James Baldwin’s ‘Beale Street’ Is Talking Louder Than Ever

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

If Beale Street Could Talk, a movie directed by Barry Jenkins, opens in limited release December 14. The novel of the same name by James Baldwin and on which the movie is based was published in June 1974. It tells the story of Tish and Fonny, two very young (she’s 19, he’s 22) African-Americans in New York City who are in love, engaged to be married, then find the fragile trajectory of their lives thrown off by Fonny’s arrest for a rape he did not commit. The perpetrator of the arrest—of the entire maddening injustice of Fonny’s incarceration—is one Officer Bell, a blue-eyed, red-haired New York City cop who, for no good reason, has it in for Fonny.

Beale Street is a tragedy, not without hope at the end, but a tragedy nevertheless. “You can beat the rap, but you can’t beat the ride,” is a saying you hear among lawyers of the criminal defense bar, and the ordeal that Tish, Fonny, and their families endure is a very harsh ride indeed.

The same summer that Beale Street was published, I read it far from New York, in a quiet, leafy suburb of what was called in those days “the New South,” and the news that book brought me might as well have come from another planet. I was 16, white, middle class, and had spent exactly one night of my life in New York, at a Holiday Inn. The world Baldwin depicts, a world in which the racist animus of a white policeman could so randomly, lethally be brought to bear on one particular black man, rocked my 16-year-old self back on his heels.

Jada Pinkett Smith Gets Emotional Talking About Parents’ Abusive Relationship

Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk, wouldn’t be as successful as it is if she didn’t spill all the tea about her personal business.

And Monday’s episode was no exception, as the actress dished on dealing with domestic violence.

Jada talks to her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, about her abusive relationship with her father, the late Robsol Pinkett Jr., who died in 2010. Adrienne reveals that Pinkett Jr. physically abused her and was typically drunk during his violent spells.

“See, I was a violent drunk too, that’s why I had to stop drinking,” Jada replies.

“He gave me a black eye once, and I tried to hide it from Mommy, but she saw it,” Adrienne says.

Jada breaks down talking about her late father, who she describes as a “gentle soul.”

“It’s not easy to hear that your parents experienced that together,” she says, as Adrienne remarks that she wishes Robsol was still alive to share his side of the story.

“Now that I’m older, I have so much more compassion in knowing what he had gone through. You know, ’cause I was pretty harsh on him.”

Here’s why everyone’s talking about Jennifer Aniston’s controversial Friends revelation

And we can’t deal

Rex

After ten years of being there for us, Friends left our screens in 2004 – leaving a Central Perk shaped hole in our hearts – and we’re still not over it.

Yes it may have been 14 years since Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Monica, Phoebe and Joey made their last appearances but it still feels like it was just yesterday.

We’re still deeply invested in Rachel and Ross’ tumultuous relationship, we’ve never given up hope on Parker (Alec Baldwin) coming back into our lives, and are we the only ones confused by our feelings for Ben now that he’s grown up and starring in Riverdale?

Despite their relationship statuses being more uncertain than Brexit and the characters moving house and changing their jobs far too frequently, there was of course one constant on the show, Rachel Green’s perfect hair.

From the iconic bob to the long layered look, everyone wanted ‘the Rachel’, no matter what season we were on.

The only issue of course was that no one was actually able to maintain ‘the Rachel’ other than Jennifer Aniston herself.

Flashback to all of us having a meltdown when we realised that we had cut all of our hair off and still looked nothing like Jennifer Aniston.

Yes, surprise surprise only Jennifer Aniston can pull of ‘the Rachel’ – a look created by iconic hairstylist Chris McMillan, but according to the actress, even she couldn’t handle the look.

While winning the 2018 Hairstylist of the Year award, Jen was given the honour of introducing Chris to the stage, but not before she told the whole world of the woes of ‘the Rachel’ upkeep behind the scenes.

‘You feel beautiful, you feel sexy, you feel alive, and then you feel screwed because no one has the ability to actually do what Chris did to this haircut,’ she explained to the audience. ‘I used to call it “The Rachel” years when I got that haircut. That was like “wow, this is amazing” and then I was totally left with this, like, Greek, frizzy mop on my head, because I had no idea how to do what he did.’

She concluded: ‘No one seems to know how to do what Chris does. I figured out that’s called creating job security, so well done Chris on that.’

Well at least it’s not just us that couldn’t cope with the iconic look – if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to burn all of the photos of us in the 90s.

Fantastic Fest 2018: 3 to See on the Lighter Side, Featuring Nicolas Cage, Talking Animals and French Criminals

The annual Fantastic Fest is known for showcasing strange and often disturbing films. See, for example, our recent coverage of the deeply unsettling Suspiria.

Yet the festival's focus on wild, crazy and freaky movies also embraces titles on the lighter, more fantastical side of the genre spectrum. Here are three examples of somewhat "lighter" movies that recently screened at the festival in Austin, Texas.
