Sisters Honor Stepfather By Taking His Name [WATCH]

Like many fathers, Marvin Bowers was likely expecting a low-key Father’s Day. Maybe dinner, maybe some socks or ties. But this year, he had one of the best Father’s Day ever and his response to it went viral.

Via Buzzfeed:

Bowers is both a father to 11-year-old Maya and stepfather to 22-year-old Jia and 19-year-old Jazel. This year, the older girls decided to surprise the man they consider a father with the ultimate gift – they decided to legally take his name.

Though Twitter is known to be cynical and bitter as well as full of trolls, this hit most as an example of joy and love in a cruel world. And they tweeted their appreciation, making this Father’s Day moment viral.

Safe to say that while Father’s Day 2019 is in the history books, the Bowers family will remember this day forever. Congrats to all!

Summer Entertainment: Let’s Name Favorite Books, Magazines, Podcasts, Bingewatch TV, and More

woman holding a kindle by the pool

As everyone starts to get rolling on summer travel plans, I thought now might be a great time to talk about favorite entertainment items. In the past, we’ve had threads on brain candy books, favorite magazines, and podcasts for working women, but let’s just combine them all today and ask everyone to fill out the following with ONE suggestion each for your fellow Corporette readers. What do you heartily recommend for entertainment? For purposes of this mini-survey let’s assume people will NOT have good WiFi access, as you do while sitting at the beach, so will want to download things ahead of time.

Fiction Book (please note genre):

Nonfiction book:

Audiobook:

Magazine:

Podcast (general):

Podcast (storytelling, like Serial):

TV Series to Binge:

Movie:

Mobile Game:

My own answers are below (all links to Amazon are affiliate links; thank you for your support)…

Fiction Book (please note genre): The last really fun book I read was The Royal Runaway (rom com); I still stand by my earlier brain candy recommendations.

Nonfiction book: Not terribly new, but I was fascinated by NeuroTribes.

Audiobook: Fire & Fury (political); #GirlBoss was also great on audiobook. I’m listening to White Noise now, and while I enjoy it as a “reread,” I’m not sure I’d recommend it on audiobook for your first “read.” (I’m new to the genre of audiobooks but find I need to take a break from all of my political podcasts at the moment!)

Magazine: Vanity Fair is my go-to airport reading.

Podcast (general): A friend just turned me on to Throughline, from NPR — in each episode they look at the history of a modern problem to better view it in context (so for opioids they looked at the history of morphine and heroin).

Podcast (storytelling, like Serial): I enjoyed Bag Man (Rachel Maddow).

TV Series to Binge: Santa Clarita Diet (Netflix)

Movie: (pass, haven’t seen anything non-kid related in too long, unless this counts: Iliza: Elder Millennial)

Mobile Game: (pass, curious for recommendations!)

Two Other Random Recommendations for Beach Reading

In addition to the favorite apps we recommended a few weeks ago, including Overcast for podcasts, I’ll give a shoutout to two other techy things:

  • a Kindle is great for the beach, and you can usually even get library books sent to it — I love mine but it’s super old (circa 2016), has a cracked screen, and has been dropped numerous times in the water. (Whoops.) It’s still holding up great but it might be time to get a new one, so I’m eyeing this one — what are everyone’s thoughts?
  • I just got this mobile charger and love it — if you forever find yourself texting your travel companions your phone’s battery percentage (“FYI I’m at 1%! See you at the hotel at 6 p.m.!”) then just get a mobile charger and be done with it. This one works as advertised — I got this teensy cord to connect my phone to the charger without a lot of excess.

How the Asian-American Band the Slants Fought for Their Name

Anthony Pidgeon/Redferns/Getty

Simon Tam decided to name his Asian-American dance rock band The Slants, as a “badass reference to our own perspective, or slant on life, as well as our journey to unpack these false stereotypes as people of color.”

Then, when another band with the same name started booking gigs, The Slants’ lawyer suggested registering their name as a trademark. This would help avoid consumer confusion, and also protect The Slants’ name, logo, and other branded properties. Sounded simple enough—file some papers, pay some fees, and voila, The Slants name was protected by law.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office, which handles cases like this, wasn’t onboard. They referred to Section 2(a) of the Lanham Act, t a 1946 law which is the country’s primary trademark statute. The USPTO used the law’s disparagement provision to claim that the band’s name was insulting to Asian-Americans and refused their trademark request.

Respeck On Her Name: Black Woman Lawyer Blasts Media Over Solely Giving Kim Kardashian Credit For Freeing 17 Inmates

Kim Kardashian West out and about in Paris

Source: WENN.com / WENN

The lawyer who Kim Kardashian worked alongside to spearhead the release of 17 prisoners is speaking out and asking for the media to give credit where it’s due.

