Scouted: Best Buy Has Various iPads on Sale Right Now In Anticipation of Next Week’s iPad Air Release

We’re heading fast toward a laptop-less, tablet- and smartphone-heavy future. Flat, portable, touchable, and sleek are some of the key features tablets are aiming for and topping that market is, as usual, Apple.

Since Apple’s announced its brand new iPad Air, we’ve been expecting to see price cuts on some mainstay iPad models and they’re here now. Through Saturday night, Best Buy is cutting prices on three different models, each a different size — the larger the iPad, the more you’re saving.

Here’s the breakdown:

9 Uplifting TED Talks by Black Women You Need to Watch Right Now

No one walks away from watching a TED Talk without being changed on some level. And one by a black woman undoubtedly doubles that impact. If you’ve already watched the previous eight TED Talks from exceptional black women we highlighted last year and you’re motivated and ready for some more leveling up, the nine we have lined up below will not disappoint.

Each talk in this roundup of influential women of power delivers thoughtful advice, insightful personal stories, and invigorating perspectives just in time for Women’s History Month. They are sure to spark change, whether in you or the women of power you share these talks with.

#MeToo founder and activist Tarana Burke delivers a searing message that #metoo is more than a moment; it’s a movement. Globe-trotting Evita Robinson, founder of the Nomadness Travel Tribe, a 20,000 strong global lifestyle brand will have you planning your next trip. Educator Dena Simmons teaches students of color how to deal with impostor syndrome. Nadine Burke Harris, California’s new surgeon general, discusses the long-term health effects of childhood trauma. And Kasiva Mutua, the Kenyan percussionist who is breaking down gender barriers each time she beats her drum by challenging the taboo against female drummers, will have you questioning why women were even banned from playing in the first place. And we’ve only named five of the nine speakers listed here.

These women are shaking the table and stirring up change while improving the world and sharing ideas that are definitely worth spreading.

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

The best designer handbags to invest in right now

From super-sized totes, bumbags and micro-pouches to timeless classics, shop our pick of the best new season designer handbags

The latest designer handbags ticking all the SS19 trends have dropped, and there’s no better time than the present to invest in one. Now I appreciate it’s a big purchase, so to save you time and effort, I’ve rounded-up the best designer handbags from the new season that suit all tastes, styles, daily needs and budgets (yes, really).

If there is one piece worthy of investment each season, it has to be a designer handbag (and if you don’t believe me, some brands like Chanel are literally a better financial investment than gold). And while many designers are on-trend with their offering, there are also some classic styles that never go out of fashion out there too.

The best arm candy for SS19 ranges from the super-sized, with the coolest carry-alls in every colour, prints and texture imaginable – of course the basket bag is back for summer – to must-have micros, the cute bags that are tiny yet perfectly formed. Invest in these for minimal effort, with maximum impact – Fendi and Jacquemus have some great picks.

We’re keeping things tonal this season and investing in some pretty arm candy in pastel shades of mint and blue, with a touch of cream and butter yellow – Strathberry and Chloé have some divine vanilla options.

If your heart is set on something a little sleeker and modern, then do check out Daniel Lee’s first two designs for Bottega Veneta: the Maxi Cabat and The Pouch are part of the SS19 collection.

You also can’t go wrong with a Loewe Gate, Mulberry Hampstead or Stella McCartney Falabella (in periwinkle blue for spring) – these beautiful bags will pay for themselves when you work out the cost per wear.

Do also check out Rixo’s new venture into handbags, they are just the right side of vintage, with gorgeous prints and gold shell hardware detailing. Finally, if you’re feeling nostalgic, do go down the retro route with a Dior saddle bag or Fendi baguette. Iconic.

Still not convinced? Keep scrolling to shop even more fabulous designer handbags.

5 Things Under $50 You Can Get Right Now To Prep Your Wardrobe For Spring

One of the ways we build our wardrobes is “upgrading”–buying better versions of things we already know we like. And the fashion industry knows this. We’ve been buying designer jeans for decades, and for a long time now, brands have been selling pretty much every basic with “lux” in front of it, from cargo pants to white tees. It sometimes seems like a race to see who can make the most expensive X.

