‘Widows’: Viola Davis Shines in Steve McQueen’s Riveting Crime Caper

20th Century Fox

TORONTO, Canada — “No one thinks we have the balls to pull this off,” exclaims Veronica (Viola Davis) as she and her cohorts—the dream supporting cast of Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, and Cynthia Erivo—prepare to pull off a risky heist in Widows, Steve McQueen’s first feature since Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave. The operation masterminded by Veronica is no ordinary caper. Widowed after her husband Harry (Liam Neeson) and his partners are presumed dead in a robbery gone awry, Veronica recruits an all-female crew that includes the other women victimized by their spouses’ foolhardiness. Alice (Debicki), still smarting from her late husband’s abusiveness, and Linda (Rodriguez), whose con-artist hubby frittered away the earnings of his clothing store, join forces with Erivo’s feisty hairdresser turned getaway driver.

Although the script, a collaboration between McQueen and crime novelist Gillian Flynn (inspired by a celebrated British miniseries) occasionally bites off more than it can chew, the film, as might be expected from a director known for tackling somber topics such as sex addiction (Shame), Irish radical Bobby Sands’s hunger strike (Hunger) and, of course, slavery, is infinitely more ambitious than the usual genre exercise.

Unlike the Oceans series, Widows is far from a light-hearted romp. Set in the heart of Chicago, the plight of Veronica and her novice gang becomes inextricable from the corrupt machinations of local politicians. It turns out that the money that Harry and his friends stole belonged to Jamal Manning (Brian Tyree Henry), an up-and-coming African-American politician who is running for alderman in the 18th Ward and seeks to defeat Jack Mulligan (Colin Farrell), the scion of a powerful but sleazy family dominated by his father Tom (Robert Duvall). The cynical, but clear-eyed, implication is that opponents of entrenched power are often as corrupt and manipulative as the power brokers they’re attempting to replace. And, as in old-time gangster films, it’s frequently difficult to differentiate the criminals from the lawmakers. Jamal, the respectable politician, is dependent on his trigger-happy brother, played with gleeful impetuousness by Daniel Kaluuya of Get Out and Black Panther fame.

Former Apple software engineer describes demoing for Steve Jobs, and it doesn’t sound fun

Creative Selection book

There’s been no shortage of insider stories about how demanding a boss Steve Jobs could be and how exacting a quality standard he expected everyone at Apple to adhere to during his tenure. Still, it’s always interesting to hear from insiders who have juicy, detail-rich anecdotes to share from the time when Apple’s mercurial co-founder was still in the corner office, still making demands of underlings, still training his famed reality distortion field on anyone and anything that got in the way of Apple on its march to juggernaut status.

Meet Ken Kocienda, a former Apple software engineer who developed the autocorrect feature iPhone users are so reliant on (gee, thanks Ken) as well as the on-screen keyboard in the first iPhone. He’s out with a new book today, Creative Selection, that’s meant to give an insider’s perspective on what Apple’s design process was like under Steve.

Big Brother’s Steve Calls Out JC for Making Fun of Him: ‘This Is Just Silly’

Steve Arienta Responds JC Monduix Comments Appearance Big Brother
Steve Arienta and JC Monduix. Sonja Flemming/CBS (2)

Big Brother’s Steve Arienta may have been eliminated during the first week of the reality show this season, but he isn’t going to stand by and let houseguest JC Mounduix get the last laugh at his expense.

After a clip from the online live feed surfaced on Saturday, September 1, showing Mounduix poking fun at Arienta’s “flat nose” during a game of “would you rather,” the former castmate responded.

“To everyone out there that was born unique, do not fret what other’s ever say about you,” Arienta tweeted alongside the video. “Yes, I have a flat nose, and a flat profile. I have always had it. Born with it. Proud of it. That has never defined me as a person. This is just silly. #BB20”

In the clip, Mounduix can be seen asking other members of the house if they’d rather have Arienta’s nose that he’s “pretty sure has some respiration problems,” or Haleigh Broucher’s “mole.”

This isn’t the first time Mounduix has come under fire for things he’s said and done during his stint on the CBS reality series’ 20th season. Most recently, the 28-year-old Miami native was accused of sexual misconduct toward Tyler Crispen and Broucher, 21, when he was spotted caressing Crispen’s arm.

The show’s executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan released a statement to Us Weekly on August 31, regarding the alleged incident.

“The expression of viewer concerns regarding JC Mounduix’s behavior was reviewed immediately. All video was examined in its entirety,” the statement read. “We spoke with all three of the houseguests separately in detail about the incidents. Tyler and Haleigh explained to producers that they in no way felt threatened, unsafe or sexually harassed.”

Groden and Meehan continued: “If there was any indication from our houseguests of sexual misconduct, we and CBS would have taken immediate action. The safety and security of our houseguests is and will continue to be our top priority.”

Prior to the misconduct accusations, Mounduix turned heads with his inappropriate behavior, including opening the bathroom door while Broucher was using it. In July, viewers of the popular show called him out for placing an ice cream scooper near one of his female castmate’s private parts.

However, it hasn’t just been his actions that have made headlines. Mounduix was also openly called out by houseguests for misusing #MeToo, a sexual harassment awareness term, as well as using the N-word during a live feed in July.

CBS released a statement to Us in July warning members of the show of consequences for actions like this in the future.

“Big Brother is a reality show about watching a group of people who have no privacy 24/7 — and capturing every unfiltered moment and conversation in their lives. At times, the houseguests reveal prejudices and exhibit behavior that we do not condone,” the statement read. “The producers have addressed two such incidents that were seen recently on the 24/7 online feed. In both cases, those involved have been warned about their inappropriate behavior and offensive comments, as well as future consequences. These events will not be part of any future Big Brother broadcast on CBS.”

Big Brother airs on CBS Sundays at 8 p.m. ET, and Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.

Why is Martin Hughes-Games not on Springwatch 2018 and who are the special guests? From Steve Backshall to Lucy Cooke

Springwatch is back on BBC2 but without one of its familiar faces.

Martin Hugh-Games will not be returning as a presenter after 12 years of service – here’s what we know about it so far and who may be guest presenting in his place.

After 12 years the veteran presenter is leaving the show
Handout

Why is Martin Hugh-Games not returning to Springwatch?

In 2016 he actually announced that he was being axed by the BBC in order for diversity targets to be met.

However after a flurry of support from viewers, his role was changed rather than terminated.

Show bosses gave him less time in the studio and more in the field.

But in February he tweeted again confirming he was leaving the show for definite.

He said in a subsequent Radio Times interview: “I had reasons for deciding to leave Springwatch, but these are private and I have no wish to upset anyone by going on about them. I’m going to miss Chris and Michaela terribly. Springwatch, as a totally non-scripted, live show is exceptionally difficult to present but Chris and Michaela make it look almost effortless and great fun – it’s an amazing skill.”

Who is guest presenting?

Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan Gillian Burke are the three main presenters but there is a rotating cast of guest presenters too.

Gabby Barrett Sang ‘Don’t Stop Believin” in Front of Journey’s Steve Perry — and He Loved It

Gabby Barrett sang Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” in front of millions — but there was one unexpected (and legendary!) guest in the crowd that took her breath away.

