One of these upcoming shows could be your next ‘Game of Thrones’-style obsession

Game of Thrones

A newly published interview between Rolling Stone and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, no surprise, touches at one point on the intense fandom around the series, which is taking a bow on Sunday with the sixth episode of the show’s eighth and final season.

It’s a degree of fandom that has many fans so upset at the surprises that have been thrown at them this season, that more than 876,000 of them as of the time of this writing have signed a petition essentially begging HBO to remake season 8 with new writers (which is obviously never going to happen).

The Race Is on to Find the Next Sustainable Superstar Seafood

“There is no more normal in California,” says Kenny Belov, the owner of Two X Sea, a seafood restaurant and wholesaler on San Francisco’s waterfront. He’s not talking about the state’s wildfires or housing prices–although he certainly could be. Instead he means California fish: “People will drop their gear in the water, but there is no guarantee that they will bring something up.”

When it comes to seafood harvested from the Pacific Ocean, what’s familiar may not be sustainable. And what’s sustainable may not have mass appeal. But thanks to a determined group of fishermen, purveyors, and foragers in California, that may be changing. It just may not be changing fast enough.

Thanks to human activity, the water off of California’s coast is warming. Last August, the surface of the sea surface off San Diego reached the highest temperature ever recorded. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, average sea surface temperatures on California’s Pacific coast rose a degree to a degree and a half Fahrenheit since the beginning of the 20th century.

Climate change has already pummeled an industry that reached $ 196 million in revenue in 2017, the most recent year for which data is available. In 2015, an outbreak of toxic algae that may thrive in warming waters triggered the closure of most of the year’s Dungeness crab season. Climate change is expected to cause moderate to severe declines in salmon populations across California and the Pacific Northwest. And the habitat of species like the spiny lobster has been pushed northward.

What's next-Finless Foods

To be sure, not every indicator is negative. In March, Christopher Free, a postdoctral scholar at the University of California,Santa Barbara was the lead author on a paper in Science that estimated the effect of climate change on fisheries. Although the global maximum sustainable yield dropped 4.1% from 1930 to 2010, the decrease was not evenly distributed. In the California Current, a Pacific Ocean current moving southward along the western coast of North America, Free tells me, “fish populations haven’t been strongly impacted by warming. It’s probably the result of good management.” For each of the species that Free and his coauthors analyzed–which included sardine, lingcod, and rockfish–the estimated effect of warming in California was statistically indistinguishable from zero.

But past successes do not guarantee future ones. For Belov, the problem is easy to state and hard to solve: “The things we want are the things we shouldn’t be eating.”

What to Eat Next

“It’s depressing. What do Americans eat? The number one seafood consumed in North America is shrimp,” adds Kirk Lombard, a friend of Belov and the founder of Sea Forager, which gives coastal walking tours and sells sustainable seafood.

For Lombard, the most sustainable seafood to eat live at the bottom of the food chain: “The gospel of small fishes,” he says. It’s one thing to realize that wild salmon or bluefin tuna isn’t the most sustainable option. It’s quite another to convince consumer to substitute them with unfamiliar seafood like purple urchins, which tend not have the same amount of roe as their more commonly eaten cousins, or spiny lobsters, which lack the big claws that American eaters prize.

Sea Forager-California Sustainable Seafood
Kirk Lombard, founder of Sea ForagerCourtesy of Kirk Lombard

Lombard proselytizes fishes like herring, which are plentiful in the San Francisco Bay, but not consumed here as they are in cities like Amsterdam, where the Dutch snack on them like hot dogs. But unlike legally-tolerated marijuana, that innovation has failed to catch on in the United States. In 2017, the most recent year for which complete data is available, just $ 196 worth of herring was caught commercially in California–all of it in Los Angeles–while $ 14,884 worth of herring roe was harvested in San Francisco. Those are rounding errors compared to the state’s major fish industries. By contrast, market squid landings totaled $ 68 million in revenue, Dungeness crab $ 47 million, Chinook salmon $ 4.8 million, swordfish revenue totaled $ 3.9 million, and bigeye tuna $ 3.5 million.

California’s seafood, in other words, might as well swim in two different oceans, says Dave Colpo, senior program manager at the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission. On the one side, there are industrial-scale trawlers that catch things like whiting and pollack destined for the freezer aisle and fast food sandwiches. “You can’t imagine how much gets pumped off those boats.” On the other are the mid-scale boats that fish for Dungeness crab and salmon, as well as the smaller outfits that catch everything else. “Urchin is not the McDonald’s of fish,” he says with a laugh.

Is Seaweed the Next Big Thing?

And if urchin is boutique, what does that make seaweed? For Catherine O’Hara, it’s the next big thing. In 2017, she and two other women founded Salt Point Seaweed, harvesting wild seaweed from the Mendocino Coast and selling it to restaurants and directly to consumers. They gather kombu, wakame, and nori–seaweeds that O’Hara thinks pass a tough test: “They’ve been around for long enough in mainstream culture that preschoolers are hooked on them.”

The numbers bear her out. In 2015, the most recent year for which the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has data available, the commercial edible algae harvest reached 27 metric tons. In 1997, when the state began keeping that data, the amount was less than five metric tons.

In addition to wild harvesting, O’Hara is exploring farmed seaweed. This year, she completed a pilot project with Hog Island Oyster Co. in Tomales Bay, in which she grew red algae similar to that served in poke bowls, alongside the cultivated oysters.

Turns out that farming the two species together can bring significant benefits. One of the big threats to shellfish from climate change is ocean acidification, the decrease in pH caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the water. When the water turns too acidic, it can eat away shells, killing oyster larvae before they develop.

Enter the seaweed. “Just like most plants on earth take out of the air, seaweed takes carbon and nitrogen out of the water,” says O’Hara. “In the water right now, there’s too much carbonic acid.” Over the last year, their experimental plot of seaweed pulled some of that carbon out of the water, lessening the damage to the oysters.

It’s an alternative model of how seafood might be harvested from the Pacific Ocean in the future. Now all that remains is to see whether consumers will catch up.

This is why Macau should be your next destination in Asia

Macau has been widely overlooked in comparison to many other regions and actually has a whole lot to offer. When people say they want to travel to China, they’re often referring to Hong Kong, which as a famous city has a lot to offer, but it’s fame and popularity have often dwarfed the reputation of other surrounding regions. Macau is incredibly advanced and built up, with an incredible mixture of extra-cultural influences that create the unique place it is today. Here’s why you should forget anywhere else in Asia you were planning to go and go here instead.

Macau

UNESCO World Heritage Site

There’s nothing we love more than a heritage site, as it highlights a significant cultural symbol in the world. It has a complex history but was once the home of a sophisticated trading network that hosted countries from all over the world. This site is held as a symbol of the specific relationship that China and Portugal had over this territory. UNESCO outline how this is a symbol is a reminder of inter-cultural exchange and resilience. It’s a pillar of cultural blending and tolerance, and the surroundings exemplify this by showing Buddhist temples and Catholic churches next to each other.

Blended culture

Macau was a Portuguese territory as a result of the Ming dynasty leasing the land as a trading post. This was all the back in 1557, and the territory was only returned to the Chinese governing body in 1999 under the agreement that the embed rules and culture would be maintained for 50 years. The Portuguese influence is evident within the architecture, and it is still strong today. However, Macau was then free to run its economy, and since 1999 has rapidly developed and it is now one of the world’s most prominent resort cities, with a money gaming industry that rivals Las Vegas.