That said, clothing in general is as inexpensive as ever. Low inflation and cheap labor have kept prices for basic consumer goods low for a long time. A Hanes 3-pack costs $ 10 in 2019 ($ 3.33/shirt), compared to a $ 5.31 retail price in 1970  ($ 34.45 in 2019 dollars) for a 3-pack of Sears t-shirts (over $ 11/shirt).

Bottom line, if you’re looking for cloth to cover your body, you can find it cheap; maybe cheaper than ever. If you’re looking for interesting things, it can be more difficult. In an era of $ 1,000 sneakers and $ 3 tshirts, what can $ 50 get you today? I did some shopping and found 10 items worth buying right now for $ 50.

The Right And Wrong Ways To Look At Food

healthy eating habits

Source: skynesher / Getty

Whether you realize it or not, you hold certain beliefs regarding food. You have general ideas about what food is, what it is not, what it should do for you, and how you should approach it. These beliefs play a role in every decision you make around food. If you carry snacks in your car, if you skip breakfast, if you only eat meals by yourself, it is these subconscious or perhaps conscious ideas revolving around food that drive those actions. If you are unhappy with the results you are seeing in your body, both how it looks and feels, making the changes you want on the outside may require changing your perspective on food. Here are the right and wrong ways to look at food.

Wrong: Food is just calories

When we think of food as just calories, we fixate on only counting calories and not considering the value of each calorie. That means we feel guilty about 700 calories no matter where they came from.

These are the jobs that get the most swipes right on dating sites

Apparently.

relationship challenge, she's all that

Dating isn’t exactly a walk in the park these days. We’re getting all too used to cushioning, ghosting, stashing and sneating, and the dating trends of 2019 don’t exactly offer a glimmer of hope, either.

And if you’re using an app to find the cherry to your bakewell, you’ll know how quickly you make your mind up about someone. Based on a bunch of pictures and a bio, we make assumptions and judgements in a matter of seconds. Enjoys brunches, lazy Sundays, and has a cute dog? Instant swipe right.

But there’s another thing we’re judging when flicking through the books for a potential partner. Apparently, their job plays an important role. When separating the wheat from the chaff so to speak, we’re reportedly drawn to some careers more than others.

According to a new survey from Badoo, the most attractive job for men is a chef and for women, a hairdresser. Participants were aged between 18 and 30, and appear to prefer more hands-on professions.

Most desirable jobs for men:

  1. Chef
  2. Engineer
  3. Entrepreneur
  4. Marketing
  5. Artist

Most desirable jobs for women:

  1. Hairdresser
  2. Nurse
  3. Lawyer
  4. Entrepreneur
  5. Teacher

It’s a different story if you talk to the masterminds over at Tinder, however. Their recent study showed that the top job for men was a pilot, and the top job for women was a physical therapist.

Just to confuse you even more, data collected from Match.com also doesn’t quite relate to its competitors, with the website claiming that the most desirable men are doctors, and women are freelancers.

So there you go.

Joe Jonas: I Knew ‘Right Away’ Nick, Priyanka ‘Were a Match Made in Heaven’

Joe Jonas Says He Knew ‘Right Away’ Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra ‘Were a Match Made in Heaven’

Their biggest fan? Joe Jonas gushed over his brother Nick Jonas’ relationship with new wife Priyanka Chopra.

“Seeing Nick’s face when he first met her and the way he talks about her, and then getting to meet her and seeing what an amazing person she is, I knew right away that they were a match made in heaven,” the DNCE frontman, 29, told Entertainment Tonight on Friday, December 7.

Joe went on to detail the couple’s wedding. “My face hurts from smiling so much,” he noted. “The ceremonies themselves were so beautiful. The Indian ceremony, for me, was something new. We were all in tears.”

Chopra, 36, and Nick, 26, tied the knot in a Western ceremony in Jodhpur, India, on December 1. They married again in a Hindu ceremony the following day.

The “Cake by the Ocean” singer, who is set to wed fiancée Sophie Turner in France in summer 2019, also spoke about how his younger sibling’s nuptials influenced his own plans. “I am [so excited],” Joe shared. “You know, I didn’t even think about it much, to be honest, because it was about them. This whole week, we just let the celebration be about Nick and Priyanka.”

