Vaporize all the invisible grime on your phone in minutes with this must-have gadget

Best Way To Clean An iPhone

If you really knew how much bacteria and other nastiness was on the surface of your smartphone right now, there’s a very good chance that you’d vomit. If not, you’d at least dry heave for a while. Our smartphones are absolutely disgusting and then we go ahead and smear that stuff all over our faces when we talk on the phone. Do yourself a favor. Get a PhoneSoap 3 UV Cell Phone Sanitizer and use it once or twice a week. It uses UV light to vaporize all the bacteria and other gross stuff lurking on the surface of your phone, and it automatically shuts off when it’s done. It can even charge your phone, so you can just drop in your phone each night when you go to sleep.

The best travel apps you need on your phone

Before the dawn of the smartphone if you wanted to travel to a different country you’d have to buy yourself a phrase book and then a map or two to help you find your way when you inevitably got lost. Nowadays all of that travel information is right on hand in your pocket, you just need to know what apps to have on your phone to make sure you can travel with ease. We’re looking at the essential travel apps to download to your phone, just make sure you bring your passport along for the trip too!

Google Translate

If you’re visiting a country that speaks a different language, it might be hard getting around and understanding what’s going on. With Google Translate you can download the entire dictionary for offline use in the language of the country you are visiting, having it on hand to translate anything you read. There is an added feature that will really come in handy for people who use this app. If you point your phone at some foreign text, Google Translate will magically convert it to your mother tongue, meaning you can easily understand what’s on the menu without having to type it all into the app.

Uber

Chances are, if you are visiting a new place you aren’t going to have your car with you. You ’ll still need to find your way around this new place though and possibly the best way to do that is through Uber. If you don’t know what Uber is, it is a mobile taxi service that essentially summons a driver to your location through your phone, and they’ll take you where you want to go. It can often be cheaper than regular taxi services, and you’ll be able to get picked up within minutes, meaning you won’t be stranded in a strange and scary place trying to find your way back to your hotel.

Citymapper

If you don’t want to solely rely on taxis getting you around, then try out the Citymapper app. It is designed with commuting in mind, so it can offer you the best routes to and from anywhere in the city you are staying in. You can even download the maps to make it available offline, helping avoid the expensive data roaming charges many service providers like to extort from us when we visit other countries.

Duolingo

If you want to try and fit in with the locals, or at least not stand out too much, you might want to try leaning some of the local lingo. Duolingo is a language learning app that’ll have you comprehending the basics in no time. It is broken up into small chunks, meaning you won’t be overwhelmed with new words right from the off. The app makes a game of the learning experience, making you come back for more and more until you’re a pro at your new language. It comes with a wide range of languages, all of the most common in the world as well as plenty of lesser-spoken languages.

These apps can help to take away the stress of visiting a new country where you are unfamiliar with the language and how to get around. You can simply refer to the apps on your phone to make sure you never misorder a dish from the menu or get lost in a foreign land again.

Feeling Lucky? This Single Dad Won $5K Playing Games on His Phone

When he got a phone call saying he’d won $ 5,000, Oneil Campbell immediately assumed it was a scam.

“At first, I was going to do what I usually do — hang up the phone,” Campbell says. “You always get these calls saying, ‘Oh, you’ve won a $ 5 million lotto, but you’ve got to send us a check for $ 1,000 first.’”

But he stayed on the phone just long enough to hear the caller mention an important word: “Lucktastic.”

Campbell stayed on the line. He frequently plays Lucktastic, a free app that generates virtual scratch-off tickets with real prizes. You can also play games and enter contests on the app.

Campbell had entered a Monopoly Boardwalk contest on the app — the $ 5,000 he won was no scam, after all.

The Lucktastic representative who called Campbell about his prize suggested that, to satisfy his doubts, Campbell could go to the Lucktastic app and contact customer support to find out if this was for real or not.

It was for real. Five grand in prize money.

“I didn’t see that one coming,” Campbell says with a laugh. “I really didn’t.”

But it was a welcome surprise.

“This is something good that happened to me at the right time — when I can really use it.”

A Home for His Daughter

A father and his young daughter look at plants in the yard of a house.
Campbell and his daughter Annika explore a butterfly garden on a property that he is buying with the help of $ 5,000 he won playing Lucktastic. Katherine Taylor for The Penny Hoarder

A 42-year-old native of Jamaica who now lives in Boston, Campbell knows exactly how he’ll spend his Lucktastic winnings.

It’s a big chunk of the down payment he’s going to use to buy a home for himself and his beloved 5-year-old daughter, Annika. He’s not sure yet how much he’ll need, but $ 5,000 will help him get there.

Campbell works in maintenance for a property management company. He spends his workdays fixing things that break in apartment buildings. He’s been trying to save money to buy a home, but it’s tough in the super-expensive Boston real estate market.

“Right now, I’m basically renting a room in a home,” he said. “I’m a single dad, and I have my daughter with me most of the time. She’s getting older. She needs more room — and I need more room.”

