Best places to visit for people who love biking

One reason why so many people love biking is because it’s just them and the open road. All a cyclist needs to have a great time is their bike and time to ride it. If you’ve completely fallen in love with biking and want to take your hobby to the next level, then why not try a biking vacation? Check out these places which are perfect for bike lovers.

The Danube Bike Path, Austria

If you really want to get committed to riding every day, you could check out the Danube Bike Path that runs along the famous Austrian river. There are over 200 miles of pathway that takes you all along the Danube with plenty of pit stops to take in the culture.

There are a couple of big hotspots to take in along the route as you set off from Passau in Germany to Vienna, Austria. You won’t have to worry about going hungry because there are plenty of cafes and bars for you to stop off at, with a good selection of hotels on the water too.

The Danube Bike Path

Villefranche-sur-Mer, France

If you’re going to go on a biking vacation, then why not head to the spiritual home of cycling, France. Villefranche-sur-Mer is perfect for a vacation without the bike, but cycling along the French Riviera is one of the most amazing experiences anyone can enjoy.

Nice and Monaco are just 20 km apart, but there are several routes you can take between them to take in as much of the scenery as possible. The coastal routes can be busy with car traffic, as to be expected, but inland you’re unlikely to come across another vehicle on the road.

Jackson Hole to Teton County, Wyoming

Want to see the best that North America has to offer? Riding from Jackson Hole to Teton County will bring you into the heart of Yellowstone National Park. There are plenty of paved pathways for cyclists to enjoy without having to take much of the route by foot.

That means you can take in some of the national park from the comfort of your saddle as you make your way through the mountain range. From Jackson Hole, you can also cycle to Teton Village which takes you alongside Snake River and the white waters, but it’s actually a pretty flat ride.

South Island, New Zealand

Not every biking trip has to be taken along hard ground, and one of the best off-road trips any cycling fan could plan is in New Zealand. The country is already widely regarded as one of the most beautiful but taking it in by bike brings a whole new perspective. In New Zealand, there are no really dangerous wild animals so you can freely cycle around the South Island without any fear of being ambushed.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

If you’re going to go to France, you should probably check out the Netherlands while you’re at it. Amsterdam is famed for the cycling community that lives there, and it’s estimated bicycles outnumber people in the city.

The Dutch landmark has everything you’d expect from a European city, including food, bars, cafes, and plenty of culture. Where Amsterdam differs from the rest is because it is so bike friendly it’s almost harder to get around without one.

Amsterdam

If you love biking it doesn’t really matter where you go, it’s all about spending some quality time on the saddle. You might be looking for a little bit of adventure from biking though, and these places are perfect vacation spots for passionate cyclists.

Little People, Big World’s Tori Roloff Shares First Baby Bump Photo

There it is! Tori Roloff, who is pregnant with her second child with husband Zach Roloff, revealed her growing baby bump on Friday, May 31.

“Baby is starting to make her appearance,” the Little People, Big World star, 28, captioned a mirror selfie that showed her smiling as she cradled her bump while wearing a dark red dress.

The TLC stars, who wed in 2015 and already share a 2-year-old son named Jackson, revealed their baby news exclusively to Us Weekly on May 13.

“We are so excited to announce that Jackson is going to be a big brother!” they told Us exclusively. “We cannot wait to meet our sweet baby girl!”

The couple posed with their son in a photo announcing the happy news, sharing a sonogram pic as Jackson wore a “Big Brother” tee.

Zach, 29, and his wife spoke to Us exclusively in April about their plans to expand their family.

“We have plans,” Zach told Us. “We want a family. I would love four or five kids. I want a little pack. Right now, we’re just kind of [like], if it happens, it happens.”

“It’s just on God’s timing and just whenever,” Tori added. “We’re ready for it.”

The pair also spoke to Us earlier this month about their son, who like his dad is a little person.

“Thank the Lord, Jackson hasn’t really had any significant [health struggles],” Zach told Us last month. “He’s had a couple ear infections, which can be common with dwarfism. There’s a lot of potentials, but for now it’s too early to tell. We actually have the same pediatrician for him that was my pediatrician growing up, so that’s been really nice because he’s familiar with dwarfism and those things. In Portland, [it’s] a little harder to find a pediatrician that has that experience with dwarfism.”

