Member of First All-Black Group to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro Recounts Feat in Fascinating Blog Post

In June, a group of black travelers scaled 19,341 feet to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The adventure was organized by Outdoor Afro, a “network that celebrates and inspires African American connections and leadership in nature,” according to its website.

One of the hikers, Leandra Taylor, provides an account of the experience to wellandgood.com. Here is an excerpt:

“We were headed to the Lava Tower [15,000 feet] that day, and the hike was finally catching up to me. This was one of our longer hikes and the distance that we were planning on going should have taken us 4-6 hours, but at the 7 hour mark, we were only about half way. I was on my period, so I felt cramp-y and emotional during our lunch break, but I was also just physically exhausted.

Eventually, we had to descend a rock wall, and it was a worst-case scenario for me because of my fear of heights. When I tried to get down, I could feel a panic attack brewing: I thought, ‘I could lose my footing and fall down.’ All of my teammates were well aware of my anxiety by this point, and they were just behind me and supporting me. But as the light started to die down, I was getting more and more panicked. I just kept repeating to myself, ‘I am strong. My body’s strong. My legs are strong.’ I ended up making it to camp, and setting up my tent with the help of my troop.”

The team’s rigorous expedition schedule is on Outdoor Afro’s site:

Day 1:  Pick up from the Kilimanjaro Airport and drive to hotel in Arusha.

Day 2: Set off climbing gently through the south-western slopes of the mountain. This is old growth montane forest, carpeted with unique “busy lizzie” flowers, begonias and ferns. First camp among the giant heather at 9840 feet. A 3,936 foot ascent and six hours walking.

Day 3: Emerge from the forest into the giant heather zone and onto fine open moorland. There are fascinating geological features in the old volcanic caldera. After 3,000 foot ascent and 4-6 hours walking, the team will arrive at camp 2 by the Shira Cave at 12,500 feet.

Day 4: On this day, the team will climb to almost 16,000 feet, but will end the day around the same elevation they started. This helps with acclimatization.  They will climb towards the main peak Kibo, with the western glaciers clearly visible across the rugged high-altitude desert of volcanic rocks and boulders.

Day 5: Climb steep to the Barranco wall with some sections of very easy scrambling and then drop down again to the Karanga Valley.

Day 6: Climb above Barafu Hut perched high on a rocky bluff at 15,580 feet. There will be fantastic views of Mawenzi peak in the distance.

Day 7: An early 2-3 a.m. alpine start to climb the steep frozen scree. They will aim to reach Stella point at 18,600 feet, on the crater rim for a rest and hopefully sunrise, then continue another hour to the highest point on the continent at 19,345 feet; usually in warm sunshine.

Day 8: A descent of approximately 4,600 feet  and 4-5 hours through the forest to Mweka Gate.

One of the hikers spoke with ABC News about how he prepared for the daunting climb. “I would go on 6.5 to 10.5-mile hikes carrying packs with weights on my back once per week,” said Olatunde (Ola) Gholahan.

The number of black people traveling has steadily increased the last several years. Millennials of color are particularly interested in exploring the farthest reaches of the globe. Several travel startups have emerged; many of them catering to Millennial wanderlust.

Evita Turquoise Robinson is the the 34-year-old founder of Nomadness, an organization with the purpose to “show the world that travel has no racial, gender, religious, economic, or interest limitations.” The Nomadness community is 20,000 members strong across social media.

Sister Traveling Solo is a company founded by Coleitha Banks to assist and encourage women of color to travel solo. Haywire Weekend is a luxury travel site targeted to diverse Millennials.

Review: The Miseducation of Cameron Post Skewers Conversion Therapy, Gently

The idea of conversion therapy is so inhumane that it could be some alien race’s idea of a sick joke. Bad enough that it actually exists; the fact that it’s generally put to use out of religious convictions elevates it to a sin of supreme arrogance. People who won’t come right out and say, “We don’t like you the way you are” feel perfectly comfortable saying, “God doesn’t like you the way you are”—as if they’re in any position to know.

God probably likes The Miseducation of Cameron Post, or at least the idea of it: Chloë Grace Moretz plays Cameron, a high-schooler growing up in the early 1990s somewhere in Bible Belt America. Cameron does normal high-school things, like going on a double date to the school prom. But it also appears that she’s in love with her closest friend, Coley (Quinn Shepard): The movie’s early moments telegraph the tender, exploratory carnality of their relationship. But when they sneak away from the dance and get caught together in the backseat of a car, it’s Cameron, and not her prom-queen friend Coley, who pays the price: She’s sent off to a special school called God’s Promise, run by an “ex-gay,” Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr.), and his supremely uptight sister Lydia (Jennifer Ehle). (“She de-gayed him,” is the whispered lore swirling around the brother-sister duo.) Ostensibly, this is a place where Cameron’s head—and everything else—can be put right.

Conversion therapy was a hot-button issue in the 1990s; it’s less talked about today, though the concept certainly hasn’t gone away. The Miseducation of Cameron Post—directed by Desiree Akhavan (who previously made the 2014 feature Appropriate Behavior) and adapted from Emily M. Danforth’s novel—is set squarely in its time. Yet it doesn’t feel like a period piece. You stop thinking of the God’s Promise detainees as misunderstood gay kids and more as misunderstood kids, period: Most of them feel pretty comfortable in their own skin; it’s the cloistered world around them that fails to accept them as they are.

