Coachella Security Guards Allege Inhumane Treatment: ‘People Over Here Are Starving’

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty

Every year, music lovers and miscellaneous basics flood Indio, California, for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Coachella is known for its huge headlining artists and general aura of douchebaggery—the stereotypical festivalgoer is a rich kid sporting a headdress and a fanny pack, scouring the desert for good times and even better Instagram opportunities.

Of course, these highly-mocked caricatures only make up part of the story. The festival is also populated with an army of staffers who aren’t in Indio to party. This contingent includes security guards who work long days in high heat confiscating contraband, protecting talent, and generally attempting to ensure that everyone survives the weekend. It’s an important job, and an appealing one for fans and entertainment world-adjacent security professionals.

Antonio Cannady, a screenwriter based in Los Angeles, told The Daily Beast that he heard about a company based in Long Beach that was hiring security for Coachella. “So I went down there and applied and then we had this little quick orientation. It wasn’t much of an interview, it was like a cattle call, ‘cause we go inside this room and everybody’s standing up. It’s hot, we’re all sweating. But they talked it up like it’s Coachella, this big music festival. And they were like, yeah, it’s going to be like camping, so bring a tent and a sleeping bag or whatever.”

Another fireball exploded over Russia, and plenty of people caught it on video

russia meteor

If you want to see space rocks exploding in Earth’s atmosphere apparently you’d be best served by moving to Russia. At least that seems to be the case now that yet another fireball has appeared in the skies over Siberia, catching the eyes of countless citizens and giving everyone just the tiniest bit of a scare.

The object, which exploded over the town of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia, didn’t cause any damage and there have been no injuries associated with it visiting Earth in a blaze of glory. What it did do, however, is provide a reason for lots of people to look skyward, and thankfully several of them had cameras rolling.

Pretty Much Everyone Who’s Ever Been on Game of Thrones Reunited to Get People Choked Up

Cast members from every season of Game of Thrones gathered at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Wednesday night to celebrate the official premiere of the beloved show’s eighth and final season.

While the show won’t be available to fans until it debuts on HBO on April 14, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Sansa and Arya Stark all walked the red carpet as their human counterparts alongside many characters who were deceased, such as Sean Bean’s Eddard Stark and Jason Momoa’s Khal Drogo.

Ahead of the screening of the first episode which included a special cautionary warning from Sansa and Arya Stark about the consequences of not following the rules of the event, series creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss introduced the full cast of Game of Thrones, welcoming not only the stars of season 8, but many of the deceased characters who had departed the show.

Watching the final premiere of a show that’s been such an integral part of pop culture was undeniably emotional, something that Emilia Clarke, who plays the inimitable Daenerys, summed up nicely to The Hollywood Reporter.

“This is bonkers. I feel great, and weird, and strange.”

Countries with the nicest people

If you are a well-traveled person, you may know that some countries are certainly more welcoming than others. When your plane touches down thousands of miles from home, it’s always nice to be greeted with a friendly smile and a warm embrace. On the other hand it’s never comforting for the welcome to feel slightly frosty and unwanted – ignored, stared at, and just overall uninviting.

Every country around the globe has their own little sense of humanity – rules, norms, traditions – and it makes you wonder, which of the world’s countries are said to have the most welcoming and friendliest people? Judging from a survey done by global expat network InterNations, we’ve created a list detailing some of the countries that polled in as having the friendliest attitudes towards ‘out of towners.’ FYI, USA ranked 36th out of 180…

However, it does attract people for its fascinating culture of delightful spiritual temples and the lively central capital hub Taipei. It’s said that the Taiwanese are particularly friendly to visitors as they are proud of their independence from China. They offer an open and warm welcome to foreigners.

Selma Blair’s Makeup Tutorial for People With MS Is Heartwarming and Hilarious

Selma Blair continues to act as a pillar of inspiration, staying positive and strong while struggling with multiple sclerosis. She proved this once again through a hilarious and heartwarming makeup tutorial that garnered tons of A-list fans.

On Sunday, March 31, the 46-year-old actress posted a series of Instagram videos acknowledging how difficult it can be to do her own makeup. “So my fine motor skills aren’t, like, fine at this moment,” she starts the video off saying. “So I just want to say I’m going to probably give a makeup tutorial never. But if I do then you know I’m really just trying to have fun.”

She continued to do just that, posting a video to her feed showing how she blends her makeup so friends aren’t rubbing her face. “MS people. Brush. Big bronzer,” she says before rubbing the bristles all over her face as she giggles at her own joke. “There done.”

Fans quickly praised her for her lighthearted and touching candidness — including Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner, Tracee Ellis Ross and more stars.

“What a ROCKSTAR you are,” Jenner commented. “I adore you….sending you tons of love today my girl.” While the Blackish star wrote, “@selmablair you are a dream.”

Will and Grace star Debra Messing applauded her as well, writing, “Love you @selmablair and your application. You’re awesome.” And Down to You costar Freddie Prinze Jr. sweetly commented, “that’s pro.”

“You are so beautiful you don’t need makeup,” said Brooke Shields. “But I agree with a big brush always. Love you.”

Celebrity makeup artist Jo Baker even gave her stamp of approval, “Pretty brilliant application bird.”

The Cruel Intentions star received her diagnosis back in August 2018 and shared the devastating news via an Instagram post in October. “I am in an exacerbation,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it. And I laugh and I don’t know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best. … I am in the thick of it but I hope to give some hope to others. And even to myself. You can’t get help unless you ask.”

And even though it may not be the most serviceable makeup tutorial, it did make Us (and apparently many others) smile on this Monday morning.

WTF?? ‘The Walking Dead’ Just Killed Off 10 People!

If you’re a fan of the Walking Dead comics, you knew this moment was coming. If you weren’t, we know just how you feel. (I, for one, was not prepared.)

The penultimate episode of the show’s ninth season was a jawdropper, ratcheting the horror sky high in advance of next week’s finale on Sunday, March 31. Here’s everything that happened on “The Calm Before” show:

As the episode opens, we see a group of happy Hilltoppers heading for the big fair — only to be slaughtered (and, in one case, scalped) by Alpha (Samantha Morton) before they ever get there. But for the next hour or so, it’s easy to forget the hovering threat of the Whisperers. The fair is a huge success, as the fractured communities come together, healing old wounds, forging new ties. Michonne (Danai Gurira) is welcomed back to the fold, as the community leaders convene to discuss future alliances and come away inspired: they will unite to battle the Whisperers, and beyond! From now on, they agree, the communities will be allies, and an attack against one will be treated as an attack against all.

Meanwhile, Rosita (Christian Serratos) and Eugene (Josh McDermitt) smooth things over. Henry (Matt Lintz) plans to take Lydia (Cassady McClincy) on a movie date — much to the delight of Carol (Melissa McBride) and Ezekiel (Khary Payton). Tara (Alanna Masterson) steps fully into her leadership at the Hilltop. And Enid (Katelyn Nacon) and Alden (Callan McAuliffe) stroll happily through the fair, young and in love and snacking on candied apples on sticks! Which are, uh, in no way a ghastly foreshadowing of this episode’s horrifying climax. Nope.

Matt Lintz as Henry on The Walking Dead

…Okay, we lied.

Because as the celebration carries on, an uninvited guest strolls through the crowd: Alpha, wearing the stolen dress, hat, and blonde-haired scalp (ewwww!) of her earlier prey. And while we don’t know what she’s up to, we do know she’s finished with whatever it is by the time a tracker party, led by Daryl (Norman Reedus) and including Michonne, Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), and Carol, heads out to locate the Whisperers’ camp. As night falls, the group is set upon by walkers — and when the zombie are dead, the Whisperers emerge. They’re surrounded.

But instead of killing them, Alpha captures the group and holds them until morning. And at first light, she brings Daryl to an overlook. A massive horde of walkers is milling below, her Whisperers among them. But she and her people won’t bother the allied communities, she says, as long as the bounds of her territory are respected — territory she’s marked with a border just north of here.

“You’ll see it as you leave.”

Daryl finds his friends waiting for him in the woods. Then, they find Siddiq (Avi Nash) — tied to a tree, covered in blood. He points. And just as promised, they see it: a border, clearly marked, by ten tall pikes … with ten heads mounted on top. And they all belong to people we knew.

We recognize the Highwaymen first. Dead. Then the camera begins to cut back and forth between the field and the fair, as people begin to realize that their friends are missing.

Their undead eyes are open. Their undead mouths are moving. Frankie. Rodney. Nadia. Tammy Rose.

Enid is next.

Then Tara.

And then, finally—

“No, no!” Daryl screams, running to come between Carol and the last pike, the last head. “Just look at me,” he says. But it’s too late.

She’s already seen.

It’s Henry.

This horrifying moment seems to go on forever, but eventually, we cut — to the memorial several days later, as Siddiq eulogizes the dead. Alpha left him alive to tell this story in the hopes that it would destroy them, he says. But the story he wants to tell is a different one: about how their lost friends fought for each other, down to the last, and died as heroes. That’s what he wants people to remember. And that’s where it ends… for now.

Next week: “The Storm.”

The Walking Dead airs on AMC Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.

