We Found the ‘Plaid Shirt Guy’ Who Trolled Trump’s Rally With Hilarious Faces

Reuters/Twitter

Despite his vein-popping rage and reality-TV theatrics, President Trump’s political rallies have become rather mundane events. He screams about The New York Times, repeatedly references Hillary Clinton, and rails against his many enemies, much to the crowd’s delight. Rinse and repeat.

But during Thursday night’s rally in Billings, Montana, something truly unusual happened.

Standing directly behind the president during his 75-minute rant was a plaid-clad young man, at times flashing incredulous, mocking faces directly to the camera as the president incoherently blustered about his critics. That man was eventually yanked—on live TV—from his spot behind Trump.

‘Are These People Funny?’ President Trump Offers Reviews of Late-Night TV Hosts at Rally

The back and forth between Jimmy Fallon and President Donald Trump is anything but over.

Following Fallon’s apology for his 2016 interview with the then-Republican candidate, Trump made time during Monday’s campaign rally in West Columbia, S.C. to take another shot at Fallon – and the other hosts of late-night television.

“Did you see Jimmy Fallon?” Trump asked the crowd, who booed at the The Tonight Show host’s name. “Jimmy Fallon… The guy screws up my hair, going back and forth… He was so disappointed to find out it was real. He couldn’t believe it.”

Fallon’s feelings on ruffling Trump’s hair were not lost on Trump himself, who tweeted on Sunday that Jimmy Fallon was “now whimpering to all” about the “famous ‘hair show’” and called on the comedian to “be a man.”

Later that Monday night, Jimmy Fallon responded to Trump’s Twitter barb with a monologue, where he wondered if the President had better things to do than take a swing at him on social media.

After attacking Fallon at the South Carolina rally, which was meant to support Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, Trump continued his tour of other late night hosts that annoy him, doubling down on his thoughts on Stephen Colbert.

“The guy on CBS, what a lowlife. I mean, honestly, are these people funny? I can laugh at myself,” he said after bemoaning the lack of Johnny Carson-level talent on TV.

Trump also worked in a jab at Jimmy Kimmel, saying he said has “no talent.” He ruled out any future appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he has also appeared.

“Now I wouldn’t do his show. That guy’s terrible,” he said. But Fallon isn’t completely out of the President’s good graces, as Trump made a point of calling him “a nice guy,” though he did add that “he looks like a lost soul.”

Irked by Parkland Students, Pro-Gun Demonstrators Rally Across U.S.

Susan Zalkind

On a brisk, windy Saturday afternoon, a couple hundred pro-gun activists gathered outside the Texas Capitol Building in Austin. The event organizers aimed to spread awareness and information about their Second Amendment Rights, as the gun control movement has gained substantial momentum following the mass shooting at Parkland High School in Florida.

“It really means a lot to see everyone here standing up for our rights. But the truth is we shouldn’t have to,” said Derek Wills, one of the event’s speakers representing the activist group Lone Star Gun Rights. Wills also hosts a podcast called Lone Star Gun Talk. “Our founding fathers would be rolling in our graves right now if they could see the State of our Union today. The freedom we so proudly boast is but a shadow of its former self.”

The Austin rally was just one of 50 such demonstrations organized in state capitals throughout the country by The National Constitutional Coalition of Patriotic Americans.

Calls to End Gun Violence Cross Racial Lines With ‘March For Our Lives’ Rally

Thousands of people from around the country will hit the streets of Washington D.C. on Saturday to take part in the “March for Our Lives,” a student-led rally demanding gun reform in wake of the mass shooting that killed 17 high school students in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14.

Since the massacre, survivors of the notorious Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre have used their media coverage to draw national attention to the epidemic of gun violence and pressure politicians to enact stricter gun laws.

Letter from The Obamas

In addition to national press coverage, the activists have received large donations from celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Wade. They also received a handwritten letter of encouragement signed by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama praising their activism. The letter, which is dated March 10 and was published by Mic, reads:

“We wanted to let you know how inspired we have been by the resilience, resolve and solidarity that you have all shown in the wake of unspeakable tragedy.

