Does A’Ja Wilson Have A Point? The Top 5 NBA Salaries vs. WNBA Salaries in 2018

WNBA rookie A’ja Wilson recently caused a stir on Twitter when she addressed the huge pay gap between professional women and men basketball players the day after NBA star LeBron James signed a four-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $ 154 million.

Wilson followed up with a few more tweets expressing both her affinity for James and her dissatisfaction with the pay discrepancy between the earnings of male and female players. According to CNBC, women in the WNBA earn 20% of the minimum salary of an NBA player even though they’re essentially doing the same job.

The power forward also blasted the WNBA’s pay model, which pays players about 25% of its revenue. In comparison, the NBA pays its players about 50% of league revenue.

The pay gap between NBA and WNBA players is a longstanding and well-documented issue. Wilson, for example, signed a contract with the Las Vegas Aces earlier this year for a mere $ 52,564 despite being the WNBA’s No. 1 draft pick and a standout collegiate player. Most of the other rookies in the league will earn even less with a starting salary of $ 41,202 and the average salary for most incumbent players is around $ 50,000. In comparison, the starting salary for the NBA for the 2018–19 season is $ 582,180.

Naysayers, however, argue that WNBA players earn less because the league only generates $ 25 million in annual revenue while the NBA rakes in a whopping $ 7.4 billion. The WNBA also receives less money in its broadcast rights deal than the NBA.

Other Twitter users pointed out that the disparity is rooted in a lack of viewership and interest in female basketball (the WNBA averaged 7,716 fans per game last season). Plus, WNBA teams also play 34 games in a season for about four and half months if they don’t make the playoffs. By comparison, NBA teams play 82 games in the regular season for six months while the finals can stretch the season another two months.

Nevertheless, WNBA President Lisa Borders weighed into the debate, telling Forbes that bias against female athletes is at the heart of the pay disparity.

“Let’s be clear, there is a lot of sexism that still goes on. People do not believe that women can be superb professional athletes. That frankly is an ignorant perspective, but if you haven’t had the opportunity to see a game, a player or experienced the game, then perhaps you have an uninformed perspective. We invite folks into the area to actually see a game,” said Borders.

Most WNBA players will earn around $ 79,000 in the 2018 season while the maximum salary caps at $ 115,500 for veteran players. In comparison, take a look at what the top players in the NBA earned in the 2017–2018 regular season:

1. Stephen Curry earned $ 34.7 million.

For The First Time In Its 216-Year History, West Point Gets First Black Superintendent

West Point, America’s premier military college, which didn’t graduate its first black cadet until Reconstruction in 1877, now has its first black superintendent.

For the first time in its 216-year history, Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams, who has held high-ranking posts in Europe and Asia, will become the first black officer to command West Point. He will take over from Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen Jr. who is retiring after more than 40 years in the Army, also serving five years as West Point’s superintendent.

William’s appointment, according to the Associated Press, comes less than a year after cadet and Rhodes Scholar, Simone Askew, a black woman from Fairfax, Virginia, was selected as first captain of the Corps of Cadets last summer and graduated in May.

A 1983 graduate of the military college and native of Alexandria, Williams has served first, as deputy chief of staff for the Army in Europe and deputy commanding general for support for the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea. Recently, he was the commander of NATO’s Allied Land Command in Turkey.

Founded in 1802 along the west bank of the Hudson River 50 miles north of New York, West Point didn’t graduate its first black cadet until 1877. Throughout the 20th century, the military college didn’t graduate another black cadet until Benjamin O. Davis Jr. arrived there in 1932. During his stay, Davis ate alone, roomed alone, and was shunned by fellow cadets because he was black. After his graduation in 1936, he would go on to command the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, retiring as an Air Force general in 1970. West Point’s newest barracks, per AP, was named after Davis.

For the past couple of years, the U.S. has increasingly shifted its focus on diversifying its ranks, with policies that emphasized inclusion, and marketing campaigns that targeted underrepresented communities. Of the 1,200 incoming members of West Point’s class of 2020, 186 are African Americans.

dream kitchen inspiration

While this project is an older project, completed a few year ago – it is one that I love to revisit from time to time when looking for dream kitchen inspiration. The classic style and timeless details never grow old and this kitchen offers a ton of inspiration!

 dream kitchen inspiration

This country home was thoughtfully and lovingly updated by the homeowner who is a designer in her own right as well. The kitchen was originally very small and cramped. A lovely bright addition was added to create an eating area with a cozy fireplace and view to the lake. The screened porch was reworked into a server area behind the main kitchen that really makes this lay out unique and saves the character of the exterior while adding to the charm of the inside.

