Ole Miss Basketball Players Kneel During National Anthem To Protest Local Pro-Confederate Rallies

Mississippi v Georgia

The Ole Miss basketball team is woke (well, some of them). Players on the squad knelt during the national anthem in protest of pro-Confederate rallies happening near their university’s campus.

Deadspin reports that K.J. Buffen, Terence Davis, Luis Rodriguez, Bruce Stevens, Devontae Shuler and Breein Tyree took a knee before the team’s home game against Georgia on Saturday (Feb. 24). A total of eight players kneeled per reports.

Reports ESPN:

Minutes before the game, both teams formed lines for the anthem. As “The Star-Spangled Banner” began, six Rebels players — who appeared to be KJ Buffen, D.C. Davis, Brian Halums, Luis Rodriguez, Devontae Shuler and Bruce Stevens — knelt one by one. Two more players — appearing to be Breein Tyree and Franco Miller Jr. — took a knee on the song’s final line.

The game was being played while two pro-Confederacy groups organized a march onto the campus in Oxford, Mississippi.

“The majority of it was we saw one of our teammates doing it and we just didn’t want him to be alone,” Ole Miss scoring leader Tyree said after his team’s 72-71 victory. “We’re just tired of these hate groups coming to our school and portraying our campus like it’s our actual university having these hate groups in our school.”

So no, they weren’t disrespecting the flag or servicemen. Star player Tyree later tweeted: “To the people that fight for this country, my teammates and I meant no disrespect to everything that you do for us, but we had to take a stand to the negative things that went on today on our campus. #WeNeedChange”

The team’s coach, Kermit Davis, was unaware the protest was going to happen, but he supported his players, as he should.

Respect.

Borderland Showdown: Trump & Beto’s Dueling Texas Rallies Reveal Immigration Divide

Joe Raedle

In a city separated from Mexico by a river that’s a mere 50 yards wide, dueling rallies hosted by President Donald Trump and former congressman Beto O’Rourke demonstrated just how far apart the debate over immigration has become.

Trump, standing beneath twin crimson banners emblazoned “FINISH THE WALL,” framed the creation of his long-promised border wall as a humanitarian emergency—and called his opponents’ positions “dangerous and immoral.”

“Both parties should come together to finally create a safe and lawful system of immigration,” Trump said. “We need Democrat votes to do it.”

Prince’s Estate Demands Trump Stop Playing His Music At Rallies

At a rally in Mississippi, Trump played Prince‘s iconic 1984 song “Purple Rain.” Prince’s estate was not here for it.

“The Prince Estate has never given permission to President Trump or The White House to use Prince’s songs and have requested that they cease all use immediately,” Prince’s estate said in a statement via Jeremiah Freed, also known as Dr. Funkenberry.

Here is a video below of the song being played at the Trump rally:

While Prince was certainly a political artist, he often talked about race, poverty and faith in his music. He was not associated with a particular political party, and as a Jehovah’s Witness, he was also open about never voting.

In 2009, Prince told Tavis Smiley about President Barack Obama, “Well, I don’t vote. I’ve don’t have nothing to do with it. I’ve got no dog in that race.”

He continued, “The reason why is that I’m one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and we’ve never voted. That’s not to say I don’t think … President Obama is a very smart individual and he seems like he means well. Prophecy is what we all have to go by now.”

In 2015, Prince played a private concert for Obama in the White House’s East Room before shows in Washington, D.C.

In 1990, Prince gave $ 2,000 to Minnesota Sen. Rudy Boschwitz, who was a Republican. Boschwitz’s campaign director said at the time, “It’s safe to assume that Rudy is not familiar with Prince’s work.”

Boschwitz lost to Democrat Paul Wellstone in the 1990 campaign.

Well, let’s hope other people will be voting in droves on November 6.

QAnoners Say Their QAnon Merch Is Being Banned By Secret Service at Trump Rallies

Leah Millis/Reuters

QAnon conspiracy theorists have begun sneaking their QAnon shirts into Trump rallies amid reports that people wearing the shirts have been turned away by people they claim are Secret Service officers staffing Trump events.

QAnon is founded on a series of anonymous clues posted online by a person named “Q” that purport to show a secret world where Trump is engaged in endless battle with a pedophile cabal of high-ranking Democrats and Trump’s foes will soon be banished to Gitmo. It is an inherently ludicrous idea but one that’s managed to gain a ton of traction through Trump rallies, where attendees regularly show up with Q shirts and signs.

Indeed, the conspiracy theory jumped into the mainstream in July, when a number of people with QAnon shirts and signs were shown on TV at a Trump rally in Florida. Other QAnon supporters who get caught on camera at Trump rallies have earned cryptic shout-outs from Q, and believers in the theory scrutinize Trump’s hand gestures at rallies to claim he’s pointing to QAnon believers.