“Not only have you supported and comforted each other, but you’ve helped awaken the conscience of the nation, and challenged decision-makers to make the safety of our children the country’s top priority.

“Throughout our history, young people like you have led the way in making America better. There may be setbacks; you may sometimes feel like progress is too slow in coming. But we have no doubt you are going to make an enormous difference in the days and years to come, and we will be there for you.”

Black Lives Still Matter

Along with this push for gun reform, the young activists are using their platform and admitted “white privilege” to spotlight underreported gun violence in communities of color. During a Twitter live chat video, survivor David Hogg, talked about the racial disparities in how shootings are covered and the obligation of the #NeverAgain student leaders to stand up for victims of color who have largely been ignored.

“If this happened in a place of a lower socioeconomic status or … a black community, no matter how well those people spoke, I don’t think the media would cover it the same,” Hogg said. “We have to use our white privilege now to make sure that all of the people that have died as a result of [gun violence] and haven’t been covered the same can now be heard.”

One recent shooting that comes to mind is the fatal killing of Stephen Clark, a 23-year-old African American father in Sacramento who was shot 20 times while standing in his grandparents’ backyard on Sunday. Outraged demonstrators held a peaceful protest Thursday night that delayed the NBA game between the Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks.

Inspired by the Parkland students, actor LeVar Burton published a piece that ties the lack of government accountability for gun violence in America to slavery. “America has sold its soul to special interests, and the Parkland students know it,” he writes, criticizing lawmakers for being controlled by the gun lobby.

“People of color in this country, in this culture, tend to not matter as much as those who are white; that is the truth of America. In the Black Lives Matter movement, young black people have been shouting from the rooftops until their voices are raw and hoarse, and America hasn’t listened. But now that it’s white kids who are shouting at the tops of their lungs, people pay attention,” writes Burton.

Florida school shooting survivors delivered powerful speeches at an anti-gun rally, and they didn’t hold back

Florida school shooting survivors delivered powerful speeches at an anti-gun rally, and they didn’t hold back

Florida school shooting survivors delivered powerful speeches at an anti-gun rally, and they didn’t hold back

The survivors of the devastating school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland aren’t staying silent. On Saturday, February 17th, students, staff, and members of the community joined together at a Florida school shooting protest in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The survivors spoke out against the gun lobby, the National Rifle Association, and the lax gun laws that led to the tragic events of February 14th.

The Rally to Support Firearm Safety Legislation was a raw, intense affair. Still fresh from the events that left 17 students and staff members dead, survivors shared their stories and experiences with the large crowd. High school senior Emma Gonzalez was among those who spoke for the victims, and those left behind.

“Every single person up here today, all these people should be home grieving,” Emma Gonzalez said in her speech at the Florida school shooting protest. “But instead we are up here standing together because if all our government and President can do is send thoughts and prayers, then it’s time for victims to be the change that we need to see.”

Gonzalez has been an especially powerful voice in the days since the shooting. During the attack, she sat with fellow students in the auditorium of her school, not knowing what would come next. But at the rally, she was one of the survivors who spoke out against gun violence the loudest.

Senior David Hogg spoke too, urging those in the crowd — and the millions watching across the world — to vote out politicians who support the gun lobby.

“This is not just another mass shooting. No shooting is just another mass shooting,” Hogg said. “This needs to be a turning point. This shooting was the result of a number of situations and individuals, but action can still and should still be taken to prevent something like this from happening. People in Congress, people in state legislatures, just lawmakers in general, need to stand up and not let these political divisions prevent them from saving children’s lives.

Gonzalez, Hogg, and other speakers weren’t shy about getting political.

From Florida Senator Marco Rubio all the way to Donald Trump, the students were ready to call out anyone who was content to offer nothing more than ‘thoughts and prayers.’ And it looks like this is just the beginning of the activism of the Florida school shooting survivors. Staff and students alike have vowed to bring about change in an era of escalating gun violence.

“We will be the last mass shooting,” Gonzalez told the crowd. The shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, is charged with killing 17 people and injuring many more in what has become one of the deadliest school shootings in history.

