The Games We’re Looking Forward to in the Next Few Months

Every now and then we look forward, to the tune of a few months, and try to discern the best of the bunch. This will naturally be an extra special edition of this staple. Not only are we getting into the typical holiday madness, but this seems to be an extra busy year, full of quality.

OK, it kind of feels like we say that every year, but 2018 marks the return of two franchises that are far from annual appearances: Red Dead and Fallout. Those, on top of the already released Monster Hunter World, Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War, make this a stellar year already.

And that’s before we even take into account the reliable regulars we’ll see soon. Even familiar faces like FIFA can put up a surprisingly thoughtful entry, raising the quality of the year as a whole. We’re yet to see how Call of Duty and Battlefield will fare, but we’ll definitely be playing to find out.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The biggest no-brainer in a list populated mostly with no-brainers. Red Dead Redemption 2 is actually Rockstar’s first game on this generation of hardware. That’s how long it’s been, and fans are all kinds of keen.

We’ve played a couple of hours, and walked away with some thoughts about the tiny, conversation-worthy moments the game is full of, as well as seeing how the new horse system works, and why maintaining your guns is a lot more important this time around.

Fallout 76

It almost feels as if the franchise itself has been locked underground for ages, about to step into the light again. This is hallowed ground though, because Fallout 76 is going back to the very first vault that opened on Reclamation Day.

As for the new features, though? It’s not exactly classic Fallout. This newer game is an online experience, in which everyone you encounter is a real player. You’ll be able to turn this off, but the game is designed with cooperation and PvP in mind.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

After a hiatus of a few years, the Assassin’s Creed franchise was back with a bang last year in Origins. Now, Odyssey is a game that very much follows suit. It’ll use the same combat system that doesn’t choreograph the whole fight for you. If you miss, it’ll let you miss.

That said, we’ve been looking at the skills present in Odyssey, and they look a lot more inventive and outside-the-box. You have Ghost Arrows that can go through walls, and certain shots that do +800% Hunter Damage.

We’re not sure what we can do with all that yet, but we’re keen to find out what interesting assassinations we can pull off.

Darksiders III

Consider the size of Darksiders III, there are some very big shoes to fill here. The action franchise follows various horsepeople of the apocalypse, making it as if each game features a different RPG class. Now that we’ve seen the tanky War, and the roguey Death, it’s on to Fury — a chain-wielding warrior capable of Devil May Cry-esque air combos.

You can check out what it’s like to fight the first boss in the above video, or in our preview. Here’s hoping there’s a similar variety in the gameplay, such as the Shadow of the Colossus moments from the last game.

Soulcalibur 6

Also known as “The Geralt one,” this fighting game is bringing in the star of such games as The Witcher and The Witcher 2, and believe it or not, The Witcher 3. The White Wolf will face off against series regulars like Kilik and Mitsurugi on cramped platforms where falling off is absolutely possible. All done with an epic voiceover to remind you how epicly epic your fights are.

We’ve previously written about how we’re not the biggest fan of the Critical Edge system the game brings in, but it shouldn’t affect serious play too much. It’s moreso an unnecessary nod to newer players that oversimplifies the Soulcalibur system. It sure looks purdy, but it’s not a great fit.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the Soulcalibur 6 fighting system will be fantastic. We can’t wait to engage in footsies and distance management with Kilik’s staff. Not to mention this one comes out a few months ahead of Dead or Alive 6.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

You knew it was coming, and it finally happened. Battle royale has made its way into both Call of Duty and Battlefield. Call of Duty will always be Call of Duty, and it’s not known as the most innovative FPS game. But Black Ops 4 does take place in our favourite setting: Not World War II.

Early impressions of the new Blackout mode (see: battle royale) have been positive, and it features several older CoD maps stitched into one expanse of high-pitched VOIP and teenage teabaggers. The subseries has come a long way from asking Mason what the numbers mean, but there are always some highly polished campaigns to experience here, and we’ll be doing just that.

Battlefield V

As the perfect segue, Battlefield V won’t feature a traditional campaign — instead, it’s continuing its popular war stories mode, exploring the lesser known tales of World War II. This shooter will focus on areas like Norway or Northern Africa, as opposed to retreading the D-Day landing and conflicts over Paris.

We should re-emphasise how bored we are of World War II, if only to give our next point more weight. When playing Battlefield V, we were completely sold. Hate the setting, but loved the game. It was a lot of fun, and it didn’t take long to realise it.

Building fortifications was somewhat akin to Enemy Territory. You can only build them in pre-approved spots, but the maps are much more open than Enemy Territory‘s ever were. That makes us pretty excited about what routes and lines of sight you can gain or obstruct when trying to get the advantage. There’ll be a lot to learn about any given capture point.

Artifact Valve card game Richard Garriot
Card combat takes place across three separate lanes in Artifact.

Artifact

Valve’s card game based on DOTA 2 is slated for late November, which doesn’t necessarily mean Artifact will actually come out then, but probably. The highly anticipated collectible card game is being designed by the original creator of Magic: The Gathering, Richard Garfield — lending some impressive weight to a project that’ll be entering an already crowded and competitive space.

While Magic remains the least random of all the major CCGs out there, Garfield has defended randomness in videogames and will be incorporating some Random Number Generation (RNG). Much less than the norm established by Hearthstone, mind you. But there’s an inherent randomness after each round, when creeps will spawn in two of the three lanes.

Its three-lane system is an extension of Legends‘ two-lane system, and fits the idea of being based on a MOBA quite well. We’re expecting good things, and hope the RNG is kept to a minimum to keep it competition-worthy.

Phoenix Point

There are a lot of X-COM-likes coming up. We’ve already had Phantom Doctrine to enjoy, and Phoenix Point together with Mutant Year Zero will well and truly scratch that itch. Phoenix Point involves Julian Gallop, designer of the original X-COM, and we were fortunate to catch up with them to talk about the game’s direction.

Thanks to the wonders of crowdfunding, it’s already wildly successful. There’ll be a more involved and strategic metagame on the world map, and you’ll be able to target specific body parts, Fallout style.

This one was pretty hard when we played it earlier this year. Player after player would try and fail the demo mission at the Game Developer’s Conference. They may have tweaked that by now, and expect difficulty settings — but either way, it’s going to be an incredible timesink.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Another game offering top-down, turn-based tactics, Mutant Year Zero is based on a European board game. Former Hitman developers have joined the project to really nail the stealth portions, and the result is very interesting.

Mutant Year Zero seamlessly switches between real-time stealth and turn-based combat. As soon as you’re “discovered,” the game transitions to turns. Anything you can do beforehand to give yourself an advantage is fair game, but it’ll be a stealth challenge — and you won’t want to get caught out in the wrong spot.

This one also has an interesting way of dealing with RNG. Die rolls still affect whether or not you’ll hit your enemy, but modifiers have drastic effects. The extreme degree of this means you’ll likely see a lot of 0% and 100% indicators. If the shot is 40-60%, you know it must be seriously close. Anything you can do to help yourself first, like destroying the target’s cover, can bump you back up to that 100%.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Oh don’t you worry, we didn’t forget. The series that dominates every fighting game tournament, numbers-wise, is getting its Switch version. We’ve had a play of this one too, and had a lot of fun with the Splatoon character.

You can expect a steady trickle of character and stage announcements until December. After which, every videogame bar and event will have Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the projector, because hey, give the people what they want.

Taraji P. Henson’s Romantic Hairstyle Is Perfect For Your Next Date

Taraji P. Henson arrived at the 70th Annual Emmy Awards looking super soft and sweet. The Empire star presented an award for the evening and showed up looking like one herself!

She wore a floral embroidered high low Giambattista Valli gown and was styled by Jason Bolden. While her dress was definitely a conversation piece, we loved the soft simplicity of her hair!

Her hair was styled by none other than celebrity hairstylist Tym Wallace who achieved a romantic look, perfect for the actress. He told Hello Beautiful, “My inspiration came from a whimsical fairytale, which had a lot to do with the dress.” We have all the details on how to achieve this graceful hairstyle.

