Innovator Wins Award for Creating Technology To Help People Raise Bail Money [VIDEO]

At the recent Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Summit in Charlotte, North Carolina, event sponsor Koch Industries and its Georgia Pacific subsidiary presented the inaugural Principled Entrepreneurship Award to a business innovator who is literally helping thousands gain their freedom. Ben McFarlin, founder, chief technology officer, and CEO of Atlanta–based Help Bond Me Inc. has been using technology to drive justice reform through a platform that allows pretrial detainees to connect with family members, friends, and followers via social media to raise bail money.

A core tenet of the Market-Based Management framework developed by Charles G. Koch, CEO of one of the nation’s largest privately held corporations, Principled Entrepreneurship focuses on companies that create products and services to help people improve their lives, and doing so through the application of “the judgment, responsibility, initiative, economic and critical thinking skills, and sense of urgency necessary to generate the greatest contribution, consistent with their organization’s risk philosophy.” As such, it emphasizes that value creation, innovation, self-determination, and integrity helps drive long-term success.

Bearing all of those qualities, McFarlin is the first subject in our special “Profiles of Principled Entrepreneurship” series.

McFarlin founded the company in 2016 after being moved by the tragic case of Sandra Bland, which drew national attention when she died three days after her incarceration at a Waller County, Texas, jail due, in large part, to her inability to obtain $ 5,000 needed for her release. McFarlin, who holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Southern University A&M College and attended graduate school at the Georgia Institute of Technology developed both the hardware and software for the Help Bond Me system. When he first unveiled the platform, BE designated it as one of our “10 Best Apps From Black Founders.”

raise bail money

To launch his business, he gained guidance from some of the most brilliant minds in the tech space by participating in accelerator programs like Tech Wildcatters in Dallas, NewMe in Miami, and TechSquare Labs in Atlanta. He maintains that the expertise and advice from tech powerhouses such as Angela Benton, Paul Judge, and Rodney Sampson in “those spaces really helped me to grow.”

Visit the helpbond.me website and you’ll witness that expansion, McFarlin and his dedicated team share the company’s current and upcoming services, including:

  • Construction of hardware kiosks and tablets for county jails. Such devices enable pretrial detainees to send hundreds of arrest notifications to friends, family, and followers through social media, text messaging, and e-mail—all which have higher response rates than phone calls.
  • Creation of “a blockchain-based fundraising platform for bail.” Friends and family can obtain bail in cryptocurrency and managed by a smart contract. “All transactions will be recorded to the Ethereum Blockchain to ensure immutability and transparency,” McFarlin told BE at the Entrepreneurs Summit. “We are building a financial system for deposit bail. Processing credit card payments for bail has traditionally been considered high risk. Our funds are guaranteed with zero chargebacks and instantly available to county clerks using the Help Bond Me Ethereum debit card.”
  • Developing “an angel network” tied to community bail funds in major cities nationwide that gain financial contributions from local philanthropists to post bail for destitute pretrial detainees.

Thus far, McFarlin has made inroads into the Cook County, Illinois, jail system as well as explored the jail system in Cobb County, Georgia.

This service is especially vital to African Americans. The 2018 Report To The United Nations on Racial Disparities in the U.S. Criminal Justice System from The Sentencing Project, a justice reform advocacy group, revealed that African Americans were incarcerated in local jails at a rate 3.5 times that of non-Hispanic whites in 2016. Moreover, roughly 70% of pretrial releases require money bond, “an especially high hurdle for low-income defendants, who are disproportionately people of color,” according to that report.

As an African American who knows all too well that a traffic stop can turn into a life-derailing event,  McFarlin says the development of Help Bond Me has been a deeply personal mission for him. “It has taken quite a bit of time, money, and effort to get to this point. We started out with just an idea that could help someone in their time of need. Since then, we have spoken with hundreds of people. That includes the person who was arrested, the jail commander that held him, the judge who set the bail, the family members that raised the bail and the bond agent that posted it,” McFarlin wrote on the Help Bond Me Facebook page. “We’ve traveled the country, gone to jail conferences, presented to sheriffs, spoken with non-profits about bail reform and collaborated with local bail funds. We’ve hit the streets with Help Bond Me, in the malls, flea markets, barber shops, beauty salons, trains, and bus stations. There’s no hype, gimmick or ‘hook’ to what we do. Quite frankly, it can sometimes be an ugly business. But, it’s important work that needs to be done.”

In our video interview, discover how McFarlin transformed his passion for justice reform into a disruptive venture, serving thousands of detainees and their families. He represents a true principled entrepreneur.

