Ohio State Team Doctor Abused At Least 177 Men, and Over 20 Officials Knew, Report Says

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — A now-dead Ohio State team doctor sexually abused at least 177 male students from the 1970s through the 1990s, and numerous university officials got wind of what was going on over the years but did little or nothing to stop him, according to a report released by the school Friday.

Dr. Richard Strauss groped or ogled young men while treating athletes from at least 16 sports and working at the student health center and his off-campus clinic, investigators from a law firm hired by the university found.

“We are so sorry that this happened,” Ohio State President Michael Drake said at a news conference, using words like “shocking,” ”horrifying” and “heartbreaking” to describe the findings.

He said there was a “consistent institutional failure” that spanned years, adding that Ohio State — the nation’s third-largest university, with almost 65,000 students and nearly a half-million living alumni — “fell short of its responsibility to its students, and that’s regrettable and inexcusable.”

At the same time, Drake, who has led the institution since 2014, sought to distance Ohio State from what happened more than two decades ago: “This is not the university of today.”

The report on Strauss, who killed himself in 2005 nearly a decade after he was quietly pushed out, could cost Ohio State dearly by corroborating lawsuits brought against it by a multitude of victims.

The findings put Strauss in a league with gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar of Michigan State University, who was accused of molesting at least 250 women and girls and is serving what amounts to a life sentence. Michigan State ultimately settled with his victims for $ 500 million.

Similarly, the Jerry Sandusky child sexual-abuse scandal that brought down legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in 2011 has cost the university more than a quarter-billion dollars in settlements, fines, legal costs and other expenses.

Many of Strauss’ accusers who have spoken publicly said they were masturbated or otherwise touched inappropriately during physical exams or leered at in the locker rooms. Many told investigators that they thought his behavior was an “open secret” and that they believed their coaches, trainers and other team doctors knew was going on.

The students described the examinations as being “hazed” or going through a “rite of passage.” Athletes joked about Strauss’ behavior, referring to him with nicknames like “Dr. Jelly Paws.”

The abuse went on from 1979 to 1997, nearly Strauss’ entire time at Ohio State, and took place ace at various locations across campus, including medical examining rooms, locker rooms, showers and saunas, according to investigators. Strauss, among other things, forced student patients to strip naked, purportedly to “assess” their conditions, or lured them into intimate situations by setting up bogus “medical studies.”

The report concluded that scores of Ohio State personnel knew of complaints and concerns about Strauss’ conduct as early as 1979 but failed for years to investigate or take meaningful action.

Ohio State Provost Bruce McPheron said the report does not address whether anyone went to law enforcement at the time or was required to do so under the law back then.

In the wake of the report, some of Strauss’ victims called on the university to take responsibility for its inaction and the harm inflicted by the doctor.

“Dreams were broken, relationships with loved ones were damaged, and the harm now carries over to our children as many of us have become so overprotective that it strains the relationship with our kids,” Kent Kilgore said in a statement.

Steve Estey, an attorney for some of the former students who are suing, said: “If OSU refuses to take responsibility we will continue with civil litigation and put this in front of a jury for 12 people to judge their actions.”

No one has publicly defended Strauss, though family members have said they were shocked by the allegations.

At least 50 members of the athletic department staff, including many coaches, corroborated victims’ accounts of Strauss’ abuse, the report said. But students’ allegations never left the department or the health center until 1996.

At that point, Strauss was investigated and let go as a team doctor and physician at the health center but was allowed to retain his tenured faculty position.

Investigators said Strauss set up an off-campus clinic within months, receiving assurances from the associate vice president of health sciences and academic affairs that “there would be no issue” with him engaging in part-time private practice while on the faculty. The abuse continued there.

He continued to plead for his job back as an on-campus doctor, finally going to then-President Gordon Gee with a letter in 1997. His pleas were rejected, at which point Strauss was allowed to retire with emeritus status, a mark of distinguished service — an honor the university is now taking steps to revoke.

Gee, now president of West Virginia University, said Friday he has no recollection of Strauss.

The lawsuits against Ohio State are headed for mediation. They seek unspecified damages. Drake said the investigation alone has cost the school $ 6.2 million.

Separately, the U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights is examining whether Ohio State responded promptly and fairly to students’ complaints. The department could cut the university’s federal funding if it is found to have violated civil rights protections.

