Jury Convicts Man In Murder Of 2 Sleeping Children

One of the nine alleged gang members accused in the 2016 murders of two children as they slept in their Georgia home, was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole plus 22 years.

According to Channel 2 Action News, Jamon Bynum, 28, was one of several men who stormed the home the evening of Oct. 22, shooting 11-year-old Tatiyana Coates and her brother, 15-year-old Daveon Coates, in their beds, authorities said.

Clayton County police believe the target was, Deundre Mitchell, who they suspected of stealing weapons from a DeKalb County apartment. Mitchell, who is from Chattanooga, also faces murder charges.

“They likely thought Deundre was one of the children in the bed,” Clayton County police Chief Kevin Roberts said at a news conference announcing indictments in the case last year. “But (Tatiyana and Daveon) could not have known the harm that was coming their way.”

Bynum is the first suspect to go to trial in the case. He was convicted on 43 counts, the jury reportedly brought down a guilty verdict after deliberating for just 20 minutes.

Say What Now? Mother-Daughter Duo Charged in Murder of Pregnant Teen Whose Baby Was Cut Out of Her Womb

A mother who lost her son in a few years ago and her daughter were charged in the sadistic slaying of a pregnant 19-year-old whose baby boy was cut out of her womb after she was strangled to death.

via NYDN:

Clarisa Figueroa, 46, and her daughter, Desiree, 24, were both charged with first-degree murder in the death of Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, Chicago police said at a news conference Thursday.

A third person, Piotr Bobak, 40, was charged with concealment of a homicide. Bobak is the elder Figueroa’s boyfriend.

Cops said a coaxial cable was used to strangle Ochoa-Lopez. The device was discovered in the same garbage can where her body was found in the Figueroa’s backyard on May 14.

“Words really cannot express how disgusting and thoroughly disturbing these allegations are,” Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

When asked for a motive in the murder, Johnson replied, “Let’s look at what the crime was.”

“Only they can know that. We can only assume [they wanted to] raise the child as their own,” he added. Johnson noted that the 46-year-old Figueroa’s 20-year-old son died of natural causes in 2017.

Police said Ochoa-Lopez, who was nine months pregnant, had bought baby clothes from the elder Figueroa in the past.

The victim had gone over to Figueroa’s house the day she was murdered, on April 23, to purchase more clothes and other baby items.

A spokesperson for the victim’s family, Cecilia Garcia, said Figueroa made it seem as if she was “giving clothes away, supposedly under the pretense that her daughters had been given clothes and they had all these extra boy clothes.”

Four hours after Ochoa-Lopez was seen driving to the suspect’s home, Figueroa was spotted “standing out on the street with a baby” and calling 911. Authorities confirmed they did receive a call for help about a baby from the same address where Ochoa-Lopez’s body was later found.

They said at the time the call was made, authorities had no indication Ochoa-Lopez was in that area.

Figueroa’s daughter, Desiree, allegedly confessed to police that she assisted her mom in strangling Ochoa-Lopez, according to The Chicago Tribune. Police did not disclose details on how the baby was removed from Ochoa-Lopez’s womb.

The baby boy is currently still in “grave condition” and not expected to survive, Johnson said.

“I can’t even imagine, pretend to imagine, what that family is going through right now,” he said. “They should be celebrating the birth of a young baby. Instead, they’re mourning the loss of a mother and possibly that young child.”

Ochoa-Lopez’s father, Arnulfo Ochoa, questioned both the hospital’s and the police’s effort in the case, saying he believed they did not give it enough attention early on because of the family’s immigrant background, the Tribune reported.

“We came to this country to give a good life for my daughter,” he said Thursday. “We just want justice for what they did for my daughter.”

This sounds like something STRAIGHT from a horror film.

Victim Shot In Nipsey Hussle Murder Arrested For Parole Violation

Nipsey Hussle Memorial - Day 2

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN

Kerry Lathan, the man who Nipsey Hussle was buying clothes for on the day that beloved rapper was gunned down, has been arrested on a parole violation.

Lathan, 56, who was one of the two men who were shot and wounded during the March 31 shooting has been in jail since Monday. One of the terms for most California parolees is that they have no interaction with felons or gang members. Due to Hussle’s affiliation with the Rollin 60’s Crips, it is widely believed that Lathan may have violated his parole that way.

Lathan had served 20 years for murder before being released on parole.

“Gov. Gavin Newsom should order the immediate release of Kerry. His arrest sends a horrible message to parolees trying to integrate into society and for [corrections] officials to label Hussle, who was a Grammy-nominated artist entrepreneur, gentrification fighter and philanthropist, as a known gang member is a slap in the face to his family and our grieving community,” community activist Najee Ali told The Los Angeles Times on Friday.

