'Kingsman 3' Takes Over James Bond Release Date; Here's Everything We Know

Success maketh another sequel. Kingsman 3, revealed last year as being a possibility, has now been officially greenlit for a 2019 release. While the previous installment, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, was not as well-received by critics as the original, Kingsman: The Secret Service (53% vs. 74% on Rotten Tomatoes), the sequel did about match the first movie's worldwide gross ($ 411 million vs. $ 414 million). Doing a third (and more) is obviously a good decision by Fox.

From run-ins with famous friends to getting pulled over by the cops, this is Riverdale actress Cami Mendes’ New York Fashion Week video diary.

A Monday off from work isn’t typical for actress Camila Mendes—at least not in September. “We shoot #Riverdale nine months out of the year,” she tells ELLE.com. But when the actress who plays Manhattan fashionista Veronica Lodge was presented with the opportunity to attend her first ever New York Fashion Week, Mendes made it work. If only for two days, she was heading to NYC to take in the shows.

First up? Prabal Gurung. Excited for her “Kendall Jenner moment,” the actress went with a red turtleneck and pink trousers, making the most of her debut.

On day two, she managed to squeeze in an appearance at a 12:00 p.m. Zimmermann show, before jetting off to the airport to make her 4 p.m. flight back to Vancouver—and back to the “no red lipstick rule” her character Veronica Lodge abides by.

Doctor To The Stars Disciplined Over Use Of Controversial Menopause Therapy

In a conversation with Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, the Duchess of York, that aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network, Dr. Prudence Hall said age isn’t what determines health and vitality. “It’s about how healthy your hormones are,” she said. Hormone therapy means “we don’t have to grow old and grow ill,” she said. Hall was disciplined late last month by the Medical Board of California. (Screen grab from “Dr. Prudence Hall | Finding Sarah | Oprah Winfrey Network” on YouTube)

A Santa Monica doctor who touted a controversial menopause therapy on the Oprah Winfrey Network and received testimonials for her work from such celebrity patients as model Cindy Crawford and actress-author Suzanne Somers has been disciplined by California’s medical board for gross negligence.

In a settlement approved late last month, the Medical Board of California put Dr. Prudence Hall on probation for four years, faulting her for being “unaware” of potential risks posed by the plant-based hormones — including cancer — and failing to monitor her patients properly.

Hall used numerous hormones to treat two women, according to the board, missing an aggressive uterine cancer in one patient and treating the other based on an “incorrect diagnosis in a manner such that [Hall] stood to gain financially.”

“My jaw was on the floor. This is just egregious,” said Dr. Jen Gunter, a San Francisco Bay Area OB-GYN who reviewed the medical board’s report. “You hear about all these self-described functional medicine doctors providing these treatments. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be in this ballpark.”

A statement issued by Hall’s publicist Monday did not address the specifics of the board’s findings but generally defended the doctor’s results and commitment to patients.

“Dr. Hall continues to devote her career and life to helping patients achieve optimal health and wellness,” the statement said.

“She utilizes advances in modern medicine plus proven natural therapies. Safely incorporating results of the latest medical research has allowed her to achieve exceptional results for her patients.”

The statement added that Hall “joins respected physicians worldwide who are also using” this type of hormone therapy.

The hormone therapies prescribed by Hall are supposedly customized to individual patients’ needs and are generally not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. They are known as “bioidentical” because their molecular structure is the same as the natural hormones found in a woman’s body, including estrogen and progesterone.

Hall has claimed to have treated more than 40,000 patients with them over 30 years. Under the terms of her settlement with the board, she is no longer allowed to promote herself as a specialist in hormone therapy, an OB-GYN or an endocrinologist, and she must submit her medical practice to oversight by an outside physician who will report to the board. She is allowed to continue treating women for menopause management and other health issues.

Her case stands as a possible warning to many other physicians and providers who have embraced such unproven hormone treatments. Popularized by testimonials from celebrity women, these made-to-order hormones are used by up to 2.5 million women in the United States, according to one study.

Representatives for Crawford and Somers said they chose not to comment at this time.

Hall has been hailed by supporters as a “pioneer” in this type of personalized bioidentical hormone therapy, appearing on national television and infomercials and promoting such treatments as a virtual fountain of youth.

“It’s not about age; it’s about how healthy your hormones are,” Hall told Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, in a conversation on the Oprah Winfrey Network in 2011. “It’s new to think we don’t have to grow old and grow ill.”

In her appearances, Hall offers an appealing message to women entering their 50s and 60s who are looking for “natural” relief from hot flashes, night sweats, loss of libido, aging skin or other concerns.

The hormone treatments she provides are “like water to a plant,” Hall told Somers on an episode of Somers’ television program, “The Suzanne Show.” “How could water be bad for a plant? … Hormones do not cause cancer.”

Dr. David Gorski, a surgical oncologist, professor of surgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a longtime critic of unproven alternative medicine, rejected Hall’s analogy. “I’m not a gardener by any stretch of the imagination,” he said, “but even I know that too much water can kill a plant.”

Many other clinicians and researchers say there’s no evidence to back up the claims by Hall and other doctors that these customized treatments are more effective or safer or that they act any differently in the body than FDA-approved hormone replacement therapies.

Some bioidentical hormones, unlike the ones primarily used by Hall, are FDA-approved. They are manufactured in pharmaceutical plants using standard formulas and have been shown to relieve menopausal symptoms — though they have not been tested in large, long-term trials — according to a report in Harvard Women’s Health Watch.

The customized therapies used by Hall and other doctors are mixed in compounding pharmacies and generally are not tested for safety and efficacy, according to Harvard Women’s Health Watch and other reports.

Compounded bioidenticals are big business. In 2013, U.S. sales of these products were estimated in one study at $ 845 million, compared with a $ 3.7 billion market for traditional, FDA-approved hormone replacement medications.

“There’s a definite concern that for some women they may be dangerous,” said Dr. Janet Pregler, director of the Iris Cantor-UCLA Women’s Health Center. “Often these [hormones] are presented as risk-free, when we as physicians know that nothing you put in your body is risk-free.”

Women flocked to bioidentical hormone treatment after the Women’s Health Initiative, a massive federally funded study on a widely used hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, was halted prematurely in 2002 over concerns about an elevated risk of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Hall, according to medical board investigators, put a patient with a family history of uterine cancer on a regimen of bioidentical hormones after the woman complained of “zero libido” and menstrual migraines. She also prescribed iodine and two adrenal hormone supplements. The patient started to bleed — a potential warning sign of uterine cancer — but Hall prescribed her more hormones, according to the medical board.

Ultimately, the patient developed a cancerous mass in her uterus — but board investigators alleged that Hall failed to detect it, after performing ultrasounds on the patient that she was not certified to analyze. She charged the patient $ 7,000 over three years for the treatment, according to the board.

In the two cases for which she was disciplined — which occurred between 2011 and 2015 — the medical board found that Hall treated women who were not yet in menopause but whom she incorrectly diagnosed as being in perimenopause. Those are the years immediately before menopause that can create uncomfortable symptoms such as hot flashes and low libido. Their lab tests showed hormone values within normal limits, the board said.