Hailey Bieber: People want to see me fail

OHMYGOSSIP — Hailey Bieber is sick of critics who want to see her “fail”.
The 22-year-old model – who was previously known as Hailey Baldwin – faces constant hate comments on social media from people who want to see her marriage to Justin Bieber collapse, and she has now said she doesn’t understand why anyone would wish for failure of another couple’s romance.
She said: “They just really want to see you fail, for whatever reason. I don’t know if it’s because they want to be able to say, ‘I told you so’ or because they want to be right, I don’t really know what the idea is behind trying to tear somebody’s relationship down, or person down, whatever it may be.”
And although she tries to remain optimistic, the blonde beauty can’t help but blame the “evil world” around her.
She added: “I guess it’s just kind of an evil world, at the core of it, and humanity is just struggling.”
Hailey even struggles with nasty comments from fans of her husband Justin, 25, who have become “possessive” over the ‘Sorry’ hitmaker.
She said: “The problem too is kids become possessive over people and feel like if they think they’re hurt, they feel hurt for them and they’re hurt too, or whatever it is. They just think they know these people who are famous because their life is so exposed.
“What’s really weird to me is they create scenarios in their head of what they think is happening or what they think should happen, and I’m just like, ‘This is just so dumb. It’s so dumb.’”
The beauty now ignores social media comments as much as she can, but says she “still cares to a certain extent”.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan magazine, she said: “I’ve found that I got to a place where I don’t read the comments. People can just be mean, and I feel like if you don’t want it to get to you, then don’t read it and allow it to affect your soul.
“You still care to a certain extent. You really have to train your brain to be like, ‘Okay, why do I even care? I don’t know these people, they don’t know me, they’re not a part of my life or my relationship.’”

Countries with the funniest people

Some people are just funnier than others, there’s no denying it, but are people from certain countries typically funnier than others? We’re looking at hilarious people all over the world and deciding once and for all which countries have the funniest people.

UK

Have you ever heard of dry British humor? You’ll never guess where it comes from! Whenever the world gets British people down instead of crying about it, they find humor in the darkest of situations. It’s what makes the country keep going and there isn’t a single thing that British people won’t turn into a joke. Sure the subject matter might be terrible, but the British mentality is essentially; “If we can’t laugh we’ll cry,” and they choose laughter every time.

USA

The US has its own brand of humor that has become popular all over the world. The sitcom has become a staple of American entertainment, and there are a lot of them. That means there are tons of funny people out there coming up with these great ideas for hit shows. Add to that the amount of stand up comedians on tour each night in America, and you know you’re going to be laughing before you go to sleep. While sometimes American humor might lack subtlety, it isn’t afraid to make a joke that needs to be said.

Australia

Australians are hilarious. We could just leave it there, but we thought we’d explain why they are so funny. Australia is a country where literally everything is capable of giving you a fatal bite, sting, or wallop. The environment is so dangerous in Australia, but they are the most laid back people in the world, and that brings great humor.

Australians aren’t afraid to make a joke in bleak times like the British, but will happily hit you with an American style prank to get you laughing too. It’s this combination of English and American humor that make Australians some of the funniest people in the world.

Canada

Some of the funniest actors in the world come from Canada. Comedians such as Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, and John Candy all hail from Canada and they are definitely some of the funniest people to have ever lived. Throw in a healthy dose of sarcasm on top of those great actors and try to convince us Canadians aren’t hilarious.

Ireland

If you want a good laugh, then make sure you get yourself to Ireland. While most countries have comedians to make them laugh, Ireland doesn’t need them as everyone is hilarious. Sure there have been some funny comedians, writers, actors, and entertainers from the Emerald Isle, but trust us, there are a million others just like them. Ireland is where you go if you want a good time and you can’t leave this country without cracking a smile at least once.

People all over the world are funny, but we think these countries have the funniest people. The most hilarious humor around the world is born from these nations, and while other countries deserve mention, these are the greatest.

Are There People Who Are Really Allergic To The Cold? The Answer Is Yes

Several weeks ago, our Friday Funny Chair comedian Damon Williams shared that his wife is allergic to cold temperatures — like, literally breaks out in hives.

Even though it’s late March, we wanted to talk about cold urticaria (ur-tih-kar-e-uh) because it doesn’t only happen during cold winter months. It is a rare disease and many people only become aware of it when someone they know gets affected by it.

WHAT IS COLD URTICARIA?

Cold urticaria is an allergic reaction to cold temperatures. Also known as cold hives, the condition causes redness, itching and swelling after exposure to the cold.

There is something called primary acquired cold urticaria, and another category of individuals who have secondary acquired cold urticaria. Patients with secondary acquired cold urticaria may be related to an underlying condition, like an infection. It affects patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly. In some cases it can occur spontaneously, and in some cases it can go away in a few years.

You can live your whole life in a cold weather climate and it can be triggered by a change in your immune system after recently having a fever or being sick.

 WHAT CAN TRIGGER IT?

Cold urticaria is caused by exposure to cold, causing welts to develop after being exposed to cold, cold water, and cold objects. Pretty much any contact with cold; a cold drink, a cold swimming pool, exposure to cold outdoor temperatures.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS?

Cold urticaria (ur-tih-KAR-e-uh) is a skin reaction to cold that appears within minutes after cold exposure. Affected skin develops reddish, itchy welts (hives). People with cold urticaria experience widely different symptoms. Some have minor reactions to the cold, while others have severe reactions. For some people with this condition, swimming in cold water could lead to very low blood pressure, fainting or shock.

Cold urticaria signs and symptoms may include:

  • Temporary reddish, itchy welts (hives) on the area of skin that was exposed to cold
  • A worsening of the reaction as the skin warms
  • Swelling of hands while holding cold objects
  • Swelling of lips from consuming cold food or drink

Severe reactions may include:

  • A whole-body response (anaphylaxis), which can cause fainting, a racing heart, swelling of limbs or torso, and shock
  • Swelling of the tongue and throat, which can make it difficult to breathe

ARE THERE ANY SEVERE CONCERNS TO BE AWARE OF?

Cold urticaria symptoms begin soon after the skin is exposed to a sudden drop in air temperature or to cold water. Damp and windy conditions may make a flare of symptoms more likely. Each episode may persist for about two hours. The worst reactions generally occur with full skin exposure, such as swimming in cold water. Such a reaction could lead to loss of consciousness and drowning.

WHO IS THE MOST SUSCEPTIBLE?

Cold urticaria occurs most frequently in young adults. If you think you have this condition, consult your doctor. Treatment usually includes preventive steps such as taking antihistamines and avoiding cold air and water.

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A DOCTOR?

If you have skin reactions after cold exposure, see your doctor. Even if the reactions are mild, your doctor will want to rule out underlying conditions that may be causing the problem. Seek emergency care if after sudden exposure to cold you experience a whole-body response (anaphylaxis) or difficulty breathing. The hives aren’t like normal hives, the welts can be really painful and actually burn, almost like a really bad sunburn will start to burn. The reactions can last from an hour last up to a day

This is where the world’s richest people vacation

There’s nothing better than packing your bags and going on vacation. This is a time for you to relax, unwind, and see a new part of the world that you haven’t seen before. Of course, going on vacation isn’t cheap. You need to pay for flights, you need to pay for your accommodation, and you need to pay for all of the added extras. Because of this, many people choose to fly closer to home to save themselves money. However, rich people don’t need to save any money. They have more than enough to go on exclusive and exotic vacations, and this is where they go…

They lounge on a private island

It’s always awkward when you want to totally sit back and relax, but there are other people around you. You have to share the pool, you have to race for sun loungers, and you have to deal with their sticky bodies sitting right next to you. Well, rich people are able to cut out this little niggle. They can lounge on private islands across the globe, but one of their favorites is Coco Prive. This private island will set you back around $ 35,000 a night, but it’s definitely worth it.

They diamond dive and keep the treasure

Rich people are almost always looking for ways to expand their wealth, and a Diamond Safari is one of the most fun ways to do that. This underwater safari takes place in South Africa over the course of 11 days and offers guests the chance to dive beneath the surface in search of priceless diamonds and jewels. They are allowed to keep anything they can find and will provide expert service along the way. They can get their jewels estimated, they can keep the raw jewels for themselves, or they can turn it into jewelry of some kind. The underwater world is their oyster – and the pearl is always inside.

They apres-ski in their own ski chalet

If you’ve ever been skiing, you’ll know that the ultimate dream is to stay in your very own ski chalet up in the mountains. Most people can’t afford that, but rich people can. In fact, they are able to rent out beautiful ski chalets that are more than what people earn every single year. People still fear self-driving cars a year after Uber fatal crash

TwitterFacebook

Elaine Herzberg was walking her bicycle across a Tempe, Arizona street when a Volvo XC90 hit her, almost a year ago on March 18, 2018. She died at the hospital.

The car that hit her was an Uber, but this one was self-driving. The driver and sole occupant in the car was a “safety operator” sitting behind the wheel, not controlling the vehicle.

The fatal crash had immediate ramifications for Uber’s self-driving car program and the industry. Only recently did Uber restart its testing (and only in Pittsburgh). Now 12 months later, we’re seeing that the public perception of autonomous vehicles (AVs) is still heavily affected by that deadly crash.  Read more…

Blame It On The Alcohol: How Drinking Ads Impact Young People

Binge drinking and booze – this is the stuff those poisonous hip-hop videos are made up of. These and so many alcohol advertisements Black youth are exposed to have a pervasive effect on them. A recent report compiled by the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has shed some new light on the subject.

An excerpt of the report reads that youth from the African-American community are known to receive substantial pressure from alcohol advertisement in magazines and other forms of media. This is due to two reasons: brands that are targeting the youth have more capital for advertisement as opposed to other companies and they have higher control over media.

While this report went ahead to prove their hypothesis, there are also studies out there that signify that the Caucasian counterparts of the Black society are more likely to be affected by alcohol adverts. These studies have cited reasons such as religion, social norms, and poverty.

