Deco By Design: meet artrepublic’s newest abstract artist, Cleo Barbour

Former fashion designer Cleo Barbour creates intricate prints that combine mechanical and human processes with Art Deco stylings. As her work goes on display as part of our Abstract showcase at our Brighton gallery, she shares some insights into her work and motivations.

Triangle by Cleo Barbour

artrepublic (AR): Abstraction, by definition is dealing with ideas rather than events. What kind of ideas do you find yourself dealing with in your work?

CB: My work is lighthearted and designed to give pleasure through beauty and detail. It incorporates a set of signature visual principles that are combined to bring aesthetic pleasure. Through the combination of well-considered shapes and colour palettes I aim to achieve a satisfying feeling of simplicity.

I apply hand-embellished details to my work, which brings further depth and encourages the viewer to engage and consider the process of creation. This detailing also gives the work a sense of being human made – an intentional ‘backlash’ to our existence in a world that is heavily influenced by mass production and lacking in authenticity.

AR: Abstraction is also a state of preoccupation. In general, what do you find preoccupies you?

CB: I am often preoccupied by society’s obsessive relationship with material things and how overconsumption and our throwaway culture is affecting the earth, and causing humans unhappiness. These ideas stem from having worked in the fast-moving fashion world for a decade, with it’s superficial inclinations. Since moving away from this industry I find myself wondering what we can individually do to make these issues better and change mindsets.

Nowadays these ideas drive me to consider what I am putting into the world and how it can hold its value. I strive to create authentic and high-quality artwork that is accessible and collectible. I hope and wish that it is treasured and passed down through generations to bring happiness to as many people as possible.

AR: Historically, abstract art was as much about process and materials as it was the outcome. Can you talk us through your usual making process, and the materials you feel an affinity with?

CB: My hand-embellished geometric series takes inspiration from Art Deco patterns and motifs. I design the artworks digitally, experimenting with shapes and colour combinations before the printing process begins. The works are giclée printed first and then treated with various screen-printed glazes to achieve different textures and finishes. I then carefully hand-stitch golden thread to certain parts of the prints.

Hand-embellishing my artworks has provided me with a way of combining my love of embroidery with my signature graphic style. I spent a considerable amount of time honing my technique so that I can flawlessly apply threads onto the delicate paper; the gold stitching adds a special element to the sections of the artwork, creating eye-catching reflections alongside the various glossy and matte textures of the screen prints.

AR: If you could collaborate on a project with anyone – artist/ non-artist, dead or alive – who would it be and why?

CB: My dream collaboration isn’t with another artist – I’d love to be given a large wall space within an iconic Art Deco building and asked to create contemporary artwork to suit the space and reflect its history. The challenge would be to find the balance between the traditional detailing of the building and the modern style of my art.

AR: Consider the Cubists as an early-20th century art collective, pushing each other’s work forward. Who’s in your art gang/ who is your sounding board?

CB: Being quite a new artist, I am still working on my gang. On a daily basis I try to channel a balance between my commercial approach (honed in my fashion days!) and a new, freer attitude that breaks down barriers and allows artistic exploration. These days I am careful who I take advice from, but would like to build up a well-considered gang.

Hueman Connection: introducing artrepublic’s newest artist

As North Californian graffiti artist and painter Hueman’s colourful figurative and abstract mash-ups arrive in artrepublic’s Brighton gallery – in the form of an exclusive print – we dig into her creative backstory.

Street art aficionados may be familiar with the work of Allison Torneros, who paints under the name Hueman. Even if you haven’t seen her massive, energetically colourful works in person, sprayed on walls in the US or Europe, you may have unwittingly witnessed her designs running around the basketball courts of the Rio Olympics – Hueman designed the US Women’s basketball team’s shoes with Nike – or on a custom-designed colourful X-Box collaboration with Microsoft.

Since graduating from UCLA in 2008 with a degree in Design and Media Arts, Hueman has been building a following – especially since taking her work from the studio to the streets, scaling up her paintings to bring art to urban environments and audiences. Working on a much bigger scale than she was used to gave the artist new energy. In an interview with Juxtapoz magazine, she said: ‘it was like a light switch turned on […] I was using my entire body to paint, I was talking to people, I was collaborating, I was in the sun. I felt alive again. I literally felt human. That’s where the name Hueman comes from.’

Hueman’s work is absolutely saturated with that sense of being alive. This is drawn from a perfect balance of the artist’s choice of bold bright colours, her subject matter and her image-making process. You might wonder how the artist achieves that fluid-looking finish? Starting with a freestyle series of paints splashes, drips and sprays – a la Jackson Pollock(?) – she builds her refined, highly stylised images, which draw on the theme of the human condition. As a a result, Hueman’s work is packed with motion. It’s dynamic.

And that is exactly the word we would use to describe the artist’s exclusive piece for artrepublic. A limited edition of 25, each individually hand-finished by Hueman, Silent Power does what its title promises. It makes you stand to attention in front of it, without needing to be told. The female figure at its centre is strong and confident – holding her ground and fixing her sideways gaze as energetic lines and textures swirl around her, creating movement and energy.

The longer you look at this print, the more structures, finishes and colours emerge – you begin to really appreciate the complexity of Hueman’s creative process. Imagine this scaled up on the side of a building – even at this size, it packs a punch. Looking downwards, offering out an extended arm towards you, the position of power of the woman at its heart is emphasised. There is nothing passive about this print. It’s filled with vibrant life.

