On the trail of Mary, Queen of Scots

A major new film about the 16th-century queen will put the castles and battlefields of her tragic final days back in the spotlight. We follow in her blood-soaked footsteps

Patty Vengeance is really into Mary, Queen of Scots: “She’s seen as this feminist icon. For me, though, it’s more that she’s relatable – as a strong woman and a survivor.”

The 29-year-old writer and musician, who fronts the riot grrrl band Fistymuffs, is standing by the edge of the water in Leith, where, according to a plaque set into the quayside, Mary arrived from France in the haar-veiled early morning of 19 August 1561. The widowed teenager – tall, red-haired, an unearthly beauty – was the anointed ruler of Scotland, and she had come home.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Gorgeous Costumes of 'Mary Poppins Returns'

If Mary Poppins ever left the nanny game, she’d be primed for a career in fashion. There’s something almost Wintour-ian about her careful posture and stern lines, but Mary Poppins is way more of an influencer than one to be influenced. As the character who first debuted in Mary Poppins will reappear on the big screen in Mary Poppins Returns, out December 19, Academy Award winning costume designer Sandy Powell had to decide how this Mary – whose reemergence is set 25 years after…

A Guide to the Enchanting Music of 'Mary Poppins Returns'

In an abandoned section of an old park in Depression-era London, with streets so dark, shadows merely shimmer like suggestions of shadows, a group of lamplighters – clad in jackets, vests, and clothes that would be almost dapper if not how worked-in they look – gather beneath streetlamps with ladders and on bicycles.

They’re performing “Trip a Little Light Fantastic” – an energetic, contagious song and dance number – the song in the forthcoming Mary…

Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode in David Gordon Green's Halloween (above), a sequel that arrives 40 years after John Carpenter's classic original. Defying modest expectations, the low-budget thriller earned the best opening weekend in the history of the horror franchise, taking in an estimated $ 77.5 million at the box office; critical reaction has been favorable as well.

Aretha Franklin Tribute Brings Out Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Mary Mary and More at the 2018 American Music Awards [Video]

Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans and Mary Mary came together at the American Music Awards Tuesday to pay tribute to the late Aretha Franklin.

via Billboard:

Following a special video homage to the legendary Queen of Soul that focused on the artist’s long history as a host, performer and winner at the AMAs, Knight took the stage to perform Franklin’s drawn-out interpretation of “Amazing Grace.” Then, minister and gospel singer McClurkin relieved Knight to perform “Climb Higher Mountains,” which was used as the recessional song at her funeral.

From there, gospel legend Winans delivered a rousing rendition of “Mary Don’t You Weep,” followed by R&B/jazz singer Ledisi belting an invigorating “How I Got Over.” Contemporary gospel duo Mary Mary closed things out with a backing ensemble-assisted “Old Landmark.”

“What an amazing night!” was all host Tracie Ellis-Ross could say in review after.

Check out a clip of the performance below!