The second patient had numerous other conditions including diabetes and a history of psychiatric disorders, according to the board. The board said Hall diagnosed the patient with hypothyroidism when no clinical evidence supported such a diagnosis — and that later aberrations that surfaced in lab testing had actually been caused by the physician’s treatment.

Hall presented herself to patients as a specialist in “hormone balance,” or endocrinology,” but does not have any post-medical school training by an accredited fellowship in either medical or reproductive endocrinology, according to the board.

It’s not the first time California’s medical board has disciplined a doctor for prescribing such bioidentical hormones. In 2009, the board put Dr. Michael Platt of Rancho Mirage on five years’ probation after charging him with negligence and incompetence for his treatments of several patients. The doctor, author of “The Miracle of Bio-identical Hormones,” later was forced to surrender his license.

Experts say such doctors take advantage of patients’ vulnerability as they age.

“We all fear getting older and loss of sexuality, and the way society makes women feel, women are more vulnerable to it, for sure,” said Gunter, the Bay Area OB-GYN. “I don’t blame the patients for going to the doctor and putting trust in them. I blame the doctors for saying this can somehow help them.”

Sheila Cosgrove Baylis of People magazine contributed to this report.

A Louisiana Mayor Ordered a Boycott of Nike Gear Over ‘Political’ Colin Kaepernick Ad

The day after Nike announced Colin Kaepernick as the face of its new ad campaign, a Louisiana mayor reportedly banned the company’s products from booster clubs and recreation facilities.

Ben Zahn, the mayor of Kenner, Louisiana, ordered the moratorium on buying or wearing Nike products in a leaked memorandum that was dated Sept. 5.

“Under no circumstances will any Nike product or any product with the Nike logo be purchased for use or delivery at any City of Kenner Recreation Facility,” the memo read, according to CNN.

The memo, which stated that it was effective immediately, said that all athletic gear and equipment purchased by the booster clubs must be approved by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Intended as an internal directive, the leaked memo quickly spread on social media.

In a statement on Monday, Zahn said he was trying to protect taxpayers from funding a “political campaign.”

“My decision disallowing Nike from profiting from our taxpayers while they are using their powerful voice as a political tool is my message. This government will not let taxpayer dollars be used to promote a company’s or individual’s political position, platform or principle,” he said.

He added that people would be allowed to wear their own Nike apparel to city parks and playgrounds.

The Kenner city ban is the latest backlash against Nike’s decision to feature the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback in its anniversary “Just Do It” campaign. The Kaepernick endorsement prompted some to call for a #NikeBoycott, with people posting videos of themselves burning and destroying Nike gear.

Kaepernick sparked a wave of NFL national anthem protests against racial inequality and political brutality. His decision to kneel and his new involvement with Nike has drawn criticism, including from President Donald Trump. But the endorsement deal has also been a windfall for Nike, which reportedly saw a 31% increase in online sales after the ad was released.

BOLIVAR, Ohio — A Giant Eagle employee was accused of stealing over $ 9,200 worth of deli meat.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Lawrence Township Giant Eagle loss prevention manager received a tip that an employee had been eating meat in the deli.

The manager reportedly told authorities that the employee had allegedly eaten three to five pieces of ham every day over the course of eight years.

According to the Dispatch, the manager calculated that the cost of all the eaten ham and it was approximately a $ 9,200 loss.

A deputy with the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Department told the Dispatch that the 28-year-old employee admitted to the theft on Friday and “was very cooperative.”

The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office clarified on Facebook Saturday that they did take report of the issue as requested by Giant Eagle, but no determination of charges have yet been made.  As procedure, they have sent the report to the Prosecutor’s Office who will make the decision.

Move Over Roger Federer. This Move Is the Real Upset at the U.S. Open 2018

The tennis world may be reeling over five-time U.S. Open champion Roger Federer’s unexpected loss to John Millman, ranked far below Federer at number 55, but fans at Arthur Ashe stadium know the real upset took place before the match—someone was spotted dipping chicken fingers into soda.

ESPN reportedly broadcast the abhorrent behavior during the Madison Keys-Dominika Cibulkova match-up at the Queens, N.Y. tennis championship on Monday afternoon and reporting the crime against chicken quickly overshadowed live commenting on the match on Twitter.

The woman’s preferred chicken tender pairing soon became the talk of social media, as she seemingly managed to gross out the entire internet with one dunk of deep-fried chicken. The offensive dipping picked up traction online as the shocking snack pairing went viral. Even trusted snack source @Faturday deemed it “mutant” behavior:

Rihanna Reportedly ‘Sad’ Over Ex Chris Brown’s Custody Drama – She Once Wanted To Be His Baby Mama

Rihanna is definitely over Chris Brown romantically, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t care about him. That being said, a new report by HollywoodLife says the singer is sad over her ex’s current custody battle with Nia Guzman.

His baby mama wants Chris to triple the child support he currently pays their 4-year-old daughter Royalty.

One insider tells the outlet that this whole mess has gotten Rihanna remembering how ‘back when she and Chris were still together they used to talk about how many kids they’d have and how cute they’d be. There was a time where Rihanna was certain without a doubt that Chris would be the father of her children.’

As a result, allegedly, ‘It was a bit heart-breaking for her when she found out about Chris having a baby girl with someone else. She always thought if she and Chris had a baby together it’d be adorable and incredibly talented.’

Either way, the source tells HollywoodLife that regardless of what happened between them, she wishes Chris all the best and right now, his life is not the easiest and stress-free.

They went on to claim that ‘As much as she knows that was not meant to be there is still a part of her that wishes they could’ve had their happy ending and their perfect family.’

‘Hearing about Chris dealing with custody issues makes her a little sad, it’s hard not to imagine what it could’ve been like if they had had a little girl together. It isn’t something she dwells on, but the feelings are there so hearing about what is going on with Chris and Royalty triggers her.’

USA Gymnastics Head Kerry Perry Resigns Amid Pressure Over Sexual Abuse Scandal

Kerry Perry, who was appointed president and CEO of USA Gymnastics at the beginning of the year to guide the struggling organization through a sexual abuse scandal involving national team doctor Larry Nassar, has resigned, effective immediately.

In a letter to its members posted on its website on Tuesday morning, Karen Golz, chair of the USA Gymnastics board of directors, said: “I am writing to tell you that USA Gymnastics President and CEO Kerry Perry informed our Board of Directors last night that she will resign effective immediately. On behalf of the board, I want to thank Kerry for her leadership under very difficult circumstances.”

Perry was brought in by previous board members who were in place during the many years that Nassar is accused of sexually abusing hundreds of gymnasts and athletes, from those he saw at his offices in Michigan State University to members of national, world and Olympic teams. The athletes say they were abused both at the national training center as well as in hotel rooms during competitions. He is currently serving an up to 175 year prison sentence in Michigan for sexual abuse charges.

Perry’s ouster was made more likely after U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) CEO Sarah Hirshland questioned Perry’s response to the concerns of survivors. Hirshland said to USA Today Sports it was “time to consider making adjustments in the leadership.” USA Gymnastics, as well as the USOC, still face lawsuits by many gymnasts, including members of the 2012 and 2016 Olympic teams, for failing to protect them from Nassar.

