60% of People Who Try This Raise Their Credit Score Within 6 Months

Your credit score is important. The better your score, the better deal you’ll get on a mortgage, car loan or credit card. We’re talking big money here.

Even if you’re not buying a house anytime soon, a lousy credit score means you’ll get hit with a high security deposit whenever you rent a car or move into a new apartment.

To keep a closer eye on your credit, get your credit score and a “credit report card” for free from Credit Sesame. It breaks down exactly what’s on your credit report in layman’s terms, how it affects your score and how to address it.

The app makes it easy to manage your credit — so you can work on boosting your score.

In fact, 60% of Credit Sesame members see an increase in their credit score; 50% see at least a 10-point increase, and 20% see at least a 50-point increase after 180 days.

Can You Raise Your Credit Score by 100+ Points?

Does it sound too good to be true? We thought it might be, too — so we checked it out for ourselves.

Dana Sitar, an editor for The Penny Hoarder, found Credit Sesame in 2016, and by finally seeing what was going on with her credit, she has been able to raise her score 101 points — from 528 to 629.

We’ve talked to lots of others who have used the platform to better manage and raise their scores, too.

James Cooper knows all about having bad credit. As recently as 2017, his credit score was a lousy 524.

“I never had a credit card,” he says. “I had $ 6,000 worth of unpaid bills.”

Cooper raised his score by 277 points — from 524 to 801 — over the six months from June to November 2017.

Before coming across Credit Sesame, Jerry Morgan hadn’t bothered to check his credit score in, well, quite a while.

“Frankly, with the experiences we have gone through, I was embarrassed to even check my score,” he said.

Following recommendations from the service, he raised his score 120 points in six months.

Since signing up for Credit Sesame in January 2017, Elisabeth Nyang paid off a $ 17,500 pile of debt and raised her score from 495 to 663. That’s a 168-point jump.

By 2010, Melinda Smieja had racked up somewhere between $ 20,000 and $ 30,000 in debt on 11 credit cards after years of caring for her terminally ill daughter. Her credit score was down to 480 by the time she checked on Credit Sesame.

In 2016, for the first time, Smieja’s credit score hit 680, crossing the line of what lenders consider “good credit.” By late 2017, it was up to 764.

Secrets to Raise Your Credit Score

A woman checks her credit score on credit sesame

Once you sign up to get your free credit score and credit report card, Credit Sesame will give you personalized recommendations to better manage your credit and boost your score.

To get you started, here are a few of our favorite tips:

  1. Spot any errors.

Did you know your credit score could be inaccurate? One out of five credit reports have an error, according to the Federal Trade Commission. On your credit report card, you should be able to spot any errors, then dispute the incorrect information and raise your credit score.

  2. Use less than 30% of your available credit.

An important part of your credit score is how much of your available credit you’re using. Most experts suggest keeping it below 30%, but the lower, the better.

You could call your credit card companies to ask for a high credit limit (then avoid spending more). Or, you can open a new credit card to raise your overall limit. Credit Sesame can suggest credit cards you’re most likely to qualify for, so you won’t waste your time with rejected applications.

  3. Stick old credit cards in the freezer.

The length of your credit history accounts for 15% of your credit score, so closing old credit cards could actually hurt your score. Instead, when you’re ready to stop using an old card, freeze it, instead of cutting it up.

Credit Sesame will show you the age of all of your credit accounts, so you can manage your credit age wisely.

Credit Sesame will show you the age of all of your credit accounts, so you can manage your credit age wisely.

Credit Sesame does not guarantee any of these results, and some may even see a decrease in their credit score. Any score improvement is the result of many factors, including paying bills on time, keeping credit balances low, avoiding unnecessary inquiries, appropriate financial planning and developing better credit habits.

Couple: ‘We Paid Off $114,151 in Debt in 23 Months’

Money is always a sticky subject when it comes to relationships. It’s the reason why most marriages end in divorce. Instead of letting debt take over their lives, this couple tackled it head-on. BLACK ENTERPRISE caught up with Jhanilka and Anthony Hartzog, a millennial couple who had to face the reality of discussing finances and finding a pragmatic solution to tackling their overwhelming debt.

When did you know you were in over your heads?

Christmas 2016, we were excited to get gifts for the family. We put a ton of gifts on our credit cards, as we normally pay them off when due. After the holidays, we quickly realized we were in over our heads with credit card debt and had to dip into our savings to pay them off. As a New Year’s resolution, Jhanilka decided she wanted to save more and travel more. We were completely aware that this would be a difficult thing to do. However, in January 2017, we sat down and discussed our debt as a whole. In this discussion came to the decision to pay everything off (student loans, car, credit card debt, etc). We had never realized what our total amount of debt was. We had $ 114,151 in total debt and that was when it hit us.

