Kia’s ‘spicy’ electric concept car makes an over-the-top debut at NY Auto Show

TwitterFacebook

Kia’s new electric car is called the Niro EV. Now its electric concept car is the HabaNiro. Get it?

If the name is already too much, you won’t be able to handle the ridiculous details about the crossover compact SUV shown at the New York International Auto Show Wednesday.

First, the not-so-hot-and-spicy specs: it’s an all-electric, all-wheel drive, four-seater with 300-mile range and full autonomy capability with butterfly-wing doors.

While the HabaNiro is just an idea, it could pave the way for future electric vehicles beyond the Niro, which recently went all electric after debuting as a hybrid vehicle a few years ago. Read more…

Democrats Keep Rejecting Corporate PAC Money. But Is It Just for Show?

From former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, who is making a bid for the U.S. Senate, to presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, the refrain du jour among 2020 Democratic presidential candidates seems to be a pledge to swear off donations from corporate political action committees (PACs). It’s a good sound bite to drop on the campaign trail: rejecting corporate and special interest money. But does it really matter on paper?

Steven Billet, who oversees a master’s program in legislative affairs at George Washington University, says candidates who refuse corporate PAC money are basically “giving the sleeves out of their vest.”

“They are giving up nothing because they wouldn’t have gotten much corporate PAC money,” Billet tells Fortune.

A corporate PAC, a type of PAC that raises money in the name of a company, can contribute up to $ 5,000 to a candidate’s campaign per election. To put this in perspective, an individual donor can donate up to $ 2,800 of personal money, and a couple can give up to $ 5,600. So, if a candidate refuses $ 5,000 from a corporate PAC, they could potentially get the same amount from a private donor.

“Corporate PAC contributions are not a big piece of the pie for major candidates,” says Andrew Mayersohn, a researcher at the Center for Responsive Politics. “There just aren’t enough corporate PACs out there to fund much of an eight-figure senate campaign, let alone a presidential campaign.”

And, according to Mayersohn, corporate PACs specifically “aren’t particularly ideological,” so they tend to give money to incumbents, rather than candidates in open primaries.

“Most corporate PACs don’t make direct contributions to presidential candidates,” he says, “especially when there’s a primary where you don’t know what the outcome will be.”

And even when corporate PACs do give money to a candidate, the sum pales in comparison to other contributions. In the 2016 presidential election, for example, Hillary Clinton raised around $ 250,000 from corporate PACs–constituting less than 0.5% of the total money she raised, data analyst Brendan Glavin told Marketplace. That number was even smaller for then-candidate Donald Trump: $ 26,000 or 0.01% of his total fundraising.

Finding the Loopholes

While corporate PACs might not donate money to a specific candidate who doesn’t want them, they can still donate to a political party. A candidate like Warren could reject the corporate and special interest money, but that doesn’t mean the Democratic Party as a whole will do the same. Money that comes through the party could end up being used to support an individual candidate or to sponsor political events.

But perhaps the easiest workaround is that people who work for corporations can donate on an individual basis, money that many candidates gladly continue to accept. In some cases, candidates may even seek out money from a company’s executives on an individual basis.

Michael Williams, founder of the public policy and communications consulting firm The Williams Group, calls it a “sick irony” that candidates will turn away lobbyist or corporate PAC money, while continuing to accept money from executives at the same companies.

“What’s the difference? If you won’t take a particular bank’s money, but you’ll take the bank executive’s money?” Williams tells Fortune. “Are you really materially changing anything?”

Williams says doing so only perpetuates the myth that money influences policy. If a candidate is completely opposed to an industry, he says, those corporations won’t give them money because they don’t expect money to change a candidate’s position.

“I don’t know anyone who was a ‘no’ on something until they got a contribution and then became a ‘yes,’” he says.

And these private donations tend to add up much more quickly than those from a corporate PAC. Unlike individual contribution limits, which have grown over time, corporate PACs continue to face the $ 5,000 per candidate donation limit–a figure that hasn’t changed since 1974. As such, the total contributions from individuals have skyrocketed as compared to those from PACs.

According to 2017-18 data from OpenSecrets, corporate PAC donations to Democrats totaled $ 149,426,431, while business donations from individuals to Democrats totaled $ 920,808,050–more than six times the total given by PACs.

FEC data for the 2016 presidential election shows that corporate PAC donations to Democratic presidential candidates totaled $ 942,116, and independent expenditures for non-political committees totaled $ 4,582,471.

But not everyone feels rejecting corporate PAC money is misguided. At the very least, the move could be an effective branding strategy.

Brad Smith, a former FEC commissioner and the current chairman of the Institute for Free Speech, a nonprofit that advocates for loosening campaign-finance regulations, calls swearing off corporate PAC money “not meaningless, but a calculation,” and says the advantage of doing so could outweigh the loss of PAC money.

“It might even get them a net increase in contributions if it persuades more individuals to give,” Smith tells Fortune.

What about super PACs?

While not all of the Democratic candidates are aligned in this respect, many of the expected frontrunners–including Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and Elizabeth Warren–have disavowed super PACs. But this is tricky in practice.

Super PACs have only been around since 2010, but unlike other PACs, they can accept unlimited contributions from any non-foreign source and can spend unlimited amounts to influence an election–meaning that their potential power is also limitless.

Yet super PACs are intended to operate independently from a candidate: they are legally prohibited from contributing directly to a candidate or party, meaning that their funds are usually used to run ads for or against particular candidates and issues. As a result, a candidate can say that they don’t support a super PAC operating on their behalf, but in practice, there isn’t all that much they can do to stop it.