They maintain that they reported Nassar’s abuse to USA Gymnastics well before he was fired in 2015, but that the organization failed to immediately report the abuse to law enforcement.

Although many of the board members and other people in leadership positions at USAG during Nassar’s tenure either resigned or were fired, many survivors continued to question Perry’s lack of firm leadership and reluctance to take responsibility for the scandal and USAG’s role in it. Last week, Perry appointed Mary Lee Tracy as head development coach for the women’s elite team, a decision immediately criticized by the sexual abuse survivors, including Olympian Aly Raisman, who noted that Tracy had publicly supported Nassar even after many had already come forward accusing him of sexual abuse. Three days later, Tracy said on social media that she was asked by USAG to resign after attempting to contact Raisman.

Throughout her nine-month tenure, Perry only addressed the media once about the Nassar scandal, at a press conference held during the U.S. National Championships in August. Survivors, including Kyla Ross and Madison Kocian, the latest Olympians to come forward reporting sexual abuse by Nassar, say they have not received any support or apology from Perry or the federation. USAG maintains they are not permitted to speak to the survivors who are still in litigation with the organization.

Perry did terminate USAG’s relationship with Bela and Martha Karolyi, both of whom served as the women’s elite team national coordinator. She also cancelled USAG’s previous agreement to purchase the Karolyi ranch, which had been named as the national training center by her predecessor, Steve Penny. But the decision to cancel the monthly training sessions at the ranch came after Olympian Simone Biles tweeted last January about her abuse at the facility, and her reluctance to continue training there. USAG also has a new Athlete Task Force which is supposed to provide athletes with more access to leadership at the organization, but no Nassar survivors are part of the group.

Raisman and others have been vocal about the need for a complete change at the organization. Members of the gymnastics community have taken to social media in the wake of Perry’s departure, noting that people directly involved with covering up for Nassar remain at the organization, including chief operating officer Ron Gallimore, who the Indianapolis Star reported helped to provide cover stories for why Nassar was no longer working with USAG.

USAG appointed a management committee to run the federation as it conducts a search for a new CEO.

LiAngelo Ball left his JBA seat after seeing the Lakers drafted Svi Mykhailiuk over him

LiAngelo Ball’s hopes of hearing his named called during the NBA draft never came to fruition nor did he find a spot on an NBA Summer League roster. But despite heading into the draft with tempered expectations, the middle Ball brother was optimistic the Lakers would ultimately draft him. The latest episode of Ball in the Family detailed that draft night for LiAngelo. LaVar had scheduled his JBA league opener to coincide with the NBA draft, so LiAngelo was in the crowd to support his brother, LaMelo. Over Past 20 Years, The Percentage Of Children With ADHD Nearly Doubles

The number of children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has reached more than 10 percent, a significant increase during the past 20 years, according to a study released Friday.

The rise was most pronounced in minority groups, suggesting that better access to health insurance and mental health treatment through the Affordable Care Act might have played some role in the increase. The rate of diagnosis during that time period doubled in girls, although it was still much lower than in boys.

But the researchers say they found no evidence confirming frequent complaints that the condition is overdiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

The U.S. has significantly more instances of ADHD than other developed countries, which researchers said has led some to think Americans are overdiagnosing children. Dr. Wei Bao, the lead author of the study, said in an interview that a review of studies around the world doesn’t support that.

”I don’t think overdiagnosis is the main issue,” he said.

Nonetheless, those doubts persist. Dr. Stephen Hinshaw, who co-authored a 2014 book called “The ADHD Explosion: Myths, Medication, Money, and Today’s Push for Performance,” compared ADHD to depression. He said in an interview that neither condition has unequivocal biological markers, so it makes it hard to determine if a patient truly has the condition without lengthy psychological evaluations. Symptoms of ADHD can include inattention, fidgety behavior and impulsivity.

“It’s probably not a true epidemic of ADHD,” said Hinshaw, a professor of psychology at the University of California-Berkeley and a professor of psychiatry at UC-San Francisco. “It might be an epidemic of diagnosing it.”

In interpreting their results, however, the study’s authors tied the higher numbers to better understanding of the condition by doctors and the public, new standards for diagnosis and an increase in access to health insurance through the ACA.

Because of the ACA, “some low-income families have improved access to services and referrals,” said Bao, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, used data from the National Health Interview Survey, an annual federal survey of about 35,000 households. It found a steady increase in diagnoses among children from about 6 percent of children between 1997 and 1998 to more than 10 percent between 2015 and 2016.

Advances in medical technology also may have contributed to the increase, according to the research. Twenty years ago, preterm or low-weight babies had a harder time surviving. Those factors increase the risk of being diagnosed with ADHD.

The study also suggests that fewer stigmas about mental health care in minority communities may also lead to more people receiving an ADHD diagnosis.

In the late 1990s, 7.2 percent of non-Hispanic white children, 4.7 percent of non-Hispanic black children and 3.6 of Hispanic children were diagnosed with ADHD, according to the study.

By 2016, it was 12 percent of white kids, 12.8 percent of blacks and 6.1 percent of Hispanics.

Over the past several decades, Hinshaw said, there’s been an expanded view of who can develop ADHD. It’s no longer viewed as a disease that affects only white middle-class boys, as eating disorders are no longer seen as afflicting only white middle-class girls.

Still, he cautioned against overdiagnosing ADHD in communities where behavioral issues could be the result of social or environmental factors such as overcrowded classrooms.

The study found rates of ADHD among girls rose from 3 to more than 6 percent over the study period. It said that was partly a result of a change in how the condition is classified. For years, ADHD pertained to children who were hyperactive. But in recent years, the American Psychiatric Association added to its guide of mental health conditions that diagnosis should also include some children who are inattentive, Bao said. That raised the number of girls, he explained, because it seems they are more likely to be in that second subtype.

“If we compare these two, you can easily imagine people will easily recognize hyperactivity,” he said.

That rang true for Ruth Hay, a 25-year-old student and cook from New York who now lives in Jerusalem. She was diagnosed with what was then called ADD the summer between second and third grade.

Hay said her hyperactive tendencies aren’t as “loud” as some people’s. She’s less likely to bounce around a room than she is to bounce in her chair, she said.

Yet despite her early diagnosis, Hay said, no one ever told her about other symptoms. For example, she said, she suffers from executive dysfunction, which leaves her feeling unable to accomplish tasks, no matter how much she wanted to or tried.

“I grew up being called lazy in periods of time when I wasn’t,” Hay said. “If you look at a list of all the various ADHD symptoms, I have all of them to one degree or another, but the only ones ever discussed with me was you might be less focused and more fidgety.”

“I don’t know how my brain would be if I didn’t have it,” she added. “I don’t know if I’d still be me, but all it has been for me is a disability.”

Andy Murray and Fernando Verdasco Are Having a Heated Disagreement Over the U.S. Open Heat Break Rule

Fernando Verdasco sent Andy Murray home at the 2018 U.S. Open on Wednesday, but not without a clash about the heat rule at the U.S. Open that continued to cause controversy.

England’s Murray and Spain’s Verdasco faced off in their at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City on Wednesday night which saw Verdasco besting Murray in the match 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

It was a scorcher with temperatures closing in on 100 degrees Farenheight, and both players took a beat during the heat break when they were tied in the second round.