During Sunday’s episode of American Idol, the Pittsburgh native took on the fan-favorite tune for her last performance of the night. Little did she know, she was singing in front of the iconic rock band’s former lead singer, Steve Perry.

“That was insane,” Barrett, 18, told PEOPLE after the show. “I’m actually surprised I knew who it was at first because he’s older now, but I looked over and I knew his face. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I had no idea he was coming. That was such an honor.”

She added, “He said that my version was the best version that he ever heard. That’s so crazy. My dad would always play Journey in the car and I remember watching him perform on the television. I remember him wearing a yellow t-shirt and some tight skinny jeans and just seeing him here and being able to sing his song in front of him was such an honor. Holy monkeys!”

After Barrett completed her song for the evening, she noticed Perry standing near her parents and quickly said, “Oh my gosh, I know who that is!”

Instead of the judges critiquing her performance, Katy Perry suggested that Journey star do the honors.

“She was amazing, that’s my critique,” he said.

Ryan Seacrest escorted a star-struck Barrett to Perry and the two embraced in a sweet hug.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman Acknowledges Users Shared Russia Propaganda

Russian trolls used Reddit to spread propaganda in prelude to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Reddit said on Monday.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said in a post on Reddit that the company removed a “few hundred accounts” from its social media service that it believed were linked to Russian-based entities that had spread misleading information.

Huffman did not identify the groups, but the Daily Beast reported last week that members of the Russia-based Internet Research Agency had spread misinformation on Reddit’s various message boards as well as on Tumblr blogging service. The IRA was one of three Russian groups identified in a recent Justice Department indictment alleging that Russian individuals had spread fake news and propaganda through popular social networking and messaging services like Facebook

fb

and Twitter

twtr

in an effort to exacerbate existing divisions in the U.S..

“As for direct propaganda, that is, content from accounts we suspect are of Russian origin or content linking directly to known propaganda domains, we are doing our best to identify and remove it,” Huffman wrote. “The vast majority of suspicious accounts we have found in the past months were banned back in 2015-2016 through our enhanced efforts to prevent abuse of the site generally.”

Huffman said that there’s not much evidence that Russian trolls bought online ads on Reddit to disseminate propaganda, as they are alleged to have done on Facebook and Google.

“We don’t see a lot of ads from Russia, either before or after the 2016 election, and what we do see are mostly ads promoting spam and ICOs,” Huffman said.

Huffman also said that thousands of U.S.-based Reddit users may have unwittingly promoted Russian propaganda on the service. He cited the fact that these Reddit users endorsed the postings of @TEN_GOP Twitter account, which they thought were linked to a real Republican group but was actually a “Russian agent.”

Get Data Sheet, Fortune’s technology newsletter.

“I wish there was a solution as simple as banning all propaganda, but it’s not that easy. Between truth and fiction are a thousand shades of grey,” Huffman wrote. “It’s up to all of us–Redditors, citizens, journalists–to work through these issues.”

The Senate Intelligence Committee now wants more information from Reddit about the possibility that Russia may have exploited the service, the Washington Post reported Monday. The committee also plans to hold a briefing with Tumblr, the newspaper said citing an unnamed source.

Billionaire Steve Wynn Resigns as RNC Finance Chair Amid Sexual Harassment Claims

(WASHINGTON) — Billionaire Steve Wynn has stepped down as Republican National Committee finance chair, the RNC’s chairwoman said, a day after reports that the casino magnate had engaged in multiple instances of sexual harassment.

The decision may be a blow to the Republican Party’s fundraising as it gears up for midterm elections in November with an unpopular president as its standard-bearer.

“Today I accepted Steve Wynn’s resignation as Republican National Committee finance chair,” the RNC’s Ronna Romney McDaniel said in a statement. Wynn’s departure was first reported by Politico.

Wynn, the founder of Wynn Resorts Ltd., paid $ 7.5 million to settle claims brought by a former manicurist at his Las Vegas resort who said he pressured her to have sex with him, the Wall Street Journal said Friday. The report contained numerous other allegations of harassment and coercion by other women.

Wynn, who turns 76 on Saturday, denied the allegations. “The idea that I ever assaulted any woman is preposterous,” he said in a statement.

The board of directors of Wynn Resorts met and formed a special committee comprised of independent directors to investigate the allegations, according to a statement issued by the board.

‘Deeply Committed’

“The board is deeply committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all of the company’s employees and to operating with the highest ethical standards,” it said in the statement.

Committee members contacted by Bloomberg said they first learned of the allegations from news reports. One, who asked not to be identified because he wasn’t authorized to speak for the party, said that in his view the Republican Party couldn’t keep Wynn in such a high-profile position given the nature of the accusations.

Under Wynn, the RNC set a fundraising record in 2017 for a non-election year. It ended November with $ 33.5 million more in the bank than its Democratic counterpart, thanks in part to the big donors Wynn can attract.

“Most of the credit for the cash on hand advantage goes to chairwoman McDaniel and her team. But Wynn was certainly a part of the success. He will be hard to replace, especially mid-cycle,” said Dan Eberhart, chief executive officer of oilfield services firm Canary LLC and a Republican fundraiser. “It’s another worry the Republicans don’t need.”

Reaching Women

The allegations come at a delicate time for the party, which needs to maintain its financial edge as it faces a wave of retiring House incumbents and an expensive Senate race in Florida.

The party is also struggling to improve its standing with women after its reputation was bruised last year in Alabama. Roy Moore, the party’s candidate for what had been one of its safest Senate seats, lost after allegations arose that he had sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl when he was in his mid-30s and had pursued other teenagers.

Republicans also have to contend with the fact that President Donald Trump, who personally asked Wynn to be the party’s top fundraiser, came under fire in 2016 for a video in which he made lewd comments while taping the television program “Access Hollywood” in 2005. Separately, 19 women have accused the president of sexual misconduct.

Democratic Departures

As powerful men across an array of industries have been accused of harassing and abusing women, both parties have had to deal with misconduct allegations in their ranks. Democrats forced high-profile incumbents, including Senator Al Franken of Minnesota and Representative John Conyers of Michigan, to resign.

Among Republics, Representative Blake Farenthold of Texas decided not to seek re-election after a report surfaced that he used $ 84,000 of taxpayer money to settle a sexual-harassment complaint brought by a former aide.

Harvey Weinstein

Republicans have been critical of Democrats for accepting money from the movie producer Harvey Weinstein, who was a prolific fundraiser for the party as well. In response to the allegations of sexual misconduct against Weinstein, the RNC’s McDaniel tweeted that returning his money “would be a no-brainer.”

According to the Journal, which said it had contacted more than 150 people who worked with Wynn, he coerced the manicurist and massage therapists to perform sex acts for $ 1,000 tips.

In his statement denying the allegations, Wynn told the Journal that it was “deplorable for anyone to find themselves in this situation.”

The RNC didn’t respond to requests for comment. Michael Weaver, a spokesman for Wynn Resorts, declined to say whether he would remain at the RNC.

Remaining Silent

Democrats were quick to pounce. “They remain silent amid sexual assault allegations involving Steve Wynn, one of their party’s most senior officials,” spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said in a statement. “We believe that women must be empowered and respected.”