That actually presents some story-structure problems: The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a fairly tame picture. A horrific off-camera event introduces some tension, but its impact feels indistinct and diffuse rather than wrenching. Still, these kids get to you. Moretz plays Cameron as a young woman who knows her own mind, refusing to let it be reshaped—but she also suggests how long-term defensiveness can cause a kind of internal bruising that doesn’t always show. Sasha Lane and Forrest Goodluck are terrific as the two fellow God’s Promise inmates who become her friends. Lane’s character, Jane Fonda—the name could be an affectation, or maybe not—is a firecracker who stashes weed in her prosthetic leg. Goodluck’s Adam Red Eagle is a marvelous deadpan comedian who takes everything in stride, silently defying Lydia when she harangues him for failing to keep his gorgeous mane of hair out of his face. One day, having had enough, she finally shaves it off: His stubbly head only makes the mutinous glare in his eyes more evident. The Miseducation of Cameron Post may not hit as hard as it should. But it at least suggests that the only real losers in life are those who presume to read God’s mind.

ENTERTAINMENT DEAL UPDATE:

Here’s the Instagram Post That Got Ryan Lochte Suspended for a Doping Violation

For anyone else, the post would have been pretty innocuous — a couple receiving IV drips while lounging on plush leather chairs.

But for Olympic athletes, the act is a violation of strict U.S. Anti-Doping (USADA) policies that prohibit IV infusions, even of legal substances, if it’s not related to a hospitalization or directly approved by USADA.

Danielle Eurich, social media and media relations specialist with USADA, confirmed that the post below, which Lochte uploaded in May, launched a USADA investigation that resulted in a 14 month suspension from competitions. Lochte, a 12-time Olympic medalist, captioned the picture with “Athletic recovery with some #ivdrip @revivalivlounge #vitamins.”

Lochte appears to have deleted the post from his social media.

The post included a tag for Revival IV Lounge, which advertises itself on Instagram as “Gainesville’s premier IV Hydration Wellness Lounge,” offering IV drips for hangovers, energy, beauty and chronic illness. A person who answered the phone at Revival IV Lounge declined to comment on whether Lochte had received infusions there or was paid to promote the business on social media.

In its announcement of Lochte’s suspension, USADA says “Lochte received an intravenous infusion of permitted substances at an infusion clinic in a volume greater than 100 ml in a 12-hour period without a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Intravenous infusions of injections in a volume greater than 100 ml within a 12-hour period are prohibited at all times — except for those legitimately received in the course of hospital treatment, surgical procedures or clinical diagnostic investigations…” Lochte was not receiving the infusion during a hospitalization nor had he received an exemption from USADA.

At a press conference in Fort Lauderdale on Monday, Lochte told reporters the infusion was a B vitamin complex. “I wasn’t taking anything illegal. Everything was legal. You can get it at CVS, Walgreens, but there are rules, and you have to obey them.”

Lochte recently completed another U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Swimming-imposed suspension for his activities during the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero. Following his meets, Lochte and several other U.S. Olympic swimmers vandalized a Rio gas station and initially claimed they had been robbed at gunpoint. Lochte later admitted his story was “exaggerated.”

In 2016, Lochte was suspended for 10 months, and lost major sponsors, including Speedo and Ralph Lauren. He only just returned to competition last year, and was planning on competing at the upcoming U.S. national swimming championships in Irvine, California.

More: Ryan Lochte Has Never Played by the Rules

That won’t happen, since USADA banned him from swimming in competitions through July 2019, starting in May, when the picture was posted.

Lochte was focusing his efforts on returning to Olympic swimming in Tokyo in 2020, and during his earlier suspension got married and became a father to son Caiden. “It’s a hard sanction because I wasn’t taking anything illegal, but a rule is a rule. I wasn’t too clear on the rules, but now I am.”

He said Monday he remained committed to swimming at the Olympics again. “Don’t worry. I’m not giving up. I’m going to keep going.”

Quick Picks: Post Nordstrom Half Yearly Further Markdowns

Nordstrom: Extra Savings on SOME Half-Yearly Items

Patience pays off. Sometimes. It pays off if they still have it in the size and color you were after, and, if it happens to be in the batch of items that have received additional discounts since the massive Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale ended yesterday.

But, lots of stuff has sold out (or, all but) and not everything has seen additional cuts. That’s why we combed back through the massive pack of on-sale goods at Nordstrom to see what’s gotten further cuts. Some of what was 40%-50% off is now 50%-60% off. And it still ships and returns for free. Picks below are limited to items that have been marked down further, and somehow still have at least a decent size selection at post time. But that can change. Quick.

JKT Trim Fit Stretch Cotton Blazer – $ 159.20 ($ 398)

JKT Trim Fit Stretch Cotton Blazer

Was $ 198.98. Italian cotton with some stretch woven in for comfort. And speaking of comfort, it’s just partially lined. Was almost $ 200 during the sale. Now just under $ 160.

Wood & Faulk Waxed Canvas USA Made Duffel – $ 194.49 ($ 389)

Wood & Faulk Waxed Canvas USA Made Duffel

Was $ 233.40. Seems like a steal at this price. Made in the USA of hearty materials. Dimensions are 21”W x 14”H x 6 1/2”D. Yes, it does come with a shoulder strap too.