He’s looking at homes in the city of Worcester (which Bostonians pronounce “Wooster”), an hour’s commute from his job. “I can’t come up with $ 600,000 to buy a house in Boston,” he explained.

‘I Could Play It When I Was Relaxing on My Break’

A man plays a game on his mobile phone.
Campbell plays Lucktastic, a free app that generates virtual scratch-off tickets with real prizes, on his mobile phone. Katherine Taylor for The Penny Hoarder

Campbell first got into Lucktastic in early 2018. He had always liked entering contests and sweepstakes.

“I used to do that religiously,” he said. “But when life gets busy, you don’t have a lot of time to do these things.”

Lucktastic was easier. “I liked the fact that it was on my phone. I could play it when I was relaxing on my break, or whatever.”

The app offers free digital scratch-off cards. You scratch off the cards by holding your finger to the screen and swiping back and forth. Plus, there are a variety of contests, which are basically raffles where you’re entered to win a prize.

Lucktastic says you can win up to $ 10,000. It boasts 1 million winners who have taken home a collective $ 3 million to date.

Feeling Lucky?

A father holds his young daughter.
Campbell and his daughter in the backyard of the house he is buying in Worcester, Mass. His unexpected $ 5,000 win from Lucktastic is a huge step toward getting himself and his daughter out of his single rented room in Boston. Katherine Taylor for The Penny Hoarder

Of course, with anything that has to do with luck, remain realistic about the odds.

“For the instant win scratch-cards, the odds of winning depend upon the number of people playing the cards,” Lucktastic answers in its FAQ section. “For contests, the odds of winning depend upon the number of entries received.”

At the Better Business Bureau, the app gets some negative customer reviews from folks who complain about not making money. However, the company that operates Lucktastic, Jump Ramp Games, boasts an A rating from the BBB.

Several of us here at The Penny Hoarder have played Lucktastic and have walked away with $ 1 and some tokens, which you can use to enter contests.

Bottom line: You never know whether you’re going to get lucky.

As for Campbell, his unexpected $ 5,000 win is a huge step toward getting himself and his daughter out of his single rented room and into that house in Worcester.

“I’m working very hard to see if I can get a house so my little girl can have her own space,” he says.

Oh yeah, and he still plays Lucktastic.

“You know I’m hooked on this [app] now, right?” he says with another laugh. “I’m constantly on the [app].

His reason is simple: “Everyone likes to win free stuff. It could happen for you, too.”

Mike Brassfield (mike@thepennyhoarder.com) is a senior writer at The Penny Hoarder. He’s lucky.

This was originally published on The Penny Hoarder, which helps millions of readers worldwide earn and save money by sharing unique job opportunities, personal stories, freebies and more. The Inc. 5000 ranked The Penny Hoarder as the fastest-growing private media company in the U.S. in 2017.

Author Kelly Oxford, Who Started #NotOkay, Claims Her Ex-Husband Once Threw a Phone at Her Head

Kelly Oxford is opening up about the possible reason she and ex-husband divorced.

The New York Times bestselling author, 41, claimed her ex-husband James Oxford was allegedly abusive in a series of Instagram Story photos on Monday.

The mother of three divorced from James in 2016 after 17 years of marriage. That same year, Oxford started the #notokay hashtag on Twitter after a 2005 video conversation between Donald Trump and Billy Bush emerged in which the now-president how he liked to grab women by their genitals.

Women shared their stories of sexual abuse and sexual harassment on Twitter with #notokay. Now, Oxford is now explaining her own #notokay moment, beginning with what ended her marriage with a simple caption explaining that she was writing alone.

“Some days I just put on a ton of makeup and write alone all day,” she wrote. She continued, writing, “I’ve been threatened and scared to write about the marriage I was in, but I’m over it.”

“Abuse is hard to talk about. Especially when you’re the only one who sees it. It feels like a ghost,” Oxford explained.

“Don’t marry someone who throws a phone at your head, I did and I became a terrible person,” she continued, before adding, “I’M BETTER NOW.”

James Oxford did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The two married in 2007 and share three children together.

The screenwriter of Sausage Party has been open about being divorced and raising three children as a single parent.

In March, Oxford shared a selfie of herself on vacation while delving into her struggle with her ex-husband not being there.

“Oh hey, it’s me again. This is my first vacation with the kids and no dad and there have been waves of total depression and waves of total gratitude,” she wrote in the caption.

“Right now, I’m feeling shitty; I’m sharing because I know a lot of you are single parents and get it and don’t want to feel alone either,” Oxford continued.

“Anyhow, I just woke up, came to the beach and had a coffee alone (alone, not so shockingly, is hard after having a partner for 17 years) and wanted a cigarette, after nearly 4 months of quitting, but didn’t smoke,” she added.

How to send spam calls straight to voicemail with Google’s phone app

TwitterFacebook

Google just gave us another good reason to use its phone app: better protection from spam callers.