Amazing adventures

Macau isn’t just a city, and it also offers some of the most thrilling activities such as bungee jumping from the Macau tower, skywalking along it or taking a turbojet ferry. There is so much to do there; it’s practically impossible to get bored. Aside from the thrill rides, there are also some more, calmer, more inspiring experiences to be had. You can go on a dolphin watching cruise or go to see the House of Dancing Water show, either will be an incredible experience.

It is rich

Not only is it rich, but it is actually the wealthiest city in Asia, which is insane but it doesn’t end there. Macau has been speculated to eventually knock Qatar out as the richest place in the world and take the top spot! This is due to the recent developments and their ability to control their own economy.

Macau

Their food is amazing

They have some seriously unique food creations, one of these is their world-famous egg tarts. These are a Portuguese influence but are an incredible experience you cannot miss out on. After all, when you go traveling it’s always best to try the native food rather than western recreations.

So, hopefully, Macau will be next on your list of places to go visit, just remember to find those egg tarts!

How Arya’s Scene With the Hound May Hint at Her Next Big Kill on Game of Thrones

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8.

After rejecting Gendry’s proposal and turning down the chance to become the Lady of Storm End, Arya left Winterfell with the Hound to ride south to King’s Landing. And as everyone’s favorite traveling duo began their latest road trip, it seemed like Game of Thrones may have been hinting at who Arya’s next big kill could be.

After the Hound indicated that he was headed to the capital to finally confront his brother, the Mountain, for holding his face in fire as a child, both the Hound and Arya admitted that they had no intention of returning to Winterfell.

“I don’t plan on coming back,” the Hound told her. “Neither do I,” she responded.

Fans have long suspected that the Hound and the Mountain would eventually face off in a fight to the death that has been preemptively dubbed “Cleganebowl.” The Mountain also holds one of the top spots on Arya’s kill list for torturing and killing people at Harrenhal while Arya was imprisoned there. In fact, he was one of the three remaining targets that Arya named — in addition to Cersei and Walder Frey — after admitting to the Waif in season 6 that she had taken the Hound off the list.

And considering how much emphasis they’ve put on the bond between Arya and the Hound this season, it seems like Thrones may be setting up a possible two vs. one fight in which the Hound sacrifices himself to protect Arya from the Mountain before Arya kills the Mountain.

Arya and the Hound meet again in Game of Thrones season 8 episode 2
Helen Sloan/HBOArya and The Hound sharer a moment in Game fo Thrones season 8 episode 3.

The Hound asking Arya if she would leave him to die again if he gets hurt seems like further foreshadowing that this could be the direction things are headed. Arya’s kill list has also been one of the show’s most enduring plot devices, but since she ended up being the one to kill the Night King, it seems unlikely that she will also be the one to kill Cersei. Therefore, the Mountain is a perfect person to bring Arya’s story full circle.

Thom Solo Has Put Lady Gaga and Britney Spears in 10-Inch Heels. Next: Your Feet

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Photo Courtesy Thom Solo

Thom Solo put on his first pair of heels in 1995. He was a 5-year-old boy growing up in Newton, Massachusetts. Solo cannot remember the exact brand—“it probably doesn’t even exist anymore”—but he is sure they were a pair of suede fuchsia pumps.

Suddenly a few inches taller, Solo sprinted out of his mother’s closet, running down the stairs and all around the house. “Well, it was more of a Clydesdale run,” Solo told The Daily Beast. A clunky stride, for sure, but he does not remember falling.

Solo had graduated to his mother’s pumps after first obsessing over jelly sandals at age 2. “My mom knew how badly I wanted them, so I think we spent 11 hours of journeying around trying to find a pair,” he recalled. Once they managed to scoop the jellies, “I don’t think I took those shoes off until my feet exploded out of them.”

California Is Next Up To Take On Hair Discrimination With The “Crown Act”

Beautiful woman with curly hair smiling

Source: Jacqueline Veissid / Getty

California lawmakers are in the beginning process of ending discrimination against persons who wear their hair in traditional natural styles, such as afros, braids and dreadlocks.

A new bill titled the “Crown-Act” or SB188, would make it illegal for employers to participate or enforce workplace policies which determine how Black employees and employees of color, choose to wear their hair, according to KABC-TV.

The bill is supported by California Sen. Holly Mitchell who sports sisterlocks, a natural style derived from dreadlocks but separated in smaller portions. Mitchell represents the 30th Senate District, which includes Culver City, Ladera Heights, Westmont, Crenshaw, Downtown, and Florence, well-known Black neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Mitchell has served in her role for almost six years.

“There are any number of court cases that we’ll talk about in judiciary committee that will suggest it is a problem for employees across this country and across the state,” Mitchell said.

The bill follows a recent surge in lawmakers taking a vested interest in hair discrimination, as the laws disproportionately affect Black people. In February, New York City introduced guidelines which would give legal discourse to those who have been either harassed, punished, or terminated from their positions by wearing natural hair styles.

As we know in recent national cases surrounding the issue, Black employees and military service members have been discriminated against the way they chose to wear their hair, which in many times is the way it grows out of their head.

Workplace practices have long determined respectability based on European beauty standards. And unfortunately the shame and practice of hair discrimination starts even before the workplace, and is not limited to gender.

In January, a New Jersey teen was forced to cut his dreadlocks before he was allowed to participate at a wrestling event. Video of the incident went viral and sparked discussions regarding the pervasiveness of hair discrimination.

Why you should consider couch surfing for your next vacation

It’s fair to say that Airbnb changed the way we travel, and how we stay during said travel! Hotel rooms were becoming mundane, holiday apartments soulless, a change was needed. People wanted a more authentic experience when they stayed somewhere, and this is what gave rise to the popularity of Airbnb – renting a stranger’s home for the duration of your stay.

There is no question that Airbnb has taken the world of travel and tourism by storm, and it has certainly made vacations more authentic and enjoyable. But, accommodation options don’t end there, oh no! There is a whole new world developing for modern travelers, and it’s known as couchsurfing. So, let’s find out more about this growing trend, and how you can make the most of it.

So what is couchsurfing?

Couchsurfing, in layman’s terms, is staying on a couch (usually an actual bed) in someone’s home, as opposed to getting your own room. Think Airbnb, but a much more stripped back version. Instead of renting out someone’s home, you basically sleep on their couch instead. It’s a great way to meet new people in the place you’re traveling to, and is perfect for short-term trips.

Any costs involved?

One of the main questions you are most likely to have is whether or not there are any costs involved in couchsurfing. Well, in fact, the whole process is free, but that’s not to say there isn’t some sort of unwritten rule that you should offer some kind of token. Cooking dinner, buying your host a few drinks, or giving a gift is certainly something that you can (and should) do for your host by way of recompense.

You can get involved both ways

Something that you’ll really love about couchsurfing is that you can get involved both ways. As a traveler, this is definitely something you are going to want to check out for your next vacation. You can enter dates and locations for your travel, and people will be able to offer you places to stay. However, it is also something that you can get involved with as a host, even when not traveling. Offering your couch or spare room is a great way of helping someone out, and making new friends at the same time as well.

Some of the benefits

Cynthia Bailey and sportscaster Mike Hill have been dating for almost a year now. (The two went public with their relationship in August of 2018.) And after a divorce that played out on reality television, you might think that Bailey might be cool on the marriage tip.

But a recent appearance on “The Real,” seems to prove that she’s ready to take that dive once again.

Bailey told the women that marriage is in her future.

Loni: Is there a date set for the wedding?

