The Games We’re Looking Forward to in the Next Few Months

Every now and then we look forward, to the tune of a few months, and try to discern the best of the bunch. This will naturally be an extra special edition of this staple. Not only are we getting into the typical holiday madness, but this seems to be an extra busy year, full of quality.

OK, it kind of feels like we say that every year, but 2018 marks the return of two franchises that are far from annual appearances: Red Dead and Fallout. Those, on top of the already released Monster Hunter World, Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War, make this a stellar year already.

And that’s before we even take into account the reliable regulars we’ll see soon. Even familiar faces like FIFA can put up a surprisingly thoughtful entry, raising the quality of the year as a whole. We’re yet to see how Call of Duty and Battlefield will fare, but we’ll definitely be playing to find out.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The biggest no-brainer in a list populated mostly with no-brainers. Red Dead Redemption 2 is actually Rockstar’s first game on this generation of hardware. That’s how long it’s been, and fans are all kinds of keen.

We’ve played a couple of hours, and walked away with some thoughts about the tiny, conversation-worthy moments the game is full of, as well as seeing how the new horse system works, and why maintaining your guns is a lot more important this time around.

Fallout 76

It almost feels as if the franchise itself has been locked underground for ages, about to step into the light again. This is hallowed ground though, because Fallout 76 is going back to the very first vault that opened on Reclamation Day.

As for the new features, though? It’s not exactly classic Fallout. This newer game is an online experience, in which everyone you encounter is a real player. You’ll be able to turn this off, but the game is designed with cooperation and PvP in mind.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

After a hiatus of a few years, the Assassin’s Creed franchise was back with a bang last year in Origins. Now, Odyssey is a game that very much follows suit. It’ll use the same combat system that doesn’t choreograph the whole fight for you. If you miss, it’ll let you miss.

That said, we’ve been looking at the skills present in Odyssey, and they look a lot more inventive and outside-the-box. You have Ghost Arrows that can go through walls, and certain shots that do +800% Hunter Damage.

We’re not sure what we can do with all that yet, but we’re keen to find out what interesting assassinations we can pull off.

Darksiders III

Consider the size of Darksiders III, there are some very big shoes to fill here. The action franchise follows various horsepeople of the apocalypse, making it as if each game features a different RPG class. Now that we’ve seen the tanky War, and the roguey Death, it’s on to Fury — a chain-wielding warrior capable of Devil May Cry-esque air combos.

You can check out what it’s like to fight the first boss in the above video, or in our preview. Here’s hoping there’s a similar variety in the gameplay, such as the Shadow of the Colossus moments from the last game.

Soulcalibur 6

Also known as “The Geralt one,” this fighting game is bringing in the star of such games as The Witcher and The Witcher 2, and believe it or not, The Witcher 3. The White Wolf will face off against series regulars like Kilik and Mitsurugi on cramped platforms where falling off is absolutely possible. All done with an epic voiceover to remind you how epicly epic your fights are.

We’ve previously written about how we’re not the biggest fan of the Critical Edge system the game brings in, but it shouldn’t affect serious play too much. It’s moreso an unnecessary nod to newer players that oversimplifies the Soulcalibur system. It sure looks purdy, but it’s not a great fit.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the Soulcalibur 6 fighting system will be fantastic. We can’t wait to engage in footsies and distance management with Kilik’s staff. Not to mention this one comes out a few months ahead of Dead or Alive 6.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

You knew it was coming, and it finally happened. Battle royale has made its way into both Call of Duty and Battlefield. Call of Duty will always be Call of Duty, and it’s not known as the most innovative FPS game. But Black Ops 4 does take place in our favourite setting: Not World War II.

Early impressions of the new Blackout mode (see: battle royale) have been positive, and it features several older CoD maps stitched into one expanse of high-pitched VOIP and teenage teabaggers. The subseries has come a long way from asking Mason what the numbers mean, but there are always some highly polished campaigns to experience here, and we’ll be doing just that.

Battlefield V

As the perfect segue, Battlefield V won’t feature a traditional campaign — instead, it’s continuing its popular war stories mode, exploring the lesser known tales of World War II. This shooter will focus on areas like Norway or Northern Africa, as opposed to retreading the D-Day landing and conflicts over Paris.

We should re-emphasise how bored we are of World War II, if only to give our next point more weight. When playing Battlefield V, we were completely sold. Hate the setting, but loved the game. It was a lot of fun, and it didn’t take long to realise it.