Tori opened up about her son in an emotional post on Sunday, May 26, writing, “I often forget that my son is any different than yours.”

“I forget that he has shorter legs, because he can get around and run just like any other 2 year old,” she continued in the caption that showed Jackson holding his parents’ hands. “I forget he has short arms, because he can still reach everything around the house (even the stuff we don’t want him to). I forget that he’s different because he’s so capable and I see nothing other than my mister mister.”

I often forget that my son is any different than yours. I forget that he has shorter legs, because he can get around and run just like any other 2 year old. I forget he has short arms, because he can still reach everything around the house (even the stuff we don’t want him to). I forget that he’s different because he’s so capable and I see nothing other than my mister mister. Today pointed out that he is different and that’s never going to change. He watched as kids (many younger than him) rode rides at a festival here in town and he wasn’t able to join. Jackson wanted so bad to ride the airplanes that went up and down but the height requirement wouldn’t allow him to (which I totally understand!). It was harder for me than it was for him for sure. It was really the first time I was hit in the face with the fact my child is different. Im so proud of my husband and his outlook on it all and even more proud of my son who brushes things off with ease and I pray they both continue to do this. In the words of @jeremyroloff : if a bad attitude would fix it- I would have one. This was also just a reminder of why I love @disneyland so much: the land of no height requirements! What People Assume About You When You Grew Up Privileged

privileged meaning

Source: JGI/Jamie Grill / Getty

Look, I grew up privileged. Okay? I’m ready for the figurative rocks to be thrown. I do fear that the word “privileged” has become interchangeable with “Snooty,” “Entitled,” or even “As*#ole.” But being snooty, behaving entitled, and being an as*&ole are things people choose to be. Being privileged is not something someone chooses to be. It is something someone just is. Just like one’s sexuality or skin color, someone cannot choose whether or not they’re privileged. And yet, sometimes it feels like society judges privileged individuals as if they did somehow make themselves privileged and as if they think they’re better than others for it. My parents had money, yes. But today, I live in a rent-controlled apartment and shop at thrift stores. My upbringing, of course, influenced who I am, but not in the ways people often assume. Here are things people assume about you, if you grew up privileged.

via GIPHY

You think you’re better than others

I in no way think that I am better at all than those who grew up without the things I had as a kid. I know that there is a lot of different types of knowledge to be learned in this life, and it doesn’t all come from expensive tutors. I even know that my privilege my have unfortunately, unintentionally kept me from some knowledge and wisdom that those who grew up with less than I did do have. How could I think that something I didn’t do or choose makes me better than anyone?

The Investing Habits of Wealthy Black People

Black households earning $ 200,000 or more are among the fastest growing groups in the U.S. This is rarely addressed in discussions about black wealth, as the media and politicos focus so much attention on the bottom of the wealth gap, that they fail to highlight the strides that so many blacks are making. There is no intention to minimize the need for solutions to socioeconomic issues, but we can also learn a lot from the behavior, especially the investing habits of wealthy black people.

A study by Credit Suisse Research and The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University found that the top 5% of African Americans, those with a median net worth of $ 739,000 or more, have a more conservative approach than their white counterparts; owning less in stocks and bonds, and more in CD’s savings bonds, and life insurance. The study also found a higher level of investment in real estate outside of the primary home, 41% of non-financial assets, versus just 22% for whites in the same income bracket.

“This more conservative approach of the top 5% of African Americans to investing is understandable when looking at the constrained social mobility trends of the African American population and lower levels of overall economic security,” study researchers say.

“Owning land is what many of our forefathers experienced as a way to gain wealth. Also, the black community understands homeownership,” says Shelly-Ann Eweka, a certified financial planner with TIAA.

“We should focus on portfolio diversification for wealth building. This is not to say that real estate and entrepreneurship do not produce great wealth for individuals. You want to make sure that you are well-diversified when deciding on how to invest your assets to meet your financial goals,” she adds.

Eweka and others also emphasize the importance of working with a financial planner so that you can determine a productive asset mix that allows you to sleep at night.