The African-American culture has a more conservative view when it comes to drinking and this level of conservativeness is missing from other cultures in the United States. Even an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh was quoted in this research supporting this societal perception of the Black community. She said that Black children generally have a stronger feeling of retention because their parents mostly disapprove of drinking as opposed to European and American parents.

Insiders from the alcohol Industry have completely refuted the claims in both the above mentioned reports. Frank Coleman, who is the Senior Vice President of the United States Distilled Spirits Council, simply told NBC that the spirits, wine, and beer industry is completely against underage drinking and spends millions every year to fight it.

It has been found by researchers and psychologists that when the individuals from the Black community do drink, there are some repetitive consequences. These include problems in relationships, legal problems, financial problems, and even unemployment. All these problems are seen in the white community as well, but in lesser numbers as opposed to African-Americans.

That being said, we would like the adults to practice responsible drinking habits while keeping an eye out for young drinkers.

People track when talkers say ‘uh’ to predict what comes next

Speakers tend to say ‘uh’ before uncommon words (‘uh… automobile’) rather than common words (‘car’). In a new eye-tracking study, researchers show that listeners use this information to predict an uncommon word upon hearing ‘uh.’ Moreover, when an ‘atypical’ speaker says ‘uh’ before common words (‘uh… car’), listeners learn to predict common words after ‘uh’ — but only with a native speaker.

These 5 People Added up to 284 Points to Their Credit Scores by Making the Same Move

Everyone who’s saddled with bad credit has a unique story.

A man burdened with $ 6,000 in unpaid bills. A couple recovering from job loss and foreclosure. A woman who fell behind on payments while living abroad. A single mom with a terminally ill child. A young woman with so much debt she couldn’t even get a credit card.

One of the toughest parts about paying down debt and fixing your credit score is knowing where to begin.

To create a rebuilding plan, first you have to know what you’re dealing with.

Your credit report will give you this information. You can get a free copy of it once every 12 months from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus — but they can be tough to decipher.

If you want to keep a closer eye on your credit, get your credit score and “credit report card” for free from Credit Sesame. This website breaks down exactly what’s on your credit report in layman’s terms, how it affects your score and what you should do about it.

Folks who’ve used it tell us it’s a lifesaver.

5 People Who Raised Their Credit Scores Using Credit Sesame

We spoke with five different people who’ve had profound problems with their credit. All five turned things around with Credit Sesame.

James Cooper: +277 Points

James Cooper knows all about having bad credit. As recently as 2017, his credit score was a lousy 524.

“I never had a credit card,” he says. “I had $ 6,000 worth of unpaid bills.”

He vowed to sort out his financial situation and fix his credit.

Although there are legitimate credit repair services, there are also shady ones that demand money upfront and promise way more than they can deliver. Then they’ll milk you for money until you wise up.

Cooper and a friend went through this ordeal with three companies. Then they found Credit Sesame, and the free credit monitoring service taught them how to fix their credit.

Cooper raised his score by 277 points — from 524 to 801 — over the six months from June to November 2017.

Inspired by his experience, now Cooper teaches high school students the importance of good credit.

Jerry Morgan: +120 Points

In 2008, the housing bubble burst. The three-bedroom home in New Port Richey, Florida, where Jerry Morgan and his wife, Vivienne, had lived for 10 years plunged into the foreclosure process.

Then Vivienne lost her job.

By 2017, the family’s financial situation started to look up again. So in September, Morgan decided to address his credit score.

“Frankly, with the experiences we have gone through, I was embarrassed to even check my score,” he said.

Before coming across Credit Sesame, Morgan hadn’t bothered to check his credit score in, well, quite a while. He says finally getting his finances on stable ground encouraged him to take a peek at this three-digit number.

Following recommendations from the service, he’s raised his score 120 points in six months.

Elisabeth Nyang: +168 Points

At the end of 2016, Elisabeth Nyang was in debt to the tune of $ 17,500 — a mix of credit card debt, overdue bills and lingering student loans. She found herself there after two years of living in China.

In China, where it’s difficult to send money to the U.S., Nyang fell behind on her payments. In hindsight, she admits, the difficulty in transferring money was just an excuse — out of sight, out of mind.

But when she decided to move back to the States, she knew she needed to get her finances back on track.

“I can’t live like that,” she remembers thinking.

Since signing up for Credit Sesame in January 2017, Nyang has paid off that $ 17,500 pile of debt and raised her score from 495 to 663. That’s a 168-point jump.

Melinda Smieja: + 284 Points

In 2005, Melinda Smieja’s 13-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor.

“So here I am a single mom, and my daughter gets sick,” she explains. “And I’m like, ‘What am I gonna do?’”

Between continuing to care for her younger daughter and moving from Seabeck, Washington, to Seattle to be near her 13-year-old’s medical care, she racked up credit card debt.

“I used [a credit card] for dinners, I used it for food,” she says. “For a place to stay. It got to the point where all of my credit cards were maxed out.”

Her credit score was down to 480 by the time she checked. And she’d racked up somewhere between $ 20,000 and $ 30,000 in debt on 11 credit cards.

In 2010, an email campaign led her to Credit Sesame, a new company (at the time) offering an easier way to monitor your credit history.

“It was something that I had been searching for [without realizing it],” Smieja explains.

It made her overwhelming situation manageable.

“I could look and I could say, ‘Okay, this is what’s all going on here. This is my debt. This is what’s happening. This is what’s making my credit [interest] high.’”

And she could finally tackle her debts, one at a time. The work wasn’t quick. It was slow and steady — but it paid off.

In 2016, for the first time, Smieja’s credit score hit 680, crossing the line of what lenders consider “good credit.” By late 2017, it was up to 764.

Dana Sitar: +68 Points

At 30, Dana Sitar’s history with credit cards, student loans and medical bills was pretty bad.

Student loan interest was piling up. Hospital bills were out to collection agencies. No one would give her a credit card. She landed a loan for a new car by the skin of her teeth. Her security deposits for car rentals and apartments were through the roof.

She wanted to fix it, but didn’t even know where to start.

Sitar, an editor for The Penny Hoarder, found Credit Sesame in 2016, and today, she’s breathing a little easier.

Credit Sesame, Sitar writes for The Penny Hoarder, is “answering all the questions swirling in my head, keeping me awake at night and threatening a panic attack every time I authorize a credit check.”

Since she started tracking her credit score with the app, she’s watched it rise — slowly but surely — by 68 points.

“Motivated by the easy access to my free credit report card through the app,” she says, “I haven’t been able to ignore my credit like I used to.”

Are Black People Hindering Diversity and Inclusion Progress?

In January, BLACK ENTERPRISE posted an article that featured one of my Facebook posts “16 Things Black People Do to Annoy White People.” Social media tried to rip it apart. For the first time in my life, I pissed a lot of black people off.

Let’s rewind: I have spent my entire career giving black people a voice and fighting for diversity and inclusion.

Fast-forward to now: It was extremely disheartening that one of my first national forays on a black platform was negatively received, especially by black people. The article didn’t offer the context around my post, so out of context, the meaning was lost. I’m a rational person with 20-plus years in diversity and communications. So the first thing I did was go to social media to put context to the article to explain why I was compiling the information. To many — it made sense, but I soon realized many more did not care about the rationale behind the post.

The Post

In case you missed it, my original post asked white people what black people do that irritate them. I didn’t ask black people the same question because I have been black for 45 years. I have a pretty good grasp on what those things are, but I do realize black people are not all the same. I have held many forums and conversations with thousands of us to understand our different thoughts and feelings. Also, having worked in this field for as long as I have, I was pretty sure I knew the answers white people would have, but that is a part of the problem. We “think” we know how each race feels without actually speaking with them to gain understanding. After asking a few white people around the office, I posted it to see what kind of responses it would elicit.

Emotions got heated on Facebook, but it got ridiculous after BE posted it. Radio personality and actor D.L. Hughley retweeted without much comment, and from there it blew up. I was called a coon. My mother was called a coon. I was another black woman looking for a white savior. I was bringing down the entire black race by providing a platform for white people to be racist in telling us how they feel. The white people who did answer my post by sharing their thoughts were harassed, ridiculed, and disrespected.

I was hotter than fish grease. Nobody disrespects mom. Once I calmed down, I took some time to think. I was left with one burning question: Do people of color (mainly black people) bear some responsibility in hindering the progress of diversity and inclusion?

Before you get pissed off again hear me out. I know that unconscious bias plays a huge part in people of color not getting hired for jobs or earning promotions. As a diversity expert, I know systemic racism is a part of many companies and that inclusive cultures don’t truly exist. This means many of us still don’t have a voice to share ideas, to provide meaningful collaboration, or to act in opposition to how we feel.

How are Blacks Hindering Progress?

By now you’re saying, if you know all that, how is it that we are hindering progress? Regardless of how we feel, it will never be all about us. If we don’t figure out how to meet people where they are, we will continue to stifle our inclusive growth. This growth can transfer into a skill set that would enable you to have a stronger voice at work, with family and in valued relationships. It is imperative to know what others are thinking. Not because you need to validate their feelings, but because learning how each other thinks can bring about strategic change or at the very least, let you know where you stand in someone else’s mind.

If we are to move the needle toward inclusion, we cannot let the stereotypical, angry responses define us. If we do, then who are we? And how do we have open conversations with others, if we allow our emotions to overtake our good sense and humanity? A simple mental paradigm shift can make the difference in acquiring a new skill, but this won’t happen overnight. So I invite you to take this journey with me as we talk through the difficult conversations. Follow me at #RishaTalks to stay tuned and add to the conversation.