Under the new stipulation, players can pause to rehydrate and cool off. But they’re strictly prohibited from speaking with their coaches, something Murray told reporters he witnessed Verdasco doing. Verdasco has denied this.

“[Verdasco] was having an ice bath,” Murray said during his postmatch news conference. “When I came out of the shower, his coach and his…I don’t know if he’s playing doubles with him, but one of the Spanish doubles players….was in there chatting to him, and you’re not allowed to speak to your coach. I went and told the supervisor.”

Murray said he raised the issue with the supervisor. “What are you guys doing? I mean, there’s clear rules here, and you’re allowing this to take place. I don’t get it. They obviously weren’t in there for long, but you got to do better than that. This is one of the biggest events in the world. If you have rules like that, you need to stick with them because one player getting to speak to the coach and the other not is not fair.”

The two tennis greats’ accounts differ. “I know the rule exactly. I didn’t speak anything to any member of my team,” Verdasco said in a post-match conference.

Murray has struggled with an ongoing hip injury, and this marked his return since his last match in 2016. As the tennis star bowed out of the Open, he shared remarks in an Instagram post that worked in a jab at Verdasco. “I’m off to get a health check as apparently I’ve started imagining things #liarliarpantsonfire,” the caption read.

Big-Time Companies Dish Out Over $240 Million to Black Law Firms, Other Minority Firms

Representing one of their largest contribution ever, member companies of the Inclusion Initiative spent more than $ 240 million last year with black law firms and other minority firms including women-owned (MWBE) law firms.

The fresh figure was provided this month by the Inclusion Initiative, a collaborative program among law departments at big U.S. corporations focused on promoting diversity spending. The amount is a $ 14 million increase from the $ 226 million allotted to MWBE firms in 2016.

The total dollar volume participating law departments have distributed to MWBE firms has eclipsed $ 200 million every year since 2012. The number also is a hefty gain from $ 42 million, which was spent on the firms in 2010 when the initiative started. Since the program’s inception, participating companies have generated more than $ 1.4 billion in expenditures on MWBE law firms.

“Minority and women-owned law firms have a substantial role in creating a pipeline for diverse lawyers,” said Ann Kappler, senior vice president and deputy general counsel of Prudential Financial Inc., a founding company of the Inclusion Initiative in a press release. “Programs like the Inclusion Initiative have a multiplier effect as the program has grown it has made a meaningful, positive impact on our target firms and the legal profession more broadly.”

Since its launch, participation in the Inclusion Initiative has nearly tripled to 33 members. The current roster of participating companies includes: 3M, Accenture, Allstate, American Airlines, AT&T, Bank of America, CenterPoint Energy, The Coca-Cola Co., Comcast, Exelon, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., General Mills, GlaxoSmithKline, Google, JPMorgan Chase, McDonald’s Corp., Macy’s, Merck, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, Nationwide, NBCUniversal, Prudential Financial, Sempra Energy, Shell Oil Co., State Farm, Target, Toyota Financial Services, UPS, Verizon, Walmart, Wells Fargo, and Xerox.

The Inclusion Initiative is administered by the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF), which comprises over 193 certified MWBE law firms in 44 states.

“Corporate members of the Inclusion Initiative are a testament to the adage of putting thought into action,” said William Delgado, Inclusion Initiative Task Force co-chair and board member of NAMWOLF. “The commitment exhibited by each company helps ensure the success of minority and women-owned law firms and furthers the important mission of diversifying the legal profession. NAMWOLF is excited about its continued collaboration with the Inclusion Initiative for years to come.”

Additionally, there are hundreds of other companies giving MWBE firms the opportunity to compete and win business that is not reflected in the numbers, officials say. They maintain those companies should consider connecting with NAMWOLF so they can gain exposure to its member firms. The reason: Those member firms are involved in several practice areas handling work for Fortune 500 companies and governmental entities.

Black law firms are scarce. According to data from the American Bar Association, African Americans make up 5% of the active, practicing attorneys in 2018. A report from 2015 shows that even in a diverse metropolis such as New York City, black attorneys only account for 4% of associates and 2% of partners at law firms.

Cardi B Apologizes To Bernice King Over ‘Real Civil Rights Housewives’ Skit

Can’t say we didn’t see this one coming. We’re talking about the reaction Dr. Bernice King is having to Cardi B‘s portrayal of Coretta Scott King in a skit from Wild ‘N Out star Rip Michaels’ new show, Off the Rip.

Micheals says no harm was meant and that Cardi B shouldn’t take the brunt of the blame.

Dr. Bernice King — the youngest child of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King — has responded to Cardi’s portrayal of her mother, calling it “repulsive” and “false” … and very, very badly timed as today (08-28-18) is the 55th anniversary of MLK’s March on Washington where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

Bernice says Cardi is using a platform that her parents made possible in an atrocious way. She wants to talk to Cardi face-to-face. And it appears that’s going to happen because Cardi has reached out to Bernice, according to King.

Here’s more from TMZ:

Cardi stepped into the role of Martin Luther King Jr.’s late wife for a skit called “Real Housewives of the Civil Rights Movement.” Yes, she went there … spilling tea with Rosa Parks and the wives of Malcolm X and Jesse Jackson. There’s also a jaw-dropping “Iggy Azalea” sighting.

You gotta watch, but fair warning … there are multiple references to MLK’s infamous infidelities, and even the trip to Memphis, where he was assassinated.

The sketch is part of “Wild ‘N Out” star Rip Michaels’ new show, “Off the Rip.” As we told you, it also features Cardi delivering “Ho Etiquette” jokes that some call racist.

Nope, it’s guaranteed to NOT even get nominated for an NAACP Image Award.

Martin Luther King III weighed in as well:

Is there anything funny about this skit?

Duchess Meghan Is ‘Still Anxious’ Over Her Father Thomas Markle

Duchess Meghan still worries about what her father, Thomas Markle, might do — or say — next.

“She is still anxious wondering if this will go on forever,” a source tells Us Weekly exclusively. “She’s worrying about when it will stop, or if it even will.”

Ever since Thomas, 74, got caught staging photos with the paparazzi ahead of Meghan and Prince Harry’s May nuptials, the former lightning director has made numerous comments bashing the British royal family, including calling his 37-year-old daughter’s relatives “cult-like” and “like Scientologists or the Stepford family” earlier this month. Thomas, who did not attend the royal wedding, also claimed in July that Meghan looked “terrified” and had a “pained smile” during her outings with Harry, 33.

An insider told Us last month that Meghan “lives in fear” that Thomas will “leak” their conversation if she was to reach out to her estranged parent.

“Meghan is so upset over Thomas. She’s upset for a couple of reasons. She doesn’t even know how to communicate with her dad without knowing he won’t exploit her,” the insider revealed on July 20. “She would like to speak to him, but there is no trust there anymore. And it doesn’t seem like it could ever be rebuilt. The damage is done.”

While Meghan may still have issues with her dad, the first source tells Us that her relationship with Harry is “incredible.”

“Her and Harry are truly madly in love,” the source says. “He’s so supportive of her.”

The source adds that the duchess “is still trying to get used to her life there,” but she was prepared for her responsibilities to change when she and Harry wed.

“Her life is dedicated to the monarch – and she knew that going into this,” the source explains. “She doesn’t have much time for anything else.”

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

Child Marriage Isn’t Just Happening “Over There”

The thought is heartbreaking: an 11-year old girl, forced to marry a man several years her senior who sexually abused her, drops out of school and bears five children by the time she is 17. She is a child with adult responsibilities—but a minor in the eyes of the law.

The story of this crime doesn’t take place in Afghanistan or Niger: It is set in Florida. Child marriage, where one or both parties are under the age of 18, affects 650 million women and 150 million men worldwide—including the United States and Europe. That’s one girl every 23 seconds.

This June, close to 500 advocates, activists, survivors, practitioners and donors gathered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the global meeting of Girls Not Brides, an international coalition dedicated to ending child marriage. We met to dissect and deliberate the root causes of and solutions to child marriage—and while, as Americans, we like to think of ourselves immune to many of the world’s most pressing concerns, what we heard about the ways in which child marriage impacts girls in other countries resonated with our work on this issue right here in the United States.

Oumou Salif of Mali marks her country of the world map in The Village on the third day at the Girls Not Brides Global Meeting 2018 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. (Graham Crouch / Girls Not Brides)

Worldwide, UNICEF estimates that child marriage rates are going down, and that approximately 25 million child marriages were prevented in the last decade. This is incredible progress on an issue many thought both untouchable and unchangeable 10 years ago. The decline in the numbers of girls and boys getting married as children is due to the efforts of many, but global pressure must continue if we are to end this practice for good.

Child marriage is recognized as a human rights abuse, one which often violates girls’ rights to health and education, and which can trap them in a cycle of poverty and violence. It has enormous consequences for the girls themselves, but also for their communities and the economy. While both boys and girls are married as children, girls bear a greater burden: The health and well-being of girls who marry as children is worse, both in the near- and long-term, than those of their peers who are able to delay marriage until they are at least 18.

It is often difficult to be a global leader in a movement when our own domestic policies and practices do not match our foreign policy rhetoric. In the United States, efforts to reform minimum age of marriage laws have been met with mixed results. As advocates focused on child marriage at the global and national levels, our objectives going into the meeting were quite different, but we came away feeling more united than ever.

For the most part, we already know how to “solve” child marriage: Empower girls with information, skills and support networks; provide economic support and incentives to girls and their families; educate and rally parents and community members; enhance girls’ access to a high-quality education; and encourage supportive laws and policies.

If we have the solutions, why is this still an issue?

Again and again at the Global Meeting, Girls Not Brides members the world over mentioned the same impediments to progress: a lack of concerted funding to tackle child marriage, closing civil society spaces and resistance from politicians, religious and cultural leaders.

Laws, and their consistent enforcement, are a key piece of the multisector approach that is necessary to end child marriage. In almost all 50 states and the District of Columbia, child marriage is legal. The Tahirih Justice Center has been working tirelessly to encourage the adoption of minimum age of marriage laws that set the age of marriage at 18 without exceptions for both boys and girls, but despite meaningful progress in several states—Virginia, Texas, New York and Kentucky—and two new bright-line laws in Delaware and New Jersey making 18 the minimum age of marriage without exceptions, progress on state-by-state legislation has been a long and often difficult road.

Legislative progress often moves slower than advocates would hope, but we can see that change is possible. Indeed, it is happening: the number of people marrying before the age of 18 in the United States fell by about 61 percent between 2000 and 2010. Still, data collected from 41 states showed that between 2000 and 2015, well over 200,000 children under age 18 were married in America.

At the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), we recently conducted a study with the World Bank which showed that child marriage will cost the global economy trillions of dollars by 2030. For a country like Niger, where 76 percent of girls marry before they become adults—the highest rate of child marriage globally—the practice has led to a loss of $ 188 million in earnings. Were child marriage to be eliminated, the annual benefit would be equal to $ 1.7 billion.

By way of comparison, Florida, which has a population roughly equal to that of Niger, 16,486 children were married between 2000 and 2015. The majority of those married were underage girls marrying adult men. While harrowing stories like that of Sherry Johnson may be fewer in Florida, the impacts are no less damaging than they are in Niger for girls like Hamsatou.

Since 2012, 15 countries have raised the age of marriage to 18 or removed exceptions that allow minors to marry before the age of 18. The U.S. should be a leader in ending the practice of child marriage both at home and abroad.—but unfortunately, the U.S. government was not represented among major donors contributing to the newly launched Girls First Fund, nor were its officials present at the Girls Not Brides Global Meeting. The serious lack of funding for and attention to child marriage prevention domestically and overseas means that girls everywhere, from Maryland to Mali, are not receiving the protection, services and support they need to avoid or leave marriages they do not want.

Our willingness to turn a blind eye to the issue must end. The U.S. can and must address the needs of girls at home and abroad simultaneously. We can do better than this—but we need support from Congress, USAID, the State Department and state legislatures to do so.

Together, we can end child marriage wherever it occurs and empower girls to live free and full lives where they marry only whom, when and if they choose.

Rachel Clement is a Policy Advocate for ICRW and a co-chair for Girls Not Brides USA, the U.S.-based partnership to end child marriage.

Casey Carter Swegman is the Forced Marriage Initiative Project Manager for Tahirih Justice Center and also leads the Forced Marriage Working Group, a coalition of advocates and allies from around the U.S. dedicated to creating a coordinated national response to the problem of forced marriage in the country.

13 Most Over and Underrated Dress Shirts for Men

For many men, dress shirts are an essential part of their wardrobe. It’s probably one of the first things they put on in the morning before they go to work.

There’s an endless choice between colors, fits, collar styles, cuff styles, and lots of other details that you can and must choose. At the moment, I have about 100 dress shirts in my collection and over the years, I had many more. I sold them and got new ones and so I learned a thing or two about dress shirts.

Overrated Shirts

A Pink dress shirt must be worn with extra attention to details

To key to wearing pink is finding a shade that suits you

1. Pink Shirts

In my experience, pink shirts or a hit or miss. They can look well if you have a good tan and if the pink is quite light. They look really bad if it’s a strong pink and if you choose the wrong accessories. Most people don’t associate the color pink with masculinity and so if you wear that color, you definitely make a statement. In my experience, pink works against you and is overrated when the only purpose of wearing it is to get attention.

On the other hand, if you wear a very pale pink shirt because it’s part of the combination, it’s softer than a white shirt and it just shows that you’re comfortable with the way you wear it, then it can actually work in your favor. If you decide to wear pink shirts, try to stay with solid colors that are very pale, avoid bold pink stripes because that’s over-the-top in terms of color and pattern. Also, if you want to wear pink shirts, make sure to tone down the other items in your outfit specifically the accessories.

Avoid widespread Cutaway Shirt Collars

Avoid widespread Cutaway Shirt Collars

2. Extreme Cutaway Collars

These white collars have been quite popular with brands like Ralph Lauren, they are still around today and people wear them a lot. It’s definitely an extreme look and if you wear a neckwear of any form, it just doesn’t work in your favor. If you go with a regular necktie, you can see the band on the side and just looks odd unless you tie an extremely big Balthus knot which ends up in a very short tie, which looks odd too.