Cynthia: Well , I want to marry this man. I love this man. We have time. When Mike is ready and when God is ready, that’s when we will get married. However, I do predict that Mike and God will be ready sometime next year. Praise God! You know it’s crazy, we talk about it all the time. I’ve been married before, Mike has been married before. These 10 Tips Can Give You a Leg Up in Your Next Job Interview

Just the words “job interview” can strike fear into the hearts of the average job seeker.

What should you wear? How can you research the company? What should you say — and avoid saying?

But if you know how to prepare for a job interview, you’ll have the confidence you need to ace the process, and you’ll be more likely to hear the words, “You’re hired.”

How to Prepare for a Job Interview

It all starts with first impressions. You can make a good one before you ever walk in the door by researching the company you’re applying to.

1. Seek Information on the Company

A wealth of information is available online. Start with the business’s website and Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn pages.

You can also sign up for company newsletters and emails, and follow any influencers at the organization who can keep you up to date.

You should be ready with stories from your professional life that demonstrate the company’s core values, such as collaboration, leadership, teamwork and integrity, says Jill MacFadyen, a career coach and former recruiter who works with clients nationwide.

“You’re demonstrating that you care enough to have done the research,” she says. “You’re setting yourself apart from the other people who are interviewing.”

Search newspapers, magazines and specialty journals to see whether the company or the industry have been in the news recently. You’ll be a step above the competition if you know the latest trends and developments.

“In my opinion, you can never overprepare,” says Carlota Zimmerman, a New York City career coach with more than a decade of experience. “I cannot stress how much passion and preparation you should bring.”

2. Do Your Homework on the Interviewers

A woman looks at her laptop while relaxing at home in the dark.

Prior to your job interview, ask for the names of the people who will interview you, and search online to see whether you have any mutual friends or connections. You may also be able to get information about those who work in the department from the company’s website or LinkedIn.

Did you or one of your colleagues or friends previously work at the same organization? Go to the same school? Belong to any mutual clubs or groups? Check alumni networks, LinkedIn and community pages. You’re likely to score points if a current employee can recommend you.

“There’s a notion that this person has been vetted in some way,” says Mike Gellman, CEO and founder of High Five Career Coaching in Irvine, California. “There’s a level of trust there.”

Once you’ve done your research, study the job description and think about how your skills, knowledge and personality mesh with the duties the position requires. Have examples ready from your education and work experience that show you have what it takes to succeed.

Have you won any awards in the field? Did you attend seminars or read books that could help you stand out as well-informed and committed to the brand or industry?

It’s particularly important to explain how you helped your previous employers and clients turn a profit and attract new customers. Stress your achievements in concrete, measurable terms, such as, “I signed on 50 clients last year and brought in $ 250,000.”

Consider doing a mock interview with a friend to sharpen your responses.

3. Clean Up Your Social Media Profile

Most recruiters look at your LinkedIn profile, and some also comb Facebook and other social media. So make sure your pages reflect the image you want to convey.

“It’s about judgment,” Gellman says. “It’s about character for the company. Could this person be a good ambassador for us?”

More than two dozen states have laws prohibiting employers from asking for applicants’ social media usernames and passwords, while federal law prohibits employers from making hiring decisions based on factors such as religion, disability and pregnancy. Accordingly, some companies have stopped monitoring candidates’ social-media accounts to avoid potential discrimination lawsuits.

But many companies still do check. You can protect yourself by avoiding posting photos of anything you’d be embarrassed to have a recruiter discover — or at least adjusting your social media settings to private. And remember: Nothing is absolutely private on the internet.

4. Dress Professionally

A professionally dressed young woman looks in a mirror.

Even if you’re interviewing at a startup where the employees dress in flip-flops and shorts, you need to dress like, well, you’re on a job interview. That means professional and conservative relative to the industry. If you wear a jacket and find you’re overdressed, you can always remove it after you arrive.

“You have to convey a message that you’re serious about the job,” Gellman says. “And if you go in casually, you’re not going to convey that message.”

A good rule of thumb is to dress a level or two above the position you’re seeking, he says.  Make sure your clothes fit and are clean and wrinkle-free — no stains, rips or pet hair — and that your shoes are in good shape.

“Err on the side that your grandmother would look at your outfit and say, ‘You look so professional,’” Zimmerman says.

5. Turn Off Your Cell Phone

To prepare for a job interview adequately, you must turn off your cell phone — or, better yet, leave it in your car. It’s too easy to reflexively reach for a phone that pings or vibrates. When Gellman was interviewing applicants in his role at a previous employer, the ones who texted during the interview — yes, it really happened — were immediately disqualified.

If you have to wait before you’re called in, bring a magazine or a book to read that’s relevant to the industry.

“These kinds of things may seem kind of corny and stuck up,” Zimmerman says. “Well, that’s corporate America. That’s what they want.”

6. Treat Everyone With Respect

Two men at an office shake hands.

Smile and greet everyone you meet politely, from the receptionist to the CEO; your behavior very well may be reported to the hiring manager, especially if it’s disrespectful.

Never use profanity, even if your interviewer cusses a blue streak. Sit up straight and don’t fidget. If your interviewer takes or makes a phone call that interrupts the process, just wait patiently. If you complain or get angry, it will be game over.

“They’re trying to get a feel for how you’d be every day in [the] office,” Zimmerman says.

7. Show You’re Serious

Write down key points you want to get across so you don’t forget them, and store that piece of paper or notebook in a business-appropriate binder or folder so you can access it easily. Remove any extraneous items from your (clean) pocketbook or (polished) briefcase so you’re not rummaging around to find the essentials.

Bring at least half a dozen copies of your resume on quality paper (even if you sent it electronically) and, if applicable, a portfolio of your work. Not everyone may have had time to review your credentials. You’ll also want a functioning pen so you can jot down any questions you have for the interviewer.

Basic black-on-white business cards with a simple email address containing your name — and no cutesy monikers such as “iheartkittens” — are a nice touch.

“It’s a great way to symbolize, ‘I’m serious. I’m here to get this job. I’m ready to do business. I’m so excited for this opportunity,’” Zimmerman says.

8. Arrive Early

It’s a good idea to do a dry run of your trip to the interview site up to a week in advance, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area or exact location. You’ll flub your chances if you’re late, so make sure you anticipate how much traffic you’ll encounter, where you’ll park and how long the door-to-door process will take.

Gellman says he made the mistake once of arriving only two minutes before the start of an interview on a windy day and didn’t notice that his hair was sticking up. It stayed that way for the entire interview, and nobody gave him a (drumroll) heads-up.

Allow enough time for unexpected glitches and for a stop in the restroom, where you should give your hair, face and clothes a final once-over. Be ready for show time 10 minutes before your appointment.

9. Write Thank-You Notes

Thank everyone who interviews you for their time. Then after the interview, hand write (or type) thank-you notes and send them out within 24 to 48 hours. Email is acceptable, but an old-fashioned mailed card will distinguish you.

Concentrate on the person who will be making the hiring decision, but if you interviewed with a panel or series of employees and want to send notes to more than one person, say something unique to each one, Gellman advises.

“It starts to build a relationship, demonstrates you’re making the extra effort, and you’re really interested,” he says. “It’s classy.”

Finally, line up references if you haven’t already provided them. You want to be ready if you’re asked for names.

10. Picture Yourself Succeeding

It’s the night before your moment of truth. You’ve done your research on how to prepare for a job interview. You’ve picked out the clothes you’ll wear. Your briefcase is packed. Now it’s time to relax.