Wallace started by prepping the hair with Suave Professionals Almond Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampoo ($ 3.94, Target.com) and matching conditioner ($ 2.99, Target.com). He explained, “this moisturizing wash and care system leaves the hair feeling nourished and with a wonderful long-lasting scent.”

If you have natural or kinky curly hair, check out My African Pride Moisture Miracle Honey & Coconut Oil Shampoo ($ 3.86, Walmart.com) and My African Pride Moisture Miracle Honey, Chocolate and Coconut Oil Conditioner ($ 4.48, Walmart.com). The shampoo contains a gentle cleansing formula that removes buildup and product from your hair without stripping the hair from its natural oils. This shampoo leaves your hair super soft. The conditioner boasts cacao (chocolate) that will leave your curls hydrated and nourished.

After you wash and condition your hair, the next step is to use a curling cream and a blow dryer to diffuse and set the curl. Wallace used Suave Professionals Captivating Curls Mousse Cream ($ 2.94, Walmart.com). For your blowdryer, I’m loving the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer ($ 999.99, BedBathAndBeyond.com).

Afterward, Wallace took random sections of the hair and wrapped the tendrils around a 3/4″ FHI Heath Professional Curling Iron to define the curl pattern ($ 71.99, Overstock.com).

Wallace finished off the look by creating a low and effortless messy braid. He added texture and dimension by placing some face framing tendrils around Henson’s face.

Perfection!

Watch the first official trailer for ‘Captain Marvel,’ coming next March

Captain Marvel trailer

Months of anticipation for Marvel fans have led to this moment, as the first trailer for Captain Marvel was shared on Good Morning America Tuesday morning. We got our first look at Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel) earlier this month, but now we finally get the chance to see the new hero in action.

While virtually every Marvel movie receives an extraordinary amount of hype before releasing, Captain Marvel has the important (and incredibly difficult) task of setting up Avengers 4, as it will be the last Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to hit theaters before the sequel to Infinity War arrives. It’s unclear how much it will connect directly to Infinity War though, as it’s set in the 1990s, well before the events of the original Iron Man.

How To Prepare For The Next Financial Downturn

Segment Q&A: Lessons (Hopefully) Learned 10 Years after the Financial Crisis

Background:

September 15th, 2018 marked the 10 year anniversary of the bankruptcy of storied Wall Street firm Lehman Brothers which set off the chain of events that we’ve come to refer to as the Financial Crisis.

While the economy at large has mostly recovered, there is certainly no guarantee that something similar won’t happen again.

Because of that, it’s important to reflect on the lessons that we’ve (hopefully) learned since then so that we do not repeat the same mistakes and so that we’re over prepared for the next one.

Rob, some of us have short memories, or simply want to forget the financial crisis. Can you take us back to what is was like during 2008-09.

Well, September of 2008 is when things started to get real.

The bankruptcy of major Wall Street investment firm Lehman Brothers showed that the housing bubble had officially burst. That month there were a shocking 159,000 jobs lost.

That number would swell to 524,000 (!) jobs lost by December of 2008 and a total of nearly 2 million jobs lost in the last 4 months of 2008 alone!

Other incredible stats from the crisis:

  • 8.8 million jobs lost
  • 8 million homes foreclosed
  • Home prices dropped by 40% or more
  • Retirement balances dropped by 27% in 2008

From Wall Street to Main Street, we were all dramatically impacted by the financial crisis.

How did we get in the mess in the first place?

Well, to put it simply, banks started essentially giving mortgages to anyone who could fog up a mirror.

They instituted things such a “no documentation loans” where you didn’t have to provide proof of your income in order to get a mortgage.

This led to many, many people taking out more in loans than they could afford and when the overly inflated housing market started to cool off, the entire house of cards came crashing down.

When your auntie (who doesn’t know the difference between a hammer and a wrench) called you and started talking about how she was getting into “house flipping” that’s when you should have known that something was really wrong.

So what are the key takeaways that we should have learned from this?

  1. Plan for a Rainy Day

First of all I hope that we’ve learned to plan for a rainy day.

Yes, we’re all happy that the unemployment rate is low and the stock market is high, but those things were also true in 2007.

Recessions and financial setbacks can happen unexpectedly and without much warning.

Just because things seem a little better now, doesn’t mean that it’s time to spend like there’s no tomorrow.

Now is the time to reduce your debt and get your savings in order so that you’ll be in a solid position when and if the economy starts to weaken.

  1. Multiple Streams of Income

Next, I hope that we’ve learned that we all need to have multiple streams of income.

You should never be totally reliant on one source for all of your income. You could be like one off the unfortunate people who left Lehman Brothers on a Friday afternoon to enjoy their weekend, only to find out that they didn’t have a job on Monday morning.

Certainly, give it your all at your main job, but also take some time to do some freelance writing or video editing on the side, sell some items on Amazon or eBay or teach college students how to score better of their graduate school exams, etc.

Do what you have to do the reduce your reliance on your job for all of your income, because we’ve seen that when the going gets tough, the pink slips start going.

  1. Beware the latest investment “fad.”

If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is, even if it appears to work for a period of time.

Look, the fact you’re an HGTV junkie and you never miss an episode of Property Brothers doesn’t make you an expert in flipping houses.

Stay away from “investments” in things that you don’t know very much about, can’t explain and don’t have very much experience with. (ahem…Bitcoin anyone?)

Take the time to become more knowledgeable and find a mentor before you put your hard earned money to work.

Meet the Unlikely Heroes at the Center of Netflix’s ‘Next Gen’

Netflix’s animated feature Next Gen is heading to the streaming platform on September 7. It’s a story about the power of friendship — and a world in danger — that takes place in a future society in which robots are everywhere. And while that may sound like one of the most adorable places to live, unfortunately, not all of the ‘bots have humanity’s best interests in their programming.

The heroes of the story, Mai and 7723, form an unlikely friendship as they discover the metal menace that threatens the planet. Here’s what you need to know about them before you check out Next Gen on Netflix.

Mai

Most kids would be thrilled to live in a world full of robots. But 13-year-old Mai isn’t. She doesn’t like automatons because they took over professional sports and cost her father his career as a soccer player. And though it may be true that adding robots makes most sports way better, it’s sad when people lose their jobs. And just because Mai isn’t a fan of robots, it’s possible she just hasn’t met the right one yet.

7723

7723 is a freshly manufactured superintelligence robot with an important function. He’s there to save the world from the mechanical army set on destroying all humans. 7723 is big, heavily armed, and designed to soak up knowledge. His artificial learning capabilities gain a new purpose when he meets Mai. When he joins the rebellious teen to try to stop a global threat, he 7723 learns that friendship is even stronger than a 40-gigawatt plasma rifle.

See 7723 and Mai on Next Gen, streaming September 7 only on Netflix.

Why Chernobyl should be your next destination?

If you’re planning your next vacation, there’s probably a high chance that you’ll be choosing your destination based on its reviews on TripAdvisor, the attractions that are nearby, the beaches, and whether your friends and family have ever been there. You’re probably not choosing your destination based on whether it has been the site of a nuclear disaster, been considered dangerous to humans, or otherwise abandoned, right? Well, there are some people who are choosing the Chernobyl exclusion zone as their next vacation destination, and we can kinda see why.

Why choose Chernobyl?

If you’re the kind of person that loves to explore new and exciting places, you might spend hours planning your next destination, taking yourself away from the tourist areas, and experiencing something few have ever experienced before. While it’s easy to take a trip to Europe and explore a long-forgotten city that has yet to be taken over by hordes of tourists, it’s just as easy to take yourself back in time – to the time of the Soviet Union. So why not take a visit to Chernobyl and be one of the few people who has ever done so? It’s an adventure!

Taking the tour

Access to the Chernobyl exclusion zone is restricted to those who have not sought permission to enter because the area still carries large amounts of radiation – which can be harmful to humans. Yet, there are many tours and companies who offer you the chance to visit the zone as part of a group, and you will be guided through all of the interesting hotspots, and given information about the Chernobyl disaster. It is forbidden to enter this zone without express permission, and this can often make you feel as if you’re entering a forbidden lair…

How far can you go?