To Boot New York Dreyfus Cap Toe Monk Shoe – $ 168.75 ($ 375)

To Boot New York Dreyfus Cap Toe Monk Shoe

Was $ 209.90. Plenty of eye catching details here. Also available in black. Made in Italy. I do believe the soles are stitched, but they aren’t Goodyear. Blake I think?

Bonobos Capstone Slim Fit Wool Dinner Jacket & Pant – $ 499.96 ($ 1000)

Bonobos Capstone Slim Fit Wool Dinner Jacket and Pants

Was $ 599.96. Okay. Now we’re talking. Still, not cheap. Hardly. But this is another Bonobos option from their upgraded “Capstone” line. And hey, wedding season is here. Sold as suit separates. A surprisingly large number of sizes left.

Select Ledbury Sport & Dress Shirts – $ 72.49 – $ 92.49 ($ 145 – $ 165)

Ledbury

Was $ 86.98 – $ 109.90. Further reductions on super expensive shirts that more than a few of us are addicted to. Not a lot of wheelhouse stuff (like solids) but still worth a quick browse if you’re a Ledbury fan. Sizes are real scattered.

The Rail Tempe Chukka – $ 53.96 ($ 89.95)

The Rail Tempe Chukka

Including this here because while I don’t think it’s further marked down (at least I don’t think it is?) it didn’t make it into the original Nordstrom sale post. Twas a late/last minute addition to the sale… methinks. Anyway, price sure is right. And don’t underestimate the versatility of gray suede chukkas.

JKT Trim Fit Windowpane Linen Sport Coat – $ 191.20 ($ 478)

JKT Trim Fit Windowpane Linen Sport Coat

Was $ 238.98. Easy, soft linen. And thankfully, it looks like they kept the structure and the lining to a minimum. Could be a real winner in the upcoming heat?

Wood & Faulk Carpenter Waxed Canvas Bag – $ 142.49 ($ 285)

Wood & Faulk Carpenter Waxed Canvas Bag

Was $ 170.98. Not bad for a waxed canvas w/ leather accents made in the USA bag. Dimensions are 13”W x 11”H x 6”D. And yes, it does come with a shoulder strap too.

Bonobos Straight Leg Stretch Washed Chinos – $ 48.98 ($ 98)

Bonobos Straight Leg Stretch Washed Chinos

Was $ 58.40. Now a full 50% off. Sizes are scattered depending on what color you’re after. Not their original, 100% cotton wheelhouse pant, but instead their version with 2% stretch added for comfort.

Nordstrom Check Dress Shirts in Trim or Extra Trim Fit – $ 19.49 ($ 39)

Nordstrom Check Dress Shirts

Was $ 29.90. Multiple color schemes here in two fits. Note that these don’t appear to be the “easy care” shirts, so, you’ll have to be handy with an iron.

Clarks Desert Peak Chelseas – $ 70 ($ 140)

Clarks Desert Peak Chelseas

Was originally part of the sale, then was taken out of the sale, and is now back in because it’s being price matched again. I think this might be the “beeswax” brown leather that Clarks uses? Crepe sole here.

Sand Trim Fit Plaid Linen & Wool Sport Coat – $ 259.98 ($ 650)

Sand Trim Fit Plaid Linen & Wool Sport Coat

Was $ 324.98. Fully lined this time. Made in Portugal. 60% linen, 40% virgin wool. That plaid should look great for nights out during the warmer weather. EU sizes here, so subtract 10 to get the normal US size (so if it’s an EU48, that’s 38 here in the states).

Ted Baker Swipes Duffel – $ 142.49 ($ 285)

Ted Baker Swipes Duffel

Didn’t catch this one the first time around. I think it’s a new addition? That’s one sleek looking modern duffel. Weather resistant exterior with what appears to be Saffiano (or Saffiano-like?) leather or faux leather trim. Dimensions are 19”W x 12”H x 10”D.

1901 Cardiff Plain Toe Derby – $ 54.98 ($ 110)

1901 Cardiff Plain Toe Derby

Was $ 76.90. A good casual shoe to wear with chinos and a polo in the heat. Which is either hear, or, quickly approaching. Darn summer.

Barbour “Helm” Quilted Jacket – $ 99.49 ($ 199)

Barbour "Helm" Quilted Jacket

Was $ 119.40. A shorter, bomber like quilted jacket from Barbour. Three colors to pick from, including that not-so normal light grey seen above left. Now an extra $ 20 off compared to the half-yearly price.

Bonobos Capstone Slim Fit Plaid Wool Blend Sport Coat – $ 349.98 ($ 700)

Bonobos Capstone Slim Fit Plaid Wool Blend Sport Coat

Was $ 419.98. From their high end “Capstone” collection. Remember, part of the Bonobos “slim” fit, as opposed to their standard, is cutting the tail a little shorter. So if you don’t like that look, move on.

Nordstrom Smartcare Trim Fit Solid Dress Shirt – $ 34.75 ($ 69.50)

Nordstrom Smartcare Trim Fit Solid Dress Shirt

Was $ 39.90. Solid but with a bit of a micro diamond texture to the weave. Neck and sleeve sizing. A basic, but a basic that every guy needs.