The engaged pair rushed to Chopra and the “Close” singer’s defense on Wednesday, December 5, when New York magazine’s The Cut published an op-ed claiming the newlyweds “married into a fraudulent relationship” and the Quantico alum is a “scam artist.”

“This is disgusting. @TheCut should be ashamed to have someone write such evil words,” Joe tweeted. “What Nick & Pri have is Beautiful Love. Thank u, Next.”

The Game of Thrones star, 22, added in her own tweet: “This is wildly inappropriate and totally disgusting. Very disappointed that The Cut would give anyone a platform to spew such bulls—t.”

The website later removed the article and apologized.

Joe sweetly extended the Jonas charm to Chopra in an Instagram post on Thursday, December 6. “Super Married! I Love You Both!” he wrote. “Welcome to the Family Pri! Congratulations!”

She Says Michelle Obama’s Right, ‘Lean In’ Doesn’t Work All The Time, Especially For Black Women

Recently, Michelle Obama criticized Sheryl Sandberg’s “lean in” approach for women to advance in the workplace, saying “that s–t doesn’t work all the time.” But the former first lady isn’t the only one who has challenged Sandberg’s commonly referenced business motto, which puts the responsibility solely on women to take ownership of their career without mentioning the systemic barriers for women of color in the workplace.

Earlier this year, during an interview with Fast Company, Minda Harts, the founder of The Memo, dismantled a few career strategies from Sandberg’s New York Times best-seller.

“Lean In was well-intentioned and opened up the conversation, but, you cannot effectively talk about leaning in for black or brown women without discussing the role that race plays and the barriers to even enter the room for a seat at the table,” said Harts. “Lean In didn’t talk about race and it was written from a white-privileged women’s perspective for predominately other white women. One size doesn’t fit all.”

Black and Brown Women Still Vie for Equal Footing

For over three years, Harts has lead the charge to help women of color secure the seat while challenging companies to acknowledge their systemic racism and how that plays into career advancement opportunities. “Many black and brown women are still trying to earn equal pay, access to good education and healthcare,” she said. “There are so many barriers in place. Lean In once again affirms that it’s up to us to change societal norms. Black and brown women have always been leaning in, so, what do you do when you lean into a system that doesn’t recognize you? That is where we are now. For women of color to get ahead, it will require intentional solutions from our employers.”

Lean in

Minda Harts, Founder of The Memo

Beyond highlighting problems, Harts is a solutions-driven career revolutionary who is using every possible platform to help women prepare for their seat at the table. Earlier this year, she endowed a scholarship at her undergraduate institution for first-generation women of color students and put it in her mother’s name to honor her. Along with her co-founder Lauren Broussard, she created The Memo, a career development platform that provides access to career boot camps, resources, and real-world career advice. She also hosts a weekly podcast called Secure “The Seat.”

To help drive real change within companies and organizations that want to invest in women of color, Harts recently created The Women of Color Equity Initiative. “I am tired of us consistently falling below 10% in most of those workplace statistics,” says Hart. “Hundreds of women of color want access to leadership opportunities and they’ve added their name to the WOC equity career-sourcing database. I’m also partnering with companies and organizations who want to intentionally hire women of color to fill open leadership roles.”

“Part of The WOC Equity Initiative is making sure a cultural shift takes place from the top down. This will require real systems change,” she continues. “This isn’t a ‘binder full of women,’ this is a partnership to create equity once they are hired and a roadmap to the C-suite. I don’t want a woman to get hired and she’s miserable because she’s the only one or dealing with microaggressions. We are too educated and experienced to let our expertise go dormant. I don’t want my sisters to lean out because companies won’t lean into them. We have worked too hard to lean out now.”

Freeform’s newest poster for <em>Life-Size 2</em> will take you right back to Sunnyvale

Freeform just released the first poster for the highly anticipated Life-Size 2. The film, which joins Freeform’s 25 Days of Christmas as an original feature, will premiere on Sunday, December 2nd. In the whimsical poster, Tyra Banks, who plays main character Eve, is peeking into a dollhouse.

Check out the poster for Life-Size 2 below.