The company’s phone app for Android has a new setting that can automatically detect spam calls and send them straight to voicemail so your phone never even rings.

The app now has a “filter suspected spam call” option in its settings. When enabled, suspected spam calls will be routed straight to your phone’s voicemail. Your phone won’t ring, and you won’t get a missed call notification.

If the caller does leave a voicemail, you also won’t get a notification, though you’ll have the ability to view missed calls and voicemails that have been “filtered.” Read more…

The FCC has officially banned phone companies’ worst trick

Slamming and Cramming phone bills

The Federal Communications Commission has voted through new rules that ban unauthorized charges on phone bills. In case you’re thinking “wait, that was legal before?!” it was already illegal under federal law, but adding explicit rules to ban particular practices makes it faster and easier to enforce the law.

The FCC targeted two particularly nasty tactics employed by salespeople and telecoms, known as “slamming” and “cramming.” Cramming is a technique that’s rampant across a telecoms industry where salespeople often have commission as a significant part of their income. It refers to any time salespeople add charges to your bill without your explicit authorization, or by promising that credits will eventually show up when they don’t. We’ve reported before how such tactics can be institutionalized, especially in franchise-owned locations where salespeople aren’t even employed by the company whose services they’re selling.

Good lord, Android phone makers, please just stop

LG G7 Release Date

Seriously, LG, this is just embarrassing. We know small China-based smartphone makers are busy churning out iPhone X copycats as quickly as they can (or should we say Essential PH-1 copycats, as some crazy Android fanboys would have you believe). We also know that some larger China- and Taiwan-based companies are jumping on the copycat bandwagon. Huawei’s upcoming P20 flagship phone features a notch cut out of the top of the display as well as a vertically oriented camera array on the back, and the Asus Zenfone 5 is also a spitting image of Apple’s tenth-anniversary iPhone.

But now, if a new report out of South Korea is accurate, LG reportedly plans to move forward and release its iPhone X clone that some people thought had been canceled.

Samsung’s screen-carrying drone will save you from ever holding your phone

Samsung Display Drone

Wouldn’t it be cool to be able to control a drone with your eyes or voice? Samsung, apparently, is considering the creation of such flying devices, which would be able to interpret your gestures, but also eye movements, and voice commands.

It may be a while until we see such devices in stores if that ever happens. A more grim possibility for the technology is advertising, the kind of ad experiences that follows you around in stores or on the street. What’s certain is that Samsung is studying pairing displays with drone technology.

Phone Apps and Resources for People with Hearing Loss

Hearing is one of the senses that can decline with age. About 15 percent of American adults over 18 report some trouble hearing, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), with age being the strongest predictor – particularly among adults aged 20-69. The good news for women is that men are almost twice as likely to have hearing loss.

Whether you’re experiencing hearing loss now or might later, here’s a list of suggested apps and resources to make your life easier:

Apps

Ava – If you’re having trouble following conversations, try this app, which provides real-time captioning. The service is free up to five hours a month, otherwise there are unlimited plans for a fee.

InnoCaption – If you can’t use your smartphone as an actual phone because understanding speech is difficult, InnoCaption is the answer. The service uses live stenographers to caption phone calls whether you’re making or receiving them. It will even caption your voice mail.

SoundAlert – This app converts environmental sounds into visual and sensory notifications and alerts that you can customize.

Soundhound – Not only can this app identify the music that’s playing, but it’ll show the lyrics in real-time. A search function is also included.

Speech Banana – provides auditory training for adults learning to hear with a cochlear implant or digital hearing aid.

Resources

Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing – AG Bell is a non-profit organization dedicated to listening and spoken language. If your child is diagnosed with a hearing loss, this is where to start.

Association of Late-Deafened Adults – As ALDA’s mission states, “late-deafened adults are people who have lost the ability to understand speech with or without hearing aids after acquiring spoken language.” ALDA provides a support network with regions and chapters.

American Cochlear Implant Alliance – ACIA is a non-profit organization that supports cochlear implants. Since there are several manufacturers, this is a good place to start if you want to learn more.

American Speech-Language-Hearing Association – ASHA provides a good overview of hearing aids, along with links to find an ASHA-certified audiologist.

CaptionCall – This captioned telephone with an easy-to-read screen is available free to people who qualify. To do so, all that’s required is an Internet connection and a professional certification form from a professional who can verify your hearing loss. Phone features include amplification and customizable audio settings.

CaptionFish – This site is an easy way to look up the captioned movies showing near you. There are even captioned trailers to view.

Harris Communications – Looking for assistive technologies like a flashing fire alarm or vibrating alarm clock? This site has it all.

Hearing Loss Association of America – Organization representing people with hearing loss. Check out HLAA’s resources, chapters, and even its annual convention.

Arianna Huffington Adds a Do-Not-Disturb Sign to Your Samsung Phone

There is nothing radical about most digital media or technology–at least in the sense that it doesn’t make us do things we wouldn’t ordinarily do. It just helps us do them better.

