Ariana Grande, Kanye West Feud Over Mental Health Turns Serious as Pete Davidson Posts Concerning Message

A Twitter spat between Ariana Grande and Kanye West over mental health took a serious turn on Saturday after Pete Davidson, an SNL star and Grande’s ex-fiance, posted a message on social media that some took as suicidal.

The tiff between the two musicians began when Grande waded into a feud between West and the music star Drake yesterday.

Drake and West and have notoriously had a contentious relationship since at least 2011, according to ELLE. Their feud was apparently reignited in September, when Drake made a snide reference to the sneakers West designs in a song. Then on December 13, Drake requested sampling a portion of Kanye’s song in one of his compositions. Soon afterward, Kanye launched into a Twitter rant that lasted more than 100 tweets.

Grande responded to the very public dispute with a teasing tweet of her own.

“Guys, I know there are grown men arguing online rn but miley and I dropping our beautiful, new songs tonight so if y’all could please jus behave for just like a few hours so the girls can shine that’d be sick thank u,” Grande wrote on Twitter, which she later deleted.

West did not take kindly to Grande’s intrusion and suggested that she was inserting herself into the beef to promote her new song, “Imagine,” which released Friday.

Grande then apologized for being insensitive about West’s mental health, but fired back at him for suggesting she was promoting herself.

“With all due respect, I don’t need to use anyone to promote anything. period. I was making a comment ab what men were doing at the time v.s. women. It was a joke which I understand now was probably insensitive. I apologize if I was in any way triggering and I hope u feel well today,” Grande tweeted. She later deleted her tweet.

This morning, Davidson appeared to side with West in an Instagram post.

“Bravo Kanye West for standing up for yourself and speaking out against [sic] mental health,” his post read. “I can’t explain to you enough how difficult and scary it is to be honest about stuff like this. We need people like Kanye. No one should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health. I’m seriously disgusted.”

A few hours later, however, Davidson published another message that struck an even more serious tone.

“I really don’t want to be on this earth anymore. I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last,” Davidson wrote.

Davidson, who has spoken out frequently about having bipolar disorder and suicidal tendencies, appeared to suggest that he was feeling suicidal. Soon afterward, he deleted both messages.

Earlier this month, Davidson wrote on Instagram:

“I’ve been getting online bullied and in public by people for 9 months. I’ve spoken about BPD and being suicidal publicly only in the hopes that it will help bring awareness and help kids like myself who don’t want to be on this earth,” he wrote. “No matter how hard the internet or anyone tries to make me kill myself. I won’t. I’m upset I even have to say this.”

In since-deleted tweets, Grande apologized for being insensitive about mental health issues.

“Man I’m so sorry I told a dumb joke. I really didn’t mean any harm. All I want everyone to be healthy and happy. so desperately,” she tweeted.

Soon afterwards, she tweeted seemingly at Davidson: “I’m downstairs and I’m not going anywhere if you need anyone or anything. I know u have everyone u need and that’s not me, but I’m here too.”

TMZ reported that she had made her way to 30 Rock in Manhattan, where SNL is filmed, in order to try and see Davidson.

Davidson was accounted for at SNL and “fine,” according to the New York Times.

‘I’m Upset I Even Have to Say This.’ Pete Davidson Addresses Struggle With Borderline Personality Disorder

Pete Davidson has publicly addressed his struggle with borderline personality disorder as well as the bullying he says he has endured because of the mental illness.

The Saturday Night Live cast member, who has recently come under public scrutiny for both his breakup with Ariana Grande and a skit on SNL in which he made a controversial joke about a GOP congressional candidate who lost an eye while serving in Afghanistan, took to Instagram on Monday to share a Notes screenshot in which he spoke out against the way he has been treated by those critical of his behavior. Davidson was diagnosed with BPD in 2017.

The full post read as follows:

I’ve kept my mouth shut. Never mentioned any names, never said a word about anyone or anything. I’m trying to understand how when something happens to a guy the whole entire world just trashes him without any facts or frame of reference. Especially in today’s climate where everyone loves to be offended and upset it truly is mind boggling. I’ve been getting online bullied and in public by people for 9 months. I’ve spoken about BPD and being suicidal publicly only in the hopes that it will help bring awareness and help kids like myself who don’t want to be on this earth. I just want you guys to know. No matter how hard the internet or anyone tries to make me kill myself. I won’t. I’m upset I even have to say this. To all those holding me down and seeing this for what it is – I see you and I love you.

Davidson has previously spoken about his mental health struggles both on SNL and in interviews. “I’ve been having a lot of problems,” he told Marc Maron on the WTF podcast in September 2017. “This whole year has been a f—ing nightmare. This has been the worst year of my life, getting diagnosed with this and trying to figure out how to learn with this and live with this.”

‘Saturday Night Live’: Pete Davidson Apologizes to Lt. Com. Dan Crenshaw — And Gets Roasted

In a rare conciliatory moment from the usually-irreverent Saturday Night Live, Pete Davidson apologized to Lt. Com. Dan Crenshaw on Weekend Update on Saturday.

Sitting next to Crenshaw, Davidson expressed regret for a widely-criticized joke he made last week about the former Navy SEAL and newly elected Republican House Representative.