“Any candidate who swears he won’t accept super PAC money is either ignorant, or assumes the listener is ignorant,” says Smith. “A candidate cannot ‘refuse’ super PAC support. He can publicly ask a super PAC not to spend in his race, but the super PAC can choose to ignore the plea and spend whatever it wants.”

Such a claim, therefore, amounts to “grandstanding,” he says.

In addition to swearing off super PACs, some candidates–like Julian Castro, Tulsi Gabbard, Beto O’Rourke, and Elizabeth Warren–have sworn off PAC money entirely, meaning they won’t accept money from labor or ideological PACs, either. Gabbard, O’Rourke, and Warren are also joined by Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, and Amy Klobuchar in a pledge to refuse money from lobbyists.

But the pledge that might matter more than the others, according to Mayersohn, is Warren’s. Going a step further than the rest of the crowd, Warren told supporters in a February email that she would not attend high-dollar fundraisers, dinners, or cocktail receptions with donors, in order to provide “equal access.”

Looks like 2020 might become the small dollar donation election, after all.

Anna Delvey, Felicity Huffman, and Lori Loughlin Show the Serious Business of Dressing for Court

It was around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, the fifth day of the trial of Anna Sorokin, and the alleged “Soho Grifter”—accused of scamming friends, luxury hotels, and banks out of over $ 275,000—was M.I.A. from New York State Supreme Court.

Last week, GQ’s Rachel Tashjian reported that Sorokin—better known as Anna Delvey—had hired stylist Anastasia Walker to dress her for court appearances.

Delvey isn’t alone in being a public figure dressing for the dock right now: Felicity Huffman (channeling suburban drab rather than Hollywood star) and Lori Loughlin (fabulous coat, autograph signing) were both in court this week, charged in the college admissions-fraud scandal, showcasing divergent courtroom styles.

Early tests show Verizon’s new 5G network is insanely fast

Verizon 5G Speed Test

Remember how painstakingly slow the arrival of 4G LTE support felt a few years ago? Well, get ready to experience the same feeling as you wait for your carrier to roll out 5G in your area. Just like a few years ago, carriers around the world will gradually expand their new networks, starting with the busiest areas. If you’re not in one of the major cities or locations that are going to be part of the first wave of the 5G rollout, you’re surely going to envy the lucky few who get to use it. Take Verizon’s first 5G markets, including Chicago and Minneapolis, where you can already take advantage of the next-gen network. And early speed tests will tell you that you indeed have every reason to be jealous.

Birdman Addresses ‘Fake’ Breakup With Toni Braxton On ‘Wendy Williams Show’

Birdman hit up the “Wendy Williams Show” to discuss his relationship with Toni Braxton.

The hip-hop star confirmed that he and his on-again, off-again girlfriend are indeed back together after their engagement ended at the start of 2019.

As reported by MadameNoire, Wendy wasted no time asking him about their alleged breakup, the missing engagement ring and Toni’s messy money issues.

Check out excerpts from the interview below.

Wendy: She’s such a fortunate woman, a beautiful woman. Not too good with money herself.

Birdman: We not gon go there.

Wendy: We know that. Toni and I talked about it.

Birdman: If she had and will have any problems, I have enough money that she will never have a problem…Let’s correct that.

The alleged breakup

Wendy: Then I found out you broke her heart?

Birdman: Where you get that from? Social media, I guess. Me personally, I never been a man that put no energy into social media.

Wendy: Did you have a fight?

Birdman: It was cap. What I mean cap…It was fake. I don’t know how it even took place. I would never be a man to bring any of my business to social media. I’m private.

Toni losing her engagement ring

Wendy: So she loses the ring…did she wait like a month of five to tell you, cuz I would.

Birdman: She told me like a week later. She’s so G. That’s what I like about her. She keep it 100. She just told me the situation that happened with the airport. It was in her luggage or something and with the airport, the bag was left and the ring come up missing.

Wendy: Why is she not wearing her ring at the airport?

Birdman: That was my question too. But it is what it is. We’ll buy another one, ain’t no big deal.

The Cash Money co-founder also discussed his image with Wendy, noting his interest in removing the tattoos on his face.

“I didn’t want to take the [head tattoos] off, but I want to take the facials off,” Birdman said. “And I was asking my partner, 50 [Cent]… ’cause he removed his tattoos. So I wanted to go to somebody who can take these tats off my face.”

But if it’s not possible to get the removals done… “If I have to live with it, I will,” he said. “I just felt like, me being older, I would like to get it off. But if not, it is what it is.”

In his March Forbes interview, Birdman went into more detail about the image he wants to represent now.

“I just think at this point in my life, I don’t need that. That stereotypes you,” the rapper said. “It takes away from the business and certain things.

Check out the full interview via the clip above. Rapper Juvenile was also on the show but Wendy seemed more interested in chopping it up with Birdman.

How The OA Became Netflix’s Most Mysterious Show

I can’t really tell you much about The OA. Netflix has asked journalists to not reveal certain plot points before the second season of its mind-bending serialized drama premieres on March 22—but even if it hadn’t, there’s just so much about this show that remains so mysterious.

Like what I’m looking at, right now, in a small screening room on the eighth floor of Netflix’s Hollywood offices, seated next to its co-creator and star, Brit Marling. From our perch on a black leather couch, we watch this season’s dizzying seventh episode in its entirety. This is “QC,” or quality control—one last check to make sure every frame and cue is just as Marling wants it, the last step before it gets beamed onto television screens in millions of living rooms. After years of writing and starring in independent films, the reach of the streaming platform that distributes her vision remains bewitching to her. It’s something she brings up again and again: just how big it is, especially when the work, to her, is so intimate.