For the last year, Kim Kardashian has received increasing attention for her role in criminal justice reform, but Houston based attorney Brittany K. Barnett of the Buried Alive Project, made sure to make it clear that she’s been advocating for this work for years, along with her partner MiAngel Cody.

Barnett posted a lengthy Facebook message on Tuesday after 17 men were released from life in federal prison over drug charges.

“The first and last time I will speak on it. Seriously, because the negativity from today is misdemeanor s*** and we still have lives to save. MiAngel Cody and I have BEEN doing this work for FREE,” she wrote.

“Ask any of our dozens of clients who are now free living their best lives. Both of us left six figure salary jobs and wiped out our own savings accounts to fund our work. We attempted to get grants from these large foundations shelling out MILLIONS of dollars to other organizations but would not look our way because they so-called don’t fund “direct services”. Our hands were full picking locks to human cages, we didn’t have time to participate in glorified begging from the nonprofit industrial complex only to be turned down.

But Barnett made it clear that she does not blame Kim for the media coverage, being that her name is destined to cause attention.

She also stated that Kim stepped in as a financial contributor after her and her partner were refused by different foundations.

“Kim has always been very clear in her role. It’s the media that spins it around – not Kim. We do not care how the media is portraying it – that’s what the media does. Who cares,” Barnett wrote. “We need Kim’s support and the support of anyone else who wants to join this fight. We love that she is using her platform to raise awareness. We ain’t trying to be famous, we trying to get our people free. Period.”

name a planet

Being allowed to officially name a planetary body is a privilege that few are ever granted. Typically, new planets, moons, and other large objects found in space are named by the person or group that discovered them, but many of them are never formally named at all, sitting with their scientifically-designated label for years.

The minor planet 2007 OR10 is one such world and, although it was originally discovered in July 2007, it never received an official name. Now its discoverers want suggestions on what its name should be, and you can help.

We’ve all been pronouncing Khaleesi’s name wrong this whole time

Wait, WHAT?

Game of Thrones season eight is on its way – and we officially can’t wait.

Our past few months have been dominated by Game of Thrones news and updates, from the emergence of the teaser trailer to theories about what’s to come in Westeros.

But it wasn’t Sophie Turner confessing to being banned from washing her hair during filming and Kit Harrington taking one of his props as a momento or Maisie William talking about her final scene that had the world talking today.

Instead, it was Emilia Clarke’s character, Daenerys Targaryen herself, who made news as it turned out we’ve all been pronouncing her title, Khaleesi, wrong all along.

Yes, really. But don’t worry – we’re not alone – the characters in the series have been saying it wrong too.

Game of Thrones seaso 7

According to David Peterson, the linguist behind Game of Thrones languages, the mispronunciation of Daenerys’ title had come to be ‘a real thorn in his side’, blaming himself for why it was pronounced incorrectly.

According to Digital Spy, the linguist opened up on how he built languages from George RR Martin’s works during his appearance on the podcast, The Allusionist, and he couldn’t help but voice his regrets.

‘I wanted to make sure if something was spelled differently, it was pronounced differently,’ the linguist explained. ‘That worked pretty well for everything except the word “Khaleesi”, which is just a real thorn in my side.’

He continued: ‘There’s no way it should be pronounced “ka-LEE-see” based on the spelling. So I had to decide, am I going to re-spell this thing because I know how people are going to pronounce this, or am I going to honour that spelling and pronounce it differently? I made the latter decision and I think it was the wrong decision.

goodbye game of thrones

Game of Thrones

‘Changing the spelling to “Khalisi” would have fixed all my problems,’ he went on to admit. ’“EE” and “I” can’t be pronounced the same because they’re spelled differently. If I want to honour George RR Martin’s spellings, that would give us the pronunciation CHA-LAY-eh-see.’

Well, our minds are officially blown, but hopefully we’ll have got over it by the first episode of Game of Thrones season 8!

The Change in IHOP’s Name Actually Led to Record Burger Sales

Remember when the internet was trolling IHOP for changing it’s name to IHOB? Well it seems that the restaurant chain’s attempt to shed some light on its burger menu has paid off.

It has just been revealed by the Chief Marketing Officer of IHOP that the viral piece of marketing generated 1.2 million Tweets the first 10 days, amounting to roughly half-a-million burgers sold each week during its peak. The marketing push was an effort to increase the number of customers, and to announce a new line of burgers. With traffic on the decline for the last 10 quarters, this was exactly what the pancake house needed to bring new customers in during lunchtime. It seems some locations were able to grow as much as 1.2 percent during third quarter of last year.

In other food news, blueberry cheese burgers are trending in Japan.