On March 31, Hussle went to The Marathon Store to get some clothes for Lathan so that he would be fresh to see his family and friends for the first time in well over two decades. Then, tragedy struck.

Lathan, Hussle and another man were standing outside of The Marathon Clothing store when Eric Holder approached them. After a brief verbal confrontation between he and Hussle, the two shook hands and Holder left. He then later returned, opening fire, hitting Lathan in the back and shooting Hussle numerous times. Hussle died at an LA area hospital.

Holder was arrested on April 2 and has been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder in the killing.

A public memorial service was held Thursday for Hussle at the Staples Center followed by a long procession through the streets of Los Angeles, culminating in a large gathering on the newly minted Nipsey Hussle Square where The Marathon Clothing Store is located. “The Marathon Continues,” was an underlying theme throughout as the streets of South Central L.A. filled with well wishers, fans and more. He was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Hollywood Hills on Friday.

Authorities arrested the couple at Summerlin Hospital, where the toddler died around 7:30 p.m. She was brought in with bruises on her body, KSNV reported.

Wood and Taylor each posted $ 5,000 bail at Clark County Detention Center and were released, according to jail records. But the football player was rebooked Thursday on an additional first-degree murder charge. He’s currently being held on bail, police said.

Court Reinstates Murder Conviction For Former NFL Star Aaron Hernandez

(BOSTON) — Massachusetts’ highest court on Wednesday reinstated the late Aaron Hernandez’s murder conviction, which was erased after the former NFL star killed himself in prison.

The Supreme Judicial Court also scrapped the legal principle that wiped out Hernandez’s conviction for future cases, calling it “outdated and no longer consonant with the circumstances of contemporary life.”

Hernandez was convicted in 2015 of killing semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd. Two years later, the 27-year-old killed himself in his prison cell days after being acquitted of most charges in a separate double-murder case.

A judge threw out Hernandez’s conviction that year, citing the legal principle that holds that a defendant convicted at trial who dies before an appeal is heard should no longer be considered guilty in the eyes of the law, thereby returning the case to its pretrial status.

Under the doctrine, rooted in centuries of English law, a conviction should not be considered final until an appeal can determine whether mistakes were made that deprived the defendant of a fair trial, legal experts say.

Prosecutors have said the legal doctrine is outdated and unfair to victims. Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn II argued the defendant’s estate should be allowed to appeal the case, if they wish. Otherwise, the conviction should stand, he said.

“He goes through a full trial, a jury who speaks for the public convicts him and because he dies, in this case commits suicide, the whole thing is wiped out like it never happened? It’s not fair or just and should be changed,” Quinn told reporters after the November hearing.

Under the new rule laid out by the court, the conviction will stand but the court record will note the conviction was neither affirmed nor reversed because the defendant died while the appeal was pending.

Other high-profile Massachusetts criminals whose convictions have been erased after their deaths include John Salvi, who was convicted of killing two abortion clinic workers and wounding five other people during a shooting rampage in Brookline in 1994.

Roman Catholic priest John Geoghan, a key figure in the clergy sex abuse scandal that rocked the Boston archdiocese and spread across the globe, also had his child molestation conviction vacated after he was beaten to death in 2003 in his cell at the same Massachusetts maximum-security prison where Hernandez died.

Hernandez’s attorney had previously argued the legal doctrine should remain intact, saying juries make mistakes.

How other states handle cases such as Hernandez’s varies widely. Some states, like Massachusetts, toss the convictions, while others dismiss the defendant’s appeal and the conviction stands. Other states allow appellate courts to consider a dead defendant’s case, prosecutors say.

Plot Twist: Police Arrest Husband and Stepdaughter for the Murder of a Woman Initially Believed to Have Been Stabbed By a Panhandler

Police have charged a Baltimore woman’s husband and stepdaughter with her murder instead of the panhandler the two initially claimed stabbed her through a rolled-down car window.

via NYDN:

Keith Smith, 52, and daughter Valeria Smith, 28 were picked up in Texas on Saturday just as they were about to cross into Mexico, police told the Baltimore Sun.

Jacquelyn Smith’s family had never quite believed the husband’s account, the Baltimore Sun reported.

“I already know it’s Keith,” her brother, Marcel Trisvan, told the Sun. “All the questioning has been specific to Keith. That kind of sums it right there. It never made sense. I told [detectives] from the very beginning there are no suspects out there.”

He also said that two weeks earlier, Keith Smith had handed him the keys to the couple’s home, which Jacquelyn owned, saying he was moving to Florida. He took out all the appliances, her brother said.

People in the neighborhood where the killing took place also did not believe the account, according to reports. A neighbor who did not want their name released said the block is usually empty at the hour the crime allegedly took place, and that no one had seen a couple matching the husband’s description.

