‘Monday Night Football’: How to Watch the Seahawks vs. Bears Game Online for Free Tonight

Week 2 of the 2018 NFL season features the Seattle Seahawks vs. the Chicago Bears on “Monday Night Football.”

Like all “Monday Night Football” matchups, the Seahawks-Bears game is being broadcast on TV by ESPN. But it is possible to watch tonight even if you don’t have cable TV. The 2018 season brought with it new options for live streaming NFL games for free on smartphones. Streaming TV services such as Hulu Live and Sling TV have packages that include ESPN as well.

Here are all the game details and all the options to watch “Monday Night Football” for free.

What Time Does “Monday Night Football” Start?

Kickoff for the “Monday Night Football” Seahawks-Bears game is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET, on ESPN. The Chicago Bears and the Seattle Seahawks both lost their first games of the season, and both will be looking to snag their first victories of 2018.

The game is being played at Soldier Field in Chicago, and the Bears are 3.5-point favorites to win. Among the other Seahawks-Bears betting odds, the over-under is set at about 43 points by most sports books.

How to Live Stream the Seahawks-Bears Game for Free

The 2018 season marks the first time that football fans can live stream NFL games for free on their phones, without any special subscription package, via the Yahoo Sports app or the NFL App

You can’t live stream every NFL game, however. Once you have the newest version of one of the apps downloaded, you can watch NFL games aired by on your local broadcast networks, as well as nationally broadcast games, including NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” and Fox and the NFL Network’s “Thursday Night Football.” These app live streams are available to watch on smartphones, and cannot be viewed on TV.

As we’ve reported before, some fans have complained that the new apps’ live streaming capabilities have been glitchy thus far in the season. Also, because you’re generally restricted to watching on a tiny smartphone screen, watching the game online via the Yahoo Sports or NFL App is hardly the optimal viewing experience.

If you don’t have cable and find it too frustrated to stream “Monday Night Football” on a phone, consider subscribing to a streaming TV service (explained below).

How to Watch “Monday Night Football” Online on TV — for Free

The streaming TV services Hulu Live, DirecTV Now, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, and YouTube TV all have packages that include ESPN. They also all offer free trial periods of five to seven days for new subscribers. So it’s possible to use them to watch “Monday Night Football” tonight for free on any device of your choosing — including a connected TV.

Just be sure to cancel the service before the free trial period expires, assuming you do not want to become a paid subscriber. If you don’t cancel in time, you’ll be charged the full monthly rate — which starts at around $ 25 to $ 45 depending on the provider and package you choose.

Note that not all streaming TV services come with ESPN. For example, the sports-focused streaming service Fubo TV comes with access to many NFL broadcasts including local Sunday games on Fox and CBS, as well as “Sunday Night Football” and “Thursday Night Football,” but its packages do not come with ESPN. In other words, you can’t use Fubo TV to watch “Monday Night Football.”

How to Live Stream ‘Monday Night Football’ Games for Free Throughout the 2018 NFL Season

“Monday Night Football” games are broadcast on ESPN. That’s a pay TV channel, of course. But it’s still possible for nearly all fans to watch “Monday Night Football” for free tonight and every Monday during the 2018 NFL season, even they don’t have cable or another TV or live streaming service that includes ESPN.

As we reported in a previous story covering how to live stream NFL games free, the 2018 season marks the first time that fans can stream their locally broadcast games, as well as nationally televised matchups — including “Sunday Night Football” on NBC and “Monday Night Football” on ESPN — by using the NFL App:

Fans can watch NFL games online for free via the NFL App. After you’ve downloaded the app to a mobile device or connected TV, you’ll be able to live stream many NFL games — specifically, your local team’s games, as well as nationally broadcast prime time games like NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” — throughout the entire season. Downloading the NFL App is free, and there is no charge for using it to stream games. You can even use it for free live streaming of the 2018 season’s “Monday Night Football” games, which are broadcast by the pay TV channel ESPN.

This season, you can also live stream the same selection of NFL games on mobile devices with the Yahoo Sports app.

So all you have to do to live stream “Monday Night Football” for free is download either the NFL App or the Yahoo Sports app and tune in from your preferred device.

Tonight, during the 2018 season’s first “Monday Night Football” broadcast, there are two games: The New York Jets vs. Detroit Lions, followed by Los Angeles Rams vs. Oakland Raiders.

What Time Does “Monday Night Football” Start?

For the 2018 NFL season’s first “Monday Night Football” game — Jets vs. Lions — kickoff time is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET at Ford Field in Detroit.