She turns to Blake Holland, who worked on the show with her, and shakes her head. “This is the power of group storytelling,” she says. In one scene, her character, who calls herself “the OA,” which stands for Original Angel, takes a bath and remembers being underwater in a traumatic childhood incident. They had tried many complicated visual effects to show the OA shifting from her present–day experience into memory, and eventually settled on just changing the color of the water to the blue that she remembers from her childhood. It’s a subtle but powerful trick. “It feels like the way you move through memory,” Marling says, satisfied.

She and her co-creator, Zal Batmanglij, exhaustively developed the world of the show before selling it, resulting in a multiple-network bidding war; it’s disorienting, now, to hear her talking offscreen about cuts and visual effects. They feel like such earthly concerns, while Marling, an ethereal presence in the role of a woman with divine gifts, seems so thoroughly not of this world. Neither is her show.

The first season of The OA opened with a tantalizing premise: A young woman, Prairie Johnson (Marling) returns home to her adoptive parents nearly a decade after disappearing. When she left home she was blind; now she can see. She rounds up a band of teenage boys from her neighborhood, along with a middle-aged teacher from their school and—like a suburban Scheherazade—tells them a tale over many nights of how, after a brush with death as a child, she spent years imprisoned in an under-ground bunker by a scientist obsessed with studying people who had survived near-death experiences. Eventually, she and her fellow captives discovered a series of kinetic movements, like a modern dance sequence, that, when performed together, could transport them to other dimensions.

If this sounds weird, well, it is. Viewers were divided on the show; some critics read it as another fantastical puzzle box for fans to solve, like Stranger Things or Westworld, and indeed, the show spawned endless -message-board threads unpacking its seemingly unsolvable plot. But The OA is earnest as it lays out its mythology, like it’s daring you to reconsider how much magic might be possible in the real world.

The second season takes more risks, picking up in the alternate reality that the OA and some of her friends have arrived in, and introducing a new mystery that pushes the show into noirish territory, threading the supernatural and the divine into an old-fashioned potboiler. It also features inter-dimensional travel, a mansion that drives people insane, a sinister augmented-reality video game and a giant talking octopus. The first time I watched the episode with the octopus, I didn’t get it. The second time, I still didn’t get it, but the sight of that octopus made me burst into tears for reasons I couldn’t entirely explain.

The OA
Nicola Goode—Netflix

In the airy Silver Lake writers’ room where Marling and Batmanglij sit for an interview, there are sheets of fabric covering whiteboards where the two have done a post-mortem recap of the second season, which I’m not supposed to see. “Before it reaches the world, we ask: What were the risks we took that landed, and which ones didn’t?” Marling tells me.

“It’s never the ideas themselves,” Batmanglij says. “They exist in some other space, and they’re perfect. But sometimes in the translation of the ideas, there’s a lack of clarity.” That’s what they’re trying to identify, in what Batmanglij calls the “unpasteurized” space before the show comes out and hordes of fans and critics start reacting to it.

Batmanglij and Marling met at Georgetown University, where they both studied. They went on to work together on well-received independent films including Sound of My Voice and The East—both written together, starring Marling and directed by Batmanglij. Their work is at turns dreamlike and anxious, particularly about the ways in which magnetic people wield influence.

The second season of The OA turns that lens on Silicon Valley, home to so many tech lions who have been credited with changing the world. One key story line involves a tech mogul (played by Mad Men’s Vincent Kartheiser) who has possibly nefarious aims.

“Have you seen those photos from the ’40s where people are smoking in a movie theater?” Batmanglij asks. “I think that’s how we’re going to look back at this era. In every public space, everyone has their head down on their phone. Including me.”

As they conceived of the second season, they were fascinated by San Francisco. “It’s the epicenter of technology, and has been since the Gold Rush, but it’s also a peninsula surrounded by water and huge old-growth trees,” Marling says. “We liked the idea of a narrative in which we were inside both those spaces and absorbing both of their intelligences.”

This tension—between the new and the ancient, the synthetic and the natural, the earthly and the divine—is in the DNA of the show. In the first season, a scientist was studying people who believed, rightly or not, that they had supernatural abilities; in this season, tech plutocrats may be trying to exploit them. Marling tells me she read about Maasai warriors in Africa who, when separated, would dream of one another in a particular geographical location, then wake up, start walking and eventually find each other there. “Why don’t we believe in that, but we believe in texting?” she asks. “Why do most of us hear that, cross our arms and say, ‘Ah, but did they really? Was there a white male scientist with them? How was this measured?’ We want empirical proof, and yet we send each other 1s and 0s through space all day and we just believe.”

As an Angeleno who has a collection of crystals and has visited more than one energy healer, this line of thought resonates with me—but it turns out my personal views might be wackier than either of theirs. “A lot of people dub our work as New Age,” Batmanglij says. “But for some reason, they don’t dub Stan Lee’s work that way. I don’t understand how our story can be so bonkers, but Captain Marvel isn’t. A lot of the ideas in The OA that seem outlandish are just normalizing as the years go by.”

“It only scares us,” Marling says, “because we are shamed into accepting that the only valuable intelligence is that of the Excel spreadsheet.”