Get Well Wednesday: Can Technology Put Your Health At Risk?

FOR WOMEN WHO MAY KEEP THEIR CELL PHONES TUCKED IN THEIR BRA — IS THERE A RISK OF BREAST CANCER FROM RADIATION?
A: As far as we can say, there is no credible evidence linking cell phones tucked in the bra to breast cancer. While there are plenty of Facebook posts claiming a link, there just is no solid evidence. In fact, cell phones do not emit the type of radiation known to cause cancer.

FOR MEN WHO KEEP THEIR CELL PHONES IN THEIR POCKETS — IS THERE A RISK OF INFERTILITY/DECREASED SPERM COUNTS?
Again, there is no credible evidence to support this claim.

IS THERE ANY LINK BETWEEN PROLONGED CELL PHONE USE AND CANCEROUS BRAIN TUMORS (OR OTHER TYPES OF CANCER)?
A number of studies have tried to get at this question. Results are inconclusive. The International Agency for Cancer Research the UN cancer agency says “maybe.” It’s important to note though that there has been no increase in cancerous brain tumors in those countries where cell phones were first widely used. If cell phones did significantly increase the risk, it’s likely we would have seen an increase by now.

So while cellphones do not seem a significant or even likely cause of brain tumors, I actually believe we should tell people what we know, what we do not know and what we believe and label it accordingly. The answer is we do not know. Everyone is allowed to have a belief as long as they label it so. The problem is, people are stoking fears and creating unfounded worries. That’s not really fair considering the evidence.

WHY DOES THERE SEEM TO BE SO MUCH CONFLICTING INFORMATION REGARDING CELL PHONE RADIATION AND CANCER?
he only ethical way to answer these questions scientifically is through epidemiologic study. It is hard to do good epidemiologic studies. They take a long time and even then can be prone to certain biases. If something causes a lot of cancer as cigarettes do, it is much easier to establish a definitive link.

Our studies tell us that if cell phone do cause cancer, it is in small numbers. Smoking, obesity and lack of exercise, and even alcohol consumption are way ahead of cell phones, as they definitely cause cancer. Cell phones are a big maybe and in my opinion, probably not a cause of cancer at this point.

The answers to the above questions may differ for children who have developing brains and skulls. It is possible that kids should not use cell phones or should use them in very limited ways. They could be more at risk of brain tumors than adults because of thin skull shielding and developing brains. Again I have to use “possible” and “could,” as the science is inconclusive. It is hard to study this in adults and even harder in kids.

DO CELLPHONES CAUSE ANY OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS?
I am frequently asked about cell phones and brain tumors and the amazing thing is the science clearly shows us that if they cause brain tumors it is in small numbers. It is very clear that cell phone induced distraction, especially while driving, kills far more people than cell phones do through cancer.

HOW CAN I LOWER MY EXPOSURE TO RF WAVES FROM CELLPHONES?
If you are worried about cell phones causing cancer and I refuse to criticize anyone who does worry, use the phone with a wired headset (not a blue tooth). The other thing is do not store it next to your body when not on a call.

WHAT ARE SOME FACTORS THAT DEFINITELY DO AFFECT CANCER RISK?
Tobacco use causes more than a third of all cancer deaths. I even worry about medical radiation from screening and diagnostic tests, which causes 1 to 2 percent of cancers. This is a much more important source of radiation than cell phones, which again emit the wrong kind of radiation in way smaller amounts. The key here is to avoid unnecessary medical tests.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OFTEN-DISCUSSED MYTHS THAT ACTUALLY DO NOT INCREASE BREAST CANCER RISK?

I hear questions about bras and deodorant causing breast cancer. There is no evidence to prove either one of these do.

IS CANCER HEREDITARY?
About 1 in 10 people who get cancer get it because it travels in their family. We see hereditary breast, colon and prostate cancer, especially. There are hereditary leukemias, lymphoma, ovarian and endometrial cancers, but these are not at common. We are getting better at figuring out the gene mutations that increase cancer risk.

ARE RESEARCHERS CLOSER TO FINDING A CURE FOR CANCER?

That is the most complicated question you have asked. Cancer is more than 200 different diseases all with uncontrolled cell growth in common. Some cancers are already very curable. More than ¾ of all testicular cancers, most lymphoma and a significant number of leukemia is regularly cured.

There are what are called recalcitrant tumors that are more difficult to cure. For those we focus on early detection with treatment through surgery and radiation. A growing number of patients early diagnosed colon, breast, prostate and lung cancers do well.