Tonight’s “Monday Night Football” features a rare double header. For the second game — Rams vs. Raiders — kickoff is scheduled for 10:20 p.m. ET at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, Calif.

Again, to watch “Monday Night Football” online for free, you can use either the NFL App or Yahoo sports app as explained above.

How to Live Stream ESPN for Free

If you’d like to watch ESPN online for free in general for a few days, many live streaming TV services include the sports-focus pay channel in their packages. They all have free trial periods of about a week available to new subscribers.

You can watch “Monday Night Football” online for free — and all ESPN content, for that matter — with streaming TV services such Fubo TV, Hulu Live, DirecTV Now, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, and YouTube TV.

The monthly rate for a basic package that includes ESPN with these services ranges from roughly $ 25 to $ 40. You’ll be charged if you don’t cancel the service by the time the free trial period ends. So remember to cancel if you don’t want to become a paying subscriber.

ESPN Says It Won’t Air National Anthem Before Monday Night Football Games

Avoiding potential controversy over showing players kneeling in protest of racial inequality, ESPN won’t broadcast the national anthem before any Monday Night Football games this year.

“We generally have not broadcasted the anthem and I don’t think that will change this year,” ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro said Friday, according to news site Axios. “Our plan going into this year is to not broadcast the anthem.”

The national anthem had long been a staple of sports games until two years ago, when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling to protest racial inequality and police brutality. Then-presidential candidate Donald Trump capitalized on the ensuing firestorm and has railed against the protests ever since.

The furor has put broadcasters a difficult spot. If they broadcast protests during the anthem, they risk adding to the controversy. If they don’t show the anthem, they face criticism from people who support the kneeling players.

In October, Fox Sports said it would no longer air coverage of the national anthem before NFL games after members of the New Orleans Saints team kneeled before the music began. In January, NBC decided to air the anthem and any protests that accompanied it, although no players kneeled when the anthem was played.

ESPN broadcast the anthem during certain games last year, when it was played alongside events the network deemed newsworthy, such as moments of silence to honor tragedies. Pitaro said that ESPN does not see itself as a political organization.

“It’s not our job to cover politics, purely, but we’ll cover the intersection of sports and politics,” Pitaro said. “When something happens, when the Eagles are disinvited from White House, or when someone takes a knee, if we think newsworthy we’re going to cover it.”

Everyone Gets Free Soft Pretzels This Monday at Philly Pretzel Factory

Every year, I look forward to National Pretzel Day just as much as Stanley looks forward to Pretzel Day on “The Office.” Maybe it’s because my family’s weekend tradition was going to the mall just for something to do, and stopping for soft pretzels was always part of the plan.

And freshly made soft pretzels are even better when they’re free. This Monday, we can all enjoy a free soft pretzel at Philly Pretzel Factory.

How to Get a Free Pretzel at Philly Pretzel Factory This Monday

Philly Pretzel Factory co-founder Dan DiZio started selling pretzels at a busy intersection in Philadelphia at age 11 — and after graduating college, he and his college roommate turned his childhood side gig into a booming business.

Now, Philly Pretzel Factory is celebrating 20 years of serving up “hot outta the oven” soft pretzels with free pretzels for everyone on Monday, Aug. 20. And there is no purchase necessary — your fresh, buttery soft pretzel will be totally free.

Plus, you’ll have a chance to win free pretzels for a year! Just be sure to fill out a ballot card when you stop in for your free pretzel.

And don’t worry: You don’t have to take a trip to Philly to get in on this deal. Although the original Philly Pretzel Factory was started in Philadelphia, there are now more than 100 locations across 12 states.

Jessica Gray is an editorial assistant at The Penny Hoarder. She once celebrated quitting a horrible job by stopping by the mall for a soft pretzel before heading home to watch “Office Space.”

This was originally published on The Penny Hoarder, which helps millions of readers worldwide earn and save money by sharing unique job opportunities, personal stories, freebies and more. The Inc. 5000 ranked The Penny Hoarder as the fastest-growing private media company in the U.S. in 2017.

Term Sheet — Monday, August 13

SOLVING THE TESLA PUZZLE

Good morning, Term Sheet readers.

BREAKING: Right as I was about to press “send” on this newsletter, I saw this: Elon Musk published an update on taking Tesla private.

In a Q&A style blog post, Musk answers questions such as “Why did I make a public announcement” and “why did I say ‘funding secured.’ In regards to the latter, he explains that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) had approached him “multiple times about taking Tesla private” since the beginning of 2017. The two groups reportedly held several meetings over the next year to try to move forward with a going private transaction.