Virtual Reality Helps Police In Dealing With Autistic People

(AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)

WASHINGTON (AP) — An autistic man walks out of a store without paying for a toy he picked up. He’s followed by a storekeeper demanding he come back inside. The situation quickly escalates, and police are called.

Officers arrive, their patrol car’s lights flashing and sirens blaring, to find the man in the parking lot, yelling and not responding to their commands. They have a choice: confront the man and risk having the situation turn violent or regroup to figure out a different approach.

The scenario is part of a virtual reality simulation for police that’s being developed by Axon — the company known best for developing the Taser — so officers can learn how to interact with people who have autism and de-escalate situations that could quickly turn awry. The developmental disorder that can involve varying degrees of language and social impairments, often including repetitive behaviors. In 2018, the U.S. government estimated about 1 in 40 kids is diagnosed with autism.

RELATED: Lawyer: Cop Who Killed Texas Woman Knew She Was Mentally Ill

This week, the company announced a partnership with Chicago police to train officers by using virtual reality headsets. It will be making the program, developed with the help of mental health and autism experts, available to police departments across the U.S.

For now, they offer two training modules: one for autism and another for dealing with people who have schizophrenia.

“The ability to tell the difference between someone who’s acting in an unusual way that may be due to their autism versus someone who could be a risk to you can be a really fine line,” said David Kearon of the advocacy group Autism Speaks. “When you’re trying to make that judgment very quickly, that’s where we see mistakes made.”

The officers don headsets similar to those used for video games and are immediately immersed in a virtual reality training ground. With a small remote, they can pick the scenario and go through each training scenario in just about five minutes.

In the autism scenario, officers experience it first from the point-of-view of the autistic person, watching as the storekeeper approaches somewhat angrily and pulls the toy robot away, telling the man he needs to pay for it. Police are called and officers arrive and confront him.

They can then play it from the perspective of the police officers, observing tell-tale signs that someone could be autistic.

A crackling call on the radio reports an aggressive male suspect shoplifting and fighting with an employee. The officers pull up to find the man in the parking lot, holding the toy and flailing his arms. They introduce themselves and ask the man what’s happening. He doesn’t respond.

“We need you to calm down!” an officer tells the man, who is hitting himself in the head and speaking incoherently.

The officers can then choose to either talk to their partner or close in and confront the man.

Alabama’s ban of the Arthur gay wedding episode shows how many people still see queerness as perversion

Alabama’s ban of the Arthur gay wedding episode shows how many people still see queerness as perversion

Alabama’s ban of the Arthur gay wedding episode shows how many people still see queerness as perversion

Author Michael Arceneaux discusses Alabama Public Television’s decision to ban an episode of children’s program Arthur in which a gay wedding takes place.

A month ago, after speaking at a panel during the National Antiracist Festival at American University, an elementary school teacher approached me and asked if I could recommend any LGBTQ children’s books featuring characters of color. She spoke of her struggles to not only implement LGBTQ-related material into her classwork, but to then find material that didn’t feature only white characters. I told her that, unfortunately, no books came to mind as such material remains difficult to find even for adults, but then I circled back to how challenging it must have been to get approval to discuss queerness and transness with children.

After she provided a few more specifics, my response was blunt. “See, they still look at it as perversion.”

Both of us recently recalled that exchange in light of reports that Alabama Public Television refused to air an episode of the children’s series Arthur because it featured a gay wedding. In the episode, which aired nationwide on May 13th, Arthur and his friends attend their teacher Mr. Ratburn’s ceremony to his partner. While others merely either shrugged their shoulders or told their timelines, “I knew that teacher was gay,” Mike McKenzie, the director of programming at APT, opted to throw a fit.

In an email to AL.com, McKenzie argued: “Parents have trusted Alabama Public Television for more than 50 years to provide children’s programs that entertain, educate and inspire. More importantly—although we strongly encourage parents to watch television with their children and talk about what they have learned afterwards—parents trust that their children can watch APT without their supervision. We also know that children who are younger than the ‘target’ audience for Arthur also watch the program.”