Before Friday’s release, the doctor’s accusers had alleged that Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan was one of the coaches back then who were aware of concerns about Strauss and didn’t stop him. Jordan, an assistant wrestling coach from 1987 to 1995, was not mentioned by name in the report, and a spokesman said the document showed the congressman did not know about the abuse.

New Liver Transplant Rules Begin Amid Fight Over Fairness

(Wendy Gomez via AP)

WASHINGTON (AP) — New rules aim to change how donated livers are distributed so that fewer people die waiting for a transplant, but they come amid a fierce fight over fairness.

Where you live makes a difference in how sick you must be to get a transplant. Beginning Tuesday, the transplant system ordered wider sharing of donated livers, so that people don’t get priority over someone sicker because they live closer to the donor hospital.

Places with severe shortages like New York pushed for the change. Some hospitals in parts of the Midwest and South sued to block it, arguing rural patients will wait longer as livers are shipped to cities with fewer donations. A federal judge refused to delay the rules but those hospitals are appealing even as they took effect.

Respeck On Her Name: Black Woman Lawyer Blasts Media Over Solely Giving Kim Kardashian Credit For Freeing 17 Inmates

Kim Kardashian West out and about in Paris

Source: WENN.com / WENN

The lawyer who Kim Kardashian worked alongside to spearhead the release of 17 prisoners is speaking out and asking for the media to give credit where it’s due.

For the last year, Kim Kardashian has received increasing attention for her role in criminal justice reform, but Houston based attorney Brittany K. Barnett of the Buried Alive Project, made sure to make it clear that she’s been advocating for this work for years, along with her partner MiAngel Cody.

Barnett posted a lengthy Facebook message on Tuesday after 17 men were released from life in federal prison over drug charges.

“The first and last time I will speak on it. Seriously, because the negativity from today is misdemeanor s*** and we still have lives to save. MiAngel Cody and I have BEEN doing this work for FREE,” she wrote.

“Ask any of our dozens of clients who are now free living their best lives. Both of us left six figure salary jobs and wiped out our own savings accounts to fund our work. We attempted to get grants from these large foundations shelling out MILLIONS of dollars to other organizations but would not look our way because they so-called don’t fund “direct services”. Our hands were full picking locks to human cages, we didn’t have time to participate in glorified begging from the nonprofit industrial complex only to be turned down.

But Barnett made it clear that she does not blame Kim for the media coverage, being that her name is destined to cause attention.

She also stated that Kim stepped in as a financial contributor after her and her partner were refused by different foundations.

“Kim has always been very clear in her role. It’s the media that spins it around – not Kim. We do not care how the media is portraying it – that’s what the media does. Who cares,” Barnett wrote. “We need Kim’s support and the support of anyone else who wants to join this fight. We love that she is using her platform to raise awareness. We ain’t trying to be famous, we trying to get our people free. Period.”

Seth Meyers Goes Off on Senate Republicans for ‘Obsessing’ Over Hillary Clinton’s Emails During Barr Testimony

NBC

Late Night host Seth Meyers dedicated his “A Closer Look” segment Wednesday night to today’s testimony of Attorney General William Barr in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Barr, who was handpicked for the AG role by President Trump, had to answer for why his four-page summary of the Mueller Report “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance” of the report—this according to the office of Robert Mueller.

“So now we know that the guy who spent almost two years putting together a 448-page report about a criminal conspiracy to interfere in the 2016 election complained that Trump’s handpicked attorney general misled the country about that report. That’s huge news,” explained Meyers. “And yet, when they had the chance to ask Barr about that news in a hearing today, Republican senators mostly acted like it didn’t happen.”

Madison Square Boys & Girls Club Luncheon Raises Over $200,000

NEW YORK — A raft of well-heeled Manhattan socialites gathered at the Metropolitan Club next to Central Park on Tuesday for the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club’s annual Style of Life luncheon — and they certainly didn’t forget to bring their purses with them.
The fundraiser, which was held in the club’s ornate ballroom facing Fifth Avenue, raised over $ 200,000 through a silent auction and raffle, double the amount seen in 2017. Donated prizes up for grabs this year included a luxury Belize vacation, a Canyon Ranch getaway and a Peloton.
Among the 200 guests in attendance were SoulCycle chief executive officer Melanie Whelan, who made a beeline for guest of honor Sam Kass, the former White House chef and senior policy adviser for nutrition under the Obama administration, to no doubt chat all things health and fitness.
Kass told WWD that his involvement in the charity, which organizes extracurricular programs for children and teens in many of New York’s most underserved communities, stretched back to his time at the White House.
“I know how important their work is in that critical gap in the afternoons where many of the kids go astray — not just for health, but everything else as well,”

John Singleton’s Daughter, Mother, Father And Girlfriend Set To Battle Over His Estate

Following the death of John Singleton on Monday at age 51 comes word that his family is set to battle for control of his estate.