More than 1 million people cut the cord during the most recent quarter

Cord cutting vs cable

Dish Network announced today that it shed 334,000 subscribers during the fourth quarter, with a substantial portion of the departures being attributed to the ongoing dispute with HBO that’s caused HBO programming to be blacked out for Dish subscribers.

If that wasn’t enough, Dish president and CEO Erik Carlson added that there’s been essentially no progress in talks with HBO over the blackout — the first in Dish’s almost 50-year history, which likely spooked many subscribers to go ahead and cancel especially with April’s season 8 premiere of Game of Thrones getting closer and closer.

Kourtney Kardashian – Here’s What The KUWK Star Wants To Teach People Through Her Co-Parenting With Scott Disick

It is a well-known fact to Keeping Up with the Kardashians fans that Kourtney Kardashian and her ex, Scott Disick are better co-parents to their three kids than most! That being said, the reality TV star got candid about their co-parenting relationship and revealed why it’s important for it to work, aside from the sake of their young ones.

Kourt and Scott have been through a lot in their nine-years-long relationship before putting an end to it, but nowadays, they seem to be in a great place!

As fans know, the exes often go on vacations together with the children, and some of those have even included the man’s current girlfriend, Sofia Richie, which only proves how healthy their co-parenting is!

While stopping by the Today Show on Thursday, Kourtney got candid about her and Scott’s relationship and what message she’s trying to send through it.

‘I feel like I can show a message, too, of like parents can get along and work together and travel together. And I think it’s a good message to show other people. I am not doing it for that reason, but I think the positive things that we are doing is nice too,’ the mother of three shared.

The Kardashian was a guest during the third hour of the show to also promote her cosmetics reform.

This comes nearly a year after Kourtney met up with congressional leaders and discussed updating the cosmetics legislation so the products generally used would no longer contain dangerous chemicals.

She has now teamed up with the Environmental Working Group to reach that goal.

‘I shouldn’t have to be standing in the bathroom scanning to know what products I am using are safe or not safe. Especially products for my kids,’ the star argued.

People Share Why They Don’t Use Financial Advisers; Some Alternative Ways to Get Financial Help

Many people just do not want to meet with a financial adviser despite the fact that using one may provide numerous financial advantages. Financial advisers provide objectivity of financial situations and give advice to help establish a more secure financial position.

A few personal finance professionals, authors, teachers and bloggers, from the Elevate Community, dedicated to uplifting people of color financially, shared their perspectives:

“Just Not Ready”

Just like weight loss, financial wellness is one of the top three new year resolutions and personal goals. Most people generally know what to do to improve their financial situation, but some are just not ready to do it.

“We like comfort!” says Andre Albritton of The Millennials Next Door. “A financial adviser will give recommendations outside of our comfort zone which can be a frightening experience.”

Money mantras like “save more and spend less” and “pay yourself first” have been stated by every financial expert. The reality is if a person is not mentally ready, they will not execute any plan.

Cost

On television, rich and famous people seem to be the only ones talking about meeting with financial advisers. This creates the perception that it takes thousands or millions of dollars to work with a financial adviser. The consumers living paycheck to paycheck with minimal or no assets (like a home, investments, etc.) may presume it is too expensive to meet with a financial adviser.

Many middle-class Americans are working hard to pay their bills and make ends meet. Paying to meet with a financial adviser may seem premature or unrealistic.

Denial

“People put off seeing a financial adviser for the same reason they avoid going to the doctor or dentist” shares Alfred Edmond Jr., BLACK ENTERPRISE Your Money Your Life Podcast host and co-author of Loving in the Grownzone. “They don’t want to deal with the choices, remedies, or lifestyle changes that will likely be necessary to improve their condition.”

People that practice avoidance in the hope that the problems will go away, or correct itself will deny the problem, and chose not to deal with the financial situation. Unfortunately, avoiding the dis-ease in the bank account will leave a person vulnerable to more financial hardships.

“People are embarrassed about their current (financial) situation and believe their choices got them in that predicament” explains Atiya Brown of Live Financially Savvy Podcast. “Since they don’t know the extent, they may tend to ignore and avoid.”

Pride

Almost 10 years ago, my pride almost put me in the poor house. I remember being ashamed to admit my major money mistakes and felt like a failure. I locked myself in a self-inflicted private prison of shame.

People suffer in silence because of their pride and the shame they feel because of making money mistakes. Making the decision to let go of the shame and ask for guidance will help to release the guilt.

Product Pushers

Julien Saunders of rich & REGULAR states, “Some financial advisers have a tendency to be pushy. Although well-intended, some (financial advisers) can make a person feel pressured. Consumers must fully understand the implications, alternatives, or cost to them as the investor.”

Some financial advisers are perceived as product pushers. Product pushing financial professionals turn off and scare away many consumers. Even though consumers know that financial advisers sell products, they do not want to feel pressured into purchasing products they don’t understand.

Stranger Danger

People do business with people they like, know, and trust. Sharing secret financial skeletons with  someone you don’t know can be extremely uncomfortable. It is even more frightening to give control of your money and assets to that stranger.

Patrina K. Dixon of It’$ My Money says, “Some people have trust issues. Therefore, if they do not trust the financial advisor, they will not be safe to share relevant information the adviser may need to assist the client.

Some Alternative Options to Using Financial Advisers

Many are not ready for the financial commitment to meet or work with a financial adviser. Here are some alternative options and resources to help you “start where you are.”

Financial Blogs and Podcasts

Financial blogs are an excellent resource for free money tips and strategies. Here are a few blogs and podcasts to check out.

Tanya Rapley’s My Fab Finance Blog teaches millennial women of color how to regain control of their finances, overcome financial challenges, and pay off debt.

Talaat and Tai McNeely host the His And Her Money Podcast. Their podcast and blog aim to help married couples reach their financial goals together.

Marsha Barnes’ The Finance Bar Blog connects individuals to their financial wellness. She offers one-on-one coaching and an app that shows where your money is going.

Online Financial Tribes

John Hope Bryant, the founder of Operation Hope stated, “If you hang around nine broke people, you will be the tenth.” Connecting with people who have similar financial goals or have achieved the success desired is essential to financial success. Here are a few online financial tribes to check out.

The Live Richer Academy founded by Tiffany Aliche, who is known as The Budgetnista, is a membership-based online platform that offers courses designed to help participants take their finances to the next level.

Founded by Sandy Smith, of Yes I Am Cheap blog, Hustle Crew is a private Facebook group community that provides resources on entrepreneurship and starting a side hustle.

Financial Coaches

Financial coaches educate clients on the basics of money and credit management. They help their clients establish financial goals and create a customized plan to reach those goals. Financial coaches act as accountability partners to encourage and challenge their clients to success.

Financial coaching services range free through a non-profit programs to a few hundred dollars per hour to work with popular financial coaches privately.

Here Are the Reasons People Believe the Super Bowl Halftime Show Could Bless Fans With a SpongeBob SquarePants Tribute

Thanks to some hints floating around the internet from Maroon 5 and others, SpongeBob SquarePants fans have high hopes that the famous cartoon character might be making a Super Bowl LIII cameo.

One main reason for the theory comes down to a brief appearance of the Pineapple-Under-the-Sea-dwelling creature in a tweeted video that Maroon 5, the headlining Super Bowl 2019 Half Time performers, shared earlier in January. About 30 seconds in, a cryptic, brief snippet of SpongeBob appears.

The SpongeBob fan theories

While SpongeBob and Maroon 5 don’t normally have any particular connection, SpongeBob does have a song — “Sweet Victory” — that was performed in a season two episode of the show called “Band Geeks” by the Bikini Bottom Super Band. Longtime fans think this means “Sweet Victory” may end up on Maroon 5’s set list, or in some other way SpongeBob will be involved in the Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show.

While there’s currently no confirmation one way or another, it’s worth noting that many responses to Maroon 5’s video teaser are related to the potential for a SpongeBob song cameo. And the SpongeBob snapshot in the video is the only cartoon that appears: the rest of the footage is clips of the band’s preparations and performances and hints of Travis Scott and Big Boi, two rappers who will also be featured at the show.

The Episode

There’s more to it, too: a Change.org petition was set up earlier in January calling for a “Sweet Victory” tribute at the Super Bowl. It’s collected nearly 1.2 million signatures so far. The reason? To honor SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg, who passed away in November last year.

The GIF

In another bump for the theory, Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s Twitter account even shared a GIF of SpongeBob dancing in his band outfit all the way back in December, adding fuel to fans’ fire about the potential cameo.

The Bet

People are even betting on it — literally. The odds, according to an online betting pool, are in favor of SpongeBob appearing at the Super Bowl, in particular popping up in an inflatable costume.

In another more under-the-radar hint, according to CNET, Rodger Bumpass, the voice actor behind the character of Squidward, reportedly posted on Facebook that he was going to be making some kind of Super Bowl introduction for the Halftime Show.

SpongeBob fans, at least, were convinced.

13 Pro Budgeting Tips for People Who Wonder Where Every Paycheck Goes

A monthly budget is like Google Maps for your finances: You follow it because you don’t know where you’re going without it.

If you’re new to budgeting, don’t be discouraged by a few — or many —  wrong turns and closed roads along the way. The longer you stick with it, the better you get.

And with a few simple tips, you can be well on your way before you know it.

13 Budgeting Tips Anyone Can Follow

Whether you’re trying to pay off credit card debt or just boost your savings, here are some budgeting tips that will help you make (and stick to) your budget.

1. Set Your Goals Before You Make Your Budget

Without a goal, a budget is just a spreadsheet that tells you to have less fun.

