9 Fashion and Beauty Brands Spawned From Original Cast of ‘The Hills’

While it originally aired in the early aughts, MTV’s “The Hills” still holds a soft spot for many Millennials, who are now impatiently waiting for the show’s reboot, called “The Hills: New Beginnings,” set to premiere on June 24.
More than just a cultural moment that gave birth to many famous lines and sage pieces of advice, the show launched a new generation of reality TV stars turned entrepreneurs. Many of the show’s cast have gone on from the show to launch their own companies in the fashion, beauty and wellness spaces, some lucrative — for instance, Emily Weiss’ Glossier Inc., valued at $ 1.2 billion — while others — like Heidi Pratt’s Heidiwood — fell flat.
The show is coming back with some of its fan favorites, including Pratt and her husband, Spencer; Whitney Port and Audrina Patridge, and newcomers, like actress Mischa Barton, who is making her reality TV debut.
Now that MTV is reprising the show, WWD takes a look at all the brands created by “The Hills” current and former cast.

‘The Twilight Zone’ flawlessly translates the spirit of the original series

TwitterFacebook

It’s impossible to overestimate the cultural impact of the original The Twilight Zone

So many lovable elements of current TV — like anthology formats, twist-based plots, and cerebral moral plays — became popular through its success, and they continue to pervade some of the medium’s best efforts to date. Unrelated movies are said to have “Twilight Zone-ish” twists, and its tone is so well known that simply humming its theme song is universal shorthand for “shit’s getting spooky.” Not bad for a show that premiered in the 1950s.

Original ‘Twilight Zone’ stars on what it’s like being in a cult classic

Bill Mumy and Jan Handzlik took different routes in their careers, but they share a common bond: acting in classic episodes of “The Twilight Zone.” Rod Serling’s black-and-white (mostly horror) anthology series, which originally aired on CBS (1959-64), will return Monday in the form of Jordan Peele’s “Twilight Zone” revival, streaming on CBS All Access…

Spotify Aims to Become ‘World’s Leading Audio Platform’ By Building Original Podcast Content

Earlier this week, Spotify announced that it has acquired Parcast, a “premier storytelling-driven” podcast studio that specializes in crime and mystery series. The news comes shortly after the music streaming services acquisitions of Gimlet and Anchor, two other podcast networks.

Spotify has offered the ability to stream podcasts via its app for a while now, but it’s purchasing of three podcast networks and studios means that some of this content will now be developed in-house. Parcast was founded in 2016 and has since become extremely popular, particularly with women, who make up 75% of its audience. Since Parcast launched three years ago it has already developed 18 original series, such as “Unsolved Murders”, “Cult”, “Serial Killers” and “Conspiracy”.

The three recent acquisitions highlight Spotify’s growing desire to move its business model beyond music streaming and instead provide a range of audio content for a wide variety of people. As the CEO Daniel Ek said in a recent blog-post: “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, but what I didn’t know when we launched to consumers in 2008 was that audio — not just music — would be the future of Spotify.”

Parcast’s proven success makes the deal between the two audio companies make sense for Spotify, as it provides little risk and potentially high reward. Over the years podcasts have become integral to millions of people’s daily routines and, as The New York Times points out, podcasts are also cheap to produce and can, therefore, bring in loyal subscribers to Spotify without relying on expensive music licensing rights.

And this is where the real incentive lies: as Owen Grover, the chief executive of Pocket Casts, a podcast app, said: “I don’t think Spotify woke up one day and realized that audio storytelling has some incredible emotional place in the life of their brand. Strategically, if they can get their users to listen to podcasts in place of music, it improves their margins.”

The move also highlights the growing competition between Apple and Spotify as they battle for top spot in the audio streaming business. Apple has so far provided the main international platform for podcasts, but Spotify’s recent expansion shows that it believes it can challenge Apple for this title. Spotify has also recently announced that it aims to spend $ 500 million on podcast-related deals over the next couple of years, so expect the competition to heat up.

