Muslim Stylist Hullema Reddick Finds Success In Haircare Business

According to a Pew Research Center estimate, Muslims comprise over 23% of the global population, but the haircare industry struggles to represent Muslim women. Haircare is for everyone; whether or not Muslim women choose to show their hair in public. Hullema Reddick, color stylist and owner of HStylez Hair studio in Philadelphia, is Muslim and wears a hijab which places her in a unique situation of acceptance—by both the beauty industry and her Muslim faith family. Known as “The Covered Colorist” Reddick has already grossed over $ 100,000 in sales in 2018 and continues to be a champion for Muslim women in the beauty industry.

The obvious lack of representation of Muslim women in the beauty industry has provided Reddick with an interesting perspective on being Muslim while also being a stylist. “It has enlightened me to the prejudices within the industry, and secondly it’s made me realize that women [Muslim and non-Muslim] are looking for meaningful and relatable inspiration,” says Reddick.

For Reddick, being able to provide relatable inspiration oftentimes comes with backlash from those in the Muslim community because of her chosen profession. Some view it as a contradiction to her religious belief.

“I am always confused about. I have yet to see where in Islam it says that we cannot beautify ourselves or be the source of the beautification process. Contrary to popular belief, it is one of the teachings of Islam that a woman should beautify herself, and look beautiful for her husband.”

To some, being fully covered from head to toe and being a stylist is considered taboo or unheard of. But as a small woman-owned business, Reddick does not allow the beauty industry to ostracize her, nor does she let those within her own community with an opposing view keep her from growing.

“I refuse to compromise my belief system just to fit in,” says Reddick. “I have had to make a stand that my talent speaks for itself and my appearance does not define me or my expertise.” Constantly evolving in her craft and enhancing her skills, Reddick finds new ways to create new looks. “I pride myself on giving a vibe you can’t find anywhere else. I pride myself in knowing that I am an artist.”

With a growing business and a focus on changing the perspective that Muslim women have no place in the beauty industry, Reddick has some very straightforward advice for young Muslim women interested in a similar career path.

“Remain firm in your belief and don’t compromise. Allow your creativity to open doors for you, and know with an unwavering sincerity that what’s for you is for you. What’s meant for you will not pass you. In addition, do not allow what people say discourage you. Not everyone is going to like what you’re doing, but keep in mind, you’re doing this for you not everyone else. Let what people can’t appreciate about you be that thing that makes you go harder.”

Celebrity Stylist Zerina Akers Opens Up About Her Personal Journey, Black Designers, and Working with Beyoncé [Photos]

If you’ve been wondering why Beyoncé’s fashion game has been on point lately, it’s because of celebrity stylist Zerina Akers.

As Beyoncé’s “personal stylist and wardrobe curator,” Zerina is the woman responsible for the looks you see on Bey’s Instagram as well as recent music videos.

Blessings on Blessings! #StyledbyZerinaAkers #Beyonce

A post shared by Zerina Akers (@zerinaakers) on

Look-by-look and client-by-client, Zerina’s continuing to make a name for herself in MAJOR ways.

In an interview with Le Magazine Noir, Zerina keeps it real about how she manages her work ethic, the importance of uplifting Black designers, and her proudest moment.

Check out a few excerpts:

On managing her work ethic: I recently turned 30 and I’ve decided that my 20s were for working hard, my 30s will be about working smart, and I will enjoy it all in my 40s. I don’t have a lot of time so I try to spend it wisely. When I have moments to just be with my people and be in my home, I make sure to cherish it and make it count. For me, now is about investing my time into what I want to create, and who I want  to be. In between pulls or running errands, I’ll try to catch up with my friends and family over the phone and make sure that no matter what they know that I think about them and I love them.

On Black designers: “There is so much talent in the World and often not enough resources for some people to truly express themselves through their craft. I have watched many young designers grow but I have also watched many designers stray away from their dreams. I just try to support them as much as I can because sometimes it’s the most simplest moment that can completely launch someone’s career and completely change their life.”

