Rihanna Has Reportedly Accumulated Over 500 Songs for Her Upcoming Dancehall Album: ‘They’re Only Choosing 10 Records’

A new Rihanna album is on the way!

According to a new report from Rolling Stone, Rih has been hard at work crafting the sound of her upcoming dancehall-inspired album and has amassed over 500 songs in the process.

A Vogue profile first mentioned that Rihanna was working on a dancehall album back in May.

via Rolling Stone:

It’s common for stars at Rihanna’s level to cull the best demos from reams of submissions when selecting songs for albums. “[Rihanna’s team] have, no lie, 500 records for this project [from] different producers and writers,” explains one dancehall producer who asked to remain anonymous. “They’re only choosing 10 records. They’ve been having writing camps and trying to keep them quiet for almost a year and a half now. I’ve been flying to Miami, flying to L.A., cutting records nonstop for this project.”

“Every artist, every producer, every songwriter in Jamaica or of Jamaican descent has been working on [Rihanna’s album] and has little snippets of publishing or production credits on it,” another source close to the project says. “I think they’ve got eight songs,” he continues, “but her A&R is still asking for records.” “They’re looking for one more [song],” adds a third source with knowledge of the album-making process.

Through a rep, Rihanna declined to comment on the new album.

If Rihanna’s team likes a submission, they will do “some tweaking,” according to a second producer. “I didn’t even get the final [version of the song I turned in],” the producer adds. “I got the semi-final, and then I got the contracts. They ask my opinions, but you wouldn’t expect Rihanna to work with people that don’t do good work – they did some good work on it.”

But another producer who submitted material for the album worries the star is diluting the Caribbean aspects of the music. “Their whole thing was, ‘Yo, we’re gonna make this [album] real dancehall, [real] Caribbean,’” says the producer. “Rihanna is Bajan, so let’s make this a full project like that. To me, it hasn’t been going that way. They’re kind of mixing it up, putting in the pop. If the reggae artists and producers won’t get the chance on the pop album, at least let us survive on the dancehall album. They’re changing up the direction continuously.“

Our bodies are READY! You can read more about Rihanna’s album process here.

‘Black Panther’ Crushes Box Office Records, Making Black History

Call it fate that Black Panther, a pro-black Marvel movie featuring a mostly dark-complexioned cast and directed by a 31-year-old black man, would make history in the month of February.

The sci-fi flick, based in the fictional African country of Wakanda, raked in more than $ 700 million globally in the last two weekends and $ 404 million domestically by Sunday, just 10 days after its release. The $ 200 million film has yet to open in Japan and China.

According to Forbes, Black Panther also broke records in the first seven days of its release, earning $ 292 million in North America, making it the highest grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film in its first week. It stands in fourth place of top-earning movies in one week behind only The Force Awakens ($ 390.8m), The Last Jedi ($ 296.6m) and Jurassic World ($ 296.2m).

Redefining Diversity and Hollywood

Despite being an Africa-centric film, Black Panther has received support from a widely diverse audience. African Americans made up 37% of ticket buyers, followed by white Americans, who made up 35%, and Hispanics with 18%. Women, who normally make up 35% to 40% on a superhero movie’s opening weekend, made up 45% of ticket sales.

Overwhelmed by the record-breaking support, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler penned an open letter thanking fans and the press.

“Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong. It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film. But to see people of all backgrounds wearing clothing that celebrates their heritage, taking pictures next to our posters with their friends and family, and sometimes dancing in the lobbies of theaters often moved me and my wife to tears,” it reads.

Coogler launched his career in Hollywood five years ago with the critically acclaimed film Fruitvale Station, which is based on the real-life police shooting of Oscar Grant in Oakland, California. Now, Marvel Studios’ youngest filmmaker is being praised as the “new Steven Spielberg.” The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) alum was also recognized at the 2016 ABFF Honors with the Rising Star Award.

