Why Abortion Defenders Keep Showing Up at Clinics That Want Them to Stay Away

Erin Sheridan

On a recent Wednesday, protesters gathered outside the Planned Parenthood in Madison, Wisconsin, for more than an hour; chanting, giving speeches, and occasionally raising their fists in the air. In their hands, they held a hot-pink and white banner reading, “We ❤️Abortion.”

They were members of Madison Abortion Defense, a group whose mission includes countering anti-abortion demonstrators outside clinics. The group is one of at least five similar organizations that have united to form the Movement for Abortion Defense coalition, dedicated to “opposing right-wing, anti-choice protests in the streets” and “reclaiming space and confronting antis at our clinics.”

There’s only one problem: Many of the clinics don’t want their help.

The Importance of Meditation: How to Stay Calm at Work

Having one of those days when you’re buried in paperwork while your boss piles on a list of unrealistic demands and a difficult co-worker manages to get on your very last nerve? If so, then it may be time for you to step away from your desk and take some time to meditate.

We’ve all had tough days like this while working on the clock. However, we don’t always deal with the stress of challenging situations and people at work in a healthy way. That’s why Black Enterprise invited entrepreneur, wellness expert, and author Quentin Vennie to stop by our office in New York City to share advice on how and why we must meditate.

Stay Calm at Work

Vennie explained why it’s imperative for everyone, especially working professionals, to give themselves a mental break and practice mindfulness.

“So often throughout the day we’re faced with so much adversity, so many things, so much stress, [and] we’re trying to multitask,” he said. “Sometimes I think it’s important to just take yourself outside of that. Focus your attention on one thing and move forward from that point.”

In a nutshell, here is why Vennie says mindfulness is crucial for success:

  • We are what we think
  • You can’t be faithful and fearful at the same time
  • Focus on what you want to accomplish
  • Gratitude is the best mechanism to defeat depression

Vennie also talked about using meditation as a tool to overcome affliction. Watch the full interview below.

Overcoming It All

Vennie, who says meditation has personally helped him overcome drug addiction and severe depression, was also recognized as a 2017 BE Modern Man of Distinction, where he shared his story. Here’s an excerpt:

I was born and raised in a single-parent household on the west side of Baltimore. My father was a heroin addict, and by the time I was 12 I had been shot at and spent more time visiting prisons than most of the people I was close to. Despite spending a lot of time in my old neighborhood in West Baltimore, I went to predominantly white schools in the suburbs of Baltimore County. I experienced racism, discrimination, prejudice, you name it. I was diagnosed with acute anxiety and mild depression when I was 14, and then diagnosed with severe generalized anxiety and panic disorder, and mild to severe major depressive disorder, at 26. I endured a two-year addiction to my anxiety medication, survived an accidental overdose and two failed suicide attempts, but was fortunate to discover a wellness system that saved my life (yoga, meditation, and fruit/vegetable juicing). Not only did it help me get off all medications, but it also made my anxiety and depression easier to manage.

I started telling my story of my battles with anxiety, depression, and addiction in 2012 when I first started my journey into sobriety, and on May 30th of this year, my first book, Strong in the Broken Places: A Memoir of Addiction and Redemption Through Wellness was published in the U.S. and Canada, and published in Australia and the U.K. on July 1st. I was able to successfully turn my trial into a triumph that has positively impacted people worldwide.

Now, it’s time for you to meditate with us! Follow along with this 14-minute meditation session guided by Quentin below.

Michael Moore Calls on All Federal Workers to Stay Home

Scott Kowalchyk

The last time he was on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show, Michael Moore said that that only way to stop President Donald Trump would be to “put our bodies on the line.” On Thursday night, he had issued a new challenge, this one to the 800,000 federal workers who are either furloughed or working without pay during the government shutdown.

“Any sane person—even if they’re for the wall—knows this is crazy that we’re in month two of this,” the director of Fahrenheit 11/9 said. “Nobody should be working without pay.”