Our hearts go out to the victims of the families and the survivors. We can only hope that the words of Emma Gonzalez prove true.

‘Final Fantasy XV’ Almost Had a Car Rally VR Game

Final Fantasy XV’s side-story, Monster of the Deep, is set to launch in November for PlayStation VR. Initially the development team was working on a VR experience in the form of a shooter, where you played as Prompto and helped the main boys take down a Behemoth. But before this shooter experience, director Hajime Tabata revealed that the team had some different ideas for a VR game in mind. The most popular one was a car rally in which players would be able to drive all over the in-game world of Eos.

“The Prompto VR shooter that we created last year at E3, that was done about the span of three weeks,” Tabata said. “It’s like a showcase for the VR technology and platform. But we knew that if we wanted to make a full-fledged VR game based on battle mechanics of Final Fantasy XV, it will probably take at least two years just to do that.

“We felt, ‘Okay. Let’s take a step back and see our first approach, our first proper approach at VR. What can we do that’s within the realm of reality?’ We thought, ‘Okay. Let’s leverage the world of Final Fantasy XV that we created and create an immersive experience around that.’ Therefore, we arrived at fishing as the main gameplay began.”

But what about…

“There were other ideas as candidates of what we want to do for the first VR project,” he added. “One such idea was like a massive car rally across the world of Eos, but when we started looking into that, that would probably take as long, if not longer, than creating a VR game based on the battle mechanics.”

Because creating this massive VR car rally would  have taken too much time, the team ultimately scrapped the idea in favor of something that fit within their timeline: and the fishing game was born.

“When we look at each platform, we look at the characteristics and we develop something specific for that,” Tabata explained. “For VR, gameplay mechanics like fishing or the massive car rally idea, the first and foremost idea is that, you, the player get into the world of Final Fantasy XV, fully immerse yourself in that environment, but also taking advantage of the fact that we have these four characters that people love and being able to interact with them. We thought, ‘Okay, fishing makes sense in terms of how it fits within that world, you as a hunter in that world kind of going through and exploring.”

So we won’t get that big Final Fantasy car rally, but we will get the chance to catch (and battle) exotic fish in Monster of the Deep.

“I think the story of Monster of the Deep is kind a supplementary side story to the overall main story of Final Fantasy XV, where the player is a hunter looking for this underwater monster,” Tabata said. “Over his or her journey of finding that monster, you’re going to encounter these other kind of monster fishes. So, it just kind of felt right.”

The startling reality facing America in wake of Virginia white power rally

President Trump should have left well enough alone. His Monday denunciation of costumed sheet-wearers and Nazi wanna-bes could have cleared the way for Americans of all stripes to focus their outrage on things that matter more than presidential words. That would be the violence that is infecting our politics and the frightening acceptance of it…

White nationalists see violent Charlottesville rally as successful turning point

HARI SREENIVASAN: We begin tonight with continuing coverage of the attacks in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend.

On Saturday, President Trump drew criticism from the left and right alike when he didn’t name neo-Nazi groups for inciting the attacks. He instead denounced violence — quote — “on many sides.”

Today, he was more specific.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.

We are a nation founded on the truth that all of us are created equal.

Those who spread violence in the name of bigotry strike at the very core of America.

HARI SREENIVASAN: The fallout from the weekend’s violence continued to reverberate around the country today. In Charlottesville, the driver of the suspected vehicle that rammed into a crowd of people appeared in court via video link.

And Attorney General Jeff Sessions said this morning the vehicle attack meets the legal definition of domestic terrorism.

NewsHour producer P.J. Tobia was in Charlottesville over the weekend, and begins our coverage tonight.

P.J. TOBIA: Protests continued across the country today in Tennessee in response to the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville over the weekend, and in solidarity with those killed and injured.

MAN: We are here today to send a message to our white brothers and sisters that white supremacy hurts you too.