On a bright summer day this house is so charming you feel like you are in the south of France. It is always a challenge to respect the heritage of the original house while updating the kitchen and the goal is to make it look like the new parts look like they have been there all along. – Rhonda Thornton, Bloomsbury Fine Cabinetry

So algorithms are sexist. Who knew they had a point of view?

And are we being discriminated against?

Laptops

In the past year we’ve become increasingly wary about technology and the effects that it can have on society.

We found out last year that our smartphones could actually be intrinsically sexist, and from patriarchal predictive texting (suggesting the word ‘fat’ when speaking about women and ‘tall’ when talking about men), to PMS tracking apps for boyfriends, we found that the gender roles they perpetuate could actually be pretty harmful.

Let’s not even get started about the fact that Siri can tell you Donald Trump’s birthplace within seconds but until very recently wasn’t equipped to answer basic questions on rape and assault.

Now it turns out technology could be even more backwards than we thought, with recent studies finding that algorithms are actually pretty sexist too

Yes, really.

According to a recent study, women are likely to be discriminated against when applying for everything from university places to bank loans, and all because of the algorithms built into the programmes that pre-select applicants.

It has even got to the point where we should question whether intrinsically sexist algorithms are actually keeping women out of certain sectors.

‘We have a problem,’ Professor Noel Sharkey, Co-Director of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics, told Today. He went on to explain how the deeply embedded algorithms used by robotic platforms create an automatic bias, something he wants redressed.

‘We need many more women coming into this field to solve it,’ he explained, encouraging more women to get into the IT industry.

There has been a recent push to get increasing numbers of women involved in STEM, something that Professor Sharkey has also emphasised, and with women currently making up only 9% of the UK’S engineering force and revelations that a UK medical school had negatively selected against women, there’s no denying he’s right.

Times need to change, and we need to start opening conversations to put that into action.

White nationalists see violent Charlottesville rally as successful turning point

HARI SREENIVASAN: We begin tonight with continuing coverage of the attacks in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend.

On Saturday, President Trump drew criticism from the left and right alike when he didn’t name neo-Nazi groups for inciting the attacks. He instead denounced violence — quote — “on many sides.”

Today, he was more specific.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.

We are a nation founded on the truth that all of us are created equal.

Those who spread violence in the name of bigotry strike at the very core of America.

HARI SREENIVASAN: The fallout from the weekend’s violence continued to reverberate around the country today. In Charlottesville, the driver of the suspected vehicle that rammed into a crowd of people appeared in court via video link.

And Attorney General Jeff Sessions said this morning the vehicle attack meets the legal definition of domestic terrorism.

NewsHour producer P.J. Tobia was in Charlottesville over the weekend, and begins our coverage tonight.

P.J. TOBIA: Protests continued across the country today in Tennessee in response to the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville over the weekend, and in solidarity with those killed and injured.

MAN: We are here today to send a message to our white brothers and sisters that white supremacy hurts you too.

P.J. TOBIA: Back in Charlottesville, fallout from the rally continued. In the district court there, a judge ordered 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr. held without bond on second-degree murder charges. He’s accused of ramming his car into a crowd of demonstrators who came out against the white nationalist rally to denounce a Charlottesville city decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

The rally included members of the KKK, neo-Nazis and others. Those who knew him in high school say he professed enthusiasm for Nazi ideology.

Thirty-two-year-old Heather Heyer of Charlottesville was killed in the attack. Nineteen others were injured.

Her mother spoke outside her home today.

SUSAN BRO, Mother of Victim: I am extremely proud of my daughter. I am extremely proud that she stood for what she believed in, that she not only gave mouth to it, but she gave heart to it, she gave her soul to it, and now she’s given her life to it.

P.J. TOBIA: Separately, two Virginia state police officers were also killed, when their helicopter, which had been monitoring the protests, crashed.

GOV. TERRY MCAULIFFE, D-Va.: Those state troopers were with me 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Berke Bates was part of our family. And it was tough yesterday, after I left here to drive to the Bates home and to see a man in those two beautiful children whose dad is not coming home ever again.

P.J. TOBIA: Charlottesville Mayor Michael Signer called out the rally’s organizers.

MAYOR MICHAEL SIGNER, Charlottesville, Virginia: There’s a lot of bluster in the alt-right. There’s a lot violence in the alt-right. There’s a lot of hate.

P.J. TOBIA: Signer rejected criticism that the police response was inadequate.

MAYOR MICHAEL SIGNER: There were almost 1,000 law enforcement officers on the ground for an operation in a city of 50,000 people. We had descended upon us thousands of people for the initial event. Thank God it wasn’t worse. No shots were fired. No other lives were lost. No property was damaged.