Making things even more complicated we have learned a large number of certain cancers would do well no matter what we do. There is increasing movement to watch early prostate cancer as more than half of men diagnosed will never need treatment. We are getting better with tests that tell us the people with breast and prostate cancer that need treatment versus those that need observation.

Prevention of cancer is also important. The combination of prevention (especially tobacco control) and wise screening and treatment have prevented a lot of deaths. The cancer death rate has actually declined 26% since 1992.

New Car Updates, Robots Dominate Annual Technology Show

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The smartphones and other small machines that used to dominate the annual CES gadget show have been overshadowed in recent years by bigger mobile devices: namely, automobiles.

Auto companies typically save more practical announcements about new cars, trucks and SUVs for the upcoming Detroit auto show. But major automakers like Toyota, Kia, Hyundai and Ford have a noticeable presence at this week’s tech showcase in Las Vegas. CES is a chance for carmakers and suppliers of automotive parts and software to display their wilder and far-out ideas.

Among the highlights Monday:

— Toyota says it’s developing self-driving mini-buses that can serve as bite-sized stores. These vehicles will drive themselves to places where potential buyers can try on clothes or shoes or pick through flea market items. The project is still in the conceptual stage, with testing expected in the 2020s.

— Automotive supplier Bosch wants to help guide drivers to vacant parking spots in as many as 20 U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Miami and Boston. The company says it will be working with automakers on the initiative but didn’t say which ones. As cars drive by, they will automatically recognize and measure gaps between parked cars and transmit that data to a digital map.

In other developments at CES:

— TV manufacturers are showcasing new models — all with acronyms to set their sets apart. One feature called HDR10+ by Samsung and HDR 10 Pro by LG takes what’s known as high dynamic range and adjusts settings for each frame, instead of having levels set for the entire video at once. Meanwhile, quantum-dot technology promises more accurate colors. Samsung calls its version QLED, while Hisense has QDEF.

— As LG unveiled its lineup of smart appliances, executive David VanderWaal quickly lost rapport with his on-stage partner, the cute voice-activated assistant CLOi. After a greeting, CLOi stopped responding while continuing to blink its digital eyes. VanderWaal shrugged it off, saying, “even robots have bad days.”

— HTC is upgrading its headsets for exploring virtual worlds. HTC says the new Vive Pro has better resolution and audio and weighs less than its existing VR model. The Taiwanese company hasn’t yet revealed cost or shipping dates. There’s also a wireless option coming this summer. The Vive competes with Facebook’s Oculus among high-end systems, but these haven’t been as widely used as smartphone-based headsets such as Samsung’s Gear VR and Google’s Daydream.

And beyond CES:

— Toy maker VTech has agreed to pay $ 650,000 to settle charges it violated a law protecting children’s privacy. The Federal Trade Commission says VTech collected personal information from children without getting consent from a verified parent and didn’t do enough to protect the data it collected. Such toys have become popular, and companies are expected to unveil more toys and other internet-connected gadgets at the CES tech show in Las Vegas this week.

Apple Smart Glasses

Amid reports that Apple has been busy developing a pair of advanced smart glasses, Tim Cook went on record during a recent interview with The Independent and essentially put to bed any hopes that such a product might see the light of day anytime soon. Though Cook didn’t deny Apple’s interest in such a product, he flat-out said that the technology needed to make such a product feasible simply isn’t mature enough right now.

“But today I can tell you the technology itself doesn’t exist to do [smart glasses] in a quality way,” Cook said. “The display technology required, as well as putting enough stuff around your face – there’s huge challenges with that. The field of view, the quality of the display itself, it’s not there yet.”

Aereo Cleared To Auction TV Streaming Technology In Bankruptcy Deal

(Reuters) – A bankruptcy court has allowed defunct video streaming company Aereo Inc to auction its TV streaming technology assets, according to court papers published on Friday.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan ruled on Wednesday that Aereo could sell its assets, after the company reached an agreement with broadcasters over the sale process.

These broadcasters include CBS Corp, Comcast Corp’s NBC, Walt Disney Co’s ABC and Twenty-First Century Fox Inc’s Fox.

Under the agreement, Aereo will allow the broadcasters to attend the auction of the assets and provide them a weekly update on the status of the sale process.

Aereo filed for bankruptcy in November, five months after the U.S. Supreme Court said it violated broadcasters’ copyrights by capturing live and recorded programs on miniature antennas and transmitting them to subscribers for $ 8-$ 12 a month.

That decision effectively closed down New York-based Aereo, whose business model was to offer a less-expensive alternative to cable television.

The case is In re: Aereo Inc, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 14-13200.