Facebook didn’t invent making friends. It just does a good job–or, rather a comprehensive one–of letting friends (and bare acquaintances) keep track of one another’s lives, thoughts, and high school crushes. Twitter didn’t invent news or gossip or puppy videos. It just spreads them faster. Airbnb didn’t invent sleepovers. It just helps us have them at strangers’ homes instead.

And Thrive Global, the wellness-crusading company that new media czarina Arianna Huffington founded nearly a year ago, didn’t invent downtime. But a new app the startup has created makes that precious commodity much easier to secure.

The app, with the eponymous name of “Thrive,” was designed for all Samsung devices and will be available for download, starting in December, exclusively through the Samsung Galaxy Store–an announcement Huffington made onstage today in front of a sold-out crowd attending the Samsung Developer Conference at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

So what does this app do? It helps you turn off your phone. Now, if that sounds minor, just ask yourself this: “When was the last time you did it?”

The Thrive app has several “modes” to help you disconnect in different ways. Switch into “Thrive Mode,” for instance, and your phone will thoughtfully lock you out for whatever amount of time you choose–squelching notifications, text messages and phone calls, except from the loved ones you preselect to be on your “VIP list.”

If you want, you can end your nirvana session early–that is, unless you opt for “Super Thrive Mode.” Here, there’s no going back. Essential for true work addicts who don’t trust themselves to turn off, even for a few minutes. There’s a scheduler, too, where you can set up regular daily or weekly bouts of quiet time. (The whole thing is rather elegantly designed, I might add, in a soothing moon glow sort of way.)

Among Thrive’s scariest modes, though, is its “App Control” setting, which reveals how much time you actually spend on Instagram, Twitter, or “Clash of Clans.” And, yes, Thrive lets you set time limits here as well–or block some games or social media drugs altogether.

Huffington has been on a holy war to end our aching emotional, physical, and spiritual burnout. “And one of the big accelerators of burnout is our addiction to our cellphones,” Huffington told me in a recent interview at Fortune‘s Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, D.C. “We need to address that. Because the truth is your day, my day, most people’s day never ends. You have to declare an artificial end of the day and the symbol of that is turning off your phone.”

And given how addicting our personal, always accessible technoceuticals are, that ain’t easy.

Tristan Harris, the former Google “Design Ethicist” who once worked as a magician, wrote a compelling essay last year on “How Technology is Hijacking Your Mind…” He argues that our phones, social media, and games use a psychological lure called intermittent variable rewards. He writes:

“If you want to maximize addictiveness, all tech designers need to do is link a user’s action (like pulling a lever) with a variable reward. You pull a lever and immediately receive either an enticing reward (a match, a prize!) or nothing. Addictiveness is maximized when the rate of reward is most variable.”

“That’s why we need to set boundaries,” says Huffington. “The Thrive app is designed to help us monitor our addiction.”

We can do that by descending into silos, perhaps. Internally, in fact, Huffington and her team called the app “silo” for a while, she says, but the word has negative implications.

“We had lots of back-and-forths on whether the app should be the same name as the company,” Marc Mathieu, the chief marketing officer of Samsung Electronics, tells me in an interview. “But what Arianna has developed is not just a trick–it’s a philosophy, it’s a point of view, it’s a platform.” And “Thrive” is what that philosophy-pov-platform is. (For more on that, see “Dream Catcher,” the story I wrote on the day of Thrive Global’s launch last November.)

Indeed, as I think of it, there is something “radical” about Thrive. That’s because it does, in my view, have the power to get us to do something we wouldn’t ordinarily do–and that’s brag about resting.

As Huffington says, so many of us in the modern age seem to compete to see who can keep their engines revved the hottest, longest, and most intensely.

That’s why my favorite setting in the Thrive app is what the programmers modestly call “Bi-directional Communication.” That option tells anyone and everyone who texts or calls you that you’re busy unplugging.

It’s a subtle message, yes. But with those few words repeated millions of times, Huffington hopes to foment a revolution. God bless her.

Live Phone Calls Better Than Text Messages and Letters to Remind People About Colon Cancer Screening

PORTLAND, Ore. — Live phone calls significantly outperform text messages and letters as a way to remind patients to complete and return at-home screening tests for colon cancer, according to new research in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

The study included more than 2,700 patients who receive care in safety-net clinics and who were overdue for colon cancer screening. Colon cancer screening is recommended for everyone ages 50-75.

The patients were sent test kits by mail, and 10 percent mailed back their completed tests within three weeks. Those who did not return the kits within that period were assigned to one of seven reminder interventions. These included a phone call from a clinic outreach worker (live call), two automated calls, two text messages, a single reminder letter, or a combination of these strategies.

The live phone call intervention was most effective, resulting in 32 percent of patients in this group completing and returning their test kit within six months. The text message intervention was the least effective — only 17 percent of patients in this group completed and mailed back their test.

