The Slit Dress Is Back, Freeing the Legs of Kate Middleton and Nearly Every Woman at Cannes

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast / Photos Getty

At the Cannes Film Festival this week, Selena Gomez, Julianne Moore, Amber Heard, Chloë Sevigny, Carla Bruni, Eva Longoria, Romee Strijd, Alessandra Ambrosio—and their respective legs—heralded the return of cut-to-there slit dresses.

That an army of toned, bare legs would storm the beachfront event this year is somewhat expected. The Cannes dress code has long decried a kind of antiquated Hollywood glamour, where slinkiness is celebrated and stilettos are a requirement.

None of the slits go as high as they did when Bella Hadid took the medium to new, impossible heights in 2016, attending the festival in a silk, red Alexandre Vauthier get-up.

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle apparently have an ‘agreement’ to get along in public

Here’s what we know…

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have fallen victim to the rumour mill this year.

The two millennial Duchesses, both 37, have endured an endless stream of online bullying since becoming royals, particularly around the continuous speculation of a feud between the two women, something that according to sources has been blown way out of proportion.

It has since emerged that the royal feud actually had more to do with Prince William and Harry, rather than their wives, but according to royal expert Katie Nicholl, there is still tension between the two Duchesses, something they are keen to iron out.

REX

‘I do think there is some truth to there having been some tension — not just between the duchesses but between the dukes as well,’ Nicholl explained to Glamour. ‘As we all know, things can gather momentum pretty quickly. So while I think there’s been tension, I don’t believe there has been some feud.’

She continued: ‘I do know that Meghan and Kate have come to an agreement to get along, to make an effort, to be amiable and warm toward each other in public. They both realise it’s in neither of their interests to have these catfight headlines. It’s not what either of them want.’

REX

Last month, the two royal women shared a sweet public hug at Commonwealth Day, something that sources have explained wasn’t spontaneous, with Kate reportedly knowing that the cameras would be watching, wanting to send a positive message to the world before Meghan’s maternity leave.

‘They might not have a huge amount in common, but Kate has no issue with Meghan,’ a source told Vanity Fair. ‘She wants them to get along, not just for Harry’s sake but because two royal sisters-in-law at loggerheads wouldn’t be good, and Kate knows that. For Kate, it’s about keeping their relationship professional and putting on a show of togetherness.’

Well, thank goodness for that.

William Middleton Strikes Deal With HarperCollins for Karl Lagerfeld Book

Well, that didn’t take long.
William Middleton, a former Paris bureau chief of WWD and W magazine, just signed a book deal with HarperCollins to write “an unconventional biography” of Karl Lagerfeld and how he turned himself into a cultural icon. Lagerfeld died Feb. 19.
Middleton, who met Lagerfeld in 1995, did many stories with him when he worked in Paris and developed a friendship along the way.  Middleton is the author of “Double Vision,” about the powerful art-world family headed by Dominique and John de Menil that was published last spring.
Middleton said he had proposed a book to Lagerfeld about a year ago, and the designer was not interested in delving into his past. “I don’t think the history of Karl is the most interesting part. There are some elements of his past that are interesting. But it’s really what he turned himself into that’s so fascinating. I didn’t want to do a normal biography,” he said.
Immediately after Lagerfeld died, Middleton wrote a three-page proposal and e-mailed his agent, Binky Urban at ICM. “By 9 a.m., she had me on the phone [with HarperCollins vice president and executive editor Sara Nelson] and we had a contract the next week. It all

Kate Middleton Discovers Trousers—and a Fresh Sense of Style

Photo Illustration by Kelly Caminero/The Daily Beast/Getty

“Pants!!!” fashion bloggers screamed through their keyboards this week, after Kate Middleton attended a charity engagement in pleated navy trousers from Jigsaw, a fashion label she worked for as an accessories buyer in the early aughts.

The look was instantly cited as an example of Middleton taking a page out of Meghan Markle’s stylebook. Markle wore many tailored pants before pregnancy relegated her to a few months of maternity dresses (often paired with stilettos, which Markle absolutely commands).

But it was not the first time the duchess swapped her favored fit-and-flare dress for something more business casual.