Think about what you want in the next five to 10 years, and figure out what financial situation you need to get there. Whatever your goals are, know that any sound financial foundation starts with an emergency fund.

You might then want to pay off debt, save for a down payment on a home, or increase your savings.

Decide where you want to be financially next year and the year after. Knowing what you want to do with your money will guide you as you make your budget, and it will greatly increase the likelihood that you’ll stick to it.

2. There’s No One Size-Fits-All Budget. Find a Plan That Works for You

There are so many budgeting methods out there, and every guru says theirs is the best. But ultimately you have to chose the one that works for you.

If you’ve got an ambitious goal, we recommend trying a zero-based budget first.

To make a zero-based budget, start by prioritizing your expenses from essential to nonessential. Then, assign every dollar in your paycheck a “job” on the list until you run out.

The most important things — housing, food, minimum debt payments — get taken care of first, and you can disburse the remaining money for your goals and fun in their order of importance to you.

Zero-based budgeting is great for Type A planners. If you prefer to be a little more loosey-goosey, a 50/20/30 budget is a great option. With this approach, you don’t have to think too much about your expenses. You just allocate 50% of your income to your needs, 20% to savings and 30% to wants.

3. Use a Budgeting App or the Envelope System to Track Your Spending on the Go

A woman creates three different envelopes to control her spending. The envelopes say expenses, savings and fun.

It’s hard to lug around your laptop or binder to keep up with each budget category, so a budgeting app is a great tool for updating your budget on the go. There are many out there, whether you like to enter each transaction manually or see everything updated automatically.

If your goal is to take an intense look at your spending, manually tracking your transactions is going to work best. Once you’ve been budgeting for a while and you’ve got a grasp on your spending, syncing transactions automatically works fine.

If you still can’t stick to your budget, the envelope system can help you succeed without so much emphasis on constant tracking.

After you decide how much money goes toward each of your expenses, put the money you’ll spend for each expense in a given week into separate envelopes and carry them with you. Once an envelope is empty, you’re done spending in that category. You can keep receipts in the envelope and examine your purchases later.

Envelopes are best for categories you’re prone to overspending on. You probably don’t need envelopes for things like gas and utilities, because you’re not likely to go on a gas-buying spree.

Popular categories for envelopes are restaurants, groceries, clothes and entertainment.

4. Use the Past to Predict Your Future Income and Expenses

Whether you choose a zero-based budget, 50/20/30 budget or some other method, you’re going to have to calculate your income and the amount of money you want to put toward every category or individual expense.

Salaried employees will get off easy when they calculate their incomes. If you have a variable income or side hustles, you’ll need to do some digging.

Look back at your income from the past six months, or as far back as you can if you’ve been at your current job for less time. Then find your average monthly income and the average amount of each paycheck.

Expenses like utilities can also be unpredictable. Check your online statements to see which months were higher versus which were lower so you can make future budgets. You may not be able to take that impromptu weekend getaway the month your electric bill will be $ 300, but it might be totally feasible during a month it’s going to be $ 75.

5. Make a Monthly Budget AND a Budget for Each Paycheck

A woman draws a budget in a bullet journal.

Since most bills are monthly, it’s important to make a budget for the entire month to get a clear picture of everything due. But by breaking that down further into paycheck-by-paycheck budgets, you can pace your spending so you don’t end up penniless by the 20th.

You can make categories as vague or as specific as you want, but put as many barriers in place to prevent yourself from overspending in the first half of the month.

This is another time when the envelope system helps you, but you could do the same thing with reloadable gift cards for specific stores.

6. Don’t Confuse Infrequent Expenses With Emergencies

These aren’t the unexpected expenses that you’d cover with your miscellaneous or emergency categories. Infrequent expenses are the charges that come up once or twice a year — but we always seem to forget will happen.

Like when it’s Dec. 23 and you’re still not done with your holiday shopping. Who could’ve predicted Christmas would be on Dec. 25 AGAIN?!

Examples include things like auto insurance, car registration, license renewal, vet visits, car repairs and membership fees.

Keep a chart that includes your semiannual and annual expenses to determine what you need to save every month to cover them. Open a separate checking account or savings account where you put money every month to cover these expenses.

7. Remember the Obvious: You Need to Spend Less

Once the planning is done, it’s time for the hardest part: sticking to your plan.

If you’re in the habit of spending more than you make, your first priority is to find ways to save money.

We don’t mean you need to find better sales and clip more coupons. As much as we love a good coupon stack, the most important thing you can do is buy and spend less.

Some of our favorite tips to cut spending are:

  • Make a meal plan, and stick to your grocery list.
  • Prep meals on Sundays so you’re less likely to eat out during the week.
  • Opt for free events in your area instead of pricy activities or bars.
  • Try running and body-weight workouts instead of paying for a gym membership.

There are countless ways to save money. Our best tip: Start by slashing expenses that are making a big dent in your budget instead of shaving pennies off already manageable ones.

Do everything you can to resist the temptation to make impulse purchases or spend beyond your budget. An easy way to do this: Leave your credit card at home, and use cash envelopes or a debit card.

8. Use the 30-Day Rule to Stop Impulse Buys

If you still need to curb impulse buying, follow the 30-day rule: When you want to buy something that’s not in your budget, make note of the item in question for next month’s budget and revisit it in 30 days. If you still want it, you can consider buying it if you can afford it.

Online shoppers can use the Icebox Chrome extension that allows you to choose a 30-day “cool off” period before you can buy something.

9. Negotiate Your Bills to Save Money

People often take for granted that what they’re paying for their phone, internet and insurance is what they have to pay. By contacting your providers to negotiate your bills, you could lower your bills once or twice every year.

You can do this yourself by calling all your companies or using a negotiation app like Trim or Empower.

If you’re trying it yourself, be friendly, ask for more than you want, and back down from there. Stop when you feel you’ve reached a good deal. Oh, and be prepared to be on the phone for a while.

10. Remember That Things Will Go Wrong

Student loans and credit cards aren’t paid off overnight. And the perfect budget isn’t made in a day.

Things will change and go wrong. Impulse purchases will be made, and budgets will get obliterated by life’s little surprises. The most important tip for budgeting is to not give up.

When things go wrong, alter your budget to compensate. Move money from one category to another, put less in savings, or try a side hustle to add some wiggle room. And know that sometimes you’ll find yourself ripping up the entire budget and starting again from scratch in the middle of the month.

If budgeting continues to be difficult, try adding a small miscellaneous category somewhere to cover surprise expenses. These expenses come up often and derail the best budgeters. Make a category to cover them, and figure out where to put them later.

Eventually, you’ll get this whole budgeting thing down. But it’s going to start with a lot of bumps in the road.

How to Budget on an Inconsistent Income

A man places money in a tip jar.

Living off tips, sales commissions or freelance work can make for a flexible lifestyle, but it also makes it hard to budget.

When you have an inconsistent income, you can follow all the budgeting tips above. But there’s one thing you should add to your budget to make it easier for yourself during low-income months.

11. Have an Income-Sinking Fund for When Your Income Is Less

When you calculate your income and get your monthly average, compare it with your income each month throughout the year. In months you expect to make more than average, take the difference and transfer it to your income-sinking fund. It’s a separate account where you put money you plan to take out in the near future for a specific purpose, such as supplementing your income on low-earning months.

During months when you expect to make less, you can withdraw up to your monthly average to help with expenses.

Tips for Budgeting With a Partner

Another challenge is budgeting with a partner. It can feel like too many cooks in the kitchen are ruining the budget soup, but when there are two incomes, lives and futures at stake, everyone involved needs to have a stake in the budget.

12. Hold a Monthly Budget Meeting

The first tip is to have a monthly budget meeting that both of you are required to attend.

Whoever enjoys budgeting more can make the budget, but the other partner still has to contribute something. Whether they change one line or many, we repeat: They must contribute.

The budget can still be flexible and change as needed during the month, but both partners should be consulted about big changes. Feeling included is important to working as a team on your finances.

13. ‘Subtle’ Hints Can Help if Your Partner Hates to Budget

If your partner isn’t on board with budgets, they’ll need a little convincing.

Ashley Patrick of Budgets Made Easy tried having budget meetings with her husband, but he wasn’t interested.

Patrick desperately wanted her husband to be part of their financial planning, but he wanted her to handle everything. So she turned to money-saving guru Dave Ramsey’s podcast.

“The biggest thing that fully got him on board was playing Dave Ramsey podcasts in the car, especially when I did it on a long road trip,” she said. “Hours of Dave Ramsey helped change his mindset.”

Both people need to be flexible with the other’s priorities and supportive of their goals.

Budgeting together won’t be easy at first — but it’ll lead to a lifetime of financial strength and happiness.

16 Things Black People Say or Do That Annoy White People at Work (And In General)

We published a list of things that white people should never say to their black co-workers. Now, Risha Grant, a public relations professional and diversity and inclusion expert, asked white people on her Facebook feed, to list the things that black people say or may do that annoy them.

Here are 16 of the top annoyances (mild and otherwise) that white people said they felt about black people mostly in the workplace, but also in general (these are posted verbatim from Risha Grant’s Facebook feed):

When you want to be friends with them at work but there are other black girls so you just can’t get close cuz ur just the white girl who is held at arms length. You get the feeling that they don’t believe you wanna be their friend. They think we are too different.

…there have been times that conversation with a Black person somehow turns to the topic of inequality…I have no way of truly knowing all the privilege that I enjoy as a white, straight male. I just know there are times, I’d like to learn more and the door closes.

…any time a black person walks into a room — say a new employee in an office — they make a beeline to the other black faces. It can be disappointing because I may know from advance notification about your hiring that you and I have a lot in common, but I have to work harder to be your friend.