Stand up straight and take some deep breaths. Envision yourself greeting your interviewer with confidence, warmth, good eye contact, a clear voice and a pleasantly firm handshake (no spraining the interviewer’s hand, please). Visualize yourself nailing the interview.

Then do something you enjoy to wind down. That may mean watching a fun movie, doing some light reading or taking a warm bath or shower.

Then, get to sleep early enough to feel rested in the morning.

“The fact that you got an interview means you’ve done something right,” Zimmerman says. “Relax. Eat a good breakfast and believe in yourself. And then it’s up to the universe.”

People track when talkers say ‘uh’ to predict what comes next

Speakers tend to say ‘uh’ before uncommon words (‘uh… automobile’) rather than common words (‘car’). In a new eye-tracking study, researchers show that listeners use this information to predict an uncommon word upon hearing ‘uh.’ Moreover, when an ‘atypical’ speaker says ‘uh’ before common words (‘uh… car’), listeners learn to predict common words after ‘uh’ — but only with a native speaker.

Blackface, Rape Allegations: What the Hell Comes Next in Virginia?

Steve Helber/AP/REX/Shutterstock

It was a Wednesday in Richmond. The Ralph Northam story had quieted down and the Justin Fairfax saga was hanging fire. It was crazy, sure, but nothing too crazy that we weren’t all going back to talking about Donald Trump. And then, boom: the state’s attorney general, Mark Herring, admitted to wearing “brown makeup” to dress like Kurtis Blow back when he was in college.

This seemed to cap a mind-blowing series of events that have unfolded in the commonwealth since last Friday. A quick review:

First, as we know, Governor Ralph Northam was outed as wearing blackface (or a KKK robe) in 1984. At the time everybody said hey, no problem, let’s just make him resign, and we’ll have an actual African American as governor, and someone everyone likes and who took a strong stand against Confederate statuary to boot.

What’s Next for the Feminist Resistance?

The full-length version of this post appears in the Daily Hampshire Gazette. Republished with author permission.

I teach courses at Smith College on women’s rights and feminist movements; over the last two years, my students and I have closely followed the Trump administration’s aggressive rollback of women’s rights.

With increasing urgency, we have studied the erosion of women’s reproductive rights and the attack on protections against rape and sexual harassment on college campuses. We are appalled at the refusal of Congress to renew the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which funds critical services for women fleeing intimate partner violence. At the same time, seeing the explosion of new feminist activism has been exhilarating and inspiring.

The Women’s Marches, #MeToo and Indivisible activism have transformed the political landscape—and contributed to the historic 2018 midterm election returns, in which record numbers of women ran and won political office.

As we head into the challenge of the national elections in 2020—when we will also celebrate the 100th year of women’s right to vote—I spoke to Katherine Spillar, executive editor of Ms. magazine and executive director of the Feminist Majority Foundation, about what role feminists played in the 2018 results, and how we can continue expanding on our victories.

What impact did feminists have on the elections?

The energy released by the historical Women’s Marches of 2017 and 2018 helped to produce a flood of new candidates and activists. Women’s rights organizations, including Feminist Majority, made massive efforts to elect feminist women to federal and state office. Feminist candidates in Congressional races shifted the balance of power in the U.S. House, accounting for over 60 percent of Democrats’ gains. Democratic candidates earned 8.8 million more votes than Republicans and won 43 seats in the House for a net gain of 40 seats. In hard-fought contests across the country, feminists defeated longtime incumbents, overcoming massive gerrymandering and voter suppression to flip seat after seat from red to blue. Voter turnout in the midterms was estimated at 50 percent of the voting-eligible population—the highest rate in more than five decades.

You’ve said that we have the most diverse new group of representatives in history. Tell me about that.

The election featured historical breakthroughs: the first Native American women elected to Congress, the first Latinas elected to represent Texas, the first Muslim women elected, and the first Black women to be elected from states in New England, including Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts. Two 29-year-old women won seats in the House—Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York and Abby Finkenauer from Iowa—the youngest women ever elected. Among the newly elected women in the House are teachers and social workers, refugees and veterans, lawyers, former state legislators, experts on the homeless crisis, early childhood education and human trafficking; healthcare professionals; and a mother who lost her teenage son to gun violence. A pediatrician will be the only woman among 16 doctors in Congress. You can read the latest issue of Ms. magazine and Ms. online for detailed information about amazing new feminists in Congress.

The presence of more women in Congress will have important impacts on policy debates, given their different backgrounds and varied life experiences. They will bring much-needed perspectives and ideas to the ensuing battles over health care, reproductive rights, gun reform, immigration, the environment, voting rights, sexual harassment and assault, LBGTQ rights, budget priorities, military spending and foreign policy. They will hold the line for women’s rights, stopping the reactionary attacks in Washington.

How did women and feminists do at the state level?

Wins for women were massive in state legislatures as well. Record numbers of women ran and won. When the dust had settled, we totaled 2,112 women elected to the 7,383 state legislative seats at stake. These women, by far mostly Democrats, will join those from states without legislative elections in 2018 to total 2,019 or at least 28 percent of state legislative seats, smashing previous records and bringing about the largest electoral gain in more than a decade. Both the Nevada Assembly and Colorado House of Representatives will be gender balanced, with nearly equal numbers of women and men. Nevada actually has a majority female legislature—the first in the country.

Feminist women also did well in statewide races, winning governorships in Maine, Kansas, Michigan and New Mexico. Women took office as secretaries of state in Colorado, Arizona and Michigan, and attorneys general in Michigan, New York, and Delaware. In a first, all statewide executive offices in Michigan—governor, attorney general and secretary of state—are now held by women.

At the state level, public education was a major motivating issue for voters in state legislative races. Following teacher strikes and walkouts over cuts in education funding and inadequate teacher pay in states like Oklahoma, West Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado and Arizona, public school teachers ran for elective office in record numbers. More than 80 of the 200 members of the American Federation of Teachers who ran were elected to state legislatures.

Was there a gender gap in voting patterns?

Yes. The gender gap in voting was as great as any election in the past 20 years. According to the national Edison Research exit poll, 59 percent of women voted for Democratic House candidates in races across the country, compared to 47 percent of men, a 12-point gender gap. Among young women 18 to 29 years old, 67 percent voted Democratic versus 32 percent who voted Republican. The gender gap is driven by the different perspectives men and women hold on a range of issues—for example, the role of government in ensuring access to health care, including abortion and birth control, and social safety net programs like supplemental food support (SNAP). And, issues like sexual harassment and the role of military action versus diplomacy in our foreign policy. These differences in views drive voting preferences, and have only grown over time to become decisive in determining the outcome of race after race.

What are your hopes for the new Congress?

Self-avowed feminist Nancy Pelosi is again speaker of the house, second in line to the presidency and the most powerful woman in government. Pelosi has said she intends to make women’s issues a priority, pushing forward long-stalled legislation to address the wage gap and sexual harassment, reauthorizing VAWA, defending the ACA, addressing the environment, and blocking further rollbacks in voting rights and civil rights. Rep. Nita Lowey from New York will chair the powerful Appropriation Committee and will also play a key role in these issues. She has listed among her priorities increasing funding for child care and early education programs and blocking Republican efforts to reduce spending on family planning.

With Brett Kavanaugh and a far-right conservative majority on the Supreme Court, women’s rights are more at risk than ever. What can be done to protect those rights?