‘Black Panther’ Keeps Breaking Box Office Records

NEW YORK (AP) — With a massive $ 40.2 million in ticket sales Monday, “Black Panther” has set another box-office record: biggest Monday ever.

The Walt Disney Co. again raised its box-office estimates for the Marvel sensation on Tuesday. The film’s updated Monday performance — $ 7 million higher than Disney earlier forecast — narrowly topped the previous record, set by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015 with $ 40.1 million.

The higher Monday figure gives “Black Panther” the second biggest four-day weekend, behind only the $ 288.1 million of “The Force Awakens.” With $ 242 million over the Presidents’ Day weekend, “Black Panther” moves ahead of December’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” in the ranks of four-day starts.

Ryan Coogler’s film, starring Chadwick Boseman, is the first big-budget tent pole release featuring a nearly all-black cast. The movie’s three-day gross of $ 201.8 million ranks fifth highest of all time, not accounting for inflation.

Internationally, “Black Panther,” which cost $ 200 million to make, is also outperforming earlier estimates. It has made $ 184.6 million overseas thus far, giving it a worldwide total of $ 426.6 million.

Are Divorce Records Public?

Filing for a divorce—even amicably—is tough. For some, emotions run high and tensions feel never-ending, and it can be overwhelming navigating a complex legal system and filing document after document until your divorce is finalized.

While going through this tumultuous process, you may not have had time to consider what happens to your divorce paperwork once it’s filed.

You may not know that most court documents are public record (meaning the public can read it) unless there is a specific reason why they shouldn’t be. This includes your divorce papers (and even your Separation Agreement, if filed).

In this post, find out what a public record is, what records are private, and if you are able to hide your divorce papers if you’d prefer that no one have access to them.

What is a Public Record?

A public record is a record that has been filed with a public office. They are documents that must be retained by institutions and made available to the public, meaning any person can inspect, examine, and copy these materials regardless of the purpose. This obligation often doesn’t apply to insignificant pieces of paper, like a voicemail or an initial draft.

Public record applies to government, law, business, and more. Plenty of institutions are required to make certain documents accessible in an effort to be transparent.

Sometimes, the only thing stopping people from reading whatever court-filed document they want to read is that they do not know how to access them and, when they do find them, the expense. But it’s easier—and cheaper—than you might think.

As of 1999, cases are held by the courts electronically and are accessible through the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) service.

Cases before 1999 can be accessed at the court where they were filed or at a Federal Records Center.

In short, with a small fee per document and an additional charge per page, just about anyone can read your “confidential” divorce documents.

Which Divorce Documents are Not Public Record?

Many filed divorce documents are public record, but there are times when certain documents should not be accessible to the public.

Sometimes a court matter involves a sensitive issue, and the records could be harmful if made public. In such situations, the court might “seal” the court documents, including the court transcript or any filed documents. A sealed record can only be viewed by obtaining a court order.

Courts might agree to seal divorces that deal with children, domestic violence, private identification numbers or information, or propriety business information. They might also seal documents with false allegations to prevent the spread of misinformation.

How to Get Your Record Sealed

Generally, a court won’t seal any documents without a request, and even if you request it, the court could say no if they don’t think it’s necessary.

For example, usually a court won’t seal information for inconsequential reasons like personal embarrassment. This means you might want to avoid writing a tell-all statement in your divorce papers unless the information clearly supports your claim.

However, if you want your divorce documents sealed, you should, at the very least, try by filing a motion.

With a valid reason as to why this document could be detrimental to you or others, the courts may oblige.

Sometimes, asking to redact a portion of your divorce papers as opposed to all the documents filed in one case is an easier request for the courts to accommodate. So, if necessary, try your luck with a lesser inquiry.

In some states, you may be able to ask the judge to waive court filing requirements, which means your confidential information won’t be accessible to the public because it wasn’t filed with an institution that’s required to keep its records.

Knowing Your Divorce Papers Are Public

The headache of divorce can worsen with the thought that your friends and family are privy to your confidential information, which is why it’s important you know what public records are, which records are sealed, and how you can seal your records (if you’re eligible).