Wynn and Trump have a long history. They competed in the Atlantic City casino market two decades ago — a period that included a fierce court battle. They have since made amends, though Wynn has said he didn’t fully embrace Trump until he had already won.

Wynn said Trump asked him to be the committee’s finance chairman before the inauguration. His duties include building a national network of fundraisers and courting major donors, who increasingly have more options amid the rise of outside groups that can raise and spend unlimited sums.

Steve Bannon Ousted From Breitbart

Steve Bannon will step down as executive chairman of Breitbart, the far-right website he ran before and after working as a chief strategist to President Trump. According to The New York Times, “Mr. Bannon’s departure, which was forced by a onetime financial patron, Rebekah Mercer, comes as Mr. Bannon remained unable to quell the furor over remarks attributed to him in a new book in which he questions President Trump’s mental fitness and disparages his elder son, Donald Trump Jr.” Mercer rebuked Bannon last week following his public feud with Trump over the comments—a feud that resulted in the president publicly nicknaming his ex-strategist “Sloppy Steve.” In a statement, Bannon said he is “proud of what the Breitbart team has accomplished.” Sirius XM, which carries a Breitbart radio show, said in a statement that Bannon “will no longer host on Sirius XM.”

Trump: ‘Watch What Happens’ to ‘Sloppy Steve’ Bannon and Michael Wolff

President Trump took to Twitter late Thursday to rage at former chief strategist Steve Bannon and Michael Wolff, the author of an explosive new book on his presidency. Wolff’s Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House has triggered a political firestorm with its unflattering portrayal of dysfunction under Trump’s command, with Bannon earning special wrath from the president for his damning comments included in the book. Trump on Thursday slammed the “phony book,” claiming it is “full of lies, misrepresentations and sources that don’t exist.” “Look at this guy’s past and watch what happens to him and Sloppy Steve!” he said. The president’s remarks come after his lawyers reportedly tried to halt the book’s release with a cease-and-desist letter accusing Wolff and the book’s publisher of “actual malice.” The letter backfired, however, with the publisher bumping up the book’s release date due to “unprecedented demand.”

On Tuesday night, the big news was President Donald Trump comparing (via Twitter) the size of his nuclear “button” to that of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un—even though the button on Trump’s desk does not order a nuclear strike, but by his own admission orders a valet to bring him a Diet Coke.

Steve Stoute’s New Venture, UnitedMasters, Disrupts the Record Industry

Steve Stoute (Image: Instagram)

The record industry has been ripe for disruption for years and who better to do it than music veteran Steve Stoute. His new venture, UnitedMasters, will help up-and-coming artists get their music on streaming platforms such as Spotify and Pandora and use online tools to market the musicians and help them reach fans, according to The Wall Street Journal, and investors came through for this one.

Investors

Superstar investment firms backed the company including Google parent Alphabet Inc., Andreessen Horowitz, and 21st Century Fox, totaling $ 70 million.

“The new firm helps answer the question of how do you convert cultural capital into financial capital,” said Ben Horowitz in a statement.

Background

The San Francisco-based company already houses a 40-person team and because of Stoute’s background as a leading music industry exec for labels including Interscope and Sony Music Entertainment, he knows very specifically what the music industry needs in order to reinvent its business model.

Steve Stoute (Image: Instagram) Steve Stoute (Image: Instagram)

Business Model

Similar to CD Baby, a platform that rose to popularity in the early 2000s, artists who work with UnitedMasters will pay to have the company distribute their work. UnitedMasters has teamed up with music streaming services as distribution partners aiming to keep low price points for their users. There is also a variation in payout. Whereas some services only offer payments per stream, UnitedMasters is allowing the artists to diversify the payment structure to include ticket sales and merchandise.

Data Analytics

The most important point to note here is UnitedMasters will help brands connect with highly targeted audiences through data analytics. The difference between the music industry and Stoute’s platform is the label never knows who specifically is purchasing the artist’s music. However, with this service being driven by data, UnitedMasters can provide the brands with insights that the companies can A/B test against, therefore better-targeting the consumer.

“Brands are spending hundreds of millions of dollars trying to get to young people by using music as the vehicle,” Stoute said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. “Being able to use music data and making it actionable so they can target and speak to these fans, that’s super important.”

UnitedMasters will live under Translation Enterprises, which also houses Stoute’s ad agency, Translation.

Mompreneur and Son Invent Unique Product and Pitch Steve Harvey

The Unique Seat creators Shirley and Addison Hayden with Steve Harvey on Steve Harvey's Funderdome

Shirley and Addison Hayden are entrepreneurs who recently pitched their product, The Unique Seat, on Steve Harvey’s Funderdome TV show. Black Enterprise contributor Brandon Andrews sat down with the pair to find out exactly what The Unique Seat is and how in the world they came up with the invention.

STEVE HARVEY’S FUNDERDOME - "Episode 105" - The seed-funding competition reality series "Steve Harvey's FUNDERDOME" featuring two aspiring inventors going head-to-head to win over a live studio audience to fund their ideas, products or companies airs SUNDAY, AUGUST 13 (9:00-10:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Lisa Rose) STEVE HARVEY, ADDISON HAYDEN, SHIRLEY HAYDEN (UNIQUE SEAT) (Steve Harvey, Addison Hayden, and Shirley Hayden on Funderdome. Image: The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Lisa Rose))

Brandon Andrews: Tell us the Unique Seat story. When were you inspired to start the business?

Shirley: They often say that necessity is the mother of invention. Having a young child at the time and wanting to have an enjoyable day going to the beach created the necessity for The Unique Seat for me and many other outdoor enthusiasts. I recall how frustrating it was to pack and carry all the comforts of home with us to enjoy a family day at the beach. That’s when the idea for The Unique Seat came to me. After setting up for the day at the beach I sat thinking, “there has to be a better way to do this” and I received a clear vision of what The Unique Seat would look like. I remember coming home and drawing the vision in detail and therefore beginning the creation of my first prototype.

I showed my handmade prototype to my friend Sybil and she was so excited that she encouraged me to market “The Unique Seat.”  She was so inspired she even came up with our tagline: “Carry Your Indoor Comforts to Your Outdoor Fun.”

We started the search to find a company to manufacture and make a real prototype. After some time passed, I finally started working with ProtoSew, The Unique Seat [took] form and become a real product. It has changed three times since the original handmade prototype, and each time it gets better.

The Unique Seat is a “unique’ combination of innovations; blanket, seats, materials, etc. How did you decide on this mix of pieces to create the product?

Addison: The way that the pieces were selected for The Unique Seat included ideas to enjoy outdoor events in comfort, as well as fixing the annoying flaws that came along with these items. The Unique Seat is equipped with two versatile chairs that attach to bleachers, roll into pillows, and have pockets. The interconnected queen-sized blanket is weighted on all of the corners as well as a waterproof bottom to keep everyone comfortable.

How did you feel pitching your business in the Funderdome?

Shirley: It was absolutely exhilarating pitching on Funderdome and this was actually our first time ever pitching together. Addison actually influenced me to take the pitch in a different direction. It was challenging at first to change what I had been doing, however with direction from our awesome casting team and our team at home, we started to get comfortable with the new pitch. Stepping on the stage to pitch the audience was really one of the greatest moments for me personally. It also played a huge part in helping me overcome my issue with stage fright.