What was your first step to paying off debt?

Our first step to paying off debt was to calculate the total and create a game plan. Anthony religiously listened to Dave Ramsey’s podcast The Dave Ramsey Show and read his book The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness. This helped us to know where to start on our journey. We began with a budget. In addition to our budget, we adopted the debt snowball method, paying off the smallest to largest debt and tracked it on an amortization spreadsheet. From there, we were able to project how long it would take us to pay off the debt by only paying the minimum. We decided to start to take on more side hustles and did this in order to move the timeline of paying it off it into 23 months. We were able to meet our goal right in time for Jhanilka’s 30th birthday.

What were some everyday practices you executed to get rid of the debt?

Some everyday practices were making sure we stayed on track with our budget (this took us 4 months to successfully accomplish), as well as having our monthly budget meetings to go over our spending habits and discuss how we could save more. Money has become a part of our everyday conversations. It came to the point that we were excited to see our progress and hold each other accountable.

What are some practices you implement now to stay out of debt?

We are staying out of debt by not taking on new debt, not using credit cards and being more intentional with our money. We now have a 6-month emergency fund. This will help us avoid taking on new debt in the event of any life-changing circumstances. We also continue to do our budget and have our monthly budget meetings.

What CNN learned watching Robert Mueller for 18 months

Editor’s Note: When special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed to investigate Russian meddling in the US election, CNN, like most news organizations, endeavored to learn what we could about the famously secretive team’s work. So, in addition to other newsgathering efforts, CNN had journalists who stood outside their offices. Journalists often call this a stakeout. Here, the CNN team lays out the backstory of their assignment and how this investment of time yielded big journalistic returns.

Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski Announces Retirement At Age 29 After Months Of Speculation

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has announced he is retiring. After months of speculation that the 29-year-old star player would be hanging up his cleats, the man himself released a statement confirming the rumors.

As with all other celebrity announcements these days, The Gronk, used Instagram to break the news to fans he was done with football.

“It all started at 20 years old on stage at the NFL draft when my dream came true, and now here I am about to turn 30 in a few months with a decision I feel is the biggest of my life so far. I will be retiring from the game of football today,” he shared at the beginning of a very lengthy post.

Gronkowski went on to thank the two men who gave him a chance of a lifetime, owner Robert Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity that Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick gave to me when drafting my silliness in 2010. My life experiences over the last nine years have been amazing both on and off the field,” he continued.

The football player also expressed his gratitude for his teammates, as well as Patriots fans, who are affectionally referred to as Pats Nation.  He shared how it was his privilege to be part of such a magnificent team and franchise.

“To all my current and past teammates, thank you for making each team every year special to be a part of. I will truly miss you guys. Cheers to all who have been part of this journey, cheers to the past for the incredible memories, and a HUGE cheers to the uncertain of whats next.” The Gronk praised those who had his back on and off the field.

Thank you for everyone accepting who I am and the dedication I have put into my work to be the best player I could be. But now its time to move forward and move forward with a big smile knowing that the New England Patriots Organization, Pats Nation, and all my fans will be truly a big part of my heart for rest of my life. It was truly an incredible honor to play for such a great established organization and able to come in to continue and contribute to keep building success. The New England Patriots will be down one of their most invaluable and talked about players when football returns this fall. Rob Gronkowski has decided it is time to close the chapter on football and move on to something new. His announcement is not all that surprising, as fans have been speculating, he was done playing the game.

It will be tough to replace The Gronk in the eyes of those that played football with him and those who spend their Sunday’s cheering him for the past ten years. Pats Nation is definitely going to feel the loss of Gronkowski.

Mike Thalassitis hinted at secret struggle with depression on social media just months before his tragic death

MIKE Thalassitis liked a series of online posts and articles about mental health in the months prior to his tragic death at the weekend.

The Love Island star, 26, was found hanged in woodland near his North London home following a secret six month battle with depression.

Prior to his death, the former semi-pro footballer liked a post about the condition from brain coach Jim Kwik.

It read: “The truth is, none of us really know how much someone else is hurting.

“We could be standing right beside someone who feels completely broken or facing the battle of their lives and have no idea.

“Be kind, always.”

The popular reality star also liked a Guardian article raising awareness of anxiety and depression.

Published in January, columnist Gaby Hinsliff looked at how exercise and hobbies such as cooking can have a positive effect on mental well-being.

Another tweet liked by Mike, suggested he was focused on a brighter future.

The post read: “Try not to watch anyone else next year, everyone’s timing is different.

“Your time will come just focus on yourself and have a better year than the last.

“Learn from your mistakes and use them to build yourself.

“If next year’s not your year, make it count towards the year that will be.”

Earlier today The Sun Online exclusively revealed how Mike was secretly battling depression for at least six months before his tragic death.