Kate Middleton Wears Mulberry, Carolina Herrera on Visit to Northern Ireland

As the world impatiently waits for the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, to give birth this spring, another Duchess has flown a bit under the radar.
That all changed as Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, made news this week when she joined Prince William on a surprise trip to Northern Ireland on Wednesday, where the two focused on the region’s youth by visiting outreach programs and charities.
While the trip consisted of a soccer game and kayaking, Middleton still showed off her signature, elegant style on the visit. Middleton started the two-day trip wearing a red Carolina Herrera coat with L.K. Bennett heels on her visit to the Irish Football Association in Belfast.

Anne Hathaway has taken parenting advice from Kate Middleton

Anne Hathaway

Being a first time mum is no easy task, and so it always helps to get advice from other parents. Anne Hathaway found herself in just that situation, and she borrowed a very useful parenting tip… from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The actor shares a two-year-old son, Jonathan, with husband Adam Shulman, and revealed she had adopted a ‘very cool’ technique after seeing them do it.

Speaking to The Sunday Times Style magazine, she said: ‘They get down on the child’s level and speak to them eye to eye to make their child feel empowered. I thought that was really cool. I started doing that with Jonathan.’

The technique is apparently called ‘active listening’, which involves parents crouching down to make eye contact with their children to make them feel important and respected, and William and Kate do it a lot withe Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

In the interview, Anne also opened up about being a mother to her son, saying, ‘He’s so beautiful. I’m not perfect, but if I’m frustrated or distracted, I’m good at making sure he’s sage and walking away, calming down and then coming back to him. I fall short every day, but i’m not going to beat myself up about it, I’m going to learn from it.’

Amen.

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton Reveal the New Rules of Royal Dressing

Photo illustration by The Daily Beast

What does Meghan Markle wear when she’s at home, baking her famous banana bread or roasting a chicken with Prince Harry, as the couple is known to do? It’s hard to imagine Meghan kicking back in a pair of old sweats and a Northwestern hoodie. Maybe her loungewear of choice is somewhat athleisure-ly—after all, in 2015 the former actress did declare “Yoga is my thing.”

It’s understandable if you’re bored at the thought of Markle looking a lot like you do, watching true crime on a weeknight in her telltale messy bun. We like it when Markle, per her tabloid moniker, sparkles.

This week, the Duchess of Sussex reminded us that she can do just that when, at five months pregnant, she stepped out in a head-to-toe sequined gown by Roland Mouret.

Kate Middleton had the best reaction when a kid asked if Queen Elizabeth eats pizza

Kate Middleton had the best reaction when a kid asked if Queen Elizabeth eats pizza

It appears pizza is not on the menu when Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth get together. The royal mom of three, who celebrated her 37th birthday last week, was peppered with questions from children during her visit to the King Henry’s Walk Garden in the London borough of Islington on Tuesday, January 15th. As they made pizzas that would be cooked in an outdoor oven and talked about how fun it is to learn outside, one little girl wasn’t afraid to ask the big questions.

“Has the Queen ever had pizza?” 8-year-old Nadirah inquired, but Kate was stumped. “You know, that’s such a good question. I don’t know,” she responded. “I don’t know. Maybe next time I see her, shall I ask?”

Darren McGrady, who previously served as a personal chef to the 92-year-old monarch, told The Telegraph that she sticks to a strict diet and isn’t one to experiment with different flavors. “Sadly, the Queen is not a foodie,” he said. “She eats to live, unlike Prince Philip who loves to eat and would stand and talk food all day.” He added, “No starch is the rule. No potatoes, rice or pasta for dinner. Just usually something like grilled sole with vegetables and salad.”

Queen Elizabeth is also said to hate garlic, a fact that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall recently revealed. During an appearance on MasterChef Australia, she said garlic is a “no-no”—especially at royal events and state banquets where there’s lots of chatting.

On Monday’s visit, Kate met with volunteers to discuss the benefits of the urban green space. She toured the allotment plots to see the impact that can be achieved in small gardens. The royal also took part in a winter planting workshop, bird box building, and pizza making in the garden’s kitchen area.

George and Charlotte would love to be learning outside the classroom,” Kate said of her two eldest children. “It’s still fun inside, but it’s much better outside,” to the agreement of the youngsters. She also admitted that her children would be jealous to find out that she spent the day making pizzas while they were in school. “He’s learning about space,” Kate said of 5-year-old George.