On working on Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’ hat look: “That was the fist time I realized that I can create work that will OUTLIVE MYSELF. That look was composed of all INDIE designers and became it’s own moment, it’s own image.”

When she’s not working with big names like Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Hudson, and Hilary Swank, celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger also divulges her fashion expertise in our Ask a Stylist column and fulfills her duties as the official Armi Captain at luxury rental and styling platform Armarium. From the best places to source vintage to the secret to finding your most flattering jeans, come back each week for a professional’s perspective.

Whether you work in fashion or not, when you hear that I work as a stylist, your first thought is most likely that my job is extremely glamorous. Although many parts of my job are glamorous, many things that I do on a daily basis are far from what you see on Instagram. Today, I’m sharing what I wish I’d known when I started as a stylist and some important things to learn in order to be successful.

Something that I’d like to share right away is I am extremely thankful and love the career I’ve created for myself very much. That said, today I’m highlighting the aspects that aren’t typically unveiled on social media. For example, I spend 80% of my time at FedEx preparing packages to send to my clients. What no one really talks about are the dull parts of being a stylist like packing and unpacking boxes and scheduling messengers. In my line of work, it’s all about learning to be organized because so much of your success is based on organization and client satisfaction.

However, as most would come to expect, my job also has amazing perks, and it’s a job where I get to be creative and work around beautiful clothing. Although my job is not what many people expect (and each day can be completely different than the next), I love my work and thrive on being creative and pleasing my clients every day.

Now that you know a little bit more of how I made it in the fashion industry, shop some of the items I’m eyeing right now.

Ryan Seacrest Denies Sexual Abuse Claims From Former Stylist

Ryan Seacrest has denied his former personal stylist’s new claims of sexual abuse, after she came forward publicly to detail his alleged misconduct, following an internal investigation by E! in which her complaint was dismissed.

“I don’t want to accuse anyone of not telling the truth but in this case, I have no choice but to again deny the claims against me, remind people that I was recused of any wrongdoing, and put the matter to rest,” Seacrest said in a statement to TheWrap on Tuesday.

The denial comes after Suzie Hardy, who started working as Seacrest’s personal stylist at E! News in 2006, told Variety on Monday that the TV host had sexually harassed her for years. Hardy’s claims include unwanted, sexually aggressive touching and groping by Seacrest. Hardy claimed she was fired after reporting the alleged sexual abuse to the company’s human resources department in 2013.

The sexual misconduct allegations were originally made public in November by Seacrest, who issued a statement denying the accusations.

“Recently, someone that worked as a wardrobe stylist for me nearly a decade ago at E! News, came forward with a complaint suggesting I behaved inappropriately toward her,” he said at the time. “If I made her feel anything but respected, I am truly sorry. I dispute these reckless allegations and I plan to cooperate with any corporate inquiries that may result.”

Seacrest, who hosts ABC’s Live With Kelly & Ryan, appeared on the show Tuesday but did not mention the new allegations.

E! issued a statement in January saying there was insufficient evidence to support the accusations against Seacrest. The network said Seacrest will continue to host the Oscars’ red carpet pre-show event at the 2018 Academy Awards, and a spokesperson for ABC said the network will still stand by the host.

Robin Wright’s House of Cards Style: A How-To Guide From Her Stylist

I am drawn to powerful women who prefer pearls to diamonds, dresses to pants and pencil skirts to mini skirts. Some of these women are real, such as Jackie Kennedy or my godmother Dominique. And some are fictional, such as Catherine Banning or Claire Underwood, who is my latest fashion obsession.

For the third season of this hit Netflix show, Robin Wright asked her personal stylist Kemal Harris to style Claire Underwood. Thus, Harris enters the picture and takes over Claire’s wardrobe from Tom Broecker, who was costume designer for Season 1, and Johanna Argan who styled all characters during Season 2 and continues to style the rest of the cast in Season 3.

