FDA puts e-cig makers on notice: Fix ‘epidemic’ teen use or products may be pulled from market

The FDA said it cannot tolerate "a whole generation of young people becoming addicted to nicotine as a trade off for enabling adults to access these products," and so it has launched a crackdown on sales of e-cigarettes to teens.

Anya Hindmarch Puts Latest Handbag Collection to Work

TO THE GRINDSTONE: It’s still August, but Anya Hindmarch is already smelling the autumn leaves and freshly sharpened pencils with a back-to-school style capsule collection called Bags That Work, five styles for women who live to organize and compartmentalize.
The collection is a mix of cross-body and tote bags for day, including the Vere Satchel with its zip-flap front and multiple inside compartments; the Double Zipped Chain, a rectangular number made from a series of envelope-style pouches, and the Ebury Zipped Tote, made to fit a computer or iPad.
There’s also the Nevis Tote, which allows devices to be stored upright, and the Vere Tote, which features the same zip-flap front as its smaller namesake.
Bags can be customized by adding a charm — such as a mink fried egg, a chubby leather heart or a fuzzy pair of red cherries — or by changing the strap. Pockets inside the bags are labeled for phone, cards and coins.
“I love things that work — and deliver — and I find organization deeply exciting,” said Hindmarch, adding that these bags are meant for women who jump from cars to trains and planes, and who need to find their pens, phones, notepads or board minutes quickly.

Two Surfers Attacked By A Shark Puts Margaret River Pro On Hold

Two surfers were bit by a shark in the same stretch of beach in Western Australia’s southwest coast. The bites were relatively close to where the WSL’s CT #3 event – Margaret River Pro is held, evidently putting the competition on hold as prevention.

A 37-year-old man was attacked Cobblestones beach in Gracetown. His lower leg was bitten but he was able to make his way back to shore safely.

Friends and beach-goers acted quickly using the surfer’s leg rope as a tourniquet and provided first aid care until emergency responders arrived.

Jason Longrass, the second victim, hadn’t heard about the first attack and didn’t realize the beach was closed. So the 41-year-old entered the water unknowingly. Shortly after,  Jason was attacked but was able to calmly identify the shark as a 4m (13 foot) great white shark. He managed to shove the shark off after it bit his board and his upper thigh.

He returned to shore and was treated by the paramedics on the beach.

Music Business Couple Puts Musical Soul Food Fest on the Map

Rejoice Musical Soul Food Radio Network CEO Mike Chandler has been working in every aspect of radio for over 30 years. His wife, April Washington Chandler, launched her career as a marketing manager for major record labels such as Warner Bros. and Sony Music in the 1990s. This dynamic duo has pooled their resources to put the state of Virginia’s Hampton Roads region on the map as a family-friendly vacation mecca for gospel music lovers through their second annual Musical Soul Food Festival, which takes place this Saturday, June 24, at Chesapeake City Park in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Music, Games, and Great Food

Last year, over 12,000 people participated in the daylong games, contests, and enjoyed the fresh seafood and barbecue from various food vendors. The other big draw is the music. A seven-hour, soulful music concert kicks off at 2:00 PM with gospel stars such as Anthony Brown & group therAPy, Dorinda Clark Cole, Bryan Andrew Wilson, Jekalyn Carr, Melvin Williams of The Williams Brothers, Kurt Carr, VaShawn Mitchell, Earl Bynum, Jermaine Dolly, Dottie Peoples, Zion’s Joy, Chrystal Rucker, Earnest Pugh, Damon Little, Troy Sneed, Lucinda Moore, TaMyya J, Ruth La’Ontra and The Virginia Aires, among others. Dr. Bobby Jones of BET’s “Bobby Jones Gospel” fame will host.

Musical Soul Fest is a culmination of the years of work the Chandlers invested into the music industry. “What a lot of people don’t know is that Mike is a skilled engineer who can build a radio station from the ground up but you wouldn’t know it because he’s so humble and approachable,” says April.

NASA Training by Day, Radio DJ by Night

Chandler’s career began in 1979 when he was an engineering student at Florida State University where he also had his own WFSU TV show, “Black Expressions.” At the time, NASA was under fire to employ more black engineers so they went to FSU in pursuit of gifted students with strong math or science skills.

“I always loved math and science,” he says. After his morning college classes, he spent his afternoons getting his NASA training and finished his evenings by hosting an evening R&B radio show on KRT 1350 AM, a country station, in Cocoa Beach. “We were playing Barry White and Al Green,” he laughs. “I know it made those country music lovers throw up.”

Chandler stayed with NASA until the Challenger space shuttle explosion in 1986 when the agency laid off 1,100 employees. He moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he worked the afternoon drive at an R&B station and the night shift at an ABC TV affiliate before he met the late Bishop Levi E. Willis. “He had a vision of developing a national gospel radio network,” Chandler says of Willis. “When he learned that I had engineering experience, he asked if I could help him build his network so he moved me to Norfolk. When I got there he had eight stations and when I left in 1996 he had 72.”

Chandler then made a ransom of money in the cell phone industry before buying the Rejoice Musical Soul Food Radio Network, which boasts 38 affiliates, in 2006. The Virginia Beach, Virginia-based network is one of the leading 24/7 hubs for gospel music airplay and it has built a stellar reputation for its quality faith-based and inspirational programming. It also syndicates nearly a dozen radio shows, including comedian Jonathan Slocumb’s forthcoming weekday and weekend radio programs.