Freeform captioned the photo, “Our favorite doll returns.”

Life-Size 2 is the sequel to Disney Channel’s fantasy comedy film Life-Size. The 2000 film follows teen Casey Stuart (Lindsay Lohan), who tries to resurrect her mother back from the dead with a spell book. The spell goes awry, and she accidentally brings to life a plastic toy doll, Eve (Banks), instead.

News of a Life-Size sequel first broke in December 2015. In an interview with Hollywood Life, Banks confirmed she had read many drafts for the film. She said:

“We have gotten many drafts of scripts, and the one thing I can say is that to the Disney Channel executives, Life-Size is so precious. It’s like their baby, so they just want it perfect. They keep re-doing it, and re-doing it, and re-doing the script, and we are in another round of redos.”

Fast forward to April 2017, and fans got confirmation that the sequel was officially happening. Many speculated over whether Lohan would reprise her role as Casey Stuart. And in April of this year, during an appearance on Steve, Banks confirmed that Lohan was, in fact, returning. However, the Mean Girls actress has been noticeably MIA in all the Freeform promos.

Life-Size 2 will follow Grace (Grown-ish’s Francia Raisa), a CEO of a toy company who faces struggles in her job. Grace’s old doll, Eve (Tyra Banks), awakens to help get her life back on track.

How To Find The Right Colors For Your Skin Tone

Learn how you can choose the best colors for your skin tone no matter if you have a lighter, a medium, or a darker skin tone.

Wear Colors You Truly Like No Matter Your Skin Tone

I’m a firm believer in the concept of wearing colors you truly like because if there’s a favorite color you have and you wear it, you wear it with confidence and it shows. Now that being said, you probably noticed that some colors look more pleasing to others than when you wear them, however, most men don’t know why it’s that way and how they can change it.

Even if you have a favorite color that naturally is not suited to your skin tone, you can still wear it, you may just have to move it to a different location in your outfit. Alan Flusser, one of the best-selling menswear authors of all time reminds us that the goal of color is to make a person look to your face and not to distract from it.

Apparel arts magazine

Apparel arts magazine

By the way, a classic jacket, the shirt collar, as well as the tie create triangles that are supposed to emphasize your face but more about those things in a different article. During the heydays of classic men’s clothing in the 1930’s in the US, men’s magazines and trade magazines such as Esquire or Apparel Arts would actually have little tables with colors and patterns as well as skin tones for men so they could easily figure out what would work for them and what would flatter them. Of course, these stories also helped introduce new colors for the season and to simply expand the range of colors men would be comfortable wearing.

Finding your skin tone

Finding your skin tone

What Exactly Is Skin Tone?

To put it simply, skin tone is the natural color of your skin. Now that sounds very obvious, however, the color can change constantly depending whether it is the winter or the summer. Now the term skin tone also refers to the undertone of your skin, not just the skin color. Often, they’re used interchangeably but they’re slightly different.

Basically, there are two ways to think about skin tone and dressing. One is the lightness and darkness of your skin, the other one is the undertone. So whether your skin is light, medium, or dark color, it’s pretty easy to figure out. Personally, I’m more in the medium spectrum because my mom is from Germany, she’s from the lighter spectrum and my dad is from Brazil and he’s on a darker, medium spectrum.

Warm, neutral, and cool, undertone

Warm, neutral, and cool, undertone

Finding Your Undertone Is Equally Important

It’s a little more difficult to determine your undertone; basically, there are three skin undertones.

  • Warm Undertone. Warm means there is a greenish-yellowish or peachy undertone.
  • Cool Undertone. Cool means your skin has a bluish undertone.
  • Neutral Undertone. Neutral undertone means you can’t really discern if there’s a greenish, bluish, golden, or yellowish undertone and there’s simply nothing present that you can make out, that’s okay, it exists, it’s simply a neutral skin undertone.

Now, determining your skin undertone is not hard science but there are different ways to determine that. First of all, look at your wrist area. If you look closely, you can see that I have a greenish and yellowish undertone. Just look at the veins, there’s blue, there’s green, there’s yellow which means I’m a warm undertone.