P.J. TOBIA: White nationalist Matthew Heimbach, who leads a small group based in Indiana, helped organize the protest and showed up at the Charlottesville courthouse today. When we spoke yesterday, he called the rally a success and says the white nationalist movement is stronger than ever.

MATTHEW HEIMBACH, Nationalist Front: If the nationalist community can come together, stand together and fight together, that we are going to be unstoppable, that our rise, even just going back since I have been involved in this movement, it used to be a rally of 50 guys was very successful. Now we’re rallying 1,000, 1, 500 people in the streets. Our movement is growing.

P.J. TOBIA: Heimbach took zero responsibility for an event that led to death and injury.

Someone died yesterday because of your rally. In the rally you helped organize, someone’s dead because of that. How do you feel about that? And do you feel at all responsible?

MATTHEW HEIMBACH: Not at all. There would have been no violence whatsoever yesterday if the police had simply done their job and given the leftist protesters their own space to protest, which is their right, and we’d been allowed to hold our rally. The left are the ones that were attacking us.

P.J. TOBIA: Another group that drew people from around the country for the weekend’s rally, armed right-wing militias known as the Oath Keepers and 3 Percenters.

They don’t share all the beliefs of white nationalist groups calling for racial separations, but do hold some extremist views. The group’s leadership said they were there to protect everyone’s First Amendment rights. At least one militia group ended up needing protection themselves.

Earlier this year, NewsHour went inside one of these groups, the Georgia Security Force, a local 3 Percent militia.

Chris Hill is their leader.

CHRIS “BLOOD ANGEL” HILL, Georgia Security Force: I think what the government gives, the government can take away. If they’re providing the security for us, they can take it away.

P.J. TOBIA: After this weekend, at least one militia group said it would no longer encourage participants to show up at white nationalist rallies.

This morning, the FBI announced that it had arrested an Oklahoma man in a sting operation on charges that he tried to detonate what he thought was a 1,000-pound bomb in Oklahoma City on Saturday; 23-year-old Jerry Drake Varnell told an undercover agent he believed in the 3 Percent militia ideology, and was inspired by the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

Meanwhile, other cities around the country are considering removing their Confederate statues, and white nationalists say they will continue to stage large protests to prevent their removal — Hari.

HARI SREENIVASAN: P.J., you and our producer Mark Scialla were both there over the weekend. Both sides, the left and the right that were there, say that this is a turning point. So, how is that the case?

P.J. TOBIA: Well, the right-wing right nationalists say it’s a turning point because they managed to pull off what was in their view a successful rally, even though the planned speeches that they had and the actual event formally really never took place.

They were able to create all of this chaos in Charlottesville. They were able to get their agenda pushed to the front page of newspapers, and television news programs. They were enter the city, protest, march around with their signs and wave their shields and get a lot of coverage for their message.

And they weren’t — none of them were injured. None of them were really hurt in any way. They feel like they got their message out and it was a success.

So, it was a turning point for them, in that they feel like they really know how to do this now. They can organize, get into a city, and get out and get headlines.

For the left, they feel like they’re the ones who actually won the day because the white nationalists weren’t able to carry out their formal program. They got pushed out of Lee Park, as Mark and I saw. They were rallied sort of from the area of battle, if you will, and then they were having a victory march when that terrible, tragic murder by automobile took place.

And so both sides feel they can claim victory and both sides will almost certainly become more calcified in their beliefs and a little more outrageous in their rhetoric.

HARI SREENIVASAN: How are these people different than the racists that used to march on cities years ago?

P.J. TOBIA: In many ways, they’re not.

They’re young men, many more affluent than in previous generations, but real — the real difference now is that they have harnessed the power of social media, so that they’re able to organize much more quickly, put together sort of lightning strikes of grouping to get together in a place.

They can also get their message out to a much broader audience, people who would never have engaged with white nationalists. Previously, if you wanted to hear these kind of messages, you had to go to some sort of weird bookstore downtown where they sold foreign magazines, whereas now, on Twitter, bots can be used to flood any Twitter stream with their messages of hate.

HARI SREENIVASAN: Well, Mark, let’s a little bit talk about the presence of the Antifa, the sort of increased presence of folks who are more aggressive in wanting to push back here than the predominantly peaceful counterprotesters that were there.

MARK SCIALLA: Sure.

So, Hari, Antifa has been around at least since the ’80s. Antifa is short for anti-fascists. And they have really got — they have come to prominence recently in the national conversation because they have been the ones who have been at the forefront of these alt-right rallies.