P.J. TOBIA: Back in Charlottesville, fallout from the rally continued. In the district court there, a judge ordered 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr. held without bond on second-degree murder charges. He’s accused of ramming his car into a crowd of demonstrators who came out against the white nationalist rally to denounce a Charlottesville city decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

The rally included members of the KKK, neo-Nazis and others. Those who knew him in high school say he professed enthusiasm for Nazi ideology.

Thirty-two-year-old Heather Heyer of Charlottesville was killed in the attack. Nineteen others were injured.

Her mother spoke outside her home today.

SUSAN BRO, Mother of Victim: I am extremely proud of my daughter. I am extremely proud that she stood for what she believed in, that she not only gave mouth to it, but she gave heart to it, she gave her soul to it, and now she’s given her life to it.

P.J. TOBIA: Separately, two Virginia state police officers were also killed, when their helicopter, which had been monitoring the protests, crashed.

GOV. TERRY MCAULIFFE, D-Va.: Those state troopers were with me 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Berke Bates was part of our family. And it was tough yesterday, after I left here to drive to the Bates home and to see a man in those two beautiful children whose dad is not coming home ever again.

P.J. TOBIA: Charlottesville Mayor Michael Signer called out the rally’s organizers.

MAYOR MICHAEL SIGNER, Charlottesville, Virginia: There’s a lot of bluster in the alt-right. There’s a lot violence in the alt-right. There’s a lot of hate.

P.J. TOBIA: Signer rejected criticism that the police response was inadequate.

MAYOR MICHAEL SIGNER: There were almost 1,000 law enforcement officers on the ground for an operation in a city of 50,000 people. We had descended upon us thousands of people for the initial event. Thank God it wasn’t worse. No shots were fired. No other lives were lost. No property was damaged.

P.J. TOBIA: White nationalist Matthew Heimbach, who leads a small group based in Indiana, helped organize the protest and showed up at the Charlottesville courthouse today. When we spoke yesterday, he called the rally a success and says the white nationalist movement is stronger than ever.

MATTHEW HEIMBACH, Nationalist Front: If the nationalist community can come together, stand together and fight together, that we are going to be unstoppable, that our rise, even just going back since I have been involved in this movement, it used to be a rally of 50 guys was very successful. Now we’re rallying 1,000, 1, 500 people in the streets. Our movement is growing.

P.J. TOBIA: Heimbach took zero responsibility for an event that led to death and injury.

Someone died yesterday because of your rally. In the rally you helped organize, someone’s dead because of that. How do you feel about that? And do you feel at all responsible?

MATTHEW HEIMBACH: Not at all. There would have been no violence whatsoever yesterday if the police had simply done their job and given the leftist protesters their own space to protest, which is their right, and we’d been allowed to hold our rally. The left are the ones that were attacking us.

P.J. TOBIA: Another group that drew people from around the country for the weekend’s rally, armed right-wing militias known as the Oath Keepers and 3 Percenters.

They don’t share all the beliefs of white nationalist groups calling for racial separations, but do hold some extremist views. The group’s leadership said they were there to protect everyone’s First Amendment rights. At least one militia group ended up needing protection themselves.

Earlier this year, NewsHour went inside one of these groups, the Georgia Security Force, a local 3 Percent militia.

Chris Hill is their leader.

CHRIS “BLOOD ANGEL” HILL, Georgia Security Force: I think what the government gives, the government can take away. If they’re providing the security for us, they can take it away.

P.J. TOBIA: After this weekend, at least one militia group said it would no longer encourage participants to show up at white nationalist rallies.

This morning, the FBI announced that it had arrested an Oklahoma man in a sting operation on charges that he tried to detonate what he thought was a 1,000-pound bomb in Oklahoma City on Saturday; 23-year-old Jerry Drake Varnell told an undercover agent he believed in the 3 Percent militia ideology, and was inspired by the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

Meanwhile, other cities around the country are considering removing their Confederate statues, and white nationalists say they will continue to stage large protests to prevent their removal — Hari.

HARI SREENIVASAN: P.J., you and our producer Mark Scialla were both there over the weekend. Both sides, the left and the right that were there, say that this is a turning point. So, how is that the case?