Kate Middleton made a pretty relatable mistake while buying her kids’ uniform

Every parent’s worst nightmare.

It’s true that the royal family lead lives that are often pretty different to ours. But that’s not to say they’re strangers to some aspects of ‘normal’ life, from being on Instagram to having a royal family WhatsApp group, and ordering in their favourite takeaway on a Friday night.

Mum-of-three Kate Middleton is also no stranger to regular parenting problems, whether that’s dealing with the odd tantrum in public or stopping Prince George from opening his Christmas presents before the big day. And while shopping for her children’s uniform recently, she made an error that all parents will understand.

A source told HELLO! that the Duchess of Cambridge took her children George and Charlotte to Peter Jones in Sloane Square, Chelsea, to buy new shoes before the start of the 2018-19 school year. The John Lewis & Partners branch is also the stockist for George’s uniform at St Thomas’s Battersea, where he is in Year One.

However, with her eldest two children wearing sandals in the warmer weather, Kate forgot to bring something pretty essential for the shoe-fitting – spare socks!

Fortunately George and Charlotte were able to borrow a pair from the store before trying on new shoes, but we can only imagine that moment of frustration when the duchess realised her mistake.

We’re pretty sure every parent can relate to forgetting something essential at least once or twice. You’re not alone, Kate.

Kate Middleton appeared on The One Show this week to talk to young people about staying safe online.

The Duchess of Cambridge made an appearance alongside her husband, Prince William, to talk about their cyber bullying campaign as part of Anti-Bullying week. They hope to encourage children to spot signs of online bullying with the help of the Kids Online Wellbeing app, which aims to educate young people about how to stay safe on social media.

The couple spoke to hosts Matt Baker and Alex Jones about the work they are doing.

Prince William said: ‘You are creating a practical, powerful tool to help children use their smartphones and social media with confidence and with safety. I am so proud that this has sprung out of the Cyberbullying Taskforce work.

‘It’s now important that our technology partners get right behind the app to make sure all children can benefit. We’re counting on all of you.’

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a stunning turquoise dress by one of her favourite designers – Emilia Wickstead – and teamed it with a pair of black heels.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed that it isn’t the first time that we’ve seen Kate in the dress. She is known for recycling her outfits, and she first wore it back in 2014 when she touched down in New Zealand as part of a royal tour.

The couple opened up about why they decided to get involved with the anti-cyber bullying initiative, with William revealing: ‘I saw that my friends and peers were seriously worried about the risks of the very powerful tools we were putting in our children’s hands.

‘For too many families, phones and social media shattered the sanctity and protection of the home.

Talking about his work with mental health charities, he added: ‘I met families who had suffered the ultimate loss.

‘For too many, social media and messaging was supercharging the age-old problem of bullying, leaving some children to take their own lives when they felt it was unescapable.’

Kate Middleton and Prince William threw a secret event in Kensington Palace

And everyone’s getting FOMO.

With soon-to-be parents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their royal tour in Australia and Pippa Middleton welcoming a baby just this week, the attention has been off Kate Middleton and Prince William.

In fact, we’ve hardly seen the Duchess of Cambridge this year, with Kate taking a maternity leave after the birth of Prince Louis, returning to royal duties just this month.

But given the attention on other members of the royal family, Kate and William managed to throw a secret party in Kensington Palace this week, with the public and press only finding out after the occasion.

The event in question was work-related – a surprise reception for the finalists of this year’s BBC Radio One’s Teen Hero Awards at their Kensington Palace home.

The couple reportedly welcomed teenage finalists to the reception, talking to them about their work as Teen Heroes of 2018.

‘It was such an honour and privilege to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Kensington Palace,’ one of the winners, Siena Castellon, explained to HELLO!. ‘They were both genuinely interested in my website, www.QLMentoring.com, which I created to support and mentor autistic students and students with learning disabilities.’

She continued: ’The Duchess was especially interested in addressing autism stereotypes and was saddened to hear about the severity of the disability-related bullying I have experienced. She congratulated me for being a Diana Award holder and for currently serving on the National Youth Board, a role that has given me a national platform through which to share my disability-based bullying experience. They were both incredibly warm, supportive and encouraging. Meeting them was an awesome experience! They have inspired me continue to make a positive difference in my community.’