And their message is basically that toy way to confront these groups is by getting in their faces, is by showing up in force and not allowing them to have or hold public space, because if you really carry out the rhetoric of white supremacist logic to its end, it’s genocide. And they don’t think that it’s acceptable to allow them to organize.

HARI SREENIVASAN: All right, Mark Scialla, P.J. Tobia, thanks for your reporting this weekend.

MARK SCIALLA: Thanks, Hari.

HARI SREENIVASAN: We will take a closer look at the issues coming out of Charlottesville, including the connection between Civil War statues and the current protest movements, and we will discuss the swell of reaction to President Trump in our Politics Monday segment later in the program.

At This Point In His Presidency, Obama’s Biggest Scandal Was Using Dijon Mustard

As President Donald Trump continues to erode American democracy, you can at least take comfort in knowing he isn’t using Dijon mustard on his burgers.

In May 2009, Fox News host Sean Hannity devoted airtime on his show to a frank, honest conversation about whether then-President Barack Obama was capable of leading the country. His biggest issue was that America could not trust a president that uses Dijon mustard on his food.

“Take a look at [Obama] ordering his burger with a very special condiment,” Hannity said on his program at the time, before showing a clip of POTUS at a Virginia restaurant.

“I’m gonna have your very basic cheddar cheeseburger, medium-well,” Obama told the cashier. “I just want mustard, no ketchup. You got a spicy mustard or something like that? Dijon mustard or something?”

“I hope you enjoyed that fancy burger,” Hannity shot back.

Eight years later, the U.S. now has a president who has bragged about sexually assaulting women, is accused of colluding with Russia to help him win an election, golfs more than he leads, ignores climate change evidence, and petulantly shoves world leaders when he doesn’t get to be the center of attention.

Oh, he also eats his steaks well-done with ketchup.

It’s unclear why Hannity’s investigation never led to the removal of President Obama, but at least the American people can finally rest assured that these types of scandals are finally over.

No One Can Object That Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Collars Are On Point

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an all-knowing beacon of knowledge, level-headedness and yes, even fashion expertise.

She has long been known for the lace collars or jabots (a fancy collar) she pairs with her robe. Since taking her oath of office in 1993, they have at times been long, short, lacy, sparkly and even blue.

The collars make more than just a fashion statement. Take her dissent collar, for example, which is worn to show disagreement and, according to NBC News, “stray from the majority opinion on decisions before the high court”. Many took notice when she wore that very collar one day after Donald Trump, with whom she does not exactly have the best relationship, won the election, even though there were no decisions to be made that day.

Duly noted, RBG.

In honor of the iconic justice’s 84th birthday on March 15, we invite you to take a look back at some of her most collar-fully fantastic moments.

The Point That Everyone Is Missing With This Trump Photo Controversy

On Friday, the internet all but ecstatically quaked over side-by-side photos posted by Observer writer Dana Schwartz.

The image showed two photos of President Trump bidding farewell to the Obamas as they boarded a helicopter on their way out of the White House. Schwartz claimed that the new commander-in-chief’s hands had been digitally enlarged in the official White House version.

Because she used two different photos that were taken from two different angles and distances, the original tweet wasn’t terribly convincing.

That didn’t stop the internet from becoming “CSI: Twitter.”

People used overlays and animations to prove or disprove the theory that the White House photo was doctored. In the end, though, it appeared not to have been altered, and the whole frenzy amounted to a silly internet brain fart.

But isn’t this missing the point?

Is this what American Photoshopping has amounted to? This isn’t Russia, where people photoshop tiny watches off wrists, nor is it North Korea, where the government adds missile capabilities it doesn’t have to appear more menacing.

This is America, motherf**kers. And American exceptionalism doesn’t stop at visual reality.

Let’s say that, hypothetically, President Trump had his hands Photoshopped to appear bigger in photos. Is that the best we can hope for from our leaders?

We at HuffPost Comedy believe we can do a hell of a lot better to show the world how f**king great America is, both outside and in Photoshop.

Now this is more like the photos red-blooded Americans want to see hanging in the White House.

Lena Dunham Just Made A Super Important Point About Mental Health

Lena Dunham has an important reminder about your psychological well-being and this time it’s about burnout.

The actress recently spoke to Glamour magazine about the intense pressure she put on herself when her show “Girls” began.

“Making my deal with HBO as a 23-year-old woman, I felt that I had so much to prove,” she said. “I felt like I had to be the person who answered emails the fastest, stayed up the latest, worked the hardest.”

Dunham revealed that she often gave up rest and moments to recharge in an effort to make it seem like she was deserving of her opportunity.