Addison: While pitching on Steve Harvey’s Funderdome I was very nervous, but also confident in our product. The energy of the crowd definitely helped get us excited to where we were able to speak genuinely and keep our enthusiasm.

You won the audience vote! Were you tempted to cash out?

Addison: Before we arrived at the show I told my mother we were in it to win it so we would not take the cash out offer no matter what. Throughout the show, I was not tempted to cash out because of how the crowd reacted to our product. My mom, on the other hand, looked like she wanted to take the offer. Given the amount of hard work and money put into The Unique Seat, the decision to not cash out was validated by the Funderdome crowd and through their constant excitement.

Shirley: I was pretty sure we had a proven product and believed the audience would use The Unique Seat more often than our competition. I was not tempted to cash out but did a check in with Addison just in case. He was really clear with a smile and his “no way” look so cashing out was not an option and I am glad it wasn’t needed.

Stephen Colbert Flashes Nazi Salute During Rant About Steve Bannon and Trump

Stephen Colbert was as quick to poke fun at President Trump and his administration as ever on The Late Show Thursday night. This week, Steve Bannon, the president’s recently-ousted chief strategist, bore the brunt of the digs contained in Colbert’s opening monologue.

Bannon’s first formal television interview, with Charlie Rose on CBS, will be broadcast this Sunday – and Colbert had a few things to say about it. “This Sunday, Bannon’s making his first post-White House TV appearance right here on CBS,” he said. “Surprisingly, it is not as a corpse on NCIS. How long was this guy floating in the harbor?’”

Colbert then discussed Bannon’s defense of Trump when the President delayed calling out violent white supremacists following the protests in Charlottesville. He played a clip of Bannon talking about the issue with Rose, in which the former chief strategist says he was “the only guy that came out and tried to defend [Trump].” “I was the only guy that said, ‘He’s talking about something, taking it up to a higher level,” he adds in the clip.

The camera then panned back to Colbert, who smirked: “Yeah he’s definitely taking it up to a higher level.” The comedian then lifted his right up into the air – demonstrating a Nazi salute.

“And over here [and] somewhere up there,” he added, upping the ante by making two more Nazi salutes as both groans and laughter could be heard among the audience. Trump has responded to Colbert’s previous jabs by calling him a “no-talent guy.” But the edgy bits are working for Colbert, who has seen a ratings bump since Trump’s inauguration.

Steve Harvey’s Funderdome: PoundPoms Creator Sherry Leetham

Pound Poms creator Sherry Leetham with Steve Harvey on Steve Harvey's Funderdome

On Episode 4 of Steve Harvey’s Funderdome, Sherry Leetham pitched her product, PoundPoms—weighted cheerleading pom poms for working out. Leetham is a former cheerleader.

Hosted by Steve Harvey, entrepreneurs pitch in a head-to-head competition to “The Funderdome” (a live studio audience) for the chance to win up to $ 100K in capital. The pitch that gets the most votes wins the money. Before the winner is announced, both competitors get the chance to “cash out” for a lower sum of money.

Brandon Andrews of Values Partnerships sat down with Sherry for an exclusive interview after the show.

STEVE HARVEY’S FUNDERDOME - "Episode 104" - Aspiring inventors hoping to win over a live studio audience to fund their ideas, products or companies include: swimsuit pieces that can be used as either a top or a bottom, weighted pompoms, and a plate that converts into a container to store the uneaten portion of kids' meals, on an all-new episode of the seed-funding competition reality series, "Steve Harvey's FUNDERDOME," airing on SUNDAY, JULY 9 (9:00-10:00 p.m.), on The ABC Television Network. (PoundPoms creator Sherry Leetham and Steve Harvey. Image: ABC/Lisa Rose)

Why are you so passionate about fitness, and how did that passion lead you to create PoundPoms?

Wow…I’m not sure there’s enough space to explain my passion. When I first became a professional in the fitness industry, a mentoring colleague said, “If your body breaks down…where ya gonna live?” That struck home for me because prior to becoming a professional in the fitness industry, I was a social worker and although I didn’t have a weight problem, I did have a stress problem.

As an LCSW (Licensed Certified Social Worker) who specialized in child sexual abuse, I saw the wicked of the wicked. Stress led me to scratch my hair out in my sleep and most horribly, dislocate my shoulder in my sleep. I would awaken to a nightmare of me screaming and then immediately having to calm myself so I could relax and put my shoulder back in. Even talking about it now gives me the heebie-jeebies!

Stress can lead to a variety of health disorders and exercising helped me to become healthy both inside and out. I strongly believe that health starts from ones’ mindset. It’s important to keep positive and motivational thoughts. My passion for fitness starts with my personal mantra “Internal Health, External Beauty.” What I learned as a counselor benefited me greatly when I became a fitness pro.

How did this lead to PoundPoms?

Nothing says motivation like cheerleading! On Funderdome, I explain how I recognized that cheer motions are weight training movements. This light bulb-moment inspired the creation of my CheerKamp dance fitness class! However, people hate working out and I needed a FUN super-duper razzle-dazzle element to offer the true cheerleader experience, combined with an element of fitness. That was the birth of PoundPoms! The name of my company is FIT 2 CHEER, and it doesn’t mean being physically fit to look like a cheerleader but being mentally fit to cheer yourself on—especially when sometimes there is no one but you.

How can someone use PoundPoms to get into shape?

Keep in mind, PoundPoms are weights. Using them in conjunction with the CheerKamp dance fitness class will be like weight training to music. (BTW the “K” in Kamp represents the kinetic movements of the workout based on the Exercise Science of Kinesiology!) Secondly, according to ACE Fitness (American Council on Exercise) moving at 120 bpm (Beats Per Minute) with 1 lbs-3 lbs in your hands will increase your heart rate by 5 – 10 beats per minute and oxygen consumption (as well as caloric expenditure) by about 5% – 15%. At best, the use of PoundPoms can increase muscle tone and muscular endurance. Basically, they assist in helping you tone your muscles and lose your fat.

Congrats! You won $ 10,000 on the show. Were you tempted to cash out?

Leetham: Oh my…what a moment! People were yelling and I couldn’t distinguish NO!!! From, GO!!! The temptation existed because “some money is better than no money.” When it got up to $ 3500, I was tempted and right before I considered hitting, a lady behind me screams: “SHERRY! You betta NOT hit that button!” Whoever she was, I know she was a mom because she stopped me dead in my tracks as if my own mother were scolding me! Thank God for her because when I turned to look at her, as if I had snuck a cookie from the cookie jar, that’s when Kirston hit the button.

Give us a post-show update. How do you plan to grow your business in 2017?

Leetham: This opportunity has not only been the perfect validation for my business but it’s the perfect launch pad for my business. The show afforded me the opportunity to produce my CheerKamp workout video, and increase production of PoundPoms.

Plus, I’ve partnered with the Cancer Exercise Training Institute and we have created PoundPoms 4 Recovery, a motivational exercise program in support of our cancer survivors. My goal is to help take them out of the medical mindset of their cancer and move them toward a motivational mindset of recovery.

Steve Bannon OUT as White House Chief Strategist

Steve Bannon is OUT as White House chief strategist.

The official word is that he resigned, but there are also reports suggesting he was ‘pushed’ out by Trump.

via NY Times:

President Trump has told senior aides that he has decided to remove Stephen K. Bannon, the embattled White House chief strategist who helped Mr. Trump win the 2016 election, according to two administration officials briefed on the discussion.

The president and senior White House officials were debating when and how to dismiss Mr. Bannon. The two administration officials cautioned that Mr. Trump is known to be averse to confrontation within his inner circle, and could decide to keep on Mr. Bannon for some time.

As of Friday morning, the two men were still discussing Mr. Bannon’s future, the officials said. A person close to Mr. Bannon insisted the parting of ways was his idea, and that he had submitted his resignation to the president on Aug. 7, to be announced at the start of this week, but it was delayed in the wake of the racial unrest in Charlottesville, Va.

Mr. Bannon had clashed for months with other senior West Wing advisers and members of the president’s family.

But the loss of Mr. Bannon, the right-wing nationalist who helped propel some of Mr. Trump’s campaign promises into policy reality, raises the potential for the president to face criticism from the conservative news media base that supported him over the past year.

Mr. Bannon’s many critics bore down after the violence in Charlottesville. Outraged over Mr. Trump’s insistence that “both sides” were to blame for the violence that erupted at a white nationalist rally, leaving one woman dead, human rights activists demanded that the president fire so-called nationalists working in the West Wing. That group of hard-right populists in the White House is led by Mr. Bannon.

Bye Bannon!

Steve Harvey’s Funderdome: Fishing Caddy Creator Joe Pippins

The Fishing Caddy CEO Joe Pippins on Steve Harvey's Funderdome

Joe Pippins from Kansas pitched his product, the Fishing Caddy, on “Steve Harvey’s Funderdome.” On the show, entrepreneurs pitch in a head-to-head competition for the chance to win up to $ 100,000 in funding. The pitch that gets the most audience votes wins the money. Before the winner is announced, both competitors get the chance to “Cash Out” for a lower sum of money.

Brandon Andrews of Values Partnerships sat down with Pippins after the show.

(Steve Harvey and Fishing Caddy CEO Joe Pippins. Image: ABC/Lisa Rose)

Brandon Andrews: Tell us The Fishing Caddy story. Also, what’s the best catch you’ve ever made?

Joe Pippins: I took up fishing much like a lot of famous fishermen, including Tiger Woods, Oprah, and even President Obama. There are over 46 million fishermen in the United States, and 26% of them fish as a way to reduce stress and spend time in nature. However, I quickly noticed that the process to begin fishing was such a hassle and had a lot of unnecessary repetitive steps.

My rods were too far away. When I used metal rod holders I would run down only to find my bait and fish gone. I had to carry my tackle box to store my tackle, a bucket to sit on, a stringer to hold my catch, and flashlights for visibility at night. It felt like I had a mountain of gear with each item only serving one purpose. You have only two hands so I would often have to make several trips. The worst part is we fishermen fish to bond and make memories with family and friends. That’s hard to do when you’re stressed out fighting your gear on every trip.

I would get excited about going fishing but then sometimes wouldn’t due to me being short on time. I realized that half my time allotted for fishing [was spent]  just messing with my gear. Then the light bulb went off. What if I combined all the necessary items I need to fish into one product: A place to sit; a place to hold your tackle; a place to hold your rods securely; ways to notice your bites 200% quicker; [and] a place to keep your fish when you take them home to prepare them for a meal.

Then, I wondered how to keep it from tipping over. That’s when the light bulb went off again. Why not just use the unlimited resource of water weight? So the first step in using The Fishing Caddy is to dip it in water adding up to 40 lbs of water weight to keep it from tipping over if you left it unattended.

I knew I was on to something revolutionary because everyone kept asking me if they could buy one. So I started selling my “prototypes” to customers made out of Home Depot parts all across America to prove my concept. I was making sales of the homemade prototypes and with great feedback. Each Fishing Caddy was handmade including the seat that I hand stitched to perfection. It took about one hour to make one Fishing Caddy at this point. So after my day job in finance I would be up until 3:00 a.m. spray painting parts. Often times, I went to work the next day with black paint everywhere including my hands.

It was important [for] me to find flaws now instead of when I went to mass production, so I put a 60-Day Money Back Guarantee on each Fishing Caddy and followed up with each customer after their order to get feedback. Needless to say there were a few design flaws I needed to change. So with the customer feedback I kept making improvements over the last three years to design and build the model you see today, The Fishing Caddy 2.0.

My wife has been my best catch! We have been married since high school and were teen parents. She has been patient and has been as supportive of my vision as a serial entrepreneur for The Fishing Caddy brand and bringing it to market. So she is my prized catch.

Andrews: What makes The Fishing Caddy different?

Pippins: The Fishing Caddy was designed and built with the feedback from real fishermen and the wives of fishermen over the last three years. So, I didn’t just build something that I thought was effective. I listened to my customers, which is why it has been so well received.

There is no other product on the market that combines all your gear into one product that can be used year around. We are the first to market with this approach and the [created the] world’s first all-in-one; year-round fishing system. You can use it in a variety of outdoors situations and environments including bank fishing which accounts for 50% of all fishing in the USA. The Fishing Caddy can be used in the boat, piers, kayaks and even ice fishing.

The Fishing Caddy is very well built and made in the USA which is something I’m proud of. In the fishing industry, a large portion of the products are made in China and [are of] low quality.

Lastly, The Fishing Caddy has been a focal point of reconnecting people with memories of their childhood. Most of my customers have memories of fishing and often times those individuals have passed on. So when they go fishing with The Fishing Caddy, they instantly remember those people and memories that hold dear to their heart. Fishing is now a lot easier, modern, and streamlined. People are going fishing more to continue the legacy of the sport.

Andrews: “Get your daddy a Fishing Caddy! That is one of the most memorable lines from Season 1 of “Funderdome.” How did you prepare for your pitch?

Pippins: My pitch–yes it was so much fun! I remember going over my lines over and over sometimes even doing it to music just to make sure I could still execute and not get distracted. I drank blueberry juice, which is a great mental aide and even wrote down my vision of winning the show at least 30 times prior to taping the show.  The hardest part about my pitch was simplifying what The Fishing Caddy was since it’s an all-new concept. I wanted the audience to understand the most important features and remember them so I practiced at least three times a day.

Andrews: Congrats! You won capital on the show. Were you tempted to cash out?

Pippins: No, I knew I had prepared rigorously for that moment and didn’t come that far to take the easy way out. I came to win Funderdome and I visualized The Fishing Caddy being the fan favorite and it happened!

Andrews: Give us a post-show update. How do you plan to grow your business in 2017?

Pippins: Since 70% of my customers are women I plan on making an infomercial and desire to make an appearance on HSN where my customers are already buying. The Fishing Caddy makes an excellent unique gift idea with many 5-star reviews from both the gift giver and the end user.

We also are already planning to approach major companies such as Boy Scouts of America and other corporations such as UPS, Ford, Chevrolet, or organizations to build and design a Fishing Caddy for their companies. I see a military-branded Fishing Caddy coming down the pipe as well since the majority of our end users have bravely served our country. So these corporations will have a product to offer to their employees that’s unique, made in the USA, and shows thoughtfulness. It’s been proven: Employees that participate is hobbies such as fishing are overall happier and have higher production and better work/ life balance.