Building fortifications was somewhat akin to Enemy Territory. You can only build them in pre-approved spots, but the maps are much more open than Enemy Territory‘s ever were. That makes us pretty excited about what routes and lines of sight you can gain or obstruct when trying to get the advantage. There’ll be a lot to learn about any given capture point.

Artifact Valve card game Richard Garriot
Card combat takes place across three separate lanes in Artifact.

Artifact

Valve’s card game based on DOTA 2 is slated for late November, which doesn’t necessarily mean Artifact will actually come out then, but probably. The highly anticipated collectible card game is being designed by the original creator of Magic: The Gathering, Richard Garfield — lending some impressive weight to a project that’ll be entering an already crowded and competitive space.

While Magic remains the least random of all the major CCGs out there, Garfield has defended randomness in videogames and will be incorporating some Random Number Generation (RNG). Much less than the norm established by Hearthstone, mind you. But there’s an inherent randomness after each round, when creeps will spawn in two of the three lanes.

Its three-lane system is an extension of Legends‘ two-lane system, and fits the idea of being based on a MOBA quite well. We’re expecting good things, and hope the RNG is kept to a minimum to keep it competition-worthy.

Phoenix Point

There are a lot of X-COM-likes coming up. We’ve already had Phantom Doctrine to enjoy, and Phoenix Point together with Mutant Year Zero will well and truly scratch that itch. Phoenix Point involves Julian Gallop, designer of the original X-COM, and we were fortunate to catch up with them to talk about the game’s direction.

Thanks to the wonders of crowdfunding, it’s already wildly successful. There’ll be a more involved and strategic metagame on the world map, and you’ll be able to target specific body parts, Fallout style.

This one was pretty hard when we played it earlier this year. Player after player would try and fail the demo mission at the Game Developer’s Conference. They may have tweaked that by now, and expect difficulty settings — but either way, it’s going to be an incredible timesink.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Another game offering top-down, turn-based tactics, Mutant Year Zero is based on a European board game. Former Hitman developers have joined the project to really nail the stealth portions, and the result is very interesting.

Mutant Year Zero seamlessly switches between real-time stealth and turn-based combat. As soon as you’re “discovered,” the game transitions to turns. Anything you can do beforehand to give yourself an advantage is fair game, but it’ll be a stealth challenge — and you won’t want to get caught out in the wrong spot.

This one also has an interesting way of dealing with RNG. Die rolls still affect whether or not you’ll hit your enemy, but modifiers have drastic effects. The extreme degree of this means you’ll likely see a lot of 0% and 100% indicators. If the shot is 40-60%, you know it must be seriously close. Anything you can do to help yourself first, like destroying the target’s cover, can bump you back up to that 100%.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Oh don’t you worry, we didn’t forget. The series that dominates every fighting game tournament, numbers-wise, is getting its Switch version. We’ve had a play of this one too, and had a lot of fun with the Splatoon character.

You can expect a steady trickle of character and stage announcements until December. After which, every videogame bar and event will have Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the projector, because hey, give the people what they want.

The Games We’re Most Excited About in the Next Two Months

It’s almost the business end of the year. Full of… business. Also games.

August provides the last relatively quiet window for a few indies to release before the proper madness starts, and we’re starting to see some of the bigger releases of the year as well. Namely, you’ve got Marvel’s Spider-Man and Shadow of the Tomb Raider landing very soon.

We’re right around the corner of the delayed PC release of Monster Hunter World of course — a game which is definitely on our radar for Game of the Year so far. As for all the new stuff, here are our picks for the next couple of months.

Dead Cells

August 7th – PC/Mac/Linux, PS4, Switch, Xbox One

This is the final release version of the game that we’ve already been playing for a year. A platformer with a Dark Souls-ey combat system, you’ll try to escape an island that shifts every time you die. Its randomised levels and satisfying fights would’ve been worth the price even in the early stages of its beta. Since then, it’s kept updating its brawlers, biomes, and bosses. This is Early Access done right.

Funnily enough, Dead Cells was originally going to be a tower defence game. There’s an abundance of these 2D pixel art Soulslike roguelite/metroidvanias, and we have no problem with that at all.

We Happy Few

August 10th – PC/Mac/Linux, PS4, Xbox One

We get some serious Bioshock mashed up with A Clockwork Orange vibes from this one. A futuristic, dystopian city requires everyone to take their “joy” to be happy, productive citizens.

What happens when you stop taking it? Presumably, Taye Diggs starts chasing you. The seemingly “beneficial” nature of the city’s drug has nearly resulted in the game being banned in some territories. Let’s hope it’s worth all the trouble.