P.J. TOBIA: Well, the right-wing right nationalists say it’s a turning point because they managed to pull off what was in their view a successful rally, even though the planned speeches that they had and the actual event formally really never took place.

They were able to create all of this chaos in Charlottesville. They were able to get their agenda pushed to the front page of newspapers, and television news programs. They were enter the city, protest, march around with their signs and wave their shields and get a lot of coverage for their message.

And they weren’t — none of them were injured. None of them were really hurt in any way. They feel like they got their message out and it was a success.

So, it was a turning point for them, in that they feel like they really know how to do this now. They can organize, get into a city, and get out and get headlines.

For the left, they feel like they’re the ones who actually won the day because the white nationalists weren’t able to carry out their formal program. They got pushed out of Lee Park, as Mark and I saw. They were rallied sort of from the area of battle, if you will, and then they were having a victory march when that terrible, tragic murder by automobile took place.

And so both sides feel they can claim victory and both sides will almost certainly become more calcified in their beliefs and a little more outrageous in their rhetoric.

HARI SREENIVASAN: How are these people different than the racists that used to march on cities years ago?

P.J. TOBIA: In many ways, they’re not.

They’re young men, many more affluent than in previous generations, but real — the real difference now is that they have harnessed the power of social media, so that they’re able to organize much more quickly, put together sort of lightning strikes of grouping to get together in a place.

They can also get their message out to a much broader audience, people who would never have engaged with white nationalists. Previously, if you wanted to hear these kind of messages, you had to go to some sort of weird bookstore downtown where they sold foreign magazines, whereas now, on Twitter, bots can be used to flood any Twitter stream with their messages of hate.

HARI SREENIVASAN: Well, Mark, let’s a little bit talk about the presence of the Antifa, the sort of increased presence of folks who are more aggressive in wanting to push back here than the predominantly peaceful counterprotesters that were there.

MARK SCIALLA: Sure.

So, Hari, Antifa has been around at least since the ’80s. Antifa is short for anti-fascists. And they have really got — they have come to prominence recently in the national conversation because they have been the ones who have been at the forefront of these alt-right rallies.

And their message is basically that toy way to confront these groups is by getting in their faces, is by showing up in force and not allowing them to have or hold public space, because if you really carry out the rhetoric of white supremacist logic to its end, it’s genocide. And they don’t think that it’s acceptable to allow them to organize.

HARI SREENIVASAN: All right, Mark Scialla, P.J. Tobia, thanks for your reporting this weekend.

MARK SCIALLA: Thanks, Hari.

HARI SREENIVASAN: We will take a closer look at the issues coming out of Charlottesville, including the connection between Civil War statues and the current protest movements, and we will discuss the swell of reaction to President Trump in our Politics Monday segment later in the program.

President Trump Returns to New York City as Thousands of Protesters Rally Outside Trump Tower

President Donald Trump‘s homecoming to New York City Monday night was met with protests as people lined up outside of Trump Tower.

Trump tweeted about his return to the city, writing, “Leaving for New York City and meetings on military purchases and trade.”

The commander-in-chief’s arrival comes after violent protests erupted in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Friday night. The president faced backlash over his initial response to the white nationalist rally that claimed the lives of three people.

He followed up his statement with a second one, condemning “racism” for leading to “the horrific attack and violence that was witnessed by everyone.”

Trump landed in New York City at about 8:30 p.m., according to The New York Daily News.

Thousands of people rallied outside of Trump Tower on Monday, while another group staged a mock “die-in” and funeral for American values nearby before marching, the Daily News reported.

People chanted “No KKK! No Racist U.S.A.! F— Trump!” while waiting for Trump to arrive.

Protesters gathered outside of Trump Tower, holding signs that read “White Silence Equals Death,” as well as swastikas with a red line running through it to denounce the Nazi party.

Several other people held signs that read “PEACE” and “We The People SAY NO” in white font against a Pride flag.

Trump began his Monday remarks by boasting that the stock market continued to hit record highs, as well as how unemployment continued to drop.

He did not acknowledge that his initial response blamed “many sides” for the violence, simply saying: “As I said on Saturday, we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence.”