Back at Netflix, as we are leaving the screening, Marling and I start chatting-—it’s meant to be just a few minutes, before we go across town to the writers’ room—but we end up talking for nearly an hour: about the development process; about how streaming services have upended the parameters of genre and form that have defined film and television for decades; about how the first season was about how trauma lives in the body; about the way science and spirituality sometimes seem like different vocabularies to describe the same phenomena; about why her show’s radical sincerity made it such a polarizing viewing experience; and about all the things that her show both does and does not say. This conversation doesn’t feel like an interview. It feels forensic: like two people interrogating why a thing works the way it does, even though she’s the one who created it and all I did was watch it. I want to understand her intentions in making this show—about what she was trying to say. But Marling insists that I have it backward: the more she told this story, the more the story had to say to her. It was more like receiving the story than anything else, she says. I believe her.

I record that conversation on my phone. But when I get home, I can’t open the audio file; it just won’t play. I try moving it onto my computer. I try to convert it, to edit it. Nothing works.

You could say my phone just glitched, and maybe it did. But to me it feels like there were other, invisible forces at play—like the purpose of that conversation was for us to really see each other, not for me to write an article. I know that sounds New Age. But Mercury’s in retrograde. Some mysteries aren’t meant to be solved.

Tracy McMillan Of OWN’s New Show ‘Family Or Fiancé’ Shares Relationship Advice

Tracy McMillan

Source: Oprah Winfrey Network / Tracy McMillan

OWN’s latest reality TV show Family Or Fiancé focuses on couples who are headed down the aisle but are having a hard time getting their family’s approval. The future newlyweds are paired in a home with their loved ones and Tracy McMillan, a relationship expert who challenges the couples to find middle ground before their wedding day.

You may know of McMillan via a viral article seven years ago titled “Why You’re Not Married” that solidified her as an expert.

We caught up with Tracy ahead of the premiere and she gave us some insight, tips and advice on relationships.

Tell us about Family Or Fiancé?

Tracy McMillan: These couples are amazing and you may not relate to every couple’s journey, but you’re going to relate to somebody in that family because you’ve been on one side of this before. You’ve either been the person where your family is not really down with BAE or you’ve been the person.

Source: OWN Communications / OWN

What were some of the exercises you did with the couples?

I meet with them every morning and I give them things to do that first of all are going to help. Like let’s say the couples haven’t met the parents, well this is going to be an icebreaker activity or an activity that’s going to show the parents something related to what their concerns are. One of the things that we do quite often on the show is play 20 questions. he family members will write down the questions that they want to know the answers to and then the other person has to answer it. And it’s anything from ‘have you been faithful’ to ‘what would you do if the baby mama came for some child support and that part of that was your money?’

What can the everyday couple do as an exercise?

We’ll have the mom and the new daughter-in-law cook a meal together. When you have to cooperate with somebody, you find out really quickly whether that person is kind of really open hearted toward you or is this just like a lot of power struggle?

Which family member is the most problematic?

TM: Mama is the most committed to a point of view. She’s the least likely to just go, ‘okay, it’s fine.’ She’s not just going to go along with something. She has a strong feeling, she becomes mama bear. You know? So it’s not that she’s a problematic, it’s that she her feelings on the strongest, she got the biggest investment.

You went viral for your piece “Why You’re Not Married,” what was that about?

Marriage is a spiritual path and if your focus is on getting something you want or you’re going to get a big wedding or you’re going to get a white dress and like marriage isn’t really going to change your life, you’re just going to be you at twice as much laundry in that it’s really about giving and receiving love.

Source: OWN Communications / OWN

What are some common problems that you see in relationships?

They don’t understand that relationships are challenging. People are like, wait, what? Why should I have these problems? This is a place where you practice loving. It’s not a place where you go to feel good and get what you want. That’s not why that other person is in that relationship to give you what you want and make you feel good. So a lot of times when people, when it stops feeling good after like the first nine months or a year, then like, yeah, I don’t think this is working. In fact, it’s, it’s working to grow you up that cause that’s what it, that’s what a relationship is all about. It’s about growing as a human.

What advice do you give couples coming off the honeymoon phase?

The thing about coming out of the honeymoon phase is first of all, to know when you’re in one and that it’s going to end. So even when you’re in it, you got to know it’s going to end. So when it ends, it’s like coming up and moving. So I brought out the airport and so it’s not like, oh shit, what just happened? It’s more like, I know it’s going to be a very different pace than this first part. It’s not going to be as easy. Relationships bring up every unresolved thing. And that starts to happen right after the honeymoon phase. So whatever you’ve got going on, whatever you brought in from childhood, it’s going to get triggered, it’s going to get triggered and then you’re going to get to deal with that.

Catch Tracy McMillan on Family Or Fiancé on OWN every Saturday night at 10pm EST.

Giorgio Armani to Stage First Resort Runway Show in Tokyo

MILAN — Giorgio Armani is the latest designer to take his resort collection on the road.
Armani is staging his first runway event for a pre-collection on May 24 in Tokyo. The venue and other particulars could not immediately be learned.
The show is to coincide with the reopening of the Giorgio Armani Tokyo flagship situated in the Ginza shopping district. The designer plans to fete the reopening the same night of the show with a cocktail event.
The store was first unveiled in 2007 inside the Armani/Ginza Tower, which features the Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani and Armani Casa collections, along with the brand’s then-first spa, an Italian restaurant and a Privé bar.
Armani last hosted a runway show in Tokyo in 2007 as part of his One Night Only series of events, parading his spring 2008 Giorgio and Emporio Armani collections. Last year the format was slated to take place in Shanghai on May 25, but was postponed for technical and logistic reasons.
Last November, Valentino staged a runway show combining for the first time its men’s and women’s pre-fall collections in Tokyo, and a few days later Dior Men showcased its first men’s pre-fall runway show with a collection designed by Kim Jones

‘The Simpsons’ Boss Al Jean: Michael Jackson Used the Show to ‘Groom Boys’

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Getty/Fox

With all due respect to series creators Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, and Sam Simon, themselves titans of comedy, the fate of The Simpsons forever shifted in 1991, when duo Al Jean and Mike Reiss took the reins.

The Harvard pals, who’d served in the show’s writers’ room since its inception, assumed the role of showrunner in Season 3, and, with classic episodes like “Flaming Moe’s” and “Homer at the Bat,” it’s since been recognized by Springfield historians as the start of the animated sitcom’s so-called “Golden Age.” Jean and Reiss would remain showrunners through Season 4, and then, following a brief stint helming The Critic, Jean returned to The Simpsons in Season 10, and then resumed running the show in Season 13—and has continued ever since.

Of course, the premiere episode of Season 3, “Stark Raving Dad,” recently made headlines when the show’s chief creative team—including Jean, who co-wrote and produced the episode with Reiss—decided to pull it after seeing the documentary Leaving Neverland, wherein James Safechuck and Wade Robson recounted, in graphic detail, the child sexual abuse they allegedly suffered at the hands of music legend Michael Jackson. Jackson provided guest vocals in the episode, playing the character of Leon Kompowsky, a burly, institutionalized man claiming he’s the pop star. The episode was penned specifically for Jackson, a fan of the show, with the icon demanding that a scene be included wherein he and Bart Simpson create a song together. In light of the documentary, the lyrics of that song seem troubling, to say the least.

Wendy Williams Lets The N-Word Slip During Taping Of Show [VIDEO]

Wendy Williams 'I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur' Winter PETA Campaign Launch

Source: Desiree Navarro / Getty

via Bossip.com:

Talk show host Wendy Williams is back on her daytime talk show throne after a brief hiatus due to health complications.

The storied entertainment journalist is already back on the hot seat, recently using some “in-group” language in front of her audience OOPS!

As always, Wendy was giving her audience the day’s drama, pouring some hot tea about Blac Chyna and her ex fling YBN Almighty Jay. The teen was allegedly assaulted and wounded during a recent trip to New York City’s iconic Fifth Avenue, the shopping Mecca of the world.

While telling the story, Wendy got so cozy she let the n-word slip.

“I just love Fifth Avenue shopping. It’s unbelievable, you n***as.”

There was an awkward pause from the audience accompanied with some awkward laughter.

“I get very comfortable talking to you,” she said after a beat.

You can watch below:

This hilarious slip up doesn’t take away from all the amazing things Wendy has been up to since her return to TV. She recently launched a drug addition hotline to help those in need.

The hotline, 1-888-5HUNTER (1-888-548-6837), is run through The Hunter Foundation in partnership with T.R.U.S.T,  the national resource hotline dedicated to those suffering from substance abuse. The hotline will be open 24 hours a day.

“We must all come together to respond to this crisis of addiction and substance abuse. Everyone is at risk from the inner cities to more affluent communities,” Williams said in a statement to the press. Williams has remained transparent about her struggle with crack and cocaine usage ten years ago.

“My family and I are very proud to partner with T.R.U.S.T. to get people the help that they so desperately need, especially if they or their families have given up hope. There is hope.”

Monthly Shots of HIV Drugs Are as Effective as Daily Pills, 2 Big Studies Show

SEATTLE (AP) — Monthly shots of HIV drugs worked as well as daily pills to control the virus that causes AIDS in two large international tests, researchers reported Thursday.

If approved by regulators in the United States and Europe, the shots would be a new option for people with HIV and could help some stay on treatment. Instead of having to remember to take pills, patients instead could get injections from a doctor or nurse each month.

“Some people will be thrilled” at the convenience, said Mitchell Warren, executive director of AVAC, an AIDS advocacy group.

Condoms remain the most widely available and inexpensive form of HIV prevention. Pills taken daily can keep HIV levels so low the virus is not transmittable to sex partners, but not everyone takes them as prescribed.

The shots could improve how well some people stick to treatment, perhaps helping those who have trouble remembering to take daily medicine to keep infection at bay.

There are other potential benefits. Getting shots at a clinic can lend more privacy to patients worried about the stigma of filling an HIV prescription at a pharmacy, said Dr. Susan Swindells of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, who presented results Thursday at an HIV conference in Seattle.

Cost will be an issue “to make sure that everyone has access to this medication,” said Dr. Hyman Scott of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, who was not part of the study. It’s not clear how much the shots would cost. HIV pills can cost a patient up to thousands of dollars monthly , depending on the drug combination, insurance coverage, rebates and discounts.

And there will be concerns about patients missing a monthly shot, which could lead to drug-resistant strains of the virus. It will be “a good option for some people,” Scott said.

Whether monthly shots will also work to protect users’ sex partners hasn’t been studied yet, but there is reason to think they will, said experts at the conference.

The shots are a long-acting combo of two HIV drugs — rilpivirine, sold as Edurant by Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen, and ViiV Healthcare’s experimental drug known as cabotegravir.

ViiV Healthcare paid for the research. The drugmakers are seeking approval later this year in the United States and Europe.

One study included 616 people who were taking pills to treat their HIV infection. The other study enrolled 566 people who hadn’t yet started treatment, so they first got pills to get the virus under control.