Musk adds, “Obviously, the Saudi sovereign fund has more than enough capital needed to execute on such a transaction.”

After the Saudi fund bought almost 5% of Tesla stock through the public markets, they reportedly reached out about another meeting. That meeting took place on July 31st, Musk writes.

After meeting with the managing director of the fund, Musk was led to believe that “no other decision makers were needed and that they were eager to proceed.”

“I left the July 31st meeting with no question that a deal with the Saudi sovereign fund could be closed, and that it was just a matter of getting the process moving,” he said. “This is why I referred to ‘funding secured’ in the August 7th announcement.

So this begs the question: Was funding actually secured?…Or did Musk just come away from the meeting with the belief/hope/idea that the PIF would invest without funding actually being secured? Not sure how the SEC will feel about all that.

Musk explains that the PIF’s managing director “has expressed support for proceeding subject to financial and other due diligence.” The director has also reportedly asked for additional details on how the company would be taken private, including any required percentages and any regulatory requirements.

And then it gets even murkier. Musk says he’s also having discussions with a number of other investors….Like someone aptly said on Twitter, “It’s not not the Saudis, basically.”

Musk also said he’s been reaching out to Tesla’s largest shareholders and that most of the capital required to take the company private will be funded by equity, rather than debt.

“The $ 420 buyout price would only be used for Tesla shareholders who do not remain with our company if it is private,” he wrote in the blog post. “My best estimate right now is that approximately two-thirds of shares owned by all current investors would roll over into a private Tesla.”

Over the last few weeks, several Term Sheet readers have e-mailed me with thoughts on what’s going on. I got everything from “Impossible to have lined up the financing to take this dog private!” to “End of the day, Musk is once again letting his ego and mouth take over and at some point it will cost him dearly — it is just a matter of time.”

But after all, it’s Elon Musk, we’re talking about. And with Elon Musk, it feels like everything is on the table at all times.

Monday Sales Tripod – Allen Edmonds 1st Quality for $249, J. Crew Factory Mega Clearance, & More

The Thursday Handfuls are great, but what if Monday (or Tuesday) rolls around and there are a few sales that can’t wait til the weekend? You’ll find three of the best, with a few picks from each, to start the week below.

#1. Allen Edmonds: $ 176 off Select Bourbon & Merlot

Huge fan of the Allen Edmonds Merlot shade around these parts (see a full How to Wear it for their Merlot McAllisters here.) Also know that the Bourbon shade can be a bit divisive. Some people LOVE it. Some think it can look a little striped looking and/or greenish in some lights. Anyway, $ 249 is a hell of a price for timeless Allen Edmonds first quality shoes. Deal runs clear through July 22nd.

#2. J.C.F.: 60% off Select + Extra 50% off Clearance w/ TOOCOOL

Got that? Two different offers here. The flex-chino blazer steal alert from Sunday is part of the clearance deal. But don’t forget the 60% off stuff too. Lots to look at here.

#3. Ledbury: 30% – 50% off Select Items Summer Sale

Is it still spendy? Yes. But it’s Ledbury. Really, really nice fabrics. Terrific construction. Great collars on their shirts. And speaking of their shirts, all of their shirts come with that slightly lowered 2nd button. Perfect for going sans-tie, and if any time is sans-tie-time, it’s summertime.

BONUS  Massdrop: Last Day for Spier & Mackay Suits – $ 299 FINAL

These are NOT their basic Aussie wools (which are great in their own right.) These are Italian milled, Super 120s wool fabrics. Still lined with Bemberg. Still half-canvas. Still offered in either slim or contemporary fits. Available in either navy, medium gray, or charcoal. Drop ends today though.

Don Cheadle, Regina Hall Comedy ‘Black Monday’ Headed To Showtime

Showtime has given a series order to the comedy “Black Monday,” which stars Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells, and Regina Hall, reports Variety.

The show, which was ordered to pilot under the name “Ball Street,” goes back to October 19, 1987 – aka Black Monday, the worst stock market crash in the history of Wall Street.

The film tells the story of how a group of outsiders took on the blue-blood, old-boys club of Wall Street and ended up crashing the world’s largest financial system, a Lamborghini limousine, Don Henley’s birthday party, and the glass ceiling.

Showtime has ordered a 10-episode first season and is slated for a 2019 debut.

Cheadle, also an executive producer on the series, returns to Showtime after he starred for five seasons on the premium cabler’s series “House of Lies.”