Andrews: What do entrepreneurs like you need to be successful? How can shows like “Funderdome” help?

Pippins: I believe the first thing entrepreneurs need to be successful is to get their idea out. What I originally thought would be The Fishing Caddy and what it is today is quite a bit different. Had I kept this idea to myself and not did everything I could to get proof of concept and sales, I would not have even been selected to appear on “Funderdome.”

Secondly, you must know the difference between critics and consumers. Critics offer nothing of value they just want to tear you down. These type of people are negative and don’t bring any value to your vision. Consumers offer advice on how to make your product better. They will be the first to say, “Try this and I would buy it if you offered this.”  Take their advice and listen to them. There [are] often huge rewards in having thick skin.

“Funderdome” will help you get awareness out and attract resources to fill the gap in the areas you may need help with bringing a great idea to market. To any fellow entrepreneurs/inventors; apply to “Funderdome” to help bring your dream to reality and get funded.

Steve Harvey’s Funderdome: Wonderffle Stuffed Waffle Iron Creator Mike Bradford

Wonderffle Waffle Iron Creator Mike Bradford on Steve Harvey's Funderdome

On Episode 3 of Steve Harvey’s Funderdome, Mike Bradford from Texas pitched his product, the Wonderffle Waffle Iron.

Brandon Andrews of Values Partnerships sat down with Mike after the show.

Stuffed waffles! What’s the “Wonderffle” story?

My first encounter with a plate of chicken and waffles became the genesis of Wonderffle. Growing up, that wasn’t a dish that I was too familiar with. In fact, I thought it was a silly concept. To me, waffles were only for breakfast and fried chicken was for only for lunch or dinner. One day, while at lunch with co-workers, though, I saw them for the first time in real life. Just seeing that plate of waffles covered with a big slab of syrup-drizzled fried chicken got me thinking of the state of waffles in this world. Waffles just hadn’t kept up with our busy lifestyles. You can’t eat them on the go without making a mess unless you’re eating a plain waffle—and that’s no fun.

So first thing I did was to look for a better waffle maker. After a pretty thorough search, I decided to use my engineering background to build my own. Three years later, I introduced my invention to the public.

Why is this a better way to make waffles?

Bradford: Oh, I could go on about this all day. Well, first of all, they’re not just waffles. I like to think of it as a meal in a waffle. It’s rare that one eats a waffle by itself. It’s usually accompanied by some other staple. But a waffle meal isn’t easily eaten apart from sitting down at the table with a knife and fork. That just doesn’t lend itself to most folks’ busy lifestyles where we often find ourselves eating on the go. This device is not meant to help you slow down, but it will let you take your favorite waffle meal with you on the go with you.

Not only does it make a superior waffle, the device has plenty of stand-out features. There’s almost no appliance I hate cleaning more than my conventional waffle maker. They’re just so bulky, it’s hard to get into those grooves with my cleaning utensil. The Wonderffle Stuffed Waffle Iron is small and modular. It easily comes apart so that you can clean it right in your sink.

Its small size allows it be easily stowed away in your cabinets. Don’t we all have enough stuff taking up counter space? And it’s made almost entirely from durable metal, so like those old-school waffle makers, it’s built to last.

Lastly, it’s cordless. You can cook on the stovetop, the oven, or even on the outdoor grill. I think it’s a great device to make meals for your family at home or at your next reunion.

Your pitch on the show was stuffed with enthusiasm. How did you feel pitching your business in the Funderdome?

Pitching The Wonderffle Stuffed Waffle Iron to the studio audience was definitely one of the most exhilarating experiences so far for me. There was just so much energy in the crowd. That guy who yelled out, “Put some more chicken in that!” that wasn’t staged. I was up there giving my pitch and it was all I could do to keep my composure. And there were several other fun moments like that that didn’t make it on the air.

I remember sitting in my dressing room before going on stage and my producers kept coming in to tell me how hype the crowd was. They kept reminding me to “bring the energy.”

Besides, it just came naturally to me to address the audience that way. I was determined to above all go out there and have fun and represent myself and my product well. It’s hard to take oneself too seriously when talking about stuffed waffles. Plus, with Steve Harvey as the host, you know the atmosphere is going to be off the chain. Personally, I’m pretty measured and reserved, but I knew that a big part of my job out there was to win the crowd over. Ultimately, I want people to be excited about my product, but I don’t want my naturally dull personality to quench that excitement.

You won $ 50,000 in capital on the show. Were you tempted to cash out?

Well, there’s always the temptation to take the sure money. As Steve says on the show, “Some money is better than no money.” But there were two reasons why I decided not to cash out. First, my product is not out on the market yet, unlike my competitor’s. So this was in some ways a bit of market research. If the audience didn’t choose my product, I was going to consider that to mean it isn’t compelling enough to continue. A device like this requires a lot of capital. Even though I won $ 50,000, it would take substantially more than that for me to get this mass produced. So if I had cashed out, it would have signaled to the viewers that I was still willing to go through with production and I would have had to get that much more funding. Second, I was just following the audience’s lead. Every time I moved my hand anywhere near that cash out button, I could hear folks screaming, “Nooooooo!” So I just trusted that the majority really did vote for my product and I wasn’t just hearing a few maniacal voices closest to me!

Give us a post-show update. How do you plan to grow your business in 2017?

My primary focus right now is getting the product manufactured and delivered to customers. I’ve been taking pre-orders on my site since before the show aired, so I’ve got a number of orders waiting to be fulfilled.

Beyond production, I’m managing my own marketing. I’m just working two fronts right now: email and social media.

My mailing list is kind of like my second family now. Not only do they get special discounts, I’m regularly sending them text and video updates. And I just started sending periodic recipes with high-quality photos detailing the steps. I try to keep these posts memorable so that they can have something else to look forward to while they wait on their stuffed waffle irons to arrive. And I’m also sending regular promo videos and other updates through my social media channels.

I also enjoy engaging with customers and followers. One recent customer who bought two stuffed waffle irons wrote me, “It’s because of those darn recipes you autosend me that finally broke me. You are evil so I will buy those darn waffle irons!” I’m just doing my job.

What do entrepreneurs like you need to be successful? How can shows like Funderdome help?

Besides just determining to get out there and get your idea going, any entrepreneur needs to be willing to get their hands dirty. Of course, there are times and circumstances where you need to delegate or hire out, but bootstrapping your business requires that you are intimately involved in every aspect of its workings. There’s a level of confidence that says, “I’m going to be my own engineer, designer, marketing and social media manager, photographer, and bookkeeper.” You’ll be required to be the subject matter expert on pretty much everything.

Obviously, you can’t do it all, so you’ll have to know when and how to get help. But some of my most expensive mistakes so far have occurred when I outsourced something just because I was too afraid to make a go at it myself.

I’m preaching to myself here. I’m still learning, but I feel like I’m getting better and more confident with each bridge I cross.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

Steve Harvey’s Funderdome: Tri Bow Tie Creator Marlon Rhodeman

On Episode 4 of Steve Harvey’s Funderdome, Marlon Rhodeman from St. Louis pitched his product, the Tri Bow Tie. Brandon Andrews of Values Partnerships sat down with Marlon after the show.

Brandon Andrews: Why are you so passionate about bow ties? What’s the story?

Marlon Rhodeman: In 2008, I worked for a juvenile detention facility in Brooklyn, New York, and a kid asked me if he could wear my bow tie to court because he believed if he did, the judge would let him go. Well, he wore it and the judge did let him go.

Andrews: What does Tri Bow Tie do that regular bow ties do not?

Rhodeman: Tri Bow Tie is the first pre-tied bow tie collection that gives you the quality and character of the self-tie bow tie, yet allows you to fully interchange and customize your bow tie. The bow tie consists of three parts, the center strap, and the left and right wing, all which you can interchange with any other Tri Bow Tie. As little as three bow ties gives you a combination of over 20 unique bow ties.

Andrews: How did you feel pitching your business in the Funderdome? What’s your top tip for entrepreneurs pitching their businesses?

Rhodeman: It felt amazing pitching Tri Bow Tie in the Funderdome. The energy, the opportunity, and the support was amazing. My advice for entrepreneurs pitching their business, is to keep it exciting, short, make it understandable while making sure you see why your product is unique and will be beneficial. Confidence is the key!

Andrews: Congrats! You won capital on the show. Were you tempted to cash out?

Rhodeman: I was not tempted to cash out because I believed so much in my product, that I knew I had the audience’s popular vote.

Andrews: Give us a post-show update. How do you plan to grow your business in 2017?

Rhodeman: I plan on building our celebrity endorsement platform, while putting Tri Bow Tie in the public eye through media. People have to know you exist, then you can present your product to them.

Tri Bow Tie creator Marlon Rhodeman wins on Steve Harvey's Funderdome

(Ehdra Frazier, Steve Harvey, and Tri Bow Tie creator Marlon Rhodeman. Image: ABC/Lisa Rose)

Andrews: You pitched against another amazing black entrepreneur – Dome Essentials CEO Ehdra Frazier. The host of the show–Steve Harvey—is also a black man and a producer of the show. How did it feel to be on stage with Ehdra and Steve? What do you think this moment says about black entrepreneurship?

Rhodeman: It was emotional being on stage with Steve and Ehdra. That platform was a statement to African Americans that through opposition, tribulation, and resilience, you can do anything you put your mind to. Failing happens, but being a failure should never be an option. We as a people have come so far, and I think if we realize the gifts and talents God placed in us, and acted upon them, we could turn our society around.

Steve Harvey Scores Two Daytime Emmy Awards

Steve Harvey

Actor, comic, and media personality Steve Harvey added two more Emmy wins to his portfolio on Sunday at the 44th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

Harvey took home the Outstanding Game Show Host award for hosting Family Feud along with the Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host Emmy for his syndicated talk show, Steve Harvey. The veteran comedian, however, was not present to receive the awards in person during the live taping, which took place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California.

In addition to hosting those two Emmy-winning shows, Harvey also hosts a string of other programs. The star-studded version of his hit game show, Celebrity Family Feud, will debut on June 11 on ABC and feature stars such as Amy Schumer and George Lopez. Harvey’s own family members are also set to make an appearance on the show, reports TV Insider.

Ironically, his new reality competition, titled Steve Harvey’s Funderdome, will premiere on the same exact day and station. On the show, up-and-coming entrepreneurs will go head-to-head to compete for funding for their business, which will be determined by a live studio audience.

Meanwhile, the Little Big Shots spinoff, Little Big Shots: Forever Young, will premiere on NBC on June 21. Rather than showcase talented children, Harvey will conduct his signature couch interviews with senior citizens with unique talents and big personalities. Just like the original series, Harvey has teamed up with Ellen DeGeneres to executive produce the series.

And, if you still can’t get enough of the original king of comedy, you can also catch him emceeing the upcoming season of Showtime at the Apollo. Harvey will host the legendary music and comic showcase, which has been picked up by Fox, in a weekly series.

Steve Harvey’s Funderdome: V-Smart Bar Creator Tanya Tibbs

Steve Harvey's Funderdome - Tanya Tibbs - VSmart Bar

On the show “Steve Harvey’s Funderdome,” entrepreneurs pitch in a head-to-head competition to “The Funderdome” (a live studio audience) for the chance to win up to $ 100K in capital. The pitch that gets the most votes wins the money. Before the winner is announced, both competitors get the chance to “Cash Out” for a lower sum of money.

Tanya Tibbs of Roswell, Georgia, pitched her product – The V-Smart Bar – in the Funderdome. Brandon Andrews of Values Partnerships (an agency that helps bring diverse entrepreneurs to the show) sat down with Tanya after the show for an interview.

(Tanya Tibbs, Steve Harvey, and Grant Morningstar (left-to-right). Image: ABC/Lisa Rose)

You are passionate about female health and wellness, tell us about the V-Smart Bar.

Tanya Tibbs: The V-Smart Bar is an herbal and essential oil based feminine hygiene bar that helps women with most common womb and skin issues. It was created for one of my sisters many years ago when she was suffering from womb and skin issues. The bar has a very powerful ingredient in it called goldenseal which is known to help cleanse the impurities out of your blood. I know that most common feminine hygiene products offer chemicals and perfumes which can cause irritation, dryness, and odor. I wanted to offer young girls/women an alternative non-fragrance line of soaps and womb wash for a holistic approach to feminine care.

(V-Smart Bar. Image: ABC/Lisa Rose)

Why does the V-Smart Bar work for women? What makes it different/better?

TT: My product works for women because we try to stay away from the chemicals, scents, and fillers that can cause a woman’s pH balance to be disrupted, which triggers more problems. The formula, created with herbs/essential oils, helps the female reproductive system.

How did you feel pitching your business in the Funderdome?

TT: Wow. Where do I start? The fact that they found me online from an old video made me quickly understand the power of social media. You never know who’s watching! Being a spiritual person at heart, I felt that the love of God was definitely showing me favor. I was a bit nervous at first, but I’m a firm believer that Spirit doesn’t offer you opportunities unless you’re ready. I felt like it was my time to share the V-Smart Bar with the world. Pitching to the Funderdome was very scary but I knew it was my one shot to help millions of young girls/women all over the world!

Congrats! You won $ 10,000 in capital on the show. Were you tempted to cash out?

TT:  Thanks. Yes, I won $ 10,000 on the show! No, I was not tempted to press the button at all. Something deep inside of me knew I was going to win. I actually kind of stepped back with an assurance that I was going to win.

Give us a post-show update. How do you plan to grow your business in 2017?

Tibbs: What’s up next for the V-Smart brand? Well, we are looking at putting our product in a big box store so that more girls/women can have direct access to the product which would allow us to help more. We have mastered having a storefront and with the winnings we are going mobile so we plan to purchase a used RV and transform it into a “Wombpreneur on Wheels” so we can go mobile/global and be a part of all the big health fairs, jazz festivals, hair shows, and conferences! It’s time to go into urban neighborhoods and women prisons across the world.

What do entrepreneurs like you need to be successful? How can shows like Funderdome help?

Tibbs: Wow! I first became an entrepreneur when I was 19 years old as a hairstylist/salon owner. I’m 46 now and could write several books on what every entrepreneur needs to know. Entrepreneurs need to know that if they are the only one who believes in their dream then it’s more than enough. They have to understand that failure is the best teacher, and you have to be “comfortable with being uncomfortable.” Every door that the Spirit opens is another step to your ultimate dream.