“We knew that these patients are not as text savvy as younger patients, but we didn’t expect text messaging to do so poorly, compared to the other strategies,” said Gloria Coronado, PhD, lead author and cancer disparities researcher with the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research. “Text messaging is a relatively inexpensive way to send patient reminders, but for this group it was also relatively ineffective.”

Patients received the various reminders in their preferred language. Phone calls were the most effective strategy for all patients, but English speakers were more likely to resond to live phone calls, while Spanish speakers were more likely to respond to the combination of a live call and two automated calls.

People assigned to receive the live call and the automated calls had more contacts with the health care system. It appears that Spanish speakers appreciated this additional contact, while English speakers may have been more likely to disregard the additional automated calls, said Coronado.

“The phone calls may help to build trust or confianza, which is an important value and motivator for care-seeking among Hispanics,” added Ricardo Jimenez, MD, co-author and medical director of Sea Mar Community Health Centers in Seattle, where the study took place.

“Our study shows that one reminder intervention doesn’t necessarily work for all patients. We need to design interventions tailored to the patient’s language and cultural preference,” explained Coronado.

Initially, at-home fecal screening tests were sent to 2,722 patients who received their health care in the Sea Mar system and who were overdue for colon cancer screening. Some of the tests were returned by the U.S. Postal Service because patients no longer lived at the address on file. After excluding these patients and the patients who mailed their test kits back within three weeks, there were 2,010 assigned to one of the seven reminder interventions.

The authors believe it is the first study to rigorously test the effectiveness of reminder strategies in a safety net system among patients with different language preferences.

Study strengths include its large, diverse sample size and ability to capture the patients’ demographic and medical information in the medical record. The study also has some limitations. Researchers could determine whether the text messages were sent to active cell numbers, but not whether patients received the text messages. They also don’t know whether patients listened to the automated phone messages or read the postcards.

The study was funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health Common Fund and the National Cancer Institute, and is part of the larger STOP Colon Cancer pragmatic trial that aims to improve colorectal cancer screening in community health clinics in Oregon, California and Washington (UH2AT007782) (4UH3CA188640-02).

In addition to Coronado and Dr. Jimenez, other authors include Jennifer Rivelli, MA, Morgan Fuoco, MA, William Vollmer, PhD, Amanda Petrik, MS, Erin Keast, MPH, from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon, and Sara Barker, MPH, and Emily Topalanchik from Sea Mar Community Health Center in Seattle..

7 Personal Finance Apps That Should be on Your Phone

personal finance

Technology has made it easier than ever to keep a tight rein on your personal finances. With the right app, you can manage a personal daily budget, save for something specific—a dream vacation, for example—and even automate transfers from your checking account to your savings.

Using apps to manage money is increasingly becoming the norm and not just the practice of hard-core computer geeks. In fact, digital banking and finance technology (or, “fintech,” for short) are becoming global phenomena.

Juniper’s Digital Banking: The Roadmap to 2020 report, predicts over 37% of the adult global population will be mobile banking users by 2020.

A recent survey by ING reveals that among European bankers surveyed, 48% felt that mobile/digital banking made them more in control of their finances and 20% said the technology helped them pay bills on time.

And from the same Juniper study referenced above, Andrew Mikesell from SAP said, “Customers who adopt mobile banking channels tend to be more profitable.”

Here are seven personal finance apps that should be installed on your mobile device (these apps are available for both iOS and Android):

For Managing Your Budget:

  1. Mint: Budget, Bills Finance

Intuit’s Mint app is a comprehensive budget manager. The app serves as a centralized portal from which you can manage bank accounts, credit cards, and more. Intuit is a leader in fintech, so the Mint app can also be used to export and import data from other Intuit apps including TurboTax, Payroll, and QuickBooks.

  1. You Need a Budget

YNAB is a personal finance app popular with millennials. Its many features include letting users separate out a budget into different categories such as “Entertainment.” It allows for quickly entering any money you spend so you can see where you may be able to cut down unnecessary costs.

For Managing Your Credit Score:

  1. Credit Karma

Nearly everyone by now has heard of Credit Karma, and not just because of its quirky TV commercials, it’s a darn good app. Credit Karma lets you check your credit score for free while not causing damage to your credit rating. While it doesn’t provide the actual score from the credit agencies, it provides an accurate estimate of your credit health. The app also offers suggestions to help you increase your credit score.

For Saving:

  1. Digit

Digit is a savings app that is actually fun to use. The app reviews your checking account and automatically places an amount you can actually afford into your savings account. One Digit user wrote a review saying Digit helped them save $ 1,774 in 10 months.

For Small Business and Personal Banking:

  1. Quicken

Quicken is an ideal personal finance app for anyone who is also an entrepreneur. The personal finance edition is Quicken Home and Business, which lets users manage a budget, mortgages, investments, pay bills, and more. You can upgrade to Quicken Home and Business to manage your small business ledger, business taxes, and more.