We need to finally ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). We are already gearing up for the off-year elections in 2019 for the Virginia state legislature that will, in all probability, be crucial for ratifying the ERA. Early in 2017, Democrats gained control of the Nevada House and Senate, and ratified the ERA. Then, in May of 2018, the Illinois House and Senate ratified the ERA. As of now, 37 of the 38 states required to amend the Constitution have ratified the ERA. Virginia could become the 38th and final state needed to add the ERA to the Constitution. There are also strong ERA movements in North Carolina and Arizona. The ERA was first sent to the states for ratification in 1972. A resolution to remove the arbitrary deadline imposed by Congress has been introduced in this session of Congress, as was a start-over ERA resolution.

More and more people are understanding the need for the ERA. The ERA would elevate the level of scrutiny the courts would apply in assessing whether government laws or policies have a discriminatory impact on the basis of sex. It would prevent the President or Congress from passing discriminatory laws or enacting discriminatory policies. For example, right now the Trump Administration is pushing to enact a policy to allow employers to deny their female employees coverage of birth control in insurance policies. An ERA could be used to fight these kinds of harmful and discriminatory policies. The ERA could also be used to ensure local law enforcement agencies do not discriminate against women in responding to crimes of violence like domestic violence and rape; for example, failing to process rape evidence kits in a timely manner, or failure to enforce restraining orders in domestic violence cases.

What are your hopes for the future?

Women now constitute just 23.6 percent of members of Congress (106 Democrats and 20 Republicans). Going into the midterms, the U.S. ranked No. 103 worldwide in women’s representation in government. We still have a long way to go. But the midterms have given us tremendous momentum. Propelled by women of color, young women and college-educated women, and women’s collective victories in Congress, state legislatures and statewide offices have laid the groundwork for even larger gains in 2020. It shows that flooding the ticket with feminist candidates, including challenging incumbents in districts that would otherwise seem impossible, is one of the critical paths to equal representation. The feminist movement must stay focused on achieving equal representation, if the policies, laws, and programs — at every level of government — are to meet the needs of half of the population and ensure all of us can enjoy equal protection under the laws of our country.

Next 3 Exciting Family Adventures: 'Dumbo,' 'Detective Pikachu,' 'Aladdin'

Directed by Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), The Kid Who Would Be King is a swashbuckling family adventure that rated highly with critics, as noted at Rotten Tomatoes. Sadly, it hasn't fared as well at the box office, though; more people turned out in theaters over this past weekend for Glass, The Upside and Aquaman.

Still, the potential audience for family-friendly adventures remains incredibly large, so the question becomes: which forthcoming live-action productions will grab the…

This Company Will Help You Finance up to $100K for Your Next DIY Project

DIY projects are a fabulous way to save money. After all, why pay outlandish prices to hire a carpenter or handyman if you can just do it yourself?

Still, even DIY projects cost a little money. You’ll need tools and paint and supplies. Also, you’ll need extra supplies for when you inevitably make a mistake. (Whoops! It’s OK; that’s all part of the process.)

Even if you’re not paying through the nose for professional help, DIY projects typically involve purchasing things like paint, paintbrushes, wood, laminate flooring, sealant, ceramic tile or whatever.

A trip to Lowe’s or Home Depot or Ikea can quickly run into the hundreds or thousands of dollars.

What’s a good way to come up with that money?

What to Watch: Up Next for Fur Industry, Furriers

Last year was a momentous one for designer labels vowing to go fur-free. Michael Kors, Gucci, Burberry and Versace are among the ones that did so. Whether the trend continues into 2019 is a matter up for debate — as is the entire “fur” or “no fur” issue.
Last month, Chanel joined the antifur brigade — although the brand’s use of fur has always been minimal — and also pledged to stop using exotic skins. Before its pre-fall Métiers d’Art show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chanel said it would “no longer use exotic skins in our future creations.”
The exotic skins in question include crocodile, lizard, snake and stingray. Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel fashion and president of Chanel SAS, said, “The future of high-end products will come from the know-how of what our atelier is able to do.”
Michael Kors Inc. — now called Capri Holdings — was one of the leading brands that agreed to go fur-free in 2017 along with Jimmy Choo, which Kors also owns. Kors had been targeted by animal rights activists over the years (most noticeably during a Q&A with the designer in June at the Metropolitan Museum). Elizabeth Warren Takes the Next Big Step in Running for President

Jonathan Bachman/Reuters

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) on Monday morning announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee, taking a major step toward what now seems like an inevitable bid for the White House.

In making the move, Warren leapfrogs other potential candidates in the Democratic field who have hinted at running but have not taken as concrete a step to doing so. The Massachusetts Democrat just won her second term in the Senate in November. And though she was widely expected to announce a presidential bid, her announcement places her further along than others in the progressive lane, most notably Sen. Bernie Sanders.

In a letter to her email list—which is widely regarded as one of the largest in Democratic politics—Warren portrayed her decision as an extension of her life story, one that saw her emerge from a poor upbringing in Oklahoma to the heights of academia at Harvard, to the top stage in national politics, first as a champion of consumer rights and then as a senator.

Nurse Alice: America’s Next Top Model Dies of Breast Cancer at 34

On Dec. 4, 2018, Jael Strauss gave her last breath—ending her battle with stage 4 breast cancer. Strauss had been a contestant on season eight of Tyra Bank’s America’s Next Top Model, was of African American (mother) and Jewish (father) descent, and only 34 years old.

On Oct. 4, she announced her diagnosis in a Facebook post. “I was gonna write some long thing but some of you guys deserve to know, On October 2nd I was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. It has aggressively spread throughout my body and is incurable,” she wrote. “With treatment it may prolong my life longer than the ‘few months’ doctors said I could make it. I don’t want to die. I need another one of those miracles that I got back in 2013.”

Following her diagnosis, Strauss’ friends set up a GoFundMe page on her behalf to help alleviate some of the medical costs.

At the end of November, Strauss announced that she had entered hospice care. “First night in hospice. So many things I never knew about life. Or death,” she wrote on Facebook. “So many things.”

According to nationally recognized board-certified diagnostic radiologist, Dr. Nina Watson (aka Dr. Nina) who specializes in Women’s Imaging, this is a story she’s seen one too many times. She goes on to say, “although we would like to think that breast cancer in a woman of her age would be unheard of, unfortunately, it is not. According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that 12,770 women in the United States less than 40 years of age were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. Since this is below the age of recommended annual screening for the general population, it is important that all women, but particularly black women, know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and their own personal risk.”

The most common sign of breast cancer is a painless lump. Although most of these lumps will be benign (not cancerous) growths, a woman should have any new lump evaluated by their doctor. Other signs and symptoms would include changes in your skin (new area of thickening or dimpling), changes in your nipple (nipple starting to stick in), or discharge from your nipple (especially if it is bloody). If you notice any of these changes, it is important to be seen by your doctor. Additional testing such as a mammogram or breast ultrasound may be necessary.

There have been important developments in the medical community’s understanding of breast cancer. It is now being recognized that a “one approach fits all” does not apply to breast cancer. While it has been recognized for some time that women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent have an increased risk of breast cancer, it is now being recognized that black women are also at increased risk for the disease. So for Strauss, her risks were greater considering her mixed descent. The American College of Radiology and Society of Breast Imaging are recommending that all women, especially black women, have a risk assessment (calculation of a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer) performed at age 30 to see if early screening for breast cancer is needed.

What’s Next for Calvin Klein Following Raf Simons Split?