On social media, a lot of my activist black friends will post complaints about “white people say …” “white people think…” “white people do …” And I always feel like saying, “Not ALL white people!”

[RELATED: 27 THINGS WHITE PEOPLE SHOULD NEVER, EVER SAY TO THEIR BLACK CO-WORKERS]

more common amongst my black friends than any other group. I don’t like it when black people bring up my ‘white privilege’ for the reason they aren’t as well off as they THINK I am

I feel uncomfortable joining amazing organizations if prefaced with ‘black’. Like black nurses association. These are amamazazazing colleagues I want to network with but….I’m not black.

…have noticed a lot of times when I expect the black friend of mine to follow through or follow up on a conversation, weather [sic] it be to contact someone in business or to get back with me with some information it doesn’t always happen. So I would say for me it’s follow through or follow up when conversations are made about moving forward with something.

when I was working with children it seemed more common for black adults to come down on a child for crying or having emotions (particularly when little boys and young men cried, telling them to “Man up.”)

I can say that in my traditional classrooms over the years I’ve had more black kids that seem to go right to fighting on the playground- not a lot of build up, just straight to throwing punches

“The victim.” The ones that make any non black race feel like a dog for what their ancestors may or may not have done during the periods of slavery, and act like the current period non black races owe them something for it.

Speaking as if they are uneducated. not accents but refusing to speak correctly.

…it seems like African Americans never use a crosswalk. Even if it’s right in front of them, they will go out of their way NOT to cross at the light. Is there something there or am I imagining things?

Poor grammar

It really irritates me that y’all can dance so much better than me! (No one who witnessed it has EVER forgotten your valiant attempt to teach me the Wobble!)

…please don’t assume all white people support Trump. Because we don’t.

A white person has to walk on eggshells with caveats to keep overly sensitive people from being offended — that seems to be one thing that black people do—get offended to easily.

In an article for TulsaWorld.com about her controversial Facebook question, Grant wrote that it took “almost two days to manage the 206 comments, shares, direct messages, and personal texts I received.” She went on to say, “Exercise that muscle to help you understand that regardless of how you identify, we are all a part of the human race. Once we understand that, we will better understand each other; and with that comes grace, respect, and total acceptance.”

Michael Avenatti Trolls Trump at the Oscars of Porn: ‘He’s F*cked More People Than Anybody’

Ethan Miller/Getty

LAS VEGAS, Nevada—On Saturday night, celebrity attorney Michael Avenatti, a man whose quick ascent to mainstream fame came almost as suddenly as his decline this past winter, accompanied his client Stormy Daniels on the red carpet of the 36th annual AVN Awards, known as the “Oscars of Porn.”

Avenatti, who briefly flirted with a 2020 run until a domestic violence allegation from December, spent more of his time talking about centrist policy than smut. Though he endorsed Medicare for All and free college, the lawyer also expressed wariness of the Abolish Ice movement, and a familiar skepticism against a Green New Deal, calling it “unrealistic.”

“I think we certainly have to figure out the health care situation,” Avenatti told The Daily Beast. “There’s too many Americans that don’t have insurance and are concerned about their health care and rightfully so. I do think we have to have a strong southern border, but that doesn’t mean we necessarily have to build a wall. I think we’ve got to find a way for each kid in America to go to college if they want to go to college. Above all else, whoever the Democrats nominate, they’ve got to be a fighter. If Trump is the nominee on the other side, he’s not just going to roll over, you’re going to have to take the fight to him.”

This May Be The Best Skin Treatment for People of Color With Dark Marks

Melanin is a beautiful gift from God that gives people of color added protection from UV rays, skin cancer, and signs of aging. Not to mention, it also glistens in the sun with a magical glow. However, on the flip side, those with pigmented skin are prone to hyperpigmentation — a skin condition that causes dark marks and acne scars when excessive melanin is produced. It can be triggered by anything from a rash, scratch, pimple, or inflammation. To make matters worse, this unsightly ailment can take anywhere from three months to two years to get rid of.

African Americans are most susceptible to hyperpigmentation because their melanin-rich skin tends to be more reactive than other people of color. Fortunately, there’s a treatment that can reduce the appearance of dark spots called dermalinfusion. According to Cheryl M. Medina, a physician assistant specializing in aesthetics, this treatment works wonders for those with brown skin. The New York-born Filipina has been working in skin care and practicing dermatology for seven years at Skin Deep Clinics, where she specializes in treating darker skin tones with a focus on acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and anti-aging. She also serves a range of influencers and rising stars, like fashion designer LaQuan Smith and DJ Natasha Diggs, at the Queens-based clinic.

In an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE, Medina breaks down a popular dermalinfusion treatment as well as common myths about skincare.

dermalinfusion

Cheryl M. Medina, PA-C

BE: How does the Dermalinfusion treatment work?

One of the most popular and effective dermalinfusion treatments is called “The Silk Peel.”  It’s a wonderful treatment that gets great results in treating acne, dark spots, acne scarring, and anti-aging. Similar to a microdermabrasion treatment, it breaks down the top layer of dead skin revealing newer skin and encouraging new skin cells to the surface, which gives you a nice glow and even skin texture.

As it is abrading your top layer, it forms a hyperbaric chamber with the skin allowing it to suction whatever can be manipulated out of your pore. So all the bacteria that is trapped in your skin gets eliminated and collected in a collection jar. After the treatment, you get to see all the wonderful things that was pulled out of your face.

Not only does it exfoliate and cleanse the skin, it also nourishes the skin.  It is a wet microdermabrasion meaning, it delivers a solution back into the skin through the pores whilst they are engaged. Depending on what your skin is presenting, we are able to deliver back into the dermis nourishment and treatment in the form of hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, a brightening solution, as well as salicylic acid that helps prevent acne.

Common Skincare Myths

BE: Can you debunk a few skincare myths that you’ve heard?

MYTH: Greasy foods make me break out.

FACT: Sebaceous glands produce sebum or oil to coat our skin for protection and pH optimization.  Greasy foods do not trigger these glands to produce more oil. In fact, it is the behavior whilst eating greasy foods that can add oil to the skin. For example, touching your face with greasy hands after eating greasy foods adds oil to the face and can lead to a breakout by clogging your pores. Be mindful of touching your face whilst eating and of the grease dribble on your chin when you take a bite!  Sugar actually does ignite those sebaceous glands to produce more oil.  So, what you should be mindful of is your sugar intake.

MYTH: I can use my body soap to wash my face in the shower.  It cleanses all the same.

FACT: Soaps that foam have a foaming agent called a detergent. That’s right. The same agent you use to wash your clothes with.  Detergents are drying agents so using foamy soaps will dry out your skin!  That’s why after you wash your face it feels tight and super dry or “clean.” In doing so, you have stripped what’s called the natural acid mantle barrier, a light layer of oil meant to keep your skin at its proper pH level in order for it to function optimally, and throughout the day, you will notice that your skin will produce a lot more oil. It does so in order to compensate for the loss of oil that you stripped away with the foamy wash. Milky cream wash or gel wash is best!

MYTH: Black don’t crack. I don’t need sunscreen!

FACT: Although it is true, darker skin tones do age better; it is due to the oil that we produce that keeps our skin moist and supple so that our skin does not degrade as quickly. But sunscreen is used primarily to avoid skin cancer as well as aging. Darker skin tones are not invincible to skin cancer. It is imperative that you protect your skin from the UVA and UVB rays especially these days with our ozone layer depleting.

As far as aging, darker skin tones are susceptible to hyperpigmentation, dark spots, or age spots. Using an SPF 30-55 daily will prevent these spots from appearing or getting darker. Also, try putting sunscreen on the back of your hands daily as well. Your hands show age quickly due to its overexposure to the UV light.

Treat Your Skin Right

BE: What should people of color do on a daily basis to maintain healthy, clear skin?

It is important to have a proper skincare regimen, starting with a milky or gel-non foaming facial cleanser. You should cleanse your face daily and add a light moisturizer with a broad spectrum (that protects against UVA and UVB rays) SPF between 30-55 that contain antioxidants to nourish the skin.

The most important part of a skincare routine is being a member of exfoliation nation! You must exfoliate regularly. I tell patients, in the beginning, to start natural with a simple sugar and honey scrub that they can make at home with 1/4 cup sugar + 1-2 tbspns of honey. Mix into a puddy and scrub your face for 60sec.  Wash off and apply nourishment to this skin in the form of a moisturizer with antioxidants. This should be done at night, three times per week. Then later to challenge the skin, you can start using chemicals like glycolic acid or retinol to exfoliate the skin.

Exfoliating allows your pores to breath, encourages new skin growth, gives your skin a healthy glow, and also prevents bacteria or acne to grow. Diet also plays a major role in skin health!  You should eat foods that are high in antioxidants like deep greens, acai berries, pomegranate, etc. However, the most important part of your diet is drinking tons of water. Water helps your skin and body rids itself of toxins! Three water bottles a day should be your daily goal at the very least.

BE: What type of products do you recommend for people who suffer from hyper-pigmentation?

When dealing with hyperpigmentation, the process is twofold:

First, you must work out the skin. Meaning, you have to exfoliate regularly. Dark spots are a form of scar tissue.  You can lighten it by exfoliating the dead skin off and encouraging new skin to come to the surface.  Remember after you exfoliate you must, must, must wear sunscreen to protect the new skin from the sun’s damage.  Otherwise, the dark spot will only get darker!

