A 30-year-old nurse and single mother with $ 150,000 in student loan debt received an absolutely life-changing surprise on Wednesday.

Jasmin Ford was surprised with the news that Fifth Third Bank was going to be paying off her student loans entirely. “I still can’t find the words,” the mother said on Thursday. “I’m off work again today and I’m just sort of pacing around and restless because I know my life is going to change.”

Ford is a Chicago native and was the first in her family to graduate from college. She received her bachelor’s degree in 2011 and then became a nurse three years later after going back to school for her nursing degree. She finished her Master’s degree in nursing in 2015. With no family assistance, she said she had to take out student loans in order to cover necessities like food and rent in addition to tuition.

“I could not foresee when I’d be able to pay it off,” Ford said of her debt. “I just knew this was going to be a part of my life as long as I was alive unless there was some significant change, which — wow.” Ford said she now envisions being able to use her nursing career to give back even more and “pay it forward.”

“I just imagine being able to spend more time physically with my family, not having to hustle, having mental freedom and with that, some spiritual freedom,” she said. “I can open myself to more experiences, opportunities and just be able to sit and be with my thoughts and be able to pursue what it is I came to do.”

She also said that life will change for her son, Caleb, who is going to turn 2 in February. While struggling to pay back her debt, Ford worked nearly every day of the week at two jobs. “His life will be totally different,” she said. “I’m so happy and so proud that I’m able to offer that to him more than anything else because he deserves it.”

Jasmine Ford was surprised by Fifth Third Bank after being chosen to participate in a documentary that the Ohio-based bank was producing on the student loan debt. She didn’t know she was being awarded $ 150K for her loans, because she thought the film crew was simply coming back to her home on Wednesday to shoot some additional video.

Next year, Fifth Third Bank plans to pay off student debt for two more people. The bank will pay off loans of up to $ 39,000 for two users of Fifth Third Momentum, the bank’s student loan initiative that rounds up a customer’s debit card purchases and applies it to their student loan balance.

GoFundMe for Jazmine Headley, Brooklyn Mother Who had Baby Ripped From Her Arms by Cops, Exceeds $25,000 Goal

A GoFundMe campaign to raise $ 25,000 for Jazmine Headley, the Brooklyn mother who had her toddler wrestled from her arms by police, exceeded its goal– raising $ 30,894 in just a day.

In a viral video, the 23-year-old mother holds on desperately to her one-year-old son as police officers forcibly attempt to separate the child from her arms.

The police were called in after Headley refused a request to stop sitting on the floor of a Human Resources Administration facility. She was on the floor, reportedly, because there were no chairs available as she waited for service.

Headley was arrested and spent time on Riker’s Island, but was freed after New York City Mayor Bill deBlasio’s office convinced the Brooklyn District Attorney to drop the charges against her, reports CBS News.

The GoFundMe was started by the Brooklyn Defender Service, the legal team that got Headley out of jail. According to a note posted on the GoFundMe page, the funds will be used to help Headley get back on her feet and also to “help her pay for child care and other expenses, allowing her to get back to the job and life that is waiting for her.”

The incident is the latest in what has become routine acts of police brutality against people of color. In May, a 23-year-old woman was violently arrested at a Waffle House in Alabama, after she refused to pay $ 0.50 cents for plastic spoons and had requested a corporate phone number to lodge a complaint.

Earlier this year, 22-year-old Stephon Clark was fatally shot by police in his grandmother’s backyard after cops mistook his cellphone for a gun.

And more recently, Jemel Roberson, an armed security guard who apprehended a shooting suspect in a Chicago bar, was mistakenly shot dead by police who thought he was the perpetrator.

Kendall Jenner bonds with Ben Simmons’ mother during NBA game

OHMYGOSSIP — Kendall Jenner bonded with Ben Simmons’ mother during an NBA game on Friday night (30.11.18).
The 23-year-old model’s relationship with the 22-year-old basketball star appears to have become more serious over recent weeks, with Kendall now becoming a frequent guest at Ben’s games.
The brunette beauty was spotted laughing and joking with Ben’s mother Julie Simmons as they both supported the Australian star and his Philadelphia 76ers team.
The pair appeared happy and relaxed together as Ben helped his team to a 123-98 victory against the Washington Wizards.
Despite remaining tight-lipped about their burgeoning romance, Kendall’s increased presence at 76ers games is being seen as a sign that things are heating up between the celebrity duo.
However, an insider recently insisted that Kendall and Ben don’t want to put any “stress or pressure” on their relationship.
The high-profile pair are eager to ensure they don’t take things too fast.
A source explained: “Kendall and Ben have been making more of an effort in their relationship recently, and have been seeing each other regularly for the last month now.
“They both are very busy with their careers, but have always been in touch.”
Kendall and Ben were rumoured to have ended their romance earlier this year.
But it’s since been claimed that they are instead simply keen to make sure they don’t rush things or become too intense.
The insider explained: “They never had a falling out, it was just always hard for Kendall because of her work schedule.
“They reconnected when Ben was in town recently and have been seeing each other since.
“Kendall really likes Ben and he has been keeping her attention. They try not to put stress or pressure on the relationship, but Kendall isn’t actively seeing anyone else right now.”

Say What Now? Mother Among Four Arrested for Trying to Sell Babies on Instagram

Indonesian authorities busted a child trafficking operation that involved buying and selling babies on Instagram.

via CNN:

Four people were arrested, including a 22-year-old mother and 29-year-old suspected broker in Indonesia’s second largest city Surabaya, police said in a press conference Sunday.

A midwife and a suspected buyer were also arrested on the resort island of Bali.

Authorities were alerted to an account on the popular photo-sharing site with the handle “Konsultasi Hati Privat,” or Private Heart Consultation, that presents itself as offering pregnancy consultations and adoption services.