So, the big question! How far can you go into the Chernobyl exclusion zone? Amazingly, you can wander around the the main reactor itself. While it is one of the most radioactive places on earth, it has since been deemed safe for those who are not going to be staying long. This is why you will often be shuffled along the tour when you get to this main area. Nevertheless, it is an incredible sight to see, and one that you should not miss during your lifetime. As if that wasn’t cool enough, you will also feel as though you are in a weird and wonderful science experiment as you wander around the Chernobyl exclusion zone. This is because scientists and researchers in white coats constantly wander around the area taking samples and checking the radiation. Because of the radiation risk, they have to change positions every so often to ensure that the radiation levels do not prove to be too much for them.

Going by the rules

If you’re the kind of person that loves to break the rules and go off on a tangent, you will not be safe in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. This place is extremely dangerous for those who visit – and not just because of the radiation. Due to the large scale of the abandoned area and the destruction, it is easy to get lost or find yourself in an area where there is falling debris. Because of this, it’s important that you stick to the rules at all times. Do not try and give your tour guide the slip, do not go off on your own, and listen to all of their instructions. This is extremely important.

If you’re looking to visit the Chernobyl exclusion zone, it’s important to realize that this isn’t your average day trip. It may scare you, it may make you feel uneasy, and it may make you feel extremely unsafe – but it’s also magical. Seeing the destruction before your eyes is something that will haunt you forever and make you realize how lucky we are.

Expanding the Approach: Next Steps in the Fight Against Campus Rape

More than five years after an administrator and four alumni filed a formal complaint, and after investigating 387 reports of sexual misconduct, the Department of Education has determined that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill failed survivors of sexual assault on its campus.

“The long-awaited UNC decision is important because it was the fourth high-profile case to be filed when campus activists launched the campaign to use federal Title IX complaints to raise awareness of the issue,” Dr. Caroline Heldman, who co-authored a piece on sexual assault and UNC in 2014 for Ms., observed. “As one of the early Title IX cases, it is good to see that justice has finally been served for survivors, albeit many years after they have graduated and left the campus.”

Andrea Pino is one of these early campus activists. After joining with other students to file a Title IX complaint against UNC, Pino gained national recognition for her activism after being featured in the 2015 campus sexual assault documentary The Hunting Ground.

Now, Pino is hopeful that the Department of Education’s ultimate ruling in her case will send a message to young activists about the possibility of 20-year-old students being able to successfully challenge a 200-year-old university.

Andrea Pino (second from L) with Congressional lawmakers in 2014. (via End Rape on Campus on Facebook)

“When I came forward, I didn’t do it for myself. I always said from the beginning: ‘I’m filing this complaint for the class of 2020,’” Pino told Ms. “[Student survivors] don’t need a JD to be in a film. They don’t need to stand on the Oscar stage to believe that it happens. We did it, and anyone else can do it too.”

The Department’s investigation found that UNC failed “to adopt and publish grievance procedures that provide for the prompt and equitable resolution of student, employee and third-party complaints alleging discrimination on the basis of sex” and declared that it “was not prompt in accordance with best practices and federal guidelines, and that University faculty and staff… were not adequately trained.” UNC, however, has yet to admit fault or issue an apology.

Pino is unsurprised. “The best response I could ever get from UNC would be that they would continue to take sexual assault seriously,” she explained, “and continue to take it seriously without the Department of Education breathing down their neck.”

The Department of Education, under the direction of President Trump’s appointed Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, has been working tirelessly to dismantle many of the policies on sexual assault that allowed survivors like Pino to demand justice from their administrations. DeVos has been explicit about her desire to undo the civil rights progress hard-won by advocates over the last century across the realm of education equity, and her department has rescinded key guidance on campus sexual assault which allows campuses to relax guidelines and evade accountability. (Feminist litigators are suing DeVos over the decision.)

Pino, who went on to found the national organization End Rape on Campus with her partner, Annie Clark, and now works at the National Center for Lesbian Rights, hopes that cases like hers move universities to see Title IX as more than a mandate to comply with—and instead as a key component of education access. This would require universities to recognize the impact that sexual assault often has on the education of survivors, who may transfer, change majors, take a semester off or even drop out of school after their assault.

“If students aren’t having that college experience that they are promised in brochures,” Pino asked, “how could they possibly have an equal access education, which is at the root of Title IX?”

As a queer survivor, Pino is also committed to expanding conversations around assault beyond an “archaic he said / she said” framework. “The oppressions that we face as already marginalized people are always further heightened when we experience sexual violence,” Pino said, adding that she hopes advocates will work in the future to “center marginalized folks more authentically, rather than as an afterthought”—and that universities, by thinking about sexual assault as a matter of educational access, will also begin to appoint people who understand these intersections to more campus positions.

Fortunately, Heldman says many schools are keeping Obama-era guidance on campus sexual assault in place—but she recommends activists take a deeper look at their administration’s practices and continue to put pressure on universities to adopt best practices around sexual misconduct, including implementing “a clear policy with specific sanctions listed, bystander training, electronic and anonymous reporting options, a timely and fair adjudication process, survivor-centered support services that are tailored for marginalized populations and strong sanctions to discourage sexual violence on campus.”

But although Pino has spent much of her time in the last years fighting sexual assault on the national stage, she wants all activists to know that their resistance is critical—at every level and in every moment. “You don’t have to be on the front lines all the time to be part of the movement,” she told Ms., stressing resilience over resistance in work around sexual violence—especially for those who often have to constantly relive their experiences when they engage in the activism. “Art is activism. Self-care is activism. Motherhood and fatherhood are activism,” she said, “Showing up means something to everybody. It’s about finding what’s okay for you.”

In the wake of the culmination of her high-profile challenge to campus rape culture, Pino most importantly wants survivors to know that the movement for their own justice still belongs to them.

“There’s no such thing as a perfect survivor,” Pino declared to Ms. “No matter what you drank that night. No matter who you slept with or didn’t sleep with. No matter how you identify. No matter what you were wearing. Who you didn’t hang out with or who you did. It wasn’t your fault. And if you’ve never heard it, I want to be the first person to tell you that I believe you.”

Brock Colyar is a contributor at Ms. He is currently a journalism and gender and sexuality studies major at Northwestern University, where he founded a campus queer and radical feminist magazine and serves as a sexual health and assault peer educator. Much of his spare time is spent overthinking intra-feminist politics and Stevie Nicks. (Photo via Colin Boyle/The Daily Northwestern.)

Meanwhile, Wahlberg's next film has moved to an earlier date in the release calendar. What else does the actor have planned?

Inside Sex Workers’ Fight for the Next Ocasio-Cortez: ‘There’s an Awakening Happening’

Scott Heins

BROOKLYN, New York — This rainy Sunday, sheltered under a mess of trees and surrounded by a circle of supporters, Julia Salazar gave a short speech that covered a number of her core concerns, from labor rights to stable and affordable housing. Salazar, who’s challenging incumbent Democrat Martin Dilan for the New York State Senate’s 18th district seat in North Brooklyn, related all of these issues back to the cause of the day: sex workers’ rights, and the fight for decriminalization.

At the end of her remarks, Salazar heralded the historic meet-up—a canvassing event to talk to voters about Salazar’s sex-work platform—as a step towards “liberation for sex workers, and for everyone in our communities.” Gatherings like this one, in which sex workers, activists, and allies convene in parks, town halls, packed rooms and even Congress, have taken on an increasingly urgent tone in the wake of SESTA/FOSTA, an anti-sex trafficking law that has further criminalized an already criminalized community, putting sex workers out of work and reportedly pushing them into unsafe and exploitative positions. Despite SESTA/FOSTA, which also threatens online communication between sex workers, sex workers’ rights activists have continued to organize—not just against the legislation, but for nothing less than liberation.

Salazar’s sex-work policy, billed as “concrete steps toward decriminalizing sex work and upholding the rights of sex working communities in New York,” includes a number of proposals that would be familiar to sex-work activists and allies. But for a New York state Senate candidate, they’re revolutionary—which is one more thing that Salazar would like to change. “People will say that this is radical,” Salazar told the crowd, “That what we are doing today is radical, that what I’m describing is radical, but we all know that it needs to be the norm.”