In each of the studies, half the participants switched to the shots while the rest stayed on pills. After nearly a year, 1 to 2 percent of people in both groups had traces of virus in their blood, whether they got shots or pills. That shows the shots worked as well as the standard pill therapy. A few people withdrew from the studies because of pain after the injections.

The studies were done in Europe and North America and in nations including Argentina, Australia, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Japan and Mexico.

“We don’t have experience rolling out an injection in the real world,” said Warren, the AIDS advocate. He said the next challenges will be how to deliver the shots and whether patients will remember to come back monthly. “These are big questions.”

Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ show is set in the Second Age. Here’s what that means.

TwitterFacebook

Amazon is taking us back to Middle-Earth’s Second Age in its upcoming Lord of the Rings show, giving us a much firmer grasp on what we can expect to see (or rather, what we know we won’t see).

The Twitter account for Amazon’s untitled Lord of the Rings show tweeted out an image of a map of Middle-Earth and the message “Welcome to the Second Age,” seemingly confirming that the show will take place long before the events of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which took place toward the tail end of the Third Age. That means we won’t be seeing young Aragorn, but there’s still a chance that we’ll see Elrond, Galadriel, and possibly some other elves.  Read more…

Zendaya Hosts Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Show Featuring All Black Women

Premiere Of Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Smallfoot' - Arrivals

Source: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty

Zendaya brought pure black girl magic to the runway over the weekend for the reveal of her #TOMMYNOW collection for Tommy Hilfiger in Paris. Her models were exclusively all black, but when it came to age she was all-inclusive, recruiting models from ages 18 to 70.

Among the 59 models that strutted during the show include Grace Jones, Beverly Johnson, Veronica Webb, Pat Cleveland and Winnie Harlow.

The 22-year-old starlet said she wanted to use this platform to pay homage to the women who paved the way for her.

“I want to make a show inspired by the women who made it possible for me to be in the position where I am now,” she told Elle. “Honestly, I just wanted to say “thank you” to them through this show. I said to Tommy, ‘If we do a show, this is what it needs to be about.’ And Tommy said, ‘Great. Go for it.’ And he actually meant it. I mean, look.

The former Disney star said she was shocked when Hilfiger called her and gave her creative control over the show.

“I didn’t really believe it [was him] at first. Tommy Hilfiger on the phone? And he said, ‘Look, if you do a show with me, you can have whatever you want and do whatever you want. Go nuts. If you have a vision, tell me, and we’ll execute it together.’”

The Jeremy Kyle Show guests who are dead ringers for celebrities… sort of

WITH their tombstone teeth and marker-pen eyebrows, you might think the guests of The Jeremy Kyle Show were a world away from the celebrity A-list.

But today The Sun Online can reveal it’s time to think again – because many of Jezza’s finest are dead ringers for the stars.

We reveal the top 25 celebrity lookalikes to grace Jezza’s set

We are running down the Kyle guests who astonished viewers when they appeared on the ITV daytime hit.

From Gemma Collins and Cher Lloyd to Mark Wright and Justin Timberlake, countless doppelgangers have stormed onto Jeremy’s theatre of conflict.

Even EastEnders’ Adam Woodyatt and Star Wars hero Ewan McGregor have their own Kyle lookalikes.

Perhaps it’s time to call on 53-year-old Jezza‘s famous DNA test to see if this lot really are related.

You know nothing, Jeremy Kyle

Sam looked like Game Of Thrones’ Jon Snow, played by Kit Harrington, when he came for a paternity test. So much for no sex in the Night’s Watch.

Stressed-life

Denon resembled an agitated version of Westlife’s Brian McFadden when he popped in for a DNA test in January

Does my face look bovvered? Yes, actually

Unimpressed Gemma was a dead ringer for Catherine Tate’s schoolgirl Lauren Cooper in 2016

A case of the Trotts

Viewers thought this guest looked just like EastEnders’ Heather Trott when she defended her daughter in 2017

Stay Another Day(time telly)

With his permanent headgear and hint of a beard, this bloke looked like East 17 frontman Brian Harvey

You ain’t ever gonna get this… DNA test

When Lucy appeared in 2016, every viewer gasped in unison: ‘It’s Gemma Collins’

Cher and Cher-a-like

This guest appears to have taken style inspiration from X Factor 2010 crooner Cher Lloyd

Lady Gah! Gah!

This glamour girl was instantly compared to Lady Gaga during her turn on the famous Kyle furniture

The One With The Glamorous Guest

Zoe was delighted to be compared to Jennifer Aniston in 2016 – but less glad to learn her husband was cheating on her

Sherlock homies

Benedict Cumberbatch’s master of disguise Sherlock Holmes appeared to be masquerading as a female guest – let’s hope Moriarty doesn’t watch ITV daytime

Celebrity Big Bothered

This unhappy man looked just like Coronation Street and Celeb Big Brother star Ryan Thomas, minus the sunny personality

Bringin’ sexy back

Josh was compared to an oxygen-starved Justin Timberlake, if JT ever went on a show entitled ‘I’ll prove you’re a drug dealer then I’ll raise your baby’

Now that’s Incredible

Self-confessed ‘gangster’ Samantha was a dead ringer for The Incredibles’ costume designer Edna Mode this week

Aiming for Childs

This Kyle guest looked like she was trying to steal Amy Childs’ look – but she doesn’t seem to be quite there with the pouting yet

The Towie twins

Cappuccino-haired Lewis had £160 stolen from him – and if that wasn’t bad enough, he was also compared to Joey Essex

Beale, but not real

Grant came on the show for a paternity test in 2015 – and got branded ‘Ian Beale’ for his troubles

You look Wellard

This tough guy looked like EastEnders star Dean Gaffney, who plays Robbie Jackson. What have you two done with Wellard?