Asked by Colbert how this whole thing will end, Moore said there’s an “easy way” to end it. “Federal workers, don’t go to work without pay,” he said. “And we, the people, we shouldn’t be supporting anything that requires someone who’s not paid working for us.” He went on to urge all Americans to stop taking flights and delay filing their tax paperwork to the IRS until the government reopens.

Where should you stay: a hotel or apartment?

A number of factors can influence a traveler’s decision in choosing between staying in a hotel or an apartment. Location, your budget, the duration of your stay, and how many people are being accommodated are some of the factors that can influence a traveler’s decision. Below are some pros and cons of each, in order to help you decide which option is best for you.

Benefits of hotels – no security deposit

Most apartments require a security deposit when checking in. Hotels usually don’t. Staying in a hotel can come in handy for impromptu travel, while apartments usually require some sort of advanced planning.

Benefits of hotels – check-in flexibility

A traveler can check into a hotel anytime because the front desk always has someone working. Apartments require you to organize your check-in time in advance since you will need someone to be available to provide you with the apartment keys.

Benefits of hotels – Comfort

Hotel beds usually are very comfortable and rooms are equipped with TVs so you can relax and unwind with plenty of entertainment. When it comes to the amount of space, however, hotel rooms are generally quite small.

Benefits of hotels – Meals

Hotel restaurant service can be quite comfortable and their meals are usually excellent. Breakfast is often included in the standard room price (and who doesn’t love a buffet breakfast?). However, you’ll have to eat out every meal because you won’t have a way to prepare your own food in a hotel. For shorter stays, hotels are a good choice. They offer flexibility and give you more time to deal with your business, appointments, or work without the hustle of taking much care of the room.

Benefits of apartments – meals

Apartments usually have fully equipped kitchens so you can always prepare and enjoy your home cooked food, whether with your friends or by yourself. This saves money on takeaway and restaurants. Be ready to wash the dishes and clean up after yourself, since some apartments may charge you an extra fee for any unwashed dishes left when your stay is over.

Benefits of apartments – privacy

Although some hotel rooms can accommodate up to four people, there is no privacy. Apartments offer various options and bedrooms. They often have separate rooms which can be quite convenient for purposes like business meetings while others are resting in their individual rooms.

Benefits of apartments – group activities

Apartments are the often the best option if you are traveling with your family or friends. There is plenty of communal space and it can be shared with everyone, offering more space and comfort. You will be able to have your own room, giving you more own privacy.

Benefits of apartments – offers additional amenities and services

Apartments often have wifi, washing machines, balconies, kitchen cutlery, utensils and glassware, and refrigerators. Communal facilities are also available in some apartments. Apartments are perfect for travelers who intend on staying for longer periods of time. You won’t have that cabin fever that sometimes happens when you are staying in a small hotel room because they tend to be more spacious.

How celebrities stay warm during New Year’s Eve in Times Square

What’s the secret to spending New Year’s Eve outside in the middle of Times Square? Layers. Lots of layers. Why you should stay in a youth hostel at least once in your life

Some people refuse to stay in a youth hostel as they fear sharing their space with a complete stranger, or a group of strangers. Sure it means you have to get a little closer to people you know nothing about, but that’s actually part of its charm, plus they are a bargain too! Here’s why you should stay in a youth hostel at least once in your life.

Out of your comfort zone

Travel is all about creating experiences, but if you stay within your comfort zone, those memories might pass you by. Spending a few nights in a youth hostel will put you in touch with like-minded people all trying to have a great time. It is a collection of potential new friends.

There is always a place to hang out and have a few drinks before you and your new friends go exploring the city you’re staying in. Making friends at a youth hostel is pretty much inevitable if you’re open to the idea, and it can only make your experience better.

They cost less

There is one thing many people always argue in favor of hotels over hostels, they give you privacy. That privacy comes at a price, and often it makes travel far too expensive. For those who want to see the world but don’t have the budget to spend every night in a hotel, there is the humble youth hostel. They can cost as little as $ 10 per night and offer you a safe place to stay in a foreign land.

Hostels know what you want

The people who run youth hostels know exactly what you’ve come for. A good time! You will find that they try to help people get out and explore their wonderful cities, either during the day or to get a taste of the nightlife. The staff will suggest tours, and at night many of the team will gather a group of fellow hostel residents to go out and enjoy themselves.

