Mark Making: how shape-shifting plays a huge part in the contemporary artwork of Mark McClure

We caught up with Mark McClure as his work is displayed as part of the abstract showcase at our Brighton gallery. Building up dynamic layers is something the original Abstract artists excelled at, and it’s something that artist Mark McClure knows something about too.

Murmation by Mark McClure

Artrepublic (AR):Abstraction, by definition is dealing with ideas rather than events. What kind of ideas do you find yourself dealing with in your work?

Mark McClure (MM): My early painted pieces originally developed from landscapes – the structural and architectural shapes around me in London. I took this further when I started using bits of wood and paper on canvas, taking the landscape to a more directly connected work that used materials found in the scenes that they represented.

These ideas of abstract landscape and representing structural forms, patterns and everyday motifs – combined with using materials and textures from my daily surroundings – are the basis for all the work I do today, albeit using a more pared-down, condensed visual language.

AR: Abstraction is also a state of preoccupation. In general, what do you find preoccupies you and why?

MM: Challenging my own perceptions of what I like about a piece and what I don’t. It’s not always constructive to consciously think about this for too long, but I find it fascinating. If I like something immediately I often find that I don’t so much a few days later… It’s usually the works that are a struggle that become the long-term loves. It’s a hard-earned thing. There’s probably a profound life lesson in there somewhere.

AR: Historically, abstract art was as much about process and materials as it was the outcome. Can you talk us through your usual making process, and the materials you feel an affinity with?

MM: It varies a lot. The trigger can be one of many things; sometimes a certain piece of wood or metal will catch my eye and become the starting point of a piece, especially for the sculptural works. These then slowly develop – as a pile of changing shapes and objects on the worktop, which are added to or taken from – before they slowly settle into place and are fixed.

For the mosaics I tend to sketch in a sketchbook or on the computer and take a piece to an almost finished state before cutting wood or having it cut, and then painting and assembling the work. There’s always an element of chance and the happy accidents often make a piece – either with loosely painted additions or through the way cut shapes interact with each other

AR: If you could collaborate on a project with anyone – artist/ non-artist, dead or alive – who would it be and why?

MM: I think it’d be someone like Joshua Davis, a creative coder and artist who has been doing amazing work for decades on Praystation. My background is in digital interactive design, and I’m slowly introducing elements of that journey back into my current work. So to do a project with someone with that knowledge and creativity could only end in kickass awesomeness.

AR: Consider the Cubists as an early-20th century art collective, pushing each other’s work forward. Who’s in your art gang?

MM: Good question. I don’t really have a core group who are connected through similar work. It largely depends where I am. I’m lucky enough to live near the good folk at LookUp Editions, who live and breathe abstraction and do a very good pint-based critique. After that it’s all about long boozy chats in the pub, which normally go off topic after 20 minutes and onto something entirely different. The usual suspects include the likes of Ben Slow, Dan Cimmermann, Nadeem Chughtai and the Static boys. My studio neighbours Richard Stone and Hannah Ludnow are my daily sounding boards – even though our work is hugely different to each other’s, it helps to have a completely fresh take on things.

Andy Murray Breaks Down in Tears After Emotional 3 a.m. Victory While ‘Closing Time’ Plays

An emotional Andy Murray broke down in tears after pulling out a hard-fought victory over Marius Copil at the Citi Open early Friday morning.

The former world No. 1—currently ranked 832nd—wept into a towel for several minutes after defeating Copil 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 in a round of 16 match that lasted for more than three hours, and didn’t finish until 3 a.m. “It was just the emotions coming out at the end of an extremely long day and a long match,” Murray told reporters.

However, some speculated that Murray’s tears had more to do with his ongoing comeback following a persistent hip injury that kept him sidelined for nearly a year.

The tennis great is set to face Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals later on Friday, but said there’s a chance he won’t play. “Finishing matches at 3 in the morning is not good,” he said. “It’s not good for the players. It’s not good for anyone, I don’t think, involved in the event. It’s not good for fans, TV, nobody.”