“I mean this from the bottom of my heart,” Davidson said. “It was a poor choice of words. The man is a war hero and he deserves all the respect in the world.”

Last week on SNL’s Weekend Update, Davidson had mocked Crenshaw’s eyepatch, which he wears due to an injury he sustained in an I.E.D. explosion while serving in Afghanistan.

“You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate from Texas, and not a hitman in a porno movie,” Davidson said of Crenshaw.

He then added, “I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war or whatever. Whatever.”

Earlier in the week, Crenshaw did not seem too interested in an apology from Davidson or Saturday Night Live.

“They certainly crossed the line, but their apology won’t mean anything to me,” Crenshaw said on Fox & Friends Monday. “I think what they should do is maybe pull their money together and donate to some veterans charities out there who could really use some help.”

As well as appearing on the show last night, Crenshaw delivered a serious note on respect for veterans and national unity.

“We can remember what brings us together as a country and still see the good in each other,” Crenshaw said. “This is Veterans’ Day weekend, which means that it’s a good time for every American to connect with a veteran.”

He also got to offer a few barbs of his own against Davidson.

“He looks like a troll doll with a tapeworm,” Crenshaw said.

Pete Davidson Chokes Up Discussing Ariana Grande Breakup on SNL: ‘She’s a Wonderful, Strong Person’

NBC

Just thirty minutes prior to Saturday Night Live, Ariana Grande released a new song about her exes—including SNL’s very own Pete Davidson.

The song, called “Thank U, Next,” saw Grande sing, “And for Pete, I’m so thankful,” and contains a chorus that goes, “Thank u, next / I’m so fuckin’ grateful for my ex.” Its title is a reference to a tweet Grande fired off (and subsequently deleted) after taking issue with Davidson poking fun at their engagement in an SNL promo.

And on SNL’s “Weekend Update,” co-hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che welcomed Davidson on to roast some of the midterm election candidates.

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson Are No Longer Engaged

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson have ended their relationship, four months after the couple announced their engagement.

“It was way too much too soon,” People reports, citing a source for the pop star who said, “It’s not shocking to anyone.”

The 25-year-old pop star and the 24-year-old Saturday Night Live cast member first announced they were a couple in May, and shared their engagement weeks later in June. While they were together, they dedicated warm shout-outs to each other in their work.

Grande had titled a track on her new chart-dominating album Sweetener after Davidson himself, “Pete Davidson,” and the pair made their red carpet debut at the VMAs in August.

After Grande’s ex-boyfriend Mac Miller’s died on Sept. 7, Grande took some time to regroup, according to a statement released by her team in September.

“Given the events of the past couple of years, Ariana is going to take some much needed time to heal and mend,” the statement read. “She will be staying close to home and using this period to spend time with her loved ones and work on new music without deadline.”

Recently, though Grande canceled her performance on Saturday Night Live’s premiere episode on Sept. 26th, she did join him at 30 Rock when the episode was being filmed. During a Weekend Update segment, Davidson delivered a monologue about living with Grande.

Spokespeople for Grande and Davidson did not immediately respond to TIME’s request for comment.

SNL’s Pete Davidson Slams Kanye West For Pro-Trump Rant [Video]

Last week, Kanye West delivered a pro-Trump speech on SNL, and on Saturday night, the show responded via Pete Davidson, who clowned the rapper’s off-air MAGA rant at the end of the “Weekend Update” segment.

“So many times I talk to a white person and [they] say, ‘How could you like Trump, he’s racist?’ Well, if I was concerned about racism I would’ve moved out of America a long time ago,” West told the Saturday Night Live audience. He also pledged to run for president in 2020.

Pete encouraged West to take his meds — “Davidson admitted that he’s on medication as well — and capped off the segment by donning a “Make Kanye 2006 Again” hat,” Page Six writes.

On Saturday, Davidson called West’s speech “one of the worst, most awkward things I’ve ever seen here. We all had to stand behind him,” he continued as video of the speech played, “I’m on the left [his head is down in the video], and then I’m like, ‘I want a career,’ so I leave” the stage.

He also addressed West’s claim that “they” tried to “bully” him out of wearing the MAGA hat.

“So Kanye was wearing a ‘MAGA’ hat, and he started by saying people backstage tried to bully him into not wearing it,” Davidson said. “He wore it all week. Nobody told him not to wear it — I wish would have suggested that it might upset some people, like your wife, or, like, every black person, ever.”

“Kanye is a genius,” he continued, “but a musical genius, like Joey Chestnut is a hot-dog eating genius. I don’t want to hear Joey Chestnut’s opinions about things that aren’t hot dog related!”

Davidson then asked West to resume taking his medication.

“Kanye, I know you’re like, ‘Yo, this is the real me, I’m off the meds’,” which West has said on at least two occasions. “Take ‘em! There’s no shame in the medicine game! I’m on ‘em — take ‘em! if I ever got on a plane and the pilot said, ‘I just want you all to know this is the real me flying,’” I’d jump out!

“Being mentally ill is not an excuse to act like a jackass,” he concluded. “Seriously: one time I stopped taking my meds, and I bit my mom. But it’s all good because I bought her a house.”

He finished by putting on a “Make Kanye 2006 Again” hat… watch the clip above.