Sources connected with the Singleton family tell TMZ that John’s mother, Shelia Ward, is not only up against John’s daughter, Cleopatra, but also his estranged father and girlfriend, the mother of his 1-year-old son.

Last week, Cleopatra filed a motion seeking to block her grandmother’s proposed conservatorship. She claims Ward wants to liquidate all of John’s assets and freeze out his 7 children, the report states.

Singleton’s estate is allegedly worth $ 35 million and Cleopatra fears Sheila will make it impossible for her and others in the family to access what they believe they are rightfully entitled to financially.

John’s mother is his longtime business manager, thus the reason why she filed for the conservatorship after he reportedly fell into a coma last week. But Ward denies plotting to cut her son’s children from his estate.

Cleopatra, meanwhile, doesn’t trust her grandmother and she’s suggesting John’s son, Maasai or his father, Danny be appointed conservators instead of Sheila.

The acclaimed director, who was the first Black male to receive an Oscar nomination, suffered a stroke after experiencing weakness in his legs, and was admitted to the hospital on April 17. He was taken off life support Monday and died a few hours later.

His family issued a statement, saying: “We are sad to relay that John Singleton has died. John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends. We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time.” — The Singleton Family.

ENTERTAINMENT UPDATE:

Game of Thrones fans are freaking out over Sunday night’s episode

SPOILERS AHEAD

On Sunday night, the third episode of the final season of Game of Thrones aired and, as expected, it was a memorable one.

In the episode, titled The Long Night, the Night King and his army of white walkers storm Winterfell for a dusk-till-dawn battle against the Starks, the Targaryens and their allies. And as many fans speculated, the clash ended with several casualties.

One more time – if you haven’t seen the episode and you’re still reading, you want to stop here because there are serious spoilers ahead.

It’s a well-known fact that the writers of the HBO series aren’t afraid to kill off important characters, so there was absolutely no reason to believe that they wouldn’t do it halfway through the final season.

Last night the long-awaited Battle of Winterfell took the lives of seven characters – including the Night King himself and two originals that have been around since season one – so it’s safe to say fans had a lot to discuss.

Theon Greyjoy, who returned to Winterfell this season to fight for the Starks, died guarding Bran as the Night Knight ran a spike through him. Meanwhile, fan favourite Jorah Mormont spent the entire episode fighting by Daenerys’ side, but succumbed to his wounds at the end of the battle.

‘Ok but Drogon mourning Jorah’s death with Daenerys was probably one of the most heartbreaking scenes,’ one fan wrote in response.

Somewhere in between these fatalities, a giant crushed Lyanna Mormont to death (so now the House of Mormont is officially extinct), and Melisandre made a reappearance to light the Dothraki’s swords, but later took her own life by removing her necklace.

‘Shoutout to this boss ass bitch Melisandre who increased this episode’s lighting so we could see some shit too and gave Arya the pep talk before she slayed the night king,’ another fan joked. The lighting is an issue many other viewers seem to agree on (making for some hilarious memes).

While we’re still mourning the death of some of our favourite characters and bracing ourselves for the final three episodes, thank god there’s Twitter to help us see the light in this darkness (pun intended) and prepare for episode four.

Police in England are asking rape survivors to give over their phones—here’s why that’s so problematic

Police in England are asking rape survivors to give over their phones—here’s why that’s so problematic

Police in England are asking rape survivors to give over their phones—here’s why that’s so problematic

It’s still a terrible reality that the majority of rapists go unpunished—often because victims fear being shamed or doubted should they come forward. Now, according to BBC News, police in England and Wales have introduced a new consent form that asks plaintiffs (aka, those reporting the rape) to surrender their phones for review.

The BBC notes that the form technically allows accusers to refuse to let police use their data for evidence, with space to explain their reasons. However, the form also states that if they refuse, “it may not be possible for the investigation or prosecution to continue”—arguing that evidence is required for defendants to have a fair trial.