Paper test to determine your skin undertone

Paper test to determine your skin undertone

Now if that test doesn’t help you, you can just take a white piece of paper, hold it next to your face, and take a look in the mirror. Just quickly look at it and observe what color you see at a glance. Is it yellow? Is it green? Is it blue? Is it none of the above? The important thing is you have to do it with a mirror outside in daylight or with lamps that are adjusted for daylight in a color temperature because traditionally, most interior lamps are warmer and fall in a yellow spectrum so even though you might be a cooler tone, in a mirror you will look like you’re a warm tone and that would be wrong and lead to the wrong outfit combinations.

Last but not the least, you could also look at your skin type and the history you have with sunburn. If you’re out in the sun without sunscreen, do you get burned very easily or very slowly? If your skin is prone to burning and it doesn’t tan, you’re a cool undertone. On the other hand, if you don’t need sunscreen and you tan very easily, you’re definitely a warm undertone. Naturally, it’s best to always wear sunscreen no matter if you’re a cool or a warm skin type simply because you want to avoid skin cancer. Again, the best way to do that is under natural daylight because the interior light from bulbs in the house can change the results and how they’re perceived.

How Do You Find The Best Colors That Work For You?

So by now, you should have determined your skin undertone. Now that you have that, how do we actually find the best color for it? Basically, it again comes down to two things. So first let’s talk about the colors for different skin undertones.

Charcoal brown is an acceptable color

Charcoal brown is an acceptable color for warm undertones

Warm Skin Undertone

If you’re a warm skin undertone just like I am, you can really wear earth colors very well and it will always look good on you. By that, I mean the colors of brown, green, warm red, mustard yellow, and anything that is quite warm and natural. Likewise, neutrals like beige and cream that are softer will really work for you.

In terms of the metal color, gold is the way to go. Gold is always flattering but I still wear silver and platinum jewelry simply because I like it and for different outfits, it works better in my opinion.

So don’t let those colors that work well for you dictate what you wear and not wear but much rather look at them in a way that they help you bring out the best in you and the way you look. Instead, try to incorporate those colors more into your outfit whether it’s in your accessories, or in your jackets, maybe in your shirt, or in your shoes, and that way, you’ll just achieve an overall better result.

Cool Skin Undertone

If you have a cool undertone, look at shades of blue, purple, and green, they will work really well for you especially if you choose pastels. So think about a pastel blue, pastel green, maybe pastel pink, or pastel lavender, those are really great colors. In terms of metals, silver or platinum would likely work better for you and so when in doubt, go with that metal color.

Neutral Skin Undertone

Now, if you’re neither a warm nor a cool skin tone, you get the best of both worlds meaning you can wear basically all the colors and it will still work for you, isn’t that great? Now does it mean you can wear anything? No, because you also have to consider the contrast levels.

Universally Flattering Colors

No matter what skin type you are, there are three colors that are considered to be universally flattering. They include eggplant which is kind of really dark purple, a true red which is not burgundy but lighter and brighter, as well as green. Now, in classic menswear showing up in a teal suit with red shoes and an eggplant tie will really not be your best choice and instead, it pays to use those colors and incorporate them into your accessories.

First up, think about socks. You can have red socks or you can have teal socks with a purple stripe that almost looks like eggplant or you can have red and blue tones or red and brown that comes out like an eggplant color and those are really good ways to incorporate those colors, make your outfit unique yet flattering.

Washed Out Colors

Now when it comes to colors, you may have heard of the concept of washed out colors. Just think about a washed pair of denim that used to be really dark blue but you’ve washed it so much that now it’s just a faint blue color and it just doesn’t look new anymore and you don’t want to wear it. The same concept can be transitioned to humans and your face.

The idea is that if you have the wrong colors next to your face, it makes your skin colors look washed out in a negative way. If I wear a light blue shirt with a light gray jacket, my skin tone looks very different than if I wear a cream or off-white shirt with a dark brown jacket.