The Best Plays From the Overwatch League Season 1 Grand Finals

After hard-fought battles over many weeks, London Spitfire and Philadelphia Fusion were the two teams to emerge as the finalist contenders. And after two splits of edge-of-your-seat Overwatch action, we have the first team to be crowned best in the world.

After countless hours over many weeks the Overwatch League drew to close this weekend with the Season 1 Grand Final series between Philadelphia Fusion (Fusion) and London Spitfire (Spitfire). All eyes were on Fusion after its incredible display of skill and execution to dispatch the favourites, New York Excelsior, to secure its spot in the finals.

London Spitfire on the other hand, was the dark horse favourite. For most of stage 4 it struggled to find consistent form, often failing to take advantage of key moments. When it came to the playoffs though, everything started working out for the team and their cohesive teamwork was on point.

The stage was set and these two teams went head to head over two days to see who’d take home the $ 1,000,000 USD prize money and be the first inaugural Overwatch League, Season 1 winners!

Day 1

The first map was Dorado, and Fusion looked scary. Carpe was in fine form as per usual, often being everywhere where Spitfire thought he wasn’t. It was clear though that Spitfire made them earn every meter, forcing Fusion to perform some incredible clutch moments in order for it to reach its goal in overtime. The stress was visibly taking its toll and Boombox’s hands told the story:

Spitfire came out strong and took the first two checkpoints with ease. Fusion found their defensive form and dug their heels in tight on the final segment, flanking Spitfire well and timing their kills perfectly, eventually stopping them and taking the first map. This victory was short lived though with Spitfire taking Oasis 2-0, showing its strength and superiority in control map strategies. The first series was a level 1-1.

Eichenwalde was up next with Fusion on the attack. Using a slow and steady strategy and taking advantage of its faster respawn times until it had a player advantage, it took the first point fairly quickly. It was here that Spitfire found Fusion’s kryptonite and continued to dive aggressively, keeping Fusion staggered and stopping it just short of the overpass.

Fusions advantage in defending points with shields and snipers was readily apparent and Spitfire were clearly having a hard time finding an answer to this riddle. Thanks to a standout play from Fury using a well placed D’Va ultimate, Spitfire immediately jumped on the opportunity and stole first point. The plan from here was as plain as day, Spitfire dove the enemy and took all key positions to allow the payload to move. With no positional advantage, Carpe found it impossible to set himself up and even Sado couldn’t manage to break Spitfires backline with his Winston dives. Spitfire rolled forward and took the third map making the series 2-1 in its favour.

The fourth map was Volskaya Industries with Fusion attacking first. Struggling to find early momentum, it took a triple tank dive and a massive Poko D’Va bomb to secure the first point. Profit then switched to Mei to break up the dive tactic and found success, forcing Fusion to revert back to a standard team composition. Immediately, Spitfire started aggressive diving the battered Fusion and managed to keep it from fully capturing the final point.

Switching sides, yet again Fusion stuck to its double sniper and shield defence. Looking solid until the final push, it was Fury’s D’Va yet again that perfectly positioned an ultimate that broke the Fusion gates and allowed Spitfire the first point. It was here that Profit started unleashing his inner beast, nearly capturing the win with his Hanzo, only being stopped by the last millisecond.

Profit wasn’t finished though. Switching to his Tracer, he pulled off the following series of kills that took out nearly the entire team solo and secured not only the map, but the first set, taking Spitfire to a 1-0 lead in the Grand Finals series!

If you want to view the entire day 1 series, it’s up on the Overwatch League’s official Twitch page here:

Day 2

The next day kicked things off with Junkertown and there was a noticeable change in tactics from the Spitfire team. Carpe was being completely shut down. His Widow was getting few final blows and his deaths were relatively high. Fusion’s defence, for the first time in this series, seemed broken and Spitfire took all three checkpoints in comfortable fashion. Less confident on attack, Fusion looked shaky the moment the gates opened and struggled at every turn. Eventually it broke on the final push and Spitfire took the early lead in the second set 1-0.