The cast also includes Paul Scheer, Yassir Lester, Michael James Scott, and Eugene Cordero. Casey Wilson will appear in a recurring guest star role with Ken Marino and Kurt Braunohler guest starring.

“’Black Monday’ is a scathing comic commentary on the excess of the ’80s,” said Showtime president and CEO David Nevins. “Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells and Regina Hall lead a hilarious cast that takes on blue-blooded Wall Street as the Bad News Bears of Wall Street trading firms.”

The series was created by David Caspe and Jordan Cahan, who will serve as executive producers and showrunners. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who will also executive produce, directed the pilot. “Black Monday” is a co-production between Showtime and Sony Pictures Television Studios.

Monday Meals – Benefits of Bitter Greens!

“Take the bitter with the sweet…” It’s more than just an old proverb, good advice to remind you that life is full of ups and downs. It’s also a directive from Mother Nature – and it’s speaking to your digestion!

From our earliest days as hunters and gatherers we knew the importance of including bitters into our dietary regimen. The first days of spring brought forth a bounty from the earth in terms of bitter flavors and we harvested them, eating them raw to gain their full health benefits.

From our earliest days as hunters and gatherers we knew the importance of including bitters into our dietary regimen. The first days of spring brought forth a bounty from the earth in terms of bitter flavors and we harvested them, eating them raw to gain their full health benefits. These days we find our bitter greens in radicchio, arugula, watercress and dandelion. Whether in a salad, a smoothiejuiced or souped – these greens pack a powerhouse of health benefits into a tiny, tasty package.

The Need for Bitter

We all know we’re supposed to eat our greens, and the darker the better. They are full of vitamins and fiber and we know those are important. But bitter greens like those mentioned above – as well as kale, fenugreek and chicory and so many others – have added bonuses for your digestion.

In our early days, winter was a time of heavy foods. Dried, salted meat and starchy vegetables that could last throughout the cold season bogged down our digestive tracts. Yes, they kept us alive and functioning, but come the springtime our systems were crying out for a cleanse. And Mother Nature came to the rescue. Tiny new shoots of bitter greens popped up and we instinctively knew to eat them for all the following reasons.

Improved nutrient absorption  Eating bitter things stimulates the production of gastric acid in the stomach. Taste receptors for bitter on the tongue signal to the liver and the gallbladder that digestion is imminent. These organs begin to work on bile and enzyme production which are necessary for successful digestion. The better you digest the foods you eat, the more nutrients your body is able to absorb and use from those foods.

Helps control that sweet tooth It’s no secret that Americans love our sugar. It’s in everything from breads to sauces, drinks to cereals. Nutritionists warn us about not only the health detriments to eating excessive sugar, but also its addictive qualities. Traditional Chinese Medicine entreats us to stay ‘in balance’ in all things. Increasing our consumption of bitter things can naturally bring our sugar consumption into alignment as a byproduct of improved digestion. When we are optimally digesting our foods we reduce cravings.

Detoxify, fight free radicals & lessen infection Bitter foods are generally pretty nutrient dense. As mentioned earlier, the fiber that is prolific in greens and other bitter vegetables keeps things moving through our systems. A constantly moving system flushes out things that don’t belong more efficiently. Bitter greens are also a great source of vitamins like vitamin K – which is blood strengthening – vitamin C – great for immunity – and beta carotene – an antioxidant that contributes to improved immune function.

Get Your Green On

Lucky you! You live in the age of Pinterest. Do a simple search for bitter greens recipes and you’ll come up with a plethora of palatable options. Additionally, it’s easier than ever to grow your own greens and these crops are generally quick growers and early producers.

Monday Meals: Veggie Quinoa Soup

It’s winter, it’s cold, it’s gray, it’s time to make a pot of soup. This comforting routine doesn’t have to break your healthy living resolutions. Soup is a great opportunity to double up on the veggies, and sneak in extra nutrition in the form of purees, healthy grains and nurishing broth. (My kids have no idea that their favorite chili is full of vitamin-rich pureed sweet potato and red pepper.)

Quinoa is likely already on your healthy foods radar. It is widely hailed as a “superfood.” Quinoa’s full complement of essential amino acids means that it is a complete protein, similar to meat. It is gluten-free, full of fiber and boasts healthy fats, vitamins and antioxidants.

Quinoa is easy to add to soups. Simply stir it into the broth and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Or do what I do, make a big batch of quinoa early in the week, keep it in the refrigerator and add it to just about anything that needs a tasty nutritional boost.

