The Kid Question: Have You Ever Felt Like You Needed to Choose Between Kids and Career?

stock photo of pregnant career woman

An older friend was reminiscing recently about the ’70s and ’80s, when a woman who had a career generally had to either decide NOT to have kids or, if they were determined to become a mom, find a way to make it work somehow. I suppose it doesn’t sound so strange to write it out here — sure, everyone makes choices — but there was a darkness to her tone that struck me, an underlayer of “If you really need to have kids, you can, but your career will suffer and you’ll never see your kids anyway — so if you were a ‘working woman’ first or someone who wanted a big career, you wouldn’t have kids back then.” (She never had kids, but had several long and successful careers.) I thought we’d talk about it today, decades away from the time she was talking about… what messages have you received about kids and career, and have you ever felt like you needed to choose between the two? If you’ve ever pondered motherhood, did you feel like your career would be constrained to any extent by having kids?

Here are some things to discuss regarding the The Kid Question for working women:

  • For everyone: What messaging have you received about The Kid Question? What have you felt is “expected of you” (by your family/friends/education/office culture)? Which doors have you left open, which have you gone through, and which have you shut, whether mentally or physically?
  • For younger women: How much do you think the message “Make a choice: motherhood OR your career” is still an issue for women today?
  • For working moms: What has surprised you about the sacrifices that working mothers have to make? What have been your best strategies or tools for juggling motherhood and a career (flexible work arrangements, long maternity leaves, options to lean out/on-ramp)? (Coincidentally, over at CorporetteMoms today I’m sharing my top tips on how to find balance as a working mom…)
  • For women without kids, either by choice or circumstance: How has the lack of kids affected your career? What would you advise younger women?

As for me, I think the messaging around career and motherhood has changed significantly — I saw a lot of working mothers in both the magazine world and the legal world, and I never really questioned whether I could have both a career and kids. I did think life would be crazy… but like Finals Week crazy. Intense periods of stress, but mostly doable. That said, I do know of at least one friend my age who did make career choices based on her desire to be a mother — she went for her MBA in her late 20s and was considering becoming an investment banker, but was steered away from that track because she told her advisers she also wanted to have kids a year or two after graduating. (If memory serves she had her son right after graduation, so she may have even been pregnant when these discussions were happening.)

Now, as a mom of two kids, I’ll say that it’s way crazier and that the crazy is more prolonged than I had expected. (There was a whole “Mommy Effect” study that found that a lot of moms-to-be have an unrealistic view of what life as a working mom will be like.) I also feel like the decision to have kids means you step away from what is plannable or even knowable to a certain extent — you step away from clear goalposts and milestones in a career sense and move at your own pace, which may be faster or slower depending on your family situation. (As I write this, the question of equity comes to mind — do men who want or expect to be fathers have to step away from clear goalposts and milestones? Do they walk into parenthood expecting to make any sacrifices, and even with equal parenting, do male parents make equal sacrifices? Might be an interesting discussion to have with the guys in your life.)

Let’s hear from you, ladies — what does The Kid Question look like to you now? Do you feel like you have to sacrifice kids for career, to any extent in 2019? If you’re a working mom, what choices and sacrifices have you made? If you don’t have kids yet but plan to, what choices and sacrifices do you expect to make?

Question you always wanted to ask flight attendants

Whether you’re interviewing for a brand new flight attendant or finally want to grow your wings and fly, there are five questions and good answers that often come up at interviews.

What would you do in an emergency?

Flight attendants need to be responsible for looking after the passengers and crew while in the air – even in an emergency. Interviewers will often look for people who can make decisions quickly while still keeping calm. Reassuring the interviewer you would fit your own oxygen mask before helping others and talking them through the structured emergency plan are two ways you can demonstrate you know how to remain calm under pressure.

What would you do if someone was frightened of flying?

Many passengers can become irritated during flights and is likely to be something that many flight attendants need to deal with in their careers. One of the most essential skills to demonstrate is empathy teamed with a positive attitude. People in the interview should state how they would ask if the passenger was alright before offering anything that might help put them at ease, and reassuring the passenger anxiety while flying is a common issue.

How would you cope with someone ignoring the safety instructions?

This is a way to show the interviewer that you have conflict management skills as you try and calm down a passenger and explain the importance of listening to the safety instructions. If that doesn’t work, then stating how you could ask for help from other cabin crew and inform the pilot as a last resort are also good answers that show how you think on your feet and work as part of a team.

How would you cope with conflict with a co-worker?

Working as a flight attendant means you will often be close to many other people all trying to do their job. Many of us have had conflict with co-workers in the past, and it’s important to demonstrate how we overcame the barriers. Offering up examples of what happened and explaining how you were both able to put the situation behind you is an excellent place to start. Be sure not to blame anyone else for the conflict in your answer.

How do you handle new environments?

Of course, being a flight attendant means you will be traveling all around the world and need to adapt to many new environments along the way. This answer is a way to describe that you are flexible, know how to adjust to and learn about other cultures, and are willing to discover any new country along the way. Examples of how you have done this in the past can help to showcase your adaptability to change.

Being a flight attendant means we often get to fly all around the world, but there can be many valuable skills that come with the job. The interview is the perfect time to learn all about these key talents while letting your personality shine through at the same time.

Drake Used His Grammy Acceptance Speech to Question the Importance of the Grammys

At Sunday night’s 61st Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, Drake — who was largely expected to sit this one out, as he has done for the last several years — surprised viewers by showing up to accept the Grammy for Best Rap Song for his smash hit “God’s Plan.” But it was his acceptance speech that stole the show, as the Canadian rapper took his time onstage to rebuke the musical establishment and send a shout-out to artists who may not be receiving recognition from organizations like the Recording Academy.