Lady Scary

Michelle Dockery, who plays Downtown Abbey’s Lady Mary Crawley, may not totally love this comparison

Let the Jeremy see the Kyle

This cheeky chappie looks uncannily like a younger version of Take Me Out host Paddy McGuinness

It’s good to be Green

One chap looked a lot like rapper Professor Green – well, minus one or two teeth

Consternation Street

This Jeremy Kyle guest looks concerned – perhaps she’s worried she hasn’t totally nailed her Michelle Keegan look

You look a Lottie like Mossy

This beautiful young guest was a dead ringer for model Lottie Moss

Use the force, Lee

Poor Lee didn’t just find out his girlfriend was cheating – he also got branded a ‘Poundland Ewan McGregor’

Myles a head

This lad looked very much like Kady McDermott’s Towie boyfriend Myles Barnett

That’s not Wright

And finally, here’s a guest looking like Mark Wright – minus the Hollywood smile, of course

Kandi Burruss Shares Fire Photos With Todd Tucker And Her Dancers From Last Night’s Show – Fans Suggest Her To Keep Todd Out Of ‘Risky Situations’ Because Loyalty Is Hard To Find

Kandi Burruss has been preparing for last night’s show for quite a while. Her beloved hubby, Todd Tucker has also been a part of the rehearsal sessions and Kandi shared a bunch of pics and videos to document everything for her fans.

Kandi’s fans and followers have been laughing their hearts out while watching a recent post. She was with her crew, rehearsing and Todd Tucker joined her.

Now, a few hours ago, Kandi finally shared some pics from the much-awaited show, and some fans were surprised to see Todd on stage as well. He did attend the rehearsal, so this was expected.

‘Charlotte was Lit! 🔥🔥🔥Thanks for the love! I’m stopping by The Tip Off Mega Party later. New venue alert for the party!!! Now it will be at Peculiar Rabbit! 1212 Pecan Ave. Charlotte N.C. —- styled by @therealnoigjeremy, mua- @taetv, hair- @sewjodie. 📸: @hauseofglam,’ Kandi captioned a photo in which she was showing off her fantastic look.

She shared a bunch of other pics from the show and she captioned her post with: ‘Tonight’s show was fun! I gotta send love to my whole team that rocked with me tonight! ❤

Someone told Kandi as a joke (more or less): ‘Putting ur man in a risky situation is not safe anymore….there’s no loyalty anymore….keep ur happiness caged away from preyed eyes 😊

The person was probably hinting at the latest massive drama between the triangle Tristan Thompson – Khloe Kardashian – Jordyn Woods.

Another follower posted ‘Lovin the gram keep it up I was busy is fun showin love to 1 half of the crew.’

Someone else praised Kandi and called her a role model for her fans: ‘You are such a beautiful, positive role model for us all. Continued blessings to you and your family. 💜

Kandi has been spending more time with her family these days which made her fans happy.

One of the Over-the-Top Looks From Moschino’s Game Show-Themed Runway Show Was a TV Dinner Cape

The price was right at the Moschino runway show on Thursday where creative director Jeremy Scott riffed on the flashy, campy commercialism of game shows for a fashion show that would tickle Bob Barker’s fancy.

The over-the-top collection featured tongue-in-cheek looks shown to the theme song of The Price is Right, including a dollar bill print suit, bedazzled dresses that paid homage to consumer goods like soap and toothpaste, and in what might be the night’s most memorable ensemble, a structural kimono cape that looked like a TV dinner, complete with an aluminum pan, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and unidentifiable meat. For the finale of the show, models posed with cars, lawnmowers, home gym equipment and other goods that you might find on late-night television commercials as Scott took his final bow.

This isn’t the first time that Scott and Moschino’s cheeky sense of humor has trolled the fashion industry; look no further than their controversial, $ 375 dry cleaning garment bag dresses that caused an uproar on the Internet. One thing’s for certain, however; Scott’s outrageous Moschino looks are absolutely fitting for this year’s camp-themed Met Gala.

See Moschino’s best looks from their runway show below.

Wendy Williams Announces Return Date To Talk Show

Wendy Williams has announced a return to her talk show. The embattled talk show hostess, who was dealing with a series of issues, including a fractured shoulder and complications stemming from the automimmune illness Graves disease, has been absent from her show for more than two months.

During that time, Nick Cannon, our own Sherri Shepherd, actor Jerry O’Connell and personality Bevy Smith have stepped in as guest host or part of a rotating panel. Williams has not been seen much in public since her hiatus and recent reports alleged that she and her husband/manager Kevin Hunter were no longer communicating with show producers.

Apparently, that’s not the case. Debmar-Mercury, the production company behind The Wendy Williams Show issued a statement confirming Williams’ return in two weeks.

“Wendy Williams is an incredible talent with the most unique voice in daytime. We can’t wait to welcome her back to her iconic purple chair on the set of her show. We so appreciate all of the guest hosts and panelists who filled in for Wendy during this time. These people are, and always will be, true family to the show. And we want to thank all of the loyal and supportive fans who have been with us for 10 years now.”

On her part, Williams also issued a statement, thanking both Debmar-Mercury and the show’s team.

What you need to know about Victoria Beckham’s show (and her new YouTube channel)

2019 could be VB’s biggest year yet

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham’s second LFW show took place yesterday, with her whole family in the audience and at which her daughter Harper debuted a brand new bob haircut.