Contrast Is Key

Do not wear a black jacket with a white shirt if you have a light skin tone

Do not wear a black jacket with a white shirt if you have a light skin tone

As I mentioned before, apart from color, it’s also important to look at the contrast. For most people, it pays not to go extreme with the contrast but it’s important to maintain some element of it. What I mean by that, for example, if you have a lighter skin tone, it pays to go with a lower contrast. Don’t wear a black jacket with a white shirt because that’s just too strong. Instead, maybe go with a light blue shirt and a medium gray suit that will flatter your skin tone much more.

For medium skin tone, you want to also avoid high contrasts

For medium skin tone, you want to also avoid high contrasts

Now if you’re a medium skin tone just like I am, you still want to avoid these really high contrast outfits of black and white or navy and white. A navy and a lighter shade of white can work for you. On the other hand, you also don’t want to go with pastel tones that are too close to your skin tone because not enough contrast is not flattering either.

Apart from that, you can play a lot with contrast. I can, for example, wear a white shirt with maybe a charcoal suit or a gray flannel suit that will still look good at the same time, I can wear a light blue shirt with it and it’s less of a contrast but it still works for me.

Washed out look - Not a flattering look for darker skin tones

Washed out look – Not a flattering look for darker skin tones

Overall, if you have darker skin tones, you can really wear high contrast outfits. Navy suits, white shirts, that’s something that really works for you but definitely avoid pairing a light blue shirt with a light gray suit because it makes you look washed out.

Tips For Selecting Clothes Perfect For Your Skin Tone

  1. Identify Color Ranges That Work For You Again, you don’t have to just choose colors from that spectrum but it pays to look at those colors that work for you and then maybe choose variations of it. For example, if green is one of those colors, you can think of paler greens maybe for shirts, maybe for socks, maybe you can incorporate darker greens into your tie and to your pocket square.
  2. When putting together an outfit, color choices are most impactful with the colors that are closest to your face and your skin. So that means a shirt, tie, and jacket. Obviously, it can be tough if white and stark contrasts don’t work for you yet in a business wardrobe, white is really the number-one requirement. In those cases, you can still wear white shirts. Just make sure you wear them with a necktie that covers up part of the shirt and maybe go with a jacket that has a higher button stance or maybe a double-breasted jacket that covers more of the shirt front so you see less of it and therefore, it works in your favor.
  3. If you’re into hats, they’re also right next to your face so make sure you get the colors right. For example with my skin tone, a brown hat or a navy hat will look better than a      black hat or a gray hat. That being said, if the occasion calls for it, I still wear a black hat or a gray hat because it may work well with my suit and you can play with it and use it as a guideline, not as an absolute.
  4. If you want to wear colors that fall outside of your color spectrum, try to keep them away from your face and you can go with your pants, maybe your cufflinks, your socks, your pocket square. Personally, for example, I would not wear a khaki jacket because it would not be contrasting enough with my skin tone so I wear khaki slacks all the time but never as a jacket or suit.
  5. Finally to conclude, keep in mind that you can still wear the colors that you like. Don’t let skin tones and undertones dictate the only colors you wear and keep in mind that contrast is always key.

What Neil Armstrong Biopic First Man Gets Right and Wrong About the Moon Landing

There are two ways of talking about the historical accuracy of First Man, the Damien Chazelle biopic of Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong, starring Ryan Gosling: the easy way and the hard way. The hard way is to explore all of the things the movie got right — which is a very, very long list. The easy way is to discuss the things it got wrong, which you could count on one hand — literally.

It is one of the many triumphs of First Man that it tells an exceedingly complicated story of an exceedingly complicated man — a story populated by dozens of other important figures — and does so almost entirely without eliding or streamlining the truth, or worse, inventing things completely. A lot of the credit for that accuracy goes to the diligence of James R. Hansen, the author of the First Man biography, and Josh Singer, who adapted the book for the screen. It says something too that the few mistakes First Man does make are relatively small-bore stuff.

One of those blunders appears early, in the very first moments of the movie, during the scene of a harrowing flight Armstrong took in an X-15 rocket plane in 1961. The scene is true to what happened: Armstrong’s violent ride into the stratosphere, more than 20 miles above the ground, which took a nasty turn when he nearly couldn’t return to Earth as the plane began “ballooning,” or bouncing off the top of the atmosphere rather than slicing back into it. The scene is true too to the claustrophobic look of the X-15 cockpit. What isn’t so true is when we look out the window at the wispy carpet of clouds just below Armstrong’s wings — a lovely enough scene, except that at 120,000 feet, Armstrong was at about twice the altitude at which even the highest clouds form. Minor glitch, surely, except that coming in the film’s opening act, it doesn’t inspire confidence.