The second part is actually treating the hyperpigmentation with a topical. Products that contain hydroquinone 4%, bearberry, licorice, citric acid and kojic acid help to brighten or lighten the skin.  At Skin Deep Clinics, we offer Skin Tone Pads that contain kojic acid, bearberry and hydroquinone to brighten the skin.  They are easy to use and breed wonderful, safe results.

Why do we go back to people who hurt us? A sexologist explains this unhealthy (and common) habit

Why do we go back to people who hurt us? A sexologist explains this unhealthy (and common) habit

Why do we go back to people who hurt us? A sexologist explains this unhealthy (and common) habit

Shelby Sells is an artist, photojournalist, and sexologist known for her exploration of modern sexuality. She has produced numerous videos, interviews, and articles on the subject, and is a sought-after speaker on matters of love, sex, and relationships. Sells is finishing her degree in Psychology with a Human Sexuality focus in hopes of becoming a sex therapist.

We see it time and time again in media, in our friend and family groups, and sometimes even in our personal decisions: The resurrection of painful and toxic relationships. The question is, “Why do we go back people who hurt us?” From a third-party perspective, it’s easy to point the finger and identify the harmful patterns in a person’s behavior, but is it that simple from an insider’s perspective? Not always, and here’s why.

We, as humans, are creatures of habit, meaning that once we develop a routine, it can be hard for us to break free from it.

The instability of an unhealthy relationship provides some folks with a sense of ease, and that’s why they’re drawn to it. There’s nothing to risk or lose when you know the end game is always the same.

For some, familiar pain is a source of comfort, so it comes as no surprise that those people find themselves in a constant cycle of hurt. Where this pain pattern stems from is unique to each individual. It can be related to childhood traumas or variations of abuse at any age. When pain is all you know, it can be challenging to seek alternative behaviors.

There’s also the instances in which we are blinded by love. It’s easy to get caught up in a relationship, even when it’s toxic. Later, we’ll tell ourselves “Maybe they’ll change” or “Maybe things will be different this time” in order to justify going back. Frankly, the drama itself can be addicting for some people. One friend told me that she gave her ex another chance because she believed he had to make up for how he had mistreated her in the past. While people do have the capacity to change, more often than not a person won’t change their innate nature.

Another reason people go back to partners who have hurt them? Because it’s easy.

Investing time and energy into a relationship is a lot of work, and the thought of starting over can seem daunting. Dating takes a lot of effort. Opening ourselves up to someone new inevitably comes with the potential to be hurt again. It’s scary, and that fear alone is enough to keep people at bay. Plus, why start over with someone new when our hurtful partner already knows us so well? It’s especially easy to run back to someone familiar if we are going through an emotional rough patch. When we’ve made ourselves vulnerable to someone and labeled them as a person who knows us, it can be hard to categorize them as unsafe. When you’ve had some distance from a partner, it’s also easy to romanticize the good memories until, suddenly, the bad memories are less significant. After all, repressing negative memories is a tool we use to protect ourselves from re-experiencing trauma.

Lastly, reviving relationships with people who have hurt us has to do with self-worth issues. Trying to break free from a toxic relationship, and then returning to it, feeds and fuels an unhealthy cycle of low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. These feelings can make us believe that we are undeserving of, unworthy of, or not good enough for a better love. This idea is heartbreaking—we are all deserving of love and healthy companionship.

Sometimes we go back to unhealthy relationships to seek validation from a partner who was unable to give us what we desired.

We fight to try and gain what they could never provide us the first time around. Also, it’s not uncommon for people in toxic relationships to experience a sort of “Stockholm syndrome” in which they begin to favor their abusers. Many people in this situation are convinced (either by themselves, by their partners, or both) that this is the “best” relationship they’ll ever have. Of course, this is untrue, and a tactic used to justify abuse and neglect.

The good news is that if you or a loved one find yourself in a situation like this, there is hope.

While it may be difficult to leave an unhealthy relationship, there are an abundance of resources out there to help you through the process. Ask yourself if your needs are being met in this relationship and if the pros outweigh the cons. Therapy is a vital outlet in working through the pain, letting go, and unlearning toxic patterns and behaviors. A colleague of mine, Crissy Milazzo, created a website called youfindtherapy.com that helps people access affordable therapy.

Besides therapy, there are a number of support groups, books, and online resources available to those who are trying to make changes in their relationship routine. Remember, a healthy relationship is one where your partner brings out the best in you, where you feel safe and secure, where you have shared goals and values, and where you are both equally emotionally invested in each other and in your future together. It’s never too late to break free from pain and embrace love.

If you or someone you know is an abusive relationship and needs help, check out these resources from The Center For Relationship Abuse Awareness or The National Domestic Violence Hotline. You can call The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or chat with a counselor online here

Prediction: As shows continue to leave Netflix, some people will return to DVDs

Netflix DVDs

Next year is going to be pretty interesting for Netflix subscribers, to put it mildly. According to analytics firm Jumpshot, more than half of the streaming giant’s 50 most-popular shows are licensed from companies like NBCUniversal and WarnerMedia that are planning to start streaming services of their own.

That’s potentially bad news for Netflix users who are also fans of its top licensed shows like The Office and Grey’s Anatomy. Because since everyone from new streaming upstarts to industry stalwarts like Disney are planning to launch Netflix rivals in 2019, that means they might be inclined to yank their popular titles from Netflix. And if they don’t, they’ll no doubt charge Netflix a pretty penny to keep them there.

Toya Wright Sends An Important Message To Fans Ahead Of Christmas With A Family Photo – People Say That Reigny Is The Spitting Image Of Her Dad

Toya Wright wanted to express something very important with her latest photo and message that she shared on her social media account. Check it out below:

Toya wrote ‘put down your phone and step away from the computer. Enjoy your family this holiday season. Happy Holidays from our Family to yours. 🎅🏽🎄🎁

Someone said ‘And meanwhile Your whole Entire Family is on phones and computers 😂🤣😂. Very Beautiful Family photo ❤’ Of course, Toya only wanted to highlight her message with the picture which is somewhat a sarcastic one.

Someone else said ‘Toya, you and your hubby and the baby was pretending for the camera, the two older girls were using their phone for real I’m sure lol.’

One of Toya’s fans said that Reingy looks just like her dad: ‘Reign looks JUST like her father OMGEEEEE!!!! Beautiful family❤

Another commenter posted ‘I am Happy to see you and your family so Happy. May God continue to Bless you, and I pray that he gives you all of your hearts desires. Blessings Sis.’

One other supported also believes that Reigny is Robert’s twin: ‘Reign don’t look exactly like her daddy ….he spit her out literally. She is him all over again.’

In other news, there were some rumors claiming that Toya and Robert made their relationship official, but it turned out that the rumors are not accurate.

It all began from a clip of TI And Tiny’s: Friends And Family Hustle, released on the 17th of December, Toya joked to Tiny that she and Robert had decided to get married privately. But it was only a joke.

Black Entrepreneurs Rejoice! People Are in the Mood to Spend This Holiday

Many retailers–whether owned by black entrepreneurs or white–will get an early gift with Americans expected to spend more this holiday shopping season than last year, a new survey shows.

Consumers overall are anticipated to spend $ 1,536 versus $ 1,226 a year ago, according to the 2018 Deloitte Holiday Survey of Consumers. A stronger economy and rising consumer confidence are among the biggest contributing factors for the gain and bullish outlook.

Holiday sales could top $ 1.1 trillion this year, up 5-5.6% from 2017. Online sales could reach $ 128 billion, rising some 17-22%. Purchases online will make up 57% of total sales while 36% will come from stores.

Mobile usage to buy goods for the festive season keeps rising, but other digital platforms like desktop, laptop, tablet, and social media are flattening in usage.

When it comes to giving presents to others, gift cards/certificates, clothing, and toys are respectively the top picks for consumers.

The average spend on gift cards this holiday season is projected at $ 139, up from $ 113 last year, and some 78% of people plan to shop for themselves during the holidays, spending cash mainly on food and liquor, clothing, and shoes.

The top destinations to buy goods this year will be online retailers and auction sites. Sixty percent of people will buy goods at those spots versus 55% in 2017. Conversely, 32% of us are likely to shop at traditional department stores, up 4% from 2017.

Naturally, the trend of online retailers giving brick-and-mortar stores beefed-up competition continues to rise.

Yet for consumers who plan to actually shop in stores instead of online, 60% plan to do so to interact with the product.

The ability to not pay shipping costs and shopping inside of stores for inspiration is why almost half of consumers – actually 47% each – will buy goods those ways.

There are other reasons for shopping in-store: It’s more fun and put folks in the holiday spirit, easier to make returns later and fulfills the need to buy goods immediately.

The survey was developed by Deloitte and done online by an independent research firm in September 2018. A national sample of 4,036 consumers were polled.

Disrespectful: Photographer Fakes Having Sex Atop Great Pyramid, People Are Outraged [Video]

There’s a photo going around of two people having sex on top of the Great Pyramid.

Despite the act itself being fake, Egyptian authorities are investigating and people all over the world are outraged by the disrespect.

To be clear — they did scale the pyramid, but they say the sex was simulated.

via Complex:

It was taken by Danish photographer Andreas Hvid, who did scale the Great Pyramid of Giza outside of Cairo, Egypt in November with a model. He took a video of their stunt, blurring out the model’s face. The video ends with the anonymous woman taking off her top. Other photos show the two posing as if they were having sex.

The images and video immediately sparked outrage. People pointed out that not only is the stunt immensely disrespectful—it’s illegal. As Newsweek reports, Egypt’s antiquities minister Khaled al-Anani said scaling the pyramids is “strictly forbidden,” and the images from Hvid were a “violation of public morality.”