However, a day before Apple launches the iPhone 8 and all the other goodies it prepared for this year’s iPhone event, Xiaomi will hold an event in China to introduce an all-screen handset of its own.

The best cell phone plans for seniors

As the number of candles on your birthday cake increase, so do the deals and discounts!

Generally, money expert Clark Howard recommends Republic Wireless or Sprint as the best cell phone carrier deals for one person, or T-Mobile or Sprint for families. However, if you’re in your golden years, you might be able to save even more plans!

Cell phone plans for older adults

With many senior mobile plans, it might feel like you’re getting the short end of the stick. Many carriers boast simplicity and ease of use —which is great — but seniors deserve options.

Currently, there’s only one plan on the market from a major wireless carrier that serves both new and current senior customers: T-Mobile‘s. Verizon does offer a plan specifically for seniors, but it’s not available to new customers and there’s no option for unlimited data. AT&T used to advertise their Senior Nation 200 plan, but it appears that option no longer exists.

Here’s a look at several different mobile plans designed just for seniors.

T-Mobile (ages 55 and up): Unlimited talk, text and data

If you’re 55 or older, T-Mobile recently launched a new plan: T-Mobile ONE Unlimited 55+.

  • Cost: $ 60, taxes and fees included, with AutoPay
    • It’s $ 50 for the first line and $ 10 for a second line
    • Without the AutoPay discount, you’ll pay $ 5 more per line
  • What you get: Two lines of T-Mobile ONE with unlimited talk, text and 4G LTE data
  • How to get it: Call 1-866-454-1206, go to the website or visit a local retail store

Verizon Nationwide 65 Plus Plan (ages 65 and up): Choose talk, text and data limits

  • Cost: Varies
    • Voice is $ 29.99 for 200 minutes (overage is $ 0.45 per minute)
    • Unlimited messaging is an extra $ 20
    • 2GM of data is an extra $ 30 (overage is $ 10 per 1GB)
  • How to get it: Visit this website to learn more about the plan

Consumer Cellular (no age minimum): Choose talk, text and data limits

  • Cost: Varies
    • Unlimited talk is $ 30
    • Unlimited texts with 3GB of data is an extra $ 30 per month
    • Additional lines are $ 10 per month
  • How to get it: Visit this website to learn more about the plan

Wireless carriers offering senior discounts

Drake Jabs Back At Jay-Z’s Money Phone Bars In Video Clip

Drake joined Future and Lil Boosie as the latest rappers to take Jay-Z‘s money phone jab from the Brooklyn rapper’s “The Story of O.J.” track from the 4:44 album. Drizzy was in Texas for his annual Houston Appreciation Week and left a humorous message for Hov in response.

After honoring former pole athletes Lira Galore, Miracle Watts, and Maliah Michel during an epic retiring of their jerseys and hanging them in the rafters, Drake got on video with huge stacks of money and put them to his ear. Drizzy’s love of strippers is well known and he responded in kind to Jay-Z with the stacks in hand.

“Hello? What they say? Don’t put money in your ear?” Drake said, apparently just having a laugh and not at all attempting to start a beef.

Check out Drake’s money phone response to Jay-Z in the clip below courtesy of Karen Civil.

But not everyone is laughing.

Harry Shares His Regret Over Last Phone Call with Mom Diana: ‘If I’d Known … the Things I Would Have Said to Her’

Prince William and Prince Harry have shared poignant new photographs from their personal collection of their late mother, Princess Diana, as they open up about her life and legacy in a new documentary.

The deeply personal photos come from albums that the princes have been looking over in memory of the mother as part of ITV’s Our Mother Diana: Her Life and Legacy special, which airs in the U.K. on Monday. August 31 will mark the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death in a Paris car crash.

The documentary features appearances by Diana’s brother Charles Spencer, Elton John and Rihanna, who took an HIV test alongside Harry in Barbados last December to help break the stigma of getting tested. Diana was an early and very public campaigner for HIV and AIDS awareness and treatment.

The princes, who say that they will not speak out at length about her like this again, also talk movingly about the fact that their last phone call from her – on the day she died – was so short. Being such young boys, aged 15 and 12 respectively, they were keen to get to back to playing with their cousins at the Queen’s Scottish retreat, Balmoral. “And if I’d known that that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother the things that I would – the things I would have said to her,” Harry says in the documentary.

While discussing the documentary with reporters — including PEOPLE — at a meeting in Kensington Palace, William said, “This is a tribute from her sons to her.” He added that standing before a group about to watch the documentary was “possibly the most nervous I’ve ever been.”

“It’s one thing doing a documentary like this and it’s another thing standing front of all of you guys and explaining about something very personal to you,” he said. “Nevertheless, I think it’s very important that I’m here to do that.”

And William – who like Harry finds talking about his mother so intensely and publicly difficult — vowed, “We won’t speak as openly and as publicly about her again.”