If you wear a bow tie, on the other hand, the bowtie usually covers up the area of the collar so you can’t really see the extreme cutaway style of the collar. When you wear a suit with a dress shirt in that collar and a tie, you truly create Vs or inverted Vs. When you have this extreme cutaway collar, it kind of throws off that balance and usually, it looks odd. I definitely have a few extreme cutaway collared shirts in my wardrobe but I find that I usually only wear them without a tie or with a bow tie because with the regular tie, it just looks weird.

3. Non-Iron Shirts

I get it, most men think of ironing shirts is a huge pain in the behind, so of course, if someone promises you a non-iron shirt, you are naturally interested in it. The problem is most dress shirts are made out of cotton and cotton inherently wrinkles. To prevent cotton from wrinkling after it’s being laundered, you need to really work on the fiber itself and treat it with many chemicals including formaldehyde. Now when you do that, even a high-end cotton doesn’t stay soft and luxurious anymore. It becomes cheap and also less absorbent. It almost has a plasticky feel and touch. The problem is when you wash the shirt a dozen or two dozen times, the non-ironing properties are literally washed away and you still end up having to iron your shirt in order to get a clean, crisp dress shirt.

The Eton Shirt Assembly Line

The Eton Shirt Assembly Line

The only company that I’ve found that provides a shirt that stays wrinkle resistant for a long time, which doesn’t mean it’s non-iron, but you need to iron it less is from Eton in Sweden. Unfortunately, these shirts cost about $ 300 each or more which makes it unaffordable for most men out there. In collaboration with the high-end Swiss shirt cloth maker Alumo, they’ve developed an exclusive process that allows them to create a wrinkle-resistant fabric that has fewer chemicals than a cup of black tea. I do have one of their shirts and I’ve had it for years and it really does a good job so when I travel and I need something where I know I may not have the chance to iron, I bring it along, otherwise, I stick with regular shirts because again, you get a custom shirt that costs less than an off-the-rack shirt from Eton.

Do you find this monogrammed shirt classy?

Do you find this monogrammed shirt classy?

4. Visible Monograms

Originally, monograms on dress shirts or garments were used to identify the owner. Oftentimes, people had staff and shirts were usually white so it was hard to determine whose shirt it was. A little monogram on a shirt told the valet whose it was and so everyone would have the proper shirt that they could wear and that would fit. In recent years, online custom shirts and regular custom shirts have become increasingly popular which provided the option to add monograms. Now for a lot of people, this is kind of a status symbol and they want to show off that they’re wealthy enough to afford a custom-made shirt or a shirt that was made for them.

Unwanted Monogrammed Cuff

Unwanted Monogrammed Cuff

Back in the day, a shirt monogram was stitched either by hand or by machine at around your waistband so it was never visible to anyone. It was simply there for the people who did the laundry and your valet. Today, people are placing the monogram on their shirt cuff, ideally in a contrasting thread, so everyone can see that they can buy a bespoke shirt. In my opinion, it’s gaudy on the one hand and showing off is never part of a gentleman’s personality. Now, there’s nothing wrong with having a shirt monogram; if you want to have that, I suggest getting it in the original place which is just on the left side on the waistband around that level. You can also get into tone in tone so if you have a white shirt, you can get a white monogram, so only you know it’s there and no one else. Maybe you could even have it monogrammed on the inside of your collar band, that way, no one will ever see it other than you and your partner and it’s a nice thing to have but it’s not showy at all and very gentlemanly.

Floral dress shirt

Floral dress shirt

5. Bold Printed Patterns

I’m not talking about stripes or classic patterns like checks, I’m talking about bold floral and paisley prints which have become increasingly popular in recent years. Technological advances and changes in fashion have allowed dress shirts to become a lot louder and more vibrant. I think it’s a trend that won’t stick around and it’s something that is popular now but probably 10-15 years from now, other things will have come and gone, but your solids, your checks, and your stripes, will remain in your wardrobe, you’ll be able to wear them, whereas the floral print is probably something that would look very dated at that point.

An untucked dress shirt looks downright sloppy

An untucked dress shirt looks downright sloppy

6. Dress Shirts That Are Meant To Be Worn Untucked

Honestly, I see it all the time when I go to parties or in the airplane catalog. People promote and wear dress shirts that are not tucked in. Now traditionally, a dress shirt was cut so it was longer in the back and front so it was less likely to come untucked, but it is also shorter on the sides so it looks extremely unflattering when it gets untucked. For example, if you want a summery casual linen shirt that you can wear untucked, you want a hem that is cut evenly, however, there are a lot of people out there who want to wear dress shirts but want to appear more casual and then they wear these untucked shirts in combination with a jacket and it just looks weird.

Why? Because the shirt sticks out from underneath the buttoning point which is never advantageous. Personally, I don’t like untucked shirts and even my summery shirts are ones that I can tuck in but I wear with a belt because it provides a visual contrast that is pleasing to the eye. My long torso can be shortened by creating a visually longer leg line. So if you want to wear shirts untucked, I suggest to go with polo shirts and to stick with tucked in shirts when you go with dress shirts. If you want to go with untucked shirts, keep it to very casual occasions and never pair it with a jacket.

Ruby red dress shirt

Ruby red dress shirt

7. Jewel Tone Dress Shirts

What I mean by that is very extreme and bold colors that I usually see worn by men who are very new to clothing who think they need to make a bold statement with the choice of shirt color so they end up getting a vibrant ruby red shirt, something that is extremely pink, turquoise, blue. It’s very vibrant and may be suitable for a techno party but it’s nothing you should ever add to a classically inspired wardrobe. Why? Because they’re too bold, they’re hard to combine with other accessories and they simply scream cheap and I don’t know what I’m doing.

Short sleeve dress shirts are a huge fashion faux pas

Short sleeve dress shirts are a huge fashion faux pas

8. Short-Sleeved Dress Shirts

If you live in a warmer climate or you suffer from hot summers, you may be prone to wear a short-sleeved shirt underneath your jacket. The problem is you won’t see the sleeves and so it would always look weird and orphaned because traditionally, a jacket looks better if you show a little bit of shirt cuff that usually matches the amount of shirt collar you see in the back of your jacket. On top of that, wearing a short-sleeved dress shirt with a necktie makes you look like a little schoolboy.

Short sleeved shirts are never a good plan

Short-sleeved shirts are never a good plan

In my opinion, there’s not a real place for short-sleeved dress shirts in a man’s wardrobe because if you want to go casual, opt for a polo shirt or maybe a Henley shirt. Both of them are short-sleeved, you can get them with a proper collar even like a shirt style collar, and they are something that just looks good, they’re meant to be worn that way. A dress shirt, on the other hand, usually has sleeves, it has the button front. If it’s too hot, you can just roll up your shirt sleeves and you can roll them back down. So actually, there’s no real need for short sleeve dress shirt unless maybe you’re a four-year-old boy.

Underrated Shirts

9. Pastel Colored Dress Shirts

Most men out there buy white shirts and light blue shirts. While white and blue built the foundation of any gentleman’s dress shirt closet, pastel colors can really help to add a note of individuality to your outfits without being over the top. When I say pastel, I mean tones that are very soft and just have a hint or a hue of color that is different than white.

For example, you can go with a very pale yellow, a pale green, a pale pink, a pale lavender, and these tones help to tie together accessories and overall, they’re very easy to combine, they make your outfits, your suits, and accessories look different without being over-the-top. You can also wear it with much more casual combinations such as a sport coat or a tweed coat where a white dress shirt would be too stark and would provide too much contrast.

A few of Sven Raphael's striped dress shirts

A few of Sven Raphael’s striped dress shirts

10. Striped Dress Shirts

Stripes are very popular in dress shirts for men, particularly some that come in blue on a white background, or maybe in white on a blue background. You can find them in slightly different sizes going all the way from superfine to medium to bolder but it’s very hard to find a bolder stripe in a different color or a bolder stripe that is just much bigger. Usually, you have to go custom but once you have shirts like that in your wardrobe, it’s really easy to spice up that solid suit

So if you have a lot of solid jackets in your wardrobe, I strongly suggest investing in a few bolder striped shirts. If you don’t know where to start, I suggest going with a white and blue stripe that is bolder because that’s closest to what most people are comfortable with but then down the line, I really encourage you to be a little more daring and go with different colors such as green, orange, or yellow.

Winchester shirt with Wool Challis Navy Bow Tie with White Polka dots paired with Blue Cornflower Boutonniere Buttonhole Flower Silk – Handmade by Fort Belvedere

11. Winchester Shirts

What I mean by that is a shirt with a contrasting white collar on a different colored shirt body. That can either be a solid such as gray or it can be a stripe but the mix of that white collar gives you the resemblance of a classic white dress shirt and when you wear a jacket, you only have that V that shows a little bit of the stripe. You can either have the cuffs be matching the collar in white or have the cuffs match the shirt body; the choice is up to you.

Prince Charles in his 3 piece morning suit with black silk top hat & winchester shirt with cornflower boutonniere

Prince Charles in his 3 piece morning suit with black silk top hat & winchester shirt with cornflower boutonniere

Personally, I prefer having matching cuffs and collar that contrasts the shirt body. Winchester shirts are particularly suited for businesswear, they’re not casual wear and you can even wear it with a formal morning coat ensemble, you can wear it to a wedding, or to just a board meeting. So if you don’t have a Winchester shirt in your wardrobe yet, I suggest you invest in one. Start out maybe with a solid color such as light blue and later on, you can advance to stripes, maybe checks, or other things.

Open Weave Horizontal Stripe Shirt

Open Weave Horizontal Stripe Shirt

12. Open Weave Cloth Dress Shirts

Most shirts in the market today come in a medium heavy weave that is quite tight, however, during the summer, an open weave shirt is much more pleasant to wear because it allows a lot more air to your skin. That way, you’re less prone to sweating, you stay cooler, and you are just more comfortable. The problem is most over the rack shirts do not offer those fabrics and even a lot of custom makers don’t offer those fabrics. So if you go to Italy, in the areas where it’s quite warm, all the bespoke shirt makers will have those fabrics because they know how comfortable they can be and they’re just a godsend.

Personally, I have a range of different open weave dress shirts and sometimes they’re so open that my chest hair pokes through so they are not meant for a super formal board meeting but that aside, they’re extremely comfortable in all kinds of summer situations where you want to stay as cool as possible. Pair that with a fresco jacket or other open weave suiting fabrics and you stay a lot cooler than in a regular suit with a regular dress shirt.

Wearing a collar pin is something you should consider if you want the classic look

Wearing a collar pin is something you should consider if you want the classic look

13. Pin Collar Shirts

In the 90s, when power suits were popular, a lot of people would wear tab collars and pin collars. In recent years, they’ve fallen somewhat out of favor but it’s a great way to add a different accessory to your outfit that elevates your tie knot and makes you look a little more debonair. So what is a pin collared shirt? Pin collared shirts are essential for collar bars because with those, you can just pin a hole into your shirt collar.

If you have a safety collar pin, you can in theory, just punch a hole into any kind of shirt collar and while that works, I suggest to get a pin collar shirt because you can use it with a bar you can even use it with a clip and particularly with a safety pin, it always looks good . It just looks sophisticated and different from what other people wear yet it’s not a very loud and ostentatious.

If you want to buy a pin collared shirt, I suggest you get a custom shirt; even online custom shirtmakers offer them today. It’s just important to place the hole at the right height and ideally, you want it very close to the edge of the shirt collar, otherwise, you can’t wear it with certain items such as a safety pin and it usually looks best when it’s kind of in the middle of the collar vertically, that way, you just get the nice look and you still have enough space for your tie knot and overall, you create a harmonious outfit that is quite unique.

Netflix Exec Breaks Silence Over Aziz Ansari Controversy: ‘Happy’ to Keep Making ‘Master of None’

Netflix

Beverly Hills, CALIFORNIA — “I don’t have anything to share with you today.”

That was the most common refrain from Netflix vice president of original series Cindy Holland as TV critics and journalists grilled her about some of the biggest names the streaming service recently wooed, including the Obamas and black-ish creator Kenya Barris.

With respect to Barack and Michelle Obama, who signed a deal in May to produce shows and deals for Netflix, Holland said it is too early in the deal to have an update on what their content might look like. When the deal was announced, it was vaguely teased that the former president and first lady would produce “scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features” centering around issues that were important to them in office. No financial terms are known, though, for context, a deal with Ryan Murphy made in February was estimated to be worth $ 250-300 million.

So long, Star Wars episodes: The Skywalker saga is officially over

TwitterFacebook

One thing we know: the Star Wars must end. Well, the Star Wars as we know them, at least.

Buried in the official announcement of the Star Wars Episode IX cast — masked by fan euphoria over the confirmed return of Mark Hamill (presumably as Luke Skywalker’s Force ghost) and Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, behind the heart-rending detail that unseen footage of Carrie Fisher will be used to help send off General Leia Organa — was this all-important detail.

The Skywalker saga, that episodic tale blasted onto screens around the world since 1977, will cease with this movie’s release in 2019.  Read more…

Their Lips Aren’t Sealed: The Go-Go’s Score a Queer Broadway Hit in ‘Head Over Heels’

Courtesy Joan Marcus

The Broadway pop and rock takeover—soon to bring us three versions of Cher in one musical—continues with an excellent show devoted to the back catalog of The Go-Go’s.

Not that Head Over Heels, directed with a warm, zany energy by Michael Mayer, is a conventional jukebox musical following the rise, success, splintering and later reuniting of the group itself.

Instead, in Jeff Whitty’s creation (he wrote the original book, adapted later by James Magruder), the songs of the The Go-Go’s are threaded through an Elizabethan romance based on The Arcadia by Sir Philip Sidney written near the end of the 16th century.

Waves Not Plastic Gets Involved in Projects All Over The World

Our mission at Waves Not Plastic is to bring awareness to plastic pollution through passion!  This organization has been established for ocean enthusiasts like you to make a difference in communities around the world.  We strive to clean up our oceans and change the tide on how our world refuses, reuses, reduces, and recycles.  Make the pledge and refuse single-use plastic. Do what you love, take care of the environment and make a difference!