Death’s Gambit

August 14th – PC, PS4

I mean, when we said there’s an abundance of these games, we meant it. Death’s Gambit is another 2D pixel art Soulslike metroidvania, seemingly a niche genre but hoo boy is it populated.

The biggest twist here is every time you die, you actually drop one of your healing items as well as your “souls.” Returning to your point of death is that much more important, now that it’s necessary to regain that healing charge.

That’s pretty cruel. Imagine if death lost you an Estus shard in Dark Souls. But Death’s Gambit is also letting you invest excess healing items to upgrade stats, sacrificing a heal or two to buff your damage or something else.

There’s also the ability to challenge a boss again right after you’ve defeated them, which is fantastic — we always felt the bonfire ascetic should’ve been carried over from Dark Souls 2 into other games.

PES 2019

August 30th – PC, PS4, Xbox One

Slated a full month before its main competitor, PES likes to be the first to market every year. Though it has to be said, a lot of the features it was spruiking at E3 this year were implemented by FIFA a year or two ago. It doesn’t help that it lost the Champions League licence as well, but people who play PES don’t play it for the licences.

We’ll still be putting this one through it’s paces because what’s important to us is under the hood. After the handful of games we’ve had it was hard to isolate and test the newer AI functionality PES 2019 is supposed to have. Things like players reading the play a few steps ahead, and responding in a way that more accurately represents their style. It’s the type of thing we’ll have to really sit down and analyse, and that’s alright with us.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

September 7th – PS4

No surprises seeing the mighty web-slinger here, as we’re pretty sure it’s the game many people are most looking forward to this year. This PS4 exclusive has many debating who the final boss could be. Who’s capable of bringing this who’s who of villains into one plan as if they were mere henchmen?

This one features combat that’s looking oh-so-Arkham, some baller Spidey suits, and – most importantly – getting across town feels great as you sling like it ain’t no thing.

We’ll be previewing this one soon, so keep FANDOM bookmarked and wait for your Spidey sense to tingle.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

September 14th – PC, PS4, Xbox One

My goodness, how much of a beating will Lara have to take before she becomes the Tomb Raider? We’re still smarting from seeing a lead pipe go right through her gut in the first reboot.

It sure looks purdy though, as long as we never have to wear the haptic suits from Ready Player One to feel every shank and bullet bothering the new, always-wounded Lara Croft, we’re up for a bit of tribal island madness.

Valkyria Chronicles 4

September 25th – PC, Xbox One, PS4, Switch

We’ve been jonesing for this one since… well, 2008, when the original Valkyria Chronicles came out. The mix of World War I and anime was a surprisingly engrossing setting for first-person, turn-based tactics.

It was fantastic fun, but for some reason the gods of gaming saw fit to limit the next two games to Sony’s PSP. No shade to PSP owners, but it’s a travesty these games weren’t available to more people.

Now at last, we get the multiplatform release we’ve been waiting for. We’re sure there are many who will see this as the proper Valkyria Chronicles 2 in a way, and we can only hope the developers have factored that into their storytelling.

FIFA 19

28th September – PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PS3, 360, Android, iOS

A full month later than its rival, the dominant football franchise lands. FIFA releases are up and down — sometimes the franchise coasts with a bunch of fluffy, cosmetic features like improved grass and spectator clapping. Other years you’ll get hyper-intelligent AI improvements and important balance tweaks.

If you’re not the sort to buy every release anyway, it’s worth paying attention to see whether that year brings one of the “good” ones.

All told, the feature list doesn’t look too disruptive this year, but the timed shots will have a massive, unignorable effect on how you play. We liked the pace and the feel of what we played at E3 this year, but much like PES, we’ll need some more time with this one before singing its praises.

ZTE allowed to resume some U.S. business activities just months after 7-year ban issued

ZTE, the Chinese smartphone maker that was banned from operating in the U.S. this past April, may already be resuming its stateside operations. And it has President Donald Trump to thank for the assist.

According to a document obtained by Bloomberg, due to pressure from the Trump administration, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security has authorized ZTE to resume some business activities as a deal is worked out regarding its ban in the country.

In April, ZTE was banned from importing phone parts from the U.S. for repeatedly misleading the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security. The U.S. intelligence community also issued a warning to U.S. consumers, urging them not to purchase phones made by certain Chinese manufacturers — including ZTE — due to spying and security concerns. Because of the ban, ZTE had ceased all U.S. operations in May. The ban was supposed to last for 7 years. Read more…

When will I sleep again? 15 months in and no end in sight

by

Kelly Wilbanks

posted in Parenting

I’m trapped in a prison of my own making. I know I should have been strong when Annie was 4 months old and needed to learn sleeping skills, but I folded time and time again. Now, I have a baby who would rather scream in her crib for hours than just lie down and get the sleep she needs. And I feel ashamed.