“As much as I loved my job, I really, like, injured myself in some ways. If I had felt like, ‘You’re worthy of eight hours of sleep, not four; you’re worthy of turning your phone off on a Saturday,’ I don’t think it would have changed the outcome of the show,” she said. “But I could have worked with a sense of joy and excitement, rather than guilt and anxiety of being ‘found out.’”

I could have worked with a sense of joy and excitement, rather than guilt and anxiety of being ‘found out.’

Falling into this trap isn’t unique to Dunham. Research shows that excessive stress can put individuals at an increased risk for chronic disease and stroke. Burnout is a real issue, regardless of your career. A demanding schedule, 24/7 access to email and working multiple jobs to make ends meet can all be contributing factors.

This is particularly true for women, who are more likely to deal with the imposter syndrome Dunham describes (for good reason: women are assumed to be less competent and held to higher standards, according to research). Women also often deal with the cultural expectation that they must manage the home in addition to their work responsibilities and studies show that this (misguided) norm can take a toll on a woman’s psychological well-being. For example, women are more likely than male counterparts to bend their careers to fit in family life, which can increase stress and burnout.

Dunham offered this advice for women who constantly feel a need to run themselves into the ground in order to prove their worth: Your wellness should always come first.

“There will be nothing if you don’t look out for you,” she said. “And I can’t wait, on my next project, to go into it with the strength that comes from, like, valuing your own body and your own mental health.”

That’s a life goal anyone can get behind.

Groomed: From Proposal to Vows, Wedding Planning and an Engagement from a Groom’s Point of View.

Groomed: From Proposal to Vows, Wedding Planning and an Engagement from a Groom’s Point of View.

A billion industry hinges on two terrified people investing their lives into answering four simple words: Will You Marry Me? Once the catalyst begins, however, their relationship becomes an afterthought to the thousands of decisions made planning the wedding. There are more than 2 million weddings each year in the United States. Wedding magazines reach circulations in the hundreds of thousands, and wedding guides, tips and how-to books line the shelves of bookstores to tell couples how to plan the best wedding. But what about planning for the marriage? What happens to the relationship before a couple says their vows? "Groomed" is a story not just about wedding planning, but the relationship of an engaged couple from proposal to vows, all told from a groom’s perspective. It’s 14 months of flower arrangements and guest list bloopers, and a humorous commentary that anyone who’s ever been a part of the wedding process can relate to. A couple in limbo for more than a year, a family adjusting to new members, friends watching their relationships change as a wedding nears. Getting down on one knee is merely the beginning.

Reese Witherspoon Cites New Yorker Article As Low Point In Her Career

The Reese-urgence is alive and well with the much-anticipated release of “Wild” and the probability of an impending Oscar nomination. It’s arguable that Reese Witherspoon never truly lost her status as one of America’s sweethearts, but, she says in a new “60 Minutes” interview, the year after her Oscar win for “Walk the Line” was “tough.”

Throughout the press she has done for her role as Cheryl Strayed, who hiked the Pacific Crest Trail to ameliorate the pain following her mother’s death, Witherspoon has said she wanted to break away from the post-Oscar films that boxed her into nice-girl romantic comedies — movies like “Four Christmases,” “How Do You Know” and “This Means War’. The nadir came when Witherspoon saw herself listed among “washed-up” actors who were no longer seen as box-office draws in a 2012 article from The New Yorker.

“I thought I was reading, like, a profile on another actor,” she recalled. “Then somewhere down at the end, it said […] ‘the people who are washed-up.’ I mean, it really hurt my feelings.” (To be fair, the piece Witherspoon is presumably referring to — a profile of Ben Stiller — never uses the term “washed-up.” Regardless, she was named alongside Keanu Reeves, Mel Gibson, Demi Moore, Tom Hanks, Russell Crowe, Nicolas Cage and John Travolta.)

As she’s said several times, Witherspoon challenged herself to find stronger roles, which led to the creation of her production company, Pacific Standard. With Australian producer Bruna Papandrea, Witherspoon has fought to get powerful female stories on the big screen. First up was “Gone Girl,” which she produced. Then came “Wild,” which she optioned in March 2012, three months before Oprah Winfrey selected it as the inaugural entry in her Book Club 2.0.

“I was just kind of floundering career-wise. I wasn’t making things I was passionate about,” Witherspoon said. “And it was really clear that audiences weren’t responding to anything I was putting out there.”

Audiences are paying attention now: “Wild” has received remarkable praise, and it made a strong mark at the box office when the movie opened in limited release on Dec. 5.

Witherspoon’s full “60 Minutes” interview with Charlie Rose airs Sunday on CBS. Watch an excerpt:
