Steve Aoki Collaborates With Travel Accessories Brand Fūl

For the guy on the go, travel and gear accessories brand Fūl has unveiled a range of accessories — a collaboration with Grammy-nominated DJ and producer Steve Aoki called the “Fūl-Aoki” collection.
Fūl, originally founded by Justin Timberlake in 2004 and now owned by Concept One Accessories, has carved out a space in the travel category with backpacks, belt bags and travel gear inspired by the nomadic life of a musician but curated for anyone with an active lifestyle.
“Steve and I had been talking about doing something together for Fūl over the past couple of years,” said Sam Hafif, chief executive officer of the accessories brand. “Travel is such a big part of his life. No one I know travels as extensively as he does, so his vision for the product and how it should function comes from a unique personal experience.”

The line takes a cue from the streetwear scene and Aoki’s personal style, and splits into two distinct directions. The first is the “street” collection which is comprised of five backpacks and one waist pack, and features  caribiners for headphones, multiple pockets for cables, thick padded laptop sleeves, and ergonomic shoulder straps. “For the

Rep. Steve King Advocates White Nationalism and Needs a Black History Lesson

Congressman Steve King’s racist, white nationalist philosophy and false assertion that other ethnic groups or as he refers to it, “subgroups,”  have not contributed more to civilization is ridiculous.

Congressman King, did you know:

  • It was a black man by the name of Benjamin Banneker who mapped out the streets of our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. actually where your office is located.
  • Crispus Attucks, an African American man was the first man killed in the Boston Massacre, becoming the first casualty of the American Revolution.
  • Charles Richard Drew was an African American physician who developed the blood banks that saved many lives during World War II and even today. People of all races who get blood transfusions every day can thank a black man named Dr. Charles Drew.
  • A black man named Lewis Latimer invented the filament to the light bulb which gave the world long-lasting electric lighting methods that made it possible for the lights in your office to stay on for more than the 15 minutes that Thomas Edison reached.

By the way Congressman Steve King, we are not a “subgroup.” There is only one race, and that is the human race. Therefore, all racism is a total disgrace. Let’s not forget that Jesus Christ was a dark skin Jew, who was oppressed and crucified by the Roman government.

‘Daily Show’s’ Trevor Noah Offers Definitive Proof That Steve King Is a ‘Racist’

Comedy Central

This Tuesday, as even Republicans in Congress were denouncing their colleague Steve King’s comments about white supremacy, an NBC News memo leaked instructing reporters to “avoid characterizing [King’s] remarks as racist.” The media organization eventually had to backtrack and admit, “It is fair to characterize King’s comments as ‘racist,’ and point out that he has a history of racist comments.”

“This is a big deal,” The Daily Show host Trevor Noah said Tuesday night. “The Republican Party has punished one of its own for making racist comments.” And while King’s declaration that there’s nothing “offensive” about being a white supremacist “feels like a pretty racist thing to say,” Noah noted that the congressman is fighting back, claiming that his words were somehow taken out of context.

“I want to make one thing abundantly clear,” King said on the floor of the House this week. “I reject those labels and the evil ideology that they define.”

‘Daily Show’s’ Trevor Noah Takes ‘Racist’ Steve King to Task

The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah spent less than a minute taking on Rep. Steve King (R-IA) Thursday night. But that was more time than each of the big three network late-night hosts spent on America’s foremost white nationalist member of Congress.

After lightly mocking Beto O’Rourke for live-streaming his dental appointment on Instagram, Noah moved on to someone who “did something even less cool than visit a dentist.”

In the host’s words, King “has often faced accusations of racism,” adding, “Now, that’s mostly because of all the racist stuff he says. But today he defended himself by asking, ‘What’s wrong with racism anyway?’”

The Dark Side of Steve Jobs, As Seen By His Daughter

This article first appeared in Data Sheet, Fortune’s daily newsletter on the top tech news. To get it delivered daily to your in-box, sign up here.

In the final pages of her heartbreaking memoir about her childhood, Small Fry, Lisa Brennan-Jobs addresses head on one of the central unanswered questions about her accomplished, famous and appallingly cruel father, Steve Jobs. “When people speak and write about my father’s meanness, they sometimes assume that meanness is linked to genius,” she writes. It’s a variation of the “asshole” hypothesis so many in Silicon Valley posit all the time: Is it necessary to be an asshole, like Steve Jobs was, to achieve greatness?

Brennan-Jobs, who devotes perhaps one page out of nearly 400 to her father’s business affairs, has come to her own conclusion. “Maybe the meanness protected the part that created–so that acting mean to approximate genius is as foolish as trying to be successful by copying his lisp or his walk” or other Jobsian mannerisms.

This is a haunting book. Apologists for Steve Jobs tend to talk about his charisma, his great charm, his uncanny ability to be right. They tend to dismiss or change the subject from his dark side. His eldest child, whose paternity he denied before being compelled in court to accept, sees the good in him, too. But her patient, beautifully written account of how he treated her from a young age almost to the day he died is blot on his reputation. No parent or sibling or child can read this book and not come away empathizing with its author and reviling the character around whom her story revolves.

If your goal in reading books is to be a better manager or spot future trends or to understand Apple’s secrets, this is the wrong book for you. If, on the other hand, you want to gain insight into the man whose company revolutionized industries even as he played the ogre to a defenseless child, I highly recommend it.

Speaking of Apple, The Wall Street Journal had a good piece of insight over the weekend, explaining how Apple’s

aapl

geographic expansion last week neatly informs its ongoing strategy of offering services, higher-priced phones, and original content. The paper wrote: “Culver City gives Apple a Hollywood home base as it pushes into video programming. Seattle is a machine-learning hub where it can develop algorithms that personalize streaming-music playlists and improve Siri. San Diego and Austin offer semiconductor engineers who can advance the customized-chip efforts that help Apple wring more money out of its iPhones, iPads, and Macs.”

***

I also recommend The Journal‘s tour de force explanation of GE’s demise under Jeff Immelt. The article nicely builds out the angle Fortune‘s Geoff Colvin explored recently in his piece about the travails of activist investor Nelson Peltz in owning GE’s stock. The reading public will get even more on this subject. Financial journalist, and sometimes Fortune contributor, William Cohan, recently signed a deal to write a book on the rise and fall of GE

‘SNL’ Recap: Steve Carell and ‘The Office’ Cast Hash Out a Reboot

SNL 44x06 Recap
Steve Carell during ‘Saturday Night Live’ Promos on November 13, 2018. Rosalind O'Connor/NBC

Saturday Night Live host Steve Carell was joined by some familiar faces from The Office for a reunion and some reboot discussion during the Saturday, November 17, episode, which also featured musical guest Ella Mai.

Reboot, Please!

Right out of the gate, an audience member asked Carell during his monologue if he would ever reboot The Office. He quickly shot down the idea, but then his former castmates Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms and Ellie Kemper showed up to encourage him. Even the actor’s wife, Nancy Carell, who played Michael’s girlfriend Carol on the sitcom, and his kids, Elisabeth and John, stopped by to tell him to do it. Carell finally brought his costars onstage to say, “I am proud to announce officially that … we have a great show tonight,” as the Office theme song played.

RBG

Pete Davidson and Chris Redd rapped about their love for Ruth Bader Ginsburg after the Supreme Court Justice broke three ribs. The pair repeated, “Live Ginsburg, ride for Ginsburg,” while Kate McKinnon break-danced as her beloved saucier version of the lawmaker.

Dad, Is That You?!

Carell appeared to a high school dropout as a “hunky angel” who sang his version of Grease‘s “Beauty School Dropout.” The catch? One of the girls at the sleepover was his daughter, played by Aidy Bryant. The young girl chided her father for leaving the family to give advice to teenage girls. Carell’s wacky commitment to the deadbeat dad and Bryant’s delivery of various scolds made for a surprisingly laughable sketch.

Big Baller

Kenan Thompson’s LaVar Ball brought his usual level of excitement to a “Weekend Update” segment. The father of Los Angeles Laker Lonzo Ball joked about everything from LeBron James having a restraining order against him to his other two sons, LiAngelo and LaMelo, playing basketball in his Lithuanian league.

Space Slipup

Frozen monkeys, frozen people, cats without faces … it all sounds terrifying. But when it’s actually stuffed animals, McKinnon beating her head against a glass window repeatedly without breaking and Carell’s NASA astronaut spiraling, it’s pretty random and hilarious.

Saturday Night Live airs on NBC Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET.

5 Questions with Steve Sidney

Stephen Sidney, MD, MPH, is the principal investigator of the CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) study in Oakland, California, a pioneering national study of heart health that began enrolling young, black and white men and women in the mid-1980s. A senior research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research, Sidney presented a new report on October 24 at the annual meeting of the National Forum on Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention about heart health among middle-aged people in the United States.

What was your path to becoming a heart researcher?

When I was a medical intern, I saw a lot of patients who had developed heart disease and related disorders. Many of them had not taken very good care of themselves and were unhealthy. I found this discouraging and realized that I was much more interested in preventing disease than in treating it. I interrupted my formal medical training and spent two years as a fellow at the Stanford Heart Disease Prevention Program, and became excited about research on preventing heart disease and its consequences. I realized that a career as a cardiovascular epidemiologist would be a great combination of my interest in heart disease prevention and my background in mathematics and medicine.

In 2017, Steve Sidney helped to organized World Heart Day events with Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.

In 2017, Sidney helped organize World Heart Day events with Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.

Your research has identified a big problem with heart health among middle-aged people.

Our research shows that while the death rate from heart disease has declined substantially over the past two decades in the United States, that decline is much slower among people between 45 and 65 years old. In fact, the death rate from cardiovascular disease actually increased 2 percent in this age group between 2011 and 2016.

What can be done to prevent heart disease in this age group?

At Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, we have an integrated program combining medication and lifestyle changes for helping our members manage their high blood pressure and to prevent complications from existing heart disease. Our research shows that nearly 90 percent of Kaiser Permanente members with high blood pressure now have it under control. As a result, between 2000 and 2015 the death rates from heart disease and stroke in this age group declined twice as fast among our members than in the rest of the country.

If other health care systems and providers had adopted Kaiser Permanente’s approach and achieved the same rate of decline, I estimated in this latest National Forum report that 40,000 heart disease and stroke deaths in this age group would have been prevented in 2015 alone.

How can other health care systems adopt Kaiser Permanente’s approach?

Kaiser Permanente researchers have published papers about our heart health programs so that community clinics and other health care systems can adopt similar strategies. Our three main recommendations are to identify and control heart risk factors early, use treatment algorithms to make decisions about which medications and therapies are most effective and encourage doctors to focus on promoting healthy behaviors such as diet and exercise.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I’m 69 and have been a runner for most of my life. Though age has slowed me down considerably, I still love to run about 40 to 45 minutes a day. I like to do this in the early morning and find it helps center me for the rest of the day. I have been slowly learning to play the mandolin, and I try to practice 4 to 5 days a week. My wife and I, and sometimes other family members, spend long weekends at Sea Ranch in Northern California about every other week, where we love to hike every day along the bluff trail above the ocean, watch a movie almost every evening and gaze at the stars at night.