Be sure to make the right decisions about what to include as evidence in your divorce and, if you need to include sensitive information, it might not be a bad idea to take the necessary steps and attempt to seal it, even if your request is unsuccessful.

45 Great Moments in Black Business – No. 28: Berry Gordy Sells Motown Records

This year BLACK ENTERPRISE celebrates the 45th anniversary of its roster of the nation’s largest black-owned businesses – The BE 100s.  To commemorate the significance of this collective’s widespread impact on black business and economic development as well as American industry over four decades, we have presented 45 milestones moments.  As part of this tribute, we continue our yearlong countdown.

Today we reveal No. 28 in the web series “Great Moments in Black Business.”

1988: Berry Gordy sells Motown Records, which created “The Sound That Changed America” and held the No. 1 position on The BE 100s for a decade after its inception.

(Berry Gordy. Image: Black Enterprise Magazine, October 1970)

A high school dropout and factory worker who evolved into a phenomenal businessman, Berry Gordy built Motown Records into one of the most successful black-owned music companies in U.S. history. Its roster of timeless artists included Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Jackson Five, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Commodores and a myriad of other well-known acts.

For roughly 30 years, Gordy brought soul music to the mainstream. An “irresistible force of social and cultural change, Berry Gordy’s legendary Motown made its mark not just on the music industry but society at large,” according to As such, the company grew into the largest black-owned business in the nation from the 1960s throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.

(Image: Black Enterprise Magazine; October, 1970)

By the mid-1980s, however, independent Motown Records was hemorrhaging money as it tried to survive in an industry dominated by multinational conglomerates that were gobbling up talent and market share. Among the major setbacks was the loss of major artists like Michael Jackson and Diana Ross to such labels as CBS/Epic Records and RCA Records, respectively. As a result of these industrial shifts, music industry icon Gordy was forced to sell Motown for $ 61 million to MCA Inc. and Boston Ventures Limited Partnership in 1988.

Paving the Way for Future Black Music Executives

Gordy kept other Motown subsidiaries including the highly profitable Jobete Music Co., and Motown’s film and television production unit, producer of TV specials like Motown’s 25th Anniversary in 1983 and the critically acclaimed 1989 miniseries, Lonesome Dove. In 1997, Gordy sold 50% of Jobete to EMI Music Publishing for $ 132 million, then viewed as one of the most significant music publishing deals ever. In 2003, EMI acquired another 30% of Jobete for $ 110 million and the remaining 20% in 2004 for about $ 80 million, ending Gordy’s stake in Motown.

(Suzanne de Passe. Image: Black Enterprise Magazine; June, 1974)

Before selling, Gordy was lauded as a talented songwriter and innovator who established a business model for entrepreneurs in the entertainment industry. Observers say Gordy helped pave the way for other industry giants like Russell Simmons and Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Gordy formed his empire in 1959, guiding its operations from a Detroit house known as “Hitsville U.S.A.”  As BLACK ENTERPRISE reported in a series of profiles throughout the years, he started with an $ 800 loan he received from his family’s Ber-Berry Co-operative. The co-op was the brainchild of his eldest sister Esther, and it provided seed money for the establishment of Berry’s first record company, Tamla, in 1959. It became Motown Record Corp. in 1960. Beyond producing a series of hit records, Motown’s motion pictures division also broke ground; Its 1972 breakout film, Lady Sings the Blues, starring Diana Ross as Billie Holiday, garnered five Academy Award nominations.

Motown Debuts as a Black Enterprise BE 100

In 1973, BLACK ENTERPRISE started its annual ranking of the nation’s largest black-owned businesses, and Motown debuted at the No. 1 spot, grossing $ 40 million in revenues and holding that position on every list until 1983 when the company grossed $ 91.7 million in revenues. Motown lost the title of list leader in 1984 when Johnson Publishing Co., publisher of Ebony and Jet magazines and producer of Fashion Fair Cosmetics, took the top spot. Motown would make its last appearance on the 1988 list.