Draw on Hueman’s experience of painting outdoors and bring one of her powerful pieces into your collection – it will make you, and your space, come to life.

Newest Austin Bomb Shows Killer Is Evolving, FBI’s Unabomber Veterans Say

Drew Anthony Smith/Getty

After three package bombs rattled Austin, Texas this month, police warned locals to be wary of strange boxes outside their homes. But the latest attack, a tripwire bomb that injured two people on Sunday, suggests the bomber is changing their tactics to stay ahead of law enforcement, two former investigators in the Unabomber case say.

“They understand that law enforcement has been telling people, ‘Look out on your front porch. If it doesn’t say UPS or Amazon or FedEx, call the police,’” former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt told The Daily Beast on Monday.

Van Zandt is credited with helping identify Ted Kaczynski as the Unabomber. From 1978 to 1995, Kaczynski mailed bombs (mostly to researchers and scholars) that killed three people and wounded 23 others.

DC has hired this female director of colour for their newest superhero film

‘Our dreams make us large.’

Since Patty Jenkins blasted through box office records with Wonder Woman and Greta Gerwig broke the Oscars’ eight year drought of female director nominees for Ladybird, women are making their mark on Hollywood and people are taking notice. Female directorial excellence isn’t a trend, it’s a fact and Selma director Ava DuVernay has proven time and time again that she’s up to the task – and now DC have announced she’ll be helming their latest superhero project.

Ava will be directing New Gods for Warner Bros and DC, based off of Jack Kirby’s beloved comic book series. She announced the news in a post on Instagram, which she captioned ‘Onward.’

👊🏾

A post shared by Ava DuVernay (@ava) on

She may have even dropped a major hint way back in December when she tweeted that her favourite superhero was Big Barda, one of the New Gods’ crew.

She also posted an image of the late Jack Kirby, captioned ‘“Our dreams make us large.” Thank you, #JackKirby.’

Recently, Ava has made history as the first female director of colour to be awarded a $ 100 million film budget – namely for her film A Wrinkle in Time, which is currently in theatres. While the film opened to lukewarm reviews, it dominated its opening weekend box office and is being praised for its diverse cast as well as its heartwarming portrayal of a multiracial family.

As far as budgets go, we’re expecting that New Gods will probably be in a similar vein. These superhero movies go hard.

The Golden Globe nominated director has a powerful admirer in her corner, namely Patty Jenkins who has walked a similar track before.

Patty tweeted Ava, ‘My son just said “I wish I had a time machine so that I could go back and see @WrinkleInTime again for the first time!” That’s how much we enjoyed the beauty of the message and feeling like he was being included in something that didn’t condescend. Thank you for that, @Ava.’

Ava responded, ‘Designed #WRINKLEINTIME especially for our young ones, Patty. So his response thrills me. Thanks for taking your sweet boy. Look forward to seeing you around the block soon, lady. xo’

Now, an Ava DuVernay and Patty Jenkins superhero team up movie is something we’d be here for.

Here’s hoping it ends with Oscars and Golden Globes galore.

YouTube Star Patricia Bright Shines On The Newest Cover Of Glamour UK

Long gone are the days when only one size, shade, and celebrity status was featured on the front of a magazine. And while we still have a long way to go in the discussion and fight for inclusivity, platforms like blogging, creative spaces, and even Youtube have allowed for people to be seen and heard.

Instagram Photo

For Glamour UK’s latest cover, Patricia Bright graces the cover in her full, melanin glory! Bright is a London-based, Nigerian Youtuber who currently boasts over 1 million followers and counting. She’s not, however, an average Youtuber or someone you may “expect” is pretty much a celebrity. Bright is literally that…bright! Her funny humor and silly nature make her relatable to countless people.

She’s organic with content and constantly shares the reality of being a mother, an influencer, a wife, and an entrepreneur. If anything, every single one of Patricia’s viewers (myself included), feel like part of her family. So Bright’s transcendence into the milli club was not only a big deal for women, but for brown women who oftentimes don’t see themselves tapping into those spheres of influence.

We often see the same aesthetic pushed for Black women, and while we celebrate them all, it’s imperative that the Jackie Ainas and the Patricia Bright’s of the world are included.

For the famed publication, Bright opened up on a variety of things in regards to her life that we can all take away from. And yes, she did not shy away from discussing the fact that she still is learning to grow confidence in herself and on the importance of representation.

On being comfortable with who she is:

“My reality might be a bit more squidgy, but I’m still comfortable with who I am and not being perfect. And if I want to change things, that’s great, too. Real beauty comes from who you are on the inside and as I’ve grown into myself, I’ve realized that beauty genuinely is in the eye of the beholder. There will be people who find you beautiful regardless of society’s beauty standards, so find that group. Find the people who love you.”

On the representation she looked for growing up:

“When I was growing up, there weren’t many Black celebrities in the UK. So, I looked to American women like Oprah and Tyra Banks. I didn’t know much about Naomi Campbell, but now I appreciate how great she is. I’ve seen her at events and she has this amazing grace. When she walks into the room, everyone looks up.”

Not to mention her amazing video where she dishes on 10 things you may not know about her:

We’re so excited to see someone who has worked so hard to get a cover! What an amazing node to #BlackGirlMagic but also the power of doing the work and watching the seeds grow.  Check out the full interview over on Glamour UK.