Sand Sportcoat in Wool/Cotton/Linen – $ 259.98 ($ 650)

Sand Sportcoat in Wool/Cotton/Linen

Was $ 324.98. Full disclosure. I don’t have any direct experience with this brand. So I couldn’t tell you if this thing is half canvas or fused. Made in Portugal though. Lots of potential here.

J&M 1850 Allister Sneaker – $ 65.25 ($ 145)

J&M 1850 Allister Sneaker

Was $ 89.90. Another alternative to the perpetually sold out J. Crew Nike Killshot. Kinda like the logo free, ultra clean look here too. Word is they run large. Nice reviews. Was going for closer to $ 90 during the sale.

Nordstrom Flat Front 100% Wool Trousers – $ 79.49 ($ 159)

Nordstrom Flat Front 100% Wool Trousers

Was $ 94.90. (Clears throat.) Oh, you want an encore? Sing it with me now… Work pannnnts! Work pannnnts! WORK PANNNNNTS. Da na na na na na na na na… WORK PANTS!

Hex Tote Bag – $ 49.96 ($ 99.95)

Hex Tote Bag

Was $ 59.96. There are worse looking, less functional ways to get your stuff back and forth to the beach. Now another ten bucks off.

Florsheim Classico Double Monk – $ 101.59 ($ 190)

Florsheim Classico Double Monk

A new addition to the sale section. Price matched. These are NOT almost $ 200 shoes. They are closer to $ 100 shoes. They’re nice for a hundred bucks. Leather is a little stiff, but not terrible for a hundred bucks. Toe might be a bit pointy for more conservative tastes.

Kenya Moore Shares A Pregnancy-Related Post & Disables Comments After Haters Made Her Delete The Baby Bump Pic

But, unfortunately, after lots of haters left her horrible comments accusing her of faking her pregnancy, Kenya decided to take the baby bump pic down.

Now, she has another pregnancy-related post, but this time she made sure to disable the comments s that no more haters insult her and her family.

You can see the latest emotional post below and read the story that it shares.

#God

A post shared by Kenya Moore (@thekenyamoore) on

This comes right after, Kenya had another message for her fans just the other day that she posted on the same social media account.

That message was supposed to help us feel encouraged and have more faith that good things will come for everyone. As we already said, she also deleted her baby bump pic after haters slammed her.

‘Keep dreaming God has your back. #god #love #peace’ Kenya captioned her latest post.

‘This speaks volumes to my spirit brought tears to my eyes THANK YOUR LORD I needed this inspiration!!!🖤🖤🖤’ one of her followers told Kenya.

‘U took ur belly photo down 😢 don’t let them haters get to u. Just shut off the comments,’ a disappointed fan noticed and advised Kenya not to care so much about the haters and their messages. It seems that she took the fan’s advice and shut down the comments.

We really hope that Kenya enjoys her pregnancy and has enough strength to not care about the haters and what they’re saying regarding her pregnancy.

What’s the secret to Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel‘s happy relationship? According to “Like I Love You” singer, it may be because Beil’s always there to support him.

On Saturday, Timberlake, 37, shared a sweet Instagram showing his wife of five years embracing him from behind.

“She’s got my back,” he wrote in the post’s caption.

Just last month, Biel gave love to her husband in a video on Twitter, cheering him on from the stands of Toronto’s Air Canada Centre as he kicked off his Man of the Woods world tour.

“There’s nothing better than watching your man do what they’ve been put on this earth to do,” The Sinner star, 36, captioned a video of Timberlake performing his hit “Mirrors” — even sticking out her tongue for the camera after watching him walk by. “I’m so proud of you, man of the woods!”

The duo tied the knot back on Oct. 19, 2012 at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia, Italy.

“It was magical. It was an unforgettable evening,” Timberlake told PEOPLE exclusively at the time.

“It was a fantasy,” Biel also shared.

“To my beautiful Jess: You have taught me so much about what a true love means. I can’t put into words what these last five years have meant to me, so… ‘Listen to the melody ‘cause my love is in there hiding,’ ” he concluded, along with the hashtag #Happy5thAnniversaryWifey.

On Instagram, he posted the same video and ended his post with an adorable shot of himself sharing a smooch with Biel.

“My tender heart is yours, now until forever,” Biel replied.

The True Story Behind The Post

The feverishly debated decision behind The Washington Post‘s 1971 publication of top-secret information in the Pentagon Papers comes to life in the new movie The Post, in which Meryl Streep plays legendary publisher Katharine Graham and Tom Hanks takes on the role of the gruff but brilliant executive editor Ben Bradlee.

As Graham, Streep plays a leader who decides to publish the incendiary information about the Vietnam War amid great pressure, in both directions, from government officials, her lawyers and her own employees.

The papers fell into the Washington Post‘s hands at a delicate time. The New York Times, which first reported on the papers, had been temporarily banned from publishing the information, which exposed that the government had repeatedly lied to the public about progress in the Vietnam War. Editors at the Post had a small window of time to jump on the story. President Nixon and his administration fought hard to keep the information from going public, even taking the case to the Supreme Court.

Here’s what The Post gets right (and wrong) about the newspaper’s role in the publication of the Pentagon Papers.

Daniel Ellsberg was working for the RAND corporation when he decided to leak the Pentagon Papers.

Ellsberg, played in the movie by Matthew Rhys, worked as a military analyst for the RAND corporation, where he repeatedly snuck out classified military documents to photocopy over three months in 1969. He would copy the documents and return the originals the next day, and in 1971 he sent 7,000 pages exposing the government’s lies about the Vietnam War to the New York Times.

For this, Ellsberg became the first person to be prosecuted under the 1917 Espionage Act and faced 115 years in prison. Charges were dropped, however, in a mistrial when it came to light that the government had illegally spied on the whistleblower.

Ellsberg has since gone on to become an activist decrying government secrecy. He recently published the book The Doomsday Machine, a revealing account of America’s nuclear program in the 1960s.

The Washington Post was in the process of becoming a publicly traded company at the time of the leak.

Katharine Graham noted in a 1997 interview with NPR that The Washington Post was in a vulnerable position during the time she decided to publish the Pentagon Papers because it was in the process of going public.

“We had announced our plans and not sold the stock,” Graham said. “So we were particularly liable to any kind of criminal prosecution from the government.”

In the film, this fact weighs heavily on Graham, who has taken leadership of the paper following her husband’s suicide. On top of the legal risks, publishing the papers posed a potentially existential threat to the newspaper.

When Post journalists received the papers, they were out of order with no page numbers.

As depicted in the movie, Post reporters really did camp out in Ben Bradlee’s library to go through the papers — which were not exactly organized efficiently. The complete Pentagon Papers were declassified in 2011, making them fully available online for the first time. The Washington Post reported in 2011 that the leaked versions of the papers that it and the New York Times received were heavily redacted, incomplete or illegible.

Katharine Graham was hosting a party on the night she decided to publish the Papers.

In her 1997 memoir Personal History, Graham wrote that she was hosting a party for a departing employee and was in the middle of delivering a toast, just like in the movie, when she was called to the telephone to make the call on whether to publish the papers. After much debate — and, as in the film, finally realizing the decision lay with her alone — Graham said, “Go go ahead, go ahead. Let’s go. Let’s publish.”

Graham was known for throwing great parties, attended by friends including high-ranking government officials like Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. (Whether she was wearing a gold caftan as fabulous as the one Streep sports in the movie is difficult to ascertain.)

The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the Post.

The Supreme Court sided with the news when it ruled in favor of the Post and the New York Times publishing the top-secret information in the Pentagon Papers. In a six-to-three vote, the court ruled that the government did not adequately prove that it had the right to bar the newspapers from publishing the classified history of the Vietnam War on the claim that it was a national security risk.

President Nixon did not ban the Washington Post from the White House after the newspaper published the Pentagon Papers.

While the publication of the Pentagon Papers angered Nixon after his national security adviser Henry Kissinger told him the leaks made him seem like a “weakling,” the former president did not ban Post reporters from the White House for reporting on them. Later, when the Post‘s reporting on the Watergate scandal gained steam, Nixon began barring reporters from covering social events at the White House — although the journalists still had their press credentials. In the movie, this ban comes earlier, when Hanks, as Bradlee, is trying to figure out how to cover one of the First Daughters’ nuptials, given that his reporters are banned from attending.

Gabby Douglas Apologizes for Saying Women Should Dress ‘Modestly’ in Response to Post About Sexual Assault

Gymnast Gabby Douglas has apologized for saying women are responsible for dressing “modestly” in response to her Olympic teammate Aly Raisman‘s social media post about sexual assault.

Raisman on Friday wrote that men don’t have the right the “shame or not believe” women who come forward about sexual abuse just because they might have participated in a “sexy photoshoot” or wore a “sexy outfit” previously.

“Women are allowed to feel sexy and comfortable in their own skin, in fact I encourage you all to wear what you feel good in,” Raisman wrote. “I will not put up with any woman or girl being shamed for wanting to wear a skirt, dress, etc. I do not tolerate it.”

Following Raisman’s statement on victim shaming, Douglas weighed in with the opinion that “it is our responsibility as women to dress modestly and be classy.”

“Dressing in a provocative/sexual way entices the wrong crowd,” she wrote in a since-deleted tweet, prompting immediate reaction and criticism.

Teammate Simone Biles tweeted: “Shocks me that i’m seeing this but it doesn’t surprise me… honestly seeing this brings me to tears bc as your teammate I expected more from you & to support her.”

After deleting her initial tweet, Douglas apologized, saying, “I didn’t correctly word my reply.”

“I am deeply sorry for coming off like i don’t stand alongside my teammates,” Douglas tweeted. “Regardless of what you wear, abuse under any circumstance is never acceptable.”

Raisman’s post comes after she became the latest in a string of high-profile gymnasts to accuse former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse.

Nassar is currently awaiting sentencing in Michigan after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of sexually abusing his former patients and a family friend.

A lawyer for Nassar told TIME earlier this month that a gag order in his pending case prevented him from commenting on Raisman’s allegations.

High School Student Beaten Up After Racist Snapchat Post

Snapchat

A high schooler who “joked” about whipping slaves on Snapchat got his own butt whipped on Thursday.

Last week, the Buchanan High School student of Fresno, CA made light of slavery on Snapchat. In the post, the boy and his peers pretended they were slave-owners. One of the posts read, “I caught my house n**ger looking at chevys on Craigslist so I lynched him and his kids.” The message was accompanied by a picture of a slaveholder whipping a slave.

The Snapchat pics gained national attention and the boy was reprimanded by his schoolIt’s not yet clear whether he was placed in in school suspension or was told to stay home as a consequence for the racist posts.

