went on to eclipse her sis, becoming the first model to earn $ 100,000 per year and the only one to have an (unreleased) Beatles song named after her

2. Twiggy (AKA Lesley Hornby)

Era: 1960s
From: Neasden, North-West London
Her look: Bambi – after a few weeks of no dinner. Big eyes, spidery lashes and a skinny twig-like frame (hence the nickname).
USP: Invented the Swinging Sixties – with a little help from the Beatles, Carnaby Street, et al. Discovered at 16 when she had her hair chopped off in hairdresser Leonard’s West End salon – a fashion journalist saw the pictures, and the rest is history.

3. Veruschka

Era: 1960s
From: Kaliningrad, Russia.
Her look: A lionine mane of blonde hair and the kind of versatile face that could take any look – fake ‘eyes’ on her eyelids, being covered in gold leaf… You name it, she pulled it off
USP: Her blue blood and fascinating family. Real name: Vera Gottliebe Anna Gräfin von Lehndorff-Steinort. Her mother was a Prussian countess and her father was a German count who was an active member of the Resistance – he was eventually executed for an assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler.

4. Penelope Tree

Era: 1960s
From: UK
Her look: Saucer eyes, spiky lashes and poker-straight hair. ‘An Egyptian Jimminy Cricket’ according to her then-boyfriend, cheeky chappie photographer David Bailey.
USP: Super-connected socialite roots – brought up in the US, her mother was an American socialite descended from famous social activist Endicott Peabody. Her British MP dad threatened to sue if her first-ever photos (by legendary photographer Diane Arbus) were published.

5. Jean Shrimpton (AKA ‘The Shrimp’)

Era: 1960s
From: High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire
Her look: Delicate, snub-nosed perfection
USP: Yet another David Bailey conquest, she started her affair with him when he was still married to his first wife, who he divorced to be with Shrimpton. Described as having ‘the world’s most beautiful face’, everything she wore (even barely visible in a beauty campaign) was always a sell-out

6. Pat Cleveland

Era: 1960s-Present
From: New York
Her look: European-style beauty with a free-flowing mane of black hair
USP: One of the most famous black models to break through fashion’s exclusionary policies of the 60s, she was named ‘the all-time superstar model’ by former US Vogue editor, André Leon Talley. Modelling for designers from Valentino to Yves Saint Laurent, it was on the runway where she really established her fame, bringing her own theatrical style. She moved to Paris in 1970, refusing to return to the US until 1974, the year Vogue first featured a black model on their cover.

7. Lauren Hutton

Era: 1970s-present. Yup, she’s still going, modelling for The Row, Club Monaco and jewellery brand Alexis Bittar in recent years
From: Charleston, South Carolina
Her look: Two words: gap teeth. After trying to disguise the gap with mortician’s wax, she eventually refused to have them ‘fixed’, heralding a new era of healthy body image and natural imagery in modelling
USP: The first model to score a big-bucks beauty contract, negotiating $ 400,000 to be the ‘face’ of Revlon in 1973. Appeared on the cover of Vogue a record 41 times. Not forgetting her eight-page nude magazine photoshoot – at the age of 61.

8. Beverly Johnson

Era: 1970s
From: Buffalo, New York
Her look: Chisel-jawed glamour

USP: Credited with forcing fashion to take black women seriously, she was the first African-American model to appear on the cover of US Vogue in 1974 and ditto French Elle in 1975. Also an actress, she’s appeared in everything from Law & Order to Sabrina, the Teenage Witch in recent years

9. Christie Brinkley

Era: 1970s and 1980s
From: Michigan, USA
Her look: Cookie-cutter California Girl personified (she was brought up in LA) – toned and tanned with a perma-grin
USP: She had the longest-running beauty contract of any model, ever – 25 years as the face of Cover Girl. Along with 500 magazine covers, including 3 consecutive Sports Illustrated swimwear issue covers – quite the coup in the 1980s. Also: a spell as Mrs Billy Joel.