The Guardian notes that if accusers have communicated with the accused, their messages are considered a “reasonable line of enquiry”—meaning that police have reason to read these messages. However, some advocates for survivors take issue with the new practice. In a statement to The Guardian, Rachel Krys, the co-director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition, pointed out that most rapists in the U.K. are never prosecuted and that “investigations too often focus on women’s character, honesty, and sexual history.”

“If the new national consent form that victims will be asked to sign gives the police complete access to a woman’s entire personal records, phones, computers, etc.–which may include thousands of personal and private conversations and images–these prejudices and barriers are being reinforced” she told The Guardian.

Vera Baird, the lead on victims for the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, told The Telegraph that the new policy could make rape survivors reluctant to report, leading to more perpetrators going unpunished.

“This is not consent,” she told the paper. “This is an authority figure asking you to sign a form as soon as you have finished an interview reliving what is one of the most horrific experiences of your life.”

The Telegraph reports that the U.K.’s Centre for Women’s Justice is already planning to challenge the policy along with two survivors who claim that it is a violation of privacy.

It’s so frustrating to think that a measure designed to help solve rape cases could prevent rape survivors from coming forward. We hope that English and Welsh police listen to advocates’ concerns about this problematic policy.

Judge Denies Petition By Prince Heirs To Limit Bank’s Power Over Late Singer’s Estate

A Minnesota judge has denied a request by Prince’s heirs to limit Comerica Bank & Trust powers over the administration of the late singer’s estate.

As we previously reported, three years after the death of music icon at age 57, his massive estate, believed to be worth hundreds of millions, remains in limbo as it is “still unsettled, still not officially valued and still not disbursed to the heirs, his six siblings,” USA Today writes.

Prince’s heirs — Tyka Nelson, his full sister, and his half-siblings, Norrine Nelson, Sharon Nelson, John Nelson, Alfred Jackson and Omarr Baker — claim administrators have spent $ 45 million on probate-related administrative expenses, including $ 10 million in legal fees. They also claim the estate still owes $ 31 million in unpaid taxes that continues to collect interest.

The siblings are trying to take more control over the estate so they filed a petition earlier this month to limit the power of Comerica Bank & Trust. But Judge Kevin Eide ruled that the heirs presented “little or no specificity” and until they come up with some “viable alternative” the Comerica arrangement will stay in place, Billboard reports.

“While the Court certainly appreciates the Heirs’ concerns with respect to preserving estate assets, minimizing estate exposes and planning for distributions, those concerns are more effectively addressed through discourse and mediation,” Eide ruled.

The judge said while he understands that the heirs want to reduce expenses, their motions have the rick of “significantly increasing Estate expenses.”

He said reducing Comerica’s power would “create a vacuum of uncertainty” and “may result in the loss of entertainment deal opportunities, which are necessary to raise needed funds to pay estate taxes and lead to the distribution of funds to the Heirs.”

He also noted that Comerica agreed to reduce its monthly compensation from $ 125,000 to $ 110,00 (not including expenses).

The judge also ordered the bank to keep the heirs informed of the exact amount of the outstanding tax liability.

A statement from Sharon Nelson reads: “We are continued to be dismayed and disappointed in the Judge Eide partially to Comerica and their advisors who have done a poor job managing this estate.”

Comedy Central

On Wednesday, the news broke that President Donald Trump had an Oval Office meeting with Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey, wherein he proceeded to badger the bearded tech bro over his follower count.

Trump, who boasts close to 60 million Twitter followers—far short of former President Obama’s 106 million-plus—reportedly argued that he’d lost a significant number of followers due to purges targeting conservatives. But Dorsey “had to explain to the president that like other Twitter users, @realDonaldTrump periodically loses followers when the site deletes fake or bot accounts,” reported The Daily Beast.

“That’s right, my friends: the President of the United States is upset because he feels he should have more Twitter followers,” said Trevor Noah. “This is absolutely ridiculous. Like, what’s next? He’s going to complain to Instagram because his thirst traps aren’t blowing up?”

Over $2 Million Raised for Black Churches Burned Down in Louisiana

The three historically black churches that were burned down earlier this month in Louisiana are finally getting the help they desperately need.