The sustainable swimwear brands you need to pack for your next holiday

sustainable swimwear

Words by Jasmine Hemsley (Instagram @JasmineHemsley)

Long before East by West, and before Hemsley+Hemsley, I worked as a model for 15 years. Since much of that time was spent shooting swimwear, if there’s one thing I’m expert in, it’s the difference in confidence that a good-fitting bikini can bring you. It’s not so much about it being ‘flattering’, but about feeling supported, comfortable and happy, in a swimwear design and colour that you also love.

With the growing awareness around what, how and where our clothes are made and increasing choice as to what you can pick, sustainability is a major factor for me when clothes shopping, including for a swimsuit. Today, there is a huge sea change (excuse the pun); brands are popping up with more conscious production methods and established companies are having to reconfigure their own production. These are all moves in the right direction and our buying power can help speed the process up.

The change has happened remarkably fast – only about six years ago, I went online to find some new pyjamas and searched for something ethical and sustainable, but everything I came across was an assault to the senses. Now all you have to do is search for ‘sustainable swimwear’ and you’re presented with near-endless options.

It’s wonderful to have such a range of choice, but where do you even start? I’ve found a few favourites in my research, brands whose designs stand the test of time both quality- and style-wise, because being able to keep an item for years is a huge part of sustainable fashion.

Lilliput and Felix

sustainable swimwear

Shop now: Paeonia bikini for £175 from Liliput & Felix

They create fun silhouettes in bold prints and colours, and have been awarded the Positive Luxury Butterfly Mark, which recognises brands that work to actively diminish their environmental footprint, as well as positively impact their communities.

Ruby Moon

Shop now: Rash Guard for £75 from Rubymoon

This sportswear brand surely deserves a mention, first for privileging comfort and movement in their swimwear, but most importantly for their nonprofit model, using ocean-preserving materials and putting all profits towards business loans to empower female entrepreneurs worldwide.

MYMARINI

sustainable swimwear

Shop now: Bronze sage bikini for around £179 from MYMARINI

Lastly, I’m a big fan of this brand, who are committed to the fair treatment of the workers who create their sleek monochromatic swimsuits, as well as using eco-friendly fabrics and ensuring the timelessness of each piece.

And here are a couple more sustainable swimwear brands from the Marie Claire team…

Davy J

sustainable swimwear

Shop now: The red swimsuit for £140 from David J

Devon-based Davy J’s first collection uses 100% regenerated nylon yarn from waste including spent and ghost fishing nets (an average of 640,000 tons of fishing nets are left in the oceans every year). Their swimsuits are built to last, however, when they do reach the end of their life, you’re encouraged to return them so the brand can recycle them (the target will be to achieve 60% closed loop recycling by 2020).

ToDiveFor

Shop now: One shoulder swimsuit for £65 from ToDiveFor

This is more towards the higher end of things, but if you’re looking for simple, luxury swimwear that’s UK based (so cuts down the journey of your clothing), then ToDiveFor have some gorgeous numbers.

6 Best Movies to Stream for Your Next BFF Movie Night

Getting together with your besties can sometimes be expensive. Drinks, food, movie tickets … it all adds up. The next time you want to save some money but still have a super fun night with your friends, check out these movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Pool your money for pizza and popcorn, and you’ve got a recipe for an excellent (and cheap!) summer night.

Jaws

Shark Week may be over, but don’t let that ruin your bloodlust for the greatest shark movie ever made: Jaws. Set on the East Coast during a sizzling hot summer, beachgoers suddenly begin getting eaten by a vicious shark. The local sheriff makes it his personal mission to kill the shark and save the locals. Directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg, this film will keep you and your friends on the edge of your seats the whole time. If you want to make it a double feature, Jaws and Jaws 2 are both available on Amazon Prime.

Superbad

Superbad is the perfect movie to watch with buddies, since it’s about two friends awkwardly navigating high school life. Michael Cera broke through to a wider audience with his performance in this 2007 comedy as Evan, a high school senior who has one last summer with his best friend before college. He’s joined by the hilarious Jonah Hill as his kooky friend, Seth. Fun fact: The film was co-written by Seth Rogen, who plays a bumbling police officer in the flick. Superbad is available to stream on Amazon Prime.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin

In the mood for a comedy that will have you laughing until you cry? The 40-Year-Old Virgin is exactly what the doctor ordered. Steve Carrell plays Andy, a blue-collar tech support guy at a big-box electronics store. His co-workers find out that he is a virgin at the tender age of 40, so they set out on a mission to find Andy a sexual partner. Hilarity ensues as Andy bumbles opportunity after opportunity until he meets his perfect woman. Fun fact: Adult film star Stormy Daniels has a cameo playing herself during a dream sequence. Stream this hilarious movie on Netflix.

Dirty Dancing

This one goes out to all those kids born in the ’80s who learned about love from Baby and Johnny. Dirty Dancing is the kind of movie you and your friends can watch over and over and never tire of it. The late Patrick Swayze’s best role is arguably that of Johnny Castle. He teaches dance classes to the “wives of rich men” at a Catskill’s family summer camp in the 1950s. When Baby (Jennifer Grey) and her family come for a month, Johnny’s world is turned upside down. The two are so memorable together that it’s hard to think that love existed before they came along. You can stream Dirty Dancing on Amazon right now.

Pretty Woman

Pretty Woman, a 1980s classic, had a thing or two to say about sex and love. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere star in this romantic comedy set in glitzy Los Angeles. Vivian is a call girl who meets Edward, a straight-laced lawyer in town on business. The two fall in love over the course of a week and both of their worlds are changed forever. Fun fact: In the film, Edward takes Vivian to see an opera called “La Traviata,” which mirrors their call girl/regular guy relationship. Pretty Woman is available to stream on Hulu.

Ghostbusters

Ghosts are taking over Manhattan in this hilarious 1984 classic starring Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Harold Ramis. Ghostbusters follows these wacky parapsychology research professors as they battle entities from another realm. Green goo, flying library books, and a giant marshmallow man come into play in this flick that’s a true comedy for the ages. Who you gonna call to stream this funny film? Netflix!

The Games We’re Most Excited About in the Next Two Months

It’s almost the business end of the year. Full of… business. Also games.

August provides the last relatively quiet window for a few indies to release before the proper madness starts, and we’re starting to see some of the bigger releases of the year as well. Namely, you’ve got Marvel’s Spider-Man and Shadow of the Tomb Raider landing very soon.

We’re right around the corner of the delayed PC release of Monster Hunter World of course — a game which is definitely on our radar for Game of the Year so far. As for all the new stuff, here are our picks for the next couple of months.

Dead Cells

August 7th – PC/Mac/Linux, PS4, Switch, Xbox One

This is the final release version of the game that we’ve already been playing for a year. A platformer with a Dark Souls-ey combat system, you’ll try to escape an island that shifts every time you die. Its randomised levels and satisfying fights would’ve been worth the price even in the early stages of its beta. Since then, it’s kept updating its brawlers, biomes, and bosses. This is Early Access done right.

Funnily enough, Dead Cells was originally going to be a tower defence game. There’s an abundance of these 2D pixel art Soulslike roguelite/metroidvanias, and we have no problem with that at all.

We Happy Few

August 10th – PC/Mac/Linux, PS4, Xbox One

We get some serious Bioshock mashed up with A Clockwork Orange vibes from this one. A futuristic, dystopian city requires everyone to take their “joy” to be happy, productive citizens.

What happens when you stop taking it? Presumably, Taye Diggs starts chasing you. The seemingly “beneficial” nature of the city’s drug has nearly resulted in the game being banned in some territories. Let’s hope it’s worth all the trouble.

Death’s Gambit

August 14th – PC, PS4

I mean, when we said there’s an abundance of these games, we meant it. Death’s Gambit is another 2D pixel art Soulslike metroidvania, seemingly a niche genre but hoo boy is it populated.

The biggest twist here is every time you die, you actually drop one of your healing items as well as your “souls.” Returning to your point of death is that much more important, now that it’s necessary to regain that healing charge.

That’s pretty cruel. Imagine if death lost you an Estus shard in Dark Souls. But Death’s Gambit is also letting you invest excess healing items to upgrade stats, sacrificing a heal or two to buff your damage or something else.

