Antony, who made his on-screen debut as Sean 15 years ago, said he thought he’d only be at the soap for three months when he first joined.

Now he’s hinted his character has got something “very different” in the pipeline.

Antony told The Sunday Mirror: “I’m doing the beginnings at the moment. It’s very, very new and very different.

“I’m proud of Sean. He’s been a beautiful part of my life for so long now.”

The actor previously admitted fans were always friendly towards him in the street because Sean is such a likeable character.

He said: “Coronation Street has recently attracted criticism for some of its dark story lines.

“But Antony feels like his own on-screen character breaks that mould.”

Sean – who has also appeared on I’m a Celebrity in 2011 – added: “I’m not one of those people where women batter you with their handbag because you’re a philanderer or murderer.”

He has also appeared in several episodes of Absolutely Fabulous and once had his own ITV chat show, That Antony Cotton Show.