Under Gordy’s watch, Motown churned out hundreds of hit singles. In 1966, the company’s hit ratio, the percentage of records released that made the national charts, reached 75%-an incredible figure. Gordy was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, recognized for his musical genius.

Lifetime Achievement

In 2000, Gordy set up the Gwendolyn B. Gordy Fund to help former Motown artists, musicians, and writers from the 1960s and 1970s with financial assistance. He donated $ 750,000 to the charity, named in memory of his deceased sister, Gwendolyn.

Over the years, Gordy’s musical genius and entrepreneurial prowess also garnered numerous awards. In 2001, he received the A.G. Gaston Lifetime Achievement Award, BLACK ENTERPRISE’s highest honor for business achievement.  Last year, President Obama included him among the 2015 National Medal of Arts recipients. The citation read: “To Berry Gordy, for helping to create a trailblazing new sound in American music. As a record producer and songwriter, he helped build Motown, launching the music careers of countless legendary artists. His unique sound helped shape our nation’s story.”

Projected 2017-18 records and standings for every NBA team

Who is the biggest threat to the Golden State Warriors? Just how heated will the competition be for playoff spots in the Western Conference, and are there eight playoff-caliber teams in the East? To help answer these questions and more, here’s an early look at 2017-18 NBA projections using ESPN’s real plus-minus (RPM). Last season, these projections correctly forecast that the Houston Rockets would have home-court advantage in the first round, the Denver Nuggets would challenge .500 and the New York Knicks would stay in the lottery. (They also missed on other teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks’ playoff run and the Detroit Pistons’ falling out of the postseason.) As in past seasons, I’ve put together projected playing time based on a formula that estimates games missed by taking into account the number missed over the past three seasons (adjusted for any offseason injuries/suspensions)…

Independent Artist Jimii Hitmaker Signs Distribution Deal With Amada Records

Jimii Hitmaker

James “Jimii” Carlisle is a 24-year-old independent artist on the brink of mainstream success. Born and raised in New York City, he now resides in Virginia and goes by the alias “Jimii Hitmaker.” Although many hip-hop artists are often drowned out by a sea of unsigned talent and up-and-coming rappers, Carlisle’s distinctive voice and unique rapping pattern make him a standout.

Black Enterprise first caught up with the promising rapper last year, when he told us about his aspirations and passion for making music. Now, months later, Carlisle has been hit with a new wave of success.

In April, he released two hit singles, “Jet Pack” and “Stunnin.” Both received worldwide recognition, while “Stunnin” is currently charting at No. 63 on Digital Radio Tracker’s National Airplay Top 150 Independent Chart.

He also signed a distribution deal with Amada Records—a premier record label underneath the EAE Management Group umbrella that is distributed via QUE Records/Capitol Music Group—to promote his single “Stunnin.”

In an email, Carlisle opened up about his new distribution deal and his journey in the music industry.

Jimii Hitmaker

Why do you think you received the opportunity to sign a single distribution deal with Amada Records?

The single is doing pretty good and personally, I think they saw the motivation and drive I have for my music and career.

As an independent artist, how do you feel about the deal?

I still am independent and own all my music and royalties. The distribution is to help me be pushed to a wider audience. I need a more effective way to get my message out, so I partnered up with Amada Records, but I’m still an independent artist signed to my own label, Ticket Vision.

Would you ever consider signing a recording contract with a record company?

Personally, I’d rather remain independent and build my brand and [own] label. And then, maybe one day, partner with a major [record label].

What type of music can people expect to hear from you?

Well, my new single “Stunnin” is available now everywhere music is sold. (Go request it now at your local radio station!) I’m dropping a video every Friday until I release my next project, “If Not Me Than Who,” and later this month, I will drop the third installment to my mixtape series, titled “The Mixtape That Didn’t Happen Pt.3.”

