New ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ Teaser is Terrifying; Here’s Everything We Know So Far

New ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ Teaser is Terrifying; Here's Everything We Know So Far

If you’re a child of the ‘80s or ‘90s, you’re familiar with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The series of children’s books, written by Alvin Schwartz and initially illustrated by Stephen Gammell, were staples of every boy and girl’s book shelf and provided so many of them with so many nightmares. Now there’s a movie adaptation of some of the bone-chilling tales found in the pages of that iconic collection.

Following brief glimpses earlier this…

How To Keep Learning at Work: Tell Us Your Favorite Conferences, Networking Groups and Resources!

stock photo of a filled conference room watching a presentation

Here’s a kind of odd career question for you: what are your best tips for how to keep learning at work and in your career — and what are the best resources you’ve found that fulfill requirements, keep you educated, and maybe go above and beyond, such as providing networking opportunities? This is going to be very career/job specific, so in comments please note what you’ve found that’s really excellent…

For my $ .02, in my prior job as a media lawyer I had attended a lot (and compiled/presented a fair amount) of in-house CLEs that my firm put on for lawyers at the firm and clients of the firm; I was also pretty involved with a yearly Practicing Law Institute tome on prior restraints, so I often attended the conferences around the presentation of those books. There are exceptions to everything, but a lot of those CLEs and mass conferences that I attended were… not good. Lots of droning by presenters… lots of audience members checked out and not even giving 25% of their attention. Then I got the opportunity to go to some other continuing legal education things and was wowed by the difference… (For my $ .02, which is worth even less because I have a long history of working with/for the organization, but still: if you’re interested in media law, the absolute best general conference to attend (and get a ton of CLEs) is the biennial Virginia conference run by the Media Law Resource Center. Great content, really engaged presenters and audience, great opportunities for networking.)

In my current job as a professional blogger, I’m still struggling to find “the best” conference that affords opportunities to network as well as brings me up to date on the things that I need to know. I’ve written before about taking classes like Marie Forleo’s B-School and Elite Blog Academy and recommend those to other newbie bloggers/digital entrepreneurs; I’ve gone to RewardStyle conferences in the past as well, as well as a ton of Fashion 2.0 events back in the day. I’ve looked into but haven’t pulled the trigger on things like Ali Brown’s Iconic conference or things like that; I’d love to find a mastermind group but ultimately know what I need to do and just need to find the time to do it.

Over to you, readers — what are the best resources you’ve found to keep learning in your career? What conferences and networking groups offer the best of the best educational and networking opportunities for you in your chosen career?

Do you really think it’s ok to tell me how to get pregnant?

stay over

It’s funny (and by that I don’t mean the laugh-out-loud kind), isn’t it? That your own body is never really your own. When you’re getting married, you’re asked if you’re going to get into shape for the big day – no one ever asks the husband that one, mind – and virtually as soon as you walk down the aisle, you’re asked when you’re going to start a family.

And let me tell you, it gets even worse the moment you tell people you’re TTC – that’s trying to conceive by the way, your vocabulary opens to a whole new world of abbreviations when you’re TTC with your OH.

To be fair, it was my own fault for telling anyone, but in my defence, I believed it would get people off my back a little if I told them we were at least trying. Except, it only worked for a few months before the advice (mostly unsolicited) started pouring in again.

The thing that surprised me the most is how opinionated everyone is, and although it is never meant in a mean way, it’s f*****g grating is what it is. To give you a few examples…

‘Well you should probably put on a bit of weight’ – you would never tell someone to put on/lose weight in normal circumstances, would you? Also the only person who I trust to tell me about my weight here is my doctor, and she says it’s fine

‘No wonder it’s not happening, you’re hardly ever in the same country’ – myself and my husband do travel a lot for work, but trust me, we know how to make a baby, thanks captain obvious

‘You should stress less, because you know stress doesn’t help’ – you know what’s definitely not stressful? Someone asking for updates all the time. Or telling you not to stress.