10. Cindy Crawford

Era: 1980s and 1990s
From: Illinois, USA
Her look: Big hair, strong brows, athletic body. Hang on, have we forgotten something? Oh yes. The most famous mole OF ALL TIME.
USP: Brains and business acumen. She nearly ended up as a chemical engineer and invented the celebrity workout video with her famous ‘Cindy Crawford: Shape Your Body’ exercise series, raking in a fortune in the process.

11. Claudia Schiffer

Era: 1980s and 1990s
From: Rheinberg, Germany
Her look: Teutonic Brigitte Bardot
USP: Holds the world record for most amount of magazine covers, as listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Was hand-selected by Karl Lagerfeld for his Chanel campaigns and remained one of his favourites for years. But what can top being ‘guillotined’ by permatanned magician David Copperfield (her fiance from 1994-1999) live on stage?

12. Helena Christensen

Era: 1980s-present
From: Copenhagen, Denmark
Her look: Enigmatic and olive-skinned, thanks to her mixed Danish/Peruvian heritage
USP: Former Miss Universe Denmark with serious creative skills. She wanted to be a musician and has run her own fashion boutiques (including Butik in New York) and clothing lines. A successful photographer, she was the launch creative director of Nylon magazine, and has held exhibitions of her work

13. Linda Evangelista

Era: 1980s-present
From: Ontario, Canada
Her look: Hawk-nosed chameleon, with ever-changing hair. Long before ‘The Rachel’, it was all about ‘The Linda’ – her 1989 gamine crop that became famous the world over, inspiring wigs and other celebrities (hello, Demi Moore in Ghost).
USP: The feisty models’ model. It was she who uttered the infamous phrase, ‘We don’t wake up for less than $ 10,000 a day,’ referring to her and her fellow supermodel gang. She’s credited with setting a new benchmark for models’ fees and caused controversy by reportedly earning sky-high sums for walking in catwalk shows for the big houses.

14. Kristen McMenamy

Era: 1980s-present
From:
Pennsylvania, USA
Her look:
Other-worldly androgynous. Legendary model agent Eileen Ford advised her to have cosmetic surgery – luckily, she pressed on with her unique look
USP:
Ushered in the era of grunge in 1992. Some might say she actually started it, by chopping her long red hair off and letting Francois Nars shave her eyebrows for an Anna Sui catwalk show. Cue international recognition and a starring role in fashion shoots with titles like ‘Grunge & Glory.’ Combined with her theatrical poses and runway ‘walk’, she’s still your go-to girl for high-fashion drama.

15. Christy Turlington

Era: 1980s-present
From: California (her mother is from El Salvador), USA
Her look: Doe-eyed serenity – the embodiment of Calvin Klein’s fragrance Eternity, one of her most famous campaigns.
USP: The Zen One. Having launched her own Ayurvedic skincare line and yoga range, she’s now a prominent campaigner for maternal health in the developing world. She studied for a masters’ degree in public health and launched Every Mother Counts, a non-profit organisation that supports maternal health programmes in countries including Malawi, Uganda, and Indonesia, as well as directing a 2010 documentary on the subject, No Woman, No Cry

