Jussie Smollett Returns to Set, Tells ‘Empire’ Cast He’s Innocent + Feels ‘Betrayed’ By the Criminal Justice System [Video]

Jussie Smollett returned to work on ‘Empire’ today after getting arrested and charged with felony disorderly conduct for allegedly faking his hate crime.

via TMZ:

Sources on the “Empire” set tell us the cast and crew were waiting at least 30 minutes for Jussie to begin the scheduled scene. When he eventually showed his face he was very emotional, and surrounded by his family.

We’re told he addressed everyone on set, saying …”I’m sorry I’ve put you all through this and not answered any calls. I wanted to say I’m sorry and, you know me, I would never do this to any of you, you are my family. I swear to God, I did not do this.”

After that, he left the set. We’re told it was obvious Jussie had been crying a lot, so producers said he would have to come back later. He did, and we’re told he is currently shooting the scene.

Aside from that, his reps released a statement saying he ‘feels betrayed’ by the criminal justice system.

“Today we witnessed an organized law enforcement spectacle that has no place in the American legal system,” read a statement put out on the actor’s behalf following his release from custody Thursday afternoon. “The presumption of innocence, a bedrock in the search for justice, was trampled upon at the expense of Mr. Smollett and notably, on the eve of a Mayoral election. Mr. Smollett is a young man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence and feels betrayed by a system that apparently wants to skip due process and proceed directly to sentencing.”

Jussie was released from Chicago police custody after posting bail and surrendering his passport during a bond hearing in front of State of Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County Judge John Fitzgerald Lyke Jr.

His bail was set at $ 100,000, with the actor required to post $ 10,000 (10 percent) for release.

If you’re still scratching your head as to how this unfolded, take a look at the bond proffer released today.

‘Chicago Med’ Sneak Peek: Robin Returns — What Does That Mean for Connor?

Remember when Robin Charles (Mekia Cox) and Dr. Rhodes (Colin Donnell) were in a super serious relationship and she just up and left town? She returns during the Wednesday, February 19, episode of Chicago Med — and it’s safe to assume it will shake things up inside the hospital.

“She comes back because Dr. Charles’ ex-wife is in need of some help at the hospital. One of the big things between Connor and Robin is that fact that she just sort of left, she disappeared,” Donnell, 36, told Us Weekly exclusively. “He had to figure out somewhat to be OK with that. I think there are a lot of feelings that are still unexplored there.”

‘Chicago Med’ Sneak Peek: Robin Returns — What Does That Mean for Connor?

Of course, it doesn’t help that Dr. Rhodes is currently single again following a falling out with Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) — did she sleep with his dad or what? Regardless, “it’s going to be complicated” with his ex back in town, the former Arrow star added.

He also noted that there may be some interactions between Ava and Robin: “It’s going to be super awkward.”

In Us Weekly’s exclusive sneak peek of her return, Robin sits down with her dad (Oliver Platt) and her mom, CeCe (Paula Newsome), who has never been introduced on the show.

“You did good there,” Dr. Charles says to his ex-wife when Robin gets up to take a call. She corrects him: “We did good.”

However, she then reveals some bad news – and why she’s back in Chicago. “My lymphoma is back and my old chemo regime isn’t working,” CeCe tells Dr. Charles. “I already got third and fourth opinions and the only thing left is clinical trials.”

Chicago Med airs on NBC Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.

John Oliver Returns to Explain Brexit on Last Week Tonight

Last Week Tonight returned from its hiatus just in time for John Oliver to explain Brexit, “the playful fun name that has been given to a disaster.” While the U.K. is not scheduled to leave the E.U. until mid-March, Oliver says the planned departure has already had an impact on the nation’s economy, causing the British Pound to drop almost 14%.