But when he returned to school this week, what is clear is that he was in for an a** whipping.

A video showed a Black student approaching the boy before swinging at the boy.

Hospital employees post disturbing images of newborn babies

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

This thing happened as soon as I gave birth: Every child in the world became my child, and their pain became mine.

It’s why I have a difficult time watching movies or shows where something bad happens to children. It’s why I sobbed so hard watching Lion that I cried through every napkin from the concession stand, every tissue in my purse, and finally used the hem of my skirt to wipe my eyes. And it’s why my body seethes with rage when I read stories that involve harm, neglect, or the complete disregard of children, like this.

Two staff members at a naval hospital have been removed after inappropriately handling newborn babies and sharing images on social media.

One employee at the Naval Hospital of Jacksonville posted unsettling photos of herself giving the middle finger to newborn babies, making them “dance” to music (specifically 50 Cent’s “In Da Club”), and referring to the children as “mini Satans” in one of the photo captions.
A screenshot of a hospital employee giving the middle finger to a baby with a caption that refers to the child as a "mini Satan."

The video of the incident has been removed from Snapchat and the profile of the corpsman who posted the video has been deactivated. Another corpsman allegedly participated in the incidents as well.

Screenshot from the video in which a corpsman holds a newborn upright and makes the child dance

The acts came to light when a military spouse discovered the photos and videos, shared them on Facebook, and reported them to the hospital administration.

The hospital responded with this statement on Facebook:

A screenshot of the hospital statement from Facebook

“Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s Commanding Officer sends: We are aware of a video / photos posted online. It’s outrageous, unacceptable, incredibly unprofessional, and cannot be tolerated. We have identified those involved — two staff (not nurses as reported on some sites). They have been removed from providing patient care and they will be handled by the legal system and military justice. We’ve notified the patient’s parents.”

Beyond the online outrage since the photos went viral, the two corpsmen could face severe consequences for these actions, according to a report from First Coast News.

Not only did these hospital employees likely violate HIPAA privacy rules and potentially put newborn babies at risk, they’ve also sowed distrust and suspicion among new parents, at a time when they are at their most vulnerable.

Is this not truly absurd behavior?

L’Oreal Paris Drops Its First Transgender Model For ‘All Whites Are Racist’ Post

L’Oréal Paris has severed ties with its first transgender spokesmodel after she faced criticism for remarks about institutional racism.

The brand announced Friday on Twitter that the comments made by Munroe Bergdorf were “at odds” with its values and had decided to end the campaign with her.

The decision came after British tabloid The Daily Mail reported on one of her Facebook posts.

“Honestly I don’t have energy to talk about the racial violence of white people anymore. Yes ALL white people,” she reportedly said. “Because most of yall don’t even realise or refuse to acknowledge that your existence, privilege and success as a race is built on the backs, blood and death of people of colour. Your entire existence is drenched in racism… Come see me when you realise that racism isn’t learned, it’s inherited and consciously or unconsciously passed down through privilege.”

That original post was deleted from her Facebook page, but Bergdorf later posted a message saying that her remarks had been taken out of context, and were in response to the recent violence in Charlottesville Va. “When I stated that ‘all white people are racist’, I was addressing that fact that western society as a whole, is a system rooted in white supremacy – designed to benefit, prioritise and protect white people before anyone of any other race,” she said.

Read in full below:

While some applauded her remarks against institutional racism, some accused her of being racist against white people and suggested that L’Oréal has gone against the diversity that it claims to uphold.

Bergdorf, who announced that she was the face of L’Oréal’s #YoursTruly campaign on Aug. 27, called on people to boycott the brand in the wake of her firing, saying: “Sit still and smile in a beauty campaign ‘championing diversity’. But don’t actually speak about the fact that lack of diversity and is due to racism. Or speak about the origins of racism. It’ll cost you your job.”

We don’t post that many J. Crew sales here because … well, they’re literally always having a sale. But this one is special. Take 30% off anything (literally anything) with the checkout code STF03M3.

As far as we can tell, the code doesn’t have any exclusions, which means you can use it on any of their third-party items. That includes everything from Alden shoes to Drake’s accessories to Barbour jackets to niche Japanese casualwear. For some reason, not all the items show up when you filter for brands in J. Crew’s “In Good Company” section, so browse around and do manual searches for the stuff you like.

If you’re looking value, check out J. Crew’s higher-end Wallace & Barnes line. The stuff is made better than the company’s mainline products (better fabrics, nicer detailing).

These sorts of codes pop up once in a blue moon. And if history is any indication, they can stop working unexpectedly. Worth taking a browse while you still can. Also, for lower priced items, you can use the codes STF03M5, STF03M6, and STF03M4. They’ll knock off a flat $ 25.

Viral post reminds us “life is way too short to say no all the time”

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Parenting

Some days it seems like I’m saying “no” to my kids an average of 100 times per hour. “No, you can’t have ice cream for breakfast.” “NO RUNNING IN THE HOUSE.” “No, you may not bounce that ball off your sister’s head.” “No, we’re not going to Chuck E. Cheese’s today.” “I said NO!!!”

Obviously, sometimes a big, fat “no” is warranted. But after reading one mom’s viral Facebook post, I’m rethinking my knee-jerk reaction.