Read more: First Man Doesn’t Quite Live Up to Ryan Gosling’s Thoughtful Neil Armstrong Performance

The good news is you have to wait a long time to have your confidence shaken even a little again. That happens during the flight of Gemini 8 — Armstrong’s first trip into space, and nearly his last, as the spacecraft spun wildly out of control. This time the problem was in the cockpit, which was rendered with exacting accuracy except for the fact that someone on-set really needed to give it a quick scrub-down first.

All of America’s early spacecraft — Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, the lunar module — were single-use ships. They had never been flown before the day of launch, and would never be flown again. As a result, they all had a certain straight-from-the-showroom look to them. According to Jim Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13, they even had something of a new-car smell. In the movie, however, Gemini 8’s interior has a Millennium Falcon feel, with grime and even a bit of rust on some of its switches. The same is true later when we see the interior of the lunar module in which Armstrong and crew-mate Buzz Aldrin flew down to the lunar surface.

“By the time we got back to Earth, the spacecraft did look pretty dirty,” says Al Worden, command module pilot of the Apollo 15 lunar mission, who was a consultant on the movie. No doubt, but not at the first moments the astronauts strapped in, and certainly not at all for Gemini 8, a mission that had to be aborted early and lasted less than eleven hours from liftoff to splashdown.

The movie strays from the truth too when Armstrong gets the news that he has been tapped to command Apollo 11, and, that if the mission goes as planned, he will become the first man on the moon. Gosling’s reaction — little more than a nod — was probably awfully close to how Armstrong took the news. But how he learned that news was wrong.

Apollo astronauts were assigned to their three-man crews sometimes years in advance. Indeed, in many cases they were on a three-plus-three flight rotation. If you flew on Apollo 8, you would serve as a back-up crew member on Apollo 11, and would return to the cockpit for Apollo 14. What no one knew at the point in the program in which the relevant scene in First Man takes place is exactly what the crews would do on their missions, since every flight was dependent on the success of the previous mission. For the two-plus years leading up to Apollo 11, the betting was that the first moon landing would not come until Apollo 12, 13 or even 14. It was only the surprise success of Apollo 8 — the first lunar orbit, which flew just eight months before Armstrong’s Apollo 11 — that accelerated the program.

Read more: Space Is Terrifying. Ryan Gosling and Damien Chazelle Prove It in First Man

Finally, poignantly, there is First Man’s tenderest scene, which takes place on the lunar surface, when Armstrong spends a few minutes alone at a formation called Little West Crater, something he did do in the brief two and a half hours he spent exploring the moon. (Significant spoilers follow.) The most shattering experience in Armstrong’s life, the one from which all of his later-life reserve may have flowed, was the death of his two-year-old daughter, from brain cancer, shortly before he applied to NASA’s astronaut program. In the scene following her death, we see Armstrong open his desk drawer and put away a tiny bracelet that spells out his daughter’s name, Karen, in lettered beads. On the moon, he opens his hand to reveal the bracelet and drops it into the crater, where it will rest forever.

There is no historical record that Armstrong did any such thing, but some signs suggest he did. Astronauts flew with what was known as a PPK, or personal preference kit, which contained any sentimental or otherwise non-regulation items they wanted to bring with them. Those items may have been personal, but the astronauts were required to file a manifest detailing precisely what their PPK contained. Armstrong’s has since gone missing.

“Hansen asked Armstrong for his PPK manifest and he said he lost it,” says Singer, “which was very unlike Neil, who was a pack rat.” Hansen then asked Armstrong’s sister, June, if he might have left something of Karen’s on the moon. Says Singer: “She teared up and said, ‘Oh, I dearly hope so.’”

Audiences could be forgiven for hoping so too. Perhaps the most important item on the long, long list of things First Man gets right is the privately borne pain Armstrong seemed to carry with him his entire life. It would be nice to think that if he found a way to honor that pain, all alone at a spot no human being had ever been before, it at last brought him some much-deserved relief.