The BBC Radio One Teen Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, hosted by Greg James.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Are ‘Delighted’ About Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Baby News

Kensington Palace is about to get one more royal resident!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting their first child this spring, and the royal family is sharing in their baby joy.

Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement: “My warmest congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the happy news they are expecting a baby in the Spring. Wishing them all the best.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who married the couple in St. George’s Chapel in May, also expressed his joy.

“Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their happy news! Prayers for them in the months ahead,” he said.

Kate Middleton Is Royal Wedding Guest Chic (Again!) for Princess Eugenie’s Big Day

Once again, Kate Middleton is the epitome of wedding guest chic.

The royal mom arrived at the royal wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank on Friday, shortly after returning to royal duty after taking some time out of the public eye following the birth of her third child, Prince Louis, in April.

Kate wore a burgundy ensemble by her own wedding dress designer, Alexander McQueen, and a matching velvet beret by go-to milliner Philip Treacy.

She and Prince William quickly headed inside after being driven to the chapel door, taking their seats next to newlyweds Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. (The couple, who wed in 2011 and whose children George, 5, and Charlotte, 3, even snuck in some hand holding before the ceremony began!)

Kate, 36, returned to her royal duties following maternity leave on Oct. 2 when she visited the Sayers Croft Forest School and Wildlife Garden. She took a short two-mile drive from her home at Kensington Palace to a recreation ground in Paddington, London, to spend time with local school children and learn how getting their hands dirty in a wildlife garden and outdoor learning helps with their well-being.

The 36-year-old royal is set to take part in sporadic engagements during October and through to the end of the year. She will return to her usual busy schedule come January.

Despite her time off from work, Kate has had a busy wedding season. In addition to helping marshal Prince George, 5, and Princess Charlotte, 3, who served in the bridal party at the wedding of her longtime friend, Sophie Carter, last month, she was her usual stylish self to celebrate the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle less than a month after Louis’ arrival.

Despite her royal status, Princess Kate has developed a clever trick to avoid upstaging the bride on her big day: Pulling a royal rewear!

For Sophie’s September nuptials, Kate wore a cornflower blue Catherine Walker & Co coat dress, which she previously wore when she arrived in Berlin with Prince William and their two eldest children during their July 2017 tour of Poland and Germany.

At the May wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, she appeared to pull an epic royal rewear with an off-white structured-collared coat dress. In July 2015, Kate wore a very similar piece to Princess Charlotte’s christening. She pulled out the ensemble again at the Queen’s official birthday celebrations, Trooping the Colour, in 2016.

Why Kate Middleton won’t accept gifts during royal visits

It’s pretty important

Words by Jadie Troy-Pryde

We’re pretty clued up when it comes to all things royal. From what goes on behind the scenes Buckingham Palace, to following protocol, we’d say we’re in the know when it comes to their very interesting secrets.

For example, did you know that the Queen has banned this ingredient from the royal kitchens? Or why Meghan Markle often wears black for official duties?

And then there’s the real reason that Prince William and Kate Middleton don’t hold hands in public, but Meghan and Prince Harry do.

But just when you thought you knew all there was to know, we’ve got another nugget of royal wisdom for you.

Kate Middleton won’t accept gifts from members of the public during royal visits.

Why?

REX

The Duchess of Cambridge recently returned to work five months after giving birth to her third child, Prince Louis. Earlier this week, she attended Sayers Croft Forest School and Wildlife Garden in Maida Vale, London, where she met local school children – and had the sweetest answer when one asked by one child why the photographers were taking snaps of her.

However, royal protocol states that when it comes to receiving presents things can get pretty complicated.

The Royal Family website reads: “Gifts offered by private individuals living in the UK not personally known to the Member of the Royal Family should be refused where there are concerns about the propriety or motives of the donor or the gift itself.”

Reportedly, the royals are only allowed to keep hold of gifts sent by the public if their value is less than £150, and items like flowers and certain foods are permitted.

According to the BBC, all gifts must be used by the Royal Family, used for displays, or given to charity or members of staff.

Just imagine the number of teddy bears they must have collected over the years…