Prime Minister Theresa May has spent the last two years locking down the terms of the U.K.’s exit from the E.U., but when she put the details to vote, she was served the biggest defeat in commons history. According to Oliver, one of the main sticking points is Northern Ireland, which is part of the U.K., but shares a border and a long, tragic history with the Republic of Ireland. If you don’t know why a hard border with security checkpoints could reignite tensions between the two Irelands, Oliver suggests “Googling Bloody Sunday or Daniel Day Lewis’s 1990s film output” or playing the chorus of the Cranberries’ song “Zombie.” Based on interviews with experts, people are confident it will be a complete mess, which Oliver notes: “Usually if you think something is going to be that much of a disaster you need to see Will Smith in blue face.”

There is also a chance that the U.K. will be forced to leave the EU without a deal in place, the so-called “no-deal Brexit.” According to Oliver, a no-deal Brexit would result in some “manageable annoyances,” but could also lead to more challenging issues like shortages of medication. Medicine shortages are not a problem that Brits are used to having, as, according to Oliver, Brits’ problems are usually limited to hearing “Americans mispronouncing the word ‘vitamins’, not having enough beans for breakfast and having to wait 20 years for another royal wedding.”

Almost every form of Brexit is anticipated to have some negative impacts on Britain’s economy. According to reports cited by Oliver, Brexit under Theresa May’s plan would result in an economy that is 3.9% smaller, while a no-deal Brexit could result in an economy 9.3% smaller. Oliver points that Britain is opting for these scenarios. “Britain is basically Pompeii, if Pompeii had voted for the volcano,” he said.

Unfortunately, Oliver thinks a second referendum wouldn’t necessarily work, because the situation is too complex for a yes-no vote. Even the first referendum was a terrible idea, because the government punted it to the voters, which Oliver notes, is not their job. The voters elected people to make informed choices about difficult decisions on their behalf. It’s like if you went to the doctor and asked, “Should your appendix leave or remain?” Oliver said.

According to Oliver, the politicians need to admit that the first referendum was fatally flawed and Brexit should be cancelled. That is unlikely to happen, though, and England is determined to “step firmly down on the rake of history” and leave the E.U. with “a great deal of confusion about how horses can go on holiday.”

Serena Williams Returns to Australian Open With Clinical Win

(MELBOURNE, Australia) — Serena Williams jumped straight back in where she left off at the Australian Open, returning for the first time since winning the title in 2017 when she was pregnant with her first child.

Williams conceded only five points in the first set and was completely clinical in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Tatjana Maria, another mom who lives close to Williams in Florida and visits for play dates with their daughters.

It was overwhelming for Maria, who got just two of her first serves into play in the first set and didn’t have game points until she held in the fourth game of the second set. She was in tears as the pair hugged at the net following the match, and Williams joined the crowd in giving the German player a clap as she left the arena.

“Yeah, I think the last time I was here, I was pregnant and playing at the same time — which is insane,” Williams said. “It’s kind of weird walking back on, by myself this time.”

Williams considers the 2017 victory here among the best of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, giving everything that was going on. Since returning to the tour following the birth of Alexis Olympia, Williams hasn’t added to her list of majors, having lost the finals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

“Literally the best win of my career,” she recalled Tuesday in a post-match TV interview. “Just exciting to be back.”

At Melbourne Park, she’s now on an eight-match winning streak. She’s only lost one of her last 22 matches at the season-opening major, which she has won seven times.

The 37-year-old Williams said she loves to test herself early in the year after practicing “hard for that first hit.”

“I like to jump into the deep end and swim,” she said.

The 16th-seeded Williams will face either Eugenie Bouchard or wild-card entry Peng Shuai in the second round.

Madison Keys opened her season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over 18-year-old wild-card entry Destanee Aiava in the first match on Rod Laver Arena on Day 2.

“I expected it to be tough — obviously playing an Aussie on Rod Laver,” Keys told the crowd. “Thanks for the love, anyway.”

She broke Aiava’s serve four times and fended off the only break-point chance she faced. Aaiva, who was the first player born in this century to play in the main draw of a major when she got a wild card here in 2017, didn’t help herself with six double-faults.