There’s also the ability to challenge a boss again right after you’ve defeated them, which is fantastic — we always felt the bonfire ascetic should’ve been carried over from Dark Souls 2 into other games.

PES 2019

August 30th – PC, PS4, Xbox One

Slated a full month before its main competitor, PES likes to be the first to market every year. Though it has to be said, a lot of the features it was spruiking at E3 this year were implemented by FIFA a year or two ago. It doesn’t help that it lost the Champions League licence as well, but people who play PES don’t play it for the licences.

We’ll still be putting this one through it’s paces because what’s important to us is under the hood. After the handful of games we’ve had it was hard to isolate and test the newer AI functionality PES 2019 is supposed to have. Things like players reading the play a few steps ahead, and responding in a way that more accurately represents their style. It’s the type of thing we’ll have to really sit down and analyse, and that’s alright with us.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

September 7th – PS4

No surprises seeing the mighty web-slinger here, as we’re pretty sure it’s the game many people are most looking forward to this year. This PS4 exclusive has many debating who the final boss could be. Who’s capable of bringing this who’s who of villains into one plan as if they were mere henchmen?

This one features combat that’s looking oh-so-Arkham, some baller Spidey suits, and – most importantly – getting across town feels great as you sling like it ain’t no thing.

We’ll be previewing this one soon, so keep FANDOM bookmarked and wait for your Spidey sense to tingle.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

September 14th – PC, PS4, Xbox One

My goodness, how much of a beating will Lara have to take before she becomes the Tomb Raider? We’re still smarting from seeing a lead pipe go right through her gut in the first reboot.

It sure looks purdy though, as long as we never have to wear the haptic suits from Ready Player One to feel every shank and bullet bothering the new, always-wounded Lara Croft, we’re up for a bit of tribal island madness.

Valkyria Chronicles 4

September 25th – PC, Xbox One, PS4, Switch

We’ve been jonesing for this one since… well, 2008, when the original Valkyria Chronicles came out. The mix of World War I and anime was a surprisingly engrossing setting for first-person, turn-based tactics.

It was fantastic fun, but for some reason the gods of gaming saw fit to limit the next two games to Sony’s PSP. No shade to PSP owners, but it’s a travesty these games weren’t available to more people.

Now at last, we get the multiplatform release we’ve been waiting for. We’re sure there are many who will see this as the proper Valkyria Chronicles 2 in a way, and we can only hope the developers have factored that into their storytelling.

FIFA 19

28th September – PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PS3, 360, Android, iOS

A full month later than its rival, the dominant football franchise lands. FIFA releases are up and down — sometimes the franchise coasts with a bunch of fluffy, cosmetic features like improved grass and spectator clapping. Other years you’ll get hyper-intelligent AI improvements and important balance tweaks.

If you’re not the sort to buy every release anyway, it’s worth paying attention to see whether that year brings one of the “good” ones.

All told, the feature list doesn’t look too disruptive this year, but the timed shots will have a massive, unignorable effect on how you play. We liked the pace and the feel of what we played at E3 this year, but much like PES, we’ll need some more time with this one before singing its praises.

‘A Quiet Place’ Breakout Star on Being a Deaf Role Model, What’s Next

Millicent Simmonds may be the breakout star of the horror hit A Quiet Place, but she remains humble about her status as a deaf icon and her future in the entertainment industry.

The film recently came out for home entertainment, allowing audiences to relive the suspenseful story, or experience for the first time.

Simmonds, who is just 15, admits she was surprised by the film’s success (read our review here).

I didn’t imagine it would take off like this and it was quite a surprise to see that and how much interest people have in this movie,” she told FANDOM’s Clarke Wolfe.

Part of the interest is in her character Regan, the deaf daughter of Lee (John Krasinski) and Evelyn (Emily Blunt). The actors learned American Sign Language from instructors, and Simmonds also helped with teaching.

To see a deaf actor in a deaf role has thrust Simmonds into the spotlight, which she is willing to share.

“It’s really great but it’s not just me as a deaf role model: it’s Lauren Ridloff, it’s Shoshannah [Stern], it’s Josh Feldman, Nyle DiMarco. All of these great actors and people that are involved in Hollywood,” she explained. “They’re deaf and they’ve inspired me as well. It’s nice for me to be able to connect to the community that I am part of.”

That community has praised her on social media:

Simmonds has received critical acclaim for her role in Wonderstruck, including a Critic’s Choice Awards. Expect to see her get some more nominations for A Quiet Place as awards season comes around.

The movie is out on digital, Blu-ray and 4k.

In the bonus clip, Simmonds discusses working with Krasinski in his directorial debut.

In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (above), Chris Pratt is a reluctant hero, pressed into service to track down the grown-up Velociraptor named Blue when a volcano erupts at the ruined theme park formerly known as Jurassic World. The film unleashes a flurry of dark delights, which we won't spoil here, but we can definitely recommend seeing it in a theater.

While we'd love to see Pratt reprise his role as Owen Grady in another installment in the Jurassic series, here is what's…

Elder Scrolls 6 Location Guide – Where Could Bethesda’s Next Game be Set?

If there’s one game that’s probably on most gamers’ wishlist, it’s Elder Scrolls 6. Bethesda is keeping incredibly tight-lipped on the topic however, especially regarding the game’s existence and where the Elder Scrolls 6 location would be.

Whether it’s Valenwood or Argonia, there’s been plenty of speculation as to what the Elder Scrolls 6 setting will be.

Here we take a look at the possibilities and top fan favourites for the Elder Scrolls 6 locations.

A brief history of Elder Scrolls

Of course, the location for the game is more than just a setting, it also gives us an idea of what the game’s called.

For example, Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall was set across the High Rock and Hammerfell provinces, while Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind took you to the island of Vvardenfell.

Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion was set in Cyrodil and finally Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim took us to… well, Skyrim.

All these locations were featured in the original game, Elder Scrolls Arena. It’s the only Elder Scrolls game to date to allow you to explore the full empire of Tamriel, but sadly because it was 1994 it was very basic and repetitive.

The original map from Elder Scrolls Arena looks something like this:

Elder Scrolls Arena map
From left to right: Summerset Isle, High Rock, Hammerfell, Valenwood, Skyrim, Imperial Province, Elsweyr, Black Marsh and Morrowind

In fact, this awesome map from a Reddit user sums up where the events of all the Elder Scrolls events have taken place so far:

Tamriel Elder Scrolls game map

All the events of every Elder Scrolls game since have taken place within Tamriel, so it’s safe to believe that it’ll be the same for Elder Scrolls 6.

With that in mind, here are all the potential Elder Scrolls 6 locations currently up for games within Tamriel.

Elder Scrolls 6: Valenwood

Elder Scrolls, Valenwood
The Valenwood province of Tamriel

Location: Valenwood is a south-western province of Tamriel, west of Elsweyr, south-west of Cyrodiil and east of the Abecean Sea.

Home to the Wood Elves or Bosmer, this is a largely uninhabited forest wilderness. The coastlines are dominated by mangrove swamps and rain forests.

Likelihood: Strong

Valenwood is one of the spots in Tamriel that Bethesda hasn’t yet explored in the Elder Scrolls series beyond Arena.

However, there’s also a purportedly leaked memo from within Bethesda back in 2014 that supports a Valenwood location.

The memo allegedly prohibited Bethesda employees from “using or referencing” a number of terms. These included Fallout: Nuka World, which ended up being part of a Fallout 4 DLC release, Elder Scrolls 6 or something known as Project Greenheart.

Many believe that Project Greenheart is the codename for Elder Scrolls 6 because Greenheart is a city found in the Valenwood region.

Coincidence? Probably not.

Elder Scrolls 6: Elsweyr

The Elsyweyr province of Tamriel

Location: Elsweyr is a region of Tamriel bordered by Valenwood on the west, Cyrodiil to the north and east and Argonia to the east.

The province is separated into two nations: Anequina to the north and Pelletine to the South. Anequina is a desert-like badlands similar to Hammerfell. Pelletine, on the other hand, is a mixture of dense jungles and woodlands like Valenwood.

It’s the home of the feline race of Elder Scrolls, the Khajiit.

Likelihood: Possible.

