Cardinals Sign Top Pick Murray To Four-Year Deal

(AP Photo)

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have signed Kyler Murray in time for their rookie minicamp.

Arizona signed the No. 1 overall draft pick to a four-year contract Thursday worth about $ 35 million with a team option for a fifth. It includes a signing bonus of more than $ 23 million.

The Cardinals also signed five other draft picks tor four-year contracts: cornerback Byron Murphy, defensive lineman Zach Allen, receiver KeeSean Johnson, offensive lineman Josh Miles and tighter end Caleb Wilson.

Murray and the rest of the draft picks will take the field for the first time Friday, when the Cardinals open a rookie minicamp.

Arizona moved up to No. 10 overall in last year’s NFL draft to select Josh Rosen, who had an up-and-down rookie season under first-year coach Steve Wilks.

The Cardinals fired Wilks and replaced him with Kliff Kingsbury, expecting the former Texas Tech coach to replicate some of the offensive successes he had in Lubbock.

The Red Raiders were among the nation’s highest-scoring teams under Kingsbury and he had two quarterbacks, Case Keenum and Patrick Mahomes, who led the nation in passing.

Instead of addressing other needs, the Cardinals used the No. 1 overall pick to take Murray, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Oklahoma they believe to be a perfect fit for Kingsbury’s “Air Raid” offense..

Murray will likely be the starter for the 2019 season opener after Rosen was traded to Miami for the 62nd overall pick — used on Massachusetts receiver Andy Isabella — and a 2020 fifth-rounder.

Murray made the most of his one season as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback, accounting for more than 5,300 yards and 53 touchdowns after backing up Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield in 2017.

An outfielder, he also became the first person to be selected in the first round of the NFL and major league baseball drafts.

The Oakland Athletics used the ninth overall pick of the 2018 MLB draft on Murray and agreed to a minor league contract with a $ 4.66 million signing bonus. The A’s had Murray’s jersey hanging in a locker at their spring training facility in Phoenix, but the two-sport star announced in February he would concentrate on football.

That left the Cardinals with a decision with the No. 1 pick and they opted to use it on Murray, who beat teams with his arm and legs in college.

Kyler Murray, a Black Man, Was the Number One NFL Draft Pick. Trump Congratulated the Number Two Pick Instead

Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray was the first overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday, but on Saturday morning, President Donald Trump decided to congratulate the number two pick instead.

Former University of Oklahoma quarterback Murray, who is black, was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals and reportedly offered a $ 35 million contact. He’s also an accomplished baseball player, and was ninth in the 2018 MLB draft.

However, on Twitter the President congratulated Nick Bosa, the second pick, who was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers.

“Congratulations to Nick Bosa on being picked number two in the NFL Draft,” Trump tweeted. “You will be a great player for years to come, maybe one of the best. Big Talent! San Francisco will embrace you but most importantly, always stay true to yourself. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Bosa, who is white, has been criticized for releasing a number of tweets some have seen as racially charged. The tweets, which have since been deleted, describe Black Panther as the “worst Marvel movie”; describe Beyonce’s music as “trash,” and call former 49ers player Colin Kaepernick a “clown.” He was also criticized for “liking” many Instagram posts with racist and homophobic slurs.

Bosa has also previously expressed his support for Trump, tweeting that Reagan and Trump were “Goats,” meaning the “greatest of all time.”

After being drafted, Bosa apologized for his social media posts, telling reporters, “I’m sorry if I hurt anybody. I definitely didn’t intend for that to be the case. I think me being here (San Francisco) is even better for me as a person, because I don’t think there’s anywhere, any city, that you could really be in that would help you grow as much as this one will,” according to

Murray has also come under fire for writing prejudiced tweets. After the player won the Heisman Trophy, several tweets from 2012 emerged in which he used homophobic slurs. He apologized, writing, “I apologize for the tweets that have come to light tonight from when I was 14 and 15. I used a poor choice of word that doesn’t reflect who I am or what I believe. I did not intend to single out any individual or group.”

Many football fans and Twitter users called out the President for praising Bosa over Murray.