However, police said they have found evidence that monetary transactions were being carried out.

The head of criminal investigation unit in Surabaya’s police force , AKBP Sudamiran, said Tuesday that his team foiled an attempt by a 22-year-old mother, identified as LA, to sell her 11-month-old baby to a buyer in Bali, known as NS, using the messaging service WhatsApp. The baby was allegedly being offered for 15 million rupiah (about $ 987).

The Instagram account was still active early Friday and had more than 700 followers, having been running for about a year. It has since been taken down.

Images featured on the page included black and white photos of ultrasounds, pregnant mothers and babies with their faces blurred.

In one image posted on September 15, a baby, referred to as C86, was featured alongside information such as age, gender and religion. A contact number is provided with a message urging those who want to adopt or who want to leave a child for adoption to get in touch.

The account also featured screenshots from WhatsApp conversations between the account owner and pregnant women or mothers. In one conversation, a woman who is seven months pregnant says she is unmarried and wants to find someone to adopt her child and to hide her until she gives birth so that her family doesn’t find out.

The head of Indonesia’s National Commission for Child Protection (KPAI), Sustano, who like many Indonesians has one name, said social media has changed the way traffickers conduct business.

“In the old days, the transaction happened in person and it was usually arranged through a middleman,” he said. “But now, they are using new and more advance methods, through social media like Instagram and Facebook. The cyber world has become a tool for promotion and transaction.”

Sustano says traffickers are drawn to social media because “it is considered more effective, the deal happens directly between seller and buyer, and it is not easy to be detected by law enforcement.

“If the use of Instagram is proven in this case then it shows how traffickers constantly adapt to new methods for their trade,” added Amanda Bissex, Chief of Child Protection at UNICEF. She believes it’s now important that authorities “adapt their policy and legislative response to prevent such crimes, particularly against children, young girls and women.”

Indonesia is a major source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that 100,000 children are trafficked each year in Indonesia, with the majority being forced into the sex trade.

In its 2018 Trafficking in Persons Report, the US government rated Indonesia as Tier 2, saying that the country “did not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking.” Indonesia was however, “making significant efforts to do so.”

All four of the arrested individuals face up to 15 years in prison for violating child protection laws.

A Mother of the Movement Bares Her Soul and Stands Her Ground

Lucy McBath suffered a string of miscarriages so, there was a time when she grappled with the fear that she might never be a mother. But she never in her darkest dreams imagined becoming a mother who would have to bury her only son.

There are somewhere between 600,000 and 1,000,000 books published worldwide each year, depending on whose statistics you trust. It’s a big number, so standing out is tough. But McBath’s Standing Our Ground does.

Part memoir, part history lesson, it is also, as its book jacket attests, “a faith-based exploration of how the nation’s gun laws put a deadly target on American lives,” and African American males lives, especially. “Lucy has become the David to the gun lobby’s Goliath, proving that when gun violence survivors and mothers speak out, we can and will win,” says Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

Few are better positioned to expound on these matters. McBath is a woman deeply grounded in her Christian faith. It is how she was raised, and she has nurtured the seed her parents planted through many a trial, disappointment, and devastation, including the 2012 murder of her teenage son.

Jordan Davis

(Instagram)

When his killer invoked Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law as a defense, McBath was propelled into a passionate fight for gun control and justice, not merely for her own child, but for all. She retired from a 30-year career with Delta Airlines to become the national spokesperson for both Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Unwittingly, she also became one of the so-called Mothers of the Movement, along with eight other black women most of whom lost their sons to senseless and unjustifiable force at the hands of police. Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, was the only other mother who lost her son to a self-professed vigilante in the state of Florida. Her son’s murderer succeeded in using the Stand Your Ground law to gain an acquittal. McBath’s son’s killer is now serving a life sentence in jail.

A Bright Future Ends on Black Friday

It was the day after Thanksgiving 2012: Black Friday. Jordan Davis, 17, sat in the rear of his friend Tommie Stornes’ red Dodge Durango with two other friends parked in front of a gas station convenience store. Michael Dunn, who was white, pulled into the space alongside them and waited while his girlfriend went into the store.

After telling the young men to turn down their hip-hop music and a brief exchange of words, Dunn grabbed a gun from the glovebox of his own car and opened fire on the unarmed teens inside the Durango.

Terrified, Stornes threw the car into reverse, trying to escape the hail of bullets. As they sped away, Dunn exited his car and continued to aim and shoot. Three of the teens survived that day; young Jordan Davis, shot several times, died in his best friend’s arms.

It is not surprising that McBath’s book, written with collaborator Rosemarie Robotham, is so moving. The surprise is that it is so uplifting. But if you know Lucia McBath (full disclosure: I do), you know that’s who she is.

Now running for Congress from the state of Georgia, McBath has seized every opportunity to educate the public, call out the gun lobby for the blood on their hands, and change the gun laws to preserve lives. She has even faced down the provocative issue of anti-choice-pro-gun evangelicals as a featured subject in the award-winning documentary, The Armor of Light. McBath, the former flight attendant, has shied away from nothing that she sees as her divine calling to reduce gun violence in this country. Hillary Clinton, who has endorsed McBath as a congressional candidate, also endorses her book, saying, “Lucy, in the face of tragedy, turned her sorrow into a strategy, and her mourning into a movement.”

As McBath notes repeatedly in the book, she’s not trying to be a hero. She simply sees no other choice. “When tragedy arrived at my door in a sudden senseless burst of gunfire, I thought I had failed my child,” McBath writes movingly in her book’s introduction. “I believed my life was over. And perhaps it was. But a new life opened up before me and there was nothing else for me to do but claim it.

“In telling my story—and honoring the life of the child God entrusted to me—I am claiming it still.” It’s how she loves Jordan now.