It appears that show creator WGBH and broadcaster PBS alerted local stations in April about the episode, titled “Mr. Ratburn and the Special Someone.” My trouble with them alerting them of the episode in advance is that it gives the indication that there is something wrong with two consenting adults who love each other deciding to have a ceremony for what is effectively a contract that is perfectly legal, given it is recognized by the state.

Some would say, “Think of the children!” I would say in response, “Kudos to you for confirming you are a bigoted fool.”

WGBH and PBS should not have opened the door for Mike McKenzie to present his prejudices as an act of virtue, as though it is some great consideration of the precious minds of children. If the station felt the episode was inappropriate, they wouldn’t have made it—much less opted to air it. If Arthur and the crew were tipping to a wedding featuring two people of opposite genders, McKenzie would not have batted an eye.

McKenzie’s position is a testament to anti-queer biases and the ignorance that informs them. To wit, in 2005, this same station pulled an episode of Arthur that featured a bunny character named Bunny who had two mothers. Considering most of the gay parents in this country are in the South and predominately lesbian, the episode spoke to an obvious reality for many—especially those living ‘round their way.

However, Alabama Public Television’s executive then-director Allan Pizzato told AL.com at the time, “Our feeling is that we basically have a trust with parents about our programming. This program doesn’t fit into that.”

Consider all of the romance and innuendo children see in animated works. Then think about the violence, which you would think is far worse than two men getting married and a bunny rabbit having two mommies. Not so to self-righteous homophobes who don’t clutch their Bibles so much as they do the patriarchy.

What Alabama Public Television said then and is saying now is that there is only one way to be, and if a character differs from that, they do not make for appropriate viewing. Moreover, when it comes to homosexuality in particular, APT has reminded us that, no matter how mildly you present it, some folks’ minds will rush to sexual acts.

This is honestly no different than some former Indiana lawmaker and homophobic preacher recently arguing that Pete Buttigieg must denounce fisting and rimming in order to become the next president of the United States. Yes, seriously. In a blog entitled “Pete, Since You Brought It Up, How ‘Gay’ Are You?” Don Boys basically says Buttigieg needs to promise the country he doesn’t have AIDS, and that yes, he is gay, but not, like, really into the butt stuff.

“I don’t hate Pete or his lover or any other homosexual, but I will not give them a pass when they or others suggest that ‘gayness’ is not perversion, that it is normal, maybe even admirable,” Boys writes.

Boys sounds like an utter idiot, but he speaks to the mindset held by the same men who have banned two Arthur episodes with any queer characters. To these people, we are incapable of romance or subtlety; we solely exist through sexual acts which, by the way, are really, really icky, unnatural, ungodly, and not appropriate for anyone—much less for God’s precious children who already watch women get depicted as conquests in far too many fairy tales.

Those people literally thought Arthur’s gay teacher and that guest character’s mamas were going to stage a Godless gay orgy on PBS just to soil the minds of their kids. It’s easy to mock and rightfully stokes anger, but it’s also quite depressing. It is a reminder that, for a lot of us, our basic existence is inappropriate. No matter how we present ourselves as “just like the straight people”—even in a kiddie-crafted tone—their minds will take us to the gutter.

In their minds, we are perverts. When they see us, they hope their children don’t view us as anything other than wrong. Because they don’t want their children to become us. And we are going to spend all of our lives trying to prove otherwise—sometimes to no avail.

People Are Convinced This 2011 Game of Thrones Poster Revealed Who Was Destined to Win the Throne

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8.

In the end, it wasn’t Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen who won the throne in Game of Thrones‘ series finale, but come-from-behind underdog Bran Stark.

Of course, King Bran will never sit on the actual Iron Throne, as it was destroyed by Drogon after the dragon discovered that Jon had murdered Daenerys. But that hasn’t stopped fans from pointing out a clue from a poster for Thrones‘ very first season that may have hinted at who would ultimately reign over the Seven Kingdoms — or rather, six now that the North has seceded under Sansa’s rule.

Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark in the series finale of Game of Thrones.

Leading up to the Game of Thrones series premiere on April 17, 2011, HBO released a promotional poster featuring Ned Stark sitting on the Iron Throne holding House Stark’s ancestral Valyrian steel sword Ice. But the detail that has captured many fans’ attention since Sunday’s finale is the raven perched on the throne next to Ned.

