Saudi prosecutor indicts women’s rights activists held for nearly a year without charge

It is not clear whether Saudi Arabia intends to vigorously pursue legal charges or release the activists under the cover of a judicial process — and, by doing so, dispense with what has become a public relations problem for Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Bob Einstein Told a Joke So Funny on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ It Nearly Left Jerry Seinfeld in Tears

Photo illustration by The Daily Beast

The scene comes late in Curb Your Enthusiasm’s seventh season. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld are getting the band back together for a Seinfeld reunion and on the day of their first big table read, Larry’s friend Marty Funkhouser shows up on set, an enormous plate of free food in one hand, and insists on telling Jerry a joke.

As played by comedian Bob Einstein, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 76, Funkhouser is an amateur comic with no sense of propriety. “He doesn’t want to hear a joke, we have a read-through,” a frustrated Larry tells him, trying to protect his longtime collaborator. But Funkhouser pays him no mind.

For the next 60 seconds straight, Einstein delivers a joke so dirty that we won’t bother transcribing it here—though you can watch it in its entirely below. When he finally gets to the punchline, Jerry laughs so hard he doubles over. “It surprised me,” he says after he recovers. “I had no idea it would be that revolting.” As Einstein walks away, Jerry adds, “I like that guy.”

Black Barber Makes Nearly Half a Million Creating ‘Man Weaves’

Vice is reporting that a black barber based out of Maryland, is making a lucrative business creating hair weaves for men. Thirty-five-year-old barber Wade Menendez glues natural and synthetic hair to balding men’s scalps and then styles them into their remaining hair. From Vice News:

Menendez began installing hair over four years ago through the help of another stylist. Since then, his barber shop in Glen Burnie, Maryland, The W Hair Loft, has become a haven for balding black men looking for scalp rejuvenation.

Menendez also does more than just work with clients; he hosts a regular class where he’s instructed over 500 hair professionals how to do what he does. The most recent class, in October, drew stylists and barbers from as far away as London.

Hair weaves and extensions, traditionally donned by women, are a big business, especially with black consumers. Market research company Mintel reports that “Nearly six out of 10 black consumers wear a wig, weave or extensions, which enables them to switch up their look.” African Americans spend an estimated $ 2.54 billion on black haircare in the beauty supply business.

hair weaves for men

(thewhairloft.com)

Yet, much of the money spent on hair weaves does not go back into the black community. “When you walk into a beauty supply store in an urban neighborhood or a suburban strip mall most likely you will see a Korean owner,” said hairstylist Alonzo Arnold in an interview with Black Enterprise. Arnold, in addition to being a stylist, is an entrepreneur who creates custom wigs and weaves. He is also one of many black people in the beauty industry calling for more black ownership and economic empowerment.

Lia Dias is another voice. She is the owner of The Girl Cave in Los Angeles, a one-stop shop for all the things hair and clothing. In a market traditionally dominated by Korean ownership, Dias wants to empower black women to be suppliers and distributors as black women make up the largest consumers group in the industry.

Also, men are increasingly becoming consumers of beauty products that were always targeted at women. Black-owned products targeted to men of color including products from Bevel and Scotch Porter are strong men’s grooming sellers. In-Cosmetics reports that millennial-aged men are driving the current “men’s beauty” trend with younger men wearing cosmetics.

She Ditched Her Debt Collectors — and Raised Her Credit Score Nearly 200 Points

Tabatha Pankop spends long days on her feet. She waits tables, sometimes working double shifts for 15 hours at a time. Like most hardworking Americans, she has dreams of financial stability and homeownership.

There was just one problem.

“I just never thought having a low credit score would really impact your everyday life,” the 31-year-old Tampa server says.

Some old, and apparently unpaid, bills had hurt her credit. They included an old cell phone bill and an old power bill, among others.

“I guess a deposit or some type of rent that I thought I paid off, but I didn’t,” she says.

With her credit score dropping into the low 500s, she and her boyfriend were living in an older apartment, because that’s all her credit would allow. Pankop dreamed of buying her own townhouse, but that looked out of reach.

The aggressive phone calls from debt collectors didn’t help, either.

“Debt collectors — ah, man, they just literally harass you,” Pankop says. “They will say things that are inappropriate, and sometimes they can make you cry because they will say things that are very rude.”

That’s when a co-worker told her about Collection Shield 360, a credit repair service that helps people clean up their credit reports and deal with collection agencies.

Quick Results: ‘My Credit Skyrocketed.’

She decided to give it a shot and signed up. She quickly saw a dramatic difference in her credit score.

“Within a few weeks — maybe three months at the most — my credit skyrocketed,” she says. “Before I started with Collection Shield, I was at [about] 520, 530. Now I’m almost at 700. It’s just amazing.”

Collection Shield 360 offers two membership options:

  • Basic membership provides free credit-repair services with no cost to sign up.
  • Premium membership provides faster results and includes automatic monthly updates of your TransUnion credit score and collection accounts. You can sign up for premium for $ 1 for a two-month trial; then it’s $ 9.48 a month.

Here’s what it does:

  • Contacts your debt collectors to have negative marks on your credit report removed.
  • Provides you with credit bureau dispute letters that can help scrub your credit report.
  • Connects you with consumer attorneys who provide free legal services to help you remove negative items from your credit reports.

In Pankop’s case, it helped her deal with lingering bills from T-Mobile, Bright House Networks and Verizon.

Now, Pankop has just signed a lease on a new apartment she never imagined she could get into. Next, she’ll start looking for a nice little townhouse to buy.

Then she’ll go to nursing school.

“With having great credit, I’m able to get student loans with a lower interest rate,” she says. “I plan on getting my RN within the next few years.”

For her, it’s like a breath of fresh air.

“This has put me in a position where I’m becoming an adult, instead of that young girl figuring out her life.”

Mike Brassfield (mike@thepennyhoarder.com) is a senior writer at The Penny Hoarder. He knows what it’s like to get calls from debt collectors.

A Smelly Fruit Nearly Grounded a Flight After Passengers Fought for Its Removal

Durian is considered by many to be the smelliest fruit in the world. And when it was loaded into a plane’s cargo hold in Indonesia recently, its smell was enough to make passengers fight back.

Two tons of durian fruit was placed inside the hold of a Sriwijaya Air flight from Bengkulu to Jakarta. The smell was so bad that passengers demanded that the fruit be removed. After facing some backlash from air crews, the passengers nearly got into physical altercations to have it removed from the hold, according to the BBC, which earlier reported on the row.

Durian has 30 species and more than 100 varieties in Indonesia, alone. It’s thorn-covered and can grow as long as 12 inches. While some people can detect something sweet in the fruit’s odor, others believe it smells similar to raw sewage.

Airlines often carry products in their cargo hold to increase flight profitability. In most cases, airlines can transport products without informing their customers what’s in the hold and customers don’t typically have any say in what the flight will carry.

According to accounts from passengers, they could immediately smell durian when they got onto the flight and soon started requesting its removal from the cargo hold. Passengers chanted, saying they wouldn’t fly with durian in the cargo hold.

Their protests worked: the passengers were asked to get off the plane while the durian was removed from the hold. The plane eventually took off an hour after its scheduled departure time without any durian inside.