The No. 17-seeded Keys has reached the semifinals or better at three of the last five Grand Slam tournaments, and her focus is on the bigger prizes for now.

“I was having issues with my knee at the end of the year (and) ran out of time to be ready for Brisbane — wanted to be 100 percent for here,” she said of her recent lack of competitive matches. “It’s my first match of the year, so mostly just happy I did everything pretty well.”

Seventh-seeded Karolina Pliskova won the Brisbane International title in the first week of the season and continued her streak by beating fellow Czech Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-2 to progress to the second round. No. 12 Elise Mertens and No. 21 Qiang Wang also advanced.

Kei Nishikori is feeling a little bit liberated after having to come back from two sets down to beat Kamil Majchrzak in a difficult opener.

The eighth-seeded Nishikori won 10 consecutive games after losing the second set in a tiebreaker and took 15 of the last 17 games before Majchrzak retired with an injury with the score at 3-6, 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-2, 3-0 at Margaret Court Arena.

“He was playing amazing tennis,” Nishikori said. “I have to be happy going to the next round — I almost lost in the first round, so I have to be positive and get better.”

Among the other men advancing were Ryan Harrison, who beat Jiri Vesely 6-0, 7-5, 6-3, No. 12 Fabio Fognini and No. 15 Daniil Medvedev.

Pierre-Hugues Herbert beat Sam Querrey 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-1.

The temperature was already 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) when play began on all courts shortly after 11 a.m. local time and it rose to 33 C (91 F) by the early afternoon.

‘Mary Poppins Returns’: All the Easiest to Miss Easter Eggs and References

Mary Poppins Returns is every inch the love letter to Robert Stevenson’s 1964 original starring Julie Andrews. As such, there are plenty of callbacks and echoes throughout. From bars of music in the new songs and score, and repetition of lyrics, to mirrored story beats — and Lin Manuel Miranda’s (presumably deliberate) dodgy Cockney accent paying homage to Dick Van Dyke’s fondly derided East London tones, the film smartly introduces a sense of fate. But amongst all the more obvious Easter Eggs and references, there are some that are a bit better hidden. Here are our favourites.

Opening Titles

Not only is there a reference to the great Richard M Sherman, who is credited as music consultant on the film – he wrote the score of the original film with his brother, Robert – but the paintings of London the opening titles play out against are reminiscent of Bert’s street paintings from the first film. You know, the ones Mary Poppins magically transports her, Bert and the Banks children into? Grown-up Michael Banks is a struggling artist too – and clearly learned a thing or two from Bert. It’s one of many ways the sequel mirrors the original.

Robin Redbreast

If you were expecting to see Mary Poppins’ famous daisy- and cherry-adorned hat, at first glance you might be disappointed. That’s until you realise that the flowers and fruit have been replaced by a robin – a cute callback to the robin Julie Andrews’ Mary Poppins duets with during her rendition of “A Spoonful of Sugar” in the first film.

Another Very Famous Musical

Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Jack the lamplighter in Mary Poppins Returns. He’s also the mastermind behind stage musical mega-success Hamilton. It’s surely no coincidence that one of the lawyers working for Colin Firth’s William Wetherall Wilkins at the Fidelity Feduciary Bank is called Hamilton Gooding?

Snowy Scene

When Michael and Jane are searching for the shares certificate in the attic of 17 Cherry Tree Lane, Michael picks up a snowglobe and says: “I honestly can’t remember why we kept most of this stuff to begin with.” It’s just before he picks up his old childhood kite from the first, which is adorned with his mother’s old Votes for Women sash. It’s the same snowglobe from the “Feed the Birds” sequence in the original film featuring a snowy St Paul’s Cathedral.