The Seventh District Baptist Association, a 149-year-old nonprofit religious organization, partnered with the Governor of Louisiana, local leaders, elected officials, the impacted churches, other faith organizations, and the community to raise funds to support the sanctuaries. The organization, which is led by President Freddie Jack and consists of approximately 60 Baptist churches from seven parishes in Southwest Louisiana, launched a GoFundMe campaign on April 10. However, nothing was really happening until New York magazine and HuffPost writer Yahsar Ali challenged his social media followers to donate $ 1,000 to the campaign, sparking a worldwide outpouring of support. More than 37,000 people from across the country and over 40 countries and territories around the world donated to the campaign in just seven days. Ali announced that the campaign raised $ 2 million in a tweet on April 18. More than $ 2.1 million had been raised by April 22.

The donations received are earmarked specifically for the Seventh District’s impacted member churches: St. Mary Baptist Church, Greater Union Baptist Church, and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

According to an update on the GoFundMe page, charges have been filed against the man accused of burning the three African American churches. Holden Matthews, the 21-year-old white man and son of a St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s deputy, was arrested and charged with two counts of simple arson, one count of aggravated arson, and three counts hate crimes. His attorney entered a not guilty plea.

The St. Landry Parish District Attorney is prosecuting the case. The DA filed a motion asking that the suspect’s bail be denied, stating that Matthews is “an imminent danger” and should be kept behind bars until his trial.

Meghan McCain Blows Up Over Mueller Report; Whoopi Goldberg Cuts Her Off

The View

Returning from a week-long break, The View began Monday’s broadcast reacting to the recently released Mueller report. Naturally, that segment ended with Whoopi Goldberg cutting off conservative co-host Meghan McCain during a tirade claiming Democrats are going to get President Trump re-elected by “demonizing” all Republicans.

In response to Sen. Mitt Romney’s (R-UT) highly critical statement of Trump following the report—which found Trump repeatedly tried to obstruct the Russia probe—co-host Sunny Hostin said the Utah senator would still likely not vote for impeachment if it reached the Senate. Romney and other Republicans, he said, will ultimately refuse to hold Trump accountable.

Former Fox News host Abby Huntsman jumped in to debate both Hostin and co-host Joy Behar, noting that Trump’s base feels like he “got a big win” from the report because the media set an expectation that “he was going to be booted out.” Behar and Hostin, meanwhile, pointed out that Trump’s overall approval rating went down to 37 percent—and that’s where McCain jumped in for her take.

Coachella Security Guards Allege Inhumane Treatment: ‘People Over Here Are Starving’

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty

Every year, music lovers and miscellaneous basics flood Indio, California, for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Coachella is known for its huge headlining artists and general aura of douchebaggery—the stereotypical festivalgoer is a rich kid sporting a headdress and a fanny pack, scouring the desert for good times and even better Instagram opportunities.

Of course, these highly-mocked caricatures only make up part of the story. The festival is also populated with an army of staffers who aren’t in Indio to party. This contingent includes security guards who work long days in high heat confiscating contraband, protecting talent, and generally attempting to ensure that everyone survives the weekend. It’s an important job, and an appealing one for fans and entertainment world-adjacent security professionals.

Antonio Cannady, a screenwriter based in Los Angeles, told The Daily Beast that he heard about a company based in Long Beach that was hiring security for Coachella. “So I went down there and applied and then we had this little quick orientation. It wasn’t much of an interview, it was like a cattle call, ‘cause we go inside this room and everybody’s standing up. It’s hot, we’re all sweating. But they talked it up like it’s Coachella, this big music festival. And they were like, yeah, it’s going to be like camping, so bring a tent and a sleeping bag or whatever.”

After Donations For Notre Dame, Black Churches Burned In Louisiana Receive Over $1M In Aid To Rebuild

High Angle View Of Pews By Aisle At Church

Source: Mongkol Nitirojsakul / EyeEm / Getty

After social media called out the blatant hypocrisy over Americans throwing their support and wallets behind the rebuilding of the Notre Dame Cathedral, a spike in donations received for three historically Black churches affected by a sting of fires has dramatically increased.

The GoFundMe page which was first launched on April 10 by the Seventh District Baptist Association, has seen a total of over $ 1.3 million in contributions, nearing its $ 1.8 million goal.

“The host of this campaign is the Seventh District Baptist Association, a 149 year old non-profit religious organization,” the host organization wrote on the crowdfunding page. The association is made up of over 60 Baptist churches across Louisiana.

“We are working with the Governor of Louisiana, local leaders, elected officials, the impacted churches and their pastors, other faith organizations and the community to ensure 100% of all funds raised will be evenly distributed to the three churches affected.”