“Everybody in the neighborhood said something’s wrong with it,” the neighbor told the Sun of the so-called panhandling woman and her baby. “I don’t know what happened. Nobody around here knew her.”

The case had gripped the Baltimore area for its tragedy, and even caught the attention of media mogul Oprah Winfrey.

Jacquelyn Smith, 54, was driving home from a family birthday celebration with her husband, Keith Smith, 52, when she rolled down her window to give a woman money, the tearful husband and stepdaughter had told police. Keith Smith told police the woman was carrying a sign asking for help feeding her baby.

After Smith gave them money, a black man approached as if to thank her, but instead grabbed her wallet and necklace, and stabbed her, the husband told police at the time. Jacquelyn Smith was pronounced dead at Johns Hopkins Hospital about two hours later.

Police warned motorists and others to be careful when responding to such requests.

The incident gave the most generous benefactors pause. Media mogul Oprah Winfrey tweeted that the story “struck my heart,” and that, having given money “a 1k times,” she was going to “think twice before ever doing again.”

Keith Smith had provided a detailed description of the two to ABC News back in December, when the alleged attack happened. He said the woman was in her 20s, about 5 feet tall with “medium brown” skin. Her companion, he told the network, was black, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a goatee and clad in a black hoodie.

“Like everyone in our city, state and across this nation, we mourned the senseless killing of Jacquelyn Smith. To now learn that family members staged this brutal killing is beyond belief and represents a double tragedy,” Mayor Catherine Pugh said in a statement Sunday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

“They were responsible for taking Jacquelyn’s life with unconscionable cruelty and contrived to do so in our city under the guise of random violence, exploiting the legitimate fears of our residents.”

We definitely didn’t see that coming.

CNN’s Chris Cuomo to Rep. Matt Gaetz: You Use Murder Victims for Political Convenience

In an extremely contentious interview Thursday night, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) told CNN anchor Chris Cuomo he is “irresponsible” for directly saying the Florida lawmaker uses victims of illegal immigrant murders for political gain.

Earlier this week, Gaetz drew national headlines when he attempted to kick a Parkland massacre victim’s father out of a House Judiciary Committee hearing, claiming Manuel Oliver interrupted him multiple times. Gaetz argued during that hearing that a background-check bill wouldn’t prevent gun violence, but President Trump’s desired wall at the U.S.-Mexico border would.

“If we cared about safer streets, we’d build the wall and secure the border,” the Republican congressman declared.

Five Saudi Students Accused of Rape, Murder, Hit and Runs, Have Fled Oregon Before Trial

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Department

New legislation introduced by Oregon senators aims to punish Saudi Arabia following shocking allegations that the kingdom has whisked as many as five young men facing criminal charges ranging from rape to murder out of the country from that state alone.

Speaking publicly for the first time on Thursday, the parents of Fallon Smart, a 15-year-old victim of a hit and run by Saudi student Abdulrahman Sameer Noorah in 2016, said they were horrified to learn their daughter’s alleged assailant had disappeared two weeks before his trial with the help of the Saudi government. Noorah was charged with manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, and reckless driving in the teen’s death. He faced a minimum prison sentence of ten years.

Federal investigators confirmed to the Oregonian/Oregon Live that a private lawyer hired by the Saudi consulate posted $ 100,000 of a $ 1 million bail for the 21-year-old and apparently arranged for a dark SUV to pick him up shortly after he left jail. His severed electronic bracelet was found at a nearby gravel yard. Authorities believe he was given a forged passport, since his was sequestered by Oregon authorities, and flown back to Saudi Arabia on a private jet. He was seen back in his home country a week after he disappeared.

Jason Van Dyke Found Guilty Of Murder In Shooting Death Of LaQuan McDonald

Source: ANTONIO PEREZ / Getty

Somewhat surprisingly, former Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke was found guilty for the death  LaQuan McDonald. The fact many people are shocked a cop was taken to task is a testament to the state of the justice system.

Van Dyke, who is white, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of the Black 17-year-old in 2014.

Reports CNN:

Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke was found guilty Friday of second-degree murder in the 2014 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

Van Dyke, who was also found guilty of 16 counts of aggravated battery, sat impassively in a dark suit — his shoulders slumped — as the verdicts were read in the high-profile case. At one point, he sipped water from a bottle. He was found not guilty of official misconduct.
The officer’s wife sat stoically, arms folded, as the long verdict was delivered. His father lowered his head while some members of the McDonald family held hands.
Van Dyke’s bond was revoked and sentencing was scheduled for October 31. He was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs.

Van Dyke is reportedly the first Chicago police officer to be even charged with first-degree murder since 1980. Think about that.

The convicted murderer faces a minimum of 6 years in prison when he is sentenced.

Good riddance.
