Meet Brittany K. Barnett And Miangel Cody, The Lawyers Behind Kim Kardashian’s Prison Reform Efforts

While Kim Kardashian receives all the praise for her work with the criminal justice system and the freeing of inmates, it’s two sistas, attorneys Brittany K. Barnett and MiAngel Cody, that are doing all the hard work behind-the-scenes to free non-violent offenders who are serving lengthy prison sentences.

Kardashian seems to be the face of America’s prison reform movement primarily because she’s putting her money behind Barnett and Cody’s efforts, The YBF reports.

The media portrays the reality star as being primarily responsible for helping to free Alice Marie Johnson from prison, but Barrnett had been working on Alice’s case for years through she and Cody’s “Buried Alive” project, which secured the great-grandmother’s release.

The Buried Alive Project aims to eliminate life without parole sentences for federal drug offenses. Barrett and Cody also run an organization called The Decarceration Collective, a non-profit law firm and consultancy that advocates for criminal justice reform, the report states.

Through their 90 Days of Freedom campaign, Barnett and Cody helped secure the release of 17 men and women from prison, but the media gave Kim all the credit because her cash funded the work to make this possible.

Brittany addressed their hard work being overshadowed by Kim. Peep her post below:

Brittany also had this to say about the Kardashian controversy to TMZ:

In total, Brittany and MiAngel have reportedly reduced/eliminated 37 life sentences.

“Took a few moments today to reflect on how honored we are to work side by side saving lives and linking up with some amazing people that support us along the way,” Brittant wrote on Facebook. “Our clients trust us with their lives and that is a privilege we do not take lightly. Together we have given a total of 37 life sentences back to the feds. We are just getting started. Me and my sis/co-counsel MiAngel Cody are back in the lab planning the next project! Doing it for the CULTURE, the CAUSE, and the CODE.”

Rapper Whose Show Ended In Shootout Sentenced To Prison

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A Tennessee rapper whose Arkansas performance ended in a shootout has been sentenced to five years in prison for carrying a gun during the show nearly two years ago.

More than two dozen people were injured during Ricky Hampton’s July 2017 performance at the Power Ultra Lounge in Little Rock. Hampton, who uses the stage name “Finese2Tymes,” pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and was sentenced Thursday.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that Hampton’s state sentence will begin after he finishes serving a five-year federal prison sentence for carrying a gun at a different Arkansas club.

His bodyguard, Kentrell Gwynn, pleaded guilty in March to a single count of aggravated assault for the Little Rock shooting and was sentenced to five years in prison.

From ‘Full House’ to Big House, Lori Loughlin Faces Two Years in Prison

Paul Marotta

Disgraced TV star Lori Loughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannulli could face a minimum of two years in the slammer over the bribes they allegedly channeled to a crew coach to get their daughters into USC, even if they plead out a deal with the feds.

While her fellow accused Felicity Huffman could spend as little as four months inside, Loughlin is likely to face a much heftier jail sentence due to the amount of money she is alleged to have forked out to get her daughters into the elite school.

TMZ reports that her alleged payment of $ 550,000 lifts her alleged crime into a different sentencing bracket, where the recommended minimum jail time is between 24 and 30 months.

Chicago’s Top Prosecutor Says Jussie Smollett Charges Dropped After ‘Slim’ Chance of Prison

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx defended the surprise decision of prosecutors to drop all charges against Empire star Jussie Smollett, saying that the disorderly conduct case didn’t warrant more aggressive prosecution.

“We deal with a lot of things in this city in this county, not the least of which is a homicide rate that outpaces other major cities, shootings that outpace other major cities, sexual assault, sexual violence, domestic violence,” Foxx told Chicago’s public radio station, WEBZ.And it is not to diminish that what Mr. Smollett was alleged to have done did have an impact on people who are actual victims of hate crime, did have an impact on how people perceived our city.”

But, she added, Smollett was charged with Class 4 felonies, the lowest class of felony crime in Illinois. Smollett also did not have a criminal record.

“For people who do this work every day, who recognize what the charges are—this is a Class 4 felony— for people who are in the weeds of this, we recognize that the likelihood that someone would get a prison sentence for a Class 4 felony is slim,” she added.

Prosecutors have faced widespread criticism since they announced their decision to drop all 16 felony charges against Smollett for allegedly staging a hate crime in Chicago this January. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson have been vocal about their belief that Smollett deserved to face tougher consequences. After learning of the prosecutors’ actions on Tuesday, Emmanel described the decision as a “whitewash of justice.”

In a series of interviews with Chicago media on Wednesday, Foxx argued that Smollett’s case was handled in the same way similar lower-profile cases would have been handled. She seemed to echo earlier statements by her office affirming that Smollett had not been exonerated, noting that Smollett forfeited his $ 10,000 bail and completed community service.

“I think when people see this one particular case, it feels like an outlier, where in fact it’s consistent with how we treat people charged with similar offenses with the same background,” Foxx said in an interview with NBC 5 Chicago.

Foxx explained her decision to recuse herself from the case, explaining that she had been in contact Smollett’s family, and didn’t want her impartiality to be called into question. Other Cook County prosecutors at Foxx’s office handled the prosecution and made the decision to drop the charges.

“It was not unusual for me to talk to a victim in a case,” she said. “At the time that I engaged with this family member, Mr. Smollett was a victim.”