Let this recipe from Cooking Light inspire you to experiment with quinoa and veggies. Follow the recipe or use it as a great opportunity to clear out the produce drawer of your refrigerator or use up leftover cooked veggies.

Eggs are your ally when you need a quick satisfying meal. This recipe for Spinach and Mushroom Frittata from New York Times Cooking  pairs the ubiquitous refrigerator resident with bagged spinach and pre-sliced mushrooms, offering a nutritious and convenient meal in no time.

Eggs provide protein, as well as Vitamin D and choline. Spinach is a powerhouse, loaded with beta-carotene, fiber, potassium, iron, magnesium and folate.

Mushrooms that are grown in natural light or UV light are a unique plant source of vitamin D. Most of us are running low on this important sunlight-derived  nutrient, especially in the winter months.

Monday Meals: Mediterranean Chickpea Quinoa Bowl

The Mediterranean diet is consistently judged to be the healthiest way to eat, for heart health, reducing inflammation and weight loss or maintenance. This way of eating includes plenty of vegetables and fruits, olive oil, fish, whole grains, beans and legumes, seeds and nuts, limited amounts of red meat and the occasional glass of wine. Rather than eliminating significant food groups or relying on a fad ingredient, the Mediterranean diet is a way of life and a well-rounded approach to feeding yourself.

Grain bowls are a great addition to your meal repertoire and a handy way to clean out your refrigerator. They consist of base of healthy whole grains like quinoa, farro, freekeh, brown rice, wheat berries, or grits topped with veggies, greens, a bit of protein (soft poached egg is a fine choice) and a sauce or dressing. Finish it off with some seed, nuts or crunchy pickled veggies, maybe a sprinkle of herbs or cheese.

This recipe for Mediterranean Chickpea Quinoa Bowl from Eating Well is a great place to start your grain bowl exploration. It is gluten free and vegetarian, while high in fiber and flavor. Kalamata olives, roasted red peppers, garlic and feta cheese provide savory balance for the base of mild, nutty quinoa.

Monday Motivation: How To Keep Going, From A 102-Year-Old Runner

Ida Keeling’s life story is rife with motivation. The 102-year-old began working at age 12 to help provide for her immigrant family, lived through the Great Depression and the civil rights movement, raised four children as a single mother, and then set world records as a runner—in her 90s.

motivation from Ida Keeling (Photo courtesy of Zondervan)

Keeling is sharing that inspiring story in her memoir, Can’t Nothing Bring Me Down: Chasing Myself in the Race Against Time, which will be released next February and is available for pre-order this month.

“I was feeling so blue,” Keeling writes of the period after her two sons were murdered, less than three years apart.

“My psyche had slowed down and it felt like I was moving around in a bowl of thick oatmeal. Not a pleasant feeling, but me and the icky sensation were becoming well acquainted. Too well.”

Keeling credits her daughter Cheryl, herself a runner, with saving her life by pleading with her to run for the first time at the age of 67. Running is “an answer to grief, stress, obesity, bad health, and bad habits,” Cheryl writes. “It is a survival tool.”

More than 30 years later, Keeling is sharing some motivation from her journey:

Stick it out, even when it hurts

“It was my first race. I took off and all these people was rushin’ past. It felt like somebody pulled a sheet off me; it was horrible,” Keeling writes, “but I said I can’t slow down now. I got to keep going.”

“I started thinking this is too much, then all of a sudden, I started picking up a little speed and I thought, gee maybe this is good for me.”

The way you talk to yourself matters

“The gun sounded, and I was off, putting to shame younger couch potatoes, excuse givers, or plain old slackers who might’ve been well accustomed to convincing themselves that they were too over the hill to compete,” Keeling writes.

“That’s the thing about feeding yourself negative information. It always slows you down.”

Surround yourself with the right people

“I absolutely refuse to tolerate drama,” Keeling writes, adding “I just don’t have time for people who live only to cause trouble.”

“Just find the nice, kind, supportive people and bring them into your circle. Let the others find God in their own way and in their own time.”

Monday Meals: Mushroom-Spinach Soup With Cinnamon, Coriander and Cumin

Autumn is soup time. Warm, hearty and nourishing, soups are the perfect antidote to the cooler days. And they make the kitchen smell great! This recipe for Mushroom-Spinach Soup With Cinnamon, Coriander and Cumin from New York Times Cooking is robust and satisfying, while still simple enough for a weeknight meal. It is also gluten-free and vegetarian. Mushrooms and spinach are both good sources of fiber, supporting gut health and weight loss. Spinach is a great source of iron (critical for blood function), vitamin A (important for your eyes), vitamin K (for healthy bones) and magnesium (needed all over your body, especially for muscle, bone and heart health.) Warm spices give the pot depth and complexity. Cinnamon has a host of its own health benefits and this is the perfect time of year to bring it back into your kitchen rotation. Check out our article: Spice Up Your Health – With Cinnamon!