‘So, is has anything happened? *wink wink*’ – Yeah we’re just keeping it secret for the lolz

‘Honestly, having a baby is so much more work than you think, I’m not trying to put you off, but…’ – you’re right, i’ve changed my mind, let’s cancel the baby making

‘Well your mum took a while to conceive, so you might have the same issues’ – again helpful

‘Oh, well I wouldn’t worry about it, some people takes aaaages to get pregnant, you’ve got lots of time’ – nope, not worried about it, thanks though

‘Well you’d better hurry, I don’t want to die before I’ve met my first great-grandchild’ – no pressure. At all.

The thing is, whether we are worried about it or not, it’s just not ok to comment on such personal matters, because you never know what people are going through. In the meantime, the next time someone offers up some words of wisdom, I’ll ask them exactly which sex position they think is best.

Portable Breathalyzer Amazon

Plenty of people know when they’ve had a few too many, and they do the responsible thing by letting someone else drive them home. In the age of Uber and Lyft, there’s no excuse whatsoever for getting behind the wheel of a car when you’re drunk. Of course some people have a few drinks and think that they’re sober enough to drive, and those borderline cases are the ones that get responsible people in trouble. Thankfully, there are now tools at our disposal that completely remove guesswork from the equation. The BACtrack C8 Personal Breathalyzer is small enough to fit in your pocket and it has the same type of accurate sensor used by law enforcement. This model also have a fantastic extra feature though: It gives you the approximate amount of time it’ll take before you’ll be sober again.

  • ZEROLINE TECHNOLOGY – With BACtrack’s innovative ZeroLine technology, you’re in control of your night. After your BAC results are delivered, ZeroLine estimates the time until your BAC is 0.00%, allowing you to quickly and easily know where you stand.
  • ULTRA-PORTABLE – One of the smallest police-grade alcohol tester ever created, the tiny BACtrack C8 weighs only 2 oz. It’s small size makes it easy to put it in your pocket or purse and have it with you any time you drink!

‘Making a Murderer: Part 2’ Creators Tell All: ‘What Happens When Injustice Is Exposed?’

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Upon its premiere in late 2015, Netflix’s Making a Murderer became an instant phenomenon (and sparked a true-crime documentary renaissance) by bringing to national attention the plight of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, residents Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, who in 2005—shortly after Avery was released from prison after serving 18 years for a rape he didn’t commit—were charged with the murder of Teresa Halbach.

Filmed over the course of 10 years, during which time Avery and Dassey were convicted and sentenced to life in prison, Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos’ series was an exhaustive examination of injustice, laying bare the devious motivations and tactics (including planting evidence and eliciting a false Dassey confession) used by state and law enforcement officials to put the men behind bars. Depressing and enraging in equal measure, it was an expert non-fiction exposé, as compulsively addictive as anything released during our modern binge-watching era.

Fans of Making a Murderer are thus thrilled by its return for an all-new 10-episode run—except, of course, that like its predecessor, the series continues to paint a portrait of the legal system that’s destined to infuriate. Charting Avery and Dassey’s attempts to exonerate themselves with the aid of new lawyers (famed attorney Kathleen Zellner for Avery; Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth co-founders Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin for Dassey), Ricciardi and Demos’ follow-up affords a detailed look at the myriad obstacles of the post-conviction process, the amazing possibilities afforded by forensic science, and the dogged obstinacy of the state of Wisconsin, which continues to uphold Avery and Dassey’s convictions even in the face of contradictory evidence. Multifaceted, eye-opening and heartbreaking, it’s yet another must-see effort from the directors.

NYPD Detective Told Weinstein’s Alleged Victim to Delete Messages: ‘We Just Won’t Tell’ D.A.

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

The former lead detective in the Harvey Weinstein sexual-assault investigation told a woman who accused the movie mogul of rape to delete messages and data from multiple cell phones before giving them to prosecutors, according the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

The alleged victim did not delete the messages and alerted her attorney because she felt uncomfortable with the request, according to a letter the D.A.’s office was required to send Weinstein’s attorney and file in court. The letter was released publicly on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman, identified only as “Complainant 2,” is the subject behind three of the mogul’s five counts of sex-related offenses: predatory sexual assault, rape in the first degree, and rape in the third degree. Her accusations stem from an incident that allegedly took place in Weinstein’s hotel room in Manhattan on March 18, 2013.