Taking the Church Convention to the Next Level

The idea for Musical Soul Food Fest developed in 2011. “I was sitting on the sofa one day talking to Mike,” recalls April Chandler who owns HBK Media, a marketing firm. “Every summer, there are several big church conventions that people attend and it’s nothing but church all day. I thought it would be nice to have something for families to come together, reverence God and fellowship outside of the four walls of the church.”

It took five years to pull the festival together but eventually everything gelled. Cracker Barrel Old Country Store signed on as a title sponsor and one by one, top recording artists began to sign on to perform at the inaugural event in June 2016. “It was a huge success,” says Damon Little, a veteran recording artist best known for the song, “I Won’t Be Defeated,” a Billboard No. 2  hit. “I was surprised myself. I came just because I’m friends with Mike and April. I didn’t have high expectations for the crowd size because it was the first year but I was pleasantly surprised. There were people as far as my eyes could see and we had a good ole time.”

The Chandlers expect to duplicate last year’s success and build upon it for the years to come. “This is such a beautiful area of the country with the beaches and nature,” says April. “It’s the perfect place to bring your family to relax, have fun, and to enjoy some good gospel music.”

Cafe Puts Up Joke Sign Offering Liam Neeson Free Food, And It Works

They never thought he would have taken this offer.

Matt Pruim, manager of Big Star Sandwich Co., a restaurant in Vancouver, Canada, was super excited when he found out that one of his favorite actors, Liam Neeson, was in town filming a movie called “Hard Powder.” So much so, that on Tuesday, he decided to go outside of the restaurant and leave a message on the eatery’s chalkboard sign that read:

“Liam Neeson eats here for free.”

When you hear #LiamNeeson is filming in #downtownnewwest

A post shared by Big Star Sandwich Co. (@bigstarsandwich) on

The sign was put out at 11 a.m. The sandwich shop snapped a picture of it and posted it to its Instagram page.

“We absolutely did not think he’d actually show up,” Alex Johrden, director of operations for Big Star Sandwich told HuffPost.

But at 6:30 p.m., staff at the cafe were shocked when the actor popped in.

One employee, Kyle “Doug” Gus, was inside the shop making sandwiches when he heard his co-worker, Serge Patoka, say, “Holy sh*t!”

Gus turned to tell Patoka off, but stopped dead in his tracks.

Neeson was in their restaurant.

According to Johrden, Neeson then asked the staff in an intimidating voice:

“Where’s my free sandwich?”

“We’re not sure how he saw the sign,” Johrden told HuffPost. “We assume he heard it through the production crew, who had been in and out all day.”

Unfortunately, Neeson didn’t have time to eat, but he had time for a quick photo.

Gus and Patoka posed for one with the actor behind their sign.

Pruim, who came up with the idea for the sign, wasn’t there when Neeson showed up and is all choked up about it.

“We’re hoping he comes back in to take us up on the offer,” Johrden told HuffPost.

Here’s hoping Neeson isn’t chicken (salad sandwich) and does pop back in for lunch.

Grandma Puts Baby Into Crib And … Oops!

A grandmother in Huntsville, Alabama, who tried putting a baby to bed has tripped into viral infamy.

Earlier this week, Valerie Routh Sharp was helping to put her grandson to sleep in his crib.

Since Sharp is only 5 feet tall, she required a step stool to get up high enough to put the child down.

A baby monitor filmed Sharp falling into the crib head first, never letting go of the baby.

Sharp and the baby were OK, but any chance of getting the grandkid back to sleep were put on hold.

Sharp’s daughter, Nikki Sharp Bishop, smelled internet gold and immediately posted the video on Facebook on Tuesday with this comment:

“My mom is going to kill me but I had to post. For those of you who don’t know my mom she is 5ft and has always been vertically challenged. I love this crazy woman!”

The video has been viewed 21 million times and turned into GIFs like this one:

The Huffington Post has reached out to mother and daughter for comment and will update the story if they respond.

Teen’s Hilarious Senior Quote Puts New Spin On Coming Out Of The Closet

Maxwell Barrett wanted to leave high school “with a bang.” He succeeded.

The 18-year-old senior at Raritan High School in Hazlet, New Jersey, tweeted a screenshot of his yearbook photo and accompanying quote on Tuesday:

The quote, credited to “Unknown,” reads: “Of course I dress well, I didn’t spend all that time in the closet for nothing.”

“I wanted to go out with a bang,” Barrett, who is indeed very snappily dressed in the photo, told The Huffington Post. “I had never done sports, or clubs. I was always just an art student. I wanted to go out in a way people would remember me by!” He added that he didn’t come up with the quote completely on his own, but had rephrased a similar quote he’d seen online.

Barrett said he was “out” as gay to most people around him. Though he had never officially told his parents, he said he could tell that they already knew. “It was just more of a confirmation to [my parents] than a coming-out story,” he said.

And his parents’ reaction?

“They said it was the best one in the yearbook and that they were proud of me,” Barrett said. He mentioned that his classmates also loved it, and that even teachers had pulled him aside to congratulate him and comment on the quote.

Barrett said a yearbook supervisor initially told him they weren’t going to run the quote because of its “shock value.”

However, Hazlet Township Public School Superintendent Bernard Bragen could not confirm that happened.

“My understanding is that it was never pulled,” he said.