Ceylon Tea

In the same clip, you’ll notice Michael putting the kite in a box of rubbish. The box in question is a wooden tea crate, with the words ‘Ceylon Tea’ on the outside. This recalls the story from the first film, when Mr Dawes Jr reminds George Banks of the time an official at the bank “unwisely loaned a large sum of money to finance a shipment of tea to the American colonies.” He asks Banks if he knows what happened.

“Yes, sir. Yes, I think I do,” says Banks. “As the ship lay in Boston harbor, a party of colonists, dressed as Red Indians, boarded the Bessel, behaved rudely and threw all the tea overboard. This made the tea unsuitable for drinking – even for Americans!”

The bank, at which George Banks was made a partner and Michael holds down a job as a teller, invested in tea. There’s a line about plantations of ripening tea in the “Fidelity Fiduciary Bank” song.

Annabel Banks

Michael’s only daughter is named Annabel, and she’s played by Pixie Davies in Mary Poppins Returns – but in PL Travers’ original books, Annabel is the name of Michael’s baby sister.

Weather Vane

When Mary Poppins takes the kids to visit her cousin, Topsy (Meryl Streep), look closely at the bric-a-brac in her workshop. She has the same weather vane that was prominent in the original.

Willoughby

Fans of the original film will remember Andrew, the dog who belonged to Miss Lark. In Mary Poppins Returns, Miss Lark has a new dog, Willoughby. Both dogs feature in the PL Travers’ novels – Miss Lark adopts Willoughby after Andrew communicates to Mary Poppins that he’d like a playmate.

Nellie Rubina

This one is another reference to the books. Mary Poppins sings about Nellie Rubina while performing in the Royal Doulton Music Hall. In the books, Nellie Rubina is one of two human-sized wooden dolls.

You, Jane

As the film nears its end, look closely as a blonde woman walks past 17 Cherry Tree Lane. “I’m looking for number 19,” she says. It’s Karen Dotrice, who played the young Jane Banks in the original.

Navckid Keyd

Dick Van Dyke – who of course played Bert in the original film – turns up in a cameo role towards the end of the film. He plays the part of Mr Dawes Jr, who appeared in the first film. This is also notable for the fact that Van Dyke played a heavily disguised Mr Dawes Sr in the first film after petitioning for the role. In Mary Poppins Returns, Dawes Jr attempts to tell the wooden leg joke that was pivotal to the original film but he can’t remember it.

He also tells the story of the tuppence that was the cause of George Banks losing his job in the first film. He recalls that Michael had wanted to give it to the “bird lady” but that his father invested it for him instead. The investment paid off, making Michael enough to pay off the sizeable loan that is responsible for the trouble he finds himself in.

Finally, the film’s closing credits hark back to the original’s, scrambling Dick Van Dyke’s name in exactly the same way – same font and everything – that the first film did. Navckid Keyd is the anagram that appears before the letters bounce around to reveal ‘Dick Van Dyke’.

Mary Poppins Returns hits screens in the US on December 19,  the UK on December 21 and Australia on January 1.

Buju Banton Is Released From Prison, Returns to Jamaica

Controversial dancehall and reggae star, Buju Banton, was released from prison after serving to seven years in a US Prison. Banton, born Mark Myrie, was released on December 8 and returned to Jamaica

Jamaica’s culture minister, Olivia “Babsy” Grange, reports that Banton “is now really about, from what we understand, employment of young people. If he can help shape and resocialize young people, that is something we should embrace.”

However, they won’t pull out the red carpet for his return. “We can’t give him a hero’s welcome,” says minister of national security, Horace Chang. “He committed a crime.” And yes, Grange agrees, “There’s no getting over the fact that he was convicted, but Buju was loved long before he was convicted and he will be loved just the same, even if he comes home in handcuffs.”