The star was excited about his new business outside of the showbiz world Love Island brought him[/caption]

A close friend said the star had been taking anti-depressants since September after an “absolutely horrible” time.

They explained: “Mike was openly talking to people about the awful time he’d been having lately and he had lots of good friends who were supporting him.

“Everybody knew he was taking anti-depressants, but he insisted to friends that he was sorting himself out and things were ‘getting better’.

“Mike was very open and honest about his feelings and admitted life had gone downhill after his Love Island fame had started to wane – but he was looking forward to the future and his new business.

“He spoke about how he longed to return to his old life and play football again with his mates. His old club Margate FC were even open to him coming back as a player.

BPM Media

Mike longed to return to his roots as a lower-league player[/caption]

“However, Mike was too down; he was convinced he wasn’t good enough, said he wasn’t fit enough and feared he wouldn’t be accepted as a footballer again.”

The friend explained how Mike missed the football world, where he was known simply as ‘Thala’ rather than the ‘Muggy Mike’ moniker he’d gained on Love Island.

Between 2010 and 2017, he played as a striker for teams including Stevenage,  Chelmsford City and Margate.

They explained: “Mike loved the parties and hanging out with his showbiz pals but someone called him ‘Thala’ the other week and he was thrilled. He said: ‘It’s so nice to hear that again.’

Mike’s new project The Skillet in Loughton was due to open next week[/caption]

“Ultimately, he would have loved to return to playing – but he was just too depressed to make the leap.”

Mike’s pals were astonished by his tragic death because all signs were pointing to a massive change in fortunes for the star.

He had just finished filming the forthcoming series of MTV’s Ex On The Beach.

Also, his beloved restaurant The Skillet, a joint venture with footballer pal Scott Neilson, was due to open which he was hugely excited about – with the pair even having sent out invites to the grand opening.

He had been obsessed with everything to do with his new venture[/caption]

The pal told us: “Mike was so thrilled about his restaurant and would talk about it non-stop. Everyone was convinced he was getting better as he was so passionate about his new venture.”

They added: “He was involved in everything from the menus to the colour of the walls and spoke about how excited he was about it right up until the night before he died.

“It’s a tragedy that he will never get to see all his brilliant plans come to fruition.”

YOU'RE NOT ALONE

EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide.

It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others.

How This Couple Paid Off $83K of Debt in 20 Months Living in Pricy Seattle

The typical equation for paying off debt looks like this:

Income – Expenses = Amount you can pay toward debt

May the math be ever in your favor.

But for most people, it’s not. Especially if you’re living in one of the highest cost-of-living cities in America without the income to match.

That’s where Cody and Georgi Boorman found themselves in January 2014, living paycheck to paycheck in Seattle.

At that time, the cost of living in Seattle was 9.3% higher than the U.S. as a whole. Rent prices were a whopping 29.3% higher, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Cody and Georgi both had recently earned bachelor’s degrees from the University of Washington that left them with $ 56,000 of student loan debt. They also owed $ 27,000 on a car loan, putting their total debt at $ 83,000.

Cody was a quality control lead for a credit card payments company; Georgi was a baker and freelance writer.

“We were getting to a point where it didn’t matter if we were getting a little bit of a raise or a bonus,” Cody said. “We would look at our bank account at the end of the month and it would be the same number as when we started the month.”

But then they decided they wanted kids. They knew they couldn’t afford any in their current state.

The First Steps They Took to Crush Their Debt

Georgi holds her two-year-old daughter Eloise.

The Boormans’ journey started with one goal: pay off the car.

The bill for their 2012 Honda Civic was $ 465 per month, and they owed $ 8,000 more than it was worth. If they could get rid of that payment, they’d have enough wiggle room to start saving for a baby.

So they started looking at unique opportunities that their city provided them to lower their expenses.

They switched cell phone carriers from Verizon, which they paid $ 120 per month, to Republic Wireless, which they now pay about $ 34 per month.

Groceries are another expense that typically cost more in big cities.

But Cody noticed that because there are so many options in each neighborhood, the stores are constantly competing. So they shopped for deals and used Costco to keep their grocery bill at $ 75 per week.

After five months, they paid the Civic down to value.

They realized the cost to drive their car was astronomical for the number of miles they traveled. They only drove to work, the grocery store and church, plus they made one trip per month to see family one to three hours away.

That’s another benefit of living in a city: Everything is close together.

So instead of continuing to pay the car off, they sold it back to the dealer and bought a Nissan Altima for $ 2,400.

And not only did they eliminate their car payment, but they were also able to lower their car insurance from full coverage to liability-only coverage, which saved them another $ 50 per month.

By the time they eliminated their car payment, they were on a roll. But they decided they didn’t just want to be car-payment free. They wanted to be completely debt-free.