According to a pool report, the president declined to answer any shouted questions following his press conference, including several about whether he regretted waiting until now to denounce racism.

On Saturday, violence broke out at a pre-planned “Unite the Right” rally as the white supremacist protesters clashed with counter-protesters who were demonstrating against the event. A 20-year-old man identified as James Alex Fields Jr. is accused of ramming his car into a group of protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

On Monday, Trump mentioned by name Heyer and the two Virginia state troopers, Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Berke M. M. Bates, who were killed Saturday afternoon in a helicopter crash as they were responding to the rally.

“Her death fills us with grief,” Trump said of Heyer.

Asked by CNN why he didn’t “condemn those hate groups by name over the weekend,” the president replied, “They have been condemned. They have been condemned.”

The network followed up by asking the president why he didn’t hold a 3 p.m. press conference on Monday as previously promised.

“We had a press conference. We just had a press conference,” Trump said, adding that “it doesn’t bother me at all” to answer more questions.

“But I like real news,” he said, telling the CNN reporter: “You’re fake news. You’re fake news.”

WATCH: Jimmy Fallon Says White Nationalist Rally In Charlottesville ‘Was Just Disgusting’ in Emotional Monologue

Jimmy Fallon is having a political moment.

The Tonight Show host began his opening monologue Monday addressing the rally that left three dead and several injured in Charlottesville, Virginia, calling what occurred “disgusting” and saying it was his “responsibility to stand up against intolerance and extremism as a human being.”

“I was sick to my stomach,” Fallon, 42, said of watching the rally and the protests that followed on the news.

“My daughters were in the next room playing and I’m thinking, ‘How can I explain to them that there is so much hatred in this world?’ ” he continued, talking about his two children: Winnie Rose, 4, and Frances Cole, 2.

“They don’t know what hate is,” he added. “They just play and they laugh and they have fun. But, as kids grow up, they need people to look up to.”

Fallon took a moment to criticize President Donald Trump for lagging behind in denouncing the white nationalists who took to Virginia to rally.

“The fact that it took the president two days to come out and clearly denounce racists and white supremacists is shameful,” Fallon said.

“And I think he finally spoke out because people everywhere stood up and said something,” he added about the president’s second statement on Charlottesville on Monday.

“It’s important for everyone, especially white people in this country, to speak out against this. Ignoring it is just as bad as supporting it,” Fallon continued.

“We all need to stand against what is wrong, acknowledge that racism exists and stand up for what is right and civil and kind,” he added. “We cannot do this. We can’t go backward. We can’t go backward.”

Fallon, who has repeatedly shied away from politics on the Tonight Show, previously took a stance against Trump in July when he welcomed transgender comedian Patti Harrison on the late-night program following the president’s sweeping ban on transgender people serving in the military.

White nationalist rally brings clashes in Charlottesville

HARI SREENIVASAN: Good evening and thanks for joining us. At least one person is dead and several are injured tonight after protests and counter protests turned violent in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency. Hundreds of white nationalists and alt-right activists clashed in the streets with counter-protesters and police.

McAuliffe said the declaration would facilitate the state’s response, which included calling out Virginia National Guard soldiers.

NewsHour Producer P.J. Tobia has been covering today’s demonstrations and has more.

P.J. TOBIA: The violent clashes began before a so-called “Unite the Right” rally scheduled to take place in Charlottesville’s McIntire Park.

Organizers had originally planned to hold a rally in the city’s “Emancipation Park,” which used to be called “Lee Park” in honor of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The Charlottesville City Council voted in April to remove a bronze statue of Lee from that park, sparking opposition by white nationalists.

They converged on the park today, waving Confederate flags and chanting Nazi-era slogans. They were soon surrounded by counter-protesters with their own signs and chants. Shoving and fighting soon followed.

This self-described militia member says he had rocks thrown at him.

MILITIA MEMBER: We constantly get blamed as the haters. We came here in peace. We came here to keep security in this town for freedom of speech whether we agree with you or not. Our goal is to give you a chance to voice your opinion, that’s all we’re about.