Bethesda has regularly said that the setting of Elder Scrolls games tends to be based on which province has the most lore.

There’s plenty of information about Elsweyr in the previous games, so could be a great base to build Elder Scrolls 6.

Elder Scrolls 6: Hammerfell

Hammerfell, Elder Scrolls
The Hammerfell province of Tamriel

Location: Hammerfell is a vast province to the west of Tamriel. The region is bordered by High Rock to the north, Skyrim to the north-east and Cyrodiil to the east and south-east.

It’s a massive region that’s covered by mountain ranges, grasslands and even deserts – just for that real mix of terrains.

The Redguards call Hammerfell their home, who are a race of men known for their cunning and skilled swordsmanship.

Likelihood: Strong.

The only issue with Hammerfell being a potential location for Elder Scrolls 6 is that it was partially featured in Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall.

However, at E3 2018, Bethesda released the first teaser trailer for the game, revealing few details beyond a sweeping view of a mountainous region. This could indicate that Hammerfell will be the location for the upcoming sequel.

Hammerfell is an absolutely massive region so there’s plenty more that Elder Scrolls 6 could explore.

Elder Scrolls 6: Argonia

Elder Scrolls Argonia, or Black Marsh
The Black Marsh or Argonia region of Tamriel

Location: The Black Marsh, known also as Argonia, is a region in the south-east of Tamriel. It’s bordered by Morrowind to the north, Cyrodiil to the west and protected by both the Topal Sea and the Padomaic Ocean.

It’s here that the reptilian Argonians call home, some of which you will encounter in other Elder Scrolls games.

The province is filled with great rivers and impenetrable swamps. It seems to be ruled by the King of Argonia and an Argonian Royal court.

Likelihood: Strong

Online rumours have speculated that Argonia or the Black Marsh will be the setting for Elder Scrolls 6 for years.

Although there don’t seem to be any verified leaks as yet, it is one location that the Elder Scrolls series hasn’t yet explored.

Plus, there’s plenty of knowledge of the Argonian race in previous games to support the next game exploring their homeland region.

Elder Scrolls 6: Akavir

Akavir Elder Scrolls
There are currently only fan-made maps of Akavir, but it could look something like this

Location: Akavir or the “Dragon Land” is one of the only areas in this list that’s outside of Tamriel.

It’s actually a totally different continent that lies to the east of Tamriel and is the homeland of the Akaviri.

These people are made up of unrelated races, the Snow Demons of Jamal, the serpent men of Tsaesci, the Monkey People of Tang Mo and the Tiger Dragons of Ka’Po’Tun.

Little is known about the continent but it is referenced multiple times throughout the series.

Likelihood: Possible.

If Bethesda thinks the Elder Scrolls series is just retreading old ground in Tamriel, moving to the nearby yet historically connected continent of Akavir definitely has potential.

Elder Scrolls 6: Atmora

Atmora Elder Scrolls
Again, there are no real images for Atmora from the game, so this is a fan-created outline of the continent

Location: Atmora, also known as Elder Wood, is a frozen continent way to the north of Tamriel, across the Sea of Ghosts.

It’s described in the Elder Scrolls series as a place of permanent winter, with little life and no sign of habitation.

Likelihood: Very unlikely.

Nothing lives in this land of ice, so what reason would Bethesda have to set Elder Scrolls 6 there?

Elder Scrolls 6: Alinor

Elder Scrolls Summerset Isles

Location: The Summerset Isles, also known as Alinor, is an archipelago consisting of three major islands: Summerset, Auridon and Artaeum.

The archipelago is located to the south-west of Tamriel and west of Valenwood in the Abecean Sea.

It’s home to the Altmer or High Elves/Western Elves. They’re one of the ten default playable races in Elder Scrolls games and are primarily known for their enhanced magic abilities.

Likelihood: Possible.

The High Elves are one of the most popular races in Elder Scrolls, and any player would love to see a game set in their homeland.

There’s plenty of history when it comes to the Summerset Isles too, which could give a major AAA release plenty of source material.

Plus, there’s a couple in Fallout 4 called the Summersets. Is that a little hint from Bethesda?

FASHION DEAL UPDATE:

Why ‘Barry’ deserves to be your next summer binge

TwitterFacebook

Quick question: Why on earth haven’t you checked out Barry yet?

Dramedy is a word I refuse to use. In part because it sounds like off-brand motion sickness medication, but mostly because it’s very rarely the right word to use. Just because one episode of The Big Bang Theory pulled at your heartstrings and Tyrion Lannister occasionally gets a zinger in after a Game of Thrones massacre, those series aren’t “dramedies.” That being said, I’m willing to break my rule for HBO’s Barry, the truest dramedy on television and the most underrated show of this past spring.

Alec Berg (Silicon Valley‘s executive producer) and Bill Hader (SNL alumnus) head up this tale of “a hitman searching for some direction.” Hader portrays the eponymous Barry, a former marine turned contract killer who comes to Los Angeles to complete a job for the Chechen mob. While tracking the target of the hit (a fitness trainer named Ryan), Barry stumbles into the world of amateur acting. Within seconds of being on stage, he decides to leave behind his life as a professional killer and pursue his newfound showbiz dream. Of course, leaving such a violent profession won’t be easy. How to avoid long customs and immigration lines on your next trip

So you’ve just sat on a plane for thirteen hours traveling from Indonesia, what you’ll then have to do is stand in line for another few hours waiting to get through customs and immigration. If only there some sort of guide was available to help you get through quicker…

You’re standing in line, it seems as though time itself has stood still and seconds can feel like hours. Not to mention you’ve got someone behind you huffing and puffing so much you can actually feel their breath on the back of your neck. Don’t even get us started on the crying baby that seems to have followed you from the plane to the customs line.

There’s an app for that

Re-entering the country doesn’t have to be as much of a hassle as you think though. It is possible to download the Mobile Passport app on your cell phone which will get you through customs and immigration in mere minutes instead of the several hours it usually takes. It is relatively unheard of so the lines for getting through are very small at the airport. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you will need to save a bit of your basic personal information on it, such as a photo and your passport number. After you have landed and are being taxied, you can take your phone off airplane mode and access the app. You will have to answer some basic questions just like you would at customs. Once complete and you’ve arrived at the customs kiosks you can head on over to the Mobile Passport lane and show them the QR code you’ll get for completing the questions on the Mobile Passport app. Show them the code and then proceed through and you can leave the misery of standing in the customs and immigration line to everyone else. You can even include your family members traveling with you.

Global Entry

You can enroll in the Global Entry scheme which gains quicker passage through customs and immigration for American citizens. Low-risk travelers qualify, and it allows them to bypass lines when they get to customs and immigration in the U.S. They just have to simply stroll up to a kiosk and enter their pin number, known as a Trusted Traveler number, along with doing a fingerprint scan. The Global Entry scheme doesn’t work for family members though, they will have to become approved individually, so if you’re planning a family trip abroad, you’ll need to get the whole family enrolled or else you’ll have to wait anyway. Global Entry will set you back $ 100 for five years, which is a good return for your investment if you are a frequent traveler. You’ll just need to head over to the Global Entry website to see whether you qualify and you can begin your application process.

Those were the two tips we think will save you a bunch of time at the airport when you land back in the States. We think it is worth giving them a go as anything beats being stuck in line for hours at a time.

Scouted: The Next Time You Go Camping Or To A Concert, Bring This Portable Seat

If you’ve gone to a music festival — or otherwise outdoorsy event — you likely know the struggle of finding a seat. While plopping down on the ground is always an option, it’s often not the most desirable one. This is where the Sitpack 2.0 comes in. It’s a compact portable seat that collapses to the size of a can when not in use. The portable seat lets you take a load off wherever you may be, and it’s on sale for nearly 40 percent off the usual price.

The Sitpack is fashioned from durable, glass fiber-reinforced polycarbonate and weighs in at a meager 1.3 pounds, so it’s not too cumbersome to tote around. It’s suitable for all types of terrain (think rocky trails, grassy parks) and, thanks to the alligator foot clamp, it will keep you upright while you’re using it. It’s also height adjustable, so it’ll fit you as well as any friends who need a quick rest.