“It almost started to become a game,” Cody said. “Like, ‘How quickly can we actually do this now that we have everything out in front of us?’”

And then, a week later, Georgi lost her job.

How They Paid Off $ 80,000 in 20 Months

Georgi and Cody Boorman pose with their daughter Eloise, 2, in front of their home in Moses Lake, WA.

Georgi was only unemployed for four weeks, but her new job paid 20% less. It was a hit. But it made them all the more motivated to finish paying off their student loans.

So they made and followed a budget every month. After every raise or bonus, they put more toward the debt, and eventually, 70% of their take-home pay was going to debt payments — which is impressive when you consider the exorbitant costs of rent in Seattle.

But because there are lots of rentals in a booming city, there are still opportunities to find a deal. Cody found their rental by searching Craigslist for the term “ASAP.”

“We knew people who needed to rent their units out ASAP would rent them out at a lower cost,” he said.

The Boormans paid $ 1,250 per month for their apartment, which was only a mile from their jobs.

And they didn’t stop there. This new financial picture gave them room to dream bigger than they ever could have even one year prior. They wanted to buy a house and were now in a position to do so… just not in Seattle.

The couple knew that when they started a family they wanted to be near family. So in the middle of their debt-free journey, they saved up $ 3,000 and moved three hours east to Moses Lake, Washington.

The move didn’t significantly lower their cost of living or help them pay off the debt faster. But because of all the work they’d done in the 13 months prior, they were able to seize the right opportunity at the right time.

In August 2015, six months after moving into their new house, Cody and Georgi became debt-free.

And in October 2016, their first daughter Eloise was born.

Bigger Picture

The Boorman's wrote a book,

Since Cody and Georgi paid off their debt, they haven’t slowed down.

They’ve continued to get raises and pursue freelance work, and their income is now up to $ 90,000. They’re using the extra cash to try to reach financial independence — or the ability to live off passive income from investments and businesses —  in the next five years to spend more time with Eloise and their future kids.

Their journey started with paying off their car loan and grew into a new way to look at life and spending. One that values free time over more stuff.

Earlier this year, they co-wrote the book “Clocking Out Early” to teach others to cut expenses, invest well and retire early — no matter what their income or the cost of living of their city.

Now when it comes to spending money, Cody asks himself this question: “What can we do to reduce this expense, and ultimately, maybe increase our happiness?”

Chris Stapleton’s Wife Pregnant With Fifth Child, Seven Months After Welcoming Twins

Country star Chris Stapleton announced during a concert on Friday, November 2, that he and wife Morgane are expecting their fifth child, seven months after welcoming twins.

“I’ve got an announcement to make. Some of you may know that we have four children,” the “Tennessee Whiskey” singer, 40, told the audience at Madison Square Garden in NYC on Friday, according to a video posted by The Blast. “We just had twins, about seven months ago. Now there’s four of us, but we’re gonna make it five!”

Morgane, who was onstage with her husband, smiled happily at her husband after his speech.

As previously reported, the couple welcomed their twin boys in March and the singer was unable to attend the Academy of Country Music Awards to accept his Album of the Year award the following month because of the babies’ early arrival.

“Chris couldn’t be here cause Morgane’s expecting twins,” the show’s host, Reba McEntire, said as she accepted Stapleton’s award in his absence. “We just found out that those little rascals came a little bit early. Hot off the press! Twin boys.”

The couple, who recently celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary, are also parents of a girl, 8, and boy, 6.

The private pair, who haven’t publicly announced their kids’ names, shared a photo of their twins in a post on Morgane’s Instagram account in April that showed the mom cradling her newborn babies.

“We’re so grateful to finally be home with our sweet family,” she wrote on April 18. “We would like to say a special thank you to all the incredible nurses & doctors at Centennial Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Nashville. At more than a month early, we had a week long stay in the nicu & the incredible people there kept our boys healthy & happy. Words cannot express our gratitude for you all & what you did for our family. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!”

Months Before Pittsburgh Shooting, Stripe and PayPal Were Warned About Gab

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Months before they cut ties with the extremist-friendly social-media site Gab, tech companies were warned about incitement to violence on the website, according to emails reviewed by The Daily Beast.

The payment processors Stripe and PayPal stopped working with Gab on Saturday after it was revealed that a man who allegedly murdered 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue had been an active Gab user who authored violently anti-Semitic posts and shortly before the killing spree, appeared to announce his intentions to his Gab followers. But over the summer Stripe and PayPal received warnings about the site’s role in online hate.

The Twitter user @DeplatformHate has been documenting the far right’s partnerships with Silicon Valley for nearly a year and repeatedly tweeted about Stripe’s ties to Gab in August. After Stripe’s general counsel reached out on August 17, Deplatform Hate sent him and Stripe’s CEO a long email on August 24, documenting the issue.