He added, “We feel hopefully this film will provide the other side from her close family friends that you might not have heard from before, from those who knew her best, and from those who want to protect her memory and want to remind people of the person that she was: The warmth, the humor, and what she was like as a mother, which probably hasn’t come across before in many other pieces from other people.”

Harry also revealed he has only cried tears of grief twice – at her graveside at Althorp on September 6, 1997, and since then “maybe, maybe once. ”

“So there’s, you know, there’s a lot of — there’s a lot of grief that still needs to be let out.”

Harry added “There’s not a day that William and I don’t wish that she was still around, and we wonder what kind of a mother she would be now, and what kind of a public role she would have, and what a difference she would be making.”

Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy will air Monday at 9 p.m. in the U.K. on ITV.

The show is one of several commemorations of the Princess in print and on film. PEOPLE and ABC have partnered in a two-night television event The Story of Diana, airing on Aug. 9 and 10 at 9 p.m. ET.

SHOPPING NEWS UPDATE:

Grief Is A Cell Phone Not Answered

I reached for my phone as soon as I got into the car the other day and started to call my husband. It was muscle memory at work, playing a cruel trick on me.

For about 30 years, I called my husband every day as I left work ― or anyplace else for that matter ― to let him know that I was on my way. Letting one another know our whereabouts became a habit that eventually was picked up by our kids. Until she graduated high school, my daughter called me precisely at 3:05 p.m. every school day to say she was getting on the bus.

We are one of those families who calls while the plane is still taxiing to the gate to say that it landed safely. We call when we are stuck in traffic to say we may be late. If we stop unexpectedly at the supermarket for milk, we call so that nobody will worry.  We call when we get in the Uber (and sometimes snap a photo of the driver because you just can’t be too sure of anything these days). We call when we leave the restaurant where we had dinner with friends and take the family “breathalyzer” test where we have to recite all our birthdays and middle names. We call as soon as we clear the elevators as we exit the doctor’s office. We would probably call sooner but our reception in elevators is spotty. It’s just our thing. Or at least it was.

My husband died after a long illness on Jan. 4. In most ways grieving-wise, I feel like I am handling his loss appropriately ― which is to say I somehow manage to get out of bed every morning, have reduced the mountain of post-death paperwork I was buried under, and am trying to resurrect my pre-caregiving social life although I’m trapped in that cycle of making plans in earnest and then canceling them at the last minute from inertia. It’s all par for the course, I’m told.

I also am careful to not set myself up for sadness. I stay busy in life-affirming pursuits ― I cook, I garden, I bring soup to sick friends ― and have edited my music playlist to avoid the sad songs. I couldn’t listen to k.d. lang sing “Hallelujah” without sobbing before, so no reason to think I could hear it now with different results.

But that moment in the parking garage last week, when I sat frozen in my car with my cell phone in my hand, a shockwave of awareness washed over me: I had nobody to call. Nobody who was waiting to hear from me. Nobody who particularly cared when I would be getting home or how my day went. Nobody to have a glass of wine ready for me or dinner started. Nobody who argued with the cable company or made sure the oil in my car was changed or took a beloved dog to the vet on her last day when I just couldn’t.

I was now alone. And the devil of that was in the details. I had nobody to call.

I sank. Rapidly. And was reminded of the big difference between feeling lonesome and feeling alone. Lonesome is your state of being when you have no one available to be with you. The short-term fix is a Netflix binge and remembering to make plans in advance for next weekend.

Being alone? That’s a whole other nightmare. Sometimes, you can be alone even when you are surrounded by people and activities and somehow, they don’t get counted by your heart.

In the car that day, I remembered the last time I had felt this alone. It was one night in my 20s when I confused lust for love and watched a man I barely knew leave my apartment in the pre-dawn hours knowing I would never see him again. Casual sex, for me, has always been a contradiction of terms. And when he left, I felt very alone.

Back then, someone sent me this quote from cartoonist Jules Feiffer:

I live in a shell
Which is inside a dungeon
Which is inside a fortress
Which is under the ground
Which is under the sea
Where I am safe
From you.
If you loved me, you would find me.

My husband was a good man. He was honest and decent and never left me feeling alone. He always found me. Now if he would just answer the damn phone.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

EXCLUSIVE: PUTIN’S CHRISTMAS DAY PHONE CALL TO DONALD TRUMP

Blogger’s note. On December 25, 1991, less than two hours before announcing his resignation as president of a Soviet Union that was breaking up into a commonwealth of independent republics, Mikhail Gorbachev telephoned President George H.W. Bush to say how much he had appreciated working with him for the sake of international order, how ready he was to see Boris Yeltsin succeed him as leader of Russia, and how much he expected that leaders of all the former Soviet republics–especially Russia–would “move forward with recognition and respect for the sovereignty that each has.” Since the New York Times has just published a transcript of this final phone conversation between Gorbachev and G.H.W. Bush , I’m happy to furnish a transcript (brilliantly hacked by an operative known to me only as Shaggy Bear) of the first telephone conversation between Vladimir Putin, current President of the Russian Federation, and President-elect Donald Trump. By remarkable coincidence, this conversation also occurred on Christmas Day.