The Sitpack lets you discreetly pack a seat wherever you go and give your legs a rest when the day gets long. It normally retails for $ 65, but you can get it on sale today for $ 39.95, saving nearly 40 percent off the usual retail price.

American Idol Judges Pull Surprise Move After Drag Queen Ada Vox Wasn’t Voted Into Next Round

Live television calls for some surprises every now and then.

On Monday’s first live episode of American Idol , judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan pulled a move that even host, Ryan Seacrest, was blown away by.

Though performer and drag queen Ada Vox wasn’t voted through to the next round by viewers after Sunday’s performance, she was given the chance to redeem herself. The judges, who could save four contestants who were not voted through, had the option of either saving Ada or sending her home – but immediately after Ada’s performance, they couldn’t hold back.

“I don’t know everything,” Perry told Ada. “But I think we do know talent when we see it.”

Without waiting for Seacrest’s directions, the three judges mixed things up and simultaneously pointed to where the Top 10 were seated and said she belonged there – no ifs, ands or buts.

“When the Ada moment came, it wasn’t just one person’s idea,” Perry, 33, told reporters after the show. “We all looked at each other and we saw the math … excuse us, we’re going to step in now. Were we allowed to do that? We found out we were.”

“We messed up the timetable a bit, but you know what it was, we felt so strongly about it, we didn’t have to wait for that vote,” added Richie, 68.

“Enough was enough and you put your foot down when it’s real,” said Perry. “We stand for truth and for justice.”

Ada, who has auditioned for Idol every season since the age of 16, previously told PEOPLE, “I have a much bigger skin this time around. I’m not afraid to hear the hate. It can bounce off of me and I can use it to build myself up.”

Also known as Adam Sanders when not in drag, Ada says, “Mr. Adam is the base of everything that I am. That’s just who I am and what I do every day of my life. Ms. Ada is kinda of the outer exterior, is a personification of the diva in Adam.”

Marcio Donaldson, Mara Justine, Jonny Brenns and Garrett Jacobs were eliminated leaving Maddie Poppe, Cade Foehner, Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Michael J. Woodard, Catie Turner, Ada Vox, Jurnee, Michelle Sussett and Dennis Lorenzo as the Top 10.

American Idol airs on Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

Trump’s Next Top Diplomat Can’t Save His Own Face

Jim Watson/Getty

Most diplomats, when their old positions put their objectives at risk, look for opportunities to de-escalate conflict. Mike Pompeo, Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, didn’t take the off-ramps that senators repeatedly offered him on Thursday.

Pompeo was never going to have an easy confirmation hearing. As a tea-party congressman before joining the administration, he had made bigoted statements about American Muslims. As Trump’s CIA director, Pompeo has used bellicose rhetoric against Iran and North Korea, to the delight of the White House, which has recently taken to purging national-security officials Trump considered out of sync with his impulses.

Bob Corker, the GOP chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Pompeo his colleagues were justified in wondering if his closeness with the president is “based on deferential willingness to go along to get along.” That kicked off five long and often agonizing hours in which Pompeo found himself caught between the president he seeks to please, the politician he used to be, and the senators he needs to convince.

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski's Next Movie: 'Mary Poppins Returns,' 'Fantastic Four' Fantasy

This past weekend, A Quiet Place scored a much bigger total at the box office than expected. Even better than that, though, it reinforced the range of Emily Blunt and also set things up nicely for the next phase of John Krasinski's career as a director and actor.

The film's writers already have sequel ideas, though it's not at all certain that Blunt and/or Krasinski will return. Even if they are not involved in a sequel, their futures certainly look bright.

Allow Me to Present the Next Wave of the “Ugly” Sneaker

Every trend has a bell curve; popularity climbs and climbs and climbs until it doesn’t. As much as we love the chunky dad sneakers that have dominated 2018, at some point, the chunky-soled styles will give way to something new. If we were to take bets on what that might be, our money would be all in on Velcro sneakers. Think of these hassle-free shoes as the pared-down sibling to those over-the-top styles you’ve seen on the feet of all your favorite trendsetters.

While Velcro offers the same “so uncool it’s actually cool” aesthetic that have made dad sneakers a favorite, there’s a bit more room to pick your own level of commitment. Some styles skew minimalist while others are a statement dressers dream; this trend definitely isn’t one size fits all. So if you’re ready to give Velcro sneakers a try (trust us, you are), get ready to embrace your inner child and shop our favorite styles below.

Trendy without ever feeling like they’re trying too hard. Available in sizes 37 to 40.
If you’re not quite over those chunky soles, this style is for you. Available in sizes IT35 to IT40.
You can’t go wrong with a simple classic. Available in sizes 5 to 10.
These sneakers are sporty enough to survive a workout, but look cool too.  Available in sizes 6 to 7.
A style that’s ideal for the minimalist. Available in size 41.
Meet the dad-Velcro sneaker hybrid. Available in sizes 35 to 36.
For the skater and the trendsetter too. Available in sizes 4h to 9.
This dusty pink is a fun option for those who love the pretty hue. Available in sizes 6.5 to 10.5.
These sneakers will look great with jeans or a dress. Available in size 9.
Add a little lift with these platform shoes. Available in sizes 5 to 11.5.
Your feet will feel so fancy in these sneakers. Available in sizes IT26 to IT40.
There’s something so fun about these sneakers. Available in sizes IT37 to IT38.5.
A futuristic-feeling interpretation of the trend. Available in sizes IT36 to IT39.
These Nike sneakers have been a in-crowd favorite. Available in sizes 6 to 12.
There’s no calling these sneakers boring. Available in sizes IT36 to IT40.
If retro sneakers are your thing, you’ll want to give these a try. Available in sizes 6.5 to 11.
Proof that simplicity is always a good thing. Available in size 11.
These French sneakers look cool with everything. Available in sizes 36 to 41.  Now you’re all set to give the trend a try.

Here’s why #AgingLikeAPresident is becoming the next big hashtag for moms

by

Becky Vieira

posted in Parenting

We all age. Some of us are just doing it faster than others. The physical signs of it appear more quickly and pronounced due to exhaustion and stress. This is often the case with mothers.

Mothers age very, very quickly.

It’s become common knowledge that those who’ve held the office of President of the United States of America are among what appears to be the most rapid agers. Countless photo essays have compiled before and after images former presidents. And they are indeed drastically different.

Pop culture has adopted the term “aging like a president” to define this phenomenon. You begin a journey filled with exuberance and a glow of excitement. But, over time, it wears you down. Sleepless nights. Worry. Fear and stress, everything begins to show on your face.

Mom is aging like a president in comparison photos

I say that’s something to be proud of. A badge of honor, showing the world what we’re made of and have endured. And for those of us moms who have been aging this way since our kids were born, I say we wear it with pride.

I look different since my son was born. Older, perhaps. Definitely more tired. But I think there is a glow of love and happiness that wasn’t there before. I love it.

I’ll admit, the rapid disintegration of my youth is like nothing I’ve ever witnessed. Sometimes I curse the new wrinkles on my face, or the bags under my eyes. Then I remember how I earned them. And I smile my mom-smile — the one that now has extra crinkles around the eyes.

It’s time to embrace it. I’m claiming the hashtag #AgingLikeAPresident for all moms. Forget #momlife, this says it all.

I’ve started using the hashtag on my mom life Instagram account, and others have been embracing it. And sharing their own photos and stories.

“I keep my coffee cup on a high shelf. I was trying to use the bathroom and I heard, “uh oh! Uh oh!” My son apparently can reach the shelf now. The first time, ever, and I’m in another room. He spilled it all over himself, the couch, rug, across the house. Thankfully my coffee is never hot. And that’s just one example of why I’ve aged 10 years in the last 18 months. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.” — Melissa Robles

Mom with one kid and mom after two kids

“In this moment, every wrinkle, gray hair and emotional scar feels like it’s worth it. These little guys depend on me and I don’t want to let them down.” —Marilu Livermore

Mom when pregnant compared to mom after children

“The before picture was a few hours before labor started, so I thought I looked awfully exhausted when that picture was taken. Now, with a 17-month old son, I think I look like a supermodel on that picture!! But hey, my son can’t tell I look older; I’m still his awesome mommy!” —Natalia Jiménez

“I’ve earned these bags under my eyes, every wrinkle on my face and gray hair on my head being a new mother!” —Toni Paolillo

“Before” me had no idea what lay ahead, complicated labour, emergency c section, a tiny 5lb 7 baby with reflux, tongue tie and trouble breastfeeding. Followed by postnatal depression. And even though all that may have #agedmelikeapresident “after” me had never felt so loved in my life. —Rhiannon Connon

Show us what you’ve earned, moms. We can’t wait to see how hard you’ve all worked to be officially #AgingLikeAPresident.