New report shares early details about Apple’s first five original TV shows

Apple streaming service

We’re exactly one week away from Apple’s “show time” event at the Steve Jobs Theater, and although the company has yet to share any details about the event, the expectation is that the veil will be lifted on Apple’s streaming service. And now, thanks to a report from The New York Times, we know that five original series are already done filming, and will presumably be ready in time for the launch of the service later this year.

According to the report, five series have wrapped, with “around a half dozen more” on the verge of completion. But the people behind those shows reportedly have not been told when they can expect their shows to debut. All they’ve been told is that their shows will stream on the Apple service “later this year, probably fall.” This has, understandably, given some of the talent cause for concern, especially with a big reveal event just days away.

Adidas Original Unveils Collaboration with Ji Won Choi

TAKE FIVE: New York-based Korean fashion designer Ji Won Choi is the latest emerging talent Adidas Original tapped to design a capsule women’s ready-to-wear collection.
“The idea was to take the very classic Adidas tracksuits and reinterpret it with my aesthetic in five different ways. I took the very iconic Adidas stripes and repeated it everywhere to create a consistent and cohesive visual language and merge it with the sportiness and playfulness of the brand,” Choi explained during the presentation.
The clothes were shown in a huge basement near Camden market during London Fashion Week. A colorful 3D maze was built and models walked up and down on interconnected staircases as in an infinite loop.
Alex Weiland, the director of special projects at Adidas who discovered Choi on Instagram, said it’s “important for us to give a new platform for young designers. London has such an appetite for emerging design talents. So we decide to take her here.”
She said the first drop is slated for Feb. 23 Feb at retailers including Kith, Dover Street Market and Barneys New York. A second drop in a black and white color way will happen in May.

Meet the Original Ebenezer Scrooge

Getty/The Daily Beast

The term “Dickensian” always connotes a kind of plumminess. There is richness in this prose, and richness in the depth of the characters. Even the villains and sad sacks who fund their own misery have a way of doing your soul good.

Of course, we all look to Ebenezer Scrooge at this time of year. That premier skinflint made his debut in 1843, having been conceived in the mind of Charles Dickens while he walked upwards of twenty miles into the Victorian night of his London, the principle seat of his art and a character unto itself in his fiction.

But what you might not know is that nearly a decade before, Dickens had drafted a proto-Scrooge, another character also visited by representatives from the land of spirits who took exception to his wastrel attitude regarding Christmas.

200 ‘Shrek’ fans created a spectacular shot-for-shot remake of the original film

Shrek Retold

As far as movies go, some engender more passion from fans than others, with the Star Wars franchise obviously being one such example. A more recent film franchise that has seemingly created something of a rabid fan base of its own, interestingly enough, is Shrek. In one respect, this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise given that the Shrek films appeal to a wide spectrum of ages. Indeed, the original is something that can be enjoyed equally by adults and kids alike.

In light of the aforementioned Shrek fandom, a group of 200 or so hardcore fans recently banded together to create one of the most bizarre videos you’ve seen in quite some time. Dubbed Shrek Retold, the film is a surreal shot-for-shot remake of the original 2001 film. What makes the film so outlandish is that it’s comprised in a multitude of artistic styles. Specifically, some of the scenes are live action recreations — with actors wearing laughably bad makeup — while other scenes are nothing more than crude animations.

David Attenborough’s latest nature show has a brilliantly original twist

TwitterFacebook

An iguana desperately fleeing a horde of snakes. A bird struggling to find love. A giraffe fending off a lion in a heroic bid for freedom.

When it comes to nature documentaries, it tends to be the individual stories that we remember best. It happened again and again in Planet Earth II and Blue Planet II — an event in the life of one specific creature, combined with the sweetly soothing sound of David Attenborough’s narration, took the internet by storm.

Well, it looks like there’s going to be more where that came from. In the latest BBC David Attenborough documentary series Dynasties, there will be an even greater focus placed on individual stories. Read more…