Carlisle’s new project “If Not Me Than Who” will be released July 21. You can follow him on Twitter here.

#BRUHNews: Baltimore Cop Accidently Records Himself Planting Drugs [VIDEO]

Common sense will tell you, if you are committing a crime make sure you are not caught on tape. A Baltimore cop did exactly that while planting evidence at the scene of a crime.

Baltimore’s Fox 45 reports that Richard Pinheiro Richard and two other officers were caught in the act as a body camera recorded the entire covert operation. The 90-second clip shows the three on duty men in the back of a house with Pinheiro hiding to be what seems to be a bag of pills underneath trash.

The three men head back to the sidewalk where Pinheiro turns on his body camera. Little did he know that it can record up to 30 seconds of footage prior to being manually activated by the wearer.

While knowing the camera is on Pinheiro says “I’m going to check here” as he walks back to trash pile to uncover the planted drugs. Luckily for the defendants, a public defender reviewed the footage a day before their trial was set to commence resulting in the charges being dropped. The prosecutor commented saying, “I’ve passed it up and we are all appalled … something is going to happen because of this revelation.”

The Baltimore Police Department has also released a statement saying “we take allegations like this very seriously and that’s why we launched an internal investigation into the accusations. We are fortunate to have Body Worn Cameras which provide a perspective of the events as reported.”

We take that with a grain of salt as Pinheiro was called as a witness in a separate case.

“They had knowledge. They watched it and were appalled by what was on the video, and then for whatever reason made the choice to continue to call him as a witness,” Public Defender Debbie Katz Levi explained. You can view the video below.

It’s a dirty game and clearly they are not playing fair.

These 10 Wedding World Records Are Nothing Short Of Amazing

By Kristen Droesch for

Weddings are becoming more and more extravagant, and we’re all aware of it. Haven’t you ever found yourself at a wedding reception and thought, “Gosh, this must be a record-setter”? Well, a record was quite literally recently at a Sri Lankan wedding, when the bride rolled in with 126 bridesmaids. Yes 126! This got us thinking — what other world records* are out there relating to weddings?

Wet and wild.
The largest underwater wedding was achieved with 303 divers in Poland attending the nuptials of Ewa Staronska and Pawel Burkowski in 2011. Even the priest, Father Pawel Wrobel, was a licensed diver!

All that glitters.
The record for most pearls on a wedding gown was set by Yumi Katsura of Japan, who put a whopping 13,262 cultured Akoya pearls on her gown in 2012.

That’s a lot of conjugal visits.
In 2000, 120 prisoners at Carandiru prison, Sao Paulo, Brazil, got married to their respective fiancées, setting the record for largest prison wedding.

Rolling thunder.
Also in 2000, Peter Schmidl and Anna Turceková of Bratislava, Slovakia included a wedding procession of 597 motorcyclists on their bikes. What, they couldn’t make it an even 600?

That’s some meal.
Jayalalitha Jayaram took the cake for largest wedding feast when she spent $ 23,299,162 on her foster son’s reception in 1995, hosting 150,000 guests. The menu alone was estimated at $ 621,311!

A table-breaker.
Weighing in at 15,032 lbs, the largest wedding cake in the world was made by the chefs of Mohegan Sun in Connecticut for their New England bridal showcase.

Watch your step!
The longest wedding veil measured 11,017 ft 0.5 in and was worn by Lebanese bride Sandra Mechleb. How do you store something like that?

Bark if you believe in love.
The largest dog wedding took place in the United States in 2007 and involved 178 dog “couples.” Though not official, we’re sure the dogs enjoyed themselves.

The Vomit Comet.
All it took for Erin Finnegan and Noah Fulmor (USA) to perform the first zero-gravity wedding in 2009 was a “modified Boeing 727-200” (and, we assume, a daredevil preacher).

In 2011, Eleanor Franks of the UK set the record for fastest marathon ran in a wedding dress (veil included) by clocking in at 4 hr 11 min 01 sec.