Since Bran ended up filling the roles of both king and Three-Eyed Raven, some viewers are speculating that this poster was the key to the show’s endgame all along. “Anyone else just notice the raven on Ned’s right from the season one poster???” wrote one Twitter user. “Raven + Ned Stark on the Iron Throne = Bran Stark. It was in front of us THE WHOLE TIME.”

This theory also squares with the poster’s slogan of, “You win or you die.” While Ned Stark was the first major character to die playing the game of thrones, Bran was ultimately the one to win.

Looks like the Three-Eyed Raven may have really known all.

Best beaches for people who love to surf

Ever since people began standing on boards in the ocean, surfing has grown into one of the biggest adventure sports in the world. The best thing about it is all you need is a board and beach! Not everywhere in the world with a beach is great for surfing, but these are the best.

Pantin, Spain

This beach is one of the most famous for people who surf outside of Asia and the Americas. It has held the Pantin Classic Pro since 1988, and its rocky bottom increases the difficulty. The beach is a spot for experienced surfers, but one that must make it onto your bucket list if you love your thrills to go along with your surfing spills.

Pantin, Spain

Bingin Beach, Bali

It’s not all about the surfing when you go to an exotic location, and some of your time will be spent relaxing. Bingin Beach in Bali is a great place to both surf and relax as it’s a nice quiet beach with plenty of breaking waves. You’ll be surfing right over the reef, so when the tide is high make sure to look down below for some stunning views.

Newcastle, Australia

The Gold Coast is perhaps one of the most famous surfing hotspots in Australia, but head to Newcastle if you’d like great waves with less of the crowds. There are several beaches along the coastline in Newcastle, and each one comes with its own set of unique conditions.

If you want an all-year-round challenge, then Newcastle is really the place for you. There’s the added bonus of cheap accommodation that typically won’t set you back much more than $ 25 per night. Once you’re done in the water, there’s plenty to see in this historic Australian city to add to the memories.

Pipa, Brazil

Want to head somewhere that has world-class waves but none of the backpackers getting in the way? Pipa in Northern Brazil is perfect for keen surfers who just want to spend time with their board and the water.

You won’t have to worry about battling for waves here, and the great thing is once you’re done surfing the chilled out town is just 10 minutes by foot away. Beginners and experts will have fun here and if you keep your eyes peeled you just might spot a dolphin or two looking to join you.

Pipa, Brazil

Weligama, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has become a hotspot for surfers in recent years. It’s easy to see why when you get there as the cost is cheap and the waves are ideal for just about everyone. Beginners can have great fun closer to the beach, while out to sea there are some monster waves for experts. If you’re looking to brush up on your skills, you can take on the smaller waves yourself, or get some tips from one of the 500 surfing schools along the beach.

If you’ve been looking for a new surfing spot, then check out these places dotted all over the world. They offer something for everyone, and you won’t be disappointed by the surrounding areas once you get there.

Coachella Security Guards Allege Inhumane Treatment: ‘People Over Here Are Starving’

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty

Every year, music lovers and miscellaneous basics flood Indio, California, for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Coachella is known for its huge headlining artists and general aura of douchebaggery—the stereotypical festivalgoer is a rich kid sporting a headdress and a fanny pack, scouring the desert for good times and even better Instagram opportunities.

Of course, these highly-mocked caricatures only make up part of the story. The festival is also populated with an army of staffers who aren’t in Indio to party. This contingent includes security guards who work long days in high heat confiscating contraband, protecting talent, and generally attempting to ensure that everyone survives the weekend. It’s an important job, and an appealing one for fans and entertainment world-adjacent security professionals.

Antonio Cannady, a screenwriter based in Los Angeles, told The Daily Beast that he heard about a company based in Long Beach that was hiring security for Coachella. “So I went down there and applied and then we had this little quick orientation. It wasn’t much of an interview, it was like a cattle call, ‘cause we go inside this room and everybody’s standing up. It’s hot, we’re all sweating. But they talked it up like it’s Coachella, this big music festival. And they were like, yeah, it’s going to be like camping, so bring a tent and a sleeping bag or whatever.”