The footage is still being investigated for its authenticity, but Hvid admitted the photo of him having sex on the pyramid isn’t real. They were, per the Guardian, just posing.

Why someone would illegally scale a 460-foot, 4,500-year-old national treasure to pretend to have sex is the most puzzling part of the whole ordeal, and Hvid provided little insight on that aside from describing the “euphoric” feeling he had on top of the pyramid. “We did not have sex and we never had it,” he said.

In response to the video and photos on both Instagram and Facebook, locals are asking the government to ban tourists, and people from across the globe expressed rage toward Hvid’s stunt.

The Danish photographer told tabloid Ekstrabladet he’d been dreaming of climbing the giant structure “for many years,” but was saddened by the negative reaction. “I’m sad that so many people have become so angry,” he said, cluelessly. “But I have also received a positive response from a lot of Egyptians—something I think is worth remembering.”

So far, Hvid and the model have not face any consequences for the stunt, as authorities continue to investigate.

They deserve to face ALL the consequences.

Support Groups Aid People Impacted by Shooting and Fire Tragedies

Beginning this week for 8 weeks, Kaiser Permanente is offering free crisis support groups to communities impacted by the Borderline Bar and Grill mass shooting and the devastating Woolsey wildfire. Licensed mental health professionals will lead the sessions, which will be held in the California cities of Thousand Oaks, Ventura, and Woodland Hills.

The shocking Borderline shooting occurred on November 7 in Thousand Oaks, killing 13 people, including the suspect. The next day, the destructive Woolsey fire ignited near Simi Valley, eventually spreading through parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties. From loss of loved ones to ravaged homes, those affected are trying to put the pieces of their lives back together in the aftermath of these tragic events.

“These communities are dealing with multiple layers of tragedy — there has been an onslaught of trauma, destruction and grief” said Anna Garcia, PsyD, a licensed marriage and family therapist and the director of Behavioral Health at Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center. “Many people in the Ventura area are also still dealing with the effects of last year’s Thomas fire. These events strike at the very core of people’s sense of safety and equilibrium.”

The weekly support groups focus on teaching participants self-care skills to help them recover from trauma, work through their grief, and begin moving forward in their lives. Attendees also receive assistance connecting them to other resources and services.

“We can’t control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond — how we can use negative experiences to make us stronger and more resilient,” said Garcia. “Providing a place for people to come together and share their feelings helps them process what happened.”

Helping People, and the Planet: Nordstrom Partners with Operation Warm

MORE THAN A COAT: This year, Nordstrom employees join a list of other retail partners, such as Abercrombie & Fitch Co., Hollister Co. and TJX Cos. Inc. in volunteering their time in partnership with Operation Warm to provide coats to children in need — and also help the planet.
Marking 20 years in helping the unfortunate, Operation Warm is on track to achieve three million coats distributed with the aid of corporate partnerships and the corporate employee volunteer program, which is in its third year. Other avenues of assistance come directly through community groups, firefighters and schools for where the help is most needed.
Through its inaugural partnership with Nordstrom, “the green guardian” coat gives back. Each coat is designed and manufactured by Operation Warm and made out of 32 recycled plastic bottles.
Mutually excited in their partnership, Nordstrom and Operation Warm believe the mission is in line with company core values as well as demonstrated need.
As the holidays warrant a pleasure in giving, “This holiday season, Nordstrom is excited to be partnering with Operation Warm to outfit 1,500 children in New York City with new winter coats,” said Chris Wanlass, vice president and general manager of Nordstrom Manhattan.

The Black Travel Box Provides Travel Size Hair and Skin Products for People of Color

While away on a vacation, one of the last things you want to deal with is an exhaustive search for products to fix a bad hair day. So when Orion Brown found herself in Japan “dealing with a major miscalculation of weather and a head full of hair with no hope,” she turned her annoyance into opportunity.

“I didn’t have enough product to get me through the trip and there was nowhere locally I could find the products I needed,” said Brown. “Dejected, I avoided the selfies and made the best of it. But upon reflection, I could only hope that someone would make (or would have made) a product company for travelers like me. There weren’t. So I created The Black Travel Box.”

The Black Travel Box provides travel size hair and skin products for people of color delivered to your door when you want. The product line includes a conditioner bar, hair balm, body balm, and lip balm.

“They say that necessity is the mother of invention,” said Brown. “Well, there’s no greater necessity for me than the “necessities” of travel when on vacation. We’re not a typical subscription box company. Our ‘subscribe and save’ model is similar to Amazon’s, where customers can choose products they know and trust, and then select a personalized schedule for receiving them right to their door. Subscribing is optional, but offers savings over one-time purchases, its flexible, and it can be canceled anytime.”

With a background in consumer goods marketing and brand management, Brown leveraged her lessons learned, while working in corporate to build her business model and test the market for the products and service before launching it.

The Black Travel Box could not be where it is today without that working experience,” said Brown. “While I’m still learning the ropes of entrepreneurship, the corporate experience of building and maintaining brands is exceptionally relevant here, particularly as we come into a personal care space that is both vast and nonexistent.”

For instance, according to a Nielsen study, “African Americans have cornered the ethnic hair and beauty market, ringing up $ 54 million of the $ 63 million total industry spent in 2017. Black shoppers spent $ 473 million in total hair care (a $ 4.2 billion industry) and made other significant investments in personal appearance products, such as grooming aids ($ 127 million out of $ 889 million) and skin care preparations ($ 465 million out of $ 3 billion).”  Plus, according to data from Mandala Research, black Americans spend $ 48 billion each year traveling and are among the fastest growing segments in the U.S., with 68% surveyed wanting to learn more about their history and culture through travel.

Travelers of color who want to look and feel their best when traveling abroad are the primary consumers of the Black Travel Box.

“They take photos, selfies, and love to share their experiences,” said Brown. “They are avid social media consumers and content makers. While they travel far and fairly often, the challenge of easily getting their look “just right” hasn’t yet been met. They compromise on the products that they bring along, spending time filling travel sized bottles with their favorite products, purchasing “basic” skin and hair care ingredients abroad, or struggling to make what’s available to them work for their unique needs.”

Perhaps the biggest appeal of the Black Travel Box is the sense of community it provides for black travelers.

“I started The Black Travel Box to give women of color a brand they could trust for all their travel personal care needs,” said Brown. “Globally, Black travelers have few if any places they can go to find personal care products that work for their hair and skincare needs. As the culture of international travel continues to grow in our community – more and more of us are exploring the world with a level of freedom and wanderlust that our parents and grandparents could never dream of. Our brand is here to help these millennial explorers travel in confidence (we call it #TravelInColor) knowing they have the products to put their best foot forward and rock those selfies in Croatia, London, China… or where ever their travels may take them.”

Mindy Kaling says people have trouble with “women who don’t hate themselves,” and it’s a sad truth

Mindy Kaling says people have trouble with “women who don’t hate themselves,” and it’s a sad truth

There’s no denying that Mindy Kaling is goals—she’s a show runner, actress, and best-selling author, and she seems to genuinely love the skin she’s in. Which—as she noted in a recent speech—isn’t always easy, or even encouraged, among women. During Glamour’s 2018 Women of the Year Summit on November 11th, the Mindy Project star noted that some people are “turned off” by her confidence.

“It’s not that I’m into myself,” she said. “It’s that I don’t hate myself. In my career, a lot of people have a problem with being around women who don’t hate themselves. Never hate yourself.”

We are so here for Kaling’s observation. Women are still socialized to downplay their accomplishments, to apologize before contributing in meetings, and to generally take up as little space in a room or situation as possible. And when they don’t? They’re hit with labels like “conceited,” “arrogant,” and, yes, “bitchy.” And it has got to stop.

Kaling’s advice for women looking to build their confidence and make their dreams come true is to always feel prepared. “I always just did the legwork, and it meant I never came to anything unprepared. The only reason I was able to be confident was because I literally couldn’t not be confident with the amount of research and preparation I did.”

Thank you for your wisdom, Mindy. We’re taking note.

Say What Now? Sinéad O’Connor Says She Never Wants to Spend Time with White People Again: ‘The Are Disgusting’

Sinéad O’Connor has been going by the name Shuhada Davitt since converting to Islam and now the 51-year-old singer says she doesn’t want to come in contact with anyone who doesn’t share her beliefs — specifically, ‘white people.’

via People:

Last month, she confirmed on Twitter her conversion to Islam, explaining that her new faith “is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey.”

“All scripture leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant,” the Grammy winner added, before revealing she would henceforth be known by a new name. “I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada.’”

In addition to changing her name on her Twitter page, she also replaced her profile picture with a photo that reads “Wear a hijab just do it” alongside the Nike swoosh logo. Additionally, her Twitter bio now reads, “PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IF YOU POST RACIST OR ANTI MUSLIM RHETORIC ON THIS PAGE YOU WILL BE BLOCKED.”

The day after revealing her big news, O’Connor shared that she had been given her first hijab, writing that she wouldn’t be posting a photo because it’s “intensely personal,” before humorously adding that there was a second reason for her decision.

“I’m an ugly old hag,” she wrote. “But I’m a very, very, very happy old hag.”

Over the next couple of days, the Irish singer went on to share a number of photos of herself wearing a head covering, simply writing that she was “happy.”

O’Connor was ordained as a priest in 1999 in a dissident Roman Catholic group.

She has previously spoken out against the abuses of the Catholic Church, even ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a Saturday Night Live appearance in 1992.

The singer has struggled with her mental health in recent years, yet said she was open about her issues in the hopes that it would inspire others sufferingto seek help.