I remember a conversation I had with my old pastor and his wife. They shared how they left their son to cry in his bedroom all night so that he’d learn how to sleep. It worked for them. The next night he cried less and by the end of the week he was sleeping through the night. They did that with all their children and he, they claimed, had by far been their hardest.

I couldn’t bring myself to do the same with my first, Vivianne. Stories like that make me feel weak. I just can’t deal with a crying baby. I stress. I worry. I can’t seem to resist being the answer to their cry. I try to be tough — like the other night when I put Annie (my 15-month-old) in her crib to cry it out. She was in there for an hour before I folded.

Her crib is in the same room where her sisters sleep, so I sent them to my bedroom so I could tough it out with Annie. I was so tired. Her dad was on his way, but wouldn’t be home until midnight. No one was sleeping. Everyone was exhausted and I felt bad for making her sisters suffer too. I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t.

She was a sad, wet, overly-tired mess. She was practically hyperventilating. She didn’t want binkies, or to hold my hand through her crib walls, she refused any form of comfort unless it meant she could leave her crib. Her dad finally got home and held her and rocked her to sleep. It was what needed to happen to calm everyone down, but it undid the last five hours in five minutes.

Annie-crying-collage

This is my sweet girl at 6:28 p.m. and another picture of her at 11:42 p.m. I’m a third-time mom. I should have some tried-and-true theories about how this works, but Annie isn’t backing down and I have a whole household that’s being affected.

I like holding my babies and rocking them to sleep. I like the pause it gives me in my busy day to hold their little bodies close to mine and feel their weight shift onto me as they begin dreaming. I’m going to miss that when they are older. I like holding my babies. What I don’t like is when they stir from a dead sleep as soon as they sense you getting up to put them in their crib.

baby-sleeping-in-lap

I don’t feel in control of our sleeping situation and that’s embarrassing, tiring, and relentless. Not only is Annie giving me problems, but her older sisters have started upping their game, too. I’m outnumbered three-to-one at night because my husband works evenings and I’m just so tired of the battle.

How do I get back on top? This is a king-size bed, but I’m barely on it. My baby is “winning” but really losing, and my stiff body and overall grumpiness isn’t helping anyone. By the time bedtime rolls around I’m just exhausted. When my older children start jumping out of bed for one more cuddle I. Just. Can’t.

baby-taking-over-bed

There are some perks: the baristas know me and my drink of choice and prepare it for me while I’m waiting in line at my favorite coffee shop’s drive-thru. I do have a fantastic husband who helps as much as possible even though he gets less sleep than I do. I have adorable kids that I love deeply and obviously love me deeply.

I don’t have any sleep solutions right now because nothing I’ve tried is working. I’m in the trenches and rather than sprinkle this with some overly simplified advice for other people in the same place, I’d rather just say that this stage SUCKS. Being tired all the time is hard. It makes me forget the small joys, the love my kids are demonstrating even in this, and that some day I will get my bed back.

What’s your worst “I’m too tired” story?

What will Meghan Markle be learning in her six months of Princess lessons?

Stephen Lawrence Memorial, St Martin in the Fields, London, UK – 23 Apr 2018

Meghan Markle has fitted seamlessly into the royal family from the moment she started dating Harry, from bonding with the Queen’s corgis to getting an early invite to spend Christmas at Sandringham with the Windsors.

And now that the couple have tied the knot, Meghan is officially a royal, with the Queen giving Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the titles, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as a wedding present.

The newlyweds made their first public appearance as Duke and Duchess at Prince Charles’ 70th birthday party at Buckingham Palace this week, with Meghan nailing Duchess chic in a Goat dress and Philip Treacy hat.

But while she is proving herself to be in the know on royal protocol, wearing tights to public engagements and curtsying to both the Duchess of Cambridge and Queen Elizabeth on the regular, it has been revealed that Meghan will be undertaking Princess lessons.

Yes, really. The former Suits actress is set to attend six months of princess lessons to perfect her approach to the role – everything from lessons about Ascot to banquet etiquette. and while unlike Mia Thermopolis, she won’t have Julie Andrews to turn to, one of her royal aides is set to stand in and teach her all things royal.

But what will she study?