Unfortunately for Fusion, it seemed just as broken on Lijiang Tower. Much like Oasis, Spitfire held a clear advantage in control maps and never allowed Fusion to formulate a winning strategy. Lost for answers, the first control point even ended on a C9 with Spitfire the victors:

The next control point wasn’t any better for the Fusion team and Spitfire wasn’t wasting any time. Staying in control, Spitfire took the second control point and secured a 2-0 lead on day 2.

The third map was King’s Row and finally Fusion had found a winning attack strategy with its shields and snipers! Carpe was looking like his old self again and this spelled trouble for anyone in his sights. With plays like these, it’s hard to argue against:

Like before, Spitfire made Fusions work hard for it, but Fusion managed to squeeze the final checkpoint in overtime.

With Spitfire attacking, it was clear that Fusion’s defence was still its strongest weapon, and it took a triple tank dive for Spitfire to take the first point in the final minute. Spitfire ran with the momentum and was now reading Fusion like a book, with Gesture picking the Zarya ultimate with a counter of his own just before the second point:

From here, nothing Fusion did could stop the runaway train that was Spitfire as it won with time on the clock and forcing a LAST ATTEMPT with just over one minute on the clock. Learning from its previous winning strategy, Spitfire went a triple tank dive with high sustain in order to slowly pick apart the Fusion defence. It worked as intended and London Spitfire won the map and secured their well-earned first place in the Overwatch League Season 1!

If you want to view the entire day 2 series, it’s up on the Overwatch League’s official Twitch page here:

That’s All For Now

And that marks the end of the first season for the Overwatch League and what has been an incredible series that has showcased many incredible moments and matches. It was obvious to everyone that Profit was the stand out player of the series and he truly deserved the MVP award. No one knows what Season 2 is going to bring us, but if it’s one thing we’re sure of, it’s that we’re all looking forward to the action!

Tiny Harris And T.I. Dance In Viral Video — Rapper Kisses His Wife As Xscape Music Plays In The Background

On, off, and on. Tiny Harris was seen dancing and getting sweet kisses from T.I. as she continues to party and celebrate her birthday inside a Miami, Florida nightclub.

Tiny looked gorgeous in a tight purple body suit as her husband twirled her around as a famous song from Xscape played in the background.

The classic, “Who Can I Run To” performed by Tiny, Kandi Burruss, and the Scott divas, set the romantic atmosphere for the little dance.

This video confirms that Tiny has put the Asia’h Epperson cheating drama behind her much like she did after her man was caught with Bernice Burgos.

While some are happy, like Rasheeda Frost, she is making her marriage work; others are fuming that she took the cheater back.

One fan said: “I’m so happy to see T. I is trying to make Tiny smile. I wish he could do right by my girl..they look so cute together. Damm, she has been by his side through everything and still shows the world she is his ride or die wife love and love him dearly. Kudos to these two. Let them live their lives.”

Another commenter stated: “All of you don’t see he’s trying his best to let her go without hurting her….T.I. is letting go! They have that kind of relationship/ love that we will never understand no matter how much we pass judgment on them! Let them live.”

I don’t understand why she is always fighting with the side chicks to get back with him? Hell might as well forgive them tooYou deserve to be CANCELED!!!!!!!!!”

A fourth follower had this interesting remark to add: “They got that disrespectful love, and T.I. is swinging one way, Cause from what I see tiny never go with another man and when T.I. plays her she moves out, and they break up. True swingers don’t act like that.”

Many say they have an open marriage and not to worry about the diva and her man.

How Angels in America First Reminded the World That ‘Plays Can Matter’

When Angels in America returns to Broadway on Friday, in a production starring Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane, it will encounter a very different world from the one in which the play debuted around 25 years ago. In the intervening years, HIV and AIDS — the crisis around which so much of the Tony Kushner epic revolves — ceased to be the “death sentence” they once were, and the LGBTQ community won major political victories across the United States and elsewhere. But, as Nathan Lane recently told TIME, that doesn’t mean the play doesn’t still have meaningful lessons for the world of 2018.