You will always face some hardships but never give up!! I feel that every businesses core mission should be to help someone and to spread kindness, peace, love, and joy with the gifts the Spirit has given you!! We are only here to serve and make people, communities, and this world a better place!! Entrepreneurship has come a long way and I’m so happy that we can now access so much information to help us grow our businesses.

Steve Scalise’s Condition Upgraded to Serious As Family and Friends Rally Around the Congressman

Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise’s condition has been upgraded from critical to serious, PEOPLE confirms, as friends, family and colleagues continue to rally around him after he was shot and wounded last week during baseball practice.

“Doctors are happy with the progress he’s made,” Scalise’s press secretary, Lauren Fine, tells PEOPLE. “But his doctors said he will be in the hospital for some time.”

Scalise, (R-La.) the third-ranking GOP leader in the House, was one of four people shot when a gunman opened fire early Wednesday morning while the Republican team practiced in Alexandria, Virginia, for the annual bipartisan Congressional Baseball Game.

When Chief Deputy Whip Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) found out that his close friend and colleague was among those who had been shot, “I just didn’t think it could be real,” he tells PEOPLE.

“There were other members there that morning who were shot at who are lucky and blessed to be alive,” he says. “A lot of folks have been affected by this. It’s shaken everyone up in a serious way.”

Scalise, 51, was shot in the hip by a bullet that ripped through his body, causing severe damage to internal organs, his doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Friday.

While he was able to speak while he lay injured on the field, he suffered massive blood loss and went into shock, which left him in “imminent risk of death” upon arriving at the hospital via helicopter, his doctors said Friday.

Since Wednesday, he has undergone several surgeries, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement released on behalf of his family.

On Saturday, he underwent yet another surgery, MedStar said.

“He continues to show signs of improvement,” the statement said. “He is more responsive and is speaking to his loved ones.”

During a press conference on Saturday, Scalise’s trauma surgeon, Dr. Jack Sava, said he is expected to recover fully but will need “a period of healing and rehabilitation” after being discharged.

Besides Scalise, congressional aide Zach Barth, Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika, and US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner were shot during the rampage. Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were also injured during the incident.

Bailey was injured from bullet fragments while exchanging fire with the shooter, Fine says.

The gunman, identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, died from injuries he sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.

‘Team Scalise’ Rallies for Its Beloved Leader

While Scalise continues to recover, a tight-knit group of family, friends, and colleagues continue to hold vigil at his bedside and at the hospital.

“Everyone is hopeful,” says Fine.

Since Wednesday, Scalise’s wife, Jennifer, his sister and other family members, close friends from Louisiana and colleagues have packed into a waiting room in the hospital.

Scalise’s high-profile visitors have included Pres. Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and fellow Congressman Cedric Richmond, (D-La.)

As those gathered at the hospital dined on ‘southern comfort food’ like Chik Filet and other goodies sent to the hospital by well-wishers, Jennifer Scalise and her sister-in-law greet visitors with hugs.

“They are a warm family,” says Fine.

So is his work family, says McHenry.

“Working with Steve makes you part of his family,” says McHenry.

Adds Fine: “People are very loyal to him. And he is loyal back to them. We are Team Scalise.”

Known to “just dive big into life,” Scalise started to feel more like himself on Saturday, when he cheered for his alma mater Louisiana State University’s baseball team on Twitter, saying, “Tigers win! Tigers win!”

On Sunday, Scalise’s Twitter account featured a Father’s Day message thanking well-wishers for their “outpouring of love” and giving a special nod to his family.

“Steve’s greatest joy is being a father to Madison and Harrison, and a husband to Jennifer,” the message read. “This Father’s Day has special meaning for the Scalise Family, and they send their best wishes to every family, especially the dads. Take the time to be close to the ones you love.”

Like many others, McHenry continues to pray for Scalise, saying he has the strength to pull through this ordeal.

“He’s the guy who finishes up at 3 in the morning and you see him at 6 in the morning back again and always has the same sort of optimism and happiness,” he says.

“I describe him as a tank,” he says. “He is just tough.”

Podcast Review: Chewin’ It with Kevin & Steve

Do you ever find yourself thinking “I wonder what those Broken Lizard guys with the funny movies like Super Troopers and Beerfest are doing?”

Ponder no longer.

2014-10-19-kevsteve.jpgBecause at least two of them are podcasting (and have been for the past couple of years.) Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme pop up weekly on the Nerdist network with their show Chewin’ It with Kevin and Steve. These guys will take any subject and run with it, as witnessed in this week’s show when Lemme recounts having to take his infant son to the E.R. the night before. Heart-wrenching as it must have been at the time (the junior Lemme is doing fine), Heffernan assures his podcast partner that he and his future teenaged son will be laughing over the hospital hijinks in years to come.

The two then begin recalling the many and varied reasons for them each having had to visit hospital emergency rooms throughout their lives: A failed leap from a nightspot’s bar. A severed Achilles tendon from kicking through a frat house glass door. A crime-does-not-pay-story involving stolen porn and a nasty spill on a sewer grate.

Clearly, when these guys aren’t making movies, they’re getting into way too much trouble. And then sharing those exploits with us, so that makes it all right.

Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years–as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues–Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted. Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

Psycho Steve – I Swam the Solent to Freedom. No Jail Can Hold Me

Psycho Steve – I Swam the Solent to Freedom. No Jail Can Hold Me

When a GBP 1 million construction deal starts to go pear shaped, and a London heavy mob working for the opposition ransack his house, Stephen Moyle is out for revenge. In a tale of violence and adventure via the North of England and Canada, Stephen recounts the events that led to a 3 and a half year jail term and his eventual sectioning. Having taken revenge of the mob that was terrorising his family and business deals, Stephen was imprisoned in HMP Lewis; but with the voices of God Almighty and the Devil guiding his thoughts Stephen’s actions on the inside were to get him moved to HMP Camp Hill, Isle of Wight, from which he was to make his daring escape. Having scaled the prison walls and made his way through the razor wire, a scratched and bloody Stephen set off to swim across the Solent back to his family. His escape mobilised the D11 specialist police unit and the hunt began…Whilst on the run, Stephen returned to his scamming and thieving ways, but despite it all he found time to marry his long-term girlfriend Judith. But after the wedding things went from bad to worse as the voice of God was still present in Stephen’s thoughts; after a publican is almost killed the D11 squad close in and Stephen is returned to prison. Stephen is eventually released but his spell on the outside is short lived when he is re-arrested for GBH on his wife. At the court hearing, Stephen was sectioned for life and sent to Broadmoor Secure Hospital.

Steve Wilkos Talks Jerry Springer And The Craziest Thing That Ever Happened (VIDEO)

Any Jerry Springer viewer knows how crazy the talk show can get, but Steve Wilkos’ story may take the cake.

While on HuffPost Live this week, the TV host opened up about a rather inappropriate moment on the notoriously dramatic talk show.

“Two guys were fighting, ripping their shirts off,” he explained. “This one guy gets his shirt taken off and he has a perfect formed female breast … and it’s gorgeous.”

The best part? He said he was born that way. Lady Gaga would be proud!