‘In terms of etiquette, there may be some advice on “British” traditions such as tea parties and formal banquets,’ The English Manner Chief Executive Alexandra Messervy explained to InStyle of Meghan’s princess lessons. ‘There will be discussions on Royal Ascot and key events in the royal year, public outings, garden parties – which she did yesterday with aplomb grace and looked super—and I don’t think much else. Her Royal Highness has already shown she has film star poise and grace.’

Happy studying, Meghan.

17 Sneakers You’ll See Everywhere in 6 Months

For sneaker obsessives like me, the end of fashion month is a bit of a letdown. After watching an assortment of new shoe styles make their way down the runways in Paris, New York, Milan, and London, we now have to wait. Those chunky-soled Guccis and sleek Pradas won’t actually be available until fall rolls around (and even then, it’s a race to snag the buzziest styles).

So even though there’s no instant gratification, we can start eyeing the styles that will sit on our closet shelves soon enough. Below, I’ve outlined 17 of my favorite sneakers to debut this season. My tip: Start saving up for your favorites now, that way you’ll be ready to add these styles to your cart as soon as they’re available.

These graphic sneakers feature some creative lacing details.
Leave it to Gucci to take embellishment to the next level. For fall, the Italian fashion house debuted hiking-boot style sneakers with a gem-encrusted overlay.
Love a little sparkle? How about a slip-on? Than these sneakers will be your go-to for Fall.
Givenchy when dark and edgy for Fall, offering up a high-top chunky soled sneaker in all black.
French label A.P.C.  keeps things simple with these understated dad sneakers.
If you’re a fan of sock sneakers, you’ll want to check out (and keep tabs on) these simple, streamlined sneakers from Stella McCartney.
One part sneaker, one part snowboard binding, these shoes definitely aren’t for the faint of heart (or the clumsy).
Love to mix and match colors? Meet your new favorite sneaker for fall.
Take a trip into the future with Prada’s alien-like sock sneakers that come in a neon green but can also be found in a more minimalist white.
A styling trick to steal from these cozy Acne sneakers? Try stepping on the heel and tying the laces around your ankle if you’re really keen to mix things up.
While the streets were full of show-goers wearing the brand’s signature Triple S sneaker, there’s a remix (featuring two pairs of laces) to keep an eye out for fall.
Virgil Abloh continues his partnership with Nike, debuting new and notable designs on the runway in Paris.
A classic clean low-top gets new boho details for fall.
First it was sparkly sneakers, now JW Anderson is reimagining his partnership with converse with these shiny multi-colored high tops.
Never one to shy from making a statement (google platform Uggs and you’ll see what we mean), Christopher Kane goes for grandpa sneakers and then adds sparkles and a spring.
Worried that pink’s moment in the sun was over? These sneakers suggest otherwise.
It’s hard to resist a little bit of shimmer and shine, even when it comes to sneakers. These gold-sold shoes are sure to be a crowd pleaser. Opening image: The Style Stalker

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS UPDATE:

What the Coolest Girls Will Be Wearing for the Next Three Months

Even though we’re jumping at the chance to try out spring’s coolest trends, sometimes the chilly weather just won’t permit wearing flirty dresses and breezy tops. So what’s a fashion girl to do when there are so many fresh trends to start wearing already?

To help beat the remaining winter blues, we’re doubling up on bright, fresh springtime pastels. Though the outfits ahead could technically be worn in winter (especially if you live somewhere like LA), fashion girls are already swapping their dark neutrals for a seasonal color palette fit for the first day of spring.

Plaid pants get a stylish makeover in baby blue and yellow. This look is giving us major ’90s nostalgia due to the fuzzy sweater and chunky sneakers.
Stripes always seem to be a springtime classic along, with florals. (Groundbreaking, we know). But there’s something about graphic, abstract stripes that feel really modern and cool.
Not a pastel type of person? Test out bold primary colors like cobalt blue and canary yellow for a fresh look with a bit of edge.
Once again, a primary color palette is totally winning us over here. We love the combination of blue, yellow, and red grounded with classic black.
If you’re going to pick just one spring-inspired color to wear right now, may we suggest yellow? The bright shade is a bit unexpected which makes it that much cooler. Test it out in a fun pair of trousers and keep the rest of the look neutral.
Okay, this wouldn’t be a spring outfit roundup if we didn’t include the color lilac. There’s no doubt that this shade of muted purple is the It color of the season.
Like we’ve said before, yellow is one of the coolest colors to try for spring. Pick one piece to wear the color in and pair it with black for a bold, cool-girl look.
The suiting trend is reimagined when rendered in vibrant fuschia. This playful statement-making set couldn’t be further from the traditional stuffy suit.
Mark our words: Cargo pants are back. (Shocking, yes, but we’re into it.) When paired with tough combat boots and a graphic sweater, the loose-fitting pants make for a casual combo that Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber would approve of.
To make any look spring-ready, pick up a fun bag like this bright-yellow Gucci one that speaks for itself.
Ready to test out the season’s freshest colors? Dip your toes in by trying out a look similar to this one. Throw on a bright jacket over your otherwise toned-down outfit, or go into full-on spring mode by layering bright blues with yellows and reds.