Mom-of-two Rachel Carpenter recently shared two photos of her daughter, Nevaeh, sporting bright pink hair with the biggest smile on her face. In the powerful Facebook post, Carpenter explained why she allowed her 10-year-old to dye her hair such an eccentric color.

“Life is way to(o) short to say NO all of the time,” she wrote. “This time last year she asked me if she could have pink hair and I said no. A few days later at a camp they were doing a demonstration involving fire and something went wrong and it caught her on fire.”

Nevaeh ended up having terrible burns on more than 70 percent of her body. Her family wasn’t even sure if she would live, initially. But this little fighter pulled through. In the past year, she has endured surgery and a long journey of healing and recovery.

young girl with burns in hospital

“So this time when she asked me if she could have pink hair, I said yes,” Carpenter wrote. “That experience taught me you never know how much time you have left, with anymore. So say yes more often, and don’t care if anyone thinks your child with pink hair is ridiculous!! (within reason lol).”

Carpenter explained that she had originally rejected her daughter’s request for pink hair because Nevaeh was only 9 at the time, and she worried about what kinds of reactions it would get.

“Her accident made me realize tomorrow is not promised, no matter how young someone is,” she told BabyCenter. “Since then I have learned how extremely important is to pick your battles. Sometimes as parents, step parents, or any kind of guardian, we can feel overloaded with things our children ask for. It is just so important to not let that interfere with saying yes sometimes. Let your child live a little, something as simple as washable hair dye can make them extremely happy. I am so glad she is still here and had the chance to ask me that question again. So tell your child you love them as much as you can, hug them a little tighter and say yes (within reason) more often.”

girl with pink hair

With over 44,000 likes and more than 22,000 shares on Carpenter’s post so far, I think it’s safe to say people are loving this mom’s message and Nevaeh’s pink ‘do. I know I am (I might be a little biased, though; I’m currently rocking pink hair of my own.) So thank you, Rachel, for this inspiring reminder to say “yes” more often to my children. But I still think ice cream for breakfast is a really, really bad idea.

Do you find yourself saying “no” a millions times a day? What do you think of this mom’s message?

Ariel Winter Tackles Slut-Shaming In Poignant Instagram Post

Ariel Winter is back at it again with a body-positive message.

On June 8, the “Modern Family” star posted a powerful illustration on Instagram that shows exactly why slut-shaming women for what they’re wearing is so problematic ― and plain absurd. The artwork was originally created by The Equality Institute and appears to have been updated by Stephanie Nemmer. The Equality Institute is an organization fighting for gender equality and preventing violence against women.

Winter posted the illustration on Instagram, along with the hashtag #yourbodyisYOURS.

A post shared by ARIEL WINTER (@arielwinter) on

The illustration looks to be inspired by a 2013 photo taken by Canadian college student Rosea Lake that features a young woman’s legs with markings. Each marking reveals the varying judgements that are thrust upon women depending on their skirt length. The markings near the woman’s ankle and calf say “matronly” and “prudish,” while the markings that signal a shorter skirt read “whore,” “slut” and “asking for it.”

In the artwork Winter posted, all of these markings are crossed out to reveal a new statement that reads: “Someone that can do what the fuck ever they want with their body because skirt length does not correlate to how sexually available that person is regardless of how society teaches that we should be ashamed of our bodies.”

On June 6, Nemmer tweeted that she “fixed” the original illustration. The tweet shows the before and after of Nemmer’s “fix.”

As of Friday afternoon, Nemmer’s tweet had received over 36,000 retweets and 47,000 likes.

Viral Post Highlights The Body Image Messages Girls Get From Their Moms

A Missouri mom’s Facebook post is highlighting the way mothers can have an impact on their daughters’ relationships with body image.

On May 8, Brittney Johnson posted a photo of herself trying on a swimsuit in a Target fitting room with her 4-year-old daughter Payton.

In the caption, Johnson described the day she spent with her daughter, noting that Payton chatted with a barista at Starbucks, made sure to say “please” and “thank you” at dinner, complimented a stranger’s’ hair, high-fived the attendant at a carousel she rode and even gave her two extra ride tokens to another little girl.

At the end of the day, Johnson and her daughter went to Target, where the mom picked out some swimsuits to try on. As she tried them on, she sent photos to her friends to help make choices. During this process, she snapped the photo she shared in her Facebook post.

“See that sweet baby girl in the corner? With half a dress on and one of the bikini tops I had picked out?” Johnson wrote. “I stopped for a second to see what she would say and when she turned to the mirror, she said ‘Wow I just love cheetah print! I think I look beautiful! Do you think I look beautiful too?!’”

At that point, the mom said she realized the impact her words and actions have on her daughter.

“I tell her that she is beautiful every single day,” Johnson wrote. “She is kind walking through the mall, because I tell her she is kind everywhere else. She is polite at the order counter because she hears me when I’m polite to strangers everywhere. She gives compliments to people she doesn’t know because she loves how it feels when she hears them.”

Applying this realization to parenting, she added. “When we are in a dressing room, with swimsuits of all God forsaken things, there is a split moment when I have the power to say ‘wow I have really gotten fat this year’ OR ‘wow I love this coral color on me!’ And those are the words burned into my daughters brain.”

Johnson called on her fellow parents to be examples for their kids when it comes to manners, kindness and body image.