Making her London debut last year after several at New York Fashion Week, VB returned to the city to showcase her AW19 collection at the Tate Britain.

Models’ skin was prepped with massages by renowned facialist Nichola Joss before applying The Cream by Augustinus Bader. The result was a glowing, flawless complexion that, according to Joss, would set them up for a busy day of shows.

Make-up legend Pat McGrath and her team perfected the glow before models hit the catwalk, showcasing a collection of comfortable and chic tailored pieces that perfectly captured how the modern woman wants to look (and dress).

Victoria Beckham show

The show was broadcast live on giant screens in Piccadilly to mark the launch of VB’s new YouTube channel, which will be an insight into all things fashion, beauty, and even the Beckham family will make an appearance.

The channel comes as Victoria’s friend, Derek Blasberg, has recently been appointed YouTube’s fashion and beauty director.

‘When Derek approached me, I thought it would be a great opportunity to educate myself and really understand the platform,’ she told Vogue after the show. ‘The videos are going to be everything from fashion to beauty, and my family will be in there as well.

‘I think you’ll get the opportunity to see the real me: me at work, me with the kids and what it’s like being a working mum.’

2019 is going to be pretty mega for VB, who is also about to launch her own make-up line Victoria Beckham Beauty.

Watch this space for Victoria Beckham’s biggest year yet.

February’s Super Snow Moon will be the most spectacular show of the season

February’s Super Snow Moon will be the most spectacular show of the season

February’s Super Snow Moon will be the most spectacular show of the season

Thankfully, most of us made it through January’s Super Blood Wolf Moon without sprouting fangs or tearing apart our best flannel shirts. February’s full moon will not be as eventful as January’s promised to be, but it will still be quite the spectacle. The February Super Snow Moon will peak at 10:53 a.m. EST on Tuesday, February 19th, and according to Alamanac.com, this upcoming super moon is going to be the best one we’ll see all year.

The moon will be at the closest point to Earth in its orbit (known as “perigee”) on February 19th, which means the Super Snow Moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of 2019. Unless there’s a thick covering of clouds in your area, it will be pretty hard to miss the Super Snow Moon.

This year, January, February, and March all boast full super moons. But February’s takes the cake thanks to its proximity to Earth. Just how big will the Super Snow Moon look? Almanac.com reports that a super moon can appear about 7% greater in diameter than a regular full moon. And super moons can appear 15% brighter than any normal moon.

Like we said, the Super Snow Moon is not going to allow you to miss it. You might as well look up on Monday night—and Tuesday, too.

February’s full moon is called the Snow Moon because of the heavy snowfall that occurs in the Northern (and sometimes Southern) regions of the U.S. during February. But native peoples in various areas in the U.S. call February’s full moon by other names.

Wishram people of the Pacific Northwest call this moon “Shoulder to Shoulder Around the Fire Moon.” The Zuni people in the Southwest call it the “No Snow in the Trails Moon.” And the Cherokee of the Southeast call this moon the “Bone Moon,” because their people consumed bones or made marrow soup during the coldest month of the year when food was short. Other Northeastern tribespeople called February’s full moon the “Hunger Moon” for this same reason.

Viewing a supermoon during dusk or dawn is the best way to get a grasp on how big it truly looks. As it rises and sets on the horizon, it looks absolutely massive compared to the trees and buildings silhouetted against it.

Although the Super Snow Moon peaks in the daylight hours of Tuesday, February 19th, we’ll still be able to see a great show the night before, on Monday, February 18th. Make a point to head outside and look upward come nightfall to see the greatest super moon of 2019. And if you’re a real trooper, wake up at dawn on Tuesday to see an even more impressive sight as the moon begins to set in the west.

Even two weeks after the super moon peaks, we’ll still be tuned into a great cosmic show. In the weeks following February’s full moon, those of us with access to a completely dark sky (that is, a sky not polluted with city light) will be able to see a strange triangle of light in the western sky above where the sun just set.

This is “false dusk” or “zodiacal light,” a phenomenon during which sunlight reflects off 4.5 billion-year-old space dust.

The Super Snow Moon a big deal, people. You’re not going to want to miss it.

Dave Chappelle Personally Delivers Show Tickets To Couple Hit With Scam

Jon Stewart & Dave Chappelle in Dublin

Source: WENN.com / WENN

Dave Chappelle and his stand-up appearances are without a doubt a hot ticket no matter where he’s performing, and a Charlotte couple tried to score big for Chappelle’s Valentine’s Day show. After getting scammed out of $ 500 on Craigslist, Chappelle personally delivered the tickets to the victims and even kicked it with them a bit.

Local outlet WBTV reports:

On Thursday night, Dave Chappelle hand-delivered tickets to his Valentine’s Day comedy show to a Charlotte couple who were scammed out of hundreds of dollars trying to purchase the tickets on Craigslist.

Not only did Chappelle hand-deliver the tickets, he sat down to chat with the couple and took time to take pictures with several people in the hotel restaurant.

On Wednesday, WBTV reported that a south Charlotte wife and mother claimed she paid a seller on Craigslist hundreds of dollars for tickets to see comedian Dave Chappelle at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, but never received the tickets.

Deidra Dickens thought she scored the deal of a lifetime on Craiglist to surprise her husband, Eddie, who is a huge fan of the comedian. However, the whole thing was a sham but Chappelle managed to save the day.

In video captured by the news outlet, Chappelle had dinner with the couple and posed for flicks for fans in a big-time show of class and grace. Way to go, Dave Chappelle.

Happy Valentine’s Day indeed.