Bobby Brown Says Bobbi Kristina Died Months Before Public Knew

We’re learning MORE from Bobby Browns recent sit down with Us Weekly. One of the things he did was give conflicting dates about Bobbi Kristina’s passing, leading some to believe she died long before the family announced it to the public.

Instagram Photo

Brown died from lobar pneumonia on July 26, 2015, after being in a coma for nearly six months. However, according to Bobby, his daughter actually died three days before his birthday (Feb.5th), which would have been February 2, 2015.

“We do our private things to honor her,” he said. “She passed away three days before my birthday, so we definitely honor her at all times,” he said, noting that he would like for fans to remember Bobbi Kristina as someone who “was talented, beautiful and loved life.”

A possible explanation to the date confusion was reported by ILOSM:

Bobbi Kristina was found in her bathtub, unconscious with a concoction of several drugs in her system on January 31, 2015. After doctors determined she had “significantly diminished” brain function, they placed her in a medically induced coma and told Bobby Brown that chances of her fully recovering would be “a miracle.” By February 2, 2015, it was reported that Bobbi Kristina was relocated to Emory University Hospital, she remained in a coma and on a medical ventilator. Thus, Bobby’s statement that ‘she died three days before his birthday,’ adds up.

“She was a beautiful young lady. And what she wanted to do with her life, I wish everybody could have seen,” Brown exclusively told Us Weekly of the late daughter he shared with ex-wife Whitney Houston. “Music, entertainment. She was better than me. She was better than her mother.”

After Bobbi’s passing, Brown created the non-profit organization Bobby Kristina Serenity House, which raises awareness about domestic violence and provides housing and aid to victims.

“I just think people should be aware that they have someplace to go. When you are going through bad times and you are going through being abused, Bobbi Kristina’s Serenity House is there for you,” Bobby Brown told Us. “That’s the easiest way I can say it. It’s too much. Too many women and too many men are being hurt by this disease that people have, abusing people. It’s just not right. I need to do something about it.”

Meanwhile, on March 4, Bobby will host the Celebration of Serenity Gala, which would have also been Bobbi Kristina’s 25th birthday.

After loss, I didn’t have sex with my husband for 6 months

by

Melissa Willets

posted in Parenting

Two weeks after my D&E, my doctor informed me, “You are cleared to have intercourse.” I remember looking across the desk at him through dead eyes. “I don’t feel like having sex,” I said flatly. He smiled and remarked, “You may change your mind.”

Except I didn’t.

Then, weeks later, I had a saline sonogram to ensure my uterus looked healthy, in case I wanted to try and get pregnant again. “Refrain from intercourse for about 5 days,” my doctor advised. Inside I laughed. Oh, I’d been refraining. In fact, I felt like my sex drive died right along with my baby. Right along with that part of me that would ever feel like I deserved happiness again.

Now, six months after losing the baby I’d longed for for years, my husband and I only recently made love. It was quick; it was because I felt like it was time. It wasn’t passionate or special.

But we are closer than ever.

Sex after loss takes on a new meaning

Losing a child affects a marriage deeply. There were days I thought it ruined us. That we’d lose our family too. Working through those devastating moments, when I looked at him and truly believed we had nowhere to go from here, slowly revealed a new level of love. I now see a man who stands by me during the darkest times life can serve up. Through hopelessness and despair and a depression so deep that walking across a room felt impossible.

On the other side of all of that is a bond so strong that it survived the longest romantic dry spell our marriage has seen in 10 years.

Not that we were doing it all the time before our loss. With three children, the reality is that making time for intimacy wasn’t always on the top of our, ahem, to-do list.

But now, as I continue to work on putting my life back together, I still can’t wrap my mind around returning to our former married maybe-not-even-so-exciting sex life. How can we just casually jump back in bed, and resume the act that created this situation in the first place? How can I let go of all my grief long enough to enjoy sex again? How can I allow myself to experience pleasure in the midst of my pain?