P.J. TOBIA: This man is a Charlottesville native. He said he came out to show the “unite the right” rally did not represent him.

UNNAMED MAN: I came out to support our people. Not only people of color but the people of this community that represent peace.

P.J. TOBIA: Unitarian pastor Susan Frederick-Grey blamed the political rhetoric from the White House for emboldening the white nationalists.

SUSAN FREDERICK-GREY: Fear and hate have been given license in our country. Racialized violence has been given permission in this country and we are here to stand love.

P.J. TOBIA: A spokesman for the Anti-Defamation League called today’s protest a “white supremacist rally,” indicating, “The darkest corners of society are emboldened to come forward and openly parade their bigotry on Main Street.”

The rally ended before it ever began. By early afternoon, police had largely cleared the park.

Later, one car plowed into a group of counter-protesters, causing multiple injuries.

This video — posted to Twitter by a staff member of the former U.S. congressman from Charlottesville — shows a car driving into a crowd and then speeding away in reverse. The witness says the crash seemed intentional.

President Trump said today in a tweet, quote: “We must all be united at condemning all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Let’s come together as one.”

Later, he spoke about Charlottesville from his golf club in New Jersey.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. It’s been going on for a long time in our country. Not Donald Trump, not Barack Obama, this has been going on for a long time. There is no place in America. What is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives.

P.J. TOBIA: The person who died was killed when a car plowed into a crowd of protesters. It happened on the street right behind me. 19 others were also injured. In all, there was one arrest.

HARI SREENIVASAN: P.J., you were near the area when the car plowed into the protesters. Describe that scene. We’ve kind of seen pictures here and there throughout the day, but what was it like in there?

P.J. TOBIA: Well actually, at that moment, Hari, the protest had turned kind of festive. There were people with funny signs, there was laughing and singing and chanting. And all of a sudden you heard the screech of tires and a rush of people coming the other direction. The tone changed dramatically. People were calling for medics, there were bloody people on the street, there was someone performing CPR, a lot of people heaving and crying and within minutes EMTs were on the way.

HARI SREENIVASAN: This is not what Charlottesville’s known for, it’s primarily a college town. When you talk with so many of the people you spoke with today, how did they feel about what was happening, not just today but also last night?

P.J. TOBIA: Overwhelmingly, the message is, this is not what our city is about. Charlottesville is a welcoming place, it’s a diverse place, it’s a modern city with modern feeling, and that these kind of old school racist tropes are not welcome here. We spoke to a lot of local people who basically all echoed that message.

HARI SREENIVASAN: So to be clear, the driver of that car has been apprehended?

P.J. TOBIA: That’s right, police say they apprehended the driver earlier today.

HARI SREENIVASAN: All right. P.J. Tobia reporting for us from Charlottesville, Virginia tonight. Thanks so much.

P.J. TOBIA: Thanks Hari.

Steve Scalise’s Condition Upgraded to Serious As Family and Friends Rally Around the Congressman

Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise’s condition has been upgraded from critical to serious, PEOPLE confirms, as friends, family and colleagues continue to rally around him after he was shot and wounded last week during baseball practice.

“Doctors are happy with the progress he’s made,” Scalise’s press secretary, Lauren Fine, tells PEOPLE. “But his doctors said he will be in the hospital for some time.”

Scalise, (R-La.) the third-ranking GOP leader in the House, was one of four people shot when a gunman opened fire early Wednesday morning while the Republican team practiced in Alexandria, Virginia, for the annual bipartisan Congressional Baseball Game.

When Chief Deputy Whip Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) found out that his close friend and colleague was among those who had been shot, “I just didn’t think it could be real,” he tells PEOPLE.

“There were other members there that morning who were shot at who are lucky and blessed to be alive,” he says. “A lot of folks have been affected by this. It’s shaken everyone up in a serious way.”

Scalise, 51, was shot in the hip by a bullet that ripped through his body, causing severe damage to internal organs, his doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Friday.