Foxx also seemed to dismiss the anger from Chicago police, who said they were not involved of the decision to drop the charges.

“[The police] worked very diligently on this case and that this was not a question about their abilities,” said Foxx. “But every single day on cases that law enforcement partners work diligently on, there are people who get similar arrangements, people who get diversion, people who get sentences that are probably not what some people would want.”

Some people who go to prison find religion. Some discover literature. But former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos, who spent a total of 12 days behind bars, says he found “street cred” as a Trump ally.

Papadopoulos told MSNBC host Ari Melber Tuesday evening that during his jail stint, he was treated like a “fighter” and a bit of a celebrity because the prison was located in the heart of “Trump country.”

Papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty in October 2017 for lying to the FBI, revealed earlier Tuesday that he is currently seeking a pardon from President Trump and his “lawyers have formally submitted an application.” He also said he’s considering withdrawing the guilty plea he gave in the Mueller investigation as he now believes he “misspoke to the FBI.”

Teresa Giudice Thinks There’s Nothing Wrong With Flirting With Other Guys While Hubby Joe Is Still In Prison

While insider reports insist that Teresa and Joe Giudice are not over, it turns out that them still being a married couple does not stop the reality TV star from flirting with hot, younger guys while Joe is serving the rest of his prison sentence. Apparently, the woman loves the attention and sees nothing wrong with her flirtatious ways.

As you may know, Joe has been locked up for almost three years now, so it makes sense that Teresa has been living her life and getting used to the fact that her husband was not in it!

Teresa has been developing a passion for bodybuilding, and the results are definitely showing, which is why she feels so great in her skin these days!

So because of that, the attention from men never fails to come, and she usually likes to flirt right back!

Most notably, Teresa was spotted holding hands with a 26-year-old New Jersey realtor named Blake Schreck not too long ago.

One source tells HollywoodLife that she sees nothing wrong with flirting even though she is a married woman.

‘She is being very flirty with a lot of guys right now. Teresa loves to flirt with and has been seen out around town and on vacation and loves the male attention because she is not getting it elsewhere right now,’ the insider explained.

They went on to dish that ‘She has been going out a lot more and living what appears to be a single life even though she is married and not single. She loves to go out with her friends and to have a good time. Guys come up to her constantly and she sees nothing wrong with talking to them and even flirting back.’

Buju Banton Is Released From Prison, Returns to Jamaica

Controversial dancehall and reggae star, Buju Banton, was released from prison after serving to seven years in a US Prison. Banton, born Mark Myrie, was released on December 8 and returned to Jamaica

Jamaica’s culture minister, Olivia “Babsy” Grange, reports that Banton “is now really about, from what we understand, employment of young people. If he can help shape and resocialize young people, that is something we should embrace.”

However, they won’t pull out the red carpet for his return. “We can’t give him a hero’s welcome,” says minister of national security, Horace Chang. “He committed a crime.” And yes, Grange agrees, “There’s no getting over the fact that he was convicted, but Buju was loved long before he was convicted and he will be loved just the same, even if he comes home in handcuffs.”

Banton was arrested in Miami in 2009 and convicted and sentenced to a decade in prison in 2011 on charges of possession and conspiracy to distribute of more than five kilograms of cocaine.

Former NFL Player Rae Carruth Released From Prison 18-Years After Having His Pregnant Girlfriend Killed [Video]

Former NFL player Rae Carruth has been released from prison after serving 18 years for the slaying of his pregnant girlfriend.

via NYDN:

The former first-round draft pick was released from Sampson Correctional Institution in North Carolina early Monday.

“I’m excited about just being out of here,” he told WSOC by phone a few days before his release. “I’m nervous just about how I’ll be received by the public. I still have to work. I still have to live. I have to exist out there and it just seems like there is so much hate and negativity toward me.”

Carruth had completed his sentence of 18 to 24 years. He did not speak to reporters as he left the prison on a chilly morning.

Now 44, Carruth was found guilty of orchestrating a plot to kill Cherica Adams to avoid paying child support. Adams was shot four times on Nov. 16, 1999 while driving her car in Charlotte, but managed to make a 911 call that pointed the finger at the NFL player.

Adams, eight months pregnant, died less than a month after the shooting. The child she was carrying was delivered, but suffers from permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy.

Carruth has said he wants to have a relationship with son Chancellor, who remains in the custody of his grandmother. Saundra Adams had said she would be there when Carruth got out of prison, but she was not present on Monday.

The former wide receiver was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 1997. Panthers center Frank Garcia said players were stunned when they heard the news of about his possible involvement in the murder.

“It would be like finding out the guy sitting in the cubicle next to you at work was arrested for murder,” Garcia said. “You just don’t always know people as well as you think you do.”

Some players testified at the trial, and others would spend time in the players’ lounge watching it on Court TV.

“That is one time where you were actually hiding from the cameras,” Garcia said. “You just wanted to stay low and not be involved. All along you’re asking yourself, ‘Did I miss any signs? How is somebody capable of this?’”

Carruth worked as a barber while behind bars, making about $ 1 per hour, according to North Carolina Department of Public Safety spokesman Jerry Higgins. He had signed a $ 3.7 million contract with the Panthers after being drafted.