Recipe courtesy of the New York Times.

INGREDIENTS

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter or extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 ¼ pounds mixed mushrooms (such as cremini, oyster, chanterelles and shiitake), chopped
  • ½ pound shallots, finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thymeleaves
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch ground allspice
  • 2 ½ teaspoons kosher salt, more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 5 ounces baby spinach
  • Fresh lime juice, to taste
  • Plain yogurt, for serving (optional)

PREPARATION

  1. Heat 3 tablespoons butter or oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add half the mushrooms and half the shallots; cook, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated and the mushrooms are well browned, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer mushrooms to a bowl and repeat with remaining butter, mushrooms and shallots.
  2. Return all mushrooms to the pot and stir in tomato paste, thyme, cumin, coriander, cinnamon and allspice; cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  3. Stir in 5 cups water, the salt and the black pepper. Bring mixture to a simmer over medium heat and cook gently for 20 minutes. Stir in baby spinach and let cook until just wilted, 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Using an immersion blender or food processor, coarsely purée soup. Mix in lime juice. Thin with water, as needed. Taste and adjust seasoning, if necessary. Serve with dollops of yogurt if you’d like.

Jordin Sparks Makes Her Own Statement While Singing the National Anthem Before Monday Night’s NFL Game

Jordin Sparks didn’t kneel, but that didn’t stop her from sending her own message on Monday night.

The “It Ain’t You” singer, 27, had Bible verses references written on her hands while singing the National Anthem before the Dallas Cowboys took on the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale, Arizona.

While holding a microphone, the verse ‘Prov. 31: 8-9’ were visible, a reference to the Book of Proverbs, which reads, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Many on social media took the star’s Bible quotes to be taking aim at President Donald Trump for not doing more to support people of color and those struggling in America.

Sparks’ father is nine-year NFL veteran Phillippi Sparks. The singer wasn’t the only star to stand up to the president.

During Monday’s football game in Glendale, the Dallas Cowboys dropped to one knee before standing and locking arms to sing the National Anthem. The Arizona Cardinals did the same.

The team’s owner, Jerry Jones, joined his players in solidarity. Jones had previously donated $ 1 million to Trump’s inauguration committee.

The owner spoke out against the man he back in a postgame news conference.

“Our players wanted to make a statement about unity and we wanted to make a statement about equality,” Jones told reporters. “They were very much aware that statement, when made or when attempted to be made in and a part of the recognition of our flag, can not only lead to criticism but also controversy.

“It was real easy for everybody in our organization to see that the message of unity, the message of equality was getting, if you will, pushed aside or diminished by the controversy. We even had the circumstances that it was being made into a controversy.”

Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams questioned the necessity of having the National Anthem in sports during an interview on MSNBC.

“It’s also important to realize this anthem thing is a scan,” he said. “This is not actually part of football. This was invented in 2009 from the government paying the NFL to market military recruitment to get more people to go off and fight wars to die.”

Pharrell Williams got down on two knees as he performed at a charity concert in Charlottesville, supporting a gesture by NFL players who have started kneeling during the national anthem to draw attention to racial injustice.

Monday Meals: Big Avocado Toast Inspiration

Whether you are new to the avocado toast trend or the tasty stack is an old favorite, some fresh ideas for topping your toast are always welcome.

Avacados are unique fruits. Their creamy texture is a result of a very high fat content.  That fat however, is the heart-healthy monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid called oleic acid. This is the same fat found in olive oil and thought to be the source of its blood pressure reducing benefits. Avocados are also high in fiber, much of it the gut-friendly insoluble variety. To round it out, they pack a good dose of vitamins K, C, B5, B6, E, Folate and Potassium.

The folks at Kitchn have compiled a tempting and nutritious spread to get your imagination humming. Get the recipes here.

Monday Meals: Make-Ahead Oatmeal, a Healthy Morning Treat

Oatmeal has a mixed reputation. A 2008 survey found that Americans consider it the 4th most healthful food, coming in after whole grains, broccoli and bananas. But even with this wholesome reputation, it can be hard to find true oatmeal enthusiasts. Oatmeal is a modest food. While kale enjoys its moment in the spotlight or quinoa rakes in the accolades, oatmeal simply waits in the pantry, loyal and reliable. It is time to give humble oatmeal the respect it deserves.