Local knowledge

If you want to find the latest hotspot in the city, then the chances are the people working in the youth hostel are going to know where that is. Their jobs are to look after young travelers, so they have to know what they are attracted to. Tap into the staff’s knowledge to get to know some of the world’s best cities, plus they often have exclusive discounts to make things cheaper.

Resources

If you are traveling on a budget, then you might not have the cash to go out and eat dinner every night. One thing youth hostels offer you above hotels is the use of a guest kitchen. You can make your own meals in the evenings before hitting the town, saving vital resources for the local clubs and bars.

Youth hostels get a bad rap from people, but they offer so much. They won’t break the bank, and they pretty much guarantee you’re going to have a good time by creating a party atmosphere.

‘Teach Flu A Lesson’ Strives to Help Kids Stay Healthy This Season

No one wants to be sick, especially during the holidays, which is why it is especially important school-aged children get the annual flu vaccine this fall.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu is the leading cause of illness, and last year’s flu season was the deadliest in more than a decade. Young children are especially at risk. The flu spreads quickly in tight quarters such as elementary school classrooms, and children’s developing immune systems may be more susceptible to colds and flu. Children who live in low-income communities may be at even greater risk because their access to health care and preventive vaccines is often limited.

Thanks to the voluntary Teach Flu a Lesson program, thousands of underserved students throughout Southern California can receive increased protection against the influenza virus this season at no charge. The innovative partnership among Kaiser Permanente, the California Department of Public Health, 10 school districts, and 11 nursing schools is making more than 8,000 flu vaccines available at school-based vaccination clinics.

By providing the vaccine to communities with below-average vaccination rates, Teach Flu a Lesson helps ensure the most vulnerable communities can reduce their risk for infection and enjoy better health this winter.

“This program is so important — it is not only about protecting the individual child, but also protecting the school from a larger outbreak, and protecting the student’s family, including younger siblings,” said Margaret Khoury, MD, pediatric infectious disease specialist and regional lead of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Flu Vaccination Program.

“Reaching out to the community and making protection available to children every flu season is the way to go,” Dr Khoury said. “Removing obstacles to getting the flu shot is the key to our success and what makes this program a model.”

Bradley Jacoby, DO and Riverside Community College nursing students.

Bradley Jacoby, DO, Southern California Permanente Medical Group (bear costume), and Riverside Community College nursing students partner for the Teach Flu a Lesson program.

This year, Teach Flu a Lesson is expected to be especially successful because of the return of FluMist, the nasal spray vaccine option. Working with the California Department of Public Health, Kaiser Permanente is making both FluMist and the standard flu shot available to young students with their parent’s or guardian’s permission. Kaiser Permanente also helped to secure assistance from local nursing schools, whose nursing students are administering the vaccines.

“The FluMist is great,” said Kevin Moore, practice specialist at Kaiser Permanente, who helps lead the Teach Flu a Lesson program with Lisa Buffong, associate medical group administrator. “It is quick to administer and less traumatic for students compared to a shot, and we know it is just as effective.”

This year, 112 Southern California schools are hosting the vaccination clinics. Participating school districts include:

  • Antelope Valley: Lancaster
  • Los Angeles County: Baldwin Park and El Rancho
  • Orange County: Anaheim, Buena Park, Santa Ana, and Savana
  • Riverside County: Riverside
  • San Bernardino County: Yucaipa
  • South Bay: Torrance

“Every year, many students miss important instructional time in the classroom because they are home sick with the flu,” said Christopher Downing, superintendent, Anaheim Elementary School District. “The value of the Teach Flu a Lesson is that it helps lower this public health barrier and ensures access to a flu shot for all of our students.”

Now in its sixth year, Teach Flu a Lesson began at schools in early October and will continue through mid-December.

“As we head into the holiday season, the key to staying healthy for children is getting the vaccine, combined with handwashing, and of course healthy eating and sleep,” said Dr. Khoury. “That’s the recipe for wellness.”