16. Elle Macpherson
Era: 1980s-present
From: Sydney, Australia
Her Look: Athletic girl-next-door with surfboard abs
USP: She’s graced the cover of a record five Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues, earning herself the nickname ‘The Body’. She had a ‘Body’-off with Heidi Klum after Klum referred to herself using the same nickname in an advertisement for a Victoria’s Secret bra. Savvy businesswoman to boot, she’s made millions with her lingerie line Elle Macpherson Intimates and was also head judge of Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model for three years from 2010.
17. Naomi CampbellEra: 1980s-present
From: Streatham, South London
Her look: Perfectly symmetrical with pillowy pout and serious (some might say ferocious) attitude.
USP: Where shall we start?
The good: The first black model to appear on the cover of US Vogue’s key September issue (in 1989)
Forced the fashion industry to up their bookings of black girls (her pal Yves Saint Laurent threatened to pull his advertising if they didn’t)
Starred in a Bob Marley music video at age 7
Took fashion’s most famous tumble on a pair of Vivienne Westwood mega-platforms
Was called ‘honorary granddaughter’ by Nelson Mandela
Has worked non-stop for charity – including raising £4.5 million (and counting) for disaster relief through her own Fashion For Relief foundation
The bad: Um. Convincted of assault four times and accused of various forms of assault or abuse by no less than 9 employees and associates
Was forced to appear in a 2010 war crimes trial against former Liberian president Charles Taylor after apparently receiving a ‘blood diamond’ from him. She denied any knowledge.18. Kate MossEra: 1980s-present
From: Croydon, South London
Her look: The Game-Changer: ‘short’ (5’7″), slightly bow-legged, gap-toothed, freckly… The anti-glamazon.
USP: The ultimate muse. She rarely speaks, but that’s OK because all other significant cultural voices do it for her. An 18-carat statue of her worth £1.5m created in 2008 for the British Museum was the largest gold statue created since Ancient Egyptian times, a painting of her by Lucian Freud was sold for £3.9 million in 2005, and she’s inspired every fashion photographer from Corinne Day to Mario Testino. Not to mention musicians, including her exes Pete Doherty and Jamie Hince. We won’t start on her actual style. If it wasn’t for her, would ‘Get The Look’ fashion pages even exist?19. Gisele Bundchen

Era: 1990s-present
From: Southern Brazil.
Her look: Brazilian bombshell who brought the sexy back. Sunkissed hair, sunkissed limbs, and a special Zoolander-tastic stride known as the ‘horse walk’ – knees up, feet kicking out in front.
USP: She’s been the highest-paid model in the world every year since 2004. She wore the most expensive lingerie ever created in the 2000 Victoria’s Secret show (the ‘Red Hot Fantasy Bra’ worth $ 15 million) and she’s chalked up over 350 ad campaigns and 1,200 magazine covers.

20. Natalia Vodianova

Era: 1990s-present
From: Gorky, Soviet Union (now Russia)
Her look: Dreamy innocent with piercing blue eyes
USP: Rags to riches tale following a heartbreaking early start – born into extreme poverty and with a disabled half-sister, she sold fruit on the street as a child to help family finances, before ending up as Viscountess Portman after marrying English property heir Justin Portman. Now goes out with equally illustrious Antoine Arnault, son of LVMH founder Bernard Arnault, and is a mother of four. Yes, four. And she can still shimmy into an Italian sample-size catwalk look

21. Erin O’Connor

Era: 1990s-present
From: West Midlands
Her look: Unconventional, angular and aristocratic
USP: The favourite muse of fashion’s great creatives, including Alexander McQueen (where she played a madwoman trapped in a glass cage for one of his early shows, Lunatic Asylum), John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier, who ‘discovered’ her. One of the few living people to appear on a Royal Mail postage stamp, part of a specially-commissioned set shot by photographer Nick Knight.

22. Alek Wek

Era: 1995-Present
From: Wau, South Sudan
Her look: Strong, unique and exotic
USP: Dark-skinned models were almost unheard of in the high fashion industry before Wek came along. After being scouted by Models 1 age 14 she became a huge influence on changing beauty ideals and went on to grace the covers of Elle, i-D, Glamour and Cosmopolitan, as well as appearing in editorials for Vogue. She fled her native Sudan in 1991 to escape the civil war and now devotes time to work with UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders and World Vision.

