Diana Ross Had A ‘Flying While Black’ Moment

Diana Ross had a not-so-pleasant experience at the airport over the weekend. The legendary singer revealed in a series of tweets Sunday that she felt “violated” by a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer while she was flying out of the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Ross, who performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Saturday, said the experience was so bad that it made her “want to cry.”

In another tweet, the 75-year-old icon wrote, “on one hand I’m treated like royalty in New Orleans and at the airport I was treated like s—t.”

A TSA spokesperson released a statement in response to the incident, saying they have reviewed surveillance footage of Ross’ pat-down search and found that the agents involved “followed all protocols,” reports Entertainment Tonight.

“TSA is committed to ensuring all travelers are treated with respect and courtesy. TSA is aware of concerns presented by Diana Ross about her screening experience at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport this morning. Initial review of CCTV indicates that the officers involved with Ms. Ross’s screening correctly followed all protocols, however, TSA will continue to investigate the matter further. We encourage Ms. Ross to reach out to TSA so we can further explain our procedures, designed to protect travelers from a persistent threat.”

Ross is one of several famed black women who has called out the TSA in recent years. In December 2016, political commentator and media personality Angela Rye shared a video on Twitter of TSA giving her a pat-down. Rye, who appeared to get emotional in the video, said she was humiliated by the procedure. Likewise, Solange Knowles tweeted back in 2012 about enduring a TSA hair search through her curly mane. The “Don’t Touch My Hair” singer quipped that the search was an example of “Discrim-FRO-nation.”

TSA Hair Bias

Earlier this year, a report by ProPublica revealed that many black women who have been subjected to hair pat-downs have felt singled out. A survey conducted in March by the publication found that a majority of travelers who’ve experienced hair searches were women of color. Many described the searches as intrusive and disrespectful.

Some TSA agents, however, insist that they’re not racially-profiling women of color for additional security searches. Rather, the TSA full-body machines may be biased against black women’s hair textures and styles. “With black females, the scanner alarms more because they have thicker hair; many times they have braids or dreadlocks,” an unnamed TSA officer who works at a Texas airport told ProPublica. “Maybe, down the line, they will be redesigning the technology, so it can tell apart what’s a real threat and what is not. But, for now, we officers have to do what the machine can’t.”

TSA said in a statement that they are “reviewing additional options for the screening of hair.”

Tracee Ellis Ross, Gabrielle Union & Tessa Thompson Among Actors Protesting Controversial Georgia Abortion Bill

Forces in Hollywood are fighting back with economic power to protest a controversial abortion bill which recently passed in Georgia’s legislature on Friday.

The “fetal heartbeat bill” or formally, the “Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act” (HB 481) would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can take place as early as weeks 20 into pregnancy, according to the Associated Press.

The measure passed the by 92 votes, just one vote more than the majority threshold needed to pass out of the 180-member House, the AP reports.

It is one of the most restrictive abortion bills to pass and is expected to be signed into law by the state’s newly elected Governor, Brian Kemp. As you may recall, Kemp ran against Stacey Abrams in a contentious gubernatorial race last fall.

The bill is a direct departure from the state’s current abortion policy, which allows women to undergo an abortion up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The only exception is for victims of incest and rape, who would still be allowed to undergo an abortion up to 20 weeks, if a formal police report can be produced, and or to save the life of the mother.

Abortion rights activists also signal to a larger fear that the bill could trigger a Supreme Court hearing to overlook federal protections for abortions, most notably Roe vs. Wade, the landmark legislation which established a woman’s right to a legal abortion.

After news spread of the bill passing the vote, Abrams tweeted the following:

“With one horrible exception, Georgia didn’t jeopardize stability, opportunity and leadership for dangerous legislation that treats the lives of women as political pawns.”

“I’ve spoken to Republicans and business leaders (not necessarily the same thing) in the last few days who dismiss the harm of #HB481 as overwrought or, more simply, irrelevant. Because women’s healthcare isn’t their concern. Besides, they say, the courts will stop it,” Abrams wrote.