Oatmeal is a modest food. While kale enjoys its moment in the spotlight or quinoa rakes in the accolades, oatmeal simply waits in the pantry, loyal and reliable. It is time to give humble oatmeal the respect it deserves.

Oatmeal’s reputation as a healthy food is more than old-fashioned nostalgia. The gluten-free, whole grain cereal is shown to lower cholesterol. Its beta-glucan fiber is credited with reducing both LDL and total cholesterol levels. That same fiber helps you to feel satisfied longer and may cause you to consume less calories overall. A high fiber diet is associated with better colon health and reduced colon cancer. A clean colon is a happy colon and fiber acts as an effective scrub brush, keeping wastes moving and reducing constipation. There is research suggesting that oatmeal can help lower blood sugar. It is a low glycemic index food and won’t cause blood sugar to spike and crash.

If you have been neglecting oatmeal as a breakfast option because of a harried morning schedule, consider the option of make-ahead single servings that can be made the night (or days) before and eaten on the go. Sure, you can always make a big batch of classic oatmeal and heat it up in the morning, but Wholefully has a tempting collection of make-ahead cold oatmeal breakfast recipes that will have you rethinking what that loyal grain can do. Add-ins from carrots to cocoa create eye-opening morning flavor combos, while powerhouse nutritional sidekicks like chia seeds and ground flax mean that these tempting concoctions still get you off on the right foot for the day.

Fatalities Reported After ‘Serious Incident’ at U.K. Arena Where Ariana Grande Performed Monday

Police said a “serious incident” and “a number” of fatalities were reported at Manchester Arena in the U.K. on Monday night, where Ariana Grande performed a concert, PEOPLE confirms.

“Emergency services responding to serious incident at Manchester Arena. Avoid the area,” police tweeted about 11:30 p.m. local time. “More details will follow as soon as available.”

In a statement, police said there were “a number of confirmed fatalities and others injured.”

Local authorities could not immediately be reached for further comment and the exact timing of the incident was unclear, whether it occurred during or after the official performance.

“Ariana is okay,” a rep for Grande said in a statement to PEOPLE. “We are further investigating what happened.”

The nature of the incident and the exact number of casualties were not immediately clear, though reports swirled on social media about some kind of large and very loud noise at or near the arena during the concert.

Manchester police said an explosion had been reported.

Witnesses described it as a “huge bang,” according to the BBC.

One video shared on Twitter appeared to show the venue in the aftermath of the incident, with people screaming and streaming to the exits.

Why You Need to Fire Your Inner Monday Morning Quarterback

2017-02-06-1486419171-9252521-shutterstock_148161395.jpg

It’s no surprise that all of the Monday morning quarterbacks have shown up in full splendor today, following the biggest comeback in Super bowl history. Full disclosure: I’m a lifelong New Englander, but promise not to say something like “Hellooooo, haters”, or “we’re wicked awesome” in a thick PAAHHK the CAAAH Boston accent between sips of Dunkin’ Donuts.

In case you didn’t know, a Monday morning quarterback (MMQB) is a person who criticizes, passes judgment, and offers hindsight solutions to problems. They are very easy to find today across talk radio, TV, and social media feeds.

They should’ve done this or that. Why on earth didn’t they see it? They made such a textbook mistake. It’s all SOOO obvious. OMG.

Psychology can help explain why hindsight bias is such a trap for us. That feeling that “we knew it all along” arises from our tendencies towards creating stories that make sense based on the information we have. Researchers Neal Roese and Kathleen Vohs suggest that our desire for closure makes us apt to promote a positive view of ourselves. We get all puffed up, even when the conclusions we draw are incorrect.

Hindsight bias can prevent us from learning from experiences, or taking a deeper dive into the forces at hand, and coming up with a more accurate analysis of what’s transpired.

Most of us are not professional sports players, with millions of eyes on us, but we’ve all faced our own versions of MMQB’s, jousting us with “I told you so’s” and “what were you thinking’s”. Worse, many of us struggle with our own pesky inner MMQB that constantly needles us through the play by play of our lives.

I should’ve never done that. Why didn’t I realize it at the time? How stupid can I be?