“You do realize that another player went #1 overall in the draft, right ahead of Bosa, right?” tweeted user Ed Krassenstein.

A user with the handle @rocodeedee tweeted at Trump, “FYI: The first pick in the NFL draft, Kyler Murray, is the only player drafted in the first round of two major sports (MLB). I think that deserves a congratulatory message, but we all know why he won’t get it from you!”

Some users argued that Trump’s tweet was an indication of racism. User @ALiberalCatLady tweeted, “Congratulating the first white draft pick, and nothing to say about the first pick overall.

Game of Thrones star Hannah Murray admits playing anorexic teen on Skins was ‘one of the happiest times of her life’

GAME Of Thrones’ Hannah Murray has admitted that playing anorexic teen Cassie Ainsworth on E4 drama Skins remains one of her happiest work memories – despite finding international super-stardom in the HBO fantasy series.

The 29-year-old actress appeared on Lorraine earlier today, where she admitted that her 2007-2008 castmates are like her “siblings”.

Speaking about the popular show, Hannah said: “Some of the happiest times of my life, I fell in love with acting so hard and fast when I first started working on Skins.

“Then those people that I worked with on the show are like my best friends, they are almost like my siblings really, we are that close.

“I see them all the time, they’re such an important part of my life – that thread from that first job is still very, very consistent.”

The star took a break from acting to further her studies after finding fame in Skins, landing the recurring role of wildling Gilly in the second series of Game of Thrones in 2012.

Together with Samwell Tarly, Gilly played a key role in discovering the truth about Jon Snow’s legitimate parentage – and is one of the few characters to have survived to see in the final series of the show.

Speaking to Christine Lampard on the ITV breakfast show, Hannah revealed that she struggles to keep the top secret content of the show under wraps – and even spoiled the show for one of her friends at his birthday party.

She explained: “I always want to tell everyone, I once ruined a big spoiler for my friend at his birthday party – I just decided to tell him everything.

Joe plays Gendry in Game of Thrones – but he and Hannah are yet to share a scene together

“I am always worried I am going to get in trouble, so I am relieved the show is coming out so I can finally talk about it with everyone.”

The much-anticipated final series of Game of Thrones hit our screens in the early hours of Monday morning, with Hannah’s fellow Skins’ alumni, Joe Dempsie, also reprising his role of Gendry for the season.

Hannah previously confessed that she has always hoped Gilly and Gendry’s storylines will cross so that she can be reunited with her close pal on set.

As of yet, the two characters haven’t met in Westeros – and with just five episodes left of the hit series, the odds of an on-screen Skins reunion aren’t looking too likely.

‘The Pain Is Too Much.’ Andy Murray Says Australian Open Could Be His Last Tournament

(MELBOURNE, Australia) — A tearful Andy Murray says the Australian Open could be his last tournament because of a hip injury that has hampered him for almost two years.

The three-time Grand Slam champion says he plans to start his opening match against No. 22-ranked Roberto Bautista Agut at the Australian Open, where he has reached the final five times but never won the title.

“I’m going to play (in Australia) — I can still play to the level,” Murray said. “Not a level I’m happy playing at — but also, it’s not just that. The pain is too much really.”

Murray had right hip surgery in January 2018 and, after two brief attempts to return to the tour, played only 12 matches in the year.

He returned at the Brisbane International last week, where he won his opening match but lost in the second round to Daniil Medvedev, showing visible signs of limping between points.

The 31-year-old Murray, who ended long Grand Slam droughts for British men and also won the Olympic gold medal, had hoped to play the first half of 2019 and make a run at Wimbledon.

“That’s where I’d like to stop playing … but I’m also not certain I’m able to do that,” Murray said. “I don’t want to continue playing that way. I’ve tried everything I could to get it right and that hasn’t worked.”

Murray held a news conference Friday at Melbourne Park, and had to leave the room for a while soon after it started to compose himself as he fronted the media.

He said he’s considering another hip operation, more to improve his quality of life than as a way to return to the top level in tennis.

The Australian Open starts Monday.