While he was able to speak while he lay injured on the field, he suffered massive blood loss and went into shock, which left him in “imminent risk of death” upon arriving at the hospital via helicopter, his doctors said Friday.

Since Wednesday, he has undergone several surgeries, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement released on behalf of his family.

On Saturday, he underwent yet another surgery, MedStar said.

“He continues to show signs of improvement,” the statement said. “He is more responsive and is speaking to his loved ones.”

During a press conference on Saturday, Scalise’s trauma surgeon, Dr. Jack Sava, said he is expected to recover fully but will need “a period of healing and rehabilitation” after being discharged.

Besides Scalise, congressional aide Zach Barth, Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika, and US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner were shot during the rampage. Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were also injured during the incident.

Bailey was injured from bullet fragments while exchanging fire with the shooter, Fine says.

The gunman, identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, died from injuries he sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.

‘Team Scalise’ Rallies for Its Beloved Leader

While Scalise continues to recover, a tight-knit group of family, friends, and colleagues continue to hold vigil at his bedside and at the hospital.

“Everyone is hopeful,” says Fine.

Since Wednesday, Scalise’s wife, Jennifer, his sister and other family members, close friends from Louisiana and colleagues have packed into a waiting room in the hospital.

Scalise’s high-profile visitors have included Pres. Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and fellow Congressman Cedric Richmond, (D-La.)

As those gathered at the hospital dined on ‘southern comfort food’ like Chik Filet and other goodies sent to the hospital by well-wishers, Jennifer Scalise and her sister-in-law greet visitors with hugs.

“They are a warm family,” says Fine.

So is his work family, says McHenry.

“Working with Steve makes you part of his family,” says McHenry.

Adds Fine: “People are very loyal to him. And he is loyal back to them. We are Team Scalise.”

Known to “just dive big into life,” Scalise started to feel more like himself on Saturday, when he cheered for his alma mater Louisiana State University’s baseball team on Twitter, saying, “Tigers win! Tigers win!”

On Sunday, Scalise’s Twitter account featured a Father’s Day message thanking well-wishers for their “outpouring of love” and giving a special nod to his family.

“Steve’s greatest joy is being a father to Madison and Harrison, and a husband to Jennifer,” the message read. “This Father’s Day has special meaning for the Scalise Family, and they send their best wishes to every family, especially the dads. Take the time to be close to the ones you love.”

Like many others, McHenry continues to pray for Scalise, saying he has the strength to pull through this ordeal.

“He’s the guy who finishes up at 3 in the morning and you see him at 6 in the morning back again and always has the same sort of optimism and happiness,” he says.

“I describe him as a tank,” he says. “He is just tough.”

Russell Simmons Leads ‘I Am A Muslim Too’ Rally in New York

Music mogul Russell Simmons led thousands of New Yorkers in a show of solidarity for Muslim Americans at the “I Am A Muslim Too” rally on Sunday in Times Square.

Simmons headlined the event, which was co-organized by the Foundation For Ethnic Understanding and the Nusantara Foundation in response to the increased anxiety over President Donald Trump’s executive order limiting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries.

“We are here today to show middle America our beautiful signs and, through our beautiful actions and intention, that they have been misled. We are here unified because of Donald Trump. We want to thank him for bringing us together,” Simmons told the crowd

He added, “We are focused on things that are not helpful to America, we’re using the Muslim community as a scapegoat. We are being mean to the people who are the victims of terrorism. All of the diversity we see here today will prevail.”

Also at the rally was New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, Chelsea Clinton, Q-Tip and Susan Sarandon, who the Daily Mail reports told the crowd that it’s no longer possible to remain neutral and that “We will fight hatred with love.”

Earlier this week, Russell co-authored a blog for The Huffington Post with Rabbi Marc Schneier that promoted Sunday’s rally and argued that Muslim immigrants have made great contributions to the country:

All of the above-mentioned people are Muslim immigrants who have proven through their life’s work that they truly “support our country and deeply love our people.” It is high time President Trump should acknowledge — perhaps through a series of tweets ― that these American patriots and untold thousands of other Muslim immigrants from all walks of life are improving the quality of life of all Americans.