While reflecting on mistakes is a vital part of our growth and progress, all the ‘shoulding’ that comes from our inner MMQB can sabotage happiness and wellbeing. Here’s how to fire a reactive, overly critical MMQB, and replace with a more rational, wise one:

1. Silence your inner hater. Do you tend to call yourself names, instead of cutting yourself some slack? Do you take a disproportionate amount of blame in a situation that’s gone wrong? Do you feel a constant sense of under accomplishment, no matter how much you’ve done? These are red flags that your inner MMQB needs walking papers.

2. Review the tape. Do you think every move you’ve made has gone wrong? Do you see your mistakes as catastrophic with no room for learning? Your MMQB might be going purely off the amygdala, the mechanism in your brain that regulates fear responses. Take a needed break to regroup and revisit once the frontal lobe, the part of the brain responsible for reason, has time to review the play more accurately.

3. Stay agile. Do you feel a sense of dread and doom? Does it seem like there’s no way out? Stay on your toes, and be ready to pivot away from original conclusions you have drawn. Train your inner MMQB to rethink first glances, and check for new alternatives and approaches to the problems you face. Be on the lookout for opportunities to change directions. So much falls out of the realm of our control, and while we can’t always win, we can learn to adapt and stay in the game for the long haul.

Hindsight might not be as 20/20 as we’d like. If your inner MMQB has become obnoxiously full of unsolicited, negative advice, now is the time to fire and rehire one that is more rational, compassionate and nimble.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping Tips

2014-11-26-checklisttitle.jpg

It’s the biggest shopping season of them all, but Santa isn’t the only one who should be checking his list twice. If you were planning on shopping for an amazing holiday outfit or thoughtful gifts for friends and family? This is a great time to do it. However, a successful weekend of shopping is all about planning. It can mean the difference between the satisfaction of getting all your holiday shopping done a month in advance and waking up on Tuesday with a shopping hangover or buyer’s remorse. Here are 10 things to consider as you move into the weekend.

  1. What is Black Friday?
It’s the day after Thanksgiving. This year, that’s November 28th. The day is marked by major sales and discounts. It’s called Black Friday because the day puts retailers “in the black” e.g. making a profit.
  2. What is Cyber Monday? Before the internet, we only had Black Friday. People would wake up extra early to go shopping for deals. There was coffee involved. That still happens but Cyber Monday started as a day of online deals for people who don’t want to brave the crowds or cold on Friday. However, most shops have Black Friday sales online now too, so it’s worth checking out online deals early Friday morning.
  3. Which one should I shop, Friday or Monday? Here’s my advice. Some discounts go live Friday and some items will sell out. If you have your heart set on something and it goes on crazy sale Friday? Buy! If you are shopping in general, are flexible, and want the deepest discounts? Wait until Monday!
  4. What is this Small Business Saturday I heard about? It’s a day to support local businesses. Is there a small shop in your town you love? They might have great after-Thanksgiving sales too. Check them out because small businesses keep communities thriving.
  5. What makes a good discount? Because I’m a fashion blogger, I’ve had a sneak peak at many of the best deals in fashion during this year’s shopping weekend. Many of the discounts I’ve seen are 30-50 percent off. I personally wouldn’t accept less than this range. Like many others, I will be posting my favorite deals on my blog at the stroke of midnight on Friday.
  6. I am against the commercialization of holidays and this post offends me. I totally understand, however it still stands that this is a great time for deals. If you were going to shop anyway, this is a way to stretch your dollar. I personally don’t like the idea of shopping on Thanksgiving and think it’s perfectly fine to avoid stores that make their workers miss the holiday. Thanksgiving should be spent with loved ones, not fighting with a stranger over a BluRay player. Friday, Saturday, and Monday are more than enough, and you can do much of it from your home in your pajamas.
  7. I’m definitely shopping, what can I do in the meantime? Plan ahead. Who are you shopping for? Yourself? Friends? Family? First, decide on an overall budget and stick to it. Remember, the weekend should be about shopping smart.
  8. What’s a good Black Friday or Cyber Monday shopping strategy? Pull up your favorite shops and compare the deals. The internet is always open so Black Friday starts at midnight. If you find something you absolutely love, buy or risk it selling out. If you’re just window shopping, keep looking so you make the best choices. Keep notes of all purchases and expected packages. Don’t make impulse purchases. If you’re shopping in-store, bundle up and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Be kind to others; you’re not going into battle. At the end of the day, it’s just shopping.
  9. Help, I’m scared to shop for clothes online! Know your measurements and use the size charts. If you are like me, you’ll be grabbing that extra serving of stuffing (my favorite) the evening before – and the morning after. So know your size before then so you can ensure a perfect fit.