The legislation created a strong sense of concern among Hollywood’s top movers and shakers, who are threatening to pull production processes in Georgia, a state which has serve as a filming hub for multiple blockbuster movies and shows. Georgia is now the third largest production center behind California and New York.

According to Kemp who shared numbers an event last month, the film industry employs 200,000 Georgians and brings in more than $ 60 billion of economic revenue for the state, CBS News reports.

A memo by the Writer’s Guild Association, petitioned by actress Alyssa Milano, includes a group of over 100 actors who signed their names in protest if Governor Kemp signs the bill into law. Among them were several actors and actresses of color including Uzo Udobo, Tracee Elliss Ross, Gabrielle Union, Rashida Jones, Zoe Kravitz and Don Cheadle.

Milano tweeted a full list of all the actors and Hollywood personas who are against the bill.

The state also faces a legal battle from the ACLU of Georgia, who have promised to challenge the bill in court and challenges from reputable medical associations including the  Medical Association of Georgia and the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians.

Mississippi and Kentucky have recently signed similar legislation into law, though they have struggled with ways successfully implement it. And lawmakers in Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina and Ohio have eyed similar legislation to bring to the table.

The bill will undoubtedly have devastating effects on Black women and women from undeserved communities. The infant mortality death rate in Georgia is one of the highest in the nation, a health crisis which routinely affects the lives of Black women who continue to die due to insufficient medical attention during and after their pregnancies.

Diana Ross celebrated her 75th birthday at the 2019 Grammys like a living legend should

“Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday to me!”

It’s hard to believe that Ms. Diana Ross is turning 75 in March, but her performance at the 2019 Grammys is certainly the most appropriate way for the diva to celebrate. After a sweet introduction from her admiring young grandson, The Supremes songstress hit the stage in a flowing red gown fit for a fairy godmother. Ross broke into a medley of hit songs from her career with Motown Records, illustrating that her gifts to the world of music span decades. Starting with 1993’s “The Best Years of My Life,” she transitioned into 1970’s “Reach Out And Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” and was soon surrounded by her family in the audience, including daughter and actress Tracee Ellis Ross.

Ross ended the performance with a short speech, reminiscent of the spoken interludes with which Supremes fans are familiar. In addition to emphatically wishing herself happy birthday over a month early on television (goals), she delivered motivational words to the audience that touched on the transformative power of music—a tone set by Michelle Obama earlier in the evening:

“So much love in this room. Together we have no limits…There’s only success ahead, and you can lead the way. Learn, dream, unlock new doors, all is possible, all is possible with music and with you.”

Diana Ross was the lead singer of ’60s Motown girl group, The Supremes, alongside groupmates Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. After going solo in 1969, she scored multiple number one hits (including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”) and earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Sings The Blues.

The Recording Academy tweeted that the performance was meant to “[honor] her landmark career and contributions to music.” Happy birthday to Ms. Diana Ross, indeed.

The magic of Diana Ross will be honored with a year-long Diamond Diana Celebration, marking the 75th birthday of the music legend.

According to a press release, Fathom Events will launch the festivities on her birthday, March 26, with an exclusive two-day, global theatrical release of “Diana Ross: Her Life, Love and Legacy featuring Diana Ross: Live in Central Park.” The iconic concert was documented in July 1983 and will screen across North America, South America, Europe and Australia (additional dates vary by territory).

The event is executive produced by Ms. Ross and this new presentation of the doc will feature never-before-seen footage with heartfelt messages from the Ross family, including sons Ross and Evan and daughters Rhonda and Chudney, with Tracee Ellis Ross.

“I am so appreciative of Fathom Events for presenting this screening,” said Ms. Ross. “It is one of the most significant and moving and memorable moments of my career. It makes me want to DO IT AGAIN!”

“Diana Ross: Live in Central Park” was filmed over the course of two days when nearly 1.2 million people united on the Great Lawn of Central Park to experience a once-a-in-a-lifetime live moment.

“Hundreds of thousands of fans gathered in New York City during the summer of 1983, becoming a part of music history,” said Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt. “Now a new generation of fans will have the opportunity to witness one of the world’s largest outdoor concerts from their local cinema and relive that momentous time.”

More details, including screening times, locations and ticketing, will be announced in early 2019.