The number is a drastic change from the $ 150,000 in donations it received prior to the Notre Dame fire, and was mostly due to the efforts of Black and brown social media users who pushed for financial support. Their voices raised in unison made it obvious that there was a disconnect over the emotion displayed for Notre Dame’s Cathedral in relation to what happened on U.S. soil.

Prominent figures such as Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton and Valerie Jarrett also shared the link for the page and or made donations, prompting more people to join in the effort.

The funds will help to rebuild three historically black churches in St. Landry Parish which were burned down over the course of 10 days: St. Mary Baptist Church on March 26, Greater Union Baptist Church on April 2 and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on April 4. Officials have arrested Holden Matthews, 21, in connection with the fires. Matthews, a white man, is also the son of the deputy sheriff, and faces arson and hate crime charges in the case.

Say What Now? Massive Gas Station Brawl Breaks Out Over Hot Dogs [Video]

Gas prices are soaring all over the country, but that’s not what led to this brawl at an Ohio gas station.

This brawl broke out over hot dogs.

Yes, hot dogs.

via NYDN:

Four women were caught on video attacking a man with everything they could get their hands on when he stepped in to stop them from beating up another female customer, according to Cam Dancy, who posted the video on YouTube and spoke to Cleveland’s 19 News.

“I know the video makes it look like he was trying to fight them, but they were actually jumping him,” Dancy said. “They were throwing trash cans and the windshield wiper thing, and one girl ripped the gas pump off and tried to hit him with that.”

According to a service station employee at the Akron station, the dustup started after someone in the shop accused the four women of stealing hot dogs.

When the foursome descended on that woman, the man in the video allegedly intervened, shoving one woman to the ground in the parking lot. Her friends then swarmed him, throwing a squeegee, a gas hose and what appear to be plastic garbage can lids at him.

Dancy said, “They threw the entire gas station at him.”

We thought our eyes were deceiving us, but one woman is actually slinging around an entire gas pump + hose.

Take a look.

It turns out that a little more than half of the buyers this study classifies as having switched over to the Pixel 3 (51%) were former Samsung handset owners.

Jackée Harry Says Eartha Kitt Once “Slapped The F%#! Outta Me” Over A Man

Jackée Harry and Eartha Kitt

Source: Michael Bezjian/Getty Images for Entertainment Studios and Bryan Bedde / Getty

Archive this one in little-known and very crazy Hollywood history facts.

Jackée Harry, former star of 227, revealed on Twitter on Wednesday that she had a less than pleasant encounter at one time with the late acting and singing legend, Eartha Kitt. She didn’t say when, but shared that the greatest Catwoman of all pulled out her claws, or make that her hand, and slapped Harry. It was all over a cheating man.

She recounted the story after writer Michael Segalov asked people what their most surreal encounter was with someone famous. Harry said Kitt “slapped the f%#!” out of her because she was messing around with Kitt’s man, not knowing that the guy and the icon were in a relationship:

We can’t imagine how crazy of a scene that was, but we are glad that Harry didn’t mind sharing.

Interesting enough, Kitt had her own less than pleasant encounter with another woman, pertaining to a man. She said in historian Donald Bogle’s book, Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams, that Nat King Cole’s wife, Maria (Natalie’s mother), wrote her a letter telling her to watch herself with Nat. Even though he and Kitt weren’t involved, she claims he sent her some flowers after they wrapped up working on the film St. Louis Blues. The note with the flowers read, “Handy misses Go-Go,” which were the names of their characters. She sent a note back reading “Go-Go also misses Handy.” Maria caught wind of it and made her displeasure with their friendship known.

“She [Maria] sent me a beaded cashmere sweater as a thank-you gift with a note pinned to it that must have poisoned the pen that wrote it,” Kitt said in the book. According to her, the note read, “I don’t know if you think of yourself as some kind of temptress siren but the film is over and Go-Go (you) is gone, let’s leave it that way.”

It sounds like Kitt certainly heeded that warning, and Harry likely learned a lesson from the star’s hard hand…

Another fireball exploded over Russia, and plenty of people caught it on video

russia meteor

If you want to see space rocks exploding in Earth’s atmosphere apparently you’d be best served by moving to Russia. At least that seems to be the case now that yet another fireball has appeared in the skies over Siberia, catching the eyes of countless citizens and giving everyone just the tiniest bit of a scare.