“It’s My Name” Rihanna’s Father Responds To Lawsuit Against Him

Wildfox And Ladygunn Magazine Presents Wayke Up Fundraiser Hosted By Nikki Reed

Source: Jason LaVeris / Getty

Earlier this week, we reported that Rihanna was suing her father, Ronald Fenty for capitalizing off her family name. Apparently, Mr. Fenty opened up an entire company—Fenty Entertainment and was attempting to book gigs for her to perform.

Since then, Ronald Fenty has learned of the lawsuit and responded to it. In an interview with OK! Mr. Fenty said:

“She is? Suing me? Why would she sue me? It’s my name! She’s never going to sue me- I’ll have to fight it! Thing is she doesn’t have the time to deal with all this stuff herself, so it is someone else that will be doing it. She’s working hard on her album at the moment. I don’t think she’d sue me.”

He continued, “This is all news to me. They sent something to Fenty Entertainment, it was a letter from Roc Nation I think, but my lawyer said it was OK. They said they preferred me not to use the name, but they didn’t say I couldn’t.”

As we reported earlier, Rihanna is suing Mr. Fenty because Mr. Fenty launched a company and have been acting as agents on Rihanna’s behalf, including booking gigs across the nation and even in other countries. Mr. Fenty said that he ran the bookings past Roc Nation and claims they knew what he was doing.

In addition to work with this daughter Fenty was also attempting to trademark the name for a line of boutique hotels. But the application was rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Rihanna’s lawsuit claimed that she had sent several cease and desist letters to her father. But he’s ignored them.

How to Change Your Name At Work

How to Change Your Name At Work

Ladies, what are your thoughts on how to change your name at work? If you changed your last name when you got married — or switched to a new name for any other reason, such as divorce — how did you let coworkers and other colleagues know? What did you do about your social media profiles? (And, if you already had a professional identity and then took your partner’s name, do you keep your maiden name on LinkedIn and Facebook even if you don’t use it?) Over at CorporetteMoms today, we’re sharing multiple stories regarding deciding on baby’s last name, so we thought it was a good opportunity to share some tips on how to change your name at work.

First, here are a couple of quick stats from several we shared in the CorporetteMoms post: Only 6% of U.S.-born, married women have “nonconventional surnames” — meaning they kept their name, hyphenated, or use two names, but about 20% of recently-married women have kept their surnames. In the post, you’ll also be able to read some thoughts from the CorporetteMoms writers (Kat, Kate & April), as well as one of Kat’s BFFs who really wanted her kids to have her last name.

Psst: Here on the blog, we’ve talked about hyphenated names and email addressesgetting called the wrong name at work (and being assumed to be a certain gender because of your gender-neutral name), choosing whether to change your name when you get married, post-divorce name changes, using last names at work, and how to get rid of an old nickname

Here are some tips on how to change your name at work:

1. Send a brief mass email to coworkers and other professional contacts to tell them your new name and new email address. Make sure you’re sending it from your new address (or at least that your new address is the reply-to). Note whether your old email address will forward to your new one. If the forwarding will continue indefinitely, and you make the recipients aware of that, they may never feel obligated to change your details in their contacts and may just keep using your old email (and maybe, name) forever — so perhaps it’s best to be vague… Note: Before you get married, ask your IT department how much notice you’ll need to give to get a new email address and set up forwarding.

2. Change your email signature. Everyone should be familiar with the format “Firstname (Oldlastname) Newlastname,” at least for marriage name changes, and you should keep your signature looking like that for at least

3. Change your outgoing voice mail message and the recorded name you made for the phone directory. Check that your name is updated in any internal listings, too, such as as the company intranet.

4. Get a new business card and door/cubicle nameplate. Depending on the size of your company, it may take a while to get these changes made, so again, make sure to find out ahead of time how much lead time they need.

5. Update your LinkedIn profile and other social media accounts. For example, when you click to edit your LinkedIn profile, for example, you can click on “Add former name.” If you add your original last name, your profile will now read “Firstname (Oldlastname) Newlastname.” You can choose to have your name appear this way to (1) your connections, (2) your network (people up to three degrees away from you), or (3) all LinkedIn members. You should also change the URL for your LinkedIn profile.

6. Notify professional organizations and licensing boards. Tell other groups you belong to, as well, such as nonprofit boards, local committees, networking groups, alumni associations, and so on.

Don’t forget to fill out a new W4, etc., and make sure HR makes all the necessary changes on their end, too!

If you’ve changed your name because of marriage or any other reason, how did you tell colleagues? If you changed your name when you got married but worried about losing the professional reputation and identity you’d built with your old name, have you continued to use it in work-related settings?