VLADIMIR VLADIMIROVICH PUTIN: Donald, my dear friend. It is good to hear your voice.

D.T. And yours too, Didi–because this call tells me how much you love me. You know it’s amazing how many world leaders have been calling lately. They all love me. It’s just a beautiful thing. A beautiful thing to be loved by so many important and powerful people, even though–between you and me, Didi, you understand?–some of them are not really so beautiful as you and I are. Believe me, I’ve seen those pics of your bare pecs. You’re really ripped! Who’s your trainer?

V.V.P. We’ll get to that, Donald. One thing at a time. Let me first wish you and your whole family a Merry Christmas–in the face and in the teeth of the war against Christmas that I’m told is raging over there in America. You won’t get any weasel words from me–no Happy Holidays or Best Wishes of the Season. You and I believe in Christmas, in Christianity, and for us the only war to be fought at Christmas time or anytime is the war against Muslims–right? That’s where we stand together and fight together. The fewer Muslims there are in Russia, in Chechnya, in America, and everywhere else, the merrier the whole world will be. The merriest thing we could do is get rid of them all. So Merry Christmas, my friend!

D.T. Couldn’t have said it better myself! Merry Christmas to you too. And before I forget, I can’t thank you enough for siccing your hackers on the Democratic National Committee here and hanging out all those files like Christmas stockings to show just how hard the DNC tried to sink Bernie Sanders and prop up Crooked Hillary. Cozy Bear and Fancy Bear–cuddly cubs of the great Russian bear! Tell those cubs how much I love them both, because of course I know how much they love me. They did great things for my campaign. HUUUUGE.

V.V.D. You’re very welcome, Donald. And I can’t tell you how warmly I welcome your election to the presidency. Because I know you can help us solve a lot of problems quickly. Just making Rex Tillerson Secretary of State will be a great start.

D.T. Right you are, Didi. I know that Rex has become a great friend of yours, and believe me, I’m just as eager as he is to help you drill for oil in Siberia. Doing that would be a huge win for both of us. HUUUUGE. All we have to do–all I have to do– is scrap the fucking sanctions. And I can tell you that’s up at the top of my list, right up there with repealing Obamacare, gutting the EPA, ending the war on Christmas, and ending the war on coal.

By the way, you know as well as I do why we imposed the sanctions in the first place: because a few politically correct pinheads over here and in the UN didn’t like what you did in Crimea and Ukraine. Look, Didi, as far as I’m concerned, Crimea is much better off under your great leadership than it ever was before, and I would say the same about all Ukraine, not just the part that your people have so far heroically liberated from its corrupt and incompetent leaders. All this nonsense about respecting the independence of your neighbors. Garbage! You should never have been sanctioned at all for adopting Crimea and getting into Ukraine. You should be rewarded for making them great again! And rewarding you is just what I plan to do once I get into the White House. #nomore sanctions #fullscaledrillinginSiberia #fulltwitterspeedahead!

V.V.D. Thank you so much, Donald. It’s amazing how much we think alike.

D.T. And I’ll tell you where else we think alike, Didi: Syria. What you’ve done over there is beautiful, just beautiful. Along with Assad, you’ve just about wiped out the opposition. Thanks to your bombing, they’re out of Aleppo at last–I mean those that survived, of course. And Aleppo now presents a golden opportunity: ruins as far as the eye can see. Those ruins will have to be REBUILT! If only I were thirty years younger–hell, twenty years younger–I’d be over there in a flash raising new Trump towers all over town.

You know, the crazy thing about our dealings with Syria is that we’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars–hell, billions–funding the opposition when we don’t even know who the hell they are, except we do know that some of them are Al Qaeda and a lot of them are terrorists. We tried to find and train the so-called “moderate” opposition and ended up getting nowhere. There is no moderate opposition in Syria. There’s the government and its enemies, who are all mixed up with terrorists. And you and I know which side we’re on.

Let me tell you, Didi. I like strong leaders like you and Assad, guys who know how to crush their enemies and stay in power. And I like leaders who go after radical Islamic terrorists, because just about the only thing I hate worse than those terrorists is crooked Hillary.

V.V.D. What can I say, Donald–except that I’m freshly amazed by how much we agree?

D.T. But there’s just one little thing, Didi. One thing we might disagree on.

V.V.D. And what is that, Donald?

D.T. Nukes.

V.V.D. Nukes? What’s the problem? Just because our RS-24 Yars Intercontinental Ballistic Missile can strike you anywhere in the U.S. with ten independently targetable nuclear warheads, you’re getting nervous, Donald?

D.T. Didi, something tells me this could be the beginning of a beautiful arms race.

V.V.D. Da, Mr. President. You’re absolutely right. Crappy New Year!