The object, which exploded over the town of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia, didn’t cause any damage and there have been no injuries associated with it visiting Earth in a blaze of glory. What it did do, however, is provide a reason for lots of people to look skyward, and thankfully several of them had cameras rolling.

Chris Darden’s Daughter Has Been Harassed Over Her Father Defending Nipsey Hussle’s Alleged Killer

Rapper Nipsey Hussle's Alleged Killer Eric Holder Makes First Court Appearance

Source: Francine Orr / Getty

Since it has been announced that Chris Darden is defending Nipsey Hussle’s alleged killer, Eric Holder, his daughter Jenee Harden said she has been getting harassed via social media.

She addressed the hostility coming her way via Instagram and said she found out her father is defending Holder on social media with the rest of the world.

“I was not prepared for this backlash that has triggered bad memories from the O.J Simpson Trial,” she wrote. ” My father is a grown man and has been a defense attorney for some time. I have no say in the cases he takes on.”

Harden went on to say that she understands the outrage and pain surrounding Nipsey Hussle’s murder but it doesn’t justify the “vile comments”  that have been thrown her way.

“Instead of attacking me and others who have nothing to do with this case, channel that energy toward continuing Nipsey’s legacy in strengthening our communities and lifting up each other.”

Holder was charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Holder is accused of shooting Hussle six times outside of his The Marathon clothing store on March 31st. Holder, 29, was arrested on April 2nd.

Homeland Security Chief Kirstjen Nielsen Resigned After Trump Flogged Her Over Border Security

Win McNamee/Getty

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned from her position on Sunday evening, after serving sixteen months on the job.

Nielsen’s departure comes only two days after President Donald Trump announced that he was withdrawing the nomination of Ronald D. Vitiello to head U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Homeland Security agency tasked with enforcing Trump’s border policy, in favor of a “tougher” nominee who has yet to be named.

Trump lambasted the current enforcement of American immigration laws for years, and as the nation’s top immigration and national security official, those laws and their implementation fell under Nielsen’s purview.

Justice Department warns Academy over potentially excluding Netflix

The feud between Netflix and the old Hollywood guard who’d like to exclude the streaming service has a new challenger: the Department of Justice.

The head of the DOJ’s antitrust division has sent a letter to the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences, which runs the Oscars, warning the organization over potential antitrust violations if it decides to exclude streaming services from future award shows.

In the letter obtained by Variety,  DOJ antitrust chief Makan Delrahim writes that “in the event that the Academy — an association that includes multiple competitors in its membership — establishes certain eligibility requirements for the Oscars that eliminate competition without procompetitive justification, such conduct may raise antitrust concerns.” Read more…

Outfit Formula: Black Dress Over Black Pants

When a dress is worn over pants, it becomes a tunic. The combination is an acquired taste, and one I personally like to wear. In this case, the bottoms are NOT leggings. They’re cropped flares or straights, full-length bootcuts, skinnies or cigarette pants.

These combinations are black, but feel free to wear any colour palette. The column of colour is dark, dramatic and streamlining. Note that the dresses are straight or gently A-line, which adds structure and polish to the outfits. Pick a bag and topper that works with the outfit to complete the look.

1. Bootcut Elegance

Combine a shirtdress with a pair of full-length bootcuts and add pointy-toe shoes. I’d have preferred to see metallic, white or red boots here, but black works well. The shirtdress is fairly fitted, which adds structure and polish to the outfit. Bless those perfect pant lengths.

Violeta Denim Shirt Dress

2. ‘90s Ethereal Layers

Combine a fluid wrap dress with cigarette pants that are split up the front. Add flat sandals, and Bob’s your uncle. The V-neck, slits on the hems of the pants, and the sandals break up the expanse of the black by showcasing some skin.

Zara Double Breasted Shirt Dress

3. Arty and Architectural

Combine an architectural dress with cropped cigarette pants or skinnies, and finish off the look with loafers, flats, oxfords, shooties, pumps, mules or sandals. The tapered pants offset the volume of the bottom half of the dress. I’d have liked to see metallic, white, snakeskin, leopard or tan footwear here instead of black.

COS Asymmetric Tie Dress

4. Long and Streamlined

Combine a straight midi shirtdress with cropped straights or cropped flares, and finish off the look with oxfords, mules, sandals, pumps, loafers or flats. It’s a good idea to leave some of the bottom buttons unfastened so that you can stride more easily. Although this shirtdress is not a button-through style, it’s fairly roomy and slippery, which makes the combination more comfortable to walk in than you expect. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.