“We play an opinion-based sport, not a factual-based sport,” Drake said. “This is a business where sometimes it’s up to a bunch of people that might not understand what a mixed race kid from Canada might have to say or a fly Spanish girl from New York.” He continued: “If there’s people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don’t need this right here, I promise you that. You already won.” And then, although it seemed that Drake had more to say, he was cut off both on the telecast and live in the theater.

Drake has been nominated for dozens of Grammys in his rap career, but has only won four, including this year’s prize. The last time he attended the Grammys was back in 2013. His album Scorpion is also nominated for Album of the Year. And although he did end up dropping by this year’s ceremony, he reportedly declined to take on a performance slot.

To Give Or Not To Give: That Is The Tax Question

YOU ARE JOINING US TO TALK ABOUT CHARITABLE GIVING THIS MORNING. WHY?

As we kick off the first filing season under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which was signed into law in December 2017, there are questions about how it could affect charitable giving. While Americans are incredibly generous, and most people give to charity because they want to help, the tax code does affect giving. While one of the objectives of the 2017 legislation was to make the tax filing process easier by increasing the amount of the standard deduction, it also reduced the number of people who will use itemize deductions, including charitable donations. Many experts believe this will result in a decrease in giving.

WHY DOES A HIGHER STANDARD DEDUCTION AFFECT GIVING?

Under the new tax law, the standard deduction was raised from $ 6,350 to $ 12,000 for individuals and from $ 12,700 to $ 24,000 for couples. This means that an individuals and couples will have to have deductions over $ 12,000 and $ 24,000, respectively in order to go the itemized route when filing their taxes, and a minority of Americans fall into this category. Indeed, a new congressional report estimates that just 18 million households are expected to itemize deductions this year, down from 46.5 million last year. And without itemizing, these taxpayers lose all tax benefits associated with charitable giving. In addition, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act also lowered the top marginal tax rate for individuals and couples from 39.6 percent to 37 percent. Reducing the top marginal tax rate might also result in a decline in giving because it reduced the tax incentive of charitable donations. Together, these changes have many charities and nonprofits worried.

HOW MUCH WILL THESE CHANGES REDUCE GIVING?

While no one knows for sure, the estimates are sizable.  The American Enterprise Institute estimates charities will collect $ 16.3 billion to $ 17.2 billion less in donations this year as a result of the new law. The Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center projects that charitable will drop by one-third, from $ 63 billion to $ 42 billion, due to the elimination of the federal tax incentives.

ARE THERE STILL WAYS WE CAN GIVE AND REDUCE OUR TAX BURDEN?

There are still a couple of options out there. One way to take advantage of your giving for tax purposes is through gift bundling. Basically, you combine multiple years of giving to your favorite charities into a tax year, allowing you to reach an amount that will allow you to use itemized deductions on your taxes. If you are over 70.5, the new tax code allows you to make charitable gifts tax free from your IRA. Finally, you can give non-cash assets. By giving stocks or other appreciated assets, such as artwork and antiques, which have grown in value, you can avoid capital gains taxes.

IS THERE ANY GOOD NEWS FOR CHARITIES?

There is some good news. While the new IRS code may eliminate the tax incentive, it doesn’t eliminate the desire to do good. In fact, a new report from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy projects total charitable giving will rise by 3.4% in 2019 and by 4.1% in 2020. Specifically, it projected that giving by individuals would grow by 2.1% and 3.4% in 2019 and 2020, while predicting corporate giving would grow by 3.2% and 2.6% over the next two years.

US general has a question for Google: Why will you work with China but not us?

Google China search engine

Google CEO Sundar Pichai is scheduled to testify before Congress next week, and he’ll potentially face questions on a number of thorny issues ranging from perceived search engine bias to Google’s interest in developing a search engine for use in China that would be heavily censored there.

To that latter point, a top US general went public today with what sounds like a pretty reasonable question for the tech giant. It boiled down to, essentially, why are you guys willing to work with China, but have such a problem working with your own country’s military?

Chrissy Teigen Hits Back at Mom-Shamer Over Breastfeeding Question

Chrissy Teigen doesn’t have time for the haters — especially when it comes to her kids with husband John Legend.

The Lip Sync Battle cohost hit back at a mom-shamer who tried to slam her for not breastfeeding in the comment section of the “All of You” crooner’s Instagram post on Monday, November 5.

“Wild scene backstage at @nbcthevoice,” Legend, 39, captioned a pic of Teigen, 32, bottle-feeding their 5-month-old son, Miles, while the model’s mom, Vilailuck Teigen, snuggled with their 2-year-old daughter, Luna.

One commenter was quick to ask, “You no longer breastfeed?” to which Teigen hilariously responded.

“John never breastfed Miles,” the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model quipped in response, referring to the fact the comment was made under her husband’s picture.

Teigen is no stranger to clapping back at social media trolls who enjoy picking on her. Earlier this year, the Utah native put a hater in their place after the woman made a comment about her appearance less than four months after she gave birth to her second child.

“You look beautiful but you should grow your hair long again,” a follower wrote underneath a series of pictures Teigen shared from a late-night talk show appearance in October. “Girls with round faces should not have short hair like that. It makes your face looks huge. Been there….believe me….LONG HAIR.”

Teigen responded: “@bcnjw honestly wow thank you because when I wake up each morning I wonder what @bcnjw would do and then I try to make her happy. So this was a mistake on my part.”

Weeks prior, the Cravings author shut down speculation that she and Legend — who tied the knot in September 2013 — were expecting another child.

“I’m asking this with the utmost respectful, but is @chrissyteigen pregnant again?” a Twitter user commented about a photo of Teigen from the 2018 Emmys in September.

“I just had a baby,” Teigen hit back. “But thank you for being soooo respectful.”