At least that seems to be the case now that yet another fireball has appeared in the skies over Siberia, catching the eyes of countless citizens and giving everyone just the tiniest bit of a scare.

The object, which exploded over the town of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia, didn’t cause any damage and there have been no injuries associated with it visiting Earth in a blaze of glory. Pretty Much Everyone Who’s Ever Been on Game of Thrones Reunited to Get People Choked Up

Cast members from every season of Game of Thrones gathered at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Wednesday night to celebrate the official premiere of the beloved show’s eighth and final season.

While the show won’t be available to fans until it debuts on HBO on April 14, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Sansa and Arya Stark all walked the red carpet as their human counterparts alongside many characters who were deceased, such as Sean Bean’s Eddard Stark and Jason Momoa’s Khal Drogo.

Ahead of the screening of the first episode which included a special cautionary warning from Sansa and Arya Stark about the consequences of not following the rules of the event, series creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss introduced the full cast of Game of Thrones, welcoming not only the stars of season 8, but many of the deceased characters who had departed the show.

Watching the final premiere of a show that’s been such an integral part of pop culture was undeniably emotional, something that Emilia Clarke, who plays the inimitable Daenerys, summed up nicely to The Hollywood Reporter.

“This is bonkers. I feel great, and weird, and strange.”

Countries with the nicest people

If you are a well-traveled person, you may know that some countries are certainly more welcoming than others. When your plane touches down thousands of miles from home, it’s always nice to be greeted with a friendly smile and a warm embrace. On the other hand it’s never comforting for the welcome to feel slightly frosty and unwanted – ignored, stared at, and just overall uninviting.

Every country around the globe has their own little sense of humanity – rules, norms, traditions – and it makes you wonder, which of the world’s countries are said to have the most welcoming and friendliest people? Judging from a survey done by global expat network InterNations, we’ve created a list detailing some of the countries that polled in as having the friendliest attitudes towards ‘out of towners.’ FYI, USA ranked 36th out of 180…

Countries with the nicest people

Spain

Spain is one of the most popular European tourist destinations, attracting people for its relaxed beach vibes and glorious tapas food. It’s said that the friendly attitude comes from the country’s chilled casual vibes and leisurely lifestyle – siesta anyone?.

Selma Blair’s Makeup Tutorial for People With MS Is Heartwarming and Hilarious

Selma Blair continues to act as a pillar of inspiration, staying positive and strong while struggling with multiple sclerosis. She proved this once again through a hilarious and heartwarming makeup tutorial that garnered tons of A-list fans.

On Sunday, March 31, the 46-year-old actress posted a series of Instagram videos acknowledging how difficult it can be to do her own makeup. “So my fine motor skills aren’t, like, fine at this moment,” she starts the video off saying. “So I just want to say I’m going to probably give a makeup tutorial never. But if I do then you know I’m really just trying to have fun.”

She continued to do just that, posting a video to her feed showing how she blends her makeup so friends aren’t rubbing her face. “MS people. Brush. Big bronzer,” she says before rubbing the bristles all over her face as she giggles at her own joke. “There done.”

Fans quickly praised her for her lighthearted and touching candidness — including Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner, Tracee Ellis Ross and more stars.

“What a ROCKSTAR you are,” Jenner commented. “I adore you….sending you tons of love today my girl.” While the Blackish star wrote, “@selmablair you are a dream.”

Will and Grace star Debra Messing applauded her as well, writing, “Love you @selmablair and your application. You’re awesome.” And Down to You costar Freddie Prinze Jr. sweetly commented, “that’s pro.”

“You are so beautiful you don’t need makeup,” said Brooke Shields. “But I agree with a big brush always. Love you.”

Celebrity makeup artist Jo Baker even gave her stamp of approval, “Pretty brilliant application bird.”

The Cruel Intentions star received her diagnosis back in August 2018 and shared the devastating news via an Instagram post in October. “I am in an exacerbation,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it. And I laugh and I don’t know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best. … I am in the thick of it but I hope to give some hope to others. And even to myself. You can’t get help unless you ask.”

And even though it may not be the most serviceable makeup tutorial, it did make Us (and apparently many others) smile on this Monday morning.