These questions and more swirl around in my head every time I even consider letting a rare smooch session turn into more. Every time a cuddle starts to feel like an opportunity to let my hands wander. The moment I feel a pang of what-if, it’s struck down by the knowledge that things are different now. I am different now.

The few times I’ve given in, I feel like a scared teenager again, sans the raging hormones of desire, slowly, tenuously letting my husband kiss me. He’s holding me close, he’s stroking my hair. That’s as far as I let him go most nights.

Maybe next time, I think. To me, that’s progress from where I started, completely closed off to the idea of intimacy.

For now, I’m lucky to have a man who is satisfied with being married to a woman who chooses to just keep going. Who, just this weekend, felt up for having friends over. Who made a joke the other day. Who smiles almost every day.

I’m lucky my husband isn’t pressuring me, and that every time the subject of sex comes up, and I get teary-eyed and apologize for not feeling like I want to, he smiles at me with kind eyes and says “Whenever you are ready.”

He’ll wait for me. As if this were a new relationship; because it kinda is. Now, we are a couple who lost a baby. One day I hope we are a couple who lost a baby and has a steamy sex life. We will be two people who made it through a devastating storm, and survived. And finally feel ready to celebrate the sh*t out of that.

When did you feel ready to have sex again after loss?

Patton Oswalt Fell ‘Head Over Heels’ for Bride Meredith Salenger Months Before Meeting in Person

Patton Oswalt is still basking in that newlywed glow.

The actor, 48, gushed about his new bride, Meredith Salenger, during Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which marked his first appearance since tying the knot with his second wife. He even wore his wedding suit for the late-night program!

“I married Meredith Salenger this amazing actress and she and our wedding planner, it was like watching two people plan a bank heist,” Oswalt recalled of the planning process. “Being the groom is the best. You are a prop that eats appetizers. That’s all you are. You’re just there and they tell you where to go.”

The couple said their “I dos” in front of family and friends at the Jim Henson Studios in Los Angeles on Nov. 4, a little over a year after Oswalt’s wife Michelle McNamara died unexpectedly in her sleep in April 2016. The couple have an 8-year-old daughter Alice.

Oswalt and Salenger announced their engagement in July.

“ met online. We met through mutual friend Martha Plimpton and she threw a dinner party and she invited both of us but we never met – I couldn’t go because of some travel,” Oswalt recalled of how he missed out on being introduced to his future wife.

“And Meredith messages me the next day and says ‘You missed some amazing lasagna last night dude.’ That was on Feb. 28. We started talking, we didn’t meet face to face until May 20,” the father of one explained.

“It was very Victorian-like, exchanging letters kind of romance. Every night we would write about life, politics, books, it was all this deep stuff you do after the date. By the time we met on our first date I was so head over heels,” he added.

Following the nuptials, Salenger, 47, told PEOPLE exclusively how she strongly believed it was McNamara who orchestrated the meeting from above.

“When I first starting talking with Patton on Facebook, it was just sort of witty banter. There was nothing to it, but as I started getting to know him better, I looked up Michelle on Facebook and I saw that we had like 15 mutual friends,” she said.

“One of them was my best friend since 7th grade. I called her and was like, ‘Tell me about Michelle.’ She was best friends with Michelle after college. She was like, ‘I loved her. She’s amazing. She’s so funny and smart,’ ” Salenger recalled.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. (ET) on ABC.

Social Security’s full retirement age will rise by 2 months in 2018

If you’re planning to start collecting Social Security soon, you’ll have to wait a bit longer in 2018 to reach full retirement age (FRA).

RELATED: 14 things to know about Social Security in 2018

Full retirement age is going up

The arrival of 2018 will bring with it several changes on the Social Security front.

Among the new developments, you should plan on staying on the job an additional two months before you reach your FRA this year.

Since 2005, the FRA has been 66. But as of January 1, 2017, the FRA has been on a long, slow climb.

Beginning in 2018, people born in 1956 must wait until they are 66 years and 4 months old to receive 100% of their Social Security benefit.

That pushes the full retirement age later by two months versus this year.

Those who were born in 1955 only have to wait until they are 66 years and two months to claim full benefits in 2017.

So if workers who turn 62 in 2018 opt to take benefits as soon as they can next year, they’ll get a monthly benefit that’s reduced by about 30%.

The Social Security Administration Amendments of 1983 signed by President Reagan call for the FRA to “increase by two months a year for persons reaching age 62 in 2017-22,” further noting that it “will be fixed at age 67 for those reaching age 62 after 2022.”