New California Law Forces Board Diversity, But Is It Right?

In a push to further corporate board diversity, California has enacted new legislation requiring publicly-traded firms in the state to have at least one woman on the board of directors.

Companies have until the end of 2019 to comply or face penalties. The more directors on the board, the more women the companies are required to add. For example, if a business has five directors, the law says it must add two women by 2021—six or more directors, then three women must be added to the board.

According to CNN, it’s the first law of such kind in the United States, but similar legislation exists in Europe.

There has been a recent focus on not just diversifying companies at the executive level, but also in the boardroom.

Keeping Tabs on Board Diversity for Over Half a Decade

A recent 2017 Deloitte survey revealed “90% of directors indicate that they want greater diversity, approximately half of the surveyed corporations ‘lack a clear process for recruiting candidates with diverse skill sets or new perspectives.’ And despite the fact that more than 90% of the respondents cite that greater board diversity would improve innovation, disruption, and overall business performance, only 16% view lack of diversity among the top challenges in enlisting new board members or succession planning,” writes Black Enterprise SVP/editor-in-chief Derek T. Dingle.

Over the past six years, Black Enterprise has identified African Americans who serve on the boards of America’s largest publicly-traded corporations. As part of our examination, we have, for the second time, reviewed the entire universe of Standard & Poor’s 500 companies to gain a more thorough assessment of boardroom diversity. As such, we have witnessed an expansion in the membership of African American board members who comprise our exclusive Black Enterprise Registry of Corporate Directors.

The latest issue of Black Enterprise magazine profiles two black women corporate directors; Lisa Wardell, is the only black woman to serve as CEO in a Fortune 1000 company, Adtalem Global Education, formerly The DeVry Education Group. She sits on that company’s board and was just appointed to Lowe’s board.

Tracy Travis, chief financial officer of The Estée Lauder Cos., sits on the board of Accenture and previously for Campbell Soup and Jo-Ann Stores.

Black Enterprise Magazine July/August 2018 Issue

Lisa Wardell, left, an Tracey Travis on the July-August cover of Black Enterprise Magazine

“I had just assumed a corporate CFO role, and I had been working with a headhunting firm to staff my team, and so the headhunter at the time said, “Have you ever thought about being on a board?” Some months went by and I used that opportunity and took some courses from the National Association of Corporate Directors to certify myself in some of the areas of board [service], like compensation committee, strategy, etc.,” Travis said in the article.

While many corporate directors subscribe to the idea of more diverse boards, not everyone agrees mandating companies is the way to go.

Is It Diversity Only for White Women?

The California Chamber of Commerce opposes the law citing it violates “the independent voting rights of corporate boards and force companies to discriminate against qualified men,” The Tribune reports.

Trump-appointed SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce also criticized the law. “Opening such a wide door introduces uncertainty and political influence into corporate operations,” she said at a conference.

And does this law in any way help get more black and brown people onto corporate boards? One of the California Chamber of Commerce’s concerns about this legislation is it prioritizes gender over other aspects of diversity, reports CNBC. Some may feel this will only put more white women on boards.

While there remains a lack of representation of women on boards, the number of black men and women corporate directors are even smaller.

Women’s presence on boards have been increasing albeit progress has been slow and incremental. Women make up about 22% of Fortune 500 boards.

People of color on boards are scarcer. In 2017, African-Americans accounted for 10.9% of new corporate directors.

Part of the problem with getting more people of color on boards is companies often want to appoint those at the c-suite level—preferably CEOs–to boards.

In the last few years, the number of black CEOs of publicly-traded companies has dwindled with several high profile business leaders stepping down from their positions, including Xerox’s Ursula Burns and former AMEX CEO Ken Chenault.

Joseph Grundfest, co-director of the Rock Center on Corporate Governance at Stanford University and a member of Directors & Boards editorial advisory board says the legislation is ‘“well intentioned,” but maintains it “will not achieve its intended effect.” It will, he adds, only lead to a trivial gain of board seats for women, “but increase the risk of judicial rulings inimical to broader affirmative action initiatives.”