Morocco, Africa

The brand educates local ocean enthusiasts. Morocco possess an amazing population of second generation surfers. Their warm and welcoming personalities combined with their love for the ocean and surfing, provide access to a valuable resource and partnership.

They also inspire traveling surfers. International travelers love to visit the beautiful country of Morocco. Comfortable weather, perfect surf, and the amazing hospitality shared by the locals draws thousands of surfers every year. Countless days are spent surfing world class waves while an unsightly amount of plastic washes upon the shores. Why not return the stoke from perfect waves and help our oceans?  After surfing all morning, spend that next hour after lunch waiting for the tide to change and pitch in.

They are also involved in global beach cleanups. A primary objective of WavesNotPlastic.org is to organize and manage beach cleanups in impacted areas.  With the support and assistance of Moroccan Surf Adventures we have applied resources in Morocco, Africa, to create community involvement and assist in cleaning our shorelines.

The locals are also educated on the use of single use plastics and these countries are provided water purification systems. Traveling to a far off destination and unsure about the drinking water? Single use water bottles suck and really stack up. Even if the surf is small you can still find ways to play in the water. Waves Not Plastic .org in action!  Two separate purification systems showcased in the video to the right, both no larger then a reusable canteen – both carry on approved.  No chemicals needed! Making a difference at camp with Moroccan Surf Adventures.

Nicaragua, Central America

As an organization, our primary goal is to educate and encourage individuals to get involved and make a difference.  The first thing that I noticed in Nicaragua was a young generation of surfers with a passion for the ocean.

A unique correlation was that the livelihood of their families depended on the ocean environment.  From fisherman to small business owners, the success of their careers was directly affected by the health of the ocean.

However, I also noticed a major problem.  These same individuals who love spending time surfing in the ocean were not doing a good job of taking care of this precious resource.  Garbage was thrown into creeks that directly feed into the ocean.  Waste was discarded on beaches and left for the tide to wash it out to sea.

These bad habits were not acted upon out of a dislike for the ocean, they were due to a lack of education and understanding on the harmful effects of pollution and plastic in the natural environment.

Similar to our work in Northern Africa, an education platform was developed and shared with these local ocean enthusiasts.  The solution: find a common platform that inspires these individuals to make a difference.  The answer was simple.  SURFING!

Youth surf camps and competitions –

Learning can be fun, and what better way to teach surfers than to go surfing?  Our education and outreach program picked up speed in Nicaragua by hosting a beach cleanup and surf contest for the local kids.  Waves Not Plastic produced a Surf Contest at Remanso beach that kicked off with both locals and traveling surfers participating in a beach cleanup.  The event was a success and the message was clear, “Do what you love and give back along the way.”

The kids hit the beach to clean things up and then hit the water to showcase the incredible talent of Nicaraguan surfers.  Everyone left the beach that day with something special, including first place finisher Diego and his new surfboard, compliments of Used Surfboards Hawaii.

“I will never forget this special experience and the stoke that these young kids shared for the ocean.  While surfing a few days later with some of the kids that participated in the event, a young surfer paddled up to me, pulled a piece of plastic out of his pocket that he had collected from the water and handed it to me with a huge smile on his face. ”  – Jeff Lenore

Founder / CEO, Waves Not Plastic .org

California, North America

California is our home.  It’s where we grew up surfing.  Fortunately, California possesses an incredible wealth of environmental organizations that are currently operating in the Golden State.  One of our favorite projects at Waves Not Plastic is to assist these organizations in protecting and healing ocean environments.

Our platform in California consists of developing an education and outreach program.  With the assistance of our friends we have teamed up with some outstanding organizations to make a difference in our communities.

Our mission is to bring awareness to plastic pollution through passion!  Fortunately we have a few friends who don’t mind getting stoked. The team at Waves Not Plastic joined our friends at San Francisco Surfrider and some incredible local organizations to produce a beach cleanup focused around a  fun event.

Join Waves Not Plastic as we support the California Coastal Commission in celebrating  California Coastal Day.  We will be hitting the beach to produce a fun-filled afternoon focused around another great beach cleanup.  Bring your friends as we enjoy surfing, yoga, and a day of fun on the beach.

Rihanna Has Reportedly Accumulated Over 500 Songs for Her Upcoming Dancehall Album: ‘They’re Only Choosing 10 Records’

A new Rihanna album is on the way!

According to a new report from Rolling Stone, Rih has been hard at work crafting the sound of her upcoming dancehall-inspired album and has amassed over 500 songs in the process.

A Vogue profile first mentioned that Rihanna was working on a dancehall album back in May.

via Rolling Stone:

It’s common for stars at Rihanna’s level to cull the best demos from reams of submissions when selecting songs for albums. “[Rihanna’s team] have, no lie, 500 records for this project [from] different producers and writers,” explains one dancehall producer who asked to remain anonymous. “They’re only choosing 10 records. They’ve been having writing camps and trying to keep them quiet for almost a year and a half now. I’ve been flying to Miami, flying to L.A., cutting records nonstop for this project.”

“Every artist, every producer, every songwriter in Jamaica or of Jamaican descent has been working on [Rihanna’s album] and has little snippets of publishing or production credits on it,” another source close to the project says. “I think they’ve got eight songs,” he continues, “but her A&R is still asking for records.” “They’re looking for one more [song],” adds a third source with knowledge of the album-making process.

Through a rep, Rihanna declined to comment on the new album.

If Rihanna’s team likes a submission, they will do “some tweaking,” according to a second producer. “I didn’t even get the final [version of the song I turned in],” the producer adds. “I got the semi-final, and then I got the contracts. They ask my opinions, but you wouldn’t expect Rihanna to work with people that don’t do good work – they did some good work on it.”

But another producer who submitted material for the album worries the star is diluting the Caribbean aspects of the music. “Their whole thing was, ‘Yo, we’re gonna make this [album] real dancehall, [real] Caribbean,’” says the producer. “Rihanna is Bajan, so let’s make this a full project like that. To me, it hasn’t been going that way. They’re kind of mixing it up, putting in the pop. If the reggae artists and producers won’t get the chance on the pop album, at least let us survive on the dancehall album. They’re changing up the direction continuously.“

Our bodies are READY! You can read more about Rihanna’s album process here.

Wrestlers Sue Ohio State Over Late Doctor’s Sexual Misconduct

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — A lawsuit by four former Ohio State University wrestlers alleges the school failed to stop “rampant sexual misconduct” by a now-dead team doctor despite being repeatedly informed about his behavior.

In the federal lawsuit filed Monday, four Ohio men listed as John Does say Richard Strauss sexually assaulted or harassed them in the late 1980s or 1990s. The wrestlers’ lawsuit seeks unspecified monetary damages.

The university didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment Tuesday.

An independent investigation about Strauss began after such allegations were raised earlier this year. Ohio State says the allegations involve men from 14 sports

Strauss worked for the university for two decades, retiring in 1998. He killed himself in 2005.

His family has said they were “shocked and saddened” to learn of the allegations.