The much ballyhooed Calvin Klein-Raf Simons marriage has ended in divorce — and now observers wonder what’s next for the iconic American fashion brand, and whether it can flourish without the “halo” of a designer collection.
As reported, the tie-up between Klein and Simons came to an abrupt — but not unexpected — end Friday night when Calvin Klein Inc. sent out a terse press release at 6:17 p.m., right before the Christmas holiday weekend, stating the company and Simons, who was chief creative officer, had “amicably decided to part ways.” The statement said that Klein has decided on a new brand direction which differs from Simons’ creative vision — but provided no details on what that new direction is.
Calvin Klein will not be having a fashion show during New York Fashion Week in February (it had been scheduled for Feb. 12 at 8 p.m.), and the company will now have to figure out how to move forward after the pricey, multimillion dollar experiment with Simons went bust after a mere 28 months, and eight months before the end of a three-year deal with the Belgian designer.

The best travel trends for the next few years

From electronics to fashion, trends are constantly changing. It’s hard to keep up sometimes, especially when it seems like they change as soon as you’ve embraced the last one. Traveling is no different. Traveling trends alter year on year, including popular destinations, ways to travel, and our favorite activities. Here are some of the trends which are on the rise in travel at the moment. We’re likely to see these get big over the next couple of years.

The world’s natural beauty

One trend which has been on the rise for a number of years is sustainable traveling. Eco-travel involves staying in environmentally friendly locations and enjoying foods and activities which don’t harm nature or animals. Many of these trips are situated in densely populated areas of greenery and wildlife, like jungles and savannahs. These sorts of vacations are immensely enjoyable for nature lovers, seeing as many of the activities include bird watching, trekking, photography, and kayaking. With eco-traveling, you can enjoy a fun trip, while knowing that you’re not contributing to the damage caused to the environment.

Micro trips

Going away for a weekend rather than a couple of weeks has become incredibly popular recently and shows no signs of slowing down, with 53% of global travelers admitting that they’d like to take more micro trips in the coming years. These are a fun and cheaper way to travel, where you can explore different places and activities without spending too much money or taking weeks off of work.

Love for the cold

Supposedly, an up and coming trend is the winter season. It has been predicted that in years to come, winter will become the peak season over summer, where people will enjoy activities like skiing and arctic tours rather than your typical sunbathing and swimming vacations. Some locations are now hosting winter festivals and even reindeer herding trips, so winter traveling is set to become the new craze.

Keeping fit

Wellness traveling includes a range of attractions, such as mountain hikes, cycling, trekking, and sports, and is likely to become much more popular over the next few years. It might be best for you to get in on this trend now, before it takes over the travel industry. These vacations combine exploring new places with getting active, and it’s the perfect way to boost your happiness and health.

Learning while you travel

Volunteering trips are also set to gain popularity, with more people now wanting to help others, while also having fun. Volunteering includes working at animal sanctuaries and helping underdeveloped countries. If you love helping other people and the environment, then a volunteering vacation can be the perfect way to get involved and make a difference to something you’re passionate about.

These travel trends will no doubt become game-changers in the travel industry in the next two or three years, with people becoming more concerned about their health and the environment, as well as wanting to explore something different. They’re fun and innovative ways to travel and could make your next trip the best one yet.

Goddess Skin

‘Gorgeous, glowing skin is never not on trend, but next year it’s all about goddess spa-cleansed skin; think of that “just-stepped-out-of-a-facial” feeling with a replenished, restored and refreshed complexion. I’ve always believed that the key to a beautiful painting lies within creating a beautiful canvas, and that taking care of your skin with every day rituals is essential.

‘I have created a NEW miracle ‘spa-in-a-jar’ duo so everyone can double cleanse with the supernatural powers of a goddess, for perfect spa-cleansed skin at home! The Sun-Kissed Sweep

‘A gorgeous new take on bronzer application as we move away from the heavy contoured cheekbones and into a healthier-looking bronze skin! This is the kind of trend that we love because it’s super wearable, easy to do and instantly makes us look more youthful.

‘The sun-kissed sweep is achieved by taking a matte bronzer across the cheeks and nose, focusing on the apple of the cheeks as opposed to the cheekbones. Then layer a cream highlighter on top to create that candle light glow.’

Pastel Eyes vs a Strong Lip

‘I can see an influx of colour coming onto the make-up scene for SS19. I predict a pastel palette for the eye and strong lip with not much else, just gorgeous balmy skin and natural groomed brows. 2018 was an experimental year for make-up and lots of colour was introduced, not only on the runway but also for everyday women. It’s less of a thing now to wear colour instead of neutrals, though I love how the jewel-toned shades of emerald for the eye have become a major trend on social media!

‘Next year will we will be following on from this with a beautiful makeup colour story… I see an array of fresh rosy pinks, mint pastel greens and baby yellow for the eye. My favourite look would be a pink glaze on the eye with a velvet matte oxblood lip. Divine!’

Caroline Barnes, Max Factor UK Ambassador

Colour Clash

‘Just like the red lip trend took at least a couple of years before all your friends and colleagues adopted the look, the same goes for colour. Many of us have been sporting a neutral style make-up for a while now and bright, bold tones have been edging their way into our make-up bags but only as statement, one-off color blocking.

‘Next year color clash make-up will be a big trend. Think bright orange-based reds matched with soft blended lilac eyes, or peppermint liner matched with diffused sugar pink cheek and lips. The combinations are endless but, most importantly, colour is back with a splash and must be enjoyed to the max – with absolutely no age limits.’

Thea Green, Nails Inc Founder

Gen-Z Yellow

‘We’re hugely backing Gen Z Yellow as the colour for SS19. Bright, happy and zesty, whilst the millennial pink fatigue has really set in, this colour feels fresh and current for the new season.

‘We’re introducing a highly pigmented, sunshine yellow nail paired with a unique pigment bubble jelly shot for a hint of this trend. Our Gen Z nail colour works for every skin tone and is already the favourite nail shade of the entire Nails inc office for next season.’

Claire Mulleady, MAC Global Senior Artist

Colour as an Accessory

‘Viewing make-up elements as an accessory is the way to approach vibrant colour for SS19. Colour works so well when it stands on its own so keeping the skin clean and fresh is key to pulling it off. M·A·C Chromalines (£17) are an easy to paint formula that allows you to express whatever you’re feeling. Become your own artist and mix them together for any colour on the spectrum.

‘It’s about being empowered through colour so choose your hue according to your mood, whether it’s a calming pastel or energy driven primary colour. Give the look a modern lived in feel through smudging, blurring and applying your colours with fingers. Play it bold and keep it bright.’

Why Meteora, Greece should be your next destination

People love to travel, and there is barely a stone left unturned on this Earth. Most of the hidden gems in the world have been discovered, but there might just be one place left that is the complete package and isn’t filled with tourists, yet. Meteora in Greece is largely unknown to the masses, but it should be. Here’s why it should be your next holiday destination.

An alien landscape

With large rock erupting from the ground, green forests, and golden lakes, Meteora can seem completely foreign to people who visit it. It is almost so perfect it looks fake. There are countless rock formations with many of them topped with monasteries. You can explore this landscape by walking, biking, or even climbing.

Adventure paradise

Meteora is actually an adventurer’s paradise as there are endless climbing and hiking opportunities. You can wander off by yourself (or in a group) and discover the land at your own pace. Many tours will give you the tools required to scale the giant rock formations, taking in the Greek destination at a new angle. Besides climbing and hiking, there are also white water rafting opportunities. The Ionas River flows nearby and offers thrillseekers the perfect opportunity to get their adrenaline pumping.