That political side has always been part of what makes Angels so significant in the history of American theater. TIME’s William A. Henry III first reviewed the play in late 1992, after it had already debuted in San Francisco, won awards in London and run in Los Angeles all before its 1993 Broadway opening. Though he found some of the acting “bland,” it was clear from his review that there was a reason why Angels was making such waves:

The central visual image of this season’s most eagerly awaited American play is a towering wall, like the facade of some Greek Revival government colossus, with two jagged cracks running from top to bottom. Before a word is spoken, this symbol — with its promise of that facade’s eventually cracking wide open — conveys the aura of physical decay and revolutionary social change that drives Tony Kushner’s 7 1/2-hr. epic about AIDS, gay liberation and the breakdown of the Reagan era’s sanctimonious hypocrisy…

Henry explained that one of the main reasons behind the anticipation for Angels in America was that the play represented a new era in the cultural depiction of gay life: “The author and the delighted spectators reflect an evolution in attitude akin to what happened among blacks and women: one generation sought empathy; the next demanded justice; the generation equivalent to Kushner’s just flat-out asserted equality and spurned any more debate.”

Get your history fix in one place: sign up for the weekly TIME History newsletter

Henry returned to the play about a year later, to cover the Broadway production, now complete with both parts, Millennium Approaches and Perestroika. Its box-office success — despite the early days of the Perestroika production being mired in behind-the-scenes drama ranging from rewrites to what Henry called “stagehand mania” — had defied any fears that the subject matter would only appeal to a niche audience.

And it was, as the piece noted, “hugely significant”:

More than any other work in a theater era of gay self-assertion, it has brought that perspective to the mainstream. Angels was not only the first gay-centered play to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama, it came to the fore just as the argument about gays in the military was putting the gay cause at center stage for the first time in U.S. history. With its aggressive scorn for Ronald Reagan and Republicanism; for Mormons and moralizing; and its demonic view of lawyer-dealmaker Roy Cohn, a gay-bashing closet gay and a top-level G.O.P. influence peddler for more than three decades, Angels disproved truisms about the unmarketability of political drama. Instead it compellingly reasserted the theater’s place in public debate. Hearteningly to theater partisans, Angels generated excitement about a drama comparable to the biggest buzz about musicals. Above all, Angels demonstrated that plays can matter in a pop culture dominated by electronically recorded performances rather than live ones.

That was why, despite the show’s rocky road to the stage and any nitpicking that might be done over the script or acting — Henry, for example, found the second part too quick to declaim its theories about the world, rather than letting the audience arrive at those conclusions — the team behind it only expressed pleasure with the result.

”When we look back on this in five or 10 years, we are not going to remember our exasperation at the script coming in late or how much money it cost,” Rocco Landesman, president of the theater-ownership group financing the 1993 production, told TIME back then. “We are going to remember that we are the producers of Angels in America, the most important play in a generation.”

‘Overwatch’s Moira Plays Like Two Heroes in One

We got hands on with Overwatch‘s new hero Moira at Blizzcon. Like many characters in Overwatch, you instantly feel how fun she is to control and within a few minutes you can see yourself having a lot of fun with her.

Naturally, it was everyone’s first chance to play as Moira, so we ended up with about ten Moiras in the game. It’s an odd spectacle, two teams of Moiras constantly draining each other and healing each other.

But eventually people got curious about how other heroes stack up against the new geneticist.

That was good to see, because it’s clear that Moira might need some protecting. A Reaper that gets right onto her is going to make some short work of her, as we saw in the play session. She can even have a hard time dealing with a Tracer one-on-one, as every time Tracer blinks resets the wind-up on Moira’s drain.

She’s powerful, she has her counters.

It gets the most interesting when Moira comes into a setting with two established teams. As a hero swap, she has the potential to disrupt the norm. A team defending a corner or balcony, hiding behind its shields, will have to solve the problem of Moira when she’s picked.

In that sense, she could be a very good stalemate breaker. The change won’t be instant. The enemy team will still have a fair bit of time to react. But all of a sudden, those orbs are going to go through shields, and there’s a bit more sustain healing on the other side.

In the context of the wider meta, that’s exactly what Moira is doing. Coming into an established setting, and potentially disrupting everything. Could we see less reliance overall on clumping up behind shields in esports? That could make for a more exciting game. Time will tell.