Here’s a chart from the Social Security Administration that lays it all out:

Social Security: Full retirement age rising to 67

This slow increase in the full retirement age presents a challenge now that Americans are living longer and saving less.

Sadly, more than 56% of us have less than $ 1,000 saved, and half of us live paycheck to paycheck.

How to boost benefits checks before collecting Social Security

If you have some time left before you start claiming your Social Security benefits, consider the following:

Play the waiting game

In the past, it was very common to retire and take Social Security at 62. But every year you wait after 62, you have an imputed return of 8% per year on your lifetime benefit. So if you wait from 62 to 70, the amount that Social Security pays climbs dramatically. (Benefits no longer increase after 70.)

Use an online calculator to help!

AARP’s interactive calculator allows you to pop in your specifics and it will give you a decision tree to help you figure out the optimal time to take Social Security. Check it out to help yourself or a parent.

If you are looking for a more comprehensive approach to give you specifics on when it would be best to start drawing on your Social Security benefits, check out the Maximize my Social Security tool. There are different levels of analysis that you can choose, but $ 40 gives you access to sophisticated software that helps determine the best time to start receiving your checks. They also offer a money-back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied.

Boost your earnings today

What you get from Social Security has everything to do with your 35 highest earning years. So you might consider negotiating a raise or taking on a second job.

We can help you on the latter front. Our work from home guide has legitimate ways you can earn some extra money. None of the sites listed will make you rich, but they will help you supplement your existing income.

How can I play catch-up on my own retirement savings?

Know how much you’ll need to retire

By age 35, you should have two times your annual salary saved up for retirement, according to the latest numbers from Fidelity Investments.

Five years later, you should have three times your annual salary. And on and on, until you reach 67 when you should have 10 times your annual salary saved.

Laid out visually, the Fidelity guidelines for individuals look like this:

  • By 35, save two times your gross annual salary
  • By 40, save three times your gross annual salary
  • By 45, save four times your gross annual salary
  • By 50, save six times your gross annual salary
  • By 55, save seven times your gross annual salary
  • By 60, save eight times your gross annual salary
  • By 67, save 10 times your gross annual salary

Make extra contributions to retirement savings if you’re over 50

If you’re coming into the savings game kind of late, you can play catch-up. You have to be 50 or over to do this, but here’s how it works:

  • If you have a 401(k), 403(b), most 457 plans or the federal government’s Thrift Savings Plan, you can make an extra $ 6,000 contribution. (That’s on top of the existing $ 18,000 contribution limit for these plans.)
  • For those with IRAs, your can contribute an additional $ 1,000, for a grand total of $ 6,500 in annual contributions.

Be sure to work with fee-only financial planners

If you decide to enlist the services of an advisor, be sure he or she is what’s called ‘fee only.’ That means they earn their income on an hourly or ongoing basis, not on commissions from the investments they steer you towards.

Visit NAPFA.org (The National Association for Personal Financial Advisors) for ongoing fee-only help planning for retirement or GarrettPlanningNetwork.com for one-time advice on an hourly basis.

RELATED: Know the right questions to ask of a fee-only financial planner

Strive to reduce debt in your life

Being debt free buys you so much freedom. And today it’s easier to become debt free than at any time in recent memory because of dirt cheap interest rates. If you’re still paying high interest rates, like on a credit card, get a lower interest card if you can qualify and transfer the balance.

Look at that box on your monthly statement and see what you’d have to pay to be debt free in three years. Then resolve to pay that each and every month. You need to budget money to pay down your debt just as you would budget for rent or a mortgage or a car payment.

Beware of this Social Security phone scam!

Britney Spears And Charlie Ebersol Reportedly Split After 8 Months Of Dating

Britney Spears is single, according to Us Weekly.

The magazine reports that the singer and boyfriend Charlie Ebersol have split. The two started dating in October 2014.

No word on what went down between the two, but Us Weekly points out that Spears has already deleted all photos of Ebersol, who is the son of “Saturday Night Live” co-creator Dick Ebersol, from her Instagram account, though it seems she hasn’t gotten around to it on Twitter just yet.

In addition to erasing him from her social media, it seems like the 33-year-old singer might be throwing a bit of shade her ex’s way as well. On Sunday, Spears posed in a bikini next to a male friend and she captioned the photo, “So nice to be home! Nothing like Louisiana boys.”

The Huffington Post has reached out to Spears’ rep for comment.