COS Printed Mid-Length Dress

I wear my version of this outfit formula regularly in warm weather. My version breaks up the black with red, pink and white. I combine a black embroidered dress with black cropped flared pants, and finish off the look with white loafers and bag, or pink ballet flats and red bag. White pearls and red specs too. I add a denim jacket for the chill. The exact items I use to create the outfits are in the collection below.

Google Loses Gay-Rights Endorsement Over Controversial Conversion Therapy App

Google lost an endorsement from the Human Rights Campaign, the largest U.S. LGBTQ group, over an app tied to the practice of so-called “conversion therapy” to change a gay person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Alphabet Inc.’s Google, which had previously scored a perfect 100 on the annual Corporate Equality Index, will have its rating withheld until the app is removed from its Android phones, Human Rights Campaign said in a statement. It’s only the third time in the 17-year history of the index that a rating has been withheld.

“We have been urging Google to remove this app because it is life-threatening to LGBTQ youth and also clearly violates the company’s own standards,” the Human Rights Campaign said in a statement. The program has already been removed from app stores run by Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc., the group said. Conversion therapy has been denounced by medical organizations and lawmakers who have pushed to ban licensed therapists from working with minors on the program.

Google didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

A perfect score on the Corporate Equality Index is used by many companies to appeal to future and current employees seeking a diverse and supportive workplace, particularly millennial workers moving into the majority of the labor pool. This year, a record 570 companies received the top 100-point rating, according to the report released Thursday.

The app in dispute was developed by Living Hope Ministries, a Christian group formed in 1989 in Texas which says it is an outlet for people struggling with a conflict between faith and sexuality. A January blog post that protested Apple’s decision to remove the app from its App Store disputed a connection to conversion therapy. Living Hope Ministries didn’t immediately return an email seeking comment.

Walmart Inc. retained a perfect score in this year’s Corporate Equality Index. The largest retailer had its perfect score suspended last year after two federal complaints alleged the world’s largest retailer hadn’t protected transgender employees from discrimination. The only other time a rating was withheld was in 2015 when Saks Inc. was involved in a legal dispute with a transgender employee.

Rapper Sheck Wes Escapes Charges Over Alleged Assault Of Justine Skye

2019 Roc Nation THE BRUNCH - Arrivals

Source: Amanda Edwards / Getty

Rapper Sheck Wes dodged charges stemming from an alleged altercation, where his ex-girlfriend, Justine Skye accused him of domestic violence.

According to TMZ who obtained the legal documents, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office declined to pursue an investigation into the matter, claiming the case lacked substantial evidence. Skye claims Wes once threw a phone across a hotel room at the Montrose Hotel in Hollywood last summer, slapped her across the face with a stack of cash, and verbally attacked her during the duration of their relationship.

Skye’s rep submitted a response to TMZ which summarizing the disappointment in the D.A.’s decision to not prosecute.

“A judge in the Superior Court of California granted a restraining order against Sheck Wes that is still in effect and the correlating case is still pending,” the statement read.

“However, it is unfortunate that the Los Angeles District Attorney decided to not pursue any further action at this time but that is often the case with many victims of domestic violence which is why incidents like this go unreported much of the time.”

In February 2019 Skye claimed she endured physical and emotional abuse at the hands of the Harlem rapper, and marked the first time she openly attributed Wes as her abuser.

Skye, who has moved on to date D.C. rapper Goldlink, claimed Wes attempted to physically assault and stalk her and a group of friends during Grammy weekend 2019 in Los Angeles. The thread resulted in a back and forth between Skye and Wes, who ultimately denied the accusations.

Skye then tweeted a series of items, including a video of Wes jumping a gate and a text thread where she told another friend that she feared for her life.

A few days after the revealing, Skye also shared that she felt belittled by a police officer as she attempted to file a restraining order against the rapper.

However, a restraining order was later granted due to Skye’s request.

New R. Kelly Tape Showing Alleged Sex Abuse Handed Over to Authorities

A Pennsylvania man claimed Sunday that he was cleaning an old video collection and found a tape that allegedly shows R.Kelly “sexually abusing underage African-American girls.”

Gary Dennis, who works in a nursing home, said at a press conference in Manhattan that he turned the video over to authorities. His lawyer, Gloria Allred, said they gave it to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