23. Agyness Deyn

Era: 2000s
From: Greater Manchester
Her look: Punky bleached crop and down-to-earth, non-model ‘walk’.
USP: Best mates with teenage pal Henry Holland, it’s fair to say she helped launch his career while he helped launched hers. Her first job was in a chip shop in Rossendale. Now a bona fide serious actress, starring in West End play The Leisure Society and films including Electricity (2013) and Patient Zero (2015)

24. Jessica Stam

Era: 2000s-present
From: Ontario, Canada
Her look: Elfin porcelain-doll pretty, with feline eyes
USP: She inspired one of the original It bags, the Marc Jacobs ‘Stam’ – a quilted, ladylike frame bag – in 2005. Demand was so high, waiting lists had to be closed. A glammer claim to fame than being the world’s most beautiful dentist – her original career plan.

25. Mariacarla Boscono

Era: 2000s
From: Rome (with a well-travelled childhood featuring spells in Florida, Italy and Kenya)
Her look: Black-haired, pale-skinned Sicilian-widow glamour
USP: Has appeared in the Pirelli calendar 3 times. She’s earned a place in fashion history as long-running muse to Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci – she’s basically the human embodiment of his dark, Latin-infused aesthetic.

26. Daria Werbowy

Era: 2000s
From: Krakow, Poland (she grew up in Canada)
Her look: Tawny, leggy, panther-like grace
USP: A true fashion models’ model, she holds the all-time record for opening and closing the most shows in a single season. Her long, lithe limbs and cool, natural beauty have been seen in everything from Balmain (the image of her in then-designer Christophe Decarnin’s 2010 collection with its ripped khaki vests, sharp-shouldered military jackets and skinny leather jeans sparked a thousand copycats) to Vogue Paris shoots galore.

27. Liu Wen

Era: 2000s
From: Hunan, China
Her look: Delicate features topped off with sweet dimples
USP: Dubbed ‘the first Chinese supermodel’ by reductionists everywhere, it can’t be denied that she’s done a lot to bridge the gap between East and West as far as fashion’s concerned. The first East-Asian model to star in the Victoria’s Secret show, the first East-Asian spokesmodel for Estée Lauder and the first Asian model to make Forbes magazine’s annual highest-paid model ranking. Also riveting: she claims she’s never had a boyfriend.

28. Cara Delevingne
Era: 2010s
From: West London
Her look: Angel face with beetle brows
USP: Aristo with attitude. Impressive array of comedy facial expressions (tongue-out selfie, anyone?) and ‘don’t give a ****’ approach. Her family’s posher than a princess (relatives include a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret, baronets and viscounts aplenty and two Lord Mayors of London) but she’s not shy about her undercut or indeed about being bisexual, currently dating female singer St Vincent.29. Edie CampbellEra: 2010s
From: Westbourne Grove, West London
Her look: Unique combo of haughty and kooky – sullen stare, fine features and punky crop
USP: A talented jockey, she won the first-ever ladies charity race, The Magnolia Cup, at Goodwood in 2011. No wonder Burberry have snapped her up to convey classy Brit cool personified in ad campaigns galore.

30. Jourdan Dunn
Era: 2000s-present
From: Greenford, West London
Her look: Razor-sharp cheekbones and a sultry, sleepy gaze
USP: In 2008, she was (sadly) the first black model to walk in a Prada show for over a decade. Now a poster girl for diversity in modelling, causing controversy when she posted on social media that she’d been rejected from a Dior couture show for her boobs and not her skin colour, which she said is what ‘usually happens’. Also a role model for young single mums everywhere – she had her son, Riley, at 19, and has spoken about his battle with sickle-cell anaemia.

31. Kendall Jenner

Era: 2010s-present
From: LA
Her look: High-fashion version of the Kardashian LookTM
USP: When you book Kendall, you book access to 35 MILLION devoted social media followers. Yup, she was definitely paying attention when Kris ‘n’ Kim were working out the global domination master plan. Google have named her as the second most-searched-for model in the world, and Adweek claimed she generates $ 236,000 for a single Tweet. The Instagirl generation has arrived.