The food

As with pretty much anywhere in Greece, you won’t go hungry as the food is exceptional. Olive lovers rejoice as you’re going to get some of the best varieties produced anywhere in the world. There are plenty of tavernas which offers local cuisines, including moussaka, and there’s loads of halloumi cheese on offer. Grilled meat is a Greek staple, and you’ll be leaving Meteora at least one size larger than when you arrived.

Explore history

The monasteries placed on top of the rocks can be explored, you just need to climb your way to the tops of the giant boulders to see them. You can trace back through time as the monasteries open their doors to the public and there are several folk museums littered around too. The architecture found is a piece of history as these buildings have been crafted from sandstone over hundreds of years. They sit well above sea level and are perfectly preserved for you to get a glimpse of life from centuries ago.

Get low

The attraction of Meteora is not just reaching up to the sky, there are also places to discover below the ground. The Theopetra Cave has shown signs of human life residing inside from at least 100,000 years ago. Archaeologists even found a stone wall built inside that dates back 23,000 years, making it the oldest example of a structure made by man. There is so much history hidden in this Greek location, all you have to do is look and you will discover it.

Meteora is a pretty well-kept secret for now, but the cat’s out of the bag and soon everyone will be checking it out. Make sure it’s your next destination to get ahead of the game.

The Baltimore Orioles will name Chicago Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde their next manager, ESPN has confirmed. The Athletic first reported the news. His responsibilities under Maddon included running spring training over the past several years. Hyde also served as the Cubs’ bench coach in 2014 when Rick Renteria was manager. Hyde interviewed for managerial openings this winter with the Rangers, Twins, Angels and Blue Jays before landing the Orioles job. Do These 11 Things Now to Set Your Finances up for the Next 20 Years

It’s so hard to plan ahead. It’s even harder to plan way, way ahead — like 20 years into the future. I mean, some of us have trouble planning more than a week in advance. I know I do.

Financially speaking, we should all be planning for the future — at least a little bit. The question is, how can you set yourself up for success in the future? What can you do with your money right now that you’ll be happy about in 20 years?

We’ve got some ideas. They’re mostly about improving your financial habits — with a little technological help.

Save Without Thinking About It

woman on phone at night

Automate, automate, automate. Harness technology, and make it do the work for you so that in 20 years, you’ll be prepared for the next step, whether that’s buying a new home, traveling the world or retiring.

Set things up so a certain amount of your money gets automatically funneled into savings, investment and retirement accounts. That way, you can build wealth without thinking about it.

1. Let This App Save for You (and Get $ 5 Free!)

It helps if you can save money without really noticing it.

Digit makes that possible. Link the app to your checking account, and it will determine small (and safe!) amounts of money to withdraw into a separate, FDIC-insured savings account.

Bonus: Penny Hoarders get an extra $ 5 just for signing up. Additionally, savers will receive a 1% bonus every three months. Digit is free to use for the first 30 days, then it’s $ 2.99 per month afterward.

Pro tip: In the long run, you’ll need a smart place to store your savings. There’s no law that requires you to bank the old-fashioned way — at a brick-and-mortar bank with a crummy interest rate on your savings.

An app called Varo Money offers a savings account where you’ll earn 1.35% annual percentage yield. That’s more than 20 times — repeat, 20 times — the average savings account, based on a 0.06% average reported by CNN Money.

2. Invest Your Spare Change

To automate your investments, consider starting an account with Acorns. Use its “round-up” feature. That means if you spend $ 10.23 at the grocery store, 77 cents gets dropped into your Acorns account.

Then, the app does the whole investing thing for you.

The idea is you won’t miss the digital pocket change, and the automatic savings stack up faster than you’d think. For example, we reviewed how Penny Hoarder Dana Sitar was able to save at a rate of $ 420 a year!

The sooner you start investing, the better off you’ll be 20 years from now.

The app is $ 1 a month, and you’ll get a $ 5 bonus when you sign up.

Think About Retirement… Now

senior couple out on the beach

If you have a 401(k) plan through your employer, you should be contributing money to it with every paycheck. If you don’t have one, consider opening an IRA, an individual retirement account. It’s a retirement savings plan you can put money into without going through an employer.

Like with investing, the sooner you start saving for retirement, the better off you’ll be in 20 years.

3. Get a Free Look at the Health of Your 401(k)

If you’re like most people, you have no idea whether you’re on pace for retirement or just sputtering along. Chances are your 401(k) could be doing a lot better.

Take control with help from Blooom, an investment advisory firm that can optimize and monitor your 401(k) for you.

It just takes a few minutes to get a free 401(k) analysis that will show you whether your investments are allocated properly and whether you’re losing money paying hidden investment fees. It’ll even tell you just how much more money your account could earn by the time you want to retire.

After that, if you sign up, it costs $ 10 per month to have Blooom monitor and maximize your 401(k). Bonus: Penny Hoarders get the first month free with the code PNNYHRD.

Manage Your Credit and Debts

man holding credit cards

In the long run, you’ll be in good shape if you maintain good credit and deal with your debts. If you’re smart and strategic about this now, it’ll pay dividends over the next couple of decades.

4. Get Your Credit Under Control

Keeping tabs on your credit score and your credit reports can help guide you to a financially healthier life — especially if you use a free credit-monitoring service like Credit Sesame. It gives you personalized suggestions for improving your credit.

The better your credit, the better off you’ll be when you’re getting a home or car loan. Credit Sesame can estimate how big a mortgage you might qualify for, for example.

Here’s our ultimate guide to using Credit Sesame.

5. Kill off High-Interest Debt

Most of us have got debt — student loans, car loans, credit cards, maybe a mortgage. But not all debt is created equal.

Be strategic. Pay down your high-interest debts first (while still paying the minimum balances on all your other debts).

That way, you’ll spend significantly less money on interest payments over the long run. As the years pass, your high-interest debts should start to disappear. In 20 years, you shouldn’t have any.

This is commonly called the debt avalanche method.

Your highest-interest debts are probably your credit cards. And at the bottom of the list? Probably your federal student loans, which tend to come with favorable interest rates and flexible repayment options.

6. Lower Your Interest Rates

Target that credit card debt first. A lot of us are being crushed by credit card interest rates north of 20%. If you’re in that boat, consolidation and refinancing might be worth a look. Pay off your high-interest debt with a lower-interest personal loan

Here’s an easy way to do that: Fiona, a search engine for financial services, can match you with the right personal loan to meet your needs.

Fiona searches the top online lenders to match you with a personalized loan offer in less than 60 seconds. Its platform can help you borrow up to $ 100,000 (no collateral needed) with fixed rates starting at 4.99% and terms from 24 to 84 months.

Establish a Budget-Conscious Lifestyle

interior of a car in new york city

We’re not asking you to radically change your life. That’s not realistic. You don’t have to suddenly start living like a monk or anything.

Still, to set up your finances for the next 20 years, it’d be smart to establish some new habits.

7. Cut Your Food Budget

Groceries will be a huge part of your budget for the long run, so it’s worth taking a few steps to shop smarter. Here are our favorite tricks to save money on groceries:

  • Look for free printable coupons.
  • Compare your local grocery prices using this worksheet.
  • Earn cash back. Ibotta pays you cash-back on purchases if you take pictures of your grocery store receipts. Plus, you’ll get a $ 10 bonus for signing up!

8. Spend Less on Car Insurance

Car insurance will likely be a constant expense for you. That’s why it’s worth shopping around for a new policy every now and then. (Most people don’t bother.)

Just like you compare the prices of flights, shoes and laptops before purchasing, why not compare car insurance?

The Zebra, an online car insurance search engine that offers “insurance in black and white,” compares your options from 204 providers in less than 60 seconds.