“I am not a size zero. I never will be. I have big thighs and a huge rump and for some reason the middle of my body gets more tan than the rest?” she wrote. “But this body made a whole other body. I am strong. I am able. And I am happy. I don’t have to be beautiful like you, because I am beautiful like me.”

She added, “And as my daughter gets older, and she faces judgement and criticism, I will always remind her that the girls who look the prettiest in a two piece, or a body suit, or a freaking Snuggie, are the ones who are happy. Because that’s ALL that matters. And I want her to look at herself every single day and say ‘Oh wow! I think I look beautiful!’ because EVERY girl deserves to feel that.”

Johnson’s post received over 227,000 likes. She told HuffPost she was touched by the overwhelming response and ability to connect with fellow parents. Many people reached out to say her post inspired them to stop saying negative things about themselves.

“It has been such a great reminder that we are all on the same team, have the same fears and ultimately want the same thing for our children ― love,” she said.

“For every mean comment that I’ve received about my body, I’ve received at least a thousand positive comments, and I have to say that gives me a little more faith in humanity than when I started,” the mom added.

Johnson said she’s become a strong proponent of self-love. “I’m a mom but I am a lot of other things too. I’m a friend and a woman, and I think that sometimes going through the motions of being a momma drowns out the time to be all of the other things too,” she told HuffPost, adding that she thinks it’s particularly important to teach young girls to love others and themselves.

“I hope people can read my post and then look at themselves and say, ‘Here I am, and I am beautiful just the way I am.’ I hope people take away from it that our kids should know self-love and will only learn it if we take the time to teach it to them,” Johnson said.

She added, “And no matter what kind of mom you are or what size, you are beautiful and have every right to feel like you are.”

This Post About Stretch Marks Nails The Way We Think About Our ‘Flaws’

A picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes it’s the caption that speaks directly to you.

Kenzie Brenna is an actress recovering from eating and body dysmorphic disorders who regularly preaches self-love to her 151,000 Instagram followers. At first glance, the photo she posted of her stomach last week might look like many others on her page. Her thought process, however, will resonate with anyone who’s struggled to find their confidence and maintain a positive body image.

The image shows what Brenna calls her “least favorite” body part ― the stretch marks on her stomach ― and her caption details the many thoughts she wrestles about them throughout a given day. They range from “they actually look kinda cool” to “you’d probably be more comfortable without them,” ultimately ending with the accurate conclusion that Brenna is perfect just the way she is, because “perfect isn’t a feeling.”

“They’re not usually this noticeable.”

“If you only had the money to get rid on them.”

“They actually look kinda cool. Sorta like a the beginning of a story.”

“More like the beginning of a LONG story.”

“Would I erase my story to not have these?”

“You’d probably be more comfortable without them.”

“Would I truly though?”

“Okay ask yourself the question.”

“I don’t wanna.”

“Just do it.”

“Does this affect the quality of who I am?”

“No.”

“Would it make you a better person if you got rid of these marks?”

“No.”

“Would it make you kinder, more generous and a better lover if you had the money to erase them?”

“No.”

“Then you’re perfect.”

“I don’t feel perfect.”

“That’s cause perfect isn’t a feeling.”

Brenna’s post is a reminder to us all that we don’t always need to feel 100 percent about anything in our lives or with our bodies, but that in time and with practice, appreciation gets a little bit easier.

“I PROMISE if you practice self-love, you will have more loving moments with yourself than you could ever dream of,” she wrote.

We’ll be bookmarking this promptly for our next off day, thank-you-very-much.

Patton Oswalt Reacts To Russian Hacking Revelation With No-Holds-Barred Post

Comedian Patton Oswalt has officially had enough with both Republicans and Democrats after the latest political scandal to erupt in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidential victory.

Following the release of a CIA report that concluded Russian hackers interfered with the election to help secure the White House for Trump, Oswalt shared a no-holds-barred post on Facebook expressing his disgust at the state of American politics.

“These newest revelations, that Russia hacked the election. Piles of evidence, teetering up to the sky. That Russia ALSO hacked the [Republican National Committee] and are holding them over a barrel because of what they know. Which would be hilarious if it wasn’t so frightening,” he wrote on Saturday.

“And the boiling chaos that’s resulting from it. I’ve got conservative friends actually DEFENDING Russia on this,” Oswalt continued. “I’ve got progressive friends gloating that we’ve finally had done to us what we’ve done to other countries. That Hillary somehow deserves this. That WE somehow deserve this. That infuriating cliche about, ‘It’s actually GOOD if Trump destroys everything it’ll start a revolution BLAH BLAH BLAH F**KING BLAH.’”

On Friday evening, Trump’s transition team dismissed the CIA report as a fabrication in a statement that also described the intelligence agency as “the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.”

“It’s time to move on and ‘Make America great again,’” the statement said.

But Oswalt, for one, is putting his foot down and refusing to normalize the president-elect, whom he likens to a “grope-y, racist uncle who just won $ 50,000 playing scratch-offs.”

“In the middle of it all is Trump ― bloated, grinning, oblivious, wearing his cheap baseball cap and ruining people’s lives with his Twitter,” Oswalt wrote. “While all around him ― smarter, better, exhausted people scramble around, trying to sweep up a china shop he keeps stumbling through, laughing the whole time at these stupid nerds picking up the broken pieces on the ground.”