Banton was arrested in Miami in 2009 and convicted and sentenced to a decade in prison in 2011 on charges of possession and conspiracy to distribute of more than five kilograms of cocaine.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Gorgeous Costumes of 'Mary Poppins Returns'

If Mary Poppins ever left the nanny game, she’d be primed for a career in fashion. There’s something almost Wintour-ian about her careful posture and stern lines, but Mary Poppins is way more of an influencer than one to be influenced. As the character who first debuted in Mary Poppins will reappear on the big screen in Mary Poppins Returns, out December 19, Academy Award winning costume designer Sandy Powell had to decide how this Mary – whose reemergence is set 25 years after…

A Guide to the Enchanting Music of 'Mary Poppins Returns'

In an abandoned section of an old park in Depression-era London, with streets so dark, shadows merely shimmer like suggestions of shadows, a group of lamplighters – clad in jackets, vests, and clothes that would be almost dapper if not how worked-in they look – gather beneath streetlamps with ladders and on bicycles.

They’re performing “Trip a Little Light Fantastic” – an energetic, contagious song and dance number – the song in the forthcoming Mary…

Sarah Brightman Returns from Space Training for New Album and Tour: ‘I Needed to Earth Myself’

Sarah Brightman is making an astronomical landing with her fifteenth studio album Hymn.

After spending months in Russia training for a trip to outer space that she postponed in 2015, Brightman, 58, opened up to PEOPLE exclusively about the creation of her newest album and the planning stages of her tour.

“I needed to earth myself,” says the soprano singer. “I said I would like to do an album of songs which are full of light, full of hope. Songs that remind me of when I felt safe and familiar with things in my childhood when I sang in my church.”

“If I don’t use and I don’t convey my feelings through it, I feel depleted,” she added. “I don’t function very well and that’s the beauty of having a gift like a voice. You sort of know what to do. You know what direction to take, you know that you want to communicate through it.”

Brightman, who shot to fame after star-turning roles on Broadway musicals Cats and Phantom of the Opera, linked up with producer Frank Peterson for the album-creating process. What came out of two-and-a-half years of planning and recording was the dynamic, choir-filled album, Hymn, out on Nov. 9.

“ is about looking into the good in things because I do believe that good prevails always,” she said, adding that the word “positivity” would describe her album.

“I did experience huge amounts when I was in the space program that actually how precious everything really is on this beautiful planet and how precious that is,” she added.

Now, the “Time to Say Goodbye” vocalist is ready to take Hymn on the road later this fall for a tour that’s “going to be quite beautiful.”

“I have a lot of energy. I tend to before I go on these tours, I become more energetic,” she says. “You create a power for yourself which will protect you because when you go on tour you’re dealing with the hardship of jet lag and moving around continually.”

The “Angel of Music” singer says her set on tour will be divided into two halves. The first will feature a more retrospective aspect to Brightman’s music, which will look like “somebody who is going to the ballet or the opera.” The second will be a bit more modern and feature most of the songs off Hymn.

“I’m wearing all these amazing runway gowns, which I’ve made a little more theatrical by adding things to them. Stones, crystals, all sorts of stuff,” she says. “I’ve got a big choir behind me. Up really high. I’ve got an orchestra on one side, a band on the other side and myself in the middle.”

Brightman’s album is filled with collaborations with artists like French tenor Vincent Niclo on single “Sogni” and Japanese composer Yoshiki on the emotional “Miracle.”

“ is a really interesting guy and we got along very well,” she said. “It was a very interesting collaboration with Japan’s most famous rockstar writing a beautiful contemporary classical piece.”

Along with the collaborations, Brightman’s album jumps from classical and cinematic music to pop rhythms in a cohesive album threaded by its spiritual nature. The album also takes fans back to one of her most famous classics “Time to Say Goodbye” with Andrea Bocelli, which she recreates in a touching English rendition.

“I wrote the lyrics for it but they were very much inspired from the original Italian lyrics when translated,” she said. “It’s quite a grand song, it’s almost like an opera song, but I wanted to do this in a very intimate way.”

Fans can purchase tickets for “Hymn: Sarah Brightman in Concert” through her website.