9. Look Into Life Insurance

Because we’re thinking about the long term: If you have a family, the last thing you want is to leave them without any financial support once you’re gone.

Maybe you should think about life insurance, which pays your dependents a set amount of money if you die. You might at least look into a basic policy that would pay off your funeral, mortgage or other debt.

Ethos can get you term life insurance in less than 10 minutes — with no medical exam — for coverage up to $ 1 million. Ethos offers a digital application, and customer service is available if you have questions.

Make More Money

interior of an airbnb listing

In 20 years, you’ll want to be making more money. Ultimately, that’s up to you and your career path. In the meantime, we’ve got a couple of shortcuts to help you pad your bank account.

10. Get a Side Gig

To set yourself up for the long term, it helps to have more than one source of income.

Look for ways to earn extra money on the side. Here are a few options:

  • As a partner driver with Uber, you’d be an independent contractor. You’d set your own schedule and drive as much or as little as you want. You must be at least 21, have a valid driver’s license and pass a background check. Your car must be a four-door, registered in-state and covered by in-state insurance.
  • List a guest room on Airbnb, which could help you make hundreds — or thousands — in extra income each month. We’ve discovered you can list just about anything through the platform, including couches and backyard tents.
  • Here’s our guide to making extra money online.
  • Here’s our beginner’s guide to earning passive income.

11. Use a Rewards Credit Card

To earn a little extra cash, look at getting a rewards credit card. The rewards can really add up over time.

For instance, an option like the Chase Freedom Unlimited card* enables you to earn an unlimited 1.5% cash back on all your purchases. (Hello, grocery store!) Plus, if you spend $ 500 in your first three months of opening the card, you’ll pocket a $ 150 bonus.

Keep in mind that there are different types of rewards credit cards, so make sure to get the kind that works best for you:

  • Cash back credit cards are the simplest, because they just give you a portion of your spending back as a rebate.
  • Travel rewards cards offer miles, flights, hotel stays, car rentals and more.

Here’s our basic primer on rewards credit cards, and here’s our list of nearly 40 ways you can increase your earnings from your rewards cards.

No matter what, make sure to pay off your bill each month so you’re not paying interest on a balance.

Why the balkans should be your next destination

Taking its name from the Balkan Mountains, this part of Southeast Europe has become more and more popular with travelers in recent times. With a heady mix of different cultures, landscapes, and people, it’s no surprise that tourists are waking up to what the Balkans can offer for an incredible trip. If you’re unsure whether this is the right destination for you, we’re about to change your mind. Here is why the Balkans should be your next destination.

It’s cheaper than the rest of Europe

Compared to the rest of Europe, you’ll find that the Balkans is a far more affordable place to visit. In fact, you can fill your belly here in a fairly nice restaurant for around $ 15 per person. It’s a lot cheaper here because it hasn’t become a tourist hotspot – yet. However, as more and more people realize the potential of a more affordable vacation in Europe, the prices are likely to rise. If you want to make the most out of how cheap it is here, then you definitely need to make your way there pronto. Who can turn down a $ 15 dinner… With drinks?!

It has some of the most beautiful things to see and do

In the Balkans you’ll find some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole of Europe – if not the world. And it doesn’t matter what kind of thing you like to do, because you’ll find something for everyone here. If you’re a history buff then you’ll love wandering around the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia. If you’re an active adventurer then you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to the mountains, fjords, and landscapes that you can hike across. If you love culture, then you won’t be disappointed when it comes to all of the galleries and museums on offer here. There really is something for everyone in the Balkans.

Don’t forget the beaches!

Of course, we couldn’t mention the beautiful scenery of the Balkans without talking about the beaches. If you like sandy beaches and clear blue waters, then this is the place to be – especially in the summer. Greece and Croatia are some of the most popular destinations when it comes to beach vacations, but you should consider thinking outside of the box too. Head to the Albanian Riviera for some hidden gems that you just won’t want to leave. Even countries like Macedonia, which are landlocked, have lakes that put some other countries’ beaches to shame.

The locals are super helpful

As they aren’t often plagued by tourists, you’ll find the locals of the Balkans to be an extremely friendly bunch. In fact, they’re often grateful for visitors and this certainly comes across in the way they are with tourists. Most of the locals are willing to lend you a hand, let you know of secret spots to eat and drink, and just generally welcome you with open arms. This is the kind of place that will quickly feel like home from home, thanks to how incredible the people are.

Surely now you must be convinced to head to the Balkans on your next trip?! It really is a stunning part of the world, that has to be seen to be believed.

Here’s Your Guide to the Movie References in Ariana Grande’s ‘Thank U, Next’ Music Video

Leave it to Ariana Grande to capture the essence of the teen rom-com with her music video for “Thank U, Next.”

In the highly anticipated video released on Friday, Grande pays homage to films like Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, Bring It On and 13 Going on 30 by channeling their sweet storylines. Viewers will even spot some cameos from some of the films’ stars.

The song, which has maintained the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks as of Friday, is a widely discussed self-love anthem that arrived in the wake of much public conversation about Grande’s past romantic relationships. “Thank U, Next” was released just weeks after she and Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson called off their engagement, and two months after Grande’s ex-boyfriend, the rapper and producer Mac Miller, died from an accidental overdose.

In the video, Grande cheekily pokes fun at the public’s curiosity about her personal life, recreating the gossip sequence about queen bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams) in Mean Girls. She also channels Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde), Torrance Shipman (played by Kirsten Dunst in Bring It On) and other pop-culture heroines, employing the references in service to her message about the challenges of moving on after a breakup.

Here, we’ve compiled a handy guide to every movie reference that Ariana Grande squeezed in “Thank U, Next.” You can thank us later.

Mean Girls

Like any true queen bee, Mean Girls takes precedent as the alpha rom-com in “Thank U, Next.” Grande dresses up in full Regina George looks, down to the Louis Vuitton purses, silver initial necklace and long blonde hair. The video’s typography and the song’s original artwork mimic that of the film and, of course, its infamous “Burn Book.”

Additionally, some of the most high-profile cameos in the music video appear during the Mean Girls segments, with Jonathan Bennett returning as high school heartthrob Aaron Samuels and Stefanie Drummond as a major Regina enthusiast. Grande collaborator Troye Sivan appears in the video in a letterman jacket, while YouTube stars Colleen Ballinger and Gabi DeMartino and Grande’s former Victorious co-star, Elizabeth Gillies, round out the crew as Cady Heron and the rest of the Plastics. Kris Jenner makes a delightful appearance as Regina’s “cool mom.”

Legally Blonde

Grande went full valley girl for the Legally Blonde-inspired segments of the music video, where she sported a pink maribou feather Adam Selman tube top that would have warmed the cockles of Elle Woods’ heart. From studying on an orange MacBook Pro while working out on the ellipticals like any hard-working Harvard student to hanging out with the legendary Jennifer Coolidge, who reprises her role as Paulette, Grande portrays a woman ready to keep up with whatever life throws her way.

Luckily, the real Elle Woods has already given it her blessing.

13 Going on 30

Grande made a convincing Jenna Rink crashing the wedding, complete with her Barbie Dream House.

Bring It On

Grande’s been a longtime champion of the high ponytail, so it seems only fitting that she would channel the cheerleaders of Bring It On in “Thank U, Next.” Dressed up in a red cheerleading costume that reads “TUN” for “Thank U, Next” but looks quite similar to the one worn by the Rancho Carne Toros, Grande’s cheer squad faces off the East Compton Lovers, a reference to the beloved Clovers.