How to pick your next vacation spot

So you have chosen to travel. You decided that you would rather invest in an experience than a material item, so you start to save for your next trip. But where in the world should you go? It’s a tough question with so many wonderful options. Of course, the amount of time you have, as well as your budget play large parts in your final choice.  Whatever your unique situation may be, here is how to pick your next vacation destination.

You will first need to ask yourself what kind of vacation you would like. Are you a city person, a beach bum or a countryside lover? Do you want somewhere with hot or cold weather? Are you seeking relaxation or adventure? Culture, adrenaline or shopping? Who are you traveling with? Are you splurging or budgeting? Would you rather go to the popular tourist spots or go off the beaten track?  Once you have a general direction of what type of holiday you have in mind, it makes it much easier to start to explore spots.

When searching for a vacation destination, it is important to be open minded. Just because you have never heard of a certain place or can’t say it’s name properly, if you find a cheap flight then why not go for it? Just make sure it is safe before, of course. Going out of your comfort zone can allow you to have the best possible trip ever.

It is also useful to be creative as much as you can. If the flights are super expensive to your dream destination, find an alternative spot. Perhaps do not fly direct and find a bus that goes there from a cheaper airport.  You should also take the underdog into consideration and look into a country’s second city, which is usually cheaper and makes a unique option.

Once you find a place that speaks to you, be decisive, but it is so easy to think about it for weeks on end contemplating if it the right move. By waiting around too long you can miss out on a great opportunity. So once you make a choice, book it right away.  If you are feeling unsure about your travel plans, ask yourself why you want to travel? Try to understand what you are seeking to gain, whether it be to have quality time with your friends, relax, reconnect, disconnect, learn, have an adventure or work on your tan.  By understanding why you are desiring a trip it can make it much easier to chose where you should go.

Always keep in mind that the only things you will regret and those that you did not do. Remember this when you are feeling like you are not adventurous enough and need that extra push.  However do not feel as though making a safe choice is a bad one. As much as being adventurous is exciting and often necessary, doing something you know is good and a safe choice has no shame. If you enjoy yourself, then that is what’s most important.

In addition, if you find a vacation destination you are dying to go to and cannot find a partner to go with you, do not let this hold you back. Go solo and do what is good for you.  And who said that traveling has to be far away? Sometimes going close to home can make for a wonderful option and you’ll be surprised and how many hidden treasures there are right nearby.

If budget is what is holding you back, do not let it stop you from getting away. Even expensive countries have options such as hostels, and free tours that allow for a cheaper trip. It requires being more creative but that’s what traveling is all about.

Why you should apply sunscreen before boarding your next flight

Ahhh, the good ol’ summer vacation. Can’t you just taste it already? The sweet cocktails, the new and exciting foods, the blazing sun beating down on your back. Mmm. Ahhhh. Oops, sorry! We got a little carried away there. In the run-up to your summer vacation, you probably spend weeks packing and repacking your suitcase, making sure you pack the right items. Of course, you’re always going to need three changes of clothes a day – because why keep it casual when you’re on your vacay? You’ll need a good pair of glasses to hide the fact that you’re snoozing by the pool, and you’ll need some sunscreen… because you do NOT want to return home looking like a lobster. Y’know, unless that’s your thing. Yet, it seems you might want to wear also want to wear sunscreen before your plane lands.

Packing essential

Even if you choose to go on a winter vacation and make friends with bears on the top of a mountain (we hope you can ski pretty fast), you’ll still need to take sunscreen with you. Indeed, it’s a packing essential! No matter whether it’s hot or cold, or even if there’s a bit of cloud coverage, UV rays still beat down on your skin. Luckily, sunscreen helps to form a barrier between your skin to stop the rays from penetrating your body and causing long-term damage to your health. However, there are often times where these rays can still prove damaging, and it’s normally when you least expect it…

Before you fly

Before your flight takes off, you probably ensure that you’ve packed everything – although there’s still a high chance you still left your cell phone charger at home. You also make sure you’ve got some in-flight entertainment, like a magazine or a movie downloaded on your tablet. Of course, you also need to make sure you have snacks for the journey (duh). But have you ever made sure that you have applied sunscreen before you fly high in the skies? Most of us don’t, but experts now suggest we should apply sunscreen before and during your flights.

How it affects you

Despite the fact that you are covered by a metal container in the air, experts have confirmed that ultraviolet rays are still able to pass through the windows of the airplane – which can prove harmful to your skin and body. In fact, these rays are much more harmful up in the air as they are on the ground. Because they have further to travel, these rays are much stronger, and the airplane windows do not protect you from them. One 2015 study has noted that pilots spending just 56 minutes in the cockpit at 30,000 feet were subjected to the same amount of cancer-causing radiation as someone who has spent the last 20 minutes on a tanning bed.

What you need to do

Obviously, if you’re sitting near a window seat or just within sitting distance of a window, this radiation came filter through and damage your skin. Because of this, experts suggest that you should wear sunscreen whenever you board a flight to protect yourself. If you’re on a long-haul flight, you’ll then need to re-apply even more sunscreen every two hours. After all, you need to check yourself before you wreck yourself!

When you go on vacation, you probably don’t even think about applying sun lotion BEFORE you get to your final destination – but the experts have spoken. So, to keep you and your skin healthy, it’s always best to slather yourself before you expose yourself to any form of sunlight!

Face ID will only come to Android phones next year, but it won’t be the same as the iPhone X

Face ID on Android

A report a few days ago said that Apple has a two-year lead on Android rivals when it comes to the adoption of advanced 3D face-scanning technologies. Many Android device makers may be in a hurry to copy the iPhone X look and feel, and we’ve seen dozens of notch clones already, but these notch bezels won’t house TrueDepth-like cameras.

New reports say that Android device makers will have to wait one more year to deploy devices with 3D-sensing capabilities. When these devices arrive, they might not be Galaxy or Pixel phones. And they might not even launch in international markets at first.

Could Mark Jackson Coach The New York Knicks Next Season?

Golden State Warriors v Los Angeles Clippers - Game Seven

Source: Stephen Dunn / Getty

Not much has change with regards to the the Knicks this season.

Carmelo Anthony left New York, as many expected, to join forces with Paul George and Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City and Kristaps Porzingis became the face of the franchise. But on February 6, the 7 footer suffered a torn ACL and is ruled out the rest of the season and isn’t expected to return to the court for at least 10 to 12 months. But, him being out has given others like Trey Burke Frank Ntilikina a chance to get more possessions alongside the $ 70 million man, Tim Hardaway Jr, and big man Enes Kanter.

Despite that, the New York Knicks are still the New York Knicks. They may have just won there second straight thanks to Ntilikina scoring a season-high 19 points, but they’re currently 11th in the east with a 26-45 record. The staff and players that Phil Jackson hired still loom in the front office and the most obvious that doesn’t seem to be working out is head coach Jeff Hornacek. And according to Marc Stein of the New York Times, Mark Jackson is looking like a suitable replacement. Jackson was most recently the head coach for the Golden State Warriors from 2011-2014, helping the go from 23-43 in 2011-12, 47-35 in 2012-13 and 51-31 in 2013-14. If Jackson could put the Warriors on the road to success, he could very well do the same in the Big Apple.

In other Knick news, Porzingis underwent ACL surgery over a month ago and was already spotted putting up shots at the gym at his Manhattan apartment building. Coach Hornacek doesn’t seem too worried because he’s not in any physical contact. But an even bigger problem looms at Madison Square Garden, its name is Joakim Noah and it costs $ 72 million. Noah hasn’t reported to the team since a verbal altercation with Hornacek in January.