An evolution of Claire’s style makes sense at this juncture in the story. In Season 3, Claire is in a very different headspace. During the first two seasons, she was working hard, always fighting to get to the top. Her wardrobe reflected that — mostly black, very structured pieces, Claire was always ready for battle.

In Season 3, she is at the top of the ladder — she is in the White House. Her style illustrates this slight break in her struggle: Everything is a bit softer, a bit more feminine. Instead of her usual black armor, Claire is wearing softer colors, softer fabrics and fuller skirts. Thanks to Kemal Harris, costume designer and red carpet stylist.

Now represented by The Wall Group, Harris is from Vancouver BC. She studied fashion design there, and from the start was interested in the styling aspect of fashion. Working with photographers, she eventually made her way to New York City and Robin Wright became her client. Harris styled her for the red carpet and other events. “The red carpet is very competitive, you can’t wear anything that has been worn before, the focus is on trying to get exclusive looks from designers that are right off the runway” she says. Dressing a fictional character is very different. “There is so much more to consider than if anyone ever worn this dress before… the story arc, the setting, the lighting, the time of day” Harris explains.

What if you wanted to move from fiction to reality? What are the fashion lessons we can learn from Claire Underwood in Season 3?

1. Claire’s clothes fit her perfectly. Indeed, it is all about fit. Harris had a mannequin built to Wright’s exact measurements so as to be able to tailor outfits to her exactly, without her having to be there for all the fittings. Harris explains: “We tailor almost every piece to her fit; not everyone can afford to do that of course, but having a great tailor makes all of the difference.” Buy one less pair of shoes and instead have your pants and dresses tailored.

2. Claire is not much of a pants girl. Pencil skirts. Full skirts. Fitted dresses. More feminine, and somehow more powerful.

3. Claire is even less of a prints girl. She prefers solid colors. Harris laughs: “We did one striped blouse in Season 3. That is as far as we went. Anything beyond that is too flamboyant for Claire’s character. She is so classic.”

4. Claire’s idea of color remains muted. Deep burgundy, hunter green, violet, light gray, oatmeal. Otherwise, her color palette is black, white and charcoal.

5. Claire is not into jewelry or accessories. If she has to choose, she chooses pearls over diamonds. A single strand of pearls as a necklace, sometimes a single strand bracelet. And of course, her Cartier watch. That has been her trademark from the start. Harris adds “the Cartier team is such a delight to work with, they let me look through their archives for inspiration.”

6. Claire does not own a pair of jeans, or sweatpants. Her version of casual are pants with cuffs (when she does wear pants), and a cashmere sweater. Or a pair of black silk pajamas.

7. Claire’s preferred sleeve length is three quarters. So much so that Harris often has to alter the sleeve length of the outfits to fit this rule. And oh how powerful does this look with long black leather gloves?

8. Claire only wears stilettos — Manolos and Louboutins, specifically. You will not see her in a wedge or flats. Unless she is running of course.

9. Claire loves a statement purse. YSL Sac du Jour is her go-to, although an Hermes Kelly bag does make its appearance. As does a Ralph Lauren beaded clutch.

10. Claire likes contemporary designers. In addition to classics such as Ralph Lauren, Armani, and Burberry, she wears up and comers such as Altuzarra, Jason Wu, Derek Lam.

I ask Harris to describe Claire’s style in three words: “Timeless. Decisive. Feminine.”

Timeless requires no explanation.

Decisive because every look is a complete statement. There’s no flip-flopping on the style direction, there is an underlying strength in the cut and fit. The message is that of a powerful woman. Nothing is superfluous, nothing is fussy. She makes bold choices like the Ralph Lauren gown for the State Dinner based on her poise and confidence.

And feminine: Not the first word that jumps to my mind when I think about Claire, yet so very accurate. Feminine, not in a “mini skirt” kind of way. More in a “my clothes fit so well you can’t help but see my figure” kind of way. No one would ever mistake Claire for a man…
